[During the past several years a great deal of discussion has centered around the question of the permissible limit of sulphur content in fuels for automotive and aviation motors. Under certain conditions of operation, sulphur in motor fuels causes the formation of corrosive substances which attach bearings, wrist pins, and other parts of engines. On the other hand, in making gas¬oline from certain stocks, the gasoline fraction normally contains a relatively large proportion of sulphur compounds. By the generally used processes of reducing the sulphur content, a significant part of the gasoline fraction is lost as motor fuel, and added expenses are entailed for chemicals, labor, and other process costs. This condition has been an economic burden to some refiners of high-sulphur crudes. In some instances the treating losses have been rather severe and the treating costs relatively high, but the data presented in this paper indicate that the reduction of sulphur content of motor fuel is a problem to a relatively small number of refiners and of little or no concern to the remainder; in fact, more then 90 per cent of the 153 samples analyzed passed the Federal specification requirement, which limits the sulphur content to 0.10 -nor cent. 3 This report is based upon the results of an examination for sulphur content, Doctor test, copper strip corrosion, and color of the samples collected during January, 1930, for the twenty-first semiannual gasoline survey of the Bureau of Mines. Traditionally, strong and stiff devices, such as fully encapsulated rebar bolts and concrete lining and arches, are preferred for underground rock support. The attention is paid to the strength of the devices in such support designs. It has been observed in engineering practice that support systems composed of stiff devices are often subjected to premature failure in high stress rock conditions. In the past decade, yield support devices have been employed to improve the performance of rock support systems. A rock support system usually consists of both internal and external devices that are installed within the rock mass and on the free surface of the rock, respectively. Great efforts have been made to make support devices yieldable in the past years, but the efforts are focused on different aspects in the tunneling and mining branches. In the tunneling branch, the focus has been put on the development of external yield devices, such as Lining Stress Controller (LSC), Honeycomb element and compressible concrete, which are embedded in shotcrete liners, while in the mining industry the efforts has been on the development of yield rockbolts, such as the cone bolt and the D-Bolt. The internal and external support devices are not compatible in their deformation capacities in the current rock support systems even though yield devices have been employed. All the devices in a support system should be deformable and compatible in deformation capacity. With such a support system, premature failure of individual support devices could be avoided and the service life of the support system is prolonged. It is a trend at present to take into account the energy absorption capacity, instead of simply the strength, of support devices in rock support design.

Thermal plasma technology has a wide range of applications in extractive and process metallurgy. Beneficiation of complex ores, oxide reduction, melting/remelting of refractory metals and scrap, and the recovery of precious metals from waste products are some examples of potential uses for plasma technology. The highly concentrated enthalpy provided by plasma torches is a cleaner energy source and may give higher processing rates per reactor volume than conventional technologies. Some of the other advantages may be: controlled furnace atmosphere, ability to treat fine feed materials and rapid quenching. A review of some of the uses for plasma processing in non-ferrous process and extractive metallurgy is presented.

Liquid slags produced in smelting of copper concentrates contain copper in a dissolved form as well as mechanically entrained inclusions of copper matte. Coalescence and sedimentation of inclusions during slag cleaning plays a key role in copper recovery. Liquid matte inclusion in a molten slag presents a system of metallic conductor in an ionic solution. Constant electric field induces migration of the matte droplet along the current lines. Additional phenomena occur in a system under crossed electric and magnetic fields. Electromagnetic buoyancy force acting on the inclusion affects its settling rate. Electromagnetic buoyancy force of insulating and metal spheres has been measured in a liquid synthetic slag. It was found that depolarisation of the metal sphere, related to the electrode reactions occurring in the surface, plays an important role in the determination of the direction and magnitude of the electromagnetic force. On the basis of the existing theories and results of measurements a mathematical model describing the behaviour of metallic inclusions in the liquid slag under the influence of crossed electric and magnetic fields was developed. Simulation of behaviour of copper matte inclusions under crossed fields showed trajectory of motion in a liquid slag as a function of the slag properties and the inclusion size.

"The automated fire assay system (Fast In-line Fire Assay or FIFA) has not found acceptance in the Au mining industry as the lower measurable limit of 0.20 ppm did not allow Au tailings to be measured with confidence. The development of arrested cupellation has overcome this hurdle which was a limiting factor in the FIFA 1 process. In the new automated fire assay process, automated sample preparation, fluxing, fusion and separation of a Pb button are essentially similar to the FIFA 1 process, albeit with some improvements. However, the game-changer is the development and incorporation of arrested cupellation into the automated system, now called FIFA 2. The purpose of arrested cupellation is to reduce the 50 g Pb button to a 5 g Pb button by partial cupellation in a specially developed arrested cupellation system thereby concentrating the Au in the Pb by a factor of 10 and in so doing moving them into higher concentration ranges in the mini-button where they can be read on the spark spectrometer. Results show that concentrations down to 0.02 ppm Au in geological materials can now be determined using arrested cupellation in the FIFA 2 process, an order of magnitude improvement over FIFA 1.INTRODUCTION Traditional fire assay for Au has remained virtually unchanged for 3000 years. It has survived for so long because it is accurate, has relatively low detection limits and is relatively inexpensive. However, it is labour intensive, has a long turn-around time (typically at least 7 hours), is environmentally unfriendly and exposes assay operators to potentially unsafe conditions (toxic fumes, toxic dust and extreme heat from furnaces). The NiS collection method is not as effective for the assay of Au as it is for the PGEs. A rapid, accurate, cost-effective method for the determination of Au and the Platinum Group Elements (PGEs) in geological materials would be a tremendous benefit to mining companies. Many of these objectives have been met by the FIFA 1 (Fast In-line Fire Assay) developed some 15 years ago in which automated methods have replaced the manual procedures which are part and parcel of conventional fire assay. However, concentrations below 0.2 ppm have been very difficult to achieve with sufficient reliability."

This paper addresses the valuation and development timing of an undeveloped mineral project. Traditional analysis has us developing the project immediately if its net present value (NPV) is positive. Option pricing theory finds that it is better to wait until the NPV of the property is significantly greater than zero before developing. Alternatively, when evaluating the development timing decision, we must calculate NPV using a higher "timing-adjusted" discount rate, and develop the property only if its NPV using this timing-adjusted discount rate is greater than zero. This paper uses option pricing ideas to convert this development timing advice into a more concrete and user-friendly decision rule: develop the project when its "development-timing NPV" is positive, this development-timing NPV being calculated using the normal discount rate.

One of the key objectives in production from any mine is the minimisation of ore loss and dilution. This can only be achieved when the distribution of ore within the mine is known. The distribution of ore is usually evaluated from a combination of drill hole information and underground mapping data. Three-dimensional models of the ore distribution are then constructed by interpolating grades, contact locations and confirming these estimates through mapping. While the interpolation procedure can incorporate an understanding of the local geological conditions, it is an approximation and thus susceptible to some degree of ore loss or dilution. Naturally, such problems increase in areas of sparse geologic information or greater geologic complexity. Borehole radar offers an approach to decrease the interpolative aspects of modelling by providing a continuous image of some ore contacts. Borehole radar works by building a two-dimensional image of an ore contact from radio waves bounced off the contact from closely spaced positions along a borehole. This image can be imported into Datamine (or a similar design package) and incorporated into geological models of a given ore block. The results of a trial survey from the Mariners nickel mine at Kambalda are presented to illustrate the improved level of detail and accuracy that can be achieved through the incorporation of borehole radar into orebody delineation practice. Once implemented on a large-scale this technique has the potential to greatly increase the cost-effectiveness of long hole stoping at Kambalda, through increased ore recovery and reduced dilution.

As part of an ongoing program to develop high-quality materials with improved performance and service lives, and to conserve critical minerals, Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, researchers studied the process of hot-rolling metals, alloys, and composites in vacuum. First, a comprehensive review of the literature is presented, including the advantages and disadvantages of using vacuum. Next, details of hot-rolling titanium, chromium, and molybdenum-iron bimetal are given. Finally, the design of new equipment is described. At this time, it is uncertain whether hot-rolling metals in vacuum will gain commercial acceptance in the future.

Standard methods of determining clay mineral powder aspect ratios involve manual scanning electron microscopy analyses of shadowed particles in order to measure both platelet thickness and diameter. We present a method whereby the diameters of platelets are quickly determined by automated scanning electron microscopy and their images are recorded and digitally transferred to a transmission electron microscope equipped for parallel electron energy loss spectroscopy. Thickness' of platelets whose diameters are known from the previous analyses are determined by measurement of the ratio of scattered and unscattered electrons in the beam after it has been transmitted through the platelet.

Nearly all of the sulphur produced in the world today is converted to sulphuric acid and 49 % is used in the manufacture of fertilizers. In the last few years we have seen the beginning of another chapter in the volatile history of sulphur as the severe shortage of 1963:-67 has been transformed into present-day surplus. Prospects for further aggravation of this situation in the years ahead seem assured. In 1970, western world production showed a rate of increase of 4 -5%, which 1S somewhat less than that of 8% for the period 1963-1967. The rate of growth of consumption dropped considerably in 1968 when the demands of the fertilizer industry fell. During the same period of time, wide-spread demands have been set in motion for a clean environment which indicates that a fundamental change in sulphur supply, demand, and even sources, is likely to result from this upheaval. The sale of sulphur by Poland to the western world has increased and for 1970 was estimated at over one million metric tons. In the next few years, increase in Canadian sulphur supply will stern from two sources;

Graphite with layers structure is easily to form graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) by means of intercalation reactions due to the weak cohesion force among carbon layers, van der Waal?s interactions. By controlling the oxidation-intercalation, high quality exfoliated graphite with low residual sulfur content and MClx-GICs (M=Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) powder for electromagnetic wave absorbing and shielding materials have been invented. The expansion volume of expandable graphite can be larger than 160 mL/g while the residual sulfur content is less than 800 ppm. The MClx-GICs powder can shield infrared ray and laser completely up to 15 min. We have also in-vented exfoliated graphite for heavy oil adsorption and mild-expansion exfoliated graphite for anode materials in lithium ion battery by controlling the intercalation/de-intercalation. The exfoliated graphite can adsorb heavy oil up to 80 g/g, it also exhibits better performance than commercial active carbon in sewage treatment. The mild-expansion exfoliated graphite as anode material shows high capacity of 370 mAh/g and good cycle performance.

The Bannockburn gold area covers the four townships of Bannockburn, Argyle, Hincks, and Montrose, lying in the western part of the Matachewan district of Ontario (see Figure 1). The geology of these four town-ships was studied by H. C. Cooke of the Geological Survey, in 1917-18, and is shown in his map of the district. In the fall of 1930, a rich gold-bearing quartz vein was discovered in the northwest part of Bannockburn by B. S. Ashley. A prospecting rush followed the discovery; many claims were staked in the Bannockburn area, and, during the summer of 1931, a considerable amount of prospecting was done.

"Zinc-Tin alloys were solidified in horizontal form and the obtained results were analyzed. During solidification the distribution of temperatures were measured by using thermocouples located strategically along the length of the samples. From the measured temperatures the following parameters were derived; the local temperature gradient, the cooling rate and the velocities of the liquid and solids fronts. Comparing the structure of the samples and the values of these parameters it was found that the temperature gradient reaches minimum values of as low as - 0.6 °C/cm, and velocities of the fronts of around 0.1 cm/s. In addition, the grain size was measured along the samples. The results are presented and discussed in the frame of the results previously obtained for other alloys.IntroductionGenerally solidification leads to two types of grain morphologies: columnar and equiaxed. The origin of each one has been the subject of numerous theoretical and experimental researches in the field of metallurgy for many years [1-7]. The columnar-to-equiaxed transition, CET, is considered as an object of high technological relevance with respect to the directional solidification of metallic alloys. This structure transition may be sharp or gradual and it has been reported to be dependent on thermal conditions associated with the casting process, including melt convection, heat transfer coefficients at the metal-mold interface, growth rates, thermal gradients, cooling rates, transport of solute, alloy composition, melt superheat, mold temperature, mold design, casting size, casting geometry, and the concentration of nucleating particles. As a consequence, it is critical for industrial applications to understand the physical mechanisms which control this transition during solidification. Many studies highlight the importance of the relative growth of the equiaxed and columnar grains and develop expressions or numerical procedures to describe a criterion for the CET. A number of experimental investigations reported in the literature suggest that the CET occurs when GL in the melt reaches a minimum critical value [5-7]."

The production of phosphate concentrates (phosphate rock) from slimes represents a challenge to the phosphate industry worldwide. In Brazil, this challenge is particularly relevant due to the consistently low P2O5 grades and the igneous origin. The first industrial experiences of producing phosphate rock from slimes (-44µm or -325#) fraction started at Arafertil, currently Bunge Fertilizantes SA, in Araxá, in the 1980.s. This production corresponds, nowadays, to 35% of the total production of concentrates in the company (830,000t/year) in a circuit consisting of desliming in 40mm microcyclones and concentration in flotation columns, corn starch and fatty acids being utilised as reagents. The performance of slimes flotation and the process control, at Bunge´s concentrator, were improved after the introduction of column flotation technology, in the first half of the nineties. The column flotation technology for slimes recovery was expanded to other Brazilian concentrators still in the nineties: Ultrafértil (Catalão - GO), Bunge (Cajati - SP), Fosfértil (Tapira - MG) and Copebrás (Catalão - GO). At present the Brazilian production of phosphate rock is approximately 4.5Mt/year, with a strong trend for a market increase. Genuinely Brazilian technology is utilised for the processing of slimes, the concentrates representing 11 to 13% of the overall production. The production of apatite concentrates from slimes was relevant to increase phosphate recovery and reduce costs, contributing to the growth of the fertilisers industry.

"Diaphragm walls are known as underground structural elements commonly used as retention systems for excavation pits and shafts and permanent foundation walls or elements. It can be anticipated that, with the increasing trend of utilizing more and more underground space to accommodate environmental considerations and urban/suburban development, there will be an increasing requirement for diaphragm walling in even more complex conditions. Complex and/or challenging conditions in terms of ground conditions have a major impact in regards of choosing the right tools for excavation purpose. Complex conditions in terms of space limitations, especially for inner city job sites, require specifically adapted solutions for slurry, spoil, reinforcement and concrete handling and the related logistic to ensure smooth production. Furthermore, one focus will be given to the QA/QC topics of the production process. Real time installation control, data transfer and reporting systems become more and more important ensuring the five dimensions of a jobsite. Therefore, the paper will describe the construction method and the sequence of activities required for the construction of diaphragm wall systems with the focus on the cutter technology. It will describe also the main equipment which will be needed to execute these works under the various conditions INTRODUCTION Diaphragm walls are known as underground structural elements commonly used as retention systems for excavation pits and shafts and permanent foundation walls or elements. It can be anticipated that, with the increasing trend of utilizing more and more underground space to accommodate environmental considerations and urban/suburban development, there will be an increasing requirement for diaphragm wall usage in even more difficult conditions. Of course diaphragm wall can also be used as deep groundwater barriers (Cut-Off-Walls). This market has shown that the demand for these types of walls is reaching more and more difficult soil conditions or required depths which are surpassing the current standard. The trench cutter is the most important tool for performing this work. The trench cutter itself is a reverse circulation excavation tool. It consists of a heavy steel frame with two drive gears attached to its bottom end, which rotates in opposite direction around horizontal axis. Cutter wheels are mounted onto the drive gears. As they rotate, the soil beneath the cutter is continuously being broken up, removed, mixed with the bentonite slurry in the trench and moved towards the opening of the pump suction box. The slurry loaded with soil and rock particles is pumped by a centrifugal pump which is located right above the cutter wheels, up through a hose system up to a desanding plant where the slurry is cleaned and returned into the trench."

The Tóth adsorption isotherm-model was derived and has been widely used for the inhomogeneous solid surfaces. The three-parameter isotherm incorporates the effect of the interaction between the adsorbed substances as well. All classic isotherms can be clearly derived from this one. Bio sorption is the sequestering of dissolved components, i.e. metals from aqueous environment by living or dead biomass. The mechanism of the bio sorption is rather complex and predominantly refers to the affinity of the chemical functional groups: acetoamido groups of chitin, structural polysaccharides, amino and phosphate groups in nucleic acids, amino, amido sulfhydryl and carboxyl groups in proteins, hydroxyls in polysaccharides, sulphates, etc. towards the soluted substances, i.e. heavy metal ions. The physisorption, as well as the micro precipitation also play a role in the bio sorption mechanism. The description of such a complex process can be done by a model reflecting this complexity. According to our experimental results obtained using algae and immobilised algae for the sorption of heavy metal cations, the most appropriate model for such a description is the Tóth-isotherm, the parameters of which can be interpreted. Flotation process is also a very complex one, the overall result of which depends on the partial results of many micro processes and parameters. The particle interaction which very often takes place in the flotation systems makes the phenomenon even more complex. The flotation kinetic model with particle interaction was already introduced by author in 1994 and further developed in 2000. In this paper based on the experimental results obtained with metallic particles in case of recycling flotation the applicability of the Tóth-equation as an alternative flotation kinetic model for the systems with particle interaction is proved. The applicability of Tóth-model in mineral processing demonstrates again its universal character and the great talent of the late József Tóth, great Hungarian chemist. In this sense, the paper point out the identification, management, and proper disposal of pcb-containing electrical equipment used in mines. Also it point out alternatives to PCB dielectrics, storage, and disposal. The use of PCBs in mines has been documented during U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 8 mine inspections and it used as dielectrics in transformers, capacitors, and fluorescent light ballasts are common throughout industry worldwide.

Dwindling economic deposits of rutile (TiO2) prompted research on recovering it from secondary sources. One such resource is in Southwestern Turkey feldspar mining rejects that contain 5%-6% TiO2 mostly rutile. Previous studies could only upgrade the TiO2 to 36% TiO2 grade, claiming that the leftover flotation reagents on the surfaces of rutile and host minerals detrimentally affected upgrading of the rutile. As a potential remedy to this concern, a laboratory sample (from an operating feldspar mine in Milas, Turkey) was first caustic scrubbed, then air calcined at 400°C to evaporate the oily reagents. Subsequent physical separation of rutile included wet screening, gravity, magnetic, and electrostatic separation technologies. Such processes indeed improved the grade of the rutile concentrate up to 83 % TiO2 Low recovery of the TiO2 (<20%), was attributed to lack of full liberation of rutile, even at 125x44 micron range; interference with impurity minerals such as sphene and zircon; and simply the process inefficiency in upgrading the fine grains through conventional separation technologies for heavy minerals.
