It is known that the grinding condition has a major effect on the beneficiation characteristics of the minerals in subsequent processing, in particular, flotation. In the flotation process, particles surface and their condition can significantly influence collector adsorption and flotation performance. For example, particle shape and its surface roughness occurred during grinding may influence flotation characteristics of a specific ore. In fact, adsorption of different cationic and anionic species on mineral surfaces can be varied depending on the selected comminution procedure. The flotation performance of sulphide minerals can be detrimentally affected by the surface oxidation. The amount of surface oxidation may reduce the hydrophobicity of the mineral and makes adsorption of collectors less selective. Improved liberation may generally result in improved flotation recovery. However, this may result in finer grinding and slimes, and consequently, reduce the overall flotation recovery. This paper discusses the effect of wet and dry grinding on copper flotation of a complex Cu-Pb-Zn ore. Industrially, wet grinding is preferred due to its higher energy efficiency and owing to downstream processing requirements. In this study, series of flotation tests were conducted,and surface analysis (XPS and ToFSIMS) were performed after wet or dry grinding at two different P80 values. Mineralogical study was also conducted to investigate the liberation of valuable minerals after grinding. A higher copper flotation recovery was found for wet grinding. However, the copper recovery was increased by further grinding in both conditions (wet and dry). The results showed a higher collector adsorption on copper mineral surfaces after wet grinding. The surface analysis also revealed that the ore is slightly more oxidized after dry grinding probably due to higher temperature during dry grinding.

Over the past few decades the carbon intensity of ironmaking and steelmaking has been reduced considerably through improved efficiency in blast furnace ironmaking, partial replacement of coke with less carbon-intensive fuels, and increased use of scrap and direct-reduced iron in steelmaking. To evaluate possible further reductions in carbon intensity accurate process information is needed. A preliminary test of the fidelity of publicly reported data as a source of process information is reported here. The sources are industry roundups of electric furnace furnace steelmaking and blast furnace ironmaking (published by the Association for Iron and Steelmaking Technology), and data recorded by the Environmental Protection Agency under the US Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program. From a comparison for an integrated steelmaking plant and an electric furnace furnace plant, it appears that the values from the two data sources are consistent. The comparison does rely on process details such as the quantitative relationship between injected oxygen and carbon emissions in electric furnace steelmaking.

Iron segregation is pre-dated by copper and nickel segregation processes for which the experimental methodology and reaction chemistry were established. The accepted reaction sequence for segregation involves the generation of hydrogen chloride, the chloridization and volatilization of the metal chloride, and precipitation of the metal from the metal chloride in the vicinity of carbon. Iron segregation roasting offers a potential extraction solution for processing oxide deposits with complex mineralogy or waste streams such as Minette-type iron deposits, nickel laterites, ilmenite, red mud, electric arc furnace (EAF) dust, mill scale and slag. After subsequent magnetic separation, one is left with a high grade metallic iron powder which can be marketed for powder metallurgy or briquetted to serve as a direct reduced iron (DRI) product. The non-magnetic product is typically concentrated oxides including rutile, alumina, or oxides of V, P, and rare earths, etc. that may be economically recoverable with subsequent processing. While operating conditions vary for different metals, they share the requirements of an elevated operating temperature and a mixture of oxide ore, carbonaceous additive and a chloride additive in varying amounts all in a closed reactor to allow for reducing conditions and contain the volatile chlorides. This process is then followed by some form of physical separation. Testwork performed by the authors shows promising results that may aid in future development of the process. Segregation roasting of iron will likely never displace traditional beneficiation and ironmaking technologies; however, it has great potential in niche markets where traditional technologies have failed or current technologies generate substantial waste.

Installation of flotation equipment is a lengthy and intricate process involving conceptual design, detailed design and layout, equipment installation, equipment commissioning and handover prior to the plant commencing operation. During these steps, mistakes are often made that lead to increased costs and/or schedule delays in bringing the new equipment online.This paper presents a series of recommendations for the installation and commissioning of flotation equipment to minimise mistakes and ensure that plant production commences efficiently with a minimum of resources. The advice herein is based on lessons learnt from recent flotation equipment commissioning. The process of innovation is triggered by employees throughout the organisation in a collaborative manner.Problem solving becomes a core competence of the consultancy. A multidisciplined approach arrives at superior solutions that are rigorous, holistic, achievable and often novel. Lab-scale flotation of copper and cobalt oxidized ore from the Luiswishi deposit in the Katanga province (DRC) has been done focusing on the influence of the degree of process water recycling on metals recovery. Results have shown that at 20 % recycling rate, the recovery of copper and cobalt in the cleaner stage have been respectively reduced to 23 % and 45 % in comparison to 53 % Cu and 63 % Co if process water has not been recycled. At 10 % recycling rate however, the system could still tolerate the effect from recycling, since Cu and Co recovery has remained respectively at acceptable levels of 52 % and 60 %. In order to explain the reasons for the observed worsening of flotation results if process water was recycled at rate higher than 20 %, electrochemical investigation of the pulp has been performed. It has been established that the chemical compounds formed in the pulp when process water was recycled, do influence the sulphidization of malachite and heterogenite and impact further collector adsorption. To confirm these assumptions, the effect from thiosulphate ions presence during the sulphidization of high purity malachite has been studied. It has been found, that thiosulphate ions depending on their concentration in water induce variations in pulp properties such as DO content, pH, Es and contribute to formation of undesirable chemical compounds on mineral surface as identified by DRIFT spectroscopy.

An EAF dust generated in a Swedish steel mill has been leached in hydrochloric acid at The solution obtained has been subjected to purification by cementation followed by precipitation of zinc with sodium carbonate. The thermal decomposition of the precipitate was studied using thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. The results show that during the calcination of the precipitate three different reactions occur. The decomposition of the solid phases Zn5(CO3) (OH)6, CaZn(CO3)2 and CaCO3 occur completely at 370°C, 560°C and 940°C respectively, yielding a final product containing 61.9% ZnO and 38.1% CaO. Methods to minimize calcium and manganese in the final product are discussed.

In recent years, research in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) has had many important successes. Among the most significant of these has been the development of powerful new computer software known as the "expert systems". Expert system programs designed to provide expert-level consultative advice in mineral exploration (Duda et al, 1981), scientific (Feigenbaum, Buchanan and Lederburg, 1971) and medical (Shortliffe, 1976) problem solving are generally acknowledged to be among the forerunners of this research. As the decision makers virtually in all fields face a more complex and involved world within which to operate, the need for some decision support is also becoming urgent. Thus applications of expert systems continue to spread out reaching problems that, because of their dimensions or particular aspects, set more demand on the decision methodologies. To meet these new requirements, many activities which were performed in the past by the domain expert or engineer must become automated. Furthermore, previous research (Dawes and Corrigan, 1974; Dawes, 1979) has shown that automating an expert's decision rules often provide better decision than the expert does. For large systems it would be very useful (or even necessary) to have formal tools, allowing one for example, to automatically discover inconsistencies, contradictions or redundancies, or to identify the possibilities of wrong lines of reasoning in the decision process.

This paper is concerned with the coalescence behaviour of two bubbles in dilute solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, methyl isobutyl carbonil and triton x-100. Two bubbles were produced at the tips of adjacent capillaries and the time elapsed between the first contact of the bubbles and film rupture was determined by means of a high speed camera. It was found that the amount of surfactant required to stabilise the bubbles increased in order of CTAB>TX-100>MIBC. The probability of coalescence decreased sharply with increasing surfactant concentration in CTAB and TX-100 solutions while with MIBC each bubble pairs resulted in coalescence, giving hundred per-cent coalescence probability.

Any city dweller who has walked alone along a remote mine passageway has to be impressed by the eerie silence - the total absence of noise except for ones own breathing and scuffing of boots on the bottom. An underground mine can have tremendous contrasts, from complete silence to the ear piercing clatter of percussion drills working on the mine roof. Noise in underground mining machines is both useful and detrimental. Without characteristic noises that are recognizable to miners, operators would have a more difficult job operating their machines. Noise serves as a warning of approaching machinery, and changes in noise give indication that breakdowns may occur. But excessive noise is a health hazard. In recognition of this fact, our Congress included noise exposure as a part of the "Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969". As Fig. 1 indicates, allowable noise exposure is established by specifying a time duration permitted at different noise levels. This is the well known "Walsh-Healey" criteria which governs noise exposure in many industries.

"Tue sulphatization of zinc concentrate produced from heated zinc concentrate of Um Ghieg area, eastern desert by ammonium sulphate as sulphatizing agent is carried out at different conditions to achieve the appreciable formation of soluble sulphates. The maximum zinc recovery as soluble sulphate equfils to 95% upon using 1.5 stoichiometry ammonium sulphate at 600 °C for one hour. Tue obtained leached zinc sulphate solution is subjected· to purification process to prepare high pure zinc metal and zmc compounds such as pure zinc sulphate, zinc caibonate and zinc oxide. Tawil and others (10-16) using ammonium sulphate as sulphatizing agent for the successful treatment of nonferrous bearing materials.Therefore, the present work aims to study the different factors affecting the sulphatizing roasting process of local zinc coocentrate by anunonium sulphate to extract completely zinc and preparing its main compounds. "In recent years, use of mineral processing tailings as a paste backfill has been significantly increased due to the environmental problems occurred during the disposal of the tailings in mine area. The paste material used to fill the stopes excavated is generally consisted of tailings (solid ratio: 70–85%) and cement (3-7%w/w). Meanwhile, the strength of the paste material is completely related to ratios of these materials. Cemented Paste Backfill (CPB) system is used as support depending on the roof pressure and also as an underground disposal method. Therefore, temporary strength value of the paste material gains a great importance. For example, the paste backfill material must compensate the minimum 4 MPa strength value in order to procure the permanent fortification, and the mixture cost must be minimal as well. For this reason, in this study, the Pb-Zn tailings were used to prepare for the paste backfill material using cement in order to perform the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests. Additionally, a statistical experimental design and linear programming techniques was used to find the optimum mixture in terms of strength and cost. The pulp solid ratios (PSR) of the tailings and cement (by the solid) were varied as 75-85% and 3-8%, respectively. The results of this study; the optimum mixture is ~79.5%PSR and 6.8% cement ratio (by the solid) for 4 MPa UCS (28 day) and 16-17 cm slump value determined by this method with statistically reviewed experimental data. INTRODUCTION Fine-grained tailing waste materials resulting from mining activities are an important environmental problem. In terms of environmental protection, the use of tailings with paste backfill is a very attractive approach and a desirable solution to tailings management. Paste backfill, which is used to fill underground openings, is made by primarly mine tailings mixed with hydraulic binders and water. Its main benefits are not only disposal of mine tailings in underground, but also providing a certain strength to ensure a safe working environment. Therefore, it is necessary to use hydraulic binders due to durability of the system (Benzaazoua et al., 2004). Paste backfill, formed from the mix of dewatered plant tailings (75-85 wt. % solids), water and binder (3-8 wt. %) (Brackebusch, 1994; Landriault et al., 2005).Water is used to determine the chemical reactions between tailing and binder materials for strength as well as increasing pumpability. Portland cement and ash can be used as binder materials (Douglas and Malhotra, 1987). The factors which affect strength and stability of paste backfill separate into two groups called interior and exterior factors. Interior and exterior factors determine the strength, stability and deformation features of backfill in short and long terms and also affect the transportation of backfill to underground (Benzaazoua et al., 2004; Erçikdi et al., 2006; Yilmaz et al., 2010; Nasir and Fall, 2010). Material properties of tailings as well as site operations to fill the underground openings are the most important steps for the design purposes. Grain size distribution, chemical, and physical properties of tailings, and mechanical properties of paste fill material are used to understand the suitability of tailings as paste fill material (Ozturk et al., 2014). In addition, Fig. 1. is also proposed to apply a typical design for the operational stages of paste fill applications on the site."

Operators in North America must be efficient quality suppliers to thrive in a talc market in which many overseas suppliers have advantages such as lower hourly wages, shorter distances to ports, and less government regulation and intervention. Continuous improvement through teamwork and innovation is needed in the following areas to thrive amidst worldwide competition: 1) Maximization of the in-place value of ore. 2) Research and development to yield new processes and products. 3) Safe productivity. 4) Involvement in legislative processes. 5) Wellness programs to lower health care costs.

"Excavation, the principal mining process, 'which hitherto has been based largely on the intuition and logic of mining men, is increasingly receiving the attention of engineers and scientists versed in rock mechanics. The paper intro-duce the principles of this science in simplified form, directed both to underground and open-pit mining. Reference is made to the large annual tonnage from ore and rock excavations, which in 1967 were responsible for 250 million tons of mineral production in Canada.The urge to transform excavation into a continuous instead of an interrupted process is discussed with references to the various types of energies employed or proposed in rock breakage or excavation. Due to the rapid decay of applied energy in the discontinuous and heterogeneous rock environment, large confined blasts proposed for in-situ mining do not give much expectation of success as yet. Raises and ventilating shafts are already bored in reasonably hard rock. Tunnelling machines will be used for drifting and cross-cutting in the future, but continuous mining machines of the cuttmg and shearing type are not 'around the corner' for stoping typical orebodies. On the other hand, bed mining, particularly of coal, has led the way in continuous mining, and Remotely Operated Long-wall Face (ROLF) experiments are progressing in an encouraging way. Some reflections on the mining environment in relation to the human element are made."

Bauxite resources in China are mainly diaspore ore with the characteristics of low ratio silicon to aluminum. In order to obtain high quality of alumina product, flotation process is generally used to extract the aluminum from diaspore ore. Small aeration rate is needed for bauxite flotation, which requires air to be controlled accuracy. In addition, productive froth from bauxite flotation is too sticky to effects froth transportation. Air-forced XCF/KYF flotation machines are helpful for aeration control, while self-suction GF flotation machines benefits froth transportation. Zhongzhou aluminum plant of China Aluminum Group (Chinalco) uses 7 series of XCF/KYF /GF combined flotation machines to process bauxite. Air distribution, suspension characteristics, froth flow velocity and Al2O3 recovery were investigated, to evaluate the performance of flotation machines in one series and determine recovery contribution of each cell to the entire flotation circuit.The air distribution degree varies from 3 to 4, which is enough for bauxite floatation process. Froth in the tank could flow smoothly with a flow velocity of 2.4m/min. The recovery of the first KYF-40 flotation cell is the largest. Flotation concentrate of Al2O3 is up to 64.29%, the total recovery is about 75%, and the ratio of Al/Si has reached 10.4.

"Basic theoretical grounds of the methods applied for crushing and grinding parameters determination according to international standards are given in this paper. Statistical data about crushability and grindability research are shown. The potential relationship between the values of Fred Bond Work indices and John Starkey indices (Crushing index, Ball mill index, Rod mill index and AG/SAG index) are discussed in this paper. In order to establish correlation between the crushability and grindability indices the analysis of over 2 500 tests for 165 deposits located in different parts of the world was performed. The relationships among different types of energy consumed for crushing and grinding were determined. A method for preliminary estimation of energy consumption in semiautogenous + ball mill grinding circuit is suggested for its application in preliminary technological solutions development and technical-and-economic assessment."

A process has been developed to treat the copper gold ores from the Guelb Moghrein mine in Mauritania. The process consists of pressure leaching the sulphide concentrate, neutralising with the oxide ore, recovery of copper by SX/EW and of gold by cyanidation of the autoclave residue. This paper focuses on the pressure leaching step, and presents data from bench and pilot plant test programs. In particular, attention is drawn to the effects of temperature, grind size, neutralisation, retention time and solution recycle on the kinetics of copper dissolution from various flotation concentrates. Likely leach mechanisms are briefly discussed.

"INTRODUCTIONWhile today’s mine planning of land-based ore deposits follows methods, which are well established, mining standards for the deep-sea have not established. Having gained a basic understanding of geological settings, there is still a lack of tools and methods to assess and plan future mining projects in the deep-sea. In the framework of the “Blue Mining” research project (2014-2018) technologies and methods for the exploration and exploitation of deep-sea minerals are developed that will bring deep-sea mining a step closer. The “Blue Mining” project receives funding from the European Commission (EC; Framework Programme 7; GA No. 604500) and addresses all aspects of the value chain in the field of deep-sea mining. The project philosophy is that deep-sea mining is planned and executed in the most responsible manner: Ensuring societal benefits and profitability at acceptable resource utilization and lowest possible environmental footprint (Volkmann 2014).Inspired by the high-tech farming industry, a concept to mine seafloor manganese nodules (SMnN) was developed. Mining is considered to be similar to the potato harvest on land (Figure 1), which involves mining a field partitioned into long, narrow strips (Volkmann and Lehnen 2017). The proposed mining system composes of one mining support vessel (MSV), one or two self-propelled, crawler-type seafloor mining tools SMT(s) and different types of underwater vehicles. The MSV follows the mining route of the SMT(s), picking up the about potato-sized nodules from the seafloor. The ore is pre-processed in situ and is lifted on board of the MSV, where the ore is dewatered and loaded onto bulk carriers for transport to the purchaser. Processing and refining of ore is not subject of “Blue Mining” research."

This paper reviews the basic reactions of the blast furnace and the open hearth furnace, and then discusses the quarrying and sizing requirements of the limestone feed for each. Particular emphasis is placed on the lime-stone at Irish Cove, now being mined under an agreement between Scotia Limestone Limited and Dosco Steel Limited. The drilling and blasting operations are described, along with loading and haulage, plant flow, water supply, power supply and transportation facilities.
