The use of pulverized coal for electric power generation results in the production of vast amounts of fly ash. One potential use for waste fly ash is the production of pellets for lightweight aggregates. This paper is concerned with the role of the physical and chemical characteristics of two different fly ashes in governing their agglomeration or pelletization behavior and their strength characteristics. In batch balling experiments, fly ash pellet growth was found to be extremely sensitive to the amount of moisture added. One ash (Mohave) exhibits marked pozzolanic activity whereas the other (Jim Bridger) does not. The pozzolanic activity has a very pronounced effect on pellet growth kinetics, moisture requirements, and the effect of various additives on growth kinetics. Slow drying under ambient conditions produces strong pellets from Mohave ash whereas Jim Bridger ash pellets lacking in pozzolanic activity are weak. Rapid drying at high temperatures results in weak pellets because water necessary for hardening is driven out of the pellet. Steam curing enhances pellet strength. Locked-cycle pelletizing experiments exhibit expected oscillation in pellet production rates and attendant fluctuations in pellet green strength.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system there is a need to know when the material has developed a threshold early compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi) for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings. This equates to the material having developed enough strength to be self-supporting and allow for emplacement of the remaining support elements that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on-site in the first six hours after application using the ASTM C 116-90 (1990) standard. These advances were demonstrated in tests on five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using the field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. The findings of this NIOSH research for determining shotcrete early strength can improve mine safety by providing a method for determining initial site specific material property values to be used for design and as a means to conduct on-site quality control and monitoring during production.

Two lines of single stage autogenous milling circuits have been installed and commissioned as the primary grinding process for the Sino Iron project where magnetite ore is treated to produce iron concentrate via magnetic separation. Various challenges were encountered during the commissioning and ramp up stages which are discussed in the paper and include treating a highly competent ore in a closed circuit AG mill, operating the largest mills in the world and dealing with a number of engineering issues related to plant operability. Details of how these challenges were overcome are described as well as the observed operating characteristics of the mills and their optimisation through rigorous study, simulation and successful solution implementation. Further potential improvement opportunities are also discussed as part of the ongoing technical program at site.

Among the various theories proposed to account for the spontaneous ignjtion of coal, one which has at times been very strongly held is that the initial heating is due to the oxidation of iron pyrites. From the results described in this paper, it is possible to calculate roughly the rate of spontaneous heating of a specimen of finely-divided pyrites, on the assumption that all the heat developed is used in raising the temperature of the pyrites, and that none is lost. It is clear that where finely-divided pyrites occurs in considerable proportion among coal, it may be the chief factor in originating combustion, but that pyrites can only be the cause of a heating when it is present in considerable proportion, and in a very finely-divided state

"A tunnel project poses many challenges; the operation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) being one of them. Mechanized tunneling is known as a safe and effective alternative to other methods in terms of schedule and cost; however, efficiency can be severely affected by a bad TBM selection and qualification and employment of inexperienced operators. The success of a mechanized tunneling project involves a comprehensive and interdisciplinary consideration of all contributing factors such as TBM technical specification and selection, TBM design and procurement including ancillary equipment and tunnel linings. The tunnel equipment selection along with the operation can make or break the project. The objective of this paper is to address the importance of the skills and qualifications of the TBM crew with particularity to the TBM Operator. The study includes the Owner and Consultant involvement in the selection and pre-qualification of the TBM crew and specifically the TBM operator as well as the role of Contractor and TBM manufacturer in TBM operator training. This paper also analyzes the possibility of issuing a TBM operator certification, and discusses the benefits and significance of periodic training and certification programs. INTRODUCTION Training in the tunneling industry is not a new topic. The industry continues to evolve and become more complex with technology advances and expansion of mechanical tunnelling to mechanized shaft construction, large diameter drilling and mining industry applications. The need for professionals trained to operate mechanized tunnelling equipment is ever increasing, while there is a significant number of veterans who will be ageing out in the next 5 years. Consequently attracting young professional is a very important aspect of sustaining a qualified pool of professionals. For any given tunnel project, the owner and the engineer spend up to several years, studying the ground conditions during preliminary and final design. Post contract award the contractor spend additional months studying the ground again to develop the optimum means and methods for construction. All this time and money spent at the beginning of the project has the purpose of developing the optimum tunnel design, assessing the risk associated and implementing mitigation measures to reduce risks to acceptable levels. Following the tunnel design process, sophisticated TBMs are being specified and sourced to ensure the best tool for the job. The question raises here: Are there available experienced/trained professionals capable of operating these sophisticated machines?"

Glass is one of man's most versatile creations. ---The earliest glaze known---is about 12,000 B.C. ---The oldest pure glass is a moulded amulet of about 7,000 B.C.---. Indicative of a knowledge of properly-proportioned, quality raw-material, means were found for producing the first relatively clear, transparent glass at about the beginning of the Christian era. The fundamentals of almost all the modern, technical processes of manufacture were established during the 3rd Century. (1) Glassmaking, practiced in Colonial America, was moved toward the Ohio Valley in response to increasing demands for fuel. This move, beginning in the 1860's resulted in the use of the glass sands contained in the Oriskany (and St. Peter) sandstone. (2) Glass sand,(3) virtually pure, fine-to-medium-grained quartz sand(4) is the principal raw material used in the manufacture of glass; it constitutes proportions which range to a maximum of about 72% and seldom is glass made without it. However, acceptable glass sands are, invariably, those which most nearly fit the glass-producer's economic needs and any method used to evaluate a raw material's potential must finally prove equatable with such needs. As used in the United States, source-rocks of glass sand include sandstone, unconsolidated silica sands, quartzites and vein-quartz. Admixtures of silica sand and other (principally clay and feldspar), readily separable components have been proven viable. However, the silica sand, refined by nature to a high degree of purity, is the desirable product of exploration. If the term, standard, is justified by long-continued use, the Oriskany - and St. Peter sandstones are, together, the nonesuch of the glass sand industry they provide the principal tonnage of melting sand. According to Grimsley,(5) Ottawa, Illinois, glass-sand is considered the standard glass-sand of the West and the analyses of Berkeley Springs sand (Oriskany) compare most favorably with this sand.

THE property of Consolidated 1 Discovery Yellowknife Mines Limited, (Figure I) is situated in the Northwest Territories, approximately 50 air miles north of the town of Yellowknife. The mine is reached by a shaft which extends from surface to a depth of 4,000 feet, with working levels established at 1 50-foot intervals. Stopping operations are carried on throughout a vertical range of 2,000 feet, with both shrinkage and cut and fill methods being used, depending on the ground conditions. Production started in 1950 and milling is done in a 1 65-ton per day cyanide plant. During ten months of the year, the property is serviced entirely by air, utilizing charter aircraft from Yellowknife. A 4,000-foot runway near the mine was constructed from mill tailings. This strip is adequate to receive Bristol freighter planes carrying heavy loads. Other servicing is done by Otter aircraft, equipped with skis or wheels for winter and with pontoons for summer operations.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream acidity is widely used in MIW (mining influenced water). Tailoring pH (a measure of acidity) finds application for controlling key chemistry in both process and waste streams. Traditional lime addition for neutralization and precipitation is most often used but has high reagent costs and results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. A new adaptation of BPS’s patented DEMET™ technology (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform offers a potentially improved and “reagentless” alternative to traditional chemical addition for pH adjustment. Electricity rather than chemical addition utilized in BPS’s proprietary approach controllably tailors target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost processing technique yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. BPS’s “green” approach may yield lower operating (OPEX) and life cycle costs and significant reductions (up to 50%) in sludge generation compared to conventional lime treatment. It can also allow new opportunities to generate revenue via selective recovery of valuable processing byproducts. Specific savings and revenues depend on the target site chemistries, details, and processing goals. A more detailed discussion of the process and its operational principles may be found in Reference One.[1] Here application of the BPS treatment to POx (Pressure Oxidation) leaching as an alternative to traditional chemical addition is examined. An example operation process flow for gold mining is considered.[2] Promising processing points for potentially replacing conventional processes with DEMET are noted. The possibilities for lowering OPEX costs, lessening sludge creation, and capturing various valuable byproducts and residuals are examined. Financial life cycle benefit estimates of the principal gains provided by DEMET application to the example operation are noted. Extension and generalization of the analyses to a wider range of scenarios is explored."

"The discovery of the Mogador deposit concealed by 100 feet of overburden was the result of combined application of geological reasoning, ground geophysical surveys, studies of glacial float and extensive diamond drilling. The ground was acquired because it lay on the projected intersection of the Manville and Laflamme River faults. Systematic ground prospecting led to discovery of mineralized floats. A first unsuccessful exploration campaign lasted several years and consisted of 137 drill holes.In 1951 the boulder nests were reexamined and an associat'on of the mineralized float with boulders of a granodiorite, unknown in outcrops of the district, was established. Consequently, ground magnetic surveys were extended and re-interpreted, and a large anomaly interpreted as corresponding to a batholith was outlined. The existence of the batholith was immediately confirmed by drilling and the Mogador deposit discovered in third hole of new drilling programme in a zone of fractured volcanics paralleling southern contact of batholith.The Mogador deposit is a complex replacement of silicified volcanics by pyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena carrying values in silver and gold. A total of 1,230,000 tons has been indicated, most of it now classified as fully developed proven ore."

"During the past several years a great deal of discussion has centered around the question of the permissible limit of sulphur content in fuels for automotive and aviation motors. Under certain conditions of operation, sulphur in motor fuels causes the formation of corrosive substances which attack bearings, wrist pins, and other parts of engines. On the other hand, in making gasoline from certain stocks, the gasoline fraction normally contains a relatively large proportion of sulphur compounds. By the generally used processes of reducing the sulphur content, a significant part of the gasoline fraction is lost as motor fuel, and added expenses are entailed for chemicals, labor, and other process costs. This condition has been an economic burden to some refiners of high-sulphur crudes. In some instances the treating losses have been rather severe and the treating costs relatively high, but the data presented in this paper indicate that the reduction of sulphur content of motor fuel is a problem to a relatively small number of refiners and of little or no concern to the remainder; in fact, more than 90 per cent of the 153 samples analyzed passed the Federal specification requirement, Which limits the sulphur content to 0.10 per cent. 3This report is based upon the results of an examination for sulphur content, Doctor test, copper strip corrosion, and color of the samples collected during January, 1930, for the twenty-first semiannual gasoline survey of the Bureau of Mines. The results of the gravity ad distillation tests of the survey were published as Report of Investigations 2995. The numbering of the samples given in this report is the same as in Report of Investigations 2995; for example, No. 25 of this report is the same sample as No. 25 of Report of Investigations 2995."

The title of this paper implies the presence of silver, nickel, and cobalt minerals at, the Alhambra mine. Perhaps this should be amplified to include uranium, as pitchblende also occurs, possibly in mineable quantifies. A brief history of the Alhambra mine is of interest, both from a historical angle and as pointing up the importance of geology in the-present development. The Alhambra is one of several mines in the Bullards Peak or Black Hawk dis¬trict, ass it is more familiarly known, in southwestern. New Mexico, which was mined for silver in the 1880?s and 18901s, Silver valued between $500,000 and $1,000,000 was extracted from the mine in the 10 years prior to 1893, when operations ceased. Almost all the silver mined was native silver, although a small quantity of argentite was produced. Nickel and cobalt were recognized in the ores, but they were thought to be of no consequence.

Flexible hoses with rated working pressures up to 40,000 psi are used when high-pressure water jets are employed to cut rock or improve the performance of mining machines. Hose failures at such high pressures can result in serious injuries to workers. The Bureau of Mines used fatigue and burst tests to investigate the failure modes of high-pressure hoses at their rated working and burst pressures. Fatigue failure, at rated working pressures, occurred when the inner liner of the high-pressure hose broke, allowing water to seep through the wire wrapping, although the reinforcement wires did not break. At the burst pressure, all hoses failed catastrophically when the reinforcement wires broke. Low-pressure hoses placed over the high- pressure hoses for safety failed to contain water released by catastrophic failure.

World urban expansion puts constraints on the available land surface area of our major cities both for accommodating people as well as providing infrastructure and services whilst at the same time attempting to preserve the remaining natural environment. Whilst consideration is often given to underground planning for private and public transport infrastructure, the author is of the opinion that the current lack of underground planning of our cities that are suitable for underground development will have major long implications when finally the need for underground space planning is critical and ultimately recognised. This paper identifies the need for our city planners to integrate surface planning and underground planning as a ‘total planning solution’ where the city plan incorporates the elements of underground space planning as identified in this paper. Investigations by the author reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. The author uses the City of Brisbane as a case study for the potential introduction of underground space planning as part of the city plan. Despite efforts by the author to include the planning concept of underground commercial development in the latest Brisbane City Plan 2014 as well as four underground space workshops in Brisbane over the past 20 year through the Australasian Tunnelling Society (ATS), underground space planning for the City of Brisbane, apart from infrastructure projects, is not considered of significance to the City of Brisbane.CITATION:Robertson, A C, 2014. The Daniel-Johnson dam, formerly named Manicouagan-5 (Manic-5), is located 800 km northeast of Montreal (Quebec) in Canada. This is the largest multiple-arch concrete dam in the world consisting in 13 arches and 14 buttresses. Since its construction in 1969, various type of cracks have appeared on both downstream and upstream faces of almost all the arches of this concrete dam. As a part of the Daniel- Johnson’s dam safety assessment program, Hydro-Québec is currently performing structural analysis of the dam with advanced numerical models to better understand and predict the dam behaviour. Because the buttresses transmit all the arch loads to the rock mass, determination of the properties of the dam foundation should not be neglected in dam global safety analysis and also to insure that reliable input parameters are used in the dam numerical simulations. This paper summarizes the past and the more recent investigations of this foundation used to assess its safety and stability. Moreover, the use of rock mass classification to estimate the deformation modulus, based on empirical equations, gives values in the range of 30 to 40 GPa that are higher than expected values. Using those values in the numerical simulations for dam structural analysis gives an excellent correlation with displacements monitoring of the buttresses.

"Multistage model designed and used for more detailed description of floatation process. The study develops a new model of flotation kinetics description. It defines flotation as process that consists of several stages: air bubbles and particles are separate, air bubbles and particles form a raising aggregate, aggregate raises to froth layer. This description significantly differs from commonly used model, which is much simplified. The multistage model gives an in-depth description and considers different aspects of flotation. Experimental approval of the new model resulted in its accuracy.The model is to be used for description of all flotation processes’ kinetics of wastewater treatment. It helps in accurate designing of flotation treatment plants and may be used for further research of flotation process. Columnar flotation installation was designed by using multistage model. This installation consists of new tubular aerators with special ejectors, froth pressing system as well as unit of thin-layering lighting to catch microflotocomplex “particle – bubble”. Usage of tubular aerators allowed to aerate the overall volume of pulp. Due to use of special ejectors with longer mixing camera we state higher volume of small-sized floto-active bubbles. Use of multistage model allowed to optimize and get higher technological results of potash salts enrichment. Tests were conducted on centrifuges-floatation installation system. Meanwhile, froth concentrate contained mainly thin hydrophobic particles sized circa 0,1 mm. As a result we set that during floatation cleaning process of froth concentrate 95-98% of chloride potassium (KCI) is derived from foam.The final product satisfies production quality. Columnar floatation installation productivity was 17 – 21 m3/m2h, which is a high technological result. Columnar floatation installation is one of the best examples of concentrating equipment using nearly all technological indices."

As ore grades decline, ore deposits get harder and mineralogical complexity increases, metallurgical skills are more important than ever to ensure that today?s mining operations are operating efficiently and profitably. Yet specialist undergraduate degree programs have all but disappeared and metallurgical skills training for graduate engineers in the workspace if often haphazard. In response to this situation, specialists at the JK Centre in Queensland, Australia, have put together a professional development program designed to fast-track skills development for early career metallurgical professionals. The program, called ?MetSkill ® ?, is offered as a group training package for young metallurgists in the workplace. It is centred on a meaningful technical investigation negotiated between the JK Centre delivery team and the client company. As well as learning about project management and data collection and analysis, the participants study specialist topics such as comminution, flotation and mineralogy under the tutelage of senior research and consulting professionals. The technical investigation provides an opportunity for immediate practice of these new skills and JK Centre specialists are on hand to provide feedback and support throughout the program. The participants are employed across different operations in Australia and the Asia-Pacific, and although they occasionally come together for group training activities they are often separated by considerable distance. Specialist educational professionals from The University of Queensland have provided an innovative web platform to support collaboration and communication between all participants. This paper will describe the MetSkill ® program in detail, as well as providing a report on its initial roll-out to 2 groups of Australian graduate metallurgists in 2012

Natural Zeolites are a less expensive and in certain applications a superior alternative to organic ion exchange resins. Mining and metallurgical waste streams are difficult to treat because the effluents which contain potentially valuable heavy metals such as copper, lead, and silver are often highly acidic and contain significant quantities of suspended solids. Under rigorous operational conditions, certain natural zeolites can remove the metals, which if desired can be recovered by either elution or conventional smelting techniques. There are significant differences in cation exchange rate, selectivity and capacity as well as resistance to either high or low pH, blocking cations and tolerance to elevated or depressed temperature and pressure not only between different zeolite minerals but between the same mineral from different deposits. Applying natural zeolites to the treatment of mining and metallurgical waste streams depends on matching the specific zeolite to the effluent by characterization of the zeolite minerals.

"Flotation of fine (< 10 µm) minerals is a challenge exacerbated by the emerging practice of fine grinding flotation feed to better liberate targeted minerals; however, the ability of conventional flotation cells to float liberated fines remains questionable. The Gold Ore solution using Mach reactors was tested at Mintek, South Africa, and showed an ~180% increase in the Kelsall kfast factor, a projected recovery improvement of 4% for the Mach-reactor case, and final concentrate grade twice that of conventional flotation. Theory, pilot plant results, and key aspects of plant design, supplemented by operational plant observations after commissioning, are discussed.RÉSUMÉ Le procédé de flottation de minerais fins (< 10 µm) pose de grandes difficultés, lesquelles sont aggravées par la pratique émergente de l’alimentation du circuit de flottation avec des mailles de broyage très fines pour mieux libérer les minéraux ciblés ; la capacité des cellules de flottation classiques à flotter les fines de minerais libérées reste cependant discutable. La solution proposée par la société Gold Ore, qui utilise des réacteurs Mach, a été testée à Mintek, en Afrique du Sud ; elle affichait une augmentation d’environ 180 % du facteur kfast développé par M. Kelsall dans son modèle de flottation, une amélioration prévue de la récupération de 4 % dans le cas du réacteur Mach, et une teneur finale des concentrés deux fois plus importante que celle obtenue avec la flottation classique. A program was written which utilizes a remote teletype input to a time- sharing computer to plot charged particle or X-ray energy spectra which are stored in the memory of multichannel analyzers. The program, written in FORTRAN V, accepts the data printed out by the pulse height analyzer on paper tape and then, after reading these data tapes into the computer, plots on the teletype the desired energy spectra on a scale automatically adjusted for the maximum number occurring in the data. The program is flexible enough so that the researcher can subsequently expand or contract the vertical (intensity) or horizontal (energy) scales. With a slight modification, the program will accept data printouts from scalers or analog to digital converters. The program also includes a feature for integrating the energy peaks obtained by pulse height analysis.

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at &apos;.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. Several factors which contribute to the unusually low mining costs are:
