"China is currently the world's largest copper producer. In the last five years, 950 kt/y of smelting capacity was commissioned. Currently, about 1200 kt/y smelting capacity is under construction and about 2000 kt/y smelting capacity is under feasibility study. Ausmelt/ISA smelting and flash smelting technologies were commonly adopted in China. After the double-flash-smelter was first adopted in 2004, three new double-flash-smelters are scheduled. Recently, two new copper smelting technologies were developed in China. One is an improved bath side-blown smelting process, and another is the SK.S bottom blowing process. Both technologies have been in practice for over three years and have achieved good technical performance. Approximately 500 kt/y new smelting capacity in China and India will adopt these technologies. Both technologies have the advantages of low investment cost, low energy consumption and high flexibility for complex raw materials. This paper reviews ""green"" copper smelting projects in China and introduces the practices of the two new Chinese smelting technologies.IntroductionPresently, China is the largest copper producer in the world. As far as the smelting of copper is concerned, there are many smelting processes applied in industrial production, such as flash smelting, Noranda smelting, Ausmelt smelting, Isa smelting, the Mitsubishi process, Vanukov smelting, silver copper-smelting, SKS smelting, both side-blown smelting, traditional blast furnace smelting, electric furnace smelting, reverberatery smelting and so on . Except the last three traditional processes that are eliminated because of their failure to meet the requirements for environmental protection, all of the other above-mentioned methods are advanced smelting processes adopted nowadays."

This paper gives some insights into what to look for when reviewing feasibility studies. The review by a third party is an important element of the risk management process and may be the last remaining opportunity to uncover errors, or identify and reduce project risks on paper before they are converted to financial disappointments, steel and concrete monuments to process failures or cost overruns. The mining industry has had a spotty record in the area of estimating initial capital costs and operational performance, even though the standard of feasibility studies is generally acknowledged to have improved in the last decades. Third party reviews rarely have the luxury of enough time and unlimited funds, so where should the reviewers focus their efforts to be most effective? Assuming that the project already apparently meets investment criteria, the authors suggest where and how to look among fundamental project parameters for signs that serious flaws exist that have the potential to become project killers. We also give advice on how to review cost estimates without becoming lost in the details. The paper is supported with numerous actual examples.

THERE are two general approaches to the problem of increasing profits from an operation. One is to lower expense; the other is to raise income. Mechanical preparation of coal may be used for either purpose but a prudent consideration of many details must precede any decision lest the results be negative instead of positive. It is quite possible that any net gain will result from a combination of the two. Since mechanically prepared coal invariably is a better product qualitatively than a hand-picked coal from the same mine, it is a reason- able expectation that the customer will be willing to increase the producer's income by paying a higher price. Or there may be the possibility that a combination of mechanical mining plus mechanical cleaning will give a lower over-all production cost for the coal in the railroad car. More likely, there will be found a combination of these two factors. From the customer's point of view, the competitive delivered cost per B.t.u. considered in relation to such incidental factors as dust nuisance, handling properties, ash disposal, and ash fusibility determines what he will pay. In a bulk tonnage product such as coal, freight is a very considerable part of the delivered fuel cost, and obviously freight paid on incombustible ash has no economic attractions. INCENTIVE FOR CLEANING Coal is prepared in four major ways: 1 (I) by screening or sizing, (a) by mixing or blending, (3) by cleaning, including hand picking and mechanical cleaning, (4) by dustless treatment. By a combination of any or all of these methods, coal can be prepared to standard specifications. It is easily possible to have good cleaning and still get a poor final product because of faulty screening or mixing,

The Line Creek Mine is operated by Crows Nest Resources Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell Canada Resources Limited. It is located approximately 25 km north of Sparwood in southeast British Columbia (refer to figure 1). The Line Creek coal deposit is part of the Upper Elk Coalfield in the East Kootenays. The coal is a medium volatile, low sulfur, bituminous coal and is used as a coking coal. Coal close to the outcrop is typically of low F.S.I. and is processed for thermal use. The present pits have a total coal reserve of 30 million clean tonnes and is a multi-bench, open-pit operation. The coal is recovered by front shovel and backhoe combination, and hauled to the plant with a fleet of 120-tonne and 40-tonne capacity trucks. Line Creek is unique in that it can simultaneously treat both metallurgical and thermal coal in separate processing facilities (refer to figure 2). Run-of-mine coal is delivered to the truck dump. The plus 50 mm material is scalped off and reduced to minus 50 mm in two rotary breakers. The raw coal is then conveyed to one of five, 5000-tonne capacity, silos. Typically one silo is used for thermal coal and four for metallurgical coal (refer to figure 3).

Introductory.-There are many interesting and important events connected with the petroleum problem. The remarkable men who conceived the thought of transporting petroleum by pipe line, conserving the by-products of the commodity, and conducting extended investigation and research whereby the flash point of the oil was raised, its cost reduced and its Supply assured, are deserving of the gratitude of this nation. It was primarily the success attained by Captain Lucas, after his comprehensive search for oil in Texas and Louisiana, that was the impelling cause. which 'prompted the Navy Department to conduct the extensive series of liquid fuel-oil tests that were made from 1901 to 1903. The sensational discovery of oil at Spindle Top made a deep impression upon Rear Admiral George W. Melville, then Engineer-in-Chief of the Navy, and the discovery of the vast oil field in Texas convinced him that, within a generation, if not within a decade, crude petroleum was going to play a very important part in warfare, and that the commodity might possibly develop into a necessary munition of war. The United States' Commanding Position as a Petroleum Producer.¬ In the study of the various problems relating to the world's production of crude petroleum, the position of the United States is one of commanding importance, whether viewed from the industrial or the military aspect. The present yield of this country is practically double that of the rest of the world, and, in view of the productive and prospective fields possessed by various countries, together with the comprehensive and exhaustive search that has been made throughout the world for petroleum, it is extremely probable that this lead will be maintained for the next decade. As regards the character of the crude-oil yield of different countries, America possesses the greater part of the supply that contains a paraffine base, and therefore a considerable portion at least of the American product produces the best illuminant. Of all the crude-oil distillates, kerosene is in many respects the most important, and the Appalachian product for this purpose is favored, particularly in the Far East, above that of any other petroleum yield of the world.

"INTRODUCTION A commercial-scale pilot plant for gasification of lignite was completed by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak., early in 1945 as an extension of work on, gasification of low-rank coals initiated in a smaller pilot plant at Golden, Colo., during 1943. The development work on this plant was part of a program to make reducing gases from lignite for beneficiation of low-grade iron ores. The background of this project has been described in a previous report. 6/ The present report describes the major features of the large pilot plant, a record of experimental operating data during five runs totaling about 1,800 hours, .and results of experimental work on the small pilot plant at Golden during 1945.This project has created considerable interest because heretofore there has been little success in several attempts to gasify American lignites.Furthermore, the methed employed is a departure from conventional processes. Natural lignite is fed continuously into an externally heated annular retort and is converted into water gas by heat conducted through alloy metal walls. Because of the high thermal conductivity of metal, the rate of gasification is several times greater than can be obtained when employing refractory walls. The process has been developed to a part that leaves one major question unanswered. - ""How long will the alloy last under practical operating conditions?"" - and this question has aroussed the interest of the Coal Division of the Bureau of Mines in this new development.Owing to the high reactivity of the lower-rank fuels, the water-gas reactions proceed rapidly at medium temperatures of 1,650°F. to 1,800°F. These temperatures can be attained in a reaction zone heated by external means when the temperature of the retort does not exceed 1,900°F. while transferring from 6,000 to 7,000 B.t.u. per hour per square foot. Such rates are several times greater than can be attained through refractory walls as employed in the Didier-Bubaig 7/ and the Ahrens processes. 7/ Therefore, the investment cost of the gas generator per unit of capacity will be considerably lower for the higher-capacity process. However, the maintenance cost of metal vessels will be higher than that of refractory retorts, and this emphasizes the importance of large-scale operation to determine the life of an alloy retort under practical operating. conditions."

"INTRODUCTION The need for an accurate and precise analytical method for determining moisture in coals of high water content has been recognized by the coal industry as well as the fuel technologist. Interest in this particular phase of coal technology extends back to the early work of German investigators on the brown coals of Central Europe. Studies by these workers led to the establishment of a direct immiscible liquid-distillation method 4/ as the accepted moisture determining technique in European laboratories. Direct moisture determining methods, those methods that utilize various techniques to drive off the water from a given sample of coal and either collect the water in a calibrated receiver or selectively trap the water driven off in a suitable absorber, have found little favor in the United States. They have been treated merely as research tools.5/ The problem of moisture determination in low-rank coals of the United States has not been given much consideration because such coals contribute only about 2 percent of the total United States production. With renewed activity in low-temperature carbonization and with the growth of interest in coal and coal-tar hydrogenation, the American coals of lover rank containing 20 to 40 percent bed moisture will be subjected to extensive investigation. If the low-rank coals of the United States are to be accurately appraised, the need for qualitative and quantitative analytical proceeded becomes more pronounced. These coals, especially the lignites of Texas and North Dakota, are highly susceptible to oxidation, a process that proceeds to a greater or less extort when low-rank, high-moisture coals are treated by oven-drying methods. The extent of this atmospheric oxidation has been described and evaluated by numerous workers. 7/In many respects, the problem of moisture determination in low-rank coals, those found in the United States and the high-moisture coals of Central Europe, is similar. Conversely, the problem of moisture determination assumes a different aspect when the coals of the eastern and the middle-west sections of the United States are considered. Present methods, the loss in weight gravimetic-type procedures, serve adequately to test these low-moisture coals. The determination of moisture in coals containing 20 to 40 percent water should be approached from a direct method rather than from an indirect gravimetic-type procedure because of the oxidative tendencies of these coals and the demonstratrated inability of a loss-in-weight technique to remove all the water in a given sample of coal."

He arrives at the conclusion that the softer rails, or those that from their composition ought to be softer, wear better than the harder. But there is another condition which has an important bearing on the subject, and should not be overlooked,—the weight on a wheel. With the lighter weights of the past, the softer rails may have worn best; with the heavier weights of the future, the harder may wear best. Weights will probably be increased up to the capacity of steel to bear; then doubtless the harder steel will wear best. A leaden rail with ten pounds on a wheel might carry millions of tons, but with one hundred pounds on a wheel, it would be destfoyed by a few thousand tons. So in the days of iron rails, my experience was that the softer rails under light machinery stood better than some of the harder; but under heavy machinery the softer were much the most rapidly destroyed. "This paper shows a mathematical model based on finite elements, applied to bottom poured shell ingots of C.V.G. Sidor Plant. The model was used as a strategy to determine the thermal effects that are produced when solidification conditions are modified without interfering with the production process. The modification consisted of placing a thermal insulator on top of mould.The results obtained by the model indicated that the solidification time increases with insulator on base of the mould. With these results a significant number of casts were run with and without insulator. Latter by means of a metallurgical analysis it was determinated that the ingots cast with insulator reduce the level of non-metallic inclusions and the presence of internal blistering in seamless pipes.IntroductionThe process of fabrication of seamless pipes in SIDOR involves various steps of processing, such as heating the ingots, fabrication of the prelaminated, fabrication of the bored pipe, lamination of the pipe by passing through the pellegrine mill, heating the pipe in a walking bean furnace and final calibration through a calibrator mill. The material utilized for producing these pipes is provided entirely from a electrical arc furnace and casted ingots, especifically, from the superintendence of bottom pouring.The process of bottom pouring consists of positioning twelve moulds of diameters 415, 480 or 505 mm over a plate of grey cast iron in which exists a system of communicating vessels. The ingots are distributed around a central duct from which the steel flows down and filling gradually, each one of the moulds (Fig. 1)."

"Rhodesian asbestos is of high quality and is much in demand by American consumers. Production in Rhodesia was first reported in 1909. The production for this and each succeeding year is shown in the following table:The serious curtailment in production for the years 1912 and 1913 was occasioned by transportation difficulties. In 1914 a railway was projected to Victoria and thereafter production increased greatly. Up to 1916 asbestos was obtained,from the Victoria district only, but thereafter the Bulwayo district became an important,producer with minor quantities from Gwelo.In the Bulawayo district the productive area is about 2 1/2 miles long, with Shebanie mine at the north-west end, the Nil Desperandum at the south end, and the Birthday claims between them."

Photogrammetrists are studying with new interest the problems of mine mapping and mining engineers are beginning to see what photogrammetry can do for them. Administrators in a number of European and U. S. mines have tried photogram- metric methods and are finding that better maps and data, needed for mine development, can be produced with savings of time, men, and money. In addition to wide use in small scale mapping projects, photogrammetric methods are now used for producing large scale plans and maps in German coal and lignite mines, in some U. S. open pit mines, to inventory TVA coal stock piles, and to compute highway excavation volumes. In each case surveying and map compilation has been made more efficient and accurate by photogrammetry and at significant savings over ground methods.

Development of the Batu Hijau Project was successfully completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the final handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The development project had started more than three years earlier, in August 1996, when the Owner, PT. Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an EPC contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for design and construction of the project including: copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site, and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and procurement of mine equipment with its own forces. Bringing the Batu Hijau copper deposit into production was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Development of Batu Hijau was a complex project involving the work of tens of thousands of people in all parts of the world to complete engineering, manufacture and deliver equipment, supply materials, and build the plant. The ore deposit is located on the tropical island of Sumbawa in a remote and undeveloped section of Indonesia. The location and environment presented challenges for all phases and aspects of the project. To meet the challenges, the project team combined good planning and teamwork to best utilize the resources available. This approach assured continuity of personnel through construction to operations and minimized cost, resulting in completion of the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

14.1-1. Coal Mining. CORPORATE STRUCTURE. Most coal companies that operate surface mines had their beginnings as basically one-man organizations, with all decisions and controls in the hands of the founder. At the early stage of the company development, it is usually quite possible for one man to handle all management functions as the mining operations generally are quite localized and the founder can have a first-hand knowledge of all facets of the operation. However, with continued growth, the entrepreneur finds that he must limit himself more and more to the top level of management and delegate the day-to-day operation to others. An organization must be developed that provides not only for current operations but also for continued growth of the company through acquisition of coal reserves in market areas that the company desires to serve. In general, a successful coal company engaged in surface mining must develop an organization consisting of the following departments or divisions: operations, sales, engineering, exploration, land, purchasing, financial, and legal. Of course, all of these departments are not required in the beginning. When the company is small, there is much overlapping of functions. For instance, the operating department will handle purchases and the engineering department will also handle exploration and land functions. A growing surface-mining company has generally evolved through the various stages of development into an organization that is typical of large mining companies. An examination of a typical company and its various departments and their functions should give an insight into the organizational trends of surface mining companies. Having begun as a typical one-man organization, a company of today can be highly centralized, with firm control of all phases of the company's operations in the executive offices. This is achieved by having all department heads (Fig. 14.1-I), as well as the senior management, based in central offices.

In a cool mine, tapping high-pressure lines through reducing valves lowers the temperature beyond remedy. It is the writer's suggestion that, for low-pressure work, law-pressure air ,should be generated in a compressor installed underground adjacent to the work, and that the jacket-water of the compressor should be utilised for re-heating purposes. Such a system of compressed air distribution, designed especially for service in cool mines, is described in the following notes. The suggested system includes a three-wire pole line from the sub-station to the opening nearest to the working face, with a cable connection extending to the latter from the openings; an electrical centrifugal unit; a reservoir excavated in the ground; and a distribution line, re-heated by jacket-water. As regards the reservoir, it may be pointed out that in many mines there are blind or abandoned tunnels that could be used for the purpose. The centrifugal type of compressed air machine is a comparatively new departure, and it was formerly considered that such a machine, operating at less than 1,000 kilowatts per unit, would be commercially impracticable. At the present time, however, these machines are being built in Europe for as little as 400 kilowatts per unit, and as much as 110 lb. per sq. inch pressure. One advantage which these centrifugal machines have over other types is that they may be driven by plain induction motors, without the help of special starters-a consideration of the first importance where the electrical regulations are severe.

lsoembrittlement curves depicting the influence of time and temperature in the range 800' to 1260°F (425' to 680°C) on the development of embrittlement in a commercial chromium alloy steel and a commercial molybdenum alloy steel are presented. Two distinct regions of embrittlement occur in the chromium alloy steel: I—at 800' to 1000°F (425' to 540°C) and 2—in the region just below the lower critical temperature. Embrittlement is most pronounced at 800' to 1000°F, decreasing very rapidly with increasing temperature above this region, only to increase again as the lower critical temperature is approached. The data suggest two distinct modes of embrittlement with possible superposition of the two modes at extended embrittling times in the temperature range 1100° to 1150°F (590' to 620°C). While the molybdenum alloy steel shows little susceptibility to embrittlement at 800' to 1000°F (425' to 540°C), considerable embrittlement may occur just below the lower critical temperature. THE subject of temper embrittlement in alloy steels has received considerable attention in the last few years. Points of view on the mechanism of embrittlement differ, however, resulting in part from the incompleteness of the data developed and in part from the speculation regarding the susceptibility of plain carbon steel to temper embrittlement. Libsch, Powers, and Bhat1 carried out short-time embrittling treatments on an AISI 1050 steel and demonstrated that hardened plain carbon steels are quite susceptible to embrittlement when tempered in the range from 850°F (455°C) to the lower critical temperature. The isoembrittlement diagram,' representing the embrittling characteristics of this steel, is reproduced in Fig. 1. It is evident from the shape of the curves shown that embrittlement in plain carbon steel increases progressively with both temperature and time in the embrittling range. A comparison of the isoembrittlement diagram for AISI 1050 steel with that presented by Jaffe and Buffum' for an SAE 3140 steel shows that up to 930°F (500°C) the isoembrittlement characteristics of the plain carbon steel are similar to those of SAE 3140 steel, although the embrittlement is much more severe in the latter steel. Above 930°F (500°C), the rate of embrittlement in the plain carbon steel increases continuously with increasing temperature; whereas, in the SAE 3140 steel, the embrittlement rapidly decreases. The influence of alloying elements upon embrittlement during tempering thus appears to cause a decrease in embrittlement above the region of maximum embrittlement, i.e., 850" to 1000°F. The question naturally arises as to what effect individual alloying elements have upon the embrittling characteristics of the plain carbon steel. Current knowledge on the influence of alloying elements on temper brittleness may be found in the review papers of Hollomon" and Woodfine. Hollo-mon," from the results of other investigators, has shown that, in general, the amount of embrittlement increases with increasing alloy content (except for molybdenum and possibly tungsten and columbium). Jaffe and Buffum," by a comparison of the embrittlement in a plain carbon steel with that of a SAE 3140 steel postulated that the presence of alloying elements in moderate amounts tends to retard the development of temper brittleness. It is difficult to determine what effect chromium has upon temper brittleness, since most of the information available has been based on the combined effect of other elements with chromium, particularly nickel and manganese. However, Wilten, and recently Jolivet and Vidal,' Vida1, and Woodfine have reported that chromium steels are temper brittle, that the embrittlement is reversible with a maximum rate of embrittlement at approximately 975°F (525"C)," and that the susceptibility increases with increasing amounts of chromium. Taber, Thorlin, and Wallacel" have found a large embrittling effect with increasing chromium content in a medium C-Mn-Ni steel. But Hultgren and Chang," from their experiments conducted on synthetically prepared ternary Fe-C-Cr alloys, could not conclude that these alloys are susceptible to temper embrittlement. However, on addition of manganese or phosphorus, these Fe-C-Cr alloys became susceptible, from which fact they concluded that the embrittlement developed in chromium-bearing Fe-C alloys is due chiefly to the presence of these elements. Considerable data are available to show that molybdenum decreases the susceptibility of steel to temper embrittlement. However, its effectiveness in preventing or decreasing embrittlement appears limited to its presence in small amounts. Vidal" has shown that a plain 2 pct Mo steel was susceptible. Hultgren and Chang" also have shown that molybdenum additions in excess of 2 pct to synthetically prepared Ni-Cr steels did not prevent embrittlement. Jolivet and Vidal' and Lea and Arnold found that molybdenum reduced temper brittleness. Lea and Arnold further stated that molybdenum decreased the rate of embrittlement rather than the total amount of embrittlement, whereas Preece and Carter" have shown that the presence of molybdenum greatly reduces the equilibrium extent of the change at a given temperature but does not appear to influence the rate of embrittlement. There appears to be very little information as to how molybdenum by itself affects the temper brittleness susceptibility of a plain carbon steel.

Numerous mineral deposits of somewhat limited extent and grade are associated with most of the Tertiary granitic intrusions in the Cascade Mountains of Washington. The Silver Star area in southwestern Washington is typical of many of these small, and at the present time, economically marginal mineralized areas. Small but fairly high grade deposits of copper, lead, and zinc sulfides are found within the borders of a small granodiorite stock, and in surrounding Tertiary volcanics. This paper will discuss these deposits and their genetic relationships with the intrusion.

The first neutrinos in nature ever detected by man were "caught" in a unique laboratory some 3 km (over 2 miles) underground in one of the world's deepest mine shafts at East Rand Proprietary Mines (ERPM), Boksburg. Only 100 m from where gold is being mined from the rock face a small team of South African and American physicists work on one of the most fascinating and important fundamental research projects that is currently exciting the imagination of the scientific world. Neutrinos are sub-atomic particles just as are protons, neutrons and electrons, but they are unique in that they have neither electric charge nor mass. Cosmic neutrinos travel at the speed of light and penetrate stars and planets. Even a million kilometres of solid lead would not provide a satisfactory shield against them. Stars are believed to "burn" by means of nuclear reactions which produce enormous fluxes of neutrinos. The sun, for example, illuminates the earth with visible light, but also bathes it with neutrinos. After World War II, two American physicists, Profs Frederick Reines and Clyde Cowan, experimenting at a large nuclear reactor, succeeded in obtaining direct evidence of the existence of the laboratory-produced neutrino. It then became very important to establish whether neutrinos also existed in nature. This knowledge would lead to a greater understanding of the forces of nuclear physics, of the behaviour of nuclear particles and, indeed, is also relevant to astrophysics. From the start it was clear that the search for "natural" neutrinos would be difficult. Questions which arose were- * how could they be traced if they were without mass or electric charge? * how could other nuclear particles be screened off? * could these not be wrongly detected, or even prevent accurate detection of neutrinos? Neutrinos were known to be produced along with charged particles, by the reaction of primary cosmic rays with the constituents of the atmosphere. It was also known that when the neutrinos collided with matter, they themselves produced the same type of charged particle which could be detected if the unwanted charged particles from the atmosphere could be screened off. What was needed, therefore, was a laboratory where the particles produced in the atmosphere could be screened out, yet which would receive and detect the particles produced by the neutrons' collision with the matter (solid rock) in the vicinity of the laboratory. This meant that scientists either had to build a laboratory with an enormously thick lead shield for their detection work. . . or they could go as near as possible to the centre of the earth where only charged nuclear particles of the very highest energies could penetrate. ERPM was clearly the most suitable place in the world where so effective a "neutrino trap" could be set. Under more than 3 000 m of solid rock the apparatus for detecting neutrinos is well shielded against unwanted nuclear particles produced in the cosmic radiation which can reach the laboratory only in a steeply vertical trajectory. Other particles are easily stopped by the great thickness of rock. The air-conditioned laboratory is at one end of a 150 m long tunnel, 2,5 m high and wide, blasted from the rock. The electronic recording equipment is housed here, while the rest of the tunnel is filled with the detection system. When a charged particle passes through a detector element, it produces a minute flash of light which is recorded and which triggers a flash-tube array. This then defines the trajectory of the charged particle, which is also recorded on film for analysis. So far 82 neutrinos have been detected, 50 at the present level and 32 at a higher level, and the findings have borne out the physicists' theoretical expectations. In this joint project Profs Reines, J. P. F. Sellschop, Director of the Witwatersrand University's Nuclear Research Unit and M. F. Crouch of the Case-Western Reserve University of Ohio are the Chief Investigators. A theoretical analysis of the austenite-martensite transformation is presented which predicts the habit plane, orientation relationships, and macroscopic distortions from a knowledge only of the crystal structures of the initial and final phases. THIS paper presents a new theory of the formation of martensite. This theory makes possible the calculation of the austenite planes on which the martensite plates form, the orientation relationship between the austenite and martensite crystal axes, and the macroscopic distortions which are observed. The only input data needed are the crystal structures and lattice parameters of the austenite and martensite. Considerable effort has been devoted over the past thirty years to the development of an understanding of the crystallographic features of martensite reactions. Much of this work has been done on steels and iron-nickel alloys, for which a great deal of data has been accumulated concerning the shape and orientation of the martensite plates, the relative orientations of the austenite and martensite crystal axes, and the observable distortions which result from transformation. These observations are reviewed in refs. 1, 2, and 3. The first major step toward an understanding of these phenomena was made in 1924 by Bain,' who showed that the a body-centered cubic structure can be produced from the 7 face-centered cubic structure by a contraction of about 17 pct in the direction of one of the austenite cube axes and an expansion of 12 pct in all directions perpendicular to it. Since that time, most of the efforts at further interpretation have been made by investigators who have worked from the phenomenological data, incorporating some of the information from the lattice properties, and have sought an analysis into likely deformations which would produce the observed results."- "11 but the three most recent papers on the subject have already been reviewed in some detail." Machlin and Cohenl0 measured the components of the distortion matrix and verified that the habit plane is a plane of zero distortion and rotation for the (259) case. They showed that the measured distortion matrix, when applied to the parent lattice, does not yield the product lattice and hence some inhomogeneous distortion must occur. Frank,u working from the lattice properties and taking some clues from the observations, considered the correspondence of close-packed rows and planes in the austenite and martensite. He predicted substantially the observed lattice relationship and habit plane for certain steels which have a (225) habit. Geisler12 suggested that there is a natural tendency for the habit plane to be a (111) and postulated certain slip processes to account for the fact that the experimentally observed habit plane is irrational and deviates from the assumed one. The present work differs from previous treatments of martensite formation in that it permits calculation of all the major manifestations of the process. Habit plane indices, orientation relationships, and observable distortions are all calculated from a knowledge of the crystal structures of the initial and final phases alone. The calculations contain no adjustable parameters. The agreement found between calculated results and the observations reported in the literature constitutes powerful evidence in favor of the mechanism of martensite formation proposed. The theory is applicable to systems other than steel (as is discussed later in this paper) which exhibit a diffusionless phase change but because of the wide-spread interest in the austenite-martensite transformation, particular attention will be given to the iron-base alloys. For other systems which undergo a similar face-centered cubic to face-centered tetragonal transformation, the mathematical treatment is identical with that presented here. Hence the theory successfully describes the transformation in the indium-thallium alloy.'" Homogeneous Transformation to Martensite The distortion which any homogeneously transforming volume of austenite undergoes in order to become martensite is shown in Fig. 1, as was first suggested by Bain.' (This distortion will hereafter be referred to as the "Bain distortion.") This specification of a contraction along one cube axis ;ombined with an expansion in all directions perpendicular to this axis describes what is properly called the "pure" distortion associated with this transformation. The distinction between a "pure" and an "impure" distortion plays an important part in the discussion which follows. A "pure" distortion is characterized by the existence of at least one set of orthogonal axes fixed in the body which are not rotated by the distortion. (These are called the "principal axes" of the distortion.) No such set of axes exists in the case of an "impure" distortion. On the other hand, an impure distortion can always be represented as the result of a pure distortion combined with the rotation of the specimen as a rigid body. China is the largest coal producer in the world. In 2012, the coal production in China is 3.65billion tonnes, accounting for approximately 49% of global coal production. The raw coal production in 2012 was 3.8% more than the year 2011. 56% of total raw coal has been washed. The increase in raw coal production also promotes technology to be developed and brings separation capacity become larger and larger in coal processing in China. At present, over 40 extra-large scale coal preparation plants (each plant has capacity of more than 10 Mtpa) are in operation in China, the largest one is 32.5 Mtpa. Heavy medium separation are widely used in new built coal preparation, the washing limit for thermal coal feed lower and lower, the equipment selection tends larger which brings the whole washing system simplified, the local equipment developed and manufactured are more and more used. By discussing designs of several typical thermal coal preparation plants and coking coal preparation plants in China, this thesis introduces the current design of China?s extra-large coal preparation plants, and sums up the prevailing design features and trends of extra-large coal preparation plants.
