Minute of the Board of Directors, Jan. 26, 1917 In the name of all the members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, this Board extends to. Mr. Herbert C. Hoover, an honored Vice-President of the Institute, on the occasion of his present temporary return to his native land, the cordial welcome of his colleagues, and their congratulations upon the noble work splendidly done by the Commission for Relief in Belgium of which he is the head. It is understood that a leading purpose of Mr. Hoover's visit to America at this time is the collection of additional funds, to be administered by his Commission in the care of the destitute children of Belgium. To this enterprise endorsed by both the belligerent parties, as well as inspired by the purest and tenderest sentiments of humanity, contributions are solicited from engineers, especially through an organization known as the "Belgian Kiddies Limited," which this Board, heartily approving its object and method, recommends to the consideration of the members of the Institute. On motion duly seconded it was unanimously VOTED.-That this minute be spread upon the record of the Board, and published in the Bulletin, and that a copy thereof be transmitted to Mr. Hoover, and to the San Francisco Section of the Institute.

It is well known that certain silicates such as the feldspars and beryl can be readily floated from quartz at a low pH value using a long chain cationic collector in the presence of a fluoride.1-3 However, the mechanism whereby the fluoride activates feldspars and beryl is not known. Indeed, only a few authors have even speculated about possible mechanisms.1,3,4 As a first approach to the problem, it is perhaps best to look closely at the interesting character of hydrofluoric acid and how it dissolves silica and silicic acid. Hydrofluoric acid, unlike hydrochloric acid, is a weak acid with a dissociation constant of about 3.53 x 10-4 at 25°C.5 The reason for the weak acidic character of HF lies in the very small size of the fluoride ion.6 The pKa value is 3.45 which means that at pH 3.45 half the HF is present in molecular form and half in ionic form. The anion present is probably HF2.-6 At pH values below the pKa value, molecular concentration increases rapidly at the expense of the HF2- anion. It is known that HF readily attacks glass, silicates, quartz and silicic acid. The equation usually cited pertaining to the first step in HF attack of silica is6-'

Rare earth element (REE) data are reported for ores, sul?de-bearing rocks and host rocks from massive sul?de deposits and barren sul?de facies iron formations in Proterozoic volcanic rocks of the Flin Flon-Snow Lake area, Manitoba. Some of the rare earth elements (e.g., Eu), are selectively leached in zones of intense alteration and redeposited together with the sul?des and silicatesin the uppermost parts of the alteration zones and at the rock-water interface. Chondrite normalized REE pro?les of layered sul?de ores and exhalites proximal to the deposits typically have positive europium anomalies and are enriched in light REE. In contrast, barren sul?de facies iron formations exhibit negative or ‘normal’ Eu pro?les. REE data are useful to explorationists in determining the presence of ‘off-hole’ metal-bearing sul?de zones, in distinguishing metal-poor sul?dic layers related to ‘economic’ hydrothermal activity from barren sul?de facies iron formation and in some instances as a means of establishing ‘ore-equivalent’ strata.

This paper describes an experimental method for monitoring diesel-generated exhaust gas pollutants in a deadended drift to assess the effect of control approaches. Experiments were conducted to determine the relative merits of these ventilation configurations: no auxiliary ventilation, induction ventilation at the entrance to the drift, and ventilation of the dead-ended drift with positive displacement tubing. The drift used in this experimental work was approximately 32 m long and slightly downsloping, with an everage height and width of 2.4 and 8.6 m, respectively. For this drift, it was found that ventilation with positive displacement tubing provided the best removal of diesel-generate pollutants. Induction ventilation appeared to be the least effective of the three methods examined.

"Mineral prospectivity modelling of polymetallic nodule deposits has been completed over the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (CIEEZ) using the GIS based Weights of Evidence modelling technique. Polymetallic nodules, also known as manganese nodules, have been explored as a possible resource for a number of metals including cobalt since the early 1970s. Recent data on the nodule composition and abundance in the CIEEZ has led to a renewed interest in the prospectivity for manganese nodules in the region. The predictive modelling has used the most recently accepted mineral model for polymetallic deep-sea nodule deposition to identify factors that are most likely to map the presence of this type of mineralisation in the CIEEZ.Manganese nodules form on the deep seafloor as concretions formed by concentric layering of iron and manganese hydroxides around a core and they grow at a very slow rate, on the order of millimeters per million years. The available data for the CIEEZ indicates a greater abundance in the area of nodules formed by hydrogenetic processes, which are the result of slow precipitation of metallic components from seawater. The environment in which the nodules are most abundant is at depths between 4,000 m and 6,000 m in areas of low sedimentation rate. Hydrogenous nodules commonly grow on siliceous and pelagic clay sediment, they are less common on other types of sediment."

In this Bureau of Mines investigation a device was developed that permits the determination of the modulus of elasticity of the stress-relief cores obtained in the process of making in situ stress measurements. This determination is made by hydraulically loading the external surface of the stress-relief cores and by measuring the corresponding borehole deformation. The theoretical relationship between the borehole deformation, the applied pressure, and the modulus of elasticity is presented. Also, experimental results obtained from measurements on a simulated stress-relief core made of aluminum and on a limestone stress-relief core are given. Because of the symmetrical loading obtained with this device, the isotropy of the core material can be evaluated. With this device it is also possible to study the effect of eccentricity, that is, the effect within cores in which the inner hole is not coincident with the long axis of the specimen.

ACCELERATED programs, as discussed in this paper, refer to the year-around operation of a college or university with three sixteen-week or four twelve-week terms per year, with pauses between sufficient only to allow the administrative group to perform their functions. In most engineering schools, under such conditions, the conventional four-year course can be condensed to two years and eight months. These accelerated programs of study, which now exist in most of our technical institutions, were forced upon us under the influence of the outburst of wartime patriotism, perhaps one might go so far as to call it hysteria. Many of us felt and hoped that these programs were temporary expedients, but the cold hard threat of permanency now rears its head; consequently we should examine the merits and shortcomings of the new order, and evaluate its effect on our educational system, since it may persist in some form in the postwar years, because of the changing political and financial situation. "Recently, Antamina has completed an expansion program of its operations which increased the thoughput in grinding from acapacity of 109 to 130 ktpd. After commissioning, throughput could be exceeded in grinding and downstream processes but primary crushing became a major bottleneck to the overall production process.With an objective to increase the processing capacity of the primary crusher system, a multidisciplinary team was formed with members of Mine, Concentrator and Maintenance departments, who analyzed the overall context of this process restriction. The main implementations developed were: automatic discharge systems of trucks, logic to count trucks and elaboration of a daily performance report. Following implementation of developed improvements, the numbers of discharged trucks to crusher were increased from 449 to 614 units per day. As a result, the expansion target of 130 ktpd was exceeded and processing capacity was increased from 109 ktpd to 145 ktpd. This improvement adds very significant economical value for Antamina.INTRODUCTIONAntamina is a copper-zinc mine located in the Peruvian Andes. Compañía Minera Antamina is owned by BHP Billiton (33.75%), Xstrata (33.75%), Teck Cominco (22.5%), and Mitsubishi (10%). The mine was commissioned in 2001 with a capital investment of US$2.3 billion, and had a nominal 77,000 ktpd mill capacity. Mining, milling, flotation, and tailings impoundment take place at the mine site, which sits at an altitude of 4,300 m above sea level. The deposit is a polymetallic skarn ore body with intrusive phases of quartz-monzonite porphyry into Cretaceous aged limestone. Copper is present mainly as chalcopyrite with a minor bornite component. Zinc is present as sphalerite. Molybdenum is present as molybdenite. Some lead, bismuth, and silver are associated with the sulphides. The deposit is currently classified into six main ore types [Dechert, 2006], grouped into two categories: copper and copper-zinc. The mill produces four concentrate types: copper, molybdenum, zinc, and lead-bismuth. Copper and zinc, concentrates are transported by pipeline down to the port of Huarmey. Molybdenum and lead-bismuth concentrates are bagged and trucked to port."

"Exploration for copper, in a region of 7,000 square miles on the Arctic coast between longitudes 114 and 118 degrees west, has covered a period of nearly 200 years. Occurrences of native copper, used by the natives for tools and weapons, have been reported since the early part of the eighteenth century. In J 771 Samuel Hearne of the Hudson's Bay Company, in the course of his classic 3-year journey from Fort Churchill, became the first white man to see the deposits, and incidentally the first to reach the Canadian Arctic coast by land. During the next 140 years the deposits were mentioned by every explorer and traveller who passed through the area. A good historical summary of this literature has been presented by Tyrrell (1912).In 1911-12 the Douglas-Sandberg party did the first geological mapping along the Coppermine River and Dismal Lakes (Douglas, J., 1913; Douglas, G. M., 1914), and described the copper occurrences there. In 1914 J. J. O'Neill (1924) of the Canadian Arctic Expedition investigated the showings on Bathurst Inlet. In 1929-31 two Canadian exploration companies sent prospectors and geologists to the area (Gilbert, 1931; Norrie, 1931; Duncan, 1931). Since that time only brief references have been published (Kidd, 1931; Stockwell and Kidd, 1931; Lord, 1941, 1951; Washburn, 1947). In 1943-45 an area of more than 1,500 square miles was prospected by American Metal Co. of Canada, Ltd., under the direction of the writer. Forty-nine showings were examined; seven of these were mapped in detail by plane-table and two were sampled by 27 short diamond drill holes totalling 3,061 feet. All holes were in permanently frozen rock, and the deepest vertical distance reached was 206 feet. Five groups of claims were staked. These later lapsed, but one of the groups was restaked in 1951, and assessment drilling and some trenching were carried out in 1952-53. Results were disappointing, and the claims have been allowed to lapse.The area is within the Arctic Circle, northeast of Great Bear Lake and 360 miles north of Yellowknife on Great Slave Lake. For exploration purposes, access is by aircraft from Yellowknife. During the short open season heavy freight can be brought by sea to Coppermine at the mouth of the river, either from Aklavik at the mouth of the Mackenzie or around Alaska. Concentrates would have to be moved by these routes.Although none of the deposits so far found is mineable under present conditions, the total volume of copper in the numerous showings marks the district as a major area of copper mineralization, which may some day be of economic importance."

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Russell County , Va . Almost 2 million tons of coal was mined in 1961 ; 75 percent of the coal was cleaned mechanically in preparation plants in the county . The coal of Russell County is ranked as medium- to high- volatile bituminous , contains small amounts of sulfur , and generally requires some cleaning to reduce the ash content to limits acceptable for metallurgical purposes .

Tailings from three historical mining areas in the UK were leached in columns under a simulated weathering programme which was chosen to represent periods of 1 and 2 years at 3 different ambient temperatures. The total concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in the primary ore minerals present in the tailings showed only a limited correlation with metal concentrations in the leachate. The leachate from columns of tailings that were maintained at a temperature of 25 (+/-3) degrees C contained, on average, 50% more Pb and 75% more Cu than leachate from tailings that were maintained at a temperature of 10 (+/-3) degrees C. The pH values of leachates from all three types of tailings at 25 (+/-3) degrees C were 0.2 units lower than those from columns maintained at 10 (+/-3) degrees C. The concentration of Cd and Zn in the tailings leachates showed no marked difference at the different temperatures. The composition of the leachate was found to be dependent on the type of gangue mineral, the presence of other sulphide minerals and the formation of secondary iron minerals. A comparison of the concentrations of heavy metals in the leachates produced in the laboratory with those in leachates that were collected in the field over a similar period of time from two of the mine sites showed that concentrations were of a similar order.

PROBABLY one of the most perplexing problems with which a mill operator contends is the proper evaluation of his mill results. True, he accurately determines his recoveries of metals and grades of products monthly, weekly, and often daily. These figures do not of themselves directly translate to mill economics. When one figure is unusually good there may be an offsetting circumstance. The advantage of high lead or zinc concentrate grade may be offset by poorer recovery; high lead recovery may be offset by poorer zinc recovery, or vice versa; and so on. Besides, grades or recoveries may not of themselves mean more than a reflection of the grade and character of the ore during the period under study. What the operator sorely needs is some one measuring stick that tells him when he has achieved his greatest return, regardless of grades or recoveries-for if he knows his methods and practices are yielding the optimum return he need no longer concern himself with the assays of products and tailings, or the corresponding distribution of metal values. At first blush it would appear that the obvious answer to this is the actual money return to the mill. Paradoxical as it may seem, however, money return does not make a dependable yardstick any more than do grades and recoveries, as ore conditions would vary enough to bring about greater money return during periods when the actual metallurgical work is not as good. The mill operator, of course, should always aim for the greatest return on the ore, once it is in the mill bins, with proper attention always to mill treatment cost. The need of a proper yardstick becomes more imperative with the increasing complexity of the problem. In the case of a simple, single-product operation on a fairly uniform ore, in which only one metal is of significant importance, the need is not great, as grade and recovery pretty well tell their own story. At the other extreme is the operation that makes three or four separate marketable products from a complex mixture of heterogeneous ores that vary tremendously in individual metal contents and ratios, degree of oxidation, and other characteristics, and in which gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc are all significant values. ECONOMIC RECOVERY The first attempt at obtaining a proper single yardstick for a fairly complex ore with which I am familiar is the use of the "Economic Recovery" term at the leadzinc flotation mill of the Sunnyside Mining and Milling Co., Eureka, Colorado. This method had been applied there early in Sunnyside flotation-mill history (not later than 1920) and credit for the innovation I believe belongs to Messrs. Kuryla and Marquand. The phase diagram of the Pseudobinary section PbTe-Fe was determined. It was found to contain a monotectic and a eutectic reaction, the latter one taking place at 14 at. pct Fe and 875° * 5°C. The solid solubility of iron in PbTe was found to be 0.3 at. pct by electronmicroProbe analysis. No solubility of PbTe was detected in iron. Slight deviations from true pseudobinary behavior were found to occur in the range of - 5 to 10 at. pct Fe. In the course of a general investigation of reactions of various metals with lead and tin telluride,' the lead telluride-iron system was reinvestigated. It had been established much earlier than iron does not chemically react with lead telluride but forms a eutectic with a melting point of 879" The eutectic composition or other related information has never been reported, but for a number of years iron has been in general use for contacting of lead telluride and lead telluride alloys for thermoelectric applications. It seems therefore desirable to clarify the exact constitution of the system to furnish a base for the long-term evaluation of bonds made between lead telluride and iron either by pressure contacting or by brazing methods. I) EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Lead telluride-iron alloys were prepared in 10-g charges, using premelted lead telluride. This material was prepared from high-purity, semiconductor-grade lead and tellurium obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and described as 99.999 pct pure. The iron used was "Armco" iron; the major impurities found here were 0.02 pct C, 0.018 pct Si, and 0.015 pct Cr. All remaining impurities were less than 0.01, the total of all impurities not exceeding 0.15 pct. Charges were prepared in closed quartz arnpoules which were evacuated and in some cases backfilled with high-purity argon to retard excessive lead telluride evaporation and deposition in slightly cooler parts of the ampoule. For high iron concentrations, this can lead to total separation of the constituents, since the vapor pressure and the sublimation rate of PbTe are quite high.4 Nevertheless, since the ampoules are closed, no change in overall composition was expected and the nominal composition of all alloys was assumed to be retained. X-ray diffraction analysis, thermal analysis, and microsections were used in the evaluation of the alloys. The nature of the system was such that X-ray diffraction was not particularly helpful. It merely served to establish that at all concentrations PbTe and a! iron were in equilibrium at room temperature. Thermal analysis was carried out by taking direct temperature vs time curves on a Sargent recorder where a width of 10 in. was kept as 1 or 0.5 mv by use of an automatic bucking voltage network. Quartz ampoules with minimized dead space, coated with boron nitride and fitted with a thermocouple reentrant, were used as containers for the charge. At high temperatures and over long periods of time, boron nitride reacts with iron. For the thermal analysis runs, however, this was not significant. More significant was the fact that the vapor pressure of PbTe at some of the meas -uring temperatures apparently exceeded I atrn quite considerably. This, in some cases, caused the slightly softened quartz tubes to blow out if great care was not taken to contain them and minimize time and temperatures used. As containers pure nickel tubes were used which also served to avoid temperature gradients in the quartz ampoule. Nevertheless, the experimental difficulties at high temperatures were severe and the monotectic temperature could therefore not be determined accurately. In general, the accuracy reached by the thermal analysis setup in this case is *4"C as determined with gold, silver, and tin, under the conditions of analysis here. Inherently, the apparatus is capable of reaching accuracies better than i 1°C. Also, difficulties were encountered in microsection-ing. They were related to polishing, since it is rather difficult to avoid pulling the iron out of the weak and brittle lead telluride matrix. It proved best to follow a procedure where, after grinding to 600 grit on carborundum paper, a polish with 6 p diamond was used on nylon cloth. The Main Pass sulphur and oil deposit is located at Main Pass Block 299 in the Gulf of Mexico, 30 miles east of Venice, Louisiana, in 210 feet of water. The deposit was discovered by Freeport-McMoRan and its joint venture partners, IMC Fertilizer and Homestake Mining, in late 1988-early 1989. The sulphur deposit contains 67 million long tons of recoverable sulphur. The sulphur occurs in bio-epigenetic limestone replacing anhydrite caprock on top of a salt diapir. Recoverable reserves of 39.4 million barrels of oil and 9.1 billion cubic feet of gas are also contained in the limestone caprock and in supracap sandstone stringers.

THIS preliminary report from the Committee to Study Relations Between Students and the Institute is submitted to our member- ship for consideration and discussion before the general subject comes up for action at the Annual Meeting in February. At present, the A. I. M. E. has a dual relationship with mining students, each relationship in no may connected with the other. To the individual student the Institute offers for $2 a year a Student Associateship in the Institute which carries with it a subscription to MINING AND METAL- 'LURGY, a watch fob, and the privilege of becoming a Junior Member after graduation without payment of the -first year's dues, if one's application is accepted. To the student's college society it offers the privilege, upon application, of becoming 'an Affiliated 'Society, which brings with it no specific supervision or aid, and in turn requires no specific conditions as to membership, fees, or rules. This Affiliated Society is distinctly a school organization which Student Associateship in the Institute can he given special status or ignored, is the local .society sees fit.

Carlisle: Jim Knapp, has been the good friend of hundreds-maybe thousands-of mining men in these western states in the last 40 or 50 years. Jim is going to talk about many of the mining camps of Nevada, where he has done plenty in the mining field during the last 50 years. Jim, for a starter, how did you happen to go to Nevada? Knapp: In the summer of 1902, two years after the discovery at Tonopah, the professor of mining at Stanford sent out myself and another student by the name of Joe Miller to make a report on the camp. We left San Francisco at 8 p.m., got to Reno the next morning, then took the train to Sodaville, arriving about 4:30 in the afternoon. The first man I met when I arrived at the Tonopah station was Tasker Oddie, a gentleman who later became the Govenor of the State and then a United States Senator. Before we got away from the stage station I also met S. H. Brady, the first mining engineer to put out his shingle in Tonopah. He afterwards became general manager of the West End Mining Co.

Impact of small projectiles with velocities between 0.9 and 7.3 km per sec on basalt produce craters chiefly by the ejection of fragments. Weight-size distributions of the ejecta are linear for part of the size range of the fragments. Cumulative weight-size distributions of the ejecta from different craters vary because of erratic formation of large fragments and a large percentage of ejecta below 0.1 mm. In the range of velocities studied, the crater depth is approximately proportional to the 0.75 power of velocity of the projectile. This relationship may represent a transition regime between the fluid impact regime and the undeformed projectile impact regime. The volumes per unit of projectile energy of the craters produced are comparable to those reported for lower speed projectile impact and drill bits. An experimental investigation of projectile impact on rock is being conducted jointly by the Ames Research Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey. Projectiles are launched with light-gas guns at the Ballistics Range of the Ames Research Center. The craters and ejecta produced in these experiments are being studied by the U.S. Geological Survey. Steel, aluminum and polyethylene projectiles weighing from 0.25 to 0.015 g were accelerated to velocities of 0.88 km per sec (2,900 fps) to 7.3 km per sec (24,000 fps) with a light-gas gun, using hydrogen as the propellant medium. Projectiles impacted the targets normal to plane rock surfaces in an atmosphere of air with a nominal pressure of 25 to 50 mm of mercury. The metal projectiles were mounted in supporting four-piece nylon sabots, which guided the projectiles down the launching tube. After launch, aerodynamic drag acted to separate the sabots from the projectiles. Impact velocities were determined with time measurements and spark photographs of the projectiles in flight. Ejecta were collected in lucite and aluminum containers placed around the target block. A small hole in the containers permitted projectile entry. Impact of projectiles of the size employed produced craters in the rock targets chiefly by ejection of fragments. The craters are small, roughly conical depressions with crushed and intensely fractured rock at the bottoms of the depressions. The ejecta are composed of pieces of the projectile and rock fragments ranging in size from a few tenths of a micron or less to several centimeters in maximum dimension. In this paper, the structural features of the craters, the weight-size distributions of the recovered ejecta, and crater depth and crater volume relationships are described. White, "The Mining Town," Alta California, August 18,1873 Textbooks in mining engineering have traditionally covered ore reserve estimation and mine valuation in a single volume. Indeed, Examination and Valuation of Mineral Property by R. D. Parks (1957), having been the standard of the profession for over 20 years, is a classic example. However, the state of knowledge in these two fields has grown tremendously. Most mining engineering curricula now cover these topics in separate courses, and in practice, these tasks are usually performed by different individuals. Thus, this trend now suggests the need for separate, specialized publications rather than a single volume for both topics. Because of the separate development of the science of ore reserve estimation, it is important to state at the beginning what this chapter does not cover. It does not address in detail the design of sampling programs, sampling methods, or the processing of samples or sample data compilation. There are a number of suitable references available on these topics, including Peters (1978), Gy (1979), as well as the previously cited book by Parks. Furthermore, this chapter does not cover in any substantial detail either the traditional methods for using sample data to calculate ore reserves or the more recently developed geostatistical methods. The traditional methods are thoroughly covered by Popoff (1966) and more concisely by Barnes (1980). Among the more useful references for statistical applications in ore reserve estimation are Barnes (1980), David (1977), and Clark (1979). A thoughtful review of the entire science and art of ore reserve estimation is provided by King, McMahon, and Bujtor (1982). In spite of the fact that expansion of knowledge now calls for separate books on ore reserve estimation and financial evaluation, neither publication can ignore the important interrelationships between the two fields. In regard to this text, the unique and crucial role of ore reserves can not be omitted entirely; however, the field is now simply too extensive to treat here in any comprehensive manner.
