I. CONCEPT MARTA's Peachtree Center Station is being mined out of hard rock, directly beneath Atlanta's central business district, with minimal surface disruption during construction. Its cost is competitive with that of a conventional cut-and-cover alternative owing to its design concept, which utilizes the rock as a primary structural and architectural material. II. PLANNING The station was originally planned for cut-and-cover construction. However, Peachtree Street is unusually narrow for a main business street (generally 78 feet (24 m) between building lines) and cut-and-cover construction would therefore be very disruptive to surface traffic and severely restrict access to adjacent buildings, including Peachtree Center, Atlanta's showcase business/commercial complex. Cuprex Limited is currently developing a small gold mining operation in Central Australia in the Tennant Creek field. In February 1984, the company undertook a feasibility study on the project and operations commenced in August 1984. Ore reserves are located between 230 and 280 metres (755 ft and 919 ft) below surface and ore extraction required the establishment of a shaft network for access, ore hoisting and ventilation. Zeni Drilling Company from West Virginia, U.S.A. was contracted to blind drill two shafts for the project. Blind drilling was selected for various reasons, including timing which related to cost efficiency. The blind drill shaft technique has proved successful in this application and with enthusiastic and innovative support from the mining industry, will prove an efficient and cost effective means of accessing and operating underground mining projects of all sizes in the future.

There are many large rhodonite-bearing veins containing manganese in the Eureka-Animas Forks area of the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. The Sunnyside vein is the largest known vein in the area. As observed on the surface, the vein is mineralized over 8,000 feet and attains a maximum width of 200 feet. The average width of the vein and its branches and ramifications is 58 feet in the area that was mapped in detail. The weighted-average analysis of surface and underground samples from the northeastern extension of the Sunnyside vein is 8 percent manganese. Most other known veins in the area have a similar manganese content. The Hidden Treasure vein lies southeast of the Sunnyside-No Name-Mastadon vein. The weighted average of the analyses of surface and underground samples from this vein is 13 percent manganese. Exposures of the Scotia-Silver Chord vein are visible over a strike length of 4,000 feet on Treasure Mountain. Diamond-drill holes show that the vein contains 10 percent or more manganese to a depth of 400 feet. The vein has an average width of 28 feet. The Independence vein is exposed on the surface for a distance of 600 feet and has an average width of 6 feet. Three cut samples taken across the vein had an average content of 20.7 percent manganese. Sampling of the outcrops of eight veins in the Placer Gulch area also indicates manganese. Numerous other veins cropping out in the surrounding area are similar to the outcrop of the Sunnyside vein system mineralogically and are worth investigating.

"The VALMIN Code was developed and formally adopted by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) in 1995 and a revision was issued in 1998. The VALMIN Code applies to all relevant reports under the Australian Corporations Law, including submissions to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).The VALMIN Code and Guidelines sets standards for the preparation and commissioning of independent assessment and/or valuation reports on mineral and petroleum assets or mineral and petroleum securities.It is mandatory for AusllvI:M's members to follow this Code in these relevant circumstances and failure to do so will result in serious sanction of the member by the Ausllvllvfs Ethics Committee. Public support for the use of this Code has been given by regulators (ASX/ASIC) and market participants ( eg major accountancy firms). It is also endorsed as a guide to general best practice in project assessment and valuation.This paper will discuss how the VALMIN Code has worked in practice over the past few years. It will also examine areas where the Code could be improved and how it could form the basis of a new Canadian Code for mineral property valuation."

In the last decade or so, the importance of effective preventive maintenance controls and practices has taken on a new and accelerated emphasis. Advances in technology and changes in equipment and product designs impose more precise and demanding standards of quality, productivity and customer service at a very rapid pace. Daily, it is becoming more apparent that in order to fulfill current requirements, existing manufacturing practices and associated control programs must also be upgraded and expanded. This is particularly true in the field of maintenance services. As production and quality standards become more demanding, effective equipment maintenance takes on more importance and becomes more difficult to sustain. In modern plants, the failure of a single equipment component can shutdown a complete production line causing interruptions to operating and shipping schedules that result in costly downtime, dissatisfied customers, and reduced profits. These costly experiences can be minimized with an effective maintenance program that provides maximum equipment reliability and minimum downtime and readily adapts to revision and change. Today's competitive international commodity markets demand superior efficiency which requires systematic involvement of people in continual improvement of production and commercial processes. True Total Quality of Management (True TQM) principles provide an operating philosophy for maximising productivity and minimising unit costs of output. The pervasiveness of poor sampling practices in and around mineral processing plants could seem intriguing in view of the various documented evidences both for causes and consequences. To this extent, this paper revisits the well-documented but lesser-known fact that failure to care sufficiently about how samples are selected and managed is the mother source of almost all sampling biases. The authors believe that the potentially huge leverage between causes and consequences as well as the diversity of people involved in sampling call for a globally integrated solution rather than for a point solution. Such a globally integrated solution has already been put forward by the AMIRA P754 Metal accounting – code of practice and guidelines (AMIRA, 2007) that inherently requires accuracy to be targeted, measured, reported and managed. Furthermore, always in order to avoid a point solution, several layers of protection against biases must be put in place with each one involving a different ownership whenever possible. This is exactly the role intended by the supervisory bias detection method described in this publication. It is based on the continuous monitoring of the expected value of reduced residuals obtained from statistical data reconciliation conducted in a metal accounting context. This supervisory bias detection method is developed in full details after which Monte Carlo simulations are done on a mineral processing plant example for showing how it can be successfully applied for detecting hidden biases.CITATION:Lachance, L, Leroux, D, Gariépy, S and Flament, F, 2014. This study was designed to investigate roof falls in room-and-pillar drift coal mines and to determine geologic methods for predicting unstable roof conditions. The study area was located in Harlan County, Kentucky and the Bailey Creek (Harlan coal bed) and Highsplint (Darby coal bed) mines were selected for study. Correlations were made laterally between surface outcrops and within the mines using lithologic and trend analysis criteria. Lithologic criteria compared cyclic changes in roof strata. Results indicated that roof falls are associated with zones of weakness within or between five vertical cycles recognized. Abrupt lateral facies changes occur. In the Highsplint mine the roof was classified in four categories or conditions using 98 rib sections for control. Structure contour and isopach maps were used to project axial trends of the sandstone roof. A roof-fall zone was examined using ten NX cores taken from the roof and included lithologic, petrographic and clay mineral studies. At the Bailey Creek mine roof failure was caused by the heading direction being driven subparallel to paleochannel directions. Computer programs were used in trend analysis studies. Cross-bedding, paleo-channel trough axis and sole mark studies indicated a 350 discrepancy between surface and in-mine trough axes at Highsplint. A direct relationship between joint and "slip" frequency and direction with sandstone roll trends was found. Surface joints compared well with drainage Segments, hilt did not correlate with roof falls in areas of mines under overburden in excess of 600 feet.

WITH the large amount of metallurgical re- search work now being done and the constant effort of the engineer to effect economies of operation, I think it is a safe prediction that the next few years will see a great change in the handling of mine products. The well-managed mine, with sufficient ore reserves to warrant the necessary plants, will increasingly call upon the metallurgist and chemist for the solution of its problems. Shipping sorted ore or concentrate to the nearest smelter will not be the course followed. From ore to metal, or at least to a product directly salable to the consumer, will be the practice followed. As a consequence, mine managers will be increasingly interested in metal trade problems. By metal trade I mean the buying, selling, shipping, handling, and all the practices, forms and customs that go to make up the trade.

Abstract-Narrow veins are an important world-wide source of silver, tin, uranium and particularly gold. To potential financiers, this style of mineralization is viewed as high risk because of the often relatively small resource involved and high cost of estimation. In many cases diamond core drilling will not enable resource estimation beyond the inferred and indicated categories. Exploratory underground development is required to define measured resources. The definition of geological and grade continuity are major factors in narrow vein assessment. A measured resource must be based on strong geological and grade continuities. Narrow veins, generally less than 3 m wide, are complex geological phenomena, which commonly display unpredictable geometry and grade distribution. Variations in structural continuity, dip, strike, width, mineralogy and specific gravity are common. Veins may be composite, with ore-grade mineralization restricted to a specific structural domain. Branches, intersections and braided zones are common features. Potentially high-grade zones are often localized within ore shoots, which are surrounded by barren/low-grade regions. Resources must be determined as closely as possible to reality and reflect the distribution of the commodity in the rock. Estimation has three main requirements: (1) geological study to determine orebody nature; (2) estimation of tonnage and grade, and (3) the presentation of this information using a classification that is clear, unambiguous and bankable. Estimation methods employed are either classical or geostatistical; however, classical methods are often used because of the difficulties in applying geostatistics. Grades generally show a strong positively skewed distribution testifying the presence of high-grade values. Problems exist in the applicability of cutting outlier values risking over- or underestimation of grade. It is generally believed that where resource estimates are in error, poor geological control is usually the cause. Overestimation can lead to the closure of a mine through lost revenue and capital. An understated estimate can result in an opportunity missed for profit and/or greater economies of scale. Definition of reserves involves the consideration of economic and engineering data, to decide which part of the resource is economically mineable. Geology plays a similarly important role at this stage in the assessment of likely mining method, dilution, recovery etc. Throughout resource/reserve estimation, it is crucial that the amount and quality of the data and the geologist’s experience are relevant. The impact of geological understanding on estimation is often undervalued or assumed to be of lesser importance than finding grades and tonnages. This paper discusses the geology of narrow vein deposits and the importance of geology in their evaluation.

Prior to 1911 the literature on melting brass by electricity consisted entirely-save for some suggestions made in patent literature but not actually worked out-of a few observations by farseeing men ' on the theoretical advantages of melting brass and other nonferrous alloys in electric furnaces. Roeber was the first to see and clearly state the possible advantages of the electric furnace in brass melting. The same factors tha.t make it desirable to manufacture special steels in the electric furnace rather than in crucibles, he declared, apply to brass as well. He pointed out the possibility of using larger melting units, of eliminating crucible cost, of readily controlling the purity of the product. and of nearly eliminating the loss of zinc. "The replacement of the • old crucible process is sure to come," he said; "perhaps it will come in two years, but it will, necessarily, in ten years .... The inevitable advance along this industrial line will have great influence in the metal world and will also provide, in large cities, a new kind of load for the central station." The years 1905 to 1910 may be termed the purely theoretical period of the development of the electric brass furnace, though the Conley furnace was tried out e:xperimenta.lly about 1910 and a few heats were made in an induction furnace. 2 In December, 1911, the American Chemical Society held a symposium on mineral wastes, at which Bassett s discussed the zinc· losses that attend making brass in fuel-fired furnaces.

"Pressure oxidation (POX) leaching of copper (Cu) concentrates continues to be explored as the next generation of leaching processes to sustain existing Cu Solvent Extraction/Electrowinning (SX/EW) operations as easily leachable ores become scarcer. The leach liquors produced, particularly from total pressure oxidation, contain elevated concentrations of Cu and acid, making solvent extraction processing more challenging. Addressing this challenge will require innovative processing techniques and continuous improvement to be successful in achieving satisfactory physical and metallurgical performance in the SX plant. The ability to efficiently process these feeds via SX plays an important role in the continued success of POX technology. Characteristics of a concentrate leach pregnant leach solution (PLS) are discussed, along with best practices that should be considered for processing by SX. Findings discussed in this paper will shed light on ways to reduce process risk and bring additional improvement to the industry with minimal change to the SX plant. INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates continues to gain interest from the industry. Treatment by smelting and electro refining continues to dominate, accounting for ~80% of global copper production, but is faced with its own challenges. The case for increased hydrometallurgical processing has been discussed as high grade ore deposits are diminishing, capital costs for smelting are high, and the environmental aspects present challenges for sustainable practice. The hydromet copper industry is also turning a corner as easily leachable copper oxide deposits are depleting, and excess SX-EW capacity exists in certain regions. The transition to hydrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates will take a bit of effort as leaching of copper sulfides is difficult and byproduct credits must be considered. Various POX leaching processes have been studied and proposed to the industry as viable practices. Of the many processes, commercial use has been practiced with the Mount Gordon Copper Process, total and partial pressure oxidation by Freeport-McMoRan at their Bagdad and Morenci, Arizona complexes, the Sepon Copper Process in Laos, and the bioleach BIOCOP™ process in Chile. The experience related to the current paper centers around Cu concentrate leaching performed by Freeport McMoRan (known as CLP). The patented process was developed as an alternative to smelting and refining in 1998. The technology applies to both molybdenum and copper concentrates. Commercial CLP research and development began with Phelps Dodge in 1999 to 2001. The first commercial plant was commissioned in 2003 at the Bagdad operation. Initial operating conditions of the Bagdad CLP were under high temperature conditions before converting in 2005 to medium temperature conditions. In 2007-2009, the CLP technology was commissioned in Morenci, operating medium temperature and high temperature lite conditions until shutting down due to the economic downturn. The Morenci CLP restarted operation in April 2015 due to acid production benefits for the Morenci leach operations. Renewed solvent extraction test work initiated well before restart and has been an ongoing focus for further SX plant optimization."

ATHOUGH turquoise mining was, so far as we know, the first large, well-organized mining operation,' gem mining, from the Roman con-quest of Egypt until the opening of the South African pipe diamond mines some 50 years ago, was largely carried on' by individuals 01' small companies in a relatively primitive way. Now" however" gem mining does not yield in efficiency or in scale of operations to the mining of other mineral products. In 1926 the diamond mines of the world milled some 9,000,000 cu. yd. and produced 0,43 cu. yd. diamonds, a remarkable example of concentration. The Premier Diamond Mining Co. up to Oct. 31, 1927, had milled 116,455,550 loads (each of 16 cu. ft.) from which 26,-217,144 carats of diamonds" worth £29,897,971 2s, 9d., were recovered. The Burma Ruby Mines, Ltd., operating sever-al alluvial mines in Burma in 1911-12, mined and milled 1,479,845 truckloads of gemmiferous earth for 15c. per load. We of the industry can there-fore, with good grace, disclose some of the myths and also describe some of the primitive mining methods of the, dark ages of our industry. The methods, so far as I know, were not patented, and if they were, the patents have expired, so that engineers in other branches of the art are free to use them if they see fit.

This paper presents an overview of recent developments in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process to provide the background for a more detailed analysis of environmental and social constraints that the Heavy Mineral Mining industry has encountered over the past decade. Four cases studies are reviewed to provide a context for further analysis and identification of cross cutting environmental and social issues that either resulted in the projects not proceeding, or in the Australian case study, places existing operations under significant pressure from anti-mining lobbyists. The Xolobeni project, from the Eastern Cape in South Africa, is presented as the primary case study because it is recent, topical, and accessible; and raised numerous issues related to mining in a sensitive environment. A proposal to mine an area adjacent to the Okefenokee swamps in 1997 was also met with strong opposition from various environmental groups in Georgia, USA. This case study is briefly reviewed to further understand what ultimately resulted in the project not proceeding. Opposition to mining at North Stradbroke Island is reviewed to identify current issues more applicable to a developed country. A further review of a strategic assessment undertaken at Wavecrest, Eastern Cape, South Africa is provided in support of possible solutions to the challenges identified in the case studies. Important common themes were identified, including in some cases unfortunate timing of the environmental studies, but in all cases opposition was due to ecological sensitivity, landscape quality and sense of place. In one case study limitations to the EIA process included inadequate detail in the specialist investigations and insufficient information on mitigation. In all cases public participation was a limitation. It was either insufficient; flawed through possible bias; too ‘top down’ and required engagement with mobilised, motivated lobbyists. There was also insufficient investigation of social impacts, particularly amongst rural communities directly affected by a project. Generally alternatives were inadequately considered, a recognised limitation of project level EIA. It is concluded that the EIA process should be started as early as possible (at prefeasibility), and that investigations should be expanded from a typical fatal flaw assessment to one that applies methodologies used in strategic assessment. In particular, opportunities and constraints of the natural and social environment should be assessed in the context of the mining option as well as other options, to allow for a more meaningful assessment of alternatives. Public participation must form an important part of this initial study, despite the potential risks associated with public engagement at an early stage in the project. The application of the IFC Performance Standards; and expanding the scope of the EIA into an environmental, social and health impact assessment will lead to a more rigorous procedure, and result in more defensible products which could successfully unlock the key to the resources in these sensitive areas.

From March 1944 to July 1945 the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Federal Bureau of Mines made magnetometer surveys of some of the principal iron ore deposits of the Iron Springs district, Iron County, Utah. The district comprises a belt about 23 miles long and 3 miles wide. Most of the large ore bodies are found as pods of replacement ore within a favorable limestone bed lying at the margins of three separate igneous intrusions in the district The magnetic surveys were confined chiefly to this geologically favorable zone at the margins. The iron ore is a mixture of magnetite and hematite. The magnetite content of the ore ranges from 14 to 58 percent. Magnetic anomalies of 1,250 gammas or more were usually found over the near-surface ore bodies. About 62,000 magnetometer stations were taken over a total traverse distance of about 300 miles. Outcropping ore bodies were surveyed to determine, insofar as was possible from the magnetic data, their probable length, width, depth, extent, strike, dip, and tonnage. Geologically favorable areas where no ore is exposed were explored in an endeavor to find new ore bodies. Favorable locations were determined for exploratory diamond drilling, both in areas of exposed ore bodies and in areas of newly discovered magnetic anomalies. Forty-five separate magnetic anomalies that indicate the possible existence of ore bodies were observed. Of these, 13 anomalies are caused by outcropping ore bodies of proved commercial size. Five are caused by non-outcropping ore bodies of proved commercial size which were discovered, in whole or in part, as a result of the geophysical surveys. Of the remaining anomalies, which lie in virtually un-tested areas where few or no ore bodies are exposed, six probably are caused by large, unexposed replacement ore bodies, nine are possibly caused by large, unexposed replacement ore bodies, and six are probably caused by unexposed magnetite veins of some small commercial importance,

For the purpose of this paper I shall, in order to limit myself, define the words 'Maintenance' and 'Equipment' as follows: Maintenance shall mean the 'care of or 'the sustaining of equipment in as nearly perfect condition as possible. Equipment shall mean any item of a mechanical nature entering into the production of coal; it will be seen that unless one limits the use of this word it could take in administration as well as operative equipment, and include metal mines, mills and smelters, and manufacturing plants. In any industry the first consideration is the proper operation of all units entering into the production of the article manufactured or produced. I wish to quote here what a man, well known internationally in financial circles, told his operators at the time a large expansion programme was under consideration. His exact words were: "I do not care how much it is going to cost. What I want to know is how much it is going to cost to operate and maintain. It is the continuous drain for repairs that costs us the most money." The truth of this statement has been proved time and again, and many companies have found the cost of maintenance to be the balance between profit and loss-so much so that, in two instances with which the writer is familiar, the mechanical equipment was practically replaced throughout. I bring this point out here to emphasize the value and necessity of keeping abreast of the times, and obtaining maximum efficiency with the minimum outlay. Time is indeed money where delays occur due to defective or poorly kept equipment, and it is absolutely necessary to prevent machinery from becoming defective or inefficient.

"Ecstall Mining Limited was formed to operate the Kidd Creek mine, discovered by Texasgulf Incorporated in 1961 the orebody is geologically very complex, containing rich values of zinc, copper, silver and lead. The first phase of the operation involved an open pit, railroad and concentrator complex, which was under construction in 1965 and began operations in late 1966. The open pit, with rim dimensions of 2,000 by 1,000 feet, was computer-designed and highlights excellent wall control and efficient ore extraction and grade control. The railroad was built over the worst type of muskeg country, but it has been well maintained, resulting in an uninterrupted supply of ore in the trains. The 10,000-tpd concentrator, located 17 miles from the mine, is highly instrumented and automated. It features computer control of reagents and, in addition to the copper, zinc and lead flotation circuits, has a modern gravity tin plant. The concentrator is large, because very fine grinding is required for good metallurgy and nearly 2,500 tons per day of concentrates are produced. In 1969, work was started on the underground mine to take over from the open pit; it began partial production in mid-1973. The mine is highly instrumented, has a ramp from surface, a high-production shaft, an underground gyratory crusher and an efficient orehandling system, and employs the latest mining techniques. The electrolytic zine plant, rated at 120,000 tons of slab zinc per year, started operation in April, 1972, with batch leaching and purification circuits. It has been converted to continuous leaching and is now in the process of converting to continuous purification. Further modernization and automation will be carried out in the next few years. Five service departments support the five operating departments. These are maintenance, engineering and technical services, geology, administration and employee relations. How these ten departments function and work together using the most advanced technology to produce an efficient operation is the main theme of the Ecstall Story."

Coal bump is a sudden manifestation of the release of strain energy stored in a coal pillar (Peng, 2008). It is a very serious mining hazard that adversely affects the safety and productivity of the mines. Several case histories in mining have described coal pillars or faces of coal failing violently with an accompanying ejection of debris and broken material into the working areas of the mine (Campoli, 1987; Osterwald, 1962; Peperakis, 1958; Garvey and Ozbay, 2013). These failures resulted in large losses of life and total collapses of entire mine panels (Chase, Zipf, and Mark, 1994; Zingano, Koppe, and Costa, 2004). There are questions in the literature about whether or not the coal itself plays a significant role in bump. Rice (1935) mentioned that structurally strong coal is one of the key factors for bump; however, the strength of the Pocahontas #3 coal seam is low, and it bumped. Moreover, it is not obvious in the literature whether the strength of the tested coal samples is the inherent strength or if it is influenced by the shape or the size of the specimen. The main objective of this paper is to answer the following question: To what extent does the mechanical properties of the coal have an impact on the potential for violent failure? The best approach to answer this question is to compare the mechanical properties of two kinds of coals from bump-prone (Utah coal-Sunnyside seam) and non-bump-prone (WV coal-Sewickley seam). This comparison includes uniaxial compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, shear strength (cohesion and friction angle), and the burst index.
