"Geometallurgy is now recognised within the mining industry as an approach that can both maximise value and reduce the risks associated with resource development. The process of spatial ore variability testing for metallurgical response and the use of quick, inexpensive metallurgical proxies has been well developed in the past decade in industry and the literature, and via various collaborative research programs and laboratories. Technology continues to advance with new techniques such as hand-held analytical tools and automated hyperspectral core scanning, allowing for even faster, less expensive in situ geometallurgical testing.In the current mining industry downturn, a critical frontier of geometallurgy is in its application in short-term geological modelling (ore control) and mine planning, and the associated decision-making. This is the end game at which the hard-won knowledge of orebody variability can be exploited to add near-term value. In order for spatial block models to be fit-for-purpose for such tactical uses, they must be populated with key geometallurgical information and then have workflows that use this richer model as a basis of material allocation to destinations so that the true value of the resource is realised.We envision geometallurgy (geomet) programs designed to add and sustain value at two levels:‘Strategic geomet’ has a long-term strategic focus that actively uses all relevant data that helps predict processing performance such as bench-scale metallurgical tests, mineralogy, geochemistry, ore texture etc (‘the geometallurgical database’) to model spatial ore variability and metallurgical response throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). This will enable better resource definition, more optimal mine planning and scheduling, improved process design and sustaining capital strategy over the LOM. The value-realisation is gained by basing all these strategic decisions on spatial models that better reflect the actual value of blocks (or aggregates of blocks) in the model.‘Tactical geomet’ has a short- to medium-term tactical focus that, again, actively uses the geometallurgical database, but also includes new data derived during ore control activities (such as drilling and sampling) to inform allocation-to-destination decisions via the ore control process. This will enable improved efficiency (ie less error) in allocation of mining blocks as direct feed, stockpile or waste. Importantly, this efficiency will be measured in terms of value and not grade, which is an incomplete – and typically biased – proxy for value. The key benefit is that ore control will then be planned and executed on the basis of realised value.We therefore propose a twofold systematic and holistic, value-based geometallurgical process. This process needs to be planned and implemented in an integrated manner, noting that strategic and tactical geometallurgy can be worked on by the same professionals, sharing data, methodologies and potentially models. ILZRO sights are locked securely on the targets of the expanded applications and ever-improving quality in the major market for zinc-coated steel. A wide range of ILZRO-sponsored research projects examine issues of formability, paintability, and corrosion resistance for traditional hot-dip galvanising, electrogalvanising, and ILZRO's own proprietary zinc coating, Galfan. Recent research has focussed on the on the interaction between Galfan and different substrate steels to determine optimum combinations for different applications. ILZRO enjoys an evolving role in providing the connection between research laboratories and marketing divisions through supporting research and services for the Galfan Technical Resource Centreò(GTRC) and the recently formed North American Galfan Development Authority (NAGDA). GTRC has just produced a new problem-solving manual that provides a comprehensive source of hands-on solutions for the many Galfan licensees throughout the world, and should contribute substantially to the reputation of Galfan as a consistently top-quality steel-coating product. Meanwhile, NAGDA is advancing the market with new advertising for Galfan based on superior corrosion-resistant qualities proven through ILZRO-sponsored research. Practical manufacturing issues remain at the forefront of ILZRO priorities, with research emphasis on cutting and welding zinc-coated steel to provide direct assistance towards improved product quality and a more secure market. Moving to the arena of die casting, when the specifier looks to zinc to fill a design need, ILZRO-sponsored research projects provide comprehensive documentation on metallurgical characteristics for every zinc alloy under almost any imaginable application. On-going ILZRO-sponsored research is integrating this wealth of data with sophisticated computer programs that model die-casting designs with ever-increasing accuracy, as other ILZRO projects lay the market groundwork for zinc in applications ranging from vibration damping to electromagnetic shielding.

A study of the hydrometallurgy and electrowinning of cobalt from various domestic ores has been in progress at the Boulder City, Nevada, Experiment Station since February 1940. Previous reports covering certain phases of this investigation have been published. This report covers the research and pilot-plant work on the production of cobalt metal from cobalt-copper ores from the initial experimental work on crude ore through continuous operation. The ore types were from the Blackbird District, Lemhi County, Idaho. The initial tests were made with concentrated ore which was received by air mail and these experiments were expanded both in size and scope. After the laboratory was continued, improved, and extended tests were reported. Sufficiently advanced, a continuously operated plant producing 250 pounds of electrolytic cobalt per day was operated from June 15 through July 15, 1944.

The following notes deal chiefly with changes from steam to electric drives, or, in the case of the Bellevue pumps, from air to electric. Where electric power can be purchased or generated cheaply it can be used to advantage and is generally more economical than steam, especially in places remote from the central power-plant. Nothing could be more simple than the operation of electrical gear. It does not require a competent engineer constantly on the alert, oiling and watching bearings, and maintenance is at a minimum. The ease with which the current is transmitted from its source to where it must do its work is one of its greatest advantages. Transmission losses are very low. Generally speaking, the smaller the plant the lower the loss and 90 per cent, and better, efficiency is easily attained. In and around Bellevue 2300-volt, three-phase, is the standard distributing pressure; our power requirements and the distances transmitted, for the present, do not require more than this. Most of the heavier motors are 2300-volt .machines, which eliminates the cost and possible troubles of step-down transformers, and makes for a cheaper and less bulky motor. This applies to two fan, two hoist, and two compressor motors, the smallest being 75 and the largest 520 horse power. The standard pressure on power lines to all inside pumps is 550 volts, and 220 volts is general for the the tipple. While 110 volts is used for house and office lighting service, it is not economical around and in the mine. No matter what kind of device is used to lock and protect the lamps, they are invariably missing.

The effective utilization of resources and process optimization play a crucial role in the sustaining and growth of overall businesses. This principle holds true in the mining sector, where particular attention is required during the comminution steps. This necessity arises from the fact that mining operations often consume substantial amounts of energy in mineral processing. Therefore, it becomes imperative to thoroughly study the integration of comminution steps. In many instances, an approach to be studied is the operation commencing with the drill and blast phase and culminating in the grinding product process. Nevertheless, establishing an optimal integration between drill and blast operations and the grinding phase is a complex undertaking due to the direct influence of rock characteristics on this process. And in many cases, the complexity and variability of such physical characteristics makes mining operations to ignore such influence. Consequently, Enaex Mining Technical Solutions (EMTS), in collaboration with Lundin Mining's Chapada Mine engineering team, and with the assistance of Hatch Consulting and Technology, has undertaken a comprehensive study aimed at enhancing mill throughput at the Chapada operation. The basis of this study lies in characterizing the rock masses present in the Chapada Mine to gain a deep understanding of the material that needs to be comminuted. Subsequently, the mineral processing team determined the most suitable size distribution for the Run-of-Mine (ROM) material. With this information, the drilling and blasting team built a site-specific blast fragmentation model, able to simulate various blast design scenarios. This approach enabled to optimize the utilization of available drilling and blasting resources while striving to achieve the optimum ROM characteristics. Since 2021, the Mine to Mill methodology has been progressively implemented at the Chapada Mine. As a result, the blasting engineering team now utilizes the blast plans generated by the fragmentation model simulations as a foundation for designing blast plans that align with the operational and financial capacities of the mine. Overall, it was predicted that this implementation could lead to an average increase in mill throughput of 13-22 % depending on blend feed, once all recommendations are implemented. Even with partial implementation, plant results demonstrate a 5 % increase compared to the period before the Mineto-Mill project, without any coarsening of the associated grinding product size.

THE Tri-State field is now believed to be the largest zinc district in the world. It has a potential production sufficient to supply the entire zinc demands of the country. It is estimated that a train 70 miles long would be required to haul the district's 1919 output of 60 per cent. zinc concentrates. For many years,, including 1917, Missouri surpassed Oklahoma in zinc production. In 1918, however, Oklahoma led by a wide margin and, in 1919, Missouri produced less than one-sixth of the total for the three states, when Kansas replaced Missouri in second place in the production. The district is now producing one-third of the zinc of the world and twice as much as ever before at the present price.

Mining can make two major contributions to the cleanup of the environment. The first of these is the extractive technology that has become highly developed as a result of centuries of development. Of equal impor­tance are the methodology of analysis and the development of engineering solutions that are the stock in trade of the mining industry. Despite the differences between the industries, the processes for the development of a mine and the cleanup of a hazardous waste site are similar. The characteristics that impact the ability to develop a suitable process for treating an ore body or correct­ing an environmental problem are those relat­ed to the distribution of the contaminant or metal in the host material.

Given the recent focus on powered haulage incidents within the US mining sector, an appraisal of collision avoidance/warning systems (CXSs) through the lens of the available research literature is timely. This paper describes a rapid review that identifies, characterizes, and classifies the research literature to evaluate the maturity of CXS technology through the application of a Technology Readiness Assessment. Systematic search methods were applied to three electronic databases, and relevant articles were identified through the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sixty-four articles from 2000 to 2020 met these criteria and were categorized into seven CXS technology categories. Review and assessment of the articles indicates that much of the literature-based evidence for CXS technology lies within lower levels of maturity (i.e., components and prototypes tested under laboratory conditions and in relevant environments). However, less evidence exists for CXS technology at higher levels of maturity (i.e., complete systems evaluated within operational environments) despite the existence of commercial products in the marketplace. This lack of evidence at higher maturity levels within the scientific literature highlights the need for systematic peer-reviewed research to evaluate the performance of CXS technologies and demonstrate the efficacy of prototypes or commercial products, which could be fostered by more collaboration between academia, research institutions, manufacturers, and mining companies. Additionally, results of the review reveal that most of the literature relevant to CXS technologies is focused on vehicle-to-vehicle interactions. However, this contrasts with haul truck fatal accident statistics that indicate that most haul truck fatal accidents are due to vehicle-to-environment interactions (e.g., traveling through a berm). Lastly, the relatively small amount of literature and segmented nature of the included studies suggests that there is a need for incremental progress or more stepwise research that would facilitate the improvement of CXS technologies over time. This progression over time could be achieved through continued long-term interest and support for CXS technology research.

INASMUCH as galena and sphalerite flotation concentrates are being produced that contain over 95 per cent galena or sphalerite, it is not unreasonable to believe that a flotation concentrate assaying at least 80 per cent of native gold can he secured provided the gold is free. As yet, little if any fundamental information has been published concerning the flotation of free gold either alone or in the presence of sulfides. So far, we are unable to make as complete a separation of gold from sulfide minerals by flotation as is possible in, the separation of one sulfide from another by this method. An introductory study of the flotation of several free gold ores has been made in our Utah laboratories. For this study three general types of gold ores were chosen, namely: (1) Quartzite containing 0.26 oz. gold per ton in which no base metals are present; (2) sulfide ore (2.04 oz. Au; 1.31 oz. AO containing pyrite as the only sulfide present and the gold free; and (3) oxidized ore (1.10 oz. Au; 0.70 oz. Ag) from an oxidized zone of the vein from which sulfide ore (No. 2) was taken; little sulfide iron was present.

Ix the summer of 1842 my father, William Firmstone, was engaged by Charles Jackson, Jr., of Boston, to examine the conditions in the Lehigh valley as a site for blast-furnaces using anthracite for fuel. In consequence of his report, he was further engaged by Mr. Jackson to build a furnace for him and his partners on the Lehigh canal, 2 miles above the mouth of the river at Easton. Work was begun in the fall of 1842, and the first furnace blown-in in 1844. The history of the works, therefore, from 1844 to 1887, when my own connection with them ceased, covers only four years less than the whole period of the rise, culmination, and commencement of the decline in the smelting of iron with anthracite in America, the beginning of which, in a commercial sense, may be put in 1839.' Although this paper, as the title indicates, is concerned almost exclusively with the furnaces at Glendon, still what was done there was more or less influenced by current opinion in the dis¬trict, and even reflects, to some extent, the changes in opinion and practice with mineral fuel the world over. No. 1 Furnace was built of red brick, on four piers, had three tuyeres and fore-hearth and tymp, as was universal with furnaces using mineral fuel until the introduction of Liirmann's cinder-tuyere. The dimensions and profile are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The first hearth (Fig. 1) was of sandstone; all after were of fire-brick (Fig. 2). The profile was no doubt derived directly from Gibbons's furnace,2 for it appears from W. Firmstone's note-books that in October, 1840, he visited ." Discussion of the laws bearing upon the economics of mining in this province at once resolves itself under three headings: (a) The rights and obligations of holders of mineral bearing lands; (b) Taxation of mines; (c) Regulation of methods adopted in financing mining operations. Titles: The law relating to titles is contained in the Mineral Act, Placer Mining Act and Coal Mines Prospecting Act. Origin: Mining laws in force in this province and elsewhere on the continent had their origin in the rule-of-thumb regulations adopted by prospectors themselves, when, far from the centres of civilization and the seats of the courts of justice, they found it necessary, for mutual protection, to fix the conditions of possession by right of location, and to prescribe the duties to be performed in order to enable the individual to maintain his ground against all comers. These regulations have been codified and added to by legislatures, until we find adequate protection and safeguard to property in the laws of this province.

In the year 1948, more than ever before, the coal industry established itself on the threshold of a new and exciting future expansion. While production did not equal the wartime and peacetime peaks of 1944 and 1947, it was, in review, a good coal year. During the latter part of the year a combination of mild weather, record stock piling, and general business slackening reduced coal demand to the extent that marginal mines suspended operations, while mines remaining active found it necessary to renew their attention to producing better products at lower operating costs.

Good afternoon gentlemen. To begin, may I say ?thank you? to the AIME for the invitation to be here today to talk about my company's experience with shovel, truck, pocket, to car loading. The other author of this paper is here today. (Introduce John Sweet). Before we get to the details of this paper I want to tell you a little about Erie Mining Company. Erie Mining Company is located on the east end of the Mesabi Range in northern Minnesota and is engaged in the business of processing taconite rock into iron ore pellets. In 1970, the twelfth year of production, Erie will produce its rated capacity of 10.3 million tons of high grade iron ore pellets. The plant is the first of five iron ore pelletizing operations managed by Pickands Mather & Co. with a combined annual production capacity of 21 million tons. This plant began producing high grade iron ore pellets in 1957 placing it among the earliest of taconite production facilities in North America. Historically Pickands Mather & Co. had been a leading natural ore mine managing firm in the Great Lakes region for more than 70 years. Pickands Mather & Co. moved into the new field of taconite mining and processing with management and operational experience from the open pits and underground mines. We were to learn much of volume taconite handling requiring new equipment and new procedures. A trial and error period through the early years of taconite processing developed through the operation of an experimental sized preliminary plant near the present Erie Mining Company site.

Driving sustainability concepts and practices into the heart of the design process is the key to achieving a successful, sustainable plant design. Engineering design practices, tools, systems and methodologies should be prepared around true eco-efficiency parameters, adopt wholesystems-thinking and consider life-cycle impacts for the design task. Experience dictates that the application of sustainable plant design practices is most likely to succeed if: The principles are well documented and explained. All stakeholders agree on what sustainability means. Sustainable plant design is treated as a core process. The principals of sustainable plant design are equally applicable in brownfield and Greenfield environments. Although brownfield situations provide the designer with less latitude for change, these types of projects do allow easier measurement and demonstration of relative impacts. This paper further develops the above points by drawing on case studies from HatchÆs repertoire.

Solution mining projects are conducted through one or more boreholes which penetrate en ore body. Proper drilling, completion and maintenance of the boreholes, therefore, is essential to the success of any solution mining operation. Wells drilled for solution mining encounter problems quite similar to problems encountered by the petroleum industry in drilling, completing and maintaining wells for the production of oil, gas or water. Many of the services developed and much of the experience gained by the petroleum industry is applicable to solution mining wells. As in the petroleum industry, each individual wellbore and ore body in a solution mining project provides its own problems. These vary greatly from well to well, and it is not possible to set down data or outline programs that will apply to all wells. Instead, the design of the drilling, completion, production and maintenance programs should be worked out for each individual well. The purpose of this paper, then, is to generally describe materials, equipment and techniques available for these programs and to discuss the purpose and sequence of their use.

THE arrangement of a flow of cyanide-pulp through Pachuca tanks in agitation, so as to permit a continuous process, instead of alternate filling, agitation, and emptying, has been proposed by various writers within the last two years, and more particularly by A. T. Grothe, agent for the Brown patents on Pachuca tanks in Mexico. It was first put into practice, I believe, by M. H. Kuryla at the Esperanza mine in El Oro, Mexico. The starting of agitation in Pachuca tanks after filling may offer no serious difficulties with ores which do not settle rapidly in such tall tanks; and the adaptation of the tanks to continuous agitation under such conditions may give simply a somewhat more convenient method of treatment and greater agitation-capacity for a given number of tanks, because of the saving -of time lost in filling and discharging. But in the treatment .of pulp which tends to settle rapidly, as in the cyaniding of concentrates or of the whole pulp of ores containing heavy sulphides, the packing of the slime at the bottom may, cause much trouble. The use of the radial air-pipe attachments near the top of the cone and of the air-valve outside of the air-lift .tube at the bottom may obviate the difficulty to some extent; but the action of the radial air-pipes on the cone-sides is that -of a sand-blast, and their continuous use cuts through the tanks. Moreover, even when these pipes are used, some pulps will pack tightly below them in the cones. Under such conditions the use of Pachuca tanks with intermittent filling and discharging becomes a troublesome process. Time is lost in ,starting agitation; large quantities of compressed air are wasted; pulp is blown over the tank-tops; and not infrequently it may be necessary to dig out the bottoms of tanks by hand. This trouble is the only important one occurring in the use of Pachuca tanks; and, since it is caused by intermittent filling, the .arrangement of a continuous flow of pulp from tank to tank,

Community expectations, investor pressures, regulatory obligations, and environmental oversight create a uniquely complex communications environment. In recent years, technological change, climate urgency, and geopolitics have reshaped how the industry communicates its role and value. The rise of artificial intelligence in the information ecosystem represents yet another fundamental shift. As AI evolves, an organization’s reputation will no longer be shaped solely through human interactions, media coverage, social activity, or corporate disclosure. Increasingly, public understanding depends on how AI systems interpret and represent company information. These systems influence search results, conversational tools, news aggregation, social discourse, and even investor intelligence platforms. As AI-generated summaries, answers, and narratives become the default interface for stakeholders, they also become authoritative in shaping trust. For mining companies, this creates both risk and opportunity. The organizations that recognize how AI reads, prioritizes, and amplifies information will be better positioned to build trust. Those that remain silent or rely on traditional communication methods may find their reputations being algorithmically defined without their participation. This paper explores how mining companies can proactively engineer their reputations in the age of AI.

"The Abitibi volcano-plutonic belt forms the major portion of the Abitibi lithotectonic subprovince in the Superior Province. The Abitibi belt is composed essentially of"" (1) approximately 2.7 Ga old volcanic and sedimentary rocks; and (2) gabbro, tonalite, granodiorite and syenite intrusions occurring in well-defined prekinematic ( synvolcanic ), synkinematic and post-kinematic plutonic suites. Most of these rocks are metamorphosed to greenschist facies. Regional multi-phase deformation affects the volcano-sedimentary rocks. Deformation was initiated as these rocks were formed, and peaked at the end of the Keno ran orogeny with the emplacement of granitic batholiths.There are 145 former and current mines in the Quebec segment of the belt. To date, more than 420 Mt of ore have been extracted yielding 1,600 tonnesof Au, more than4,000 tonnesof Ag,4,400,000 tonnes of Cu and 5,300,000 tonnes of Zn. Mineral production is concentrated in geologic domains that approximately coincide with the boundaries of lithotectonic domains. We have compared the geology and mineral deposits of different domains to illustrate their distinct metallogenic signature. Certain domains are dominantly gold-producing (Cadillac-Malartic, Val-d'Or, Caopatina), others are base-metal producers (Matagami and Normetal), while others produce both gold and base metals ( Rouyn-Noranda, Chibougamau, Casa-Berardi-Joutel).Gold is extracted from quartz-rich vein deposits (for example, Val-d' Or), sulfide-rich veindeposits(Cadillac or Chibougamau) and from volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits ( Rouyn-Noranda). Base metals are generally mined from volcanogenic massive sulfide( RouynNoranda, Matagami, Normetal), although certain vein deposits yield base metals (Chibougamau) . Certain sectors are dominantly zincrich (Matagami, Normetal)."

This paper is prepared the United States Bureau of Mines and is descriptive of methods, practice, and costs at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines, Ltd., Schumacher, Ontario. The property is located in the Pearl Lake section of the Porcupine mining district. It is reached by a branch line of the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario Railway from Porquois Junction. There is also a good motor road into the district. The Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines and the Coniaurum Mines, Ltd., are adjacent properties. Power for both the mining and the pulp and paper industries in the district is supplied by an extensive development of the water-power resources. Weather conditions are favorable for mining operations.
