"Study of gravity concentrates from the gold-recovery circuit of the Kambalda nickel mill has enabled an assessment to be made of the nature, relative abundance and compositional variability of platinum group element (PGE) minerals and other associated heavy minerals that are present in the Kambalda nickel deposits. The major platinum minerals are sperrylite, PtAs2, and nioncheite, (Pt. Pd, Ni)(Te, Bi)2, and the major palladium minerals are sudburvite, (Pd, Pt, Ni)(Sb, Te, Bi), stibiopalladinite, Pd6Sb2, and palladoarsenide, Pd2 (As, Sb), together with a palladium antimonide and a palladium arsenide that have not been fully characterized. Palladian melonites, which contain up to 10 wt% Pd, and palladian nickeline are also important PGE hosts. Sperrylite and sudburyite are by far the most abundant discrete minerals in the gravity concentrates.Gold occurs as argentian, cuprian and nickeloan—cuprian gold, and as the tellurides calaverite, petzite and auriferous hessite. Silver is present in petzite, hessite and volynskite. Other rare phases contained in the gravity concentrates include native bismuth, altaite, frohbergite, breithauptite, gersdorffite, parkerite, scheelite, tantalite, cassiterite, rutile, bunsenite, gahnite, barite and uvarovite.Descriptions of in-situ occurrences of PGE minerals at Kambalda are rare. Michenerite, PdBiTe, and testibiopalladite, PdSbTe, have been described from a telluride-rich quartz-carbonate vein that intersects massive sulphide ore in Lunnon Shoot. Moncheite has been observed in chalcopyrite-rich stringers, and sudburyite occurs as inclusions in nickeline in a quartz- carbonate veinlet. No discrete PGE minerals have been found within the massive and matrix ore zones in the Kambalda ore- shoots, and the geochemical distribution of PGE suggests that the formation of discrete PGE phases may be related to post- magmatic processes—in particular, metamorphic segregation of sulphides, and the interaction of the ore sulphides, containing PGE in solid solution, with younger hydrothermal fluids. This has led to local redistribution of the PGE, with concentration in footwall stringers and veins, and in reaction zones."

In the course of a series of measurements of the rate of diffusion of carbon in austenite at about 960°C. (1760°F.) and III0°C. (2030°F.), it became necessary to determine carbon concentration when austenite is saturated with graphite, because of indications that the hitherto accepted value of the solubility of graphite in this temperature range is too low. Specimens of carbonyl iron were saturated at temperature in a hydrogen-toluene atmosphere which was in equilibrium with graphite. The carbon conteDt of the steel was measured either by combustion or by the loss of weight after substantially complete decarburization in an atmosphere of hydrogen saturated at room temperature with water vapor. The absence of carbide or graphite as a phase at temperature was demonstrated by microscopic examination of saturated specimens that had been drastically quenched, The mean result of concordant ments-—taeats-is-^that gamma iron saturated with respect to graphite contains 1.39 per cent carbon at 957°C .(i755°F.) and 1.89 per cent at III0°C. (2030°F.). These two values, plotted along with what appears from the literature to be the best value (0.69 per cent) at the iron-graphite eutec-toid temperature (738°C. or I360°F.), yield a curve that is almost linear, and which, continued upward through a short interval, leads to a limiting solubility of 1.98 per cent at the iron-graphite eutectic temperature II35°C. (2075°F.) instead of the commonly accepted value of about 1.7 per cent. Experimental Procedure The samples of carbonyl iron, with the exception of those for microscopic examination, were cylinders 3.8 cm. long, 0.475 cm. in diameter. They were placed in a graphite holder and suspended in a vertical furnace, the temperature of which was controlled precisely by means of the resistance of the platinum winding.' In the empty furnace the range of temperature over a distance of 4 cm. at the heat center was 9°C. (I6°F.) but at a given location the temperature remained within +o.5°C. (o.9°F.); it was measured by inserting a platinum-rhodium couple calibrated at the melting point of palladium, 1555°C. Since the presence of the sample probably improved the uniformity of temperature, it was decided to consider the average temperature of the sample to be 3°C. lower than the maximum measured in the empty furnace with the same setting of the controller. Data were obtained in the vicinity of two temperatures, 960°C. (I760°F.) and III0°C. (2030°F.). The samples for microscopic examination, 2.2 cm. long, 0.475 cm. in diameter, were suspended individually on pure iron wire; for these no temperature correction was applied. The record of safety in the use of permissible explosives in United States coal mines has been excellent, due in great measure to the persistence with which research has been carried on in the Bureau of Mines, to the development of permissible explosives, and to the cooperation of mine operators and workers in using permissibles in a recommended manner and in the effective though gradual replacement of black powder and other nonpermissibles. The demand for increased rate of coal production, changes in mining conditions and minim methods, and introduction of new mining machinery have resulted in modified or new blasting practices. To keep abreast of these developments the Bureau of Mines conducts investigations under actual mining conditions at the Experimental coal mine near Pittsburgh, Pa. Several years ago an extensive study was complete to determine conditions under which the allowable charge limit for permissible explosives per shot hole might be raised from 1.5 to 3 pounds without undue risk of gas or coal-dust ignitions. As a result of the study, this increase in the charge limit was authorized under certain specified conditions in 1948,5/ greatly facilitating production schedules.

The Tetreault mine, operated by the British Metal Corporation (Canada), Limited, holds a unique position in Canadian mining, being the only steady producer of zinc in Canada east of the Rocky mountains. Its importance in Canadian zinc production may be gauged with some accuracy, since, in 1927, it was responsible for over 13 per cent of the zinc output of the Dominion. In addition, it also made valuable contributions to the production of lead, silver, and gold. Location: Situated in the foothills of the Laurentian mountains, 600 feet above sea level, 20 miles from the St. Lawrence river, and 52 miles due west from the city of Quebec, the property is in the township of Montauban, county Portneuf, Province of Quebec, as shown in Figure I. The municipality of Montauban, immediately adjoining the mine, has a permanent population of 700 people and is six miles by road from Notre Dame station on the main line of the C.N. Rys. between Montreal and Chicoutimi-Notre Dame being n6 miles by rail from Montreal. Connection by 19 miles of dirt-and-gravel road with the Provincial highways' system of Quebec Province, the city of Quebec, which is distant 78 miles, can be reached by automobile in less than three hours, while the distance to Montreal by road is 16o miles .

Sutter Gold Venture excavated an exploration decline into a mineralized zone in the Sutter Creek gold mining district. Delays in obtaining the conditional-use permit resulted in 7 to 10 million gallons of water accumulation in the decline containing elevated dissolved arsenic. Sutter received a permit to land apply the water after reducing the arsenic concentration to 0.05 mg/L. Initially the water was treated by co- precipitation arsenic with ferric hydroxide. Operational difficulties of this treatment system resulted in Sutter pursuing alternative treatment methods. The activated alumina adsorpting was selected due to its flexibility and ease of operation. Operating and maintenance data and costs will be presented.

Investigation or analysis of a process or system has as references the measurements of the variables. These measurements are presented normally in form of data. These data are measured in intervals over time. The aim with measurement of the data in a process is to obtain information about the state of it in order to have it under control. Other goal is to know how the results are affected by the process variables to improve upon product quality, redunding manufacturing cost, better pollution control etc.

In principle, productiorl of salt from sea water is a simple operation. The sun and wind cause evaporation of sea water trapped in ponds, and what is left is principally salt. Commercial production, however, requires consideration of many factors. First is a high consistent annual rate of evaporation, as well as large areas of suitable low-lying ground close to economical shipping facilities. The south end of San Francisco Bay has these requisites. Large ponds are built, by using clamshell dredges to build up levees to a height of approximately 3 ft. on ground usually lower than sea level, so that the water may be taken in through tide gates without pumping. Ponds are divided into extremely large concentrating ponds and smeller crystallizing ponds. Approximately ten times more area is required for concentrating than for crystallizing. The concentrating ponds are irregular in shape and size but the crystallizing ponds are rectangular and fairly regular in size, to aid in harvesting. The ocean water is taken into the first of a series of concentrating ponds and gradually moved forward from pond to pond as it increase:: in density, reaehing the crystallizing area as a saturated brine. This brine is pumped into the crystallizer at the beginning of the net evaporating season, usually in May, and further evaporation causes its sodium chloride content to deposit on the bottoms of the ponds. The brine must be drawn off and a fresh supply added from time to time to prevent other undesirable salts from depositing with the sodium chloride. Harvesting usually begins near the end of August and now is accomplished almost entirely by mechanical means. After harvesting, the salt is stored in large sbockpiles until required for shipping or refining. The greatest amount is used for industrial purposes and is shipped without any processing other than screening, but all salt for domestic use produced by the Leslie Salt Co. is refined by the racuum process, giving a produet consistently testing over 09.9 per cent sodium chloride.

"TREVIICOS CorporationINTRODUCTIONThe Walter F. George lock and dam was constructed on the Chattahoochee River between 1955 and 1963 with the double function of improving navigation and generating power. Its 82 ft. by 450 ft. (25m x 137m) lock can accommodate large barge traffic and its four generating units with a plant capacity of 150 MW have an average energy output of 453,000 MWH. The dam consists of a 1,496 ft. (456m) long concrete structure housing the spillway, a non overflow portion, the power units and two earthen wing dams extending to the Georgia and Alabama sides, respectively 5,810 feet and 6,130 feet long (1770m and 1868m). As soon as the reservoir was impounded it became apparent that excessive seepage was occurring. From 1962 to 1985 a series of remedial works was performed using several techniques, but the problems continued under the dam, jeopardizing its generating potential and possibly undermining its stability.Finally, the decision was made to construct a deep cutoff primarily under the concrete portion of the dam to remedy the problem. PROCUREMENTOn July 5th, 2001 best and final offers were solicited by the Corps of Engineers (COE) for the construction of a deep cut-off to be built in front of the concrete portion of the dam from the bottom of the lake and tied into it. The cut-off had to cross an existing lock structure and an underwater retaining wall, as well as the remnants of a steel coffer cell left in place from the initial construction.The specifications required that the wall be built with a minimum thickness of 24” (600mm) and that it extended from the bottom of the lake to elevation -5 (1.52m) into the Providence formation, an impervious layer.While the land portions of the wall were on average 208 feet (63.4m) deep, the marine portion started from up to 90 feet (27m) of water and continued through different rock formations for another 100 feet (30m).Contractors were invited to propose their own method of constructing the cut-off and offers would be evaluated using several criteria, including technical, economical, organizational and experience.Three proposals were received and on August 14, 2001 an award was made to the Joint Venture (JV) of Treviicos and Rodio."

DURING the past year the Cadillac-Malanie area in northwestern Quebec has been catapulted to the front as one of Canada's most active gold mining districts. Late in 1934 the area was lolling along in the doldrums, with one producing mine and a handful of active prospects. 1935 passed with only slightly increased activity, but saw the start of production at Canadian Malartic mine. Lightning struck in April, 1936, when a new and phenomenally rich ore-body was found in O'Brien Gold mine, and by midsummer the camp was ablaze with activity. An important new discovery on the Pan-Canadian property, and pleasing underground developments at Sladen Malarric, East Malartic, and Lapa Cadillac, in addition to other new developments, lent fodder to the flame, and at present several dozen properties are being actively developed. For the past three seasons, the Geological Survey of Canada has been engaged in a fairly detailed study of the geology and mineral deposits across Cadillac, Malarric, and Fourniere townships. Ir is the purpose of this paper to present a brief preliminary statement of the structural and economic geology and to discuss some of the more important problems that have been found to exist. The reader is requested to remember that the paper is a preliminary one and that therefore the conclusions presented are open to revision. It is impossible to make full acknowledgment for help received, for the writers are indebted to practically every operator and prospector in the area for generous co-operation in the work, and to several private, provincial, and federal geologists for data and frank discussion of problems encountered. Over a score of student assistants from McGill, Queen's, and Toronto have given excellent service. Published reports by Wilson, Cooke, James, Mawdsley, L. V. Bell, and J. J. The practice of using two or more main ventilating fans is common at large coal mines throughout the coal-mining industry. To assure adequate and efficient ventilation at may mines, such multiple-fan systems are necessary. The hazards associated with interrelated ventilating currents if a fan fails are controversial, and to date little effort has been made to study this specific problem and to determine corrective measures. The obvious questions are: 1. Is there a hazard? 2. Under what circumtances does it exist? 3. How serious is it? 4. What are corrective measures? Most members of the mining fraternity agree that reduced quantities of air and changed airflow patterns introduce potential hazards, especially where gaseous conditions exist when mechanized methods are used in concentrated mining 0 The seriousness of the hazard depends on the ease with which methane accumlates in face areas or haulage roads, the quantity of methane in workedout areas, and the extent to which reversed air currents interfere with escape and recovery operations after mine fires or explosions. These studies cover three mines and give the distribution of air for the specific conditions show. Each mine probably has somewhat different airflowpressure relationships between fans. Corrosion of equipment and machinery in the coal industry is usually the result of three main agents: acids, chlorides, and abrasion. Acids and chlorides are especially troublesome in coal preparation plants where soluble salts and sulfur in the coal produce a highly corrosive wash solution. Abrasion is common in all operations where coal is handled or conveyed. Together, the acid-chloride-abrasion combination results in some of the worst corrosive conditions found in any industry. The variety of equipment and structures in the coal industry calls for different corrosion control techniques. Table 1 lists the areas of concern for a number of items. Just as there is a wide variety of corrosion problems, there is a wide array of coating materials available. Tables 2 and 3 are selection charts to provide guidance in narrowing down the choices. Experience has shown that a limited number of coating systems work best on coal equipment and structures. These systems are described in Table 4. The good-better-best designation in the table refers to coating system longevity. Good indicates the least costly and shortest service life. In nearly all cases the lowest annualized cost can be achieved by using the coating system rated best, due to the avoidance of costly repaints and unnecessary downtime. The most expensive coating system, though, is worthless unless the coating system is properly applied. Field inspection to insure compliance with specifications is an important aspect, and is a service available from many coating suppliers. Even the best coating systems require periodic maintenance to achieve satisfactory results. Spot rusting from mechanical damage should be repaired annually to maximize the coatingsystem's results.

DR. W. F. GRAY (Contributed discussion, presented at meeting by Mr. S. C. Mifilen): Mr. Rowe's suggestion that the Institute should organize itself to interpret the needs of the mining industry to federal and provincial mines departments should commend itself to our membership as sensible and practical, and as one which these public administrative bodies may welcome. One has to start with the premise that those who head the departments of mines in question have the welfare of the industry at heart. Also, it must be postulated that the technical viewpoint of our membership is necessarily free of political considerations. With these reservations, one ventures to state that both Mr. Rowe in his communication to the present session of the Institute, and Professor M. Y. Williams in his earlier communication to the Western Meeting, on The Geological Survey and Mining Development (1), voice the regret general among our membership at the abandonment of the honoured name, and to some extent of the status, of the Geological Survey of Canada. The writer, in 1932, devoted his Presidential Address to the Institute to an appreciation of the value to Canadian mining of the Geological Survey of Canada (2), affirming the desire of the Institute "that the work of the Survey shall be maintained at the highest pitch of efficiency the resources of our country will permit, because, to scrimp expenses on the Survey, is 'to save at the spigot and lose at the bunghole'." He believes that is still the opinion of the Institute, and, if contraction of the usefulness of the Survey is feared by our members at this time, it is incumbent upon the Institute, in fairness to those who direct our government, to say so in precise and explicit terms. Mr. Rowe puts the situation pithily when he writes: "We have reached a stage in our development where a stock-taking and co-ordination of existing knowledge and data is essential. This is a part of that basic function of Dominion mineral technical services which is national and not provincial in its scope".

Recent events have raised the issue of whether, and if so when and how, an explorer may gather data from a mining tenement or permit which is held under the relevant mining Act by another party. Two situations arise: that of the small operator who wishes to prospect, and if successful mark off, ground held by others by virtue of the local form of exploration permit; and that of a regional explorer who may wish to enter on to some one else's existing mining tenement within the region of interest. The legal situation varies from state to state. At present the broad consensus seems to be that, provided consent is given, small-scale prospecting on another's exploration permit is at least tolerated if not actually provided for by the relevant Act. Entry onto a granted tenement to carry out any form of exploration is, however, prohibited in all jurisdictions unless consent is given. Furthermore it would appear that the proposal and conclusion of a joint venture agreement places certain obligations upon the party proposing to carry out exploration. These conclusions apply where ground surveys are proposed. Where data acquisition is by aerial survey the situation is much less clear, principally it would appear, because up to now little thought has been given to it. If trespass applies at ground level, at what height does it cease to apply? Can aerial magnetometry or photography be classified as prospecting? Is there an obligation upon public authorities who carry out remote sensing to make data available to the holders of mining tenements within the surveyed areas? Moves are now afoot to address these and other considerations, and it would be in the interests of everyone if a national approach to the problem could be adopted from the beginning. Certain suggestions in this respect are put forward.

This study is carried out in the Zenit mining concession, which is located in the city of San Pablo in the department of Cajamarca in Peru. The Project has 33 mineralized structures and according to laboratory analyzes we have the presence of gold and silver. The geostatistical evaluation provides an analysis on the distribution of precious metals in the vein. This information is used to improve the efficiency of metal extraction and to reduce costs. The general objective is to evaluate the polymetallic veins (Au and Ag), for which the classification of resources (measured, indicated, and inferred) has been carried out, taking into account the parameters of minimum distance from the composite, corresponding volume and tonnage calculation. In addition, an inventory of estimated geological resources was carried out with the block grades obtained to generate the tonnage-grade curves.

"Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices and currencies expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades. Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit, not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill. Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times. This paper explores: the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process; and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Case studies of projects using the IPJ to pre-concentrate and reject gangue are also included. Pre-concentration and gangue rejection provide the potential to develop marginal ore deposits, thus providing higher grades, less gangue and more metal at a lower operating cost to producers."

The mineral resource potential of the Los Bronces deposit was successfully evaluated by an intense, coordinated program over a 37-month period (April 1978-May 1981) as part of an economic feasibility study. The program included more than 120 km of core drilling, 63 km of access road construction under adverse topographic and climatic conditions, detailed geological mapping, plus other related activities. This Tertiary-age copper-molybdenum deposit is composed of an earlier mineralized porphyry-type body intruded in part by a large complex of mineralized hydrothermal breccia pipes. Both intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks are present. Erosion, oxidation, leaching, and supergene enrichment of copper have resulted in a deposit now exposed at the surface that contains more than 368 Mt grading about 1% copper equivalent as sulfides.

Although the use of gaseous fuel in blast-furnaces has been often proposed, I hope the description of a very simple, yet practical and valuable, application of natural gas to the smelting of lead-ores and residues, at the works of the Pennsylvania Lead Company, will prove interesting. In May, 1886, directly after replacing the use of bituminous coal at the above works by that of natural gas, half-inch pipes from a branch gas-main were inserted directly into the tuyeres of a lead blast-furnace, and through these pipes gas was delivered into the furnace, with the air-blast at a pressure a little more than double that in the tuyere-pipes. At the same time the blast-pressure at the tuyeres was increased by an amount estimated to give a sufficient air-delivery when mixed with the gas-supply. The amount of gas delivered to the furnace is easily regulated by stop-cocks at each tuyere, and is under the immediate control of the furnace manager. Upon the introduction of gas into the tuyeres of the furnace the coke charged at the mouth was reduced 30 per cent., this being the amount of coke which I thought could be advantageously replaced by gas. This first estimate has proved to be very close to the working results, though probably the average gas-consumption corresponds to a little less than 30 per cent. of the former coke used. The proportion that we use varies, with the nature of the furnaceburden, between 20 and 40 per cent. of the total fuel. We have used 60 per cent. of gas; but there is difficulty in keeping a cool furnace-mouth when the proportion is so high. With some residues, notably metallic drosses containing some zinc, we have found it best not to use over 20 per cent. gaseous fuel. The percentage used with ore-charges has generally been higher than that used in smelting the higher-lead charges of residues from our refining works. It results from this use of natural gas that the temperature of the hearth is under almost immediate control, and, for this reason chiefly, a cleaner and more uniform slag can be run, and the furnaceworking can be made more nearly independent of the effects of atmospheric conditions or the variable moisture in the furnace-burden.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen: It is a pleasure to be here this morning as a representative of Dean Witter Reynolds; one of the foremost international investment firms in North America. My colleague, Hugh Wilmer (who will be speaking to you a little later), and I are involved as research analysts in the research and writing of published reports containing recommendations on the buying or selling of North American and South African gold and silver mining shares. Our talk this morning will focus on the gold mining operating costs of North American and South African gold producers. However, I am not going to bore you with reams of statistics on the operating costs of large numbers of gold mining operations; how meaningful would this data be to you? Instead, I will discuss what the investor should look for, and how he should use this knowledge in making his investment decision.
