Inferring individual component flotation rates from recovery-time data of ore complexes is important in optimising and designing minerals processing plants. However, existing two-component first-order flotation models are computationally intensive to solve using conventional non-linear least squares regression. In this paper, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is used to approximate the inverse function which predicts the two-component first-order model parameters using recovery-time data. This paper compares the accuracy and computation speed of the proposed CNN against traditional non-linear least squares regression on 1 million generated data based on a known two-component firstorder kinetic model. It is shown that using a CNN is possible to approximate the inverse function for the non-invertible two-component model with recovery-time as an input matrix for convolution operations. The CNN method is 450 times faster to compute than the Trust-Region (TR) non-linear least squares regression algorithm. However, the CNN model is less accurate compared to the TR algorithm overall. Over the last decades long BOF campaign lives have successfully been established due to improved quality of the refractory material and due to intensive use of slag splashing. On the other hand, steelmakers are more and more faced with elevated phosphorous contents in the hot metal. This phenomenon is a global tendency caused by the increasing pressure to utilize cheaper iron ore sources. In India, iron ore sources have traditionally elevated phosphorous contents. The phosphorous removal challenge calls for using bottom stirring at the BOF converters, as these combined technology of top oxygen blowing and inert gas stirring through the bottom, helps significantly to improve bath mixing and thus in shifting the process towards the optimum metallurgical equilibrium conditions. All this is common knowledge and daily business in the steelmaking shops all over world. Unfortunately, focusing on a long BOF refractory campaign by means of slag splashing and maintaining optimum conditions for high efficient bottom stirring are naturally conflictive aims. Applying slag splashing causes unavoidable bottom built-up which in turn covers or even blocks the bottom tuyeres. Most of the steelmaking shops today are either operating slag splashing without bottom stirring or bottom stirring without slag splashing. Some are trying slag splashing with bottom stirring but mostly only for a certain short period of the whole campaign. Baoshan Meishan Steel is an integrated steel plant, located in Nanjing (China). The plant is operating two BOF shops (3x 150t and 2x 250t), producing various steel grades. Because of the iron ore source used, the hot metal phosphorous content is rather high with up to 2,000 ppm. In order to achieve low phosphorous contents in the molten steel below 200 ppm, Meishan uses the TBM (Thyssen Bottom Metallurgy) bottom stirring technology in both of their steel plants, successfully applying slag splashing and efficient bottom stirring for campaigns up to 10,000 heats. This paper describes the operation procedures, strategies, and the maintenance concept established at Meishan Steel which is suitable to meet both conflicting targets at the same time.

Solution mining followed by solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) is one possible way to economically extract copper from ore bodies which cannot otherwise be profitably exploited. Published costs for the unit processes of SX and EW are out of date especially in view of the newer reagents now available and the newer circuit configurations, This paper updates the costs for SX-EW in 1985 dollars and also discusses some of the trade-offs which must be made when designing an SX-W plant.

In-situ leaching, initiated in 1986 at San manual, was economically developed in 1989. The primary reason for this lag time between startup and viable production was the time required for technical development. The technical development pursued comprised detailed design, development, and implementation of in-situ well construction methods, formulation of suitable well pattern arrays, and the development of extensive hydrogeologic and geochemical knowledge of the mineral deposit. Since 1989, the in-situ leaching program has become a viable and cost effective method to extract copper from the supergene mineralized zone of the San Manuel deposit. The in-situ leaching methods that are currently utilized have been progressively expanded and continually developed and will became the cornerstone of copper production from the San Manuel oxide mineral deposit. This paper presents an overview of the supergene hydrogeology, current design techniques, drilling methods and well completion, pump determination and setting, solution management, and future plans for the increased extraction of copper by in-situ leaching methods at the San Manuel mine.

The founder of social psychology is sometimes identified as Kurt Lewin. In a 1947 article, Kurt Lewin coined the term ‘group dynamics’. He described this notion as the way that groups and individuals act and react to changing circumstances. Lewin theorised that when a group is established it becomes a unified system with unique dynamics that cannot be understood by evaluating members individually. The discipline of social psychology really emerged out of World War II and tackled questions associated with human judgement and decision-making by the Nazis. For a comprehensive look at the development of social psychology look at Abelson, Frey and Gregg (2004).Social psychology is concerned with the way social arrangements affect human judgement and decision-making. What the author has done is apply the knowledge of this new discipline to an understanding of risk, safety and leadership. This paper will explain some of the developments in social psychology, such as the discovery of the bystander effect, Groupthink, bounded rationality, heuristics, risk homeostasis and the Milgram effect.The social psychology of risk tackles the way decisions are made about risk in their social context. Unless organisations understand that decision-making is socially conditioned, they are unlikely to be able to tackle the complexities of culture change or the development of risk maturity.The paper will offer a new understanding of why people do what they do, how risk makes sense and why a ‘dumb down’ approach to safety is dangerous. "Washington State's diverse geological setting is reflected by its several types of porphyry Cu-Mo deposits. All are associated with calc-alkaline intrusions, and they range in age from Jurassic to Miocene.The largest is the Mount Tolman Mo-Cu deposit located in the Omineca Belt. It contains 2.18 billion tonnes of material averaging 0.093% MoS2 and 0.09% Cu. There are intermediate-size Mesozoic deposits in the Intermontane Belt. The Cascade volcanic arc hosts small- to medium-Tertiary deposits. Among these, of particular interest is the Sunrise breccia pipe, which has been explored over a vertical distance of 1000 m. It contains reserves of 64.6 million tonnes averaging 0.319% Cu and 0.071% MoS2 with significant tungsten values. The Glacier Peak deposits have potential resources of 1.7 billion tonnes averaging 0.334% Cu and more than 0.015% MoS2 and also contain tungsten. The Margaret deposit can be classified as a porphyry Cu-Au type; it has reserves of 200 million tonnes averaging 0.434% Cu, 0.0175% MoS2> 0.27 g!t Au and 1.92 g!t Ag. Drill intercepts of the North Fork deposit also show significant gold values.Mineralization and hydrothermal alteration of these deposits are typical of porphyry deposits, although some differences can be noted. The Mount Tolman molybdenum deposit contains topaz alteration zones and is transitional between a plutonic type and a Climax-type molybdenum system. Other deposits, such as the Kelsey, Mazama, North Fork, and Margaret, are low-sulphide systems that contain significant amounts of magnetite."

"We have tried a new method to fabricate cobalt oxide films onto porous films directly by an electrodeposition method at low temperature. The porous substrate films (membrane-filters and paper) were placed between a LiOH solution and a CoSO4 solution and treated under electricalcurrents of ~1 mA/cm2 using carbon cathode and anode. Effects of temperatures, flow rates and electrical currents have been investigated. As a result, we found that the LiCoO2 films and Co3O4 films were successfully fabricated on paper and/or porous PTFE filters at 120 °C, while CoOOH films were deposited at 80 °C. Furthermore, LiCoO2 films did not cover whole the substrates, but was fabricated just over the anode. The chemical reactions of electrodeposition were also considered from these results.IntroductionRecent agreements on global environment require rapid progress of low energy and low waste processings for the fabrication of thin films that succeed to the mass production with the high consumption of the fossil fuels (such as physical vapor deposition°, chemical vapor deposition2), dip coating with firing3) etc.). The total energy consumption in aqueous systems should be the lowest among all these processing routes, because a much lager excess of energy is necessary to create melts, vapor, gas, or plasma than to form an aqueous solution at the same temperature4)The ""Soft Solution-Process"" (SSP) was one of the best concepts to realize the low energy and low waste fabrication of inorganic materials. 5) Generally speaking, SSP gives similar results to any other processing using fluids (such as vapor, gas plasma) and/or beam/vacuum processing. However, the total energy consumption of all these possessing routes should be the lowest in aqueous systems, because a much larger excess of energy is necessary to create melts, vapor, gas or plasma than to form an aqueous solution at the same temperature (Fig. 1). This idea can be easily demonstrated, using the simple example of BaTiO3. The energy diagram for the formation of BaTiO3 from various precursors is shown in reference 4. Every year more and more mining companies are entering joint ventures to look for minerals. Large companies join large companies, small companies join small companies, and large companies join small companies. Mining companies join oil companies, chemical companies, machinery companies, and companies with no other connection to the minerals business. And well they might, for here is a way for both minerals-oriented companies and those that have no background or knowledge of the minerals business to get actively involved in an outwardly-attractive but high-risk enterprise with the chance to participate in a lucrative minerals find. Thus, for reasons beyond those normally associated with joint ventures in many other fields, corporations, companies, groups, and even individuals are looking to joint exploration ventures as the answer to all problems of getting into or staying in mining.

"During the design of a typical modern subway, engineering aspects prevail since underground structures remain hidden to most humans. Aligning the advanced architectural concepts with the engineering requirements of the Naples Metro Line 1 (Italy) called for a thorough rethinking of the design process so that the engineering could be kept aligned with the architecture, integrating seamlessly the two with the construction methods, standards and technology.The preliminary design process consisted of three major phases: •,geotechnical and geological issues, preselection of construction methods; •,functional scenario based on engineering and construction requirements; •,review and merging of the architectural concept with the functional and engineering aspects. The last phase proved the most demanding one, matching the first outline sketches with the applicable construction methods. This required continuous alignment of approaches, eventually leading to the design consistent with the original architectural vision, yet fully compliant with the engineering and construction framework. At the beginning general information on Line 1 will be provided, followed by some main features of the construction work along the Dante – Garibaldi section both for the tunnel and the stations. At the end, the selected methodology and the related consequences on the functional, technical and architectural design will be outlined.City of Naples current municipal transportation plan envisages a circle ring line for the metro line M1. Actually it’s open to public the segment Piscinola – Dante – Garibaldi run by AMM, municipal company. This ring segment has been built by Metropolitana di Napoli, while Napoli Metro Engineering (company belonging to MMspa Group) is in charge for the planning of entire system and construction management. Line 1 connects Piscinola-Secondigliano northern periphery to Vomero shopping neighborhood, downtown and Central Railway Station."

"AT ANY TIME, it is a pleasure to me to be invited to address The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy because it represents an industry and men with whom I have been happily, if peripherally, associated continuously for forty years. This year, it is a particular pleasure because I believe that an important subject has arisen which I propose to discuss.This is a major discovery in the earth sciences, first fully revealed this winter, but already widely accepted. The basis of this revolution, for it is no less, is that measurements of three different features of the earth all change in exactly the same ratios. These ratios are the same in all parts of the world. The results from one set are thus being used to make precise numerical predictions about all the sets in all parts of the world. No such accurate correlations and predictions have ever been found before in geology or areal geophysics. The whole subject of earth science has thereby been radically altered.The first of these measurements is that of the direction of magnetic polarity in lava flows. When piles of young lavas are examined with the aid of a pocket compass, it is noted that some flows are magnetized in the direction of the earth's field and some in the reverse direction (Figure 1). By accurately dating enough flows, a time scale of the dates of reversals has been established. During the past four million years, nine reversals have occurred synchronously all over the world (Cox, Darymple and Doell, 1967, McDougall and Chamalaun, 1966) (Figure 2). It appears that the scale can be extended back to Precambrian times (McMahon and Strangway, 1967). This time scale is the first of the 'three identical ratios."

TAXES in general are onerous and are not a pleas- ant subject for discourse. There are, however, some very cogent reasons why we should dedicate a part of our thoughts and services to the solution of our taxation problems: The happiness of every individual in the United States depends on the maintenance of a stable government. The collection of taxes is an indispensable function of a stable government, and the power to collect taxes depends in part on the question whether taxes are fair and equitable. As representatives of the mining industry it is our duty to .protect it from tax burdens that are discriminatory or- unjust, As citizens we find that taxation is incessantly endeavouring to unravel the knots in our purse-strings. Many members of the Institute may be consulted .by clients on taxation problems, especially the phases which re- late to depletion and valuation. It is the hope of the writer that the discussion of some of the current depletion and valuation problems will stimulate interest in the problems, and as a consequence of this new interest facts will be ventilated, opinions rendered and services performed, which will be a means of solving the problems to the satisfaction of all parties interested.

Introduction The US mineral industry in 1983 participated in the recovery from the recent recession. Compared with 1982, the value of raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8% to $21.2 billion. The $218 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output represented a 9% increase over 1982. Even in real terms, these figures reflect growth. Demand for nonfuel mineral materials, of course, depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1983. Of particular importance to the mineral industry were surges in key mineral-consuming sectors such as construction and automobile manufacturing. New housing starts rose one-third, to 1.7 million units, while automakers turned out about 35% more cars (6.8 million) and 25% more trucks (2.4 million) than in 1982. These are significant increases, even considering recent trends toward smaller, lighter vehicles, and multiple-unit housing. A comeback for the mineral industry, however, is bound to proceed unevenly, particularly at the beginning. Traditionally, the industry lags behind the rest of the economy during a recovery, and some mineral products respond to overall economic improvement more quickly than others. This pattern has been repeated many times and the industry is used to it. Mineral executives know it is best to be patient and cautious during the first stages of an economic upturn. Many experts say that it may take extraordinary toughness, patience, and caution this time around. Steel Improves Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production - rose 14% to 77 Mt (85 million st), stimulating a 7% rise in domestic iron ore production to 39 Mt (38 million It). Still, the iron ore industry operated at less than half capacity, with most major mines remaining closed for part of the year. Iron ore imports dropped 24% to 10 Mt (11 million st), so demand was partly met by withdrawals from stocks. Despite the increase in steel production for 1983, output remained far below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1983 production was still 29% less than in 1981. Raw steelmaking capacity actually declined about 10% during the year to 122 Mt (135 million st). The industry continued to cite steel imports, especially those from developing nations, as a major cause of domestic capacity loss. As long as steel production remains weak, steelmaking metals suffer. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about one-third capacity in 1983, with six of the 19 companies involved being closed all year. The US mined no manganese or chromium, and very little nickel, although the country's only nickel mine did resume production in November. Molybdenum production, at 13.6 t (15 st), was only about one-third as much as in 1982. The major molybdenum mines, Climax and Henderson in Colorado, remained closed all year. To meet demand, molybdenum stocks were halved to 19 t (21 st). Mine shipments of tungsten, another mineral tied to steel production, dropped 30% to 1.1 kt (1,200 st) of contained metal. One of the most positive responses to the general economic recovery came from the aluminum smelting industry. By the end of the year, it was operating at about 79% capacity, compared to 59% in January. Nevertheless, the 3.3 Mt (3.64 million st) of primary aluminum produced represented only a slight increase over 1982. Total bauxite imports were about 27% below 1982 levels. Quarry operators must continue to change and adapt environmental compliance methods to meet the increasingly demanding regulations. To fulfill industry needs, a computer-based decision support system is being developed to facilitate decision making that mine operators are required to make regarding environmental responsibilities. This system can help to determine permitting and compliance measures needed for air, surface water, groundwater, noise, aesthetics, vegetation, wetlands, hazardous wastes, storage tanks and wildlife habitats during the development, operation, and closure phases of mining. Operators will utilize the system's user-friendly interface consisting of mouse driven responses and limited keyboard entries on a desktop computer. The system is easy to upgrade according to the user's needs and changes in current laws and regulations. Data input models, user interfaces, and support of decision making are explained. The program permits inclusion of the decision maker's own insights through "what-if' analysis, in which the user can change ad hoc entries and check the related consequences. Using this approach, the user has complete control over all steps of the decision making process. A storm water example is selected to demonstrate the potential benefits of the support system to environmental decision makers.

Cyanide is a fast-acting, highly toxic substance but, at the same time, is deemed essential for sustaining life as well 'as our standard of living. In this manuscript, the facts about cyanide are presented beginning with a brief history and definition and ending with a discussion on cyanide alternatives. Other topics include speciation, physical characteristics, toxicity, manufacturing, cyanogenics, cyanide cycle, separation, destruction, and markets including those outside the mining industry. Emphasis, of course, is placed on gold production by leaching and how it is influenced by ore type, mineral characteristics and economics as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

The ASC has a dual role of business facilitator and law enforcer. Only certain types of expert report are of interest to the ASC. The powers of the old Companies Code and the Corporations law are compared. NCSC Policy Release 149 was dependent on the prescriptive powers given to the NCSC in the Companies Code. The Corporations Law does not give the ASC power to prescribe the contents of expert reports. The requirement now is for all necessary information. Research evidence is that some investors want simpler prospectuses while others need more detail. The ASC's examination of expert reports is after registration of primary documents. This leads to a necessity for experts to maintain adequate records.

Sampling and geological models are the basis of recoverable resources models. They are pillars of mineral resources and reserves estimation, and what geostatistical methods for grade estimation should rely upon. The resource model is best estimated if geostatistical methods make good use of sound geologic models. Data collection from the original drill holes, including field procedures and the quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of those samples are pillar one of a resource model. The second pillar of the model is the good use of the logged geological information, resulting robust geological interpretations, and the corresponding three-dimensional models of those interpretations. These models are partly subjective and mostly conditioned by the quality of logging and the geologist’s experience. They are also conditioned by the quality of the three-dimensional models built, regardless of the modeling method employed, traditional or implicit. Grade estimation is more commonly done by applying some geostatistical method and using the two basic sources of information, data and geologic model. Multiple stages are involved in this process, and in all of them there are uncertainties and risks that have to be dealt with. Knowledge, understanding, interpretation, and management of the model’s fundamentals are critical, given that they directly affect its accuracy and predictive quality. The mitigation of related risks allows for the creation of opportunities, generating value and reducing the project’s uncertainty. This paper discusses some of the key variables, uncertainties, and risks involved in the resource modeling process, illustrating with specific examples; discusses possible risk mitigation alternatives, and proposes best practices to avoid or mitigate those uncertainties. Emphasis is placed on taking advantage of technological advances without ignoring fundamentals. INTRODUCTION In the area of mineral resource estimation, one alarming trend that these authors have observed in the past 20 years or so is that the care and diligence in checking the work as it progresses has generally diminished. This is, perhaps, an unintended consequence of the availability of new technologies and tools that attempt simplify and speed up the work involved. This has led to a more casual attitude towards checks and balances that have to be in place at any given stage of the process before proceeding to subsequent stages, as best practices dictate. To some extent, some of these aspects are covered in international standards for resource estimates reporting (JORC, 2012; CIM, 2010). But these are broad, and do not specifically recommend best practices to a level of detail that would have an impact on certain aspects of the process. There are numerous references in the geology and mining journals and conferences that discuss the consequences of poor recoverable resource models (Baker and Giacomo, 1998; Vaughan, 1997).

While coal seam gas is considered to be an unconventional gas, the proliferation of areas under exploration and development mean that it is rapidly becoming main stream. The potential of New Zealand's coals to produce coal seam gas has been recognised for some time. However, key market drivers have not been suitable for the progression of this potential into reality. Kenham Holdings Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, recognising the potential for the gas in New Zealand have initiated what is the largest ever assessment of New Zealand's coal seam gas potential. The premature demise of the giant Maui field has raised the focus of new gas developments and has increased interest in what we are doing. Over the past couple of years Kenham Holdings Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd have approached the assessment of the coal seam gas potential in a staged programme. Preliminary assessment of the data on the permit areas indicates that the potential resource may be up to 500 PJ. To date, preliminary appraisals have been completed or are underway on a significant number of fields. Exploratory drilling has been completed or initiated on several of those fields, with results from this work being fed into the preliminary modelling as it has become available. Given that in many of these areas there is no pre-existing information concerning their gas potential and world wide experience with lignite is practically nonexistent, it has been a steep learning curve with many surprises. However, initial gas content results and preliminary gas flow models have been on the whole, rather pleasing, with the commerciality of some developments already apparent.
