In the planning phase of every construction project, layout of temporary facilities is a crucial task; site layout can affect safety, travel cost and time, construction productivity, and space utilization. However, site layout planning can be a complicated problem, due to the interdependency of influencing factors. Although interaction among activities is one of the major drivers of site layout planning, it has not been properly addressed in past research. In this study, simulation is presented as a promising tool to address this gap. The capability of simulation technology to model complex processes in construction projects makes use of simulation tools in site layout optimization problems effective, while existing methods are unable to perfectly model these problems, in some cases. Additionally, the advantages and challenges of implementing simulation are assessed and a generic framework for simulation application in site layout planning is proposed.

(communication to the Secretary): When a simple beam supports any given load, the lower fibers me in tension while the upper fibers are in compression, and if its cross-section is rectangular the neutral surface, where the stresses pass through zero from tension to compression, is at mid-depth, provided the elastic limit is not exceeded. In addition to the longitudinal stresses, there are horizontal shearing-stresses between the fibers which have their maximum value in the neutral surface, and which equal zero at the upper and lower surfaces, while there are also vertical shearing-stresses. Let another beam of the same dimensions be placed on top of this one, and the load be doubled, it then produces stresses in each beam of the same character, magnitude and distribution as in the preceding case, provided there be no friction between the adjacent surfaces of the beams. Next let these two beams be so firmly united that there will be no motion between them when the same load is again applied. All the fibers in the upper beam are now in compression, and those in the lower beam in tension, while the maximum stresses in the outer fibers are only one-half as large as before. The strength of the combined beams is therefore doubled. If, however, some motion occurs between the beams, then the stresses in some of the lower fibers of the upper beam pass from compression to tension, and those in some of the upper fibers of the lower beam from tension to compression, while the stresses in the outer fibers have a magnitude between the two values previously stated. The Iron Mountain, situated three-quarters of a mile NE. of the limits of the City of Durango, rises abruptly from a level plain, and trends N. 83' E. Fig. 1 gives a view of the mountain, with the company's iron-works. There are indications that the vein or deposit of iron-ore extends also about two leagues across the Murca ranch, in the same general direction. The Iron Mountain proper is divided into two great lenses by a horse of cantera or eruptive rock, some hundreds of feet in width.

Introduction In order to improve outputs and to reduce or hold mining costs, many attempts have been made to mechanize the getting and loading of coal in the major coal producing countries, and machines of various kinds and sizes have been designed and manufactured. It is understood that the Gloucester Getter recently installed in a British colliery also shows reasonable promise. It was felt, however, that to meet the conditions of the mines in Nova Scotia, any machine developed must have certain distinctive characteristics. It must: ( 1) Be able to cut and deliver coal in quantity and of the right sizes ( 2) Be easily manoeuvrable ( 3) Be suitable for longwall operations ( 4) Not interfere with timbers already set ( 5) Cut its own stable (6) Work on reasonably heavy gradients

Some months before taking up work on black powder the Survey had resumed work on an interrupted investigation of explosions in coal-mines, a subject which is engaging the attention. of numerous investigators. An unusual number of serious disasters has directed to. the subject a study which discloses the disquieting fact that, in the. United States, the ratio of lives lost per ton of coal mined has been on the increase. Methods of coal-mining have changed to some extent with the great increase of output, attained in, comparatively recent years. These changes involve the working of very extensive mines, with increased difficulty of ventilation, increased accumulation of coal-dust, and. a very great increase in the amount of explosive used.. . This last point assumes truly startling proportions when it is carefully observed. In the fields of the Middle. West it is not now uncommon for a miner to use six ,kegs (150 lb.) of black powder in a "pay" of two weeks, while within the memory. of men still active, one keg (25 .lb.) would last two men for a " pay." So. great has . the use of explosives become in some fields that the skilled coal-miner is hard to find, and the coal is not mined, but blasted. Ore and concentrate are transported on, the surface at western mining districts by (1) railroads, (2) surface trams, (3) aerial trams, (4) trucks, and (5) wagons, and (6) on the backs of animals. The daily and ultimate tonnage to be moved is the principal factor governing the selection of the method of transportation. Railroads are preferred when large tonnages are to be hauled over relatively long distances. The mine-haulage system may be extended or surface trams built to the mill or shipping point if a practical track grade is possible and if the distance is relatively short. Aerial trams have a special field of usefulness for transportation over steep or excessively rough terrain.

The land phosphate deposits of the U.S. southeastern coastal plain have long been a major factor in the world trade of phosphate rock (Fig. 1). As recently as 1979, deposits of North Carolina and Florida alone accounted for about 33 percent of the entire world's phosphate exports. This situation is changing, however. World production increased by ~9 %, yet the U.S. share was down to ~28% in 1984. A complex interaction of economic and political factors combined with increasing costs of raw materials, production, and transportation have led to this systematic erosion of the U.S. market share. Changing land-use patterns within the southeast, environmental pressures, exhaustion of shallow high-grade resources in Central Florida, and the increased pressure from expanding low-cost production in other countries throughout the world account for much of the present difficulty in the U.S. phosphate industry. Considering this depressed environment -- what are the prospects for development of offshore resources? A summary of new research on offshore phosphorite within the U.S. Exclusive Economic. Zone (EEZ), as well as an attempt to place possible development of these resources within the current economic setting, is the purpose of this presentation. We will emphasize work in progress on a major offshore deposit along the U.S. Atlantic Margin as well as new research on Pacific Ocean occurrences of phosphorite on seamounts and insular slopes within U.S. waters.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 350 natural gas samples from 19 States collected during calendar year 1362 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Helium Activity of the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus. Four previous publications have been made to present the results of 5,648 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines, Helium Activity, prior to 1962. The first, Bulletin 486, 3/ contains analyses and data on 2,195 gas samples collected during the period 1917-47. Bulletin 576, 4/ the second publication, includes data and analyses for 1,575 samples collected from 1947 through May 1956. The third bulletin contains 1,444 analyses and source data of samples obtained from May 1956 to January 1, 1961.

One of the problems that arises in the early stages of the mine planning before the determination of the mining exploitation method is to predict what will be the recoverable ore reserves in tonnage, grade and metal quantity, if the select ion is based upon block grades. The estimation of these recuperation or recoverable functions can act as an important planning tool in what concerns the appraisal of the consequences of ore-waste discrimination of individual blocks in a selective mining operation. Estimation methods of all these functions are discussed together with cross validation tests using the available information concerning a preliminary drilling campaign accomplished during the exploration stage of an iron orebody located in the North of Portugal (Moncorvo Orebody).

This morning I would like to speak to you about an area of chemistry that is enjoying a revival-organometallic compounds. This renewed interest, principally stimulated by defense needs, has already created new markets for the products of the mineral industry. Although the consumption of metals in these new products is modest at oresent, several hold promise of importance. Because this is a new and growing market, I am sure the Council of Economics is aware of many of its facets and is interested in new developments. Of course, the chemical industry has been a significant consumer of minerals for many years. I estimate that in 1957 the chemical-industry purchased a total of $1175 million worth of minerals as raw materials (not including fuels). The Goondicum Crater industrial minerals deposit is located about 30 km east of Monto, Central Queensland, Australia. Early exploration programs in the 1990s found alluvial ilmenite along the banks of the Burnett River. This mineralisation was traced upstream to the Goondicum Crater. The Goondicum Crater is a topographic feature centred on a roughly circular 6 km diameter layered gabbro complex. Significant ilmenite, apatite, titano-magnetite and feldspar mineralisation are present in a weathered horizon up to 25 m thick. After several drilling campaigns in the Crater and subsequent feasibility studies, the project was developed by Monto Minerals Ltd, an ASX listed company, in 2007. However, the project never achieved production performance expectations and ran out of commissioning funds. The company subsequently went into voluntary administration in August 2008.In 2009, the RMM Capital group, of Brisbane, took control of Monto Resources Pty Ltd, and renamed the company Belridge Enterprises Pty Ltd (Belridge). Belridge commissioned a redevelopment study aimed at recommencing mining and processing operations. As part of the redevelopment study the authors planned a drilling campaign, managed a quality control program and developed a block model. This paper describes the drilling program, analytical procedures, quality control procedures and the preparation of the block model.The block model for the resource estimate was created using 1 m high blocks, wireframes defining the main material types, and 2.5 m thick horizontal search ellipsoids with a radial pattern. The deposit was ‘flattened’ prior to modelling. To assist with the economic evaluation of the project, each block in the model was assigned a net dollar value based on economic parameters provided by Belridge, including anticipated revenues and costs. This modelling technique allowed for efficient investigation of various scenarios and was used extensively in the development and optimisation of the project’s financial model. At a zero net value per block, comparable to a break-even cut-off grade of four per cent ilmenite equivalent, the Indicated plus Measured resource is estimated at 51 Mt, averaging 4.1 per cent ilmenite, 1.9 per cent apatite and 2.5 per cent titano-magnetite.

Due to the high energy consumption of milling, it is desirable to improve the efficiency of this process. One alternative to reduce energy and material consumption while optimising production yield in mill operation is through balanced design and selection of liners. Over-design of liners leads to increased life but at a cost to grinding performance, a relationship which to date has not been studied closely. This paper provides a description of this process of liner life cycle optimization and presents initial results from the first of two life cycles being studied for a 32 foot (ft) SAG mill. The use of commercially proven high resolution laser scanning based liner shape information provided by the MillMapper® software correlated with well controlled site surveys at various points in the liner life was used as the basis for comparison. The survey data was modelled in JKSimMet to provide direct comparisons of mill performance. This potentially provides a methodology for the design of liners that maintain a favourable shape for the majority of liner life, yielding desirable production parameters such as lower specific energy consumption and higher throughput, while at the same time maintaining practical liner life cycles.

In mining and quarrying operations, electric motors can fail for a variety of reasons. Some failures are directly linked to demanding production requirements and contaminant-laden environments and, consequently, are difficult to prevent. A sizeable number, however, are caused by ?offline? factors that have nothing to do with production. These include inadequate or substandard motor repair practices and improper motor shipping, storage and installation. The fact that failures are at times attributable to repair- or rebuild-related errors and problems raises the stakes when selecting an electric motor repair provider. Teaming with high-quality electric motor shops can help a company reduce failures due to offline factors, improving motor reliability and cutting downtime costs. Regardless of location or annual revenues, the best motor shops have similar business cultures and share many of the same characteristics.

This report contains Bureau of Mines routine analyses of 492 samples of crude petroleum from 470 United States oilfields, each of which produced 2,500 barrels a day or more during at least 1 of the years 1946-56. The fields are listed alphabetically by State and field names in table 1, with information on the geographical and geological sources of the samples. Table 2 summarizes the general characteristics of the crude oils and analytical and computed data determined from the analyses. A previous report 4 contains similar analyses of 283 important United States oilfields; some of them are repeated in this report. Many fields for which analyses previously were published are represented by new analyses, which include data not previously reported. Refractive index nu and specific dispersion, ng minus nD divided by the density, for some of the distillate fractions are included in the analyses of 316 of the crude-oil samples. This is the first Bureau of Mines report on analysis of crude oils to contain such data, and their use in calculating hydrocarbon-type composition of the fractions is explained.

Energy efficiency is currently a significant area of interest due to the Eskom power situation, which led to severe power impacts to the PGM, and indeed whole SA primary industries, in early 2008. Anglo Platinum has focused on energy efficiency for a number of years, especially in the concentrator operational area. New comminution technologies have been aggressively developed, which have shown real metallurgical efficiency gains as well as significant energy efficiency and saving potential for Anglo Platinum?s total electrical consumption as the company expands into a growing PGM demand market. This paper illustrates this programme?s activities, potential and considerable achievements to date.

BHP’s Western Australian Iron Ore Operations (WAIO) move approximately 250 million tons of ore per annum. The magnitude of the constant changes to the terrain models along with the diverse output and presentation requirements of numerous stakeholders presents significant challenges for the geospatial team. This paper describes how the WAIO Survey team use a combination of technology and optimised workflows to capture, ingest, publish and access large data sets for diverse stakeholder requirements. Machine learning for processing of data and the use of web based systems to track and prioritise task allocation of resources will be discussed in detail, in addition to the changes to the traditional roles of surveyors from the use of automation and mobile technology.

"The IREDES1 Special Interest Group (SIG) for drill rigs has been active since its launch during MineExpo 2000 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. SIG for drill rigs is responsible for the development of an IREDES drill rig profile, including the exchange of production planning, performance, and quality reporting data between various kinds of drill rigs and the databases used by the operating mine. During 2001, a first draft of the drill rigs profile was jointly prepared by drill rig suppliers, mining companies, and third-party suppliers and reviewed during several SIG meetings. The profile for prototyping projects was released in mid-2002; the first official IREDES release was based on feedback received from these projects.In 2002, LKAB and Atlas Copco decided to carry out an IREDES prototyping project using the Simba L6C production drill rig. The goal was to verify the drill rig profile and identify potential problems prior to the official release. This was done by implementing the IREDES prototype version into LKAB’s production planning and Simba rig control systems. The Simba rig control system was designed to handle drill plan and logging information coming from the mine planning system. In parallel to this, the mine production system was adapted for drill plan export and logging data import in IREDES format.This paper presents the most recent results of the IREDES prototyping project. Results from late 2002 show that the basic architecture of the drill rig profile works and that a common language for data exchange, IREDES, will be a central requirement for future mine automation.As a result of the IREDES prototyping project, the IREDES standard was approved at the IREDES board meeting held at the 2003 CIM Annual Conference and Exhibition. Soon thereafter, IREDES compliant products, including drill rigs and mine production planning systems, were put on the market."

Various kinds of sediment-hosted polymetallic sulfide deposit are known on land in ancient marine sequences, many tending to be larger and more valuable than massive sulfide deposits genetically associated with volcanic host rocks. Often such deposits are attributed to subhalative or shallow sub-seafloor precipitation processes, and structural control by faulting is commonly evident. Apart from the famous but anomalous Red Sea metallic oozes and several NE Pacific sites (Middle Valley, Escanaba Trough, Guaymas Basin), however, modern analogs of the sediment-hosted polymetallic sulfide category are lacking. Some deposits hosted by volcaniclastic rocks, such as JADE (Okinawa Trough) and Suzette (Eastern Manus Basin) are strictly sediment-hosted, but their formation is associated with the igneous activity and they are better considered a variant of the more abundant volcanic-associated polymetallic sulfide deposits.

"INTRODUCTION Knowledge of the Phase relations of fluids produced from combination wells 4/ at the pressures and temperatures characteristic of production from natural reservoirs is essential to efficient recovery and refining practice. An accurate sample of the fluid from such wells may be prepared by mixing (in the proportions of the measured gas:liquid ratio) gas and liquid taken from the separator conditions of steady flow; and physical properties of the sample, at significant pressures and temperatures, may be determined with suitable laboratory apparatus for use in the solution of engineering problems. The results of study of sample so obtained and of mixtures of gas and liquid from the separator combined in other proportions are presented in this report. Attention was given in the study to the relationship between the physical properties of what may be regarded as the constituent materials - the gas and liquid taken from the separator - and the properties of mixtures of these constituents. Data obtained for the complete range of mixture Proportions are expected to provide a reference scale for the study of other combination-well fluids produced at different liquid:gas ratios."

The ubiquity of big data, internet of things (IoT), and smart devices is radically changing society; our personal lives are being tracked, digitally motivated through gamification, where information has become an addiction at all income levels, genders, and generations. These forces should not be held at bay in mining; rather, we should embrace and take advantage of this phenomenon to improve safety and productivity. It is time to rethink long-held conventions behind Fleet Management Systems, such as permanently mounted hardware, connecting through cables and Bblack boxes^, equipment centric rather than operator-centric, wireless requirements, minimal to no feedback to the operator, and high costs. We should also reconsider how we are collecting much of our safety, training, and preoperational forms on paper that then, must be entered into computer systems for compliance, and rarely if ever used in analytics, rather than entering the data directly into a digital device. Collecting safety and location data directly digitally also unlocks the information contained in safety forms and audits enabling new data mining and analytical approaches. Managing then gaining value from this new, greatly expanded mountain of largely unstructured data, requires the use of modern tools and approaches, such as gamification and big data, as well as skill sets, not traditionally available in mines. Furthermore, tablets can now provide a better user experience as well as new sensors when compared with traditional fleet management systems (Mining Magazine 2019, 2016, 2015), at a fraction of the cost, employing the extremely esthetic and engaging visuals derived from the video game industry. Real case studies of these applications of both technology and approach, such as gamification, show that these tracking technologies can bring high visibility and large amounts of data to even the smallest operations and the challenge of making use of the data can be facilitated through the application of gamification. As with our personal smart devices, these technologies are poised to deliver huge improvements in operator feedback, tracking, and performance management, at a much lower cost per unit.
