"The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids are compounds which can be isolated from plants and which exhibit a broad range of pharmacological activities. Perhaps the best known alkaloid of this group is tetrandrine (TT), a compound isolated from the root of a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Stephania tetrandra. It has been tested for its effects on the cardiovascular system, tumors, and the lungs. For example, tetrandrine has been shown to act as a calcium entry blocker in cardiac sarcolemmal vesicles (King et a/., 1988) and has been used in China as a treatment for angina and hypertension. Its possible effects as a tumor-inhibitory substance have also been investigated (Kupchan and Atland, 1973). In addition, there are several lines of evidence to suggest that it is a possible therapeutic agent for the treatment of silicosis. Yu et a/. (1983) have shown that TT inhibits the development of experimental silicosis in rats when it is administered orally after intratracheal instillation of quartz. Other studies have shown that the alkaloid inhibits the synthesis of collagen by fibroblasts and the formation of silicotic nodules in rats exposed to silica (Huang et al., 1981; Liu et al., 1983). In fact, tetrandrine has been used clinically in China as an antifibrotic agent and has been shown to improve both the appearance of chest radiographs and the measurements of diffusing capacity in patients with silicosis (Li et al., 1981).Since tetrandrine may have a potential use as a therapeutic agent for fibrotic lung diseases, its effects on various pulmonary cells and tissues should be studied. Alveolar type II cells are located in the alveolar regions of the lungs and are important because they are responsible for the synthesis and secretion of pulmonary surfactant (Dobbs et al., 1982; King, 1984), regeneration of the alveolar epithelium after lung injury (Kauffman et al., 1974), and metabolism of foreign compounds (Bend et al., 1985). Furthermore, in silicosis, for which TT has been suggested as a treatment, there are increased amounts of pulmonary surfactant produced (Dethloff et al., 1986a,b) as a result of increased rates of surfactant synthesis by type II cells (Dethloff et a/., 1989; Miller et al., 1988). Because type II cells play a critical role in maintaining normal lung function and because type II cells are affected in silicosis, for which 'TT has been used as a treatment, we studied the effects of tetrandrine on energy metabolism in these cells in vitro. Energy metabolism was chosen because it is a basic cellular function which is neces-sary for other cellular processes to occur. Since type II cells depend on mitochondrial metabolism for energy production (Fisher et al., 1980), we examined the effects of tetrandrine on cellular and mitochondrial ATP production and oxygen consumption. Additional experiments were performed in an effort to determine if intracellular calcium levels may be involved in the TT-induced effects. A preliminary report of those results has appeared previously (Ma et al., 1991)."

A DESCRIPTION of the block-caving system of mining as practised at the King mine of Asbestos Corporation, Limited, Thetford Mines, Que., was presented. at the Annual Meeting of the Institute held in Quebec city, in April, 1934. The paper was published in the Transactions of the Institute for 1934. There has now been recovered, by this method, one million tons of ore, and a review of experience indicates that the method was well planned and has been executed smoothly. In approaching the problem of selecting the type of mining best adapted to this deposit, the method had to be one which would be low in cost, use no wood, and not disturb the surface immediately bounding the ore-body on two sides. Prior to 1931, block-caving had been considered but rejected, as it en-tailed disturbance of the surface area which lay within a 45° angle of the lowest contemplated workings, if the practice of such mines as Ray, Miami, Inspiration, and Morency, where this type of mining has been used extensively, was followed. At these properties there have been mined large tannages at outstanding low costs, but an extensive surface area has been disturbed in each case. In some instances, townsites in the mining area have had to be abandoned, and dwellings, not considered worth moving, have been allowed to fall into the depression. A study was made of the principles involved in the various types of block-caving, the existing information on ground movement, subsidence, etc., also being carefully analysed. Toward the end of 1931, a plan was conceived whereby the country adjoining ground being caved might be held permanently in place and undisturbed. The success of such a scheme was essential to the application of block-caving at the King mine on account of property boundaries, the Quebec Central Railway right-of-way, and expense of moving buildings. Study of existing data on caving and movement of rock, caused by sub-surface excavations of sufficient unsupported area to result in failure of the backs, indicated, in practically every instance, that such movements followed certain definite laws of mechanics.

The term "tender tundra" is a myth---a well-developed myth, but contrary to the fact. Any area that supports herbivores must have a plant base to supply food, In Alaska, herds of caribou migrate and live north of the Arctic Circle. And, if there is enough growth in the moss and lichens and arctic grass to support a caribou herd, the "tender tundra" can heal after it has been disturbed by mining. Another myth is that Alaska is an ice box. Actually, many areas In the state---particularly the Interior---have a high agricultural potential. Nevertheless, the fact remains: whether it is reclaimed by advancing the productivity from forest to agriculture or is allowed to remain a wild-life habitat, Alaskan land will revegetate. Reseeding speeds reclamation, but left to nature, native species will reclaim the land whether it was disturbed by forest fires, roads, villages, or mining. In fact, it is impossible to find many of the old gold mining camps.

Develop an environmentally feasible method of mining shallow oil sands without removing overburden. Approach Oil sands are extracted through a single borehole by cutting into the sands around the borehole with a high pressure water jet, and pumping the resulting slurry to the surface. Although oil can be extracted from shallow fields by open-pit mining methods, this type of mining may create significant environmental impacts, including; (1) disruption of the surface, (2) accumulation of waste rock piles, (3) accumulation of tailings, (4) damage to the ground water quality, and (5) surface water pollution. The borehole mining system developed and successfully field tested by the Bureau of Mines offers a method for extracting oil from oil sand with minimal disturbance to environmental quality. (For examples of other applications of borehole mining, see Technology News Nos. 95, 63 56, and 48.) How It Works Prior to the start of mining operations, baseline conditions for ground subsidence and ground water quality are established at the test site so that the degree of subsidence and changes in ground water quality can later be determined. Oil sands mining is conducted using the Bureau of Mines borehole mining system. The borehole mining tool consists of a 12-inch-diameter pipe string and accessories capped with a three passage swivel terminated with a mining section. The mining section has an auger at the bottom. Four slurry inlet holes and an eductor are located above the auger, and a single cutting nozzle is located near the top of the mining section. The tool generates a high velocity water jet that erodes and slurrifies ores. The slurry is drawn into the inlet of the eductor which lifts the slurry to the surface where it is deposited into a slurry discharge sump. To detect evidence of subsidence, surveys of the land surface are made at regular intervals during, and until 30 days after, the termination of the mining operations. Samples of ground water from the borehole and two adjacent monitor holes are taken on alternate days during the mining operations, and are later analyzed to determine if any ground water contamination has occurred.

The primary objective of this program was to determine the toxic fume and fire hazard of materials used in the construction of mine stoppings and in the sealing and reinforcing of mine ribs and roofs. The materials investigated were: silicone, phenolic, and isocyanate-based rigid foams, as well as epoxy and acrylate mine sealants. Of the rigid foams tested, the X-156 urethane foam presented the greatest toxic hazard based on toxic load values hydrogen chloride was the main toxic species evolved by this foam. In 'lone of the isocyanate-based compositions was hydrogen cyanide the major component, but its contribution increased with temperature. The FS-24 urethane and Celotex Max-Seal isocyanurate foams had the lowest toxic load values, although these two foams have different applications for in-mine use. Of the two mine sealants tested, the latex /acrylic coating presented the greater toxic hazard with acetic acid being the main toxic species evolved.

Introduction During the past twenty-five years we have seen considerable exploration for oil on the plains of southern and east-central Alberta. This exploration has to some extent gone on in cycles, with periodic starts, stops, and occasionally some reversals. Each major attempt is usually supplemented by the application of some new method of exploration and, following each period of exploration, drilling tests are made. Whereas oil-bearing horizons are the ultimate objective of these explorations, the preliminary investigation frequently aims at a discovery of structure based on the long accepted belief that accumulations of oil and gas are to a marked degree structurally controlled. At the inception of this general exploration for oil, it was natural that attention should be directed to areas where there was surface evidence of deformation of the underlying strata, but, as the programme progressed, it was found that these surface manifestations of structure were often deceptive when attempts were made to project them to depth, to involve the deeper strata. Drilling of test wells was the only satisfactory method of obtaining exact information.

"Sensor based ore sorting is being rapidly adopted by the mining industry. The ability to boost mill feed grade by rejecting waste grade rocks early in the process has proven revolutionary for some operations.This paper briefly reviews the current position of ore sorting in the industry, as well as abridged results from specific operations such as Barrick, McEwen, New Gold, and two others. The paper also introduces the concept of “Profit Recovery™”, the measuring of recovery based on rock profitability rather than just metal content.IntroductionSensor based ore sorting is being rapidly adopted by the mining industry. The ability to increase mill feed grade by rejecting waste grade rocks early in the processing stage is proving to be revolutionary for some operations. These potential outcomes have been too invaluable to be overlooked by both producing operations and prospective projects, thus leading to a wide range of studies on ore sorting. In addition, the advent of ore sorting has also called for a new standard of recovery analysis. The answer to this is the creation of a new term and concept - Profit Recovery™.This paper evaluates the most recent results of ore sorting in the mining industry, and presents the results from five different mining operations. Additionally, this paper will discuss and evaluate the Profit Recovery™ of each of these operations. The goal of this paper is to address common concerns regarding ore sorting rejects and their actual impact on project economics.State Of The ArtOre Sorting is a sensor-based sorting and pre-concentration technology implemented before the processing stage that is used to reduce the amount of waste reporting to the mill feed. This technology can also be utilized to recover ore from previously uneconomic waste, as well as reduce the mill energy and reagent consumption (Tong, 2012). In greenfield projects, sensor-based sorting can further provide value by reducing processing capital costs. The decline of available high grade orebodies and decreasing head grades has further increased the attractiveness of pre-concentration, and subsequently ore sorting (Lessard et al., 2014).There are currently two notable types of sensor-based sorting: bulk and rock-by-rock. Bulk sorting consists of live, high tonnage sorting that can be installed on a scoop or on a conveyor belt with a diverter. Rock-by-rock is a selective sorting method that scans and sorts individual rocks on a conveyor belt, and rejects rocks using air jets or mechanical levers. With the sharp fall in commodity prices, the terms cost reduction and higher productivity have become subjects that are constantly addressed in the daily life of companies, since these factors represent a question of survival of the organizations. To achieve this, the search for continuous improvement of our processes in order to guarantee space in the market is a reality and necessity, so it is important that companies know their processes in detail and have the maturity to make decisions based on data and facts. Thus, this work aims to apply the Six Sigma methodology to investigate which are the variables that most influence the transportation process, carried out by large trucks, increasing their specific consumption of diesel, which is the second largest expense of a company. mining in the city of Mariana MG. The goal of the project was to reduce diesel consumption in the large transport fleet by 7.4%, from 0.32 l / t (average carried out from Feb / 16 to Jan / 17) to 0.30 by February 2018 , with an estimated gain of R $ 4.2 million. The results achieved exceeded the established target, reaching a 10% reduction in specific diesel consumption, totaling a projected real gain of R $ 6.4 Million, in addition to the reduction of 1,710.52 t of CO2 in the atmosphere.

The McDonald deposit is a volcanic-hosted epithermal gold resource that is estimated to contain 251,000 kg of gold in 375 Mt of ore at an average grade of 0.7 g/t gold. Phelps Dodge exploration geologists, working for the Seven-Up Pete Joint Venture, discovered the deposit in 1989. By the end of 1992, 494 drill holes for over 113,000 m of drilling, bulk sampling, soil geochemistry, geophysics, metallurgical testing, engineering, and environmental studies had been completed to support feasibility studies. The discovery of McDonald required vision, persistence, and commitment of everyone from the geologist on the drill rig to the senior management of the company.

INMETCO, a subsidiary of Inco Limited, is the only facility in North America that provides High Temperature Metals Recovery for nickel-, chromium-, and iron-bearing wastes. Since 1978, this process has prevented more than 775,000 tons of materials from becoming part of the nation's waste stream. The paper describes Inco's experience in metals recovery, traces the development and explains the operation of the High Temperature Metals Recovery Process, and examines the procedures and criteria used to determine whether spent catalysts meet process feed specifications. An overview of the current requirements for transporting spent catalysts is provided. The paper concludes with brief case histories of catalysts users employing High Temperature Recovery to manage spent catalyst.

INTRODUCTION THE problem of mechanization is one of the most vital in the minds of Alberta coal operators today. In these times of constantly increasing operating costs, any way of decreasing the cost of a ton of coal must be explored to the limit. There seems no better field for such effort than the successful application of power to the mining and loading of coal. We are fortunate in having neighbours to the south who have made .remarkable progress in recent times along these lines. Higher tonnages per man have resulted in higher wages to the employee and lower cost to the employer. It might seem that our problems could be solved merely by imitating our neighbours. Unfortunately, neither practice nor experience substantiate this conclusion. It is with the purpose of reviewing our accomplishments, as compared with practice in the United States, and at the request of the Prgoramme Committee for this meeting, that this paper is written. The Committee believes that such a general discussion and comparison may well lead to further advances in our mining methods. SUMMARY OF PRACTICE IN THE UNITED STATES A visit to the highly mechanized coal mines of the United States is always most instructive and encouraging.

"The term ""manjak"" is applied to a variety of bitumen or solid hydrocarbon occuring on the Island of Barbados, West Indies, and in Utah, Cuba, and Trinidad. The deposits on the latter island are found within a distance of three miles of San Fernando, the second largest town on the Island, and within three miles of the famous asphalt lake.In chemical composition, manjak is like asphalt. It is almost pure bitumen. Its melting point is, however, more than 4000F. whereas asphalt melts at 1000F. In composition, it consists of 80 to 90 per cent carbon, the balance being chief¬ly hydrogen, with a small quantity of sulfur. It resembles coal in appearance, is odorless, hard, and brittle. It is found in thin beds between layers of clay.The island of Trinidad is rich in this mineral resource. Its development has as yet hardly begun, and the exportations already made have been with the view of testing out the ma-terial. During 1918, exports to the United States were valued at about $3100, and in 1919, up to October 1, they totaled 41 tons, valued at $1900. Prior to 1900, manjak was mined on a small scale in Trinidad, but for various reasons, very little was done between 1900 and 1913. In the latter year, mining operations were resumed by the Trinidad-Tarouba Oil Development Company, of San Fernando. At the present time, there are five shafts, one of which has reached a 37 foot bed of manjak at a depth of 400 feet. Operations could be greatly extended if there were a greater demand for the material.It has not been found profitable to export manjak from Trinidad in the crude state as the price received, namely $35 per ton, hardly covers mining expenses. These are increased by the necessity for careful and thoro timbering on account of the clay formation.Compounds, made by combining manjak with mineral oil command fair local prices which have enabled mine operations to proceed at a profit. Experimentation is still in progress with different mixtures of manjak and oil for various purposes. The manjak, recently sent to the United States was for the purpose of ascertaining whether American oils would be more economical and useful for mixing with the manjak than the Trini¬dad oils. It is the plan to erect a plant very soon for the manufacture of a variety of manjak paints and compounds.Manjak is rapidly increasing in use, particularly in connection with the oil industry. It is produced in close proximity to the oil wells in Trinidad. It is boiled with oils at high temperatures and converted into compounds and paints for nearly every purpose where a preservative is needed, for example, on pipe lines, boilers, chimneys, and miscellaneous iron ware, machinery, etc. It is usually applied in the liquid state, hardening into a tough, rubberlike coating. It has low viscosity, and is not affected by ordinary heat. It makes an excellent insulating material and is impervious to both air and water. In hot and damp climates, like that of Trinidad where pipe lines quickly deteriorate, their life has been pro-longed for extended periods when painted with this material."

Since 1922 when the Bureau of Mines issued a report2 covering the slate industry in detail, changes in technology have taken place which have an important bearing on the industry. The present paper comprises a record of these changes. Though the value of slate, for roofing, structural, blackboard, sanitary, and electrical uses is generally recognized, it has many competitors. To meet this constantly increasing competition producers are promoting economies in manufacture, and improving processes, thereby lessening costs of production, and are placing on the market products of the highest possible quality, thus creating satisfaction and confidence on the part of the user. This endeavor to place the industry on a better basis, both as regards processes and products, is shown in the recent developments in technology which are presented herein. "Trials of automated technology at underground mine sites around the world have reported increased production and the potential for lower energy consumption. Autonomous mining eliminates a range of delays related to operator downtime and travel to the workface and facilitates continuous operation in conditions that are unsafe for workers. Automation also introduces complexities and safety hazards arising from equipment–personnel interactions; automated processes must be isolated from other stope-cycle–related activities such as production drilling, development, loading, and backfilling, poten¬tially requiring changes to the mine design to maintain an efficient and safe operation. Ontario has a diverse industrial mineral resource base including abundant resources of structural industrial minerals such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, clay, shale, limestone and dolostone. These resources are used in the production of aggregates, brick, metallurgical stone, fillers, lime, cement and other construction materials. The majority of the operations are in deposits of Paleozoic and Quaternary age in southern Ontario, close to the major markets. Province-wide, there were over 140 million metric tonnes of aggregates produced in 1985, approximately 115 million tonnes of which was produced in southern Ontario with the remainder being largely from Crown land in northern Ontario. The structural industrial minerals account for over 80% of the value of total industrial mineral production, with the remaining 20% of the value king accounted for by the non-structural minerals being led by salt which is produced in southwestern Ontario. A host of other non-structural industrial minerals are known but production is currently restricted to calcite, gypsum, quartz, talc, nepheline syenite and by-product metallurgical sulphur products (Fig. 1). Location and Market Area Major production is in the area closest to the large markets of urbanized southern Ontario and the northeastern and north-central United States. In general, with the abundant variety and widespread resources of industrial minerals and the large population within 400 miles of most deposits, the market offers great potential. Ontario's 9 million population accounts for about 35% of the entire gross domestic product of Canada of $476.361 billion dollars in 1985. This equates to about 113 of the nation's buying power being within a 200 km (125 miles) radius of Toronto. This major concentration of industrial and economic activity has resulted in a well developed industrial minerals industry fulfilling most of the structural industrial minerals demand in Ontario, as well as a subsidiary demand in neighbouring provinces and states.

Broken Hill South Limited's discovery of phosphate deposits in the northwest of Queensland in 1966 prompted intensive exploration which has proved phosphate rock in excess of 2,000 million tons at ten separate deposits.Systematic exploration for phosphate in Australia was initiated by the company in 1964. Early in 1966, an investigation of oil wells in the Georgina Basin in the Northern Territory and Queensland revealed widespread anomalous phosphate in early Middle Cambrian Beetle Creek Formation and Thorntonia Limestone. Phosphorites recognized in oil wells in the southeastern part of the Basin, Queensland, led to the discovery of the Duchess deposits. Exploration of the Beetle Creek Formation since 1966 has disclosed nine other sizeable deposits north of Duchess around the eastern margin of the Basin. The Lady Annie and the adjoining Lady Jane deposits, by reason of their location, 160 miles south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, are expected to be the first to be brought into production.Beneficiation testing and engineering investigations commenced in 1967. Transport between the deposits and various port sites in the Gulf of Carpentaria has been extensively studied and a slurry pipeline as a means of transport to a deep water island port, is now being investigated.

Novel flotation reagents were developed to improve the flotation of coarse particles. Laboratory tests conducted on an anthracite coal sample from Kyung-Dong Coal Company, Korea, showed that the reagents can successfully clean 2?3 mm top-size materials. Pilot-scale tests conducted on a 1.41 mm x0 coal gave substantially better results than those obtained using kerosene as collector. The pilot-scale test results were used to develop a flowsheet, in which the 1.41 mm x0 fraction is cleaned by flotation and the 4 x1.41 mm coal is cleaned by single-stage spirals. The performance of this circuit was compared with another flowsheet, in which the 0.5 mm x0coal is floated using the conventional flotation reagent, with the 4 x0.5 mm material being cleaned using two separate spiral circuits. The performance of the two flowsheets was compared by computer simulation. The results showed that the flowsheet consisting of the coarse particle flotation circuit can give substantially higher yield sat a given product grade. Introduction As the world economies continue to face an increased demand for natural resources to support growth in the established and developing world, the western mining industry has expanded its operations and funding of mineral developments into new and relatively unexplored regions of the world. Mining companies worldwide, in order to grow in a global economy, are now actively exploring and developing mineral resources in the emerging markets of South and Central America and most recently have expanded activities throughout Asia. South East Asia Resources (S.E.A. Resources) has recognized the vast resource potential offered by countries such as China, India and Indonesia, Asia's main driving forces of economic growth and has made a commitment to be actively involved in the area. These countries rich in mineral resources, represent some of the highly prospective and underexplored regions on earth. Their vast potential has been underestimated because of political reasons and overlooked as Central and South America still continue to be the focus of exploration for many mining companies. Most of these Asian countries have faced a prolonged period of political unrest and it has not been until recently that they have begun to enjoy a relatively stable political climate which has encouraged foreign investment, growth and economic development. These countries are in need of capital to develop their infrastructure and market economies. Their wealth in resources is one of the best methods to achieve their goals. Gold is usually one of the first targets to be extracted from developing economies. Equivalent-sized gold projects tend to cost less to develop and require less supporting infrastructure than base metals. These projects are easier to finance and, most important of all, tend to give a quicker return on investment than that offered by base metals. They also provide the economy with precious foreign exchange, international investment and the technology required to build the country. Following is a graph representing the global re-allocation of the total capital investment on the twenty largest gold projects now under construction with the total for those under construction in 1990.

Nowadays, small diameter tunnels are increasingly considered in pipeline projects as an alternative for sensitive crossings or when soil conditions limit the use of conventional pipeline installation methods like HDD. Safety concerns play a key role, especially for inner-city installations. Pipe jacked microtunnels and small segment lining tunnels can serve as casing tunnels if access is required during construction for the change of cutting tools in challenging ground conditions or for maintenance of the pipeline in operation. Small diameter tunneling solutions offer a high degree of flexibility for alignment design in terms of geology, length and radius.

This paper deals with the problem of efficiently selecting the most appropriate loading and hauling equipment for surface mines. Problems and factors that affect productivity and operating cost are identified. During the course of collecting the information for this study, mining companies and equipment manufacturers were interviewed to define their selection practices. The majority of mining companies prepare general specifications and ask the suppliers to mate those specifications to their product line. The mining company then evaluates various proposals on the basis of the best available deal. The following 'mines from western Canada provided information for this study: Coal Mountain, Line Creek, Quintette, Westar's Harmer mine from the Province of British Columbia, and Coal Valley, Gregg River, Highvale, Luscar from the Province of Alberta.
