STATISTICAL evidence shows that continued efforts made by Government and industry to make mining safer during the last two decades have had most favorable results. In the copper-mining industry an accident frequency of 146 per million man-hours worked in 1925 dropped 71 per cent by 1945 to 43. This downward trend was relatively consistent except for a high period in 1937 which was probably due to a resumption of large-scale operation with many untrained miners. The iron-mining industry showed a similar trend, but at the relatively lower accident frequency of 66, which dropped to 24 in 1945. The close relationship between the steel and iron-mining industries may be one reason for the lower accident frequencies, because the steel industry is noted for its greater recognition of the fact that safe working conditions are an important part of labor-management relations.

After a long struggle with an underground mine-fire and its accompanying evils, having experienced the discouragement of many retreats, the uncertain hope of varying advances, and the gratification of final success, I am tempted to give the members of the Institute some of the details of the fight. I do not write with the thought of treating a novel subject, but with the hope that some one as unfortunate as ourselves may be led by our experience to avoid our mistakes and to profit by our successes. The fire occurred on June 16, 1890. It was a calamity awful in its results, ringing the death-knell of thirty-one stalwart miners, bringing sorrow and desolation to many homes, and destroying in a few hours the work of years. While there have been a number of disasters in the history of American mining in which there was a greater loss of life and property, I know of none in which so simple a cause led to results so serious. A description of the mine, with the details of the accident, is necessary for a full understanding of the conditions existing at the time. The Hill-Farm-Parrish mine is in Dunbar township, Fayette county, Pa., about one mile from Dunbar station, on the Pennsylvania and Baltimore & Ohio railroads, about four miles south of Connellsville, nine miles northeast of Uniontown, and in the heart of what is celebrated as the Connellsville coke region. The mine is owned and operated by the Dunbar Furnace Company ; and all the coal produced is made into coke and used in the company's furnaces, one mile to the east. The mine is opened by two slopes, the HillFarm and Parrish, the latter known also as the Ferguson. The Hill-Farm slope is 2600 feet northeast of the Parrish. There are 150 ovens at the former and 70 at the latter slope. The Hill-Farm slope is 4100 feet in length, and the length of the Parrish at the time of the accident was 3700 feet. New discoveries of gas in the southern counties featured the petroleum industry in West Virginia during 194;. Drilling for oil increased slightly over 1944 and a small increase of initial production resulted. Out of 28 wildcats drilled, there were 16 gas discoveries and 12 dry holes. No commercial oil was found in the 28 wells.

Metallurgical evaluation of autogenous grinding of Anaconda's Berkeley Pit ores indicated that tonnage throughput increases, at a finer flotation feed size, were possible by converting autogenaus mills to steel ball mills. In addition, initial test work showed that the improved grind resulted in slight recovery gains in subsequent flotation processing.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) IT is recognized that, in all metallurgical operations, the greatest possible uniformity in all conditions is essential to the best results. It is the constant aim of metallurgists to secure this uniformity, and their success in this respect has been in many cases the cause of great advances in the metallurgical processes themselves. Of all such processes, the production of pig-iron in the modern blast-furnace is perhaps the most complex and the most difficult of control. Notwithstanding the great progress of recent years, there is still great difficulty in obtaining anything like uniform conditions and results in the manufacture of pig-iron. The reason is not far to seek. The ores vary in composition and physical properties, often carrying a varying amount of gangue material, unevenly distributed The coke may vary in composition, cell-structure, moisture, hardness, and other properties. The blast, the weight of which far exceeds that of any other constituent, varies in its moisture-content and consequently in its chemical composition ; and its temperature, by reason of the method of heating, is not uniform, but, besides varying from time to time with atmospheric and other outside conditions, has a maximum and minimum for every changing of stoves. Now, with regard to these variations, the modern demand for uniformity has been greatly aided. Opencast (quarries) and underground mines around the world use blasting methods to mine valuable ore. Traditional blasting systems use technologies such as electric delay detonator systems (developed in the 1950s) and non-electric detonator systems (developed in the 1970s) to initiate a detonation train to blast rock more effectively, and so retrieve valuable product more efficiently. However, the lack of precise control over blast timings with these approaches can result in undesirable outcomes such as significant flyrock, excessive ground vibration, uneven grade of rock and misfires (in which sections of the blast can remain unfired). The development of Electronic Initiation Systems (EIS), first used in the 1990s, introduced a higher level of control over the blast. These systems greatly reduce the negative issues associated with blasting. However, this precision introduces complexity, and with this complexity comes difficulty in demonstrating the predictability, safety and reliability of such systems.

There is no known, practical substitute for lead in the automobiles, communications systems, medical equipment and computers that Americans use every day. However, there are many who say lead should be stopped at its source -- banned. As America's largest lead producer, The Doe Run Company has ralized that it must do more than mine and reclaim lead efficiently and safely. It must also earn the public's consent to operate if it is to continue to be a viable business. LEAD - THE BRILLIANT PERFORMER: REFURBISHING AN IMAGE It's been an embarrassingly long time since I was a college student. However, I remember there was no course at the University of Missouri's School of Mines and Metallurgy that had anything to do with the public relations aspects of mining or, put another way, the politicization of mining. I haven’t perused the course catalog for Penn State’s College of Earth and Minerals Sciences. But I strongly suspect I wouldn’t find such a course there today, either. A statement by the chairman of one of the country’s largest chemical companies leads to the point I want to make. He described his business this way. He said, “We’re a public affairs company that just happens to produce and market chemicals.” Like chemicals, minerals and mining are politicized today. To the extent that we don’t understand that reality, we don’t understand that reality – and act on it – we’re less likely to survive in this business. Some of you may well be saying to yourselves, “This guy Zelms is an alarmist.” That’s fair enough. Because it is absolutely true that there’s n o known, practical substitute for lead today. And it’s also absolutely true that, knowingly or not, Americans use lead everyday. It’s in our automobile batteries. It’s an integral part of communications systems. High tech (and low tech) medical equipment contains lead. And lead is an essential component of computer and TV screens. But even with all these uses, lead has a negative image today. An image so negative that its very existence is threatened. If you doubt that, consider these two statements made in 1989. Statement one. “It is probably reasonable to argue that exposure is the single most important and critical environmental health problem in the U.S., and possibly also the world…” Statement number two. “Many of the uses of lead should be terminated. We need to go back to the ultimate source: that is, taking lead out of the ground and putting it into the product stream and we need to turn it off at the ultimate source. Not the approximate lead in gasoline, or lead in air, or lead in food. Go right back to the source and start cranking it down." (End quote.) Those are what I call strong statements. And they weren’t made by some celebrity spokesperson for the environment like Meryl Streep. Both these statements were made by Dr. Ellen Silbergeld, whose long list of professional and academic credentials includes: o Adjunct professor and research scientist at the University of Maryland Medical School and Johns Hopkins: o Chief toxic scientist and director of the Toxic Chemicals Program of the Environmental Defense fund; o and President of the Society for Occupational and Environmental Health. If Dr. Silbergeld were the only person making these kinds of statements, it would be one thing. But she’s not a voice in the wilderness, by any means. Also for those of you who say, well since there’s no known substitute for lead, how on earth could it be banned. This paper documents an effort to explain cutterhead torque behavior observed during slurry pressure balance TBM tunneling through soft ground on the Los Angeles Clearwater project. AI machine learning and mechanics model-based learning was used to characterize cutterhead torque behavior including the TBM operating and ground parameters that influence cutterhead torque. Also, key parameters were from the slurry circuit data, including fines content, in-situ density, pore water fraction and solids content were included. The paper details what was learned using these new data-driven approaches as well as limitations with AI machine learning.

"Real-time, on-stream analysis of the metal content of process slurries is an essential prerequisite for process monitoring and advanced control of mineral processing circuits. On-stream X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) sensors for base metal applications are available commercially and form the basis of many plant monitoring circuits. To date, these commercial technologies have been insufficiently sensitive to measure precious metals such as gold and platinum group elements, typically present at part-per-million (ppm) and sub ppm levels. CSIRO has developed a novel X-ray based technology, called UltraGold, which enables detection of gold in slurries on a real-time basis with a precision below 100 parts-per-billion. This technology is based on the use of advanced X-ray optics, extensive Monte Carlo computer modelling for analyser design, high accuracy X-ray spectrum fitting where the X-ray intensities are matrix corrected. In this paper, we will introduce this technology and discuss the results of a proof of principle study performed in the laboratory with plant slurries (tailings and concentrate) from an Australian beneficiation plant. Finally, we will discuss further planned improvements. As projected grades in (gold) mining around the world fall and several large-scale mines approach the limits of their economic reserves, this method can enable significantly reduced operating costs by rapid analysis to improve circuit efficiency and hence improve recovery significantly.INTRODUCTION This paper describes a study undertaken to explore the feasibility of applying CSIRO?s UltraGold XRF technology to the on-stream measurement of gold in process slurries. The provision of rapid, accurate information of gold grade in feed, tailings and concentrate streams would facilitate significantly improved process control and early detection of plant upsets, resulting in substantial cost-savings. CSIRO have patented X-ray fluorescence (XRF) techniques for the analysis of key elements in slurries present at part-per-million (ppm) and sub-ppm levels. Conventional, commercially available on-stream XRF instruments generally have detection limits in the tens of ppm range, precluding their use for analysis of elements like gold that are mined and processed at much lower concentrations."

At Tropicana gold mine (TGM), mine planning is completed from ‘one source of truth’ known as the Integrated Planning Model (IPM). The IPM is a block model which forms a core component of the TGM Mine Planning System – used for short, medium and long-term mine planning cycles, and for Mine to Mill reconciliation.The IPM was developed from a desire to consolidate long-term information contained in mineral resource and ore reserve models, with short-term information from the grade control processes, including grade control models and ore polygons.The IPM is informed initially by resource models, upon which the longer term budget and schedules are based. The IPM is routinely updated with grade control models and ore design information, providing increased confidence for short to medium term mine planning. In this format, the IPM also provides a framework for reconciliation of resource performance with grade control, mining actuals and mining schedules, and ultimately milling. As well as a means for analysing past performance through reconciliation, it has proven its worth as a predictor of variation and an input to successful schedule sequencing and change management. The IPM is a critical component of the TGM Mine Planning System, providing a centralised framework for short interval mill feed prediction through to life-of-mine (LOM) planning.Current development of the IPM is working towards incorporating Mine to Mill optimisation and real-time material tracking projects at TGM. If successful, the model will provide a truly powerful mine planning data source. Current development outlines a mechanism for tracking material from Mine to Mill, and for transferring mill performance data back to the IPM. Increasingly advanced material classification and mine planning, incorporating the multiple geometallurgical variables, will enable the mine to provide consistent mill feed products and result in a steady state and optimised mill.This paper outlines the vision, creation and benefits of the IPM at TGM. The chemistry of current or potential SO2 removal processes can be placed into four categories: (1) reduction, (2) Liquefaction, (3) direct dissolution, and (4) oxidation. Methods that involve reducing SO2 to elemental sulfur appear promising since this product can be easily handled, shipped, and stock- piled. Unfortunately, SO2 cannot always be reduced directly when other oxidizing agents are present. Thermodynamic data indicate that some oxidizing reagents will also consume reductant at the reduction temperature. A two- stage process can be applied to waste gases that contain excessive quantities of oxygen, nitrogen oxides, and water vapor. The best sorbent for the first stage appears to be a nonalkali or nonalkaline earth medium since this medium more readily releases the SO2 for reduction in the second stage.

The subchloride titanium was prepared by sponge titanium and titanium tetrachloride in the CaCl2 at 1173 K. The species were detected are mainly titanium dichloride, and the average valent in the melt are 2.05. The accurate equilibrium constants were obtained for the reaction 3Ti2+ = 2Ti3++Ti after the accurate activities of titanium chloride were evaluated with emf method, and the observed deviations from ideal behavior are discussed.

As part of the important program of promoting conservation and efficient utilization of petroleum, Bureau of Mines engineers are making studies of secondary oil-recovery projects throughout the United states and publishing reports setting forth the pertinent facts so that others may profit by the experience gained. This report presents the results of a study by engineers of the Bureau of Mines, stationed at Franklin, Pa., of secondary oil recovery in a part of the Cabin Creek field, Kanawha and Boone Counties, W. Va., where natural gas is injected into the reservoir to stimulate oil production. Most oil produced in the Appalachian region at present is obtained from stripper fields in which almost all natural energy has been dissipated. Secondary-recovery methods are used extensively in many oil-producing areas of New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky for recovering oil not produced by primary-production methods. The part of the Cabin Creek field reported in this study is shown in figure 1 and has been designated by the operator as project 4. In 1944 the developed area of the entire field was approximately 4,200 acres, and the area of project 4 was about 600 acres. In the developed area of the project the oil reservoir is in the Berea sandstone and occurs at 2,914 to 3,410 feet.

Coal and water are the two basic external feedstocks required for a coal gasification project. The WESCO project in northwest New Mexico, a joint undertaking of Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation and Pacific Lighting Corporation, will require about 25,000 tons of coal and approximately 7.5 million gallons of water each day to produce 250 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of pipeline quality substitute natural gas (SNG). The coal and water supply arrangement with Utah International, Inc. assures the project of an adequate supply of these two vital feedstocks.

Tungsten, silver, lead, zinc, and placer gold occur in the Cucamonga B RARE II area (no. B5174). A strata-bound, scheelite-bearing zone at the Blue Diamond prospect (fig. 1, no. 1) contains an estimated 16,000 tons (15,000 t) of identified, subeconomic resources averaging 0.16 percent tungsten trioxide (W03). There is a high potential for discovering additional tungsten resources at this property. The California-Hercules prospect (fig. 1, no. 5) ha; a mineral occurrence which contains an estimated 1,000 tons (900 t) of tactite averaging 1.3 oz silver per ton (45 g/t), 0.75 percent lead, and 0.72 percent zinc. Another occurrence, at the Blew Jordam Prospect (fig. 1, no. 4) has an estimated 100 tons (90 t) of tactite averaging 10 oz silver per ton (340 ,/t), 3.75 percent zinc, and 2.3 percent lead. There is a moderate potential for discovering silver, lead, and zinc resources at these prospects, which are in metamorphic pendants. There are a few lode gold prospects in the area (fig. 1, nos. 3, 11, 14) are on geologic structures which parallel the San Andreas Fault, northeast of the area. These deposits are not well exposed and have been historically unproductive. Placer gold in area B occurs locally in the beds of intermittent tributaries to Lytle Creek (fig. 1, nos. 10, 12, 13) in concentrations as high as $1.17 per cu yd ($1.53/cu m, at a gold price of $450 per troy oz). The deposits have no significant volume, but could be utilized for recreational panning and suction dredging. In the Cucamonga C RARE II area (No. C5174) placer gold occurrences locally contain as much as $1.23 per cu yd ($1.61/cu m). However, gravel containing the gold appears to be limited to stream beds, and does not occur in sufficient quantity to constitute resources. Recreational panning and dredging also may occur in this area.

A GREAT deal of work has been done at Britannia during the past three years in improving and standardizing rounds for development headings, and the results obtained have been very gratifying. The round which has recently been adopted as a standard for all drifts and cross-cuts has, in some instances, doubled the average length of break formerly obtained. It has also increased the footage of advance per labour shift and reduced explosives' consumption. At the present time, with a shortage of skilled labour, more control is necessar7 in directing the drilling of rounds. The use of a standard round has been o great assistance to the foremen and shiftbosses. NATURE OF GROUND Most of the ground encountered consists of a moderately silicified chlorite schist, known locally as G.M.S (green-mottled schist). It cannot be termed hard ground, because a three and one-half inch Leyner will drill at an average rate of twelve inches per minute. Due to the abrasive nature of the ground, the gauge of the steel wears rapidly and in most cases one set of steel is needed for each hole. The ground is not 'free breaking and holes must be spaced correctly to obtain a maximum break. DEVELOPMENT OF STANDARD ROUND FOR THREE-SHIFT OPERATION Late in 1940, a development programme was started involving 7,000 feet of drifting, 6 ft. By 7 1/2 ft. In cross-section, in two headings. Plans were drawn up to advance the headings on three shifts. Equipment used in the headings was as follows: D.A.35 Leyner?machines, Eimco Model 12B mucking machines, nine one-ton end-dump cars, one Mancha Little Trammer on the longest heading, 20-pound rail, 4-in. 15 compressed-air line, 15-in. Fan pipe connected to 5 h. P. Coppus fan. Diamond-drill cross-cuts, 16 feet in length, were cut every 250 feet. Switches were installed at these cross-cuts and they served as passing points for the cars. One siding seventy feet in length was cut in each heading at approximately the half-way point. The cycle of operations planned was to muck out, drill, and blast each shift. Previous performance in this type of ground indicated that a daily advance of 12 feet to 14 feet might be made. However, if a better type of round could be developed, an increased daily advance would be possible. A study of the time available for each operation in a net working shift of six and one-half hours indicated that the maximum depth of round that could be mucked, drilled, and blasted each shift would be six and one-half feet. When this maximum depth was decided upon, the next problem was to develop a satisfactory round. Due to ventilation difficulties and to the short net working shift, the whole round had to be blasted at one time. In other words, no blasting of the cut-holes could be done.

Alluvial gold was found in the Terawhiti area, West of Wellington, in the 1850s. This led to the discovery of reef gold. Periods of minor 'gold fever', company flotations, and mining activity occured between 1869 - 1973, 1881 - 1986, and in the late 1880s, with one final company active in 1911 - 1914. 1n the early 1980s, further field work was carried out. No viable mining operations resulted from any of this activity.

SOME months ago a Committee on Deep-level Mining was appointed [by the Government of the Union of South Africa] to consider the possibility of gold mining being carried on at a depth below 8,500 feet. The Committee consisted of Sir Robert Kotze (Chairman) , Mr. H. S. H. Donald (Government Mining Engineer), and Mr. H. R. Hill. The Committee has now made a report which was tabled in the House of Assembly on March 1st. The Committee reported that the tonnage of ore locked up in the deep level areas of the Central Witwatersrand is enormous, and in the 30 miles between Roodepoort and the East Rand Proprietory Mines has a value of about £200,000,000. The Committee says that, with good ventilation, the present system of wet mining, possibly with some modification and with the aid of refrigeration, may be carried to 10,000 feet, but that greater depths will require the adoption of dry mining. "A vigorous campaign of practical experiment into the possibility of dry mining should be initiated, and the Committee recommends to the Government the appointment of a committee of experts, consisting of representatives of the mining industry, the Mines Department, and the medical profession, with the Government Mining Engineer as chairman. The Committee suggests the provision of £30,000 for the first year for the investigations and experiments contemplated, which could best be carried out by an organization which might be styled 'The Rand Mining Research Institute' and constituted somewhat on the Jines of the South African Institute for Medical Research" . The Committee suggests that this committee of experts should arrange for experiments to be made with dry mining in one of the deepest mines, and investigate ventilation, refrigeration, support of workings, and the physiological problems connected with mining. "We emphasize the necessity of treating this whole question as one of importance and urgency. The investigations should be prosecuted with the utmost vigour and should not be delayed at any time for want of funds or for any other reason. If they are not done thoroughly and quickly, the whole scheme might just as well be left severely alone.

A mathematical simulation model has been devised to guide the layout of underground mine workings, drill stations, and drill holes that are established in order to search for tabular ore bodies. Developed and tested for elliptical ore shoots in fissure veins in the Galena mine, Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho, the model can also be applied to ore bodies contained within sedimentary beds (for instance, many types of uranium, copper, and gold ore bodies) or other tabular structures. Programed for a time-shared digital computer, the model contains both stochastic and deterministic variables. Stochastic or natural variables include the number of ore shoots and their sizes, orientations, locations, and values. Deterministic or controllable variables include (1) locations and costs of workings; (2) drill-station locations and costs; and (3) drill hole azimuths, inclinations, lengths, and deflections, if any. For various assumptions about the stochastic variables, the model is run while the controllable variables are changed deliberately. Thus, layouts are devised to determine the percentages of the total number of assumed ore shoots found at different costs. In order to choose among the various layouts, cost-effectiveness measures are calculated.
