The gold-silver deposits of the northern Primorye region are located in the eastern part of the East Sikhote-Alin volcanic belt, where the belt overlaps the Kema island-arc terrain of the Aptian-Albian age. There have been four deposits and numerous mineralization points found in the NE-trending Kema metallogenic belt that is about 1000 km long and 100 km wide. The known mineralization is of epithermal type, controlled by faults, and concentrated in quartz, quartz-fluorite-adularia, and, less commonly, sulfide-quartz vein systems hosted by the Upper Cretaceous-Lower Tertiary volcanic rocks. The vein systems extend for hundreds meters along strike, varying from tens centimeters to 50-60 meters in width. They are surrounded by wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration containing some gold-silver mineralization for which the commercial value was not studied during the early exploration. The ore bodies contain from 1 to 50-80 ppm of Au and from 1 to 1000 ppm of Ag. Gold is native, associated with quartz, and represented by particles from tens of microns to 1 mm in size. Silver occurs in native form as a constituent of argentite, pyrargyrite, stephanite, and other sulfosalts. The test work carried out for three vein systems 20 years ago showed that gold might be easily and almost completely recovered from the ore by cyanide treatment. The paper describes the geology and mineralogy of the deposits, Salut and Primorskoye, that are the most studied properties of the Kema belt. It also presents the data available on disseminated gold-silver mineralization in stockworks, altered explosive breccias, and wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration. This mineralization should be explored for possible exploitation as large open-pit, heap-leach deposits.

"TiN films have been deposited on various substrates by a novel reactive plasma technology. In this process, a nitrogen source (NH3 or N2) and TiCl4 are reacted in the jet of a plasma torch, and are deposited onto a substrate forming TiN films at a high growth rate ( > 2µm/min). It was found that the process parameters strongly affect the microstructure, thickness, density, and growth rate of the TiN films. These parameters include source of nitrogen (NH3 or N2, N/Ti ratio, temperature of substrate, and spray distance. In general, it was found that thick and dense coatings were deposited when the N:Ti ratio was kept low, and the substrate temperature was high. Also, for the series of conditions investigated, NH3 was found to give much better results than N2•. The limitations and advantages of this technique are also discussed in this paper.IntroductionTiN is an extremely hard material and is used in many wear applications, particularly as a protective coating on cutting tools to extend their Iife(1.2). Owing to its excellent chemical stability, TiN is also frequently used as a diffusion barrier in the electronics industry for sub-micron Al/TiN/Si ohmic contact systems (3) or as a coating on high-temperature resistant alloys in gas turbine applications (4), based on its good resistance to oxidation. Other applications include decorative coatings in the jewelry industry, and specialized applications such as solar energy absorbers and transparent heat mirrors(5).TiN films can be deposited/formed using various techniques. The main techniques of deposition are CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) and PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition). Each of these techniques can have many variations in equipment characteristics, reactants as well as a range of process parameters (pressure and temperature). In the CVD process, TiN is generally deposited onto a heated substrate where a chemical reaction takes place. The reaction can be one of reduction(6) (e.g.: TiCI4 + 0.5N2 + 2H2 --> TiN + 4HCI), of thermal decomposition(7) (e.g. decomposition of titanium dialkylamide), or of displacement (e.g. TiCI4 + NH3 --> TiN + 3HCI + 0.5CI2)' The displacement and reduction reactions are the most common."

The question, Who won the war?, has been the text for innumerable newspaper, and magazine articles, the answers running from "bread and butter" to "poison gas," in a material sense, and from the "Y. M. C. A." to the "boys in the front lines," humanly speaking. Personally, I think the margin by which success was secured was so narrow that none of the complex, interdependent factors could have been .spared, and that, as Admiral Sampson said after the battle of Santiago: "There is glory, enough for all." But if any one human factor can be said to have been absolutely indispensable, I think all will agree that it was the engineer. The engineer, as a rule, is a modest fellow, so modest in fact and so averse to publicity of any kind that, referring to him as a class, he was hardly occupying the place he should in public estimation before the war. By way of illustration, in the early history of a mine in Bisbee, the chief owner was also the proprietor of a saloon and spent most of his time there. When asked why he did not pay more attention to the mine, lie replied: "Oh! I can hire a boy to look after that; it takes a man to run this bar." Comparisons of the position and pay of engineers with other occupations are sometimes made to show that the engineer is not getting all that he should, considering the time of preparation and the qualifications required. Perhaps at least a part of the cause may be his aloofness from many of the practical affairs of everyday life. Whether he won the war or not, the part played by the engineer has certainly placed him on a sort of pedestal in the public estimation at present and it is very desirable to keep him there and maintain the position he has made for himself.

The mining industry will face numerous challenges over the next 10–15 years as new deposits are likely to be more remote and lower grade and existing deposits will be mined deeper. As a result, mines and mining contractors operating in deep-mine conditions will need to focus on the quality of drilling and blasting to minimise unnecessary waste rock excavation to keep costs at an acceptable level. In addition, increased demand for improved safety and operator ergonomics will set greater demands on original equipment manufacturers of mining equipment. Finally, difficulties finding a skilled and experienced workforce, particularly in remote mine locations, have already negatively impacted mines’ ability to achieve high productivity and low operating costs.This paper introduces techniques and shares practical experiences in increasing productivity and reducing the costs of excavation in underground face drilling. The paper uses Sandvik’s new DD422i automated mining jumbo as an example of the type of equipment needed to deliver the features and corresponding benefits for future mine development. The search. for massive sulphide orebodies is steadily being extended to greater depths as well as expanding outward into the large portion of the earth's surface where the sulphide bodies are deeply weathered. Massive sulphide orebodies are generally not large in dimensions. They are not like disseminated type sulphide bodies that form large ground exploration targets that can be detected at greater and greater depths simply by increasing the geometrical spacing between the geophysical transmitter and receiver. In¬creasing the transmitter-receiver spacing with massive sulphide bodies eventually "waters down" the anomaly from the body until it disappears into noise. If high surface conductivity is present, as is common in areas of deep weathering, the problem is compounded by the increasing response of the surface layer, as the receiver-transmitter spacing is expanded. The search to greater depths has important implications other than just detection of the orebody. Drilling costs are increased and the probability of missing the target are increased. Missing an orebody is an expense that is difficult to evaluate in dollars per line mile of survey especially since one does not know the value of what was missed. A ground Pulse EM method has the capabilities of solving the problems of deeper exploration particularly in areas of surface weathering it can attain deep penetration without large coil spacings, it also provides information from a complete range of frequencies. The method has other operational advantages since it is free of geometrical restrictions as to coil alignments and can operate in areas of high power line noise.

The principle objective of the research effort described herein was to identify as rapidly as possible a practical trapped miner location system. Much effort has been expended in the past on the development of a highly sophisticated seismic location system [1] for trapped miners. Field tests of this system have shown that the location accuracy is limited by a combination of seismic velocity anomalies, timing errors, and in general by the relatively weak nature of the signals received at the surface. It was first felt that similar propagation anomalies would be experienced by electromagnetic systems, but to a greater extent than the seismic. However, preliminary tests performed by Westinghouse on the Operations and Maintenance Program, Contract No. H0210063 in 1971 and 1972, indicated that an electromagnetic solution to the location problem may be more feasible than a seismic solution. Thus a more concentrated effort was launched in 1972 and 1973 to more completely determine the feasibility of electromagnetic location systems for trapped miners. Two different approaches to the location problem were undertaken on this program: (1) A pulsed electromagnetic system was developed by the Special Systems Division of Westinghouse in Baltimore, and (2) a Continuous Wave (CW) System was developed by Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory (WGL) in Boulder, Colorado. Part I of this report will deal only with the development and results of CW Location System developed by WGL. The CW Location System was field tested at three eastern coal mines and at one western hardrock mine. The maximum overburden depth penetrated during these tests was 990 feet at the Robena No. 4 mine near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. The earth conductivity at this mine was measured to be 1. 1X102 mhos/m, which combined with the deep overburden make this mine representative of expected worst case conditions for a coal mine EM location exercise.

"SynopsisCo-pyrolysis of four biomass samples (hardwood chip, softwood chip, pinewood chip, and sugarcane bagasse) with an inertinite-rich medium rank C South African coal was investigated. Proximate and ultimate analyses of the chars prepared using a heating rate of 10°C/min up to 1100°C in a nitrogen atmosphere were used to compare the properties of the biomass and the coal chars. Similar gross calorific values (28.5–29.1 MJ/kg) for the woody biomass-coal blended chars were observed, which were slightly higher than that of the coal char sample (26.5 MJ/kg). CO2 surface areas of the chars of the woody biomass samples (328.1–329.4 m2/g) and of the blends (238.5–271.5 m2/g) were higher than that of the coal char sample (94.2 m2/g). Thermogravimetric (TG), differential thermal analyses (DTG), and calculated weighted averaged TG curves indicated that the influence of the biomass on the pyrolysis rate of the coal is small and vice versa. The CO2-producing reactions of the coal were slightly enhanced during co-pyrolysis.IntroductionCoal utilization has led to rising concerns about adverse impacts on the environment (global warming) caused by toxic gases (H2S, SOx, NOx, and CO2) and remaining waste. Biomass is considered to be CO2-neutral with regard to the greenhouse gas balance, and is regarded as a renewable source that assists in reducing CO2 emissions when compared with coal (McGowan, 1991; McKendry, 2002). Biomass currently makes up approximately 14% of the world’s energy sources (McGowan, 1991; McKendry, 2002). Coal combustion and gasification are prominent processes in South Africa (in producing synthesis gas and energy) due to the abundance of coal in the country. Some of South Africa’s coal resources are, however, high in ash content and also are inertinite-rich, which renders them more difficult to use industrially than vitrinite-rich low-ash coal (Jeffrey, 2005; Strydom et al., 2011). There is a need to investigate the properties and behaviour of the inertinite-rich high-ash South African coals and especially their interaction with local biomass sources. The gasification process occurs through various stages, of which pyrolysis of the char residue forms an integral part (Bunt and Waanders, 2009). Currently, particular interest is shown in the co-utilization of coal and biomass to produce synthesis gas via the gasification process (Usón et al., 2010; McGowan, 1991; McKendry, 2002). Investigating the co-pyrolysis of the South African coal and local biomass material is thus the first step in evaluating the use of local biomass sources for co-gasification purposes."

The trend initiated in January 1936, of stabilized gasoline prices, increased demand and extraordinary drilling activity, continued in California during the year 1937. Crude prices were maintained during the year at the highest level since September 1930. Wildcat activity with resultant new discoveries and development of proven acreage were greater than in any year since 1928. Many fields in California in former years have been produced at full capacity, with consequent loss of reservoir energy, but at the present time continued activity is maintained to develop adequate reserves, so that production in these fields can be taken at a rate to correspond with good operating practice. Naturally, this good operating practice will be influenced to some degree by gas outlets and, in certain instances perhaps, by oil outlets. In any event, these last two controlling features will result in favorable rather than detrimental operation. In fields producing from great depths, ultimate production will be practically limited to the flowing and compressor life of the well, since there is as yet no economical method for pumping wells below depths of approximately 7000 ft. Experience has shown, however, that such pumping difficulties will be overcome and that production secured by pumping will add some to reserves established on the flowing life of the wells. California continued to operate under voluntary curtailment, but with unlimited transfers of allowable between various fields. Even though there was at all times considerable production above the Umpire's established quota, a constantly increasing demand reduced storage during the year. This increasing demand was due mainly to the rapid rise in Pacific foreign shipments from May to September. It is questionable, however, whether this favorable condition will be maintained over a prolonged period. (See Fig. 1.) The purpose of this study was to investigate the dry grindability of calcite powders in a vertically and horizontally orientable laboratory batch type stirred mill. The experimental results were evaluated using stress intensity analysis. The performance was also compared in terms of mill orientation. The results showed that the d50 values decreased with increasing stress energy down to a certain point and then increased for both milling orientations. Even though the optimum stress energies for both vertical and horizontal orientations were in the range of 1*10−3 to 5*10−3 Nm at 750 and 1500 kJ/kg energy consumption, the product size was finer for the horizontal orientation at the same stress energy value. Additionally, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to compare mill orientation (vertical vs. horizontal) for the same mill and under the same test conditions.

Portals to access underground mines are important infrastructure and their design requires careful consideration. Portals are generally expected to last for the life of the mine. Typically, the exposure of personnel and equipment is high, with many hundreds of movements through the portal per day. Consequently, the risk associated with geotechnical instability must be extremely low. Portals are often established from a boxcut. In areas where the weathering profile is well developed, the design and execution of the boxcut can involve significant effort, with the objective of minimizing the volume of the boxcut, whilst ensuring that conditions at the design depth are suitable for establishing a stable portal. Properly designed site investigations are a critical part of this process. Currently available portal design guidelines have not been updated for decades, however the equipment and ground support systems have changed significantly in recent years. Many mine portals have since been constructed in a relatively short time frame with success, often in challenging ground conditions using some of the more modern approaches to ground support. This is beneficial because delays in establishing a portal will generally delay other critical path activities, and lead to cost overruns.

I held it, waiting for the second part, which he had promised to forward soon, so that I might submit the whole to some of his former professional associates, and advise him of their criticisms and suggestions before offering his work to the Institute. But, five days before the second part reached me, I received by telegraph the news of Mr. Emrich's sudden death. The paper has therefore not had the benefit of such a revision by the author as might have made it in some respects clearer and more complete. Nevertheless, I believe that experts in the branch of metallurgy with which it deals will find it both original and suggestive.-A. EILERS. I. PARTIAL REFINING IN THE ANODE-FURNACE. During my connection with one of the large New Jersey copper-refineries, and probably before that period, from 15 to 20 per cent. of the copper-bullion received was the very foul, leady blister-copper produced from lead blast-furnace matte. It had been customary to mix a small part of this blister with each charge of purer pig-copper, in the effort to dilute it as much as possible before casting into anodes; but tank-house conditions were such that I was led to try making entire furnace-charges of this blister, and refining it as much as possible in the furnace-afterwards casting to anodes and refining electrolytically, in tanks and solution separate from the main bulk of the purer copper. In making this experiment, notes were made, for several furnace-charges, of everything thought to have a bearing on the question, and some interesting facts were brought out, both in the furnace-working and afterwards in the tanks.

Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd (HPPL) drilled two deep diamond stratigraphic holes (ECD0001 and RHD0296) within the eastern Fortescue Valley in the Pilbara of Western Australia. Located south of the Roy Hill Iron Ore project, the holes aimed to define the stratigraphy of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (MMIF) of the Chichester Range and its south-dipping extensions below recent cover. Previous attempts to define the MMIF of the Chichester Range have resulted in differing interpretations due to the data available at the time.The unweathered MMIF beneath the Fortescue Valley in the HPPL drill holes is characterised by dolomitic carbonate interbedded with stilpnomelane-rich shales, chert and banded iron formation (BIF) with hematite staining. This intersection equates to ~75 m of carbonate-facies iron formation, as opposed to the ~230 m thick oxide-facies BIF and shale sequence encountered south of the Fortescue Valley.Various detailed geological core analyses and interpretations from ECD0001 and RHD0296 were integrated with regional diamond and reverse circulation (RC) holes from across the Fortescue Valley. Interpretation of the data indicates that the eastern Fortescue Valley MMIF represents a thinned thickness sequence of the whole formation. The MMIF of the Chichester Range and Fortescue Valley has gamma logs that correlate strongly in parts to the type section used for MMIF south of the Fortescue Valley. Therefore, the outcropping MMIF in the Chichester Range represents an eroded equivalent of the æreducedÆ thickness MMIF observed in ECD0001 and RHD0296.Data from deep diamond drill holes across the valley, from the Hamersley Basin to the Carawine Basin, were correlated. The correlation shows that the depositional site of the MMIF in the HPPL diamond drill holes is consistent with a proximal ramp setting, in which iron-rich shales wedge up-palaeoslope and shelf-derived carbonate turbidites wedge down-palaeoslope. Not only is it the occurrence of these shales that define the MMIF, but they also determine the northward potential to develop orebodies, as they are the source of iron from which iron-rich oxides and carbonates of metamorphic or diagenetic origin form.CITATION:Hurst, J, KrapeP, B and Hawke, P, 2013. Coal mining is recognised globally as a hazardous activity, and as a result operates under high levels of regulatory and public scrutiny while managing a workforce operating in a high-risk environment. Mining companies have developed sophisticated risk assessment procedures, management systems and personnel competency requirements that facilitate the safety and health of employees, and Australia is a world leader in coal mining safety and health.RISKGATE is an Australian Coal Association Research Program funded online platform that delivers broad cross-industry knowledge about current practice in the identification, assessment and management of coal mining risk. Centennial Coal has engaged with the RISKGATE program, managed by the University of Queensland’s Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, since its inception in 2010, and contributed topic experts to many modules, including underground topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, and inrush).In 2013, Centennial Coal experienced significant unexpected strata failure at the Mandalong mine without any personal injury or fatality. This paper presents a case study in the application of RISKGATE to management of this unwanted event, the steps that were implemented, the information that was sourced and the contribution that RISKGATE made to the final outcomes. In this comprehensive study of the use of wood products in coal mining, a sample of over 220 mines provided data by questionnaire. Wood use per ton of underground coal was found to vary substantially by mining process and region. In the Eastern Coal region, 1.6 board feet of wood was used per ton of coal, wel above the 0.6 board feet usage per ton in the West. The kind of timber used varied also by Region. Hardwood use is about 40 times greater than softwood in the Eastern Region. There, hardwoods are plentiful, relatively cheap and strong. In the West where softwood forests predominate, softwoods were 2-1/2 times more common in mine wood use than hardwoods. Nearly 80 percent of the wood used in underground coal mines is used in cross bars and props. Nearly 54 million cubic feet of wood products were used in coal mining in the sample year 1979; about twice as much going to underground mines as surface mines. Wood requirements for mining were projected to 2030 for a range of three oil price scenarios. Much greater wood use will be required for greater coal output.

AVAILABLE data for the first nine months of the Year indicate that accident occurrence in metal mining was well on its way to an all-time low for 1939. However, the relatively rapid pickup in mining production in the fall will be likely to boost both accident occurrence and also accident rates. Results of the National Safety Competition for 1938, the fourteenth of its kind conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, were published in August, 1939. W. W. Adams, statistician of the bureau, states that "with 345 mines and quarries competing, more than in any previous year except 1931, the contest revealed low accident rates at many of the enrolled plants and, which is even more remarkable, it revealed 113 mines and quarries at which no lost- time accidents occurred during the con- test year." The National Safety Competition provides a means whereby mines and quarries may engage in active competition to stimulate their safety programs. Companies in the contest can compare their records with those of similar plants operating elsewhere and thereby determine to what extent their safety programs are successful. The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association gave over 150 awards for safety performance in the mineral industries in 1939 and a remarkable phase of these awards was the considerable number given to individual miners who had worked fifty or more years without sustaining a lost-time accident.

"The current paper presents the results of a study designed to explore the types of practices that are fundamentally important to developing and maintaining comprehensive risk-based health and safety management systems (HSMS) in mining organizations. Eighteen practicing health and safety (H&S) executives, managers, and professionals from a variety of mining commodities were asked to assess the fundamental importance of 20 distinct elements and 133 different practices assembled from a review of several HSMS consensus standards. The research approach assumes that developing and maintaining a robust HSMS requires unwavering attention to activities designed to either: 1) directly contribute to a risk management system’s plan-do-check-act cycle; or 2) build an organization’s internal infrastructure without which the cycle cannot be sustained. The results of this study suggest that the following areas require consistent focus and attention: Leadership Development; Accountability; Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Development; System Coordination; Culture Enhancement; Behavior Optimization; and Risk Management Studies. Each element and its corresponding top-ranked and top-rated practices are discussed.INTRODUCTION Since the time of the Industrial Revolution, occupational health and safety (H&S) management has been a topic of practitioner thought and academic inquiry (1). In the U.S., decades of regulation and research have resulted in a surplus of prescriptive information (techniques, tools, approaches, standards, programs, practices, policies, etc.). With an abundance of such information, a simple H&S solution to address a problem in the U.S. mining industry may seem straightforward. Counter to this assertion, however, some evidence suggests that the abundance of information may create complexity and cause confusion in the minds of organizational leaders and H&S managers, ultimately discouraging the voluntary pursuit of a sound approach (2). In line with this perspective, in 2006 the U.S. National Mining Association (NMA) formed an independent commission to examine H&S management issues within the mining industry. The findings of the commission called for the mining industry to adopt a risk-based management paradigm. In the presentation of its findings, the commission stated that “…every mine should employ a sound risk-analysis process, should conduct a risk analysis, and should develop a management plan to address significant hazards identified by the analysis” (3). Pyrite ore is one of the main raw materials in the production of sulfuric acid. For a long time, the raw material containing the pyrite, which is used to produce sulfuric acid, generally contains S only 32%~45%. A plenty of residue from the sulfuric acid production contains 40%~50% Fe and 1%~2% S. Some of the residue also contains Cu, Pb, Zn and other harmful elements like As, thus it pollutes environment seriously and is solid waste. The research on comprehensive utilization of the residue has been made by many scholars. Through the study, the residue can only be used to pro-duce iron concentrate and the iron oxide red pigment. But because of the complex techniques, the low recovery, the low grade of iron concentrate , high sulfur in iron concentrate, causing second waste residue and the environmental pollution, the residue is mainly used as an accessory material in the production of cement, and is of a low value. Therefore, the iron resource in pyrite has not been used efficiently until now. In the paper, the flotation condition test, the flotation open circuit test and the flotation closed circuit test to produce high-purity pyrite concentrate with the low-grade pyrite ore in oceanic ore deposit have been carried on. Flotation reagent scheme of sulfuric acid used as activator and butyl xanthate as collector is determined. After four times depth cleaning, high-purity pyrite concentrate containing 52.82% S, 44.29% Fe, and only 2.89% impurities has been obtained. The S recovery is 99.13%, and the Fe recovery is 96.00% in the high-purity pyrite concentrate. The oxidizing roasting depth desulfurization experiment of the high-purity pyrite concentrate has been conducted. The results show that the Fe grade in the residue obtained is 68.58%, the content of S is 0.25%, the content of P is 0.0084%, the content of As is 0.0065%. The residue is a kind of high-quality iron-smelting raw material. Based on the above experiments, the industrial experiments on producing high-purity pyrite concentrate with the low-grade pyrite ore, and producing sulfuric acid and iron concentrate with high-purity pyrite concentrate have been done. The results indicate that the high-purity pyrite concentrate with the S grade of 51.24%, the Fe grade of 44.15% has been obtained. The iron concentrate obtained with 65.73% Fe and 0.23% S is a sort of high-quality iron-smelting raw material applied to the production of steel and iron smelting. Through the experimental study, the sulfur and iron resources in the pyrite ore have been recovered and utilized efficiently.

"The Orenada Zone 4 deposit is a small vein-type gold deposit occurring directly within the Cadillac Break southeast of Val d' Or in southeastern Abitibi Sub province. Mineralization is hosted by the Piche Group which, on the Orenada property, consists of talcchlorite- carbonate, chlorite-carbonate, and sericite-chlorite schists, derived from ultramafic volcanic, mafic igneous, and intermediate to felsic volcaniclastic rocks, respectively. All these rocks have been carbonatized.Rocks of the Pichi Group display a strong east-west, subvertical S1foliation, which is superimposed by asymmetric, intrafolial F2folds with shallow to moderate plunge to the east and to the west. F2folds are accompanied by an S2, subvertical axial planar cleavage, and are interpreted to result from dextral transcurrent shearing along sr.The Zone 4 deposit occurs within a large F2 fold, 60 m wide and plunging at 45 to the east, down to a depth of at least 300m. The auriferous zones consist essentially of zones of closely spaced, parallel quartz-tourmaline-albite-carbonate-arsenopyrite veins concordant to Sr these veins have been folded by the large F2fold and may pre-date the folding. A few discordant quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins, post- dating the F2 folding, also contain gold. Wallrocks adjacent to concordant veins have been carbonatized, albitized and contain significant amounts of tourmaline and arsenopyrite, with which gold is intimately associated.The Orenada Zone 4 deposit is a unique example of a deformed vein- type gold deposit, and exemplifies one of several types of association of lode gold deposits with folds."
