Organizational development that attempts to simultaneously deal both with training and with job design parameters as they relate to mine health and safety, productivity, and quality of life is one of several areas of research that the Bureau of Mines is pursuing. The Bureau sees potential in this particular effort for reducing accidents and injuries, improving worker satisfaction and health, and increasing productivity.

The waste rock and tailings backfill into the mined-out areas are the most effective method for solving the environmental pollution and surface disasters for nonferrous metals mines. In practice, the success and availability of backfill operations are dependent on the slurry fluidity and the strength properties of cement backfill. The transport of the slurry through the pipeline to the designated backfilling area relies on its eximious flow properties, while the appropriate strength of the filling body ensures the safe operation of the stope. In this paper, the effects of cement and aggregate types on the slurry fluidity and strength characteristics of cemented backfill are studied in detail, which are often ignored in other pieces of literature. Diffusivity is used as an indicator to evaluate the slurry fluidity. Various slurries whose concentrations ranging from 70%, 73%, 75%, 78%, and 80% are made with different aggregate ratios and cement-sand ratios are tested. It has been shown that slurry fluidity is inversely related to its concentration, but 78% is the “stopping point” for the deterioration of fluidity. The addition of rod-milled sand improves or worsens the cemented backfill (CB) strength depending on the amount of rob-milled sand. The uniaxial compression experiment results on 216 CB specimens produced by different combinations of influencing variables showed that CB specimens made from cement with superior mechanical properties have a higher uniaxial compressive strength (σucs). It has been also found that the effect of aggregate ratio on the CB strength is not singular, but works in conjunction with the curing time and the cement-sand ratio. The longer the curing time and the higher the cement content, the higher the CB’s σucs. To avoid the time-consuming and costly problem of obtaining the strength of the CB from indoor experiments, an SVR model capable of predicting the uniaxial compression strength of CB specimens is proposed, which is optimized by genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The results of the three performance indexes (MAPE, MSE, and R2) show the superior performance of the GA-SVR and PSO-SVR models and the agreement of the predicted results with the experimental results, which indicate that these two models can accurately predict the σucs of CB.

"INTRODUCTION The investigation of the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes owned by the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. and the study of methods for eliminating these hazards, conducted by the Bureau of Mines, the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. since 1929, was continued during 1933.From May and through December 1933 these tests were supplemented by a study of the manholes of the New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the Special Service Department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin, vice president of the Boston Consol¬idated Gas Co.The procedure of sampling manhole atmospheres and of shipping the samples to Pittsburgh was the same as that used heretofore. In previous reports the relative explosibility of the samples was calculated by adding the percentages of the illuminants, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, and ethane, dividing the total by 6.5, and multiplying by 100. Experience has shown that the factor 6.0 is more nearly correct; therefore, this has been used in calculating the relative explosibility of all the samples listed in appendix A and B of this report. Abstract-The Campo Morado precious-metal-bearing, volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits occur in a lower Cretaceous, bimodal, calc-alkaline volcanic sequence in a major northerly trending belt in the Guerrero Terrane in northeastern Guerrero, Mexico. During upper Cretaceous to Early Tertiary greenschist-facies regional metamorphism, the rocks were deformed strongly into a northeast-verging fold-and-thrust belt. Three later stages of weak deformation were dominated, respectively, by kink folds, broad warps, and extensional faults. Most deposits occur in the upper part of a sequence of felsic flows and heterolithic volcanoclastic rocks or at its contact with overlying chert and argillite-sandstone. The Reforma and El Rey massive sulfide deposits are on the overturned limb of a major, thrusted anticline, and the Naranjo and El Largo massive sulfide deposits are to the south on the upright limb of the same major fold. The La Lucha and San Rafael massive sulfide occurrences are in an upper plate to the southwest which was thrusted over the plate containing the Naranjo and El Largo deposits. In several of the deposits, Au, Ag, Zn, and Pb are concentrated near the stratigraphic top, and Cu is concentrated near the stratigraphic base. Major minerals are pyrite, quartz, ankerite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Minor minerals are tennantite-freibergite, arsenopyrite, and pyrrhotite. Gold and Ag occur in argentian gold, and Ag also occurs in tennantite-freibergite. The cumulative inferred resource of massive sulfide for the Reforma, Naranjo, El Rey, and El Largo deposits exceeds 30 Mt, with the latter two deposits incompletely delineated. Underlying pyrite-quartz stockwork zones contain chalcopyrite, chlorite, and sphalerite. Hydrothermal alteration minerals in the stratigraphic footwall are pyrite, quartz, chlorite, ferroan dolomite, and ankerite. In the stratigraphic hangingwall, hydrothermal alteration minerals are sericite, calcite-dolomite, and lesser clay minerals and quartz. The deposits belong to a low-sulfidation, volcanogenic massive sulfide system formed in a subaqueous environment, and are of the bimodal, siliciclastic type.

"Accelerated expansion of Western Canada's metallurgical coal industry has again stimulated considerable exploration activity in the Rocky Mountain Foothills Belt and influenced much of the R&D related to transportation, processing and carbonization. Preparation R&D has included further pilot-plant work on desulphurization, spherical agglomeration and modified compound cyclones (which are also proving themselves in other mineral beneficiation studies). Combustion research, aside from increasingly stressing control of combustion source pollution, has directed special attention to lignite PF firing and problems arising from lignite ash. Studies directed toward the non-fuel utilization of coal have centered on such diverse topics as active carbons, carbonaceous filter media, plant nutrients and industrial applications of humic acid derivatives. In addition, a number of long-range research projects related to such matters as coal chemistry and pyrolysis have been actively pursued, and further attention has been given to improved sampling techniques and analytical methods."

The thirty-fifth consecutive National Safety Competition sponsored and conducted annually by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, closed with several noteworthy accomplishments to its credit. Some of them are: 1. A record low injury-frequency rate of 18.293 disabling work injuries per million man-hours equal to that established in 1957. 2. The third lowest injury-severity rate (4,335). 3. The second highest number of mines and quarries participating (672) 4. A record number of participants finishing the competitive year without a disabling work injury. 5. All recipients of Sentinels of Safety trophies free of disabling work injuries for the first time since 1952.

Pyrometallmurgical reactors constitute a key processing component in the total primary and secondary resource cycle, being involved both in primary smelting, converting and extraction, as well as the reprocessing of scrap, from aluminum cans to end-of-life automobiles. To effectively control the overall resource cycle, one needs to take a systems modeling approach of the whole cycle, seeking to also understand the dynamic process behavior of the individual components of the cycle, and then especially the part that contributes most to the chemical conversion, namely the pyrometallurgical reactor. This paper highlights the role of pyrometallurgical thermodynamics, in the whole resource cycle and specifically places equilibrium thermochemistry in the context of process dynamics where large variable inventories are recycled or maintained within the system. This paper will therefore review the semi-empirical dynamic modeling tools, which are used to model complex systems with the specific goal of developing dynamic predictive models, which also include slag-alloy chemistry, towards controlling the recycling in a feed forward manner. To illustrate the primary processing side, high carbon ferrochrome will be presented as a brief case study. It also will show how the distributed nature of the chemistry of melts in the case of primary extraction, and secondary materials such as recycled end-of-life vehicles, have a significant impact on the process outcomes and model predictions. It is therefore argued that the fundamental thermodynamics and kinetics in metallurgical reactors playa final crucial role in modeling the closed material cycle, but only when it is used in conjunction with process systems theory based on reconciled data for parameter estimation and model calibration.

The rapid development of coal, oil, and gas resources, coupled with the soda ash boom, have created growth pains for the area. Green River and Rock Springs have experienced a 20-25% population increase in 1973 alone. However, public officials, business leaders, and local citizens are taking positive steps to ease the problems relating to housing, schools, medical services, and recreational facilities. What Is Soda Ash? Soda ash is one of the most widely used chemicals in the world. It is an important raw material in the manufacture of glass, paper, soap, petroleum products, metals, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, plastics, and a host of other items essential to every day living. In ancient times, soda ash was obtained from water solutions of various desert earths. Later, it was produced by leaching the ashes of wood and seaweed. For the past 100 years, it has been manufactured by the ammonia-soda process, which employs large quantities of salt, limestone, and coal as raw materials.

1. This investigation shows that the Sewanee bed is the only coal bed being mined in Sequatchie County. Other coal beds are present, but as they do not contain known recoverable reserves, estimates of reserves were made only for the Sewanee bed. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in the Sewanee bed, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 76 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total 62 million short tons represent coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas in the bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were insufficient to permit making an estimate conforming with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves determined by this investigation.

Around 235 million tonnes of marine aggregates have been dredged in the last decade from the UK continental shelf alone. The current distribution of marine aggregate production licence areas in North West Europe reflects the relationship between a variety of factors such as the natural distribution of deposits of sand and gravel, the demand for aggregates, the technical capabilities of the dredging fleet and environmental considerations. Whilst the sand and gravel deposits targeted by the marine aggregate industry are generally relict and therefore geographically fixed, the remaining factors have evolved over time and will continue to do so in future. Applications for new licences must not only reflect the current situation, but anticipate future trends. The main markets for marine aggregates are the construction industry, centred around the larger centres of population and coastal protection projects along the coastline of Europe. The aggregate industry as a whole does not create demand but simply meets it. Many factors influence the overall demand for aggregates and guidance exists for those in authority and industry who need to plan for the supply of aggregates. Adequate supplies should be maintained at the best balance of social, environmental and economic cost, whilst ensuring that extraction and development are consistent with the principles of sustainable development.

Introduction During the past summer, detailed geological mapping was extended to cover the entire group of 31 claims owned by Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery Mines, Ltd., and considerable new information was revealed by development and exploratory work underground. These new facts provide a more complete view of the lithology and structure of the area than has heretofore been available. They also necessitate revision of certain interpretations presented last year by Peale (l), and have served to straighten out some of the problems suggested by Porritt (2). The purpose of this paper is to outline in a broad way the relations as now understood and to discuss in detail certain points which should be of interest to members of the Institute. Maps and records by the mine staff have been freely used in arriving at the interpretation presented in the following pages. The writers are especially indebted to Mr. R. V. Porritt, the mine manager, with whom many of the problems touched upon were discussed on the ground and whose intimate knowledge of the geology of the underground workings aided greatly in testing various hypotheses. The writers have profited greatly, also, from close association with Dr. W. F. James during the course of the work. Permission to publish the included data has very kindly been given .by the management.

The most important development that has been taking place recently relating to mining operations in New Zealand would generally be regarded as being the Resource Management Law Reform. This has been widely publicised by the Government as a comprehensive review of the laws governing New Zealand's natural and physical resources. Submissions have been sought and a free phone provided to encourage public participation. Recently a Discussion Paper has been prepared by the Core Group coordinating the review to explain progress on Phase One (Ministry for the Environment, Directions for Change: A Discussion Paper, Wellington 1988). It outlines Government decisions already taken which impinge on the Review and describes the possible models for resource management laws. However, it is possible that some fundamental practical issues of significance to the mining industry will not be addressed and may be lost sight of in the much wider issues which are to be covered. The purpose of our paper is to address one of these issues namely, the interrelationship between any new resource management legislation and the Conservation Act 1987 (as recently amended) in the context of Ministerial consents. The importance of this issue can be seen from the fact that as at 7 June 1988 there were 279 mining licence applications and 223 prospecting licence applications waiting to be determined by the Minister of Conservation. Since April 1987 only 19 mining and 13 prospecting licences have been consented to. In addition a major proportion of New Zealand's mineral resources are contained with land administered by the Department.

The recycling of MgO-C refractories as a slag conditioner in EAF (electrical arc furnace) foaming slags have been evaluated by the Albany Research Center. The amount of MgO in the slags is critical for the foaming quality. Good foaming slags provide the benefits of high energy efficiency and low refractory consumption and require saturation with MgO. A computer model predicting the chemistry of MgO saturated foaming slags was designed to predict suitable amounts of MgO additives from MgO-C spent refractories. This model can also help to reduce the amount of slags and to improve the economics of producing steel. The implementation of this recycling program is underway at steel plants and the experience of recycling spent refractories will be discussed.

This publication is a revision of the first of a series of four Miners' Circulars originally prepared and issued in 19'29 for use in a course of training designed to prepare mine officials to organize men for rescue and recovery operations. These circulars were revised in 1937 and 1938 and again in 1948. This circular (Miners' Circular 33) discusses mine gases and methods for detecting them. The second of this series (Miners' Circular 34) gives instruction in Bureau of Mines methods of sampling and analysis of mine gases; the third (Miners' Circular 35) describes methods and equipment used for protection against mine gases; and the fourth (Miners' Circular 36) explains procedures used in sealing and unsealing mine fires and in recovery operations after mine fires or mine explosions.

The high degree of mechanisation, which is mainly diesel-powered, has a significant effect on heat loads; heat output from this source often exceeds the heat flow from the surrounding rock. The extensive use of diesel-powered equipment also influences ventilation rates and minimum values are necessary to ensure that emissions of diesel exhaust are adequately diluted. Many Australian mines are in subtropical or tropical areas with high ambient wet- and dry-bulb temperatures on surface. This, coupled with the large amount of heat from mechanisation, usually means that refrigeration is required at much shallower depths. A secondary problem is associated with the definition of acceptable thermal environment conditions, which are sometimes based on the assumption of no air movement. This gives rise to very stringent thermal environment acceptance criteria, which, in some areas, would prohibit work on surface, let alone underground

ALTHOUGH the firm in which the writer is a partner is not exactly the pioneer in the coring of rotary-drilled wells in Southern California, it has taken the lead in bringing coring to its present status. To the Shell Company of California belongs the, honor of having first used the core drill in its endeavors to locate subsurface structures west of Santa Fe Springs. Following those operations, similar work was done near Wasco in the San, Joaquin Valley. Results of the latter core drilling were successful, in that they made it possible to determine the under-ground structure. At, about the same time that the Shell Company was doing the work at Wasco, it was experimenting in the use of the core drill in connection with rotary-drilled holes. The oil sands in its dis¬covery well at Signal Hill were located by means of the rotary core drill. In 1921, in view of the trouble that the operators were having in the fields of Southern California, and particularly at Huntington Beach, R. E. Collom, of the State Mining Bureau, called their attention to the possibilities of the core drill for eliminating many of the serious problems that were facing them. It was this same difficulty encountered by the operator in locating the oil sands that caused the writer to enter into con-tract core drilling; late in 1921 the California operators became converted to the advantages of that method, and in the short space of one year core drilling in rotary-drilled holes has risen from a theory to an established practice.

Video technology coupled with data logging exposure monitors have been used to evaluate worker exposure to different types of contaminants. However, previous application of this technology used a stationary video camera to record the worker?s activity while the worker wore some type of contaminant monitor. These techniques are not applicable to mobile workers in the mining industry because of their need to move around the operation while performing their duties and tasks. The Helmet-CAM is a recently developed exposure assessment tool that integrates a person-wearable video recorder with a data logging dust monitor that are worn by a miner in a backpack, safety belt, or safety vest to identify areas or job tasks of elevated exposure. After a miner performs his or her job while wearing the unit, the video and dust exposure data files are downloaded to a computer and then merged together through a NIOSH-developed computer software program called EVADE (Enhanced Video Analysis of Dust Exposure). By providing synchronized playback of the merged video footage and dust exposure data, the EVADE software allows for the assessment and identification of key work areas and processes, as well as work tasks that significantly impact a worker?s personal respirable dust exposure. The Helmet-CAM technology has been tested at a number of metal/nonmetal mining operations and has proven to be a very valuable assessment tool. Mining companies wishing to use this technique can purchase a commercially available video camera and an instantaneous dust monitor to obtain the necessary data, and the NIOSH-developed EVADE software will be available for download at no cost on the NIOSH website.

In most branches of the mining industry it is a well-recognized fact that care must be taken to protect the mineral deposit from undue physical injury. It is comparatively easy to grasp this idea when the mineral is a solid and the lives of workmen depend directly upon the care with which it is removed from its natural position, but when the product is a liquid drawn up from pools several thousand feet beneath the surface of the ground through openings only a few inches in diameter, it requires some imagination to picture underground conditions and the changes which must often occur. The development of the petroleum deposits of California has been attended by numerous accidents, the results of which are readily noticed at the top of the wells and in the profit and loss accounts of the operators. Determination of the cause of these accidents has been the subject of considerable study, which naturally has fallen upon men familiar with technical methods. The greatest damage to the oil deposits of California has resulted from water finding its way into the oil-bearing sands, and it is the purpose of this paper to set forth briefly this phase of the oil industry. Much of the material here presented has previously appeared in publications issued by the California State Mining Bureau, which, under the direction of State Mineralogist Fletcher McN. Hamilton, has investigated the subject and taken steps toward improvement of conditions. The writer, having been in charge of this branch of the Bureau work, has gained considerable knowledge of existing conditions. Generally speaking, the oil-bearing formations of California are soft, unconsolidated sand beds, separated by clay strata, which are also soft. Some of the sand beds carry water instead of oil. All of the beds are more or less separated, probably being of lenticular shape. Very few of the beds in the oil fields lie flat or undisturbed over any great area. Folding and tilting are common, and faulting also occurs in some of the fields. The accumulation of oil is not confined to any single structural feature, such as the anticline, but occurs in many other structural features. Management of historic tailings is a major challenge facing the mining industry and its regulators. However, through improved mineralogical and chemical characterisation of such materials the opportunity to develop better rehabilitation strategies arises. Microanalytical techniques including microscopy, mineral liberation analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) allow for improved tailings characterisation – but the challenge posed by these techniques is how to use them effectively. Additionally, data sets collected by such techniques must be properly integrated, only then can they assist in the identification of the most appropriate rehabilitation strategies. A study conducted at the Old Tailings Dam (OTD) located at the Savage River Mine, Tasmania allowed for the integrated use of several microanalytical techniques to help evaluate the benefits of a shallow water cover as a potential rehabilitation strategy. Samples (n = 144) from 14 trenches and 11 boring cores (2 m maximum depth) were collected across the OTD. These were subjected to routine acid-base accounting, with a subset subjected to detailed mineralogy using a modified sulfide alteration index (SAI), X-ray diffractometry and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). In addition, representative samples (n = 6) from across the OTD were subjected to laser-ablation ICPMS to characterise the pyrite chemistry. Our results showed that tailings in the northern area submerged under a natural water cover were relatively unoxidised from approximately 1 m depth, with SAI values of 1 to 2. Tailings from the subaerial southern portion were extensively oxidised to approximately 35 cm depth (SAI = maximum 5.8), with fresher materials observed underneath (SAI = 5 to 5.8). Pyrite from across the OTD is enriched in Co, Cu and Ni. Through the integrated application of microanalytical tools, we determined that establishing a water cover of at least 1.5 m depth across the OTD is a suitable rehabilitation option for this historic site.
