Flotation is an operation widely used in mineral processing because of its aptitude to recover minerals of interest very efficiently. Flotation is often responsible for making possible the exploitation of mineral deposits of low concentration. In flotation various processes phenomena occur, some of which have still not been explained scientifically. Due to this fact, there are no models that can be widely applied in flotation control. Thus, in most cases, the control is done by experienced operators who are able to visually classify the types of foam into different categories and each one of them is associated with an operating actuation. In this situation, image analysis is configured as a solution that has already been employed in several ways. In this paper, a control strategy based on the colour of froth on a direct flotation of a nonferrous metal is presented. Moreover, the paper reveals the theoretical basis of the method, the critical points, difficulties and improvements that can be implemented. Data of grade were collected from the mineral of interest and RGB (red, green and blue) data of final concentrate of the froth. The mineral grade was collected and analysed during one month of operation and RGB was obtained using a camera. It was verified that the red colour showed the same trend of the grade curve in the concentrate. Thus, the use of this online data in optimising control was introduced. The laboratory grade is used to calibrate the colour set point. Therefore, it was possible to monitor in real time the trend of enrichment and depletion of a non-ferrous mineral in a flotation. It was possible to establish an online control strategy based on simple data acquisition. The result was an increase of 10% on production.

Flotation is a complex process in which many mechanisms come into interaction. In this paper, an approach to model these mechanisms in order to predict size-by-size flotation performances is presented. The estimation of the collection efficiency of particles takes into account the serial sub-processes of particle-bubble collision, attachment and detachment. The model was applied to an industrial plant and yielded satisfactory results whereby the actual flotation performances could be correctly predicted. Furthermore, the flotation model allowed investigating the possibility of improving flotation performances by a split flotation feed in comparison to the actual single-stage process.

Opportunities to monitor and control primary grinding mill performance are strongly sought after in the mineral processing industry. Currently, limited on-line information about mill charge motion and content is available to mill operations for control purposes, leading to periods of lower throughput, instability, variable product size and accelerated mill liner and lifter wear. In response to this need, CSIRO has developed an on-line surface vibration monitor for primary grinding mills which produces data that has been shown to provide new information about the mill charge in terms of toe and shoulder position, as well as potentially key features such as the overall charge level, the distribution between rock and balls in the mill, and the impact of the charge on the mill liners and lifters. This paper outlines the key features of the on-line monitor system, particularly those relating to data transmission, data analysis, and the design of the monitor and its independent power supply. It describes the coupling of single vibration sensor data from the CSIRO on-line monitor to the actual operating conditions of a SAG mill and how the vibration response and hence mill operating conditions vary as a function of time, including during mill equipment failures such as a broken discharge grate. Opportunities for improved mill control based on the data from the on-line monitor are also discussed, as well as the implications in terms of mill processing and maintenance performance. Recently a CSIRO monitor was also installed on a ROM ball mill and analysis of the vibration sensor data from this installation is currently underway. Preliminary findings from this installation will be presented along with comparisons of generic information, such as toe position (measurement precision and operation variability) and vibration signal (intensity, sensitivity and operation variability), between this type of primary grinding mill and AG/SAG mills.

The turbulence characteristics and measurement techniques for agitated tanks are well established for liquid and liquid-gas systems. However, the literature shows that the overall energy dissipation rate (related to turbulence) is affected not only by air addition, but also by the concentration of solids. Unfortunately, there are no reliable measurement techniques for characterizing turbulence in a three phase (liquid-solids-gas) environmental system, which is the case in a flotation cell. Therefore, the effect of turbulence on flotation kinetics is very much one of conjecture. The aim of this work was to develop a sensor to characterize the degree of velocity fluctuation, which is related to turbulence, in a flotation cell operating with slurry and air. This sensor comprises a piezoelectric film transducer that converts mechanical to electrical energy. Hence, when the sensor deflects backwards and forwards an AC voltage is created. Flotation studies carried out using this sensor in a 3m3 Metso RCS cell processing a copper sulphide ore showed a highly turbulent impeller zone with transition to a significantly less turbulent zone in the upper portion of the cell. The transition region moves as the cell operating variables are changed, for instance the impeller speed, impeller size, air rate and feed solids concentration. LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB) is operating iron ore mines, concentration plants and pelletizing plants in Northern Sweden. The largest of the apatite magnetite deposits and the mines are Kiirunavaara with annual production rate of approximately 27 Mt crude ore underground. LKAB produces two varieties of pellets: blast furnace pellets and direct reduction pellets (LKAB DR Oxide Pellets). Meanwhile the concentration process in a sequence of the low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and flotation at the concentration plant. In spring 2007 there were noticed great fluctuations of SiO2 grade in the crude ore. The high SiO2 grade is particularly problematic in the case of direct reduction pellets. In consequence, a project was started (called Silica in the Mine) to define exactly the problem related with silica and to find out, if possible, the reason for the great fluctuation of SiO2 grade in the crude ore going to the processing plant. A further target of this project was to develop a simplified method at the laboratory scale, to predict SiO2 grade in the magnetite concentrate in the future, but also predict the physical properties of the ore with respect to mineral processing. The essential stage of systematic characterization of the ore body for mineral processing properties is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the large scale at the concentration plants using empirical data collected at the mineral processing by LKAB in Kiruna. Further a target was also to find useful physical parameters for mineral processing and implant those parameters into the existing geological 3D-model of the deposit. This information will be used for making prognosis of the future mining and the quality of the crude ore. It will also give better control and improve the production planning in the mine and the performance at the concentration plant in Kiruna concerning the decrease of the SiO2 grade of the magnetite concentrate.

In view of the state of the long time use of sodium cyanide in lead-zinc-sulfur-silver multimetallic ore production, we propose alternative reagents system through experimental research. The experiment first used TJ, sodium sulfide to adjust the flotation pulp, after that, zinc sulfate, sodium sulfite was added to low alkaline pulp to inhibiting zinc sulfur mineral and adapted MB, 25# aerofloat and diethyl dithiocarbamate combination collectors to float lead minerals. The obtained test index is as follows: lead concentrate recovery rate of small scale test was increased by 5 to 10%, the recovery rates of gold and silver in lead concentrate were increased by 7% and 11% respectively; the industrial test is conducted under the condition that the total grade of lead and zinc content in raw ore decreased by 4.81%, the total recovery rate of lead and zinc increased by 7%, recovery rates of gold and silver in lead concentrate were increased by 7.62% and 9.65% respectively. So it successfully realizes the target to replace the sodium cyanide, using low-alkaline non-toxic reagents system in mineral processing practice of three kinds of complex lead-zinc-sulfur ore of this mine. In last decade, along with its booming Chinese economy, China?s higher education has experienced rapid growth. In 2010, the number of various colleges totals more than 3500, with 2.2 million faculties registered. Currently there are almost 30 million students studying in the colleges, 3 times more than 10 years ago. Mineral Processing was initiated in 1949 as a sub-discipline of Mining Engineering, one of the 13 first level disciplines. Mineral Processing is now established in 34 Chinese colleges, recruiting 2600 undergraduate students, 540 postgraduate students and 100 PhD students every year. A further 9 institutes offer postgraduate education in this field. More than 3000 graduates majoring in Mineral Processing join the industry or institutions each year. The four-year undergraduate teaching and practical training in the colleges is designed to produce qualified mineral processing professionals. This includes courses in mathematics and natural science, fundamental engineering and basic and specialization courses. Recently, the ?Excellent Engineer Program? was launched to strengthen students? practical capabilities. This is a 3+1 teaching and training model; 3 years of theoretical course study plus 1 accumulated year of various practical studies, either inside or outside the college. As for graduate employment, mining-related major graduates have been in a good demand thanks to the intensive investment in mineral sector by Chinese companies. The shortage of experienced metallurgists generates a greater than 90% employment rate for Mineral Processing graduates. However, the biggest problem we are still facing is the gap between the quality of the graduates and the requirements of industry, as a result of occupation attraction, teaching systems, faculty quality, and so forth. Another problem is international orientation. Although nowadays Chinese-foreign cooperation in college education is popular, collaborative mineral related projects are far less common, leaving much room for improvement. Looking ahead to the next 10 years, we still have the right reasons to estimate continued prosperity in the minerals sector as well as mineral processing education in China. In 1951, Tata Steel became the pioneer in Asia by setting up its first ever washery in West Bokaro Colliery. The first beneficiation plant used to produce clean coal of 19% ash with chance cone. Feed size of chance washers were -75 mm to +6 mm. The fine coal (-6 mm) were used directly. With change in technology,in 1986,chance cones were replaced by DM cyclones and coal was washed in two circuits. In the coarse circuit -13 mm to +0.5 mm coal was washed in two stages while the fine coal of -0.5 mm was treated in froth floatation cell. With further improvement in the process the higher ash raw coal was feed to produce clean coal of 13% ash. In 1998, DSM cyclones were replaced by scrolled Evolute design cyclone which has Ep of 0.020 to 0.025 ranges resulting in increase efficiency of separation. With the increase in demand of clean coal, lower seam proportion has increased in raw coal production. The washability studies of individual seams indicated large difference in the seam characteristics in terms of washability and specific gravity cut points of the individual seams. So washing all seams together had resulted in frequent change in the character of coal and warrants frequent changes in the operating parameters of the plant in which the separating efficiency comes down and ultimately resulted in yield loss initially. With increase in knowledge and experience in coal washing the solution to this problem was achieved by adopting, seam-wise washing which is enabling process engineers by keeping set point for longer periods there by to enhance the separation efficiency. The treatment of placer gold with fine gold, associated with gold-bearing sulfide minerals, heavy minerals and oxidized minerals such as manganowolframite (gubnerite) is not an easy task. In this case, this complex material cannot be treated using physical separation methods such as deep concentration and finishing, magnetic separation and solvent extraction. This technology is usually employed in gold washings finishing plant. The easiest way to recover precious metals in the form of an easy-to-sample saleable product is metallurgical treatment. This paper describes the application of pyrometallurgical processes with oxidative roasting, re-cleaning of cinders (if required) and ore-thermal smelting for producing gold bullion. Hydrometallurgical treatment of slags as an additional operation is recommended in order to maximize recovery of valuable metals. After this treatment, a barren leaching cake rich in PGM can be sold in the market. PGM can be collected as gold-silver alloy during smelting which allows the phase formation of polymetallic matte due to specific composition of fluxes. The PGM are then in the form of saleable gold bullions in the refinery.

Pre-combustion cleaning of coal plays a key role in the process of efficient and clean utilization of coal resources. Recently, wet beneficiation of coal is predominant around the world. Nevertheless, wet beneficiation processes are limited by the increasingly serious problem of worldwide shortage of water, especially in China. Thus, it is imperative to develop efficient dry coal beneficiation techniques. Currently, several technologies such as air dense medium fluidized bed, compound dry cleaning and air jigging have successfully achieved high-efficiency separation of 50~6 mm coal. However, in recent years, a large amount of fine coal is generated as the mechanized mining technology has been progressively deployed in coal sector. Thus, it is necessary to develop efficient dry beneficiation techniques for fine coal. In recent years, many countries including China, India, Canada, Germen, and Australia have carried out many research works on fine coal dry beneficiation techniques. China University of Mining and Technology has carried out systematic researches on the introduction the vibrated energy to traditional air dense medium fluidized bed for fine coal beneficiation. This paper studied air dense medium vibrated fluidized beds (ADMVFB) for fine coal dry beneficiation. The experimental results show that the coal of <6 mm size can be beneficiated in an ADMVFB efficiently with the E value of 0.065~0.085, the separating density can be adjusted in the range of 1.45~2.2 g/cm3, and the lower limit of beneficiation can reach to 0.5 mm. The demand for minerals has never been higher. Moreover, the rate at which this demand is growing is unprecedented, and expansions and new mines will be required to fulfill these growing needs. This, in turn requires a skilled engineering workforce that can develop and operate minerals extraction processes to utilise effectively more complex ores. The International Mineral Processing Council (IMPC) has established a Commission on Mineral Processing Education to consider the global challenge of ensuring an adequate supply of well-trained mineral processing engineers. The Commission has, for the past four years, been collecting international information of the recent mineral process engineering supply position and with a view into the near future. The data collected by the international Commission members are as follows: ? Undergraduate student numbers in minerals engineering ? A breakdown of their male/female ratio ? The fraction of the students from each course that enter the minerals industry ? Teaching staff numbers and age profile This data has been collated and analysed, and the findings are presented. It is clear from the analysis that the supply situation is very different in different regions of the world, and that great opportunities exist for targeted recruitment into the industry to meet the future talent demand. Further, an attempt at correlate the supply of minerals engineers based on the local mineral production rate is shown, which shows that there are clear outliers.

A complex polymetallic sulfide ore in Yunnan, China, has various valuable minerals, which are Chalcopyrite, Galena, Pyrite, Gold, Silver, and Magnetite. A reasonable new flowsheet with a bulk flotation and a flotation separation of sulfide minerals that are Chalcopyrite, Galena, and Pyrite was carried out at first stage. After that tailings were treated by low intensity magnetic separation to achieve magnetite concentrate. A high Pb concentrate assaying 60.00 percent Pb at total recovery of 75.71 percent with 40.50 g/t Au and 1390.00 g/t Ag, a final high Cu concentrate assaying 24.45 percent Cu at high recovery of 92.03 percent and a magnetite concentrate assaying 60.78 percent Fe at recovery of 33.61 percent with 18.45g/t Au and 234.99 g/t Ag, are obtained. The total recovery of Gold and Silver in Pb concentrate and Cu concentrate reached 71.63 percent and 67.32 percent, respectively. It is shown, that this new flowsheet could realize efficient recovery for all of the valuable minerals in the ore and is easy to be industrialized. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the relationship between different milling procedures, viz. a ball mill and an IsaMill respectively, and the flotation performance of the different mill products. Two ores were used, viz. a base metal sulphide (BMS) and a platinum group mineral (PGM) UG2 ore. Flotation was used as a diagnostic to investigate whether the different milling procedures may have different effects of the floatability of the particles. The present study is part of a research programme investigating this question using a wide range of comminutiondevices and procedures. Similar particle size fractions from the different milling procedures were used in the flotation tests. The particles were characterized in terms of particle size distribution, morphology (using scanning electron microscopy and image analysis software) and rheology tests. The results have shown that in general when comparing similar feeds to flotation in terms of equivalent particle size distributions as indicated by the d80 value, the ball mill generally yielded better recoveries and grades in the case of the BMS and lower chromite recoveries in the case of the UG2 ore compared to the IsaMill. No significant differences were observed in the morphological or rheological characteristics of the particles subjected to the different milling procedures. Although the results appear to indicate that IsaMilling is less advantageous than ball milling in terms of the flotation performance for the two ores studied it should be emphasized that these results do not take into account the relative advantage which IsaMilling has over ball milling in terms of direct and indirect energy consumption and GHG emissions nor, most importantly, does it consider the platinum group element recoveries in the case of the UG2 which may have increased significantly as a result of the finer grind which the IsaMill produces after 4 passes compared to the ball mill after 64 min. Such results which will be reported is due course may show that the greater liberation expected after IsaMilling of the PGMs outweighs any disadvantages indicated in this study.

It is well known that the grinding circuit plays a crucial role in flotation. The effect of pulp chemistry during grinding is often overlooked. It is believed that the surface properties of the minerals can be adjusted during flotation rather than during grinding. However, recent development in surface analysis techniques (TOF-SIMS, XPS, and AES etc.) have proven that the hydrophilic iron hydroxides formed at the mineral surface during grinding make it difficult for collector adsorption, which may result in poor grades and recoveries of the valuable minerals. This study investigated the effect of the pulp chemistry conditions during milling and the subsequent effects on flotation performance of an Nkomati ore. The results have shown that there was approximately 10 % increase in Ni recovery, when the ore was ground at a dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of 0 ppm (DO-0) in comparison to no gas control during the grinding stage. However, when the pH was changed from 9 to 11, no gas control resulted in a 20 % decrease in the Ni recovery compared to only 5 % decrease in the Ni recovery at DO-0. A noteworthy observation is that controlling a combination of DO and pH during grinding is of critical importance for better floatability and selectivity for such a system. It also became clear from this study that the presence of oxygen is critical to the consumption of xanthate, which is consistent with the general literature. It has been established that grinding at lower DO levels/redox potentials (Eh) in the presence of xanthate significantly improves the flotation performance of the valuable minerals.

Poor floatability of fine particles is known to be the main cause of the low recovery of ilmenite in Panzhihua, which is the largest titanium mine of China. To get an optimum ilmenite recovery, selective flocculation, and flotation of fine ilmenite was investigated through flotation tests, particle size analysis, zeta potential tests and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) shows flocculation effect for both ilmenite and titanaugite without selectivity, while selective flocculation could be realized by the combination of water glass and CMC. It is because that competitive adsorption would take place on these two kinds of mineral when water glass and CMC are used together. On the surface of ilmenite, the adsorption ability of CMC is stronger than that of water glass, so that CMC can absorb to the same extent irrespective of the presence of a pre-adsorbed layer of water glass and ilmenite particles is flocculated by CMC. The same cannot be said of the titanaugite phase as water glass strongly adsorbs onto the titanaugite, and the adsorption of CMC is hindered. Therefore, the titanaugite particles keep dispersion. Furthermore, the flotation of fine ilmenite particles is feasible as the ilmenite floccules could react with sodium oleate. In the flotation separation of Panzhihua ilmenite ore, the recovery of TiO2 increased from 52.63% to 68.28% by selective flotation. Keywords: ilmenite, flotation, selective flocculation, adsorption

Batch biosorption experiments were carried out for the bio-remediation of Cr (VI) ions from aqueous solutions using Serratia marcescens, a Gram negative, heterotroph and Gram positive bacterial isolates from a chromite mine. The influence of various experimental parameters such as contact time, pH, concentration of Cr (VI) ions and amount of biomass was evaluated with respect to the uptake of Cr (VI). The bio-sorption of Cr (VI) was found to be quite rapid and the percentage biosortion was found to increase with increase in the equilibrium chromium concentration. The free energy of biosorption of Cr (VI) was estimated to be in the range of -23 to -25 kJ/mol for the chosen bacteria. The uptake of chromium by the bacteria was confirmed by EDX and FTIR spectroscopy. As a follow up of this study, bacterial strains resistant to hexavalent chromium were isolated from a chromite mine in Karnataka, India and identified as Arthrobacter sp., Micrococcus sp. and Exiguobacterium sp. using 16s rRNA sequencing. The efficacy of the bacterial isolates for Cr (VI) uptake was assessed and over 90% bioremoval could be achieved for Serratia marcescens and Micrococcus sp. isolate. The heap leaching of oxide copper ores with copper cathode recovery by solvent extraction and electrowinning is now well established as a low-cost method of copper recovery. The main purpose of this study was to extract copper from the copper low-grade oxide ore of Chodarchaei mine using column leaching. The copper oxide ore contained 1.1% Cu and 1.75% Fe. The mineralogical analysis indicated the malachite (Cu2(OH)2CO3) was mainly composed of oxidized phases. The sulfuric acid leaching experiments were performed under the laboratory conditions. The influence of several parameters on the course of the reaction such as particle size, acid concentration, flow rate, and time was examined. The optimum collective extraction of copper and iron was obtained at a particle size of +10-15 mm for a leaching duration of 3 days with sulfuric acid concentration of 100 gpl and using a flow rate of 2.5 cc/min. Under these conditions, the recovery of copper and iron were 98.54% and 41.99%, respectively. Keywords: column leaching, copper, iron, working diagram.

This article reviews factors of preg-robbing effect, occurring in the course of pressure oxidation of ore and concentrates, containing chloride compounds and so-called &apos;organic carbon&apos;. The article also summarizes the main results of the studies and testwork conducted to overcome this effect. The following efficient preg-robbing mitigation methods have been noted: higher temperature of pressure oxidation process, preliminary removal of natural carbonaceous material from concentrate, chloride removal prior to concentrate pressure oxidation, and addition of water-soluble organic blanking agents, which suppress the adsorption activity of the native ore adsorbents.
