ABSTRACT: The current study analyzes the feasibility of an odd operation: to obtain, using a properly tailored drilling and blasting scheme, blocks suitable for the production of dimension stone from tunnel driving. Clearly, a compromise must be found between the rate of progression and the achievement of workable blocks. As a case study, a civil work under consideration in northern Italy was examined. The work was planned to cross a conglomerate that has traditionally been locally exploited for the production of highly prized paving and lining stones with excellent strength and aesthetic features. Natural exposures and mined-out quarries were available for tests. The relevant rock data are given, blast designs are shown (within the limitations of contour accuracy), and the test program is described.

Controlled Short Circuit ? Metal Inert Gas (CSC-MIG) welding is a process that can be referred as a "Cold Welding" technology. The CSC process is based on accurate control of the welding wire position, thus the mandatory requirement for the automation of the process. One of the main advantages of the CSC-MIG process is the rapid solidification of the deposited material, resulting in weldments displaying low porosity contents, and enabling the joining of thin sheet materials. These characteristics render this process an ideal one for freeforming of components, where rapid solidification would be efficacious. This presentation will focus on the progress made towards the freeforming of Al-based components in the NAIN laboratory at McGill University. The relationship between the filler metal used, freeforming (deposition) parameters, resulting microstructure and mechanical properties will be presented.

To aid the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in their Resource Development Navigation Study of ten existing or proposed port sites in Alaska, the Bureau of Mines examined the potential for mineral development around three Alaska port sites: Iliamna Bay, Kotzebue, and Nome. The mineral deposits near Iliamna Bay include gold, copper, and iron. Development of minerals in this area will require the discovery of new deposits or the definition of additional are reserves at known deposits. The mineral deposits near Kotzebue are primarily gold, copper, coal, lead, and uranium. Based on the character of these deposits, it appears that development of a small-scale mine supplying coal for regional use is the most likely scenario in the near-term. The mineral deposits near Nome are primarily gold and copper. Development of small underground gold mines is possible, however it appears that expanded offshore gold dredging will have the greatest impact on the flow of freight and goods through the Nome port in the near term.

Good blasting practices based on the careful application of explosive energy lead to significantly safer mining operations. Case studies demonstrate how the selection of the correct charge mass, explosive type and round design are vital for extracting the exact amount of rock required and preventing spurious damage to the remaining rock mass. In other cases the explosives are applied to precondition the rock mass, design rockburst resistant support, prevent damage to important excavations and reduce the exposure of miners to unsafe conditions. The Hybrid Stress Blasting Model is used to understand the explosive rock interaction and to illustrate and contrast good and bad blasting practices. In all cases, good supervision is required to continue safe mining according to the design. "Instead of nickel-based stainless steel, a nitrogen-bearing stainless steel was produced to reduce the production cost stemming from the shortage of nickel recourses. Thermodynamic model to calculate the saturation nitrogen content in the stainless steel were developed and the model was validated by experimental measurement. The experiments were performed with a high temperature induction furnace. Nitrogen gas under constant pressure was injected into the crucible with a top lance by which the nitrogen was transferred to the molten stainless steel. The effects of chemical composition, temperature, superficial active elements and nitrogen-flow rate on transferring nitrogen to the steel were investigated and discussed.IntroductionWith the rapid production growth of stainless steels, nitrogen-bearing stainless steel has recently attracted more and more attention for their high strength and excellent corrosion resistance imparted by interstitial nitrogen without decreasing its toughness and ductility. Moreover, the addition of nitrogen to the stainless steel as a substitute for nickel leads a lower consumption of nickel, so significantly lowers the high production cost stemming from the shortage of nickel recourses. However, production of the nitrogen-bearing steel is difficult since nitrogen is a gas element and has a low solubility in the steel. So efficiently increasing the amount of nitrogen in steel continues to be one of the main concerns for the production of nitrogen-bearing steels.Currently there are some special processes to produce austenitic stainless steels with a very high N content, including pressurized electroslag remelting, counter-pressure casting, special induction melting and powder metallurgy, etc [1]. Special expensive vacuum system was required for these processes. Alloying nitrogen at a normal pressure can be performed by alloy addition or gas injection. Blowing nitrogen gas is a more economic and advisable method since the nitrogen-bearing alloy is quite expensive and contains high content of impurities. A number of investigations have been reported on the solubility of nitrogen gas in pure iron [2] but few in iron-based multi-component alloys such as stainless steel.In the current study, the effects of steel chemical composition, temperature, superficial active elements and nitrogen-flow rate on transferring nitrogen to the steel were experimentally investigated with a high temperature induction furnace."

Raises are widely constructed underground in hard rock mining for ventilation, material transport or emergency escape. The four major raise excavation methods, Drop Raise, Conventional, Alimak and Raise Bore can be divided into two categories from ground control point of view, one ground support can be installed during excavation, the other not. Excavation method must be chosen carefully to keep the raise wall in stable state during excavation and make sure enough rock stand-up time to install ground support if needed. If rock quality is permitted and there is no strict space limitation, raise bore method which is the only method that ground support can not be installed after the whole excavation is finished should be considered first because it is faster, cheaper, safer and less disturbance to the hosting rock. Support may or may not be needed depends on the purpose of the raise and rock quality. In high quality hosting rocks, if the raise is only for ventilation or material transfer, support may be not needed. If it is for emergency escape or escape and ventilation, which provide or require personnel access, the whole raise must be supported either in high or low quality rock. Based on on site data collection, construction and raise utilization, this paper gave out the rule of thumb how to decide an excavation method. After purpose of the raise, required raise diameter (size) and raise site options being known, geotechnical data collection is the next important step in a raise project.

"The piassava fiber is one of the most rigid natural lignocellulosic fibers, which has since the last decade been investigated as possible reinforcement for polymeric composites. In the present work, the tensile properties of polyester composites reinforced with piassava fibers with thinner diameters were investigated. Composites with volume fractions up to 30% of continuous and aligned piassava fibers were tensile tested at room temperature to evaluate the ultimate strength, elastic modulus and total strain. For each volume fraction, individually separated fibers with the smaller diameters were tested. The results indicated that the tensile properties tend to improve with increasing volume fraction of the thinner piassava fibers. The role played by the fiber/matrix interaction was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy.IntroductionA significant change in the transportation sectors mainly the aerospace and automotive, occurred last century with the introduction of stronger and lighter materials. The most relevant example was the polymer composite reinforced with synthetic fiber. They are nowadays replacing conventional materials such as the aluminum alloys in airplane body owing to superior specific strength. in recent years, however, environmental problems in a global scale are imposing a reversion in the use of synthetic fiber specially the glass fiber. In spite of its higher specific strength, this fiber and its polymer composites can neither be recycled nor incinerated in a thermal plant to generate electricity [1]. Moreover, the fabrication, processing and transportation of a glass fiber composite are associated with C02emission, the major responsible for global warming [2].A possible substitute for glass fiber without the above-mentioned environmental problems, could be a natural fiber. In fact, natural fibers obtained from cellulose-rich plants, also called lignocellulosic fiber, are already being used in several engineering fields, particularly the automobile industry [3-6]. Figure 1 illustrates an automobile and its many components made of lignocellulosic fiber composite [7]."

A value assessment model which uses deal objectives, financial and non-financial indicators as a guide to assess value creation in mergers and acquisitions. The extent to which post- merger deal objectives are achieved and the potential benefits derived from mining deals that may not necessarily be financial of nature, but which are necessary to sustain and enhance future performance, were considered. The pre-merger and post-merger performances based on some financial indicators that reflect profitability for shareholders were also used. This value assessment model was used to assess four major deals that have occurred in the South African mining industry since 2003 as part of a postgraduate dissertation. In this paper, the Harmony and ARMgold merger is used as an example of how the model can be applied. The model?s relevance and applicability can also serve as a guideline in developing a framework or holistic guideline in assessing whether mining BEE deals in South Africa create value.

NIOSH and the Illinois Clean Coal Institute are funding studies on characterization of coal and quartz dust in Interior Basin mines since 2009. Coal dust characteristics vary significantly and, are vital for the development of the engineering controls. This paper presents wettability characteristics of coal dust with respect to its chemical and physical properties, since wettability is considered to be a primary dust control technique. Particle size distribution, inter-particle interactions during wetting and quartz associations with organic and inorganic matter in coal seams is critical for understanding wetting phenomena. Silica content in the un-wetted fractions was found to be very high during wetting tests. Wetting of quartz may be limited by its association to hydrophobic materials as well as buoyancy forces resulting from particle size characteristics and particle-particle interaction in the wetting agent. Temperature of the wetting solution and effective contact time between dust particles and water droplets are found to be two important variables affecting the wettability. The characterization data obtained from this study can be utilized to develop engineering controls.

In 1981 and 1985-1986, the Bureau of Mines conducted orientation studies of marine placer platinum-group metals (PGM). PGM are derived from the Goodnews Bay ultramafic complex and magnetic surveys show that the complex extends offshore at least four mi. The present seafloor was an emergent foreland as recently as 8000 years ago. High-energy ocean processes are transporting and depositing sediment such that PGM-bearing materials are reworked and later masked by barren littoral drift. Exploration targets include 1) placers formed since present transgression began, and 2) ancient marine and drowned fluvial deposits. Additionally, there is evidence of PGM solution transport and accretion. At least minor values of PGM in Recent lag-type placers and possible submarine strands are concentrated along an offshore scarp incised through glacial deposits into the preglacial surface between Flat Cape and Red Mountain. Other Recent PGM-bearing features include Flat Cape shoal, Chagvan Bay, Salmon River delta, and modern beaches. Ancient placers include possible N-S fluvial systems 2 to 3 mi offshore, a nearshore scarp 50 ft below sea level, and strands adjacent to projected ultramafic bedrock slopes. The existance of ancient placers is dependent on depth of glacial erosion. SEM studies show PGM are principally isoferroplatinum and osmiridium, with minor sperrylite, moncheite, and platiniridium. Gold is a co-product, and concentrates comprise chromite, ilmenite, and magnetite. Beneficiation tests successfully concentrated precious metals from natural blacksand accumulations, but failed to concentrate low-grade lag gravels.

"The scraps of high quality steels generally contain expensive alloying elements such as chromium, vanadium, nickel, etc. These scraps are melted in an induction or an electric arc furnace and refined in ESR (Electroslag Remelting) purification process. A significant amount of alloying elements are lost during these processes. In order to avoid these losses, scraps can be utilized directly in ESR by skipping the melting step. In this study, 316L stainless steel scraps were refined in ESR with selected synthetic slags. The products were analyzed by optic emission spectrometry and the effects of slag compositions on the alloying element losses were examined. According to the analysis of the scrap and the products, generally chromium, nickel and manganese losses were encountered. It was determined that the alloying element losses has no connection with electrical conductivity. The slag containing CaF2, Al2O3, and FeO gives the optimum Cr and Ni losses.IntroductionElectroslag remelting (ESR), which is the consumable electrode refining process, finds a wide range of utilization for the production of high quality, low inclusion alloys. This process is based on melting a consumable electrode under a molten synthetic slag containing CaF2, Al2O3, CaO etc. The synthetic slag provides the chemical refining and insulation of molten metal from air which leads to a higher purity and an inclusion-free product. Silver minerals are known to have slow leaching rates and low overall extraction and require a high concentration of cyanide and a long retention time to maximize leach extraction. Their response to cyanidation is considered mild to moderately refractory, largely due to complex mineralogical compositions. New research on improving the dissolution of silver minerals in cyanide was performed using high-purity minerals, as well as a high-grade ore sample from the Kupol property, owned 75% by Kinross Gold. The high-purity silver minerals studied in the leach investigations included acanthite, stephanite and pyrargyrite, which were also the predominant silver minerals in the Kupol ore sample. Dissolution of silver from acanthite produced only 37% extraction in 48 hours of leaching with 500 ppm NaCN. Analysis of the leached acanthite surface showed appreciable formation of polysulfide species, which can interfere with silver leaching. Adding lead nitrate into a pretreatment stage increased the acanthite silver extraction to 86.2%. No polysulfide species were formed with the addition of lead nitrate from the surface analysis. Cyanidation of stephanite and pyrargyrite produced very low dissolutions of silver, only 12.6% and 10.4%, respectively, in the absence of lead nitrate. Silver extraction from stephanite improved to 98% by adding lead nitrate directly to the leaching stage, whereas pyrargyrite required a pretreatment with lead nitrate to extract 83.2% Ag. With the addition of lead nitrate, the mineral surfaces had a PbO species and minor amounts of Pb(OH)2 and antimony was oxidized on the stephanite and pyrargyrite surfaces during leaching. There was a much greater concentration of Sb(V) on stephanite relative to pyrargyrite. Therefore, lead forms a redox couple on silver mineral grains and favors the oxidation of silver minerals. The high-grade Kupol sample assayed 22.6 g/t Au and 359.3 g/t Ag following treatment by gravity separation. Gold and silver extractions from the Kupol sample were 94.5% and 82.9%, respectively, using 500 ppm NaCN and 250 g/t lead nitrate. The findings to improve the extraction of silver from the ore sample with lead nitrate addition were congruent with those to improve the extraction of silver from the individual high purity minerals. Pretreatment did not, however, improve gold or silver extraction significantly with the ore sample.

"In oxidative ladle refining (OLR) of silicon, the metal surface is oxidized resulting in the formation of a condensed silica fume (SiO2). In the current work, industrial measurement campaigns were performed aiming to measure the fume generation during OLR. A thorough discussion of the possible mechanisms has been included in order to improve our understanding of the Si(1)-O2(g) system.The measurement campaigns were performed at the Elkem Salten plant in Norway. In addition to fume generation from OLR, the metal temperatures and ladle purge gas amount were recorded. The results of this work suggest that fume generation during OLR results from splashing of the metal and/or oxidation of the metal surface, with oxygen transport to the metal surface being the limiting factor. Other mechanisms of SiO2 formation were investigated, however insignificant.IntroductionOne of the main environmental and economical challenges facing the metallurgical industry is fugitive emissions of both materials and energy. In the production of metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si), refining of the silicon generally takes place through an oxidative ladle treatment (purging with an air-O2 mixture). In the refining process, exposure of silicon to air results in the formation of condensed silica fumes (SiO2) – one of the main sources of fugitive emissions in silicon production plants. The oxidation of liquid silicon, as opposed to solid silicon, has not been widely studied and described in the literature [1], thus a thorough investigation of the oxidation mechanisms, and factors affecting the oxidation reaction rate are essential in order to deal with the problem. In the current work, the rate of liquid silicon oxidation has been studied through industrial measurements of fume generation from refining adles, where the purge gas rate and composition have been varied. The results from these measurements were discussed in light of existing models describing the liquid silicon oxidation kinetics."

The features of the teeter bed separator and its application in the coarse slime separation of Chengjiao coal preparation plant were discussed. The relationship between the coarse slime separation efficiency by TBS and the particle size were studied, and the influence of using TBS on dense medium consumption and oil consumption were investigated, it increased the clean coal yield and the comprehensive recovery of the whole plant, and brought huge economic benefits to Chengjiao coal preparation plant.

The phenomena occurring in the cathode and at the cathode surface of aluminum electrolysis cells are very important in regards to cathode voltage drop and cathode wear. In the current study, laboratory-scale aluminum electrolysis cell cathodes were analyzed by X-ray microtomography. This technique allows an excellent visualization of the distribution of different substances, if their respective X-ray attenuation coefficients are different enough. In the current case, the important difference in the mean atomic number between cryolitic bath and graphitic carbon results in good contrasts. The volumetric bath penetration profile, porosity and impurities distribution in the cathode were thus obtained. Furthermore, metallic impurities and bath heterogeneities were observed at the cathode surface. Observations were also made with Scanning Electron Microscopy - Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS).

"Xanthate is a sulfide collector that has been widely used in flotation for almost a century. It is inexpensive, easy to synthesize and apply, and produces good metallurgy in the right applications. However, a major drawback of xanthate is that it decomposes easily and generates CS2 gas in transportation, storage and operation, which can be harmful to human health. Also, excessive xanthate in tailings pond leads to toxicity of the process water and potential damages to aqua-life systems. New regulations in Ontario require that the TWA (time-weighted-average) value of CS2 in the work place is below 1 ppm, which is 1/10 of the previous limit. The stringent regulation may eventually sweep other regions of Canada with the increased awareness of healthy working conditions and environment protection. Therefore, it becomes very important to find xanthate replacements which will be “green”, i.e., environmentally friendly.In this research work, a systematic procedure is used for collector evaluation using the Sudbury nickel sulfide ores from Vale’s Ontario operations, starting with the collector properties (MSDS) evaluation, followed by batch flotation tests, miniplant tests, plant trials and economic evaluation. It is found that the most promising xanthate replacement is dithiocarbamate.INTRODUCTIONSulfide mineral flotation has been practiced since the early 20th century. Its industrial importance is well recognized as mineral concentrates from flotation can be economically smelted and refined to provide primary metals. Collectors play a vital role in froth flotation. There are reagents possessing both a polar group that binds them to the mineral surface and a nonpolar group that is oriented away from the surface to attach air bubbles. The introduction of xanthate as a sulfide collector in 1925 was a remarkable development in froth flotation (Keller, 1925). It is low cost, easy to synthesize, water soluble, simple to control in application. Most importantly, it has strong capability and usually good selectivity for sulfide mineral flotation, which have been keeping its application prominent for almost a century."

This laboratory work presents a study of the effect of ultrafine grinding on the gold recovery of a highly refractory gold concentrate. The particle size of the concentrate was P80 = 46 µm and the main species present were quartz (28.58%), dolomite (25.63%), pyrite (20.93%), arsenopyrite (15.39%) and 112 g/t gold. After optimizing hydrated lime and lead nitrate additions, standard cyanidation with 1% NaCN, pH = 12.3, 25% S/L permits to recover only 9.4% of the gold. Different particle sizes were submitted to cyanidation. When the concentrate was ground to ultrafine sizes (P80= 4.6 µm), the gold recovery for the same cyanidation conditions increased to 67%, with cyanide consumption of 66.7 kg NaCN/t. Additional tests were performed in order to reduce the cyanide consumption. The reduction of the cyanide concentration in the leaching solution from 1 to 0.5% and the addition of 100 g Pb(NO3)2/t allowed the reduction of the cyanide consumption to 27.6 kg NaCN/t (58% reduction), while maintaining the same gold recovery of 67%. The remaining gold could be present as very fine inclusions or in solid solution in the matrix.

This Bureau of Mines open file report is one in a series of reports written about the Valdez Creek Mining District (VCM D) as a result of the continuing Bureau of Mines mining district evaluation program. This report presents the results of order-of-magnitude mining feasibility studies. The mining feasibility studies were conducted for mineral deposit models that were based on real and hypothetical deposits that occur in the VCMD. A total of 6b mine models were developed for application to the mineral deposit models. The goal of the feasibility study was to determine the monetary value per unit of minable ore that would cause the simulated cash flow for each of 66 mine models to achieve certain pre-defined rates of return for the invested capital.

Choosing the right valve for corrosive, abrasive slurry applications requires exacting analysis and a comprehensive understanding of the complete slurry process. Within the realm of flow control in abrasive and corrosive slurry applications, there is no room for a one-size-fits-all approach. To ensure minimal maintenance, maximum uptime and the lowest overall cost of ownership, the slurry processing toolbox must contain countless alloy and elastomeric pairings ? each carefully targeted to the particular process medium and conditions. This materials selection process is best tackled by turning to expert slurry application engineers and valve product managers who work closely with customers to specify the optimal valve for the given parameters. ?When plant operators and design engineers apply conventional valves in abrasive applications or use metal seated valves or simply apply the wrong valve for a particular flow control situation, it typically leads to rapid valve failure, the potential for hazardous leakage, unexpected shutdowns and costly downtime,? said Cal Cobb, valve products manager for Weir Minerals North America, manufacturer of Isogate slurry valves for service in mining, minerals processing and metallurgical environments.

"The profile of the respondents was that of a professional responsible for communications, community relations or corporate social responsibility programs. By targeting a consistent professional profile it was possible to ensure that most respondents had a similar degree of responsibility and/or decision-making ability related to the application of communication technologies. The research attempted to be inclusive and attention was paid to interview respondents from both genders and from indigenous groups.4, 5 A codebook of 80 themes was developed that highlighted recurring topics; for example, codes were created to identify risks, benefits, policies and learning process of using social media and included topics that were repeatedly emphasized by respondents (i.e. age, efficiency and language). Both manifest coding (i.e. coding of the visible content, such as specific words) and latent coding (i.e. coding of underlying meanings) was undertaken (Creswell [13]). The codes were used in the qualitative analysis using ATLAS.ti software and network views were created to illustrate the relationship between major themes of this research. There are limitations to this research, largely related to the changing nature of the Internet and communication technologies. There is also a geographic limitation to the application of this research because most of the data was gathered primarily from Canadian sources.6 Different levels of Internet penetration, or limited access to computers or mobile devices, and low literacy rates may reduce the applicability of the research in countries with low Internet penetration. A more systematic process to selecting candidates may have helped bring balance to the final list of interview respondents. For example, most of the corporate respondents were from medium and large companies and there was not adequate representation of small mineral exploration companies. The research did not probe into social media applications by different business groups within the mining sector, such as smelting and processing."
