Cyclic behaviour of axially loaded piles has been an issue since studies revealed that the capability to transfer skin friction into the ground is highly depending on the level and the number of load cycles the pile is subjected. It has been shown that degradation of skin friction due to axial cyclic loading leads to accumulating displacements and a severe reduction in pile capacity. In Germany the DIN 1054 as well as the Recommendations of the Working Group 2.1 ?Piles? of the German Geotechnical Society (EA-Pfähle) require the consideration of cyclic loading for the assessment of both the displacements and the capacity. Up to now no broadly accepted design method exists, which enables the engineer to give a reliable judgement on the pile capacity under axial cyclic loading and the displacements respectively. Instead numerous design charts make it possible to distinguish between stable and instable loading levels in order to ensure a design on the safe side. A newly developed design approach based on engineering models is presented which delivers a calculation algorithm for the remaining axial pile capacity after a defined number of load cycles to allow for the analysis of stability of the foundation. Furthermore the computation of accumulating displacements is made possible. The results are verified with pile load tests undertaken at Dunkirk, France and showed that the axial capacity after cyclic loading calculated with the newly developed design approach predicts actual capacity with an accuracy of ±20%.

The Bauer company was founded in 1790 by coppersmith Sebastian Bauer in Schrobenhausen, a small town north-west of Munich. The original workshop business carried out works including repairs to church roofs and brew kettles. Later the company expanded its operations to encompass water pipe installation, which it continued through to the 1980s. In addition to installing water pipes it then also began drilling wells, which were sometimes constructed using very simple methods, such as tripod frames (Figure 1).

"A three-dimensional finite-element heat-transfer model is conducted to predict temperature of hot copper plate in a slab continuous casting mold and the effect of casting speed on temperature difference between copper plate and solidifying shell is simulated in combination with process data. The results show that centre temperature of hot copper surface at casting speed 1.8 m·min-1 and 2.0 m·min-1 are higher than that of 1.6 m·min-1 casting speed 4.7-5.2 °C and 11.2-12.2 °C respectively and temperature is not increased linearly with casting speed. Temperature difference in meniscus between mold and shell is influenced obviously by casting speed and increased 4.0- 6.0 °C with increment of casting speed 0.2 m·min-1• Fluctuation of temperature difference in meniscus is a main reason to deteriorate casting quality as increasing casting speed.IntroductionIn conventional continuous casting of steel, a large amount of sensible and latent heat of molten steel dissipates in primary cooling zone and mold becomes a critical component of caster to govern steel quality, meanwhile, thermal load on mold is increased constantly and environment is also more abominable since high productivity and quality are required and high-effective technologies are applied. So, an in-depth understanding of thermal behavior of mold at high casting speed is essential to design cooling structure and maintain casting stability. Many studies have been carried out to shed light on thermal behavior in mold. Chow et al. [l] applied a mathematical model to heat transfer in billet mold at a high casting speed to give a new taper in order to minimize mold-strand interaction. Thomas et al. [2] researched relation between mold geometry and temperature distribution based on a finite-element heat-transfer model. Lu et al. [3] indicated that slab mold temperature are mainly affected by thickness of copper plate and nickel layer by a heat transfer model. Samarasekera et al. [4, 5] researched temperature of copper plates for both billet and slab molds and effect of a large number of factors ranging from water quality to casting speed. Park and Thomas et al. [6, 7] developed a finite-element thermal-stress model to determine temperature and thermal distortion and stress in both thin and slab molds and O'Connor et al. [8] applied an elastic-plastic-creep finite-element model in a funnel shaped mold to achieve same goals. Cicutti et al. [9] evaluated heat transfer and temperature fluctuation in a slab mold and proposed an expression to predict global heat flux as a function of process parameters and an index to quantify thermal instability. All mentioned above shown that thermal behavior is not only important to casting stability, it is also premise to further understand mechanical behavior in mold."

"Rock wools are mineral fibers composed of amorphous silicates, due to their thermo-acoustic characteristics this material has a broad consumer market in the construction, automotive, and electric-electronics industries. This work studied the recovery of wastes from ornamental rocks (granite and marble) as partial raw materials in the production of rock wools. Residues from granite and marble cuttings are industrial wastes with considerable production and limited applications. These wastes should be appropriately managed because when discharged in rivers or lakes can cause siltation, and also they can cause serious human health problems, such as silicosis. Samples of produced materials with thickness smaller than 500µm were characterized by chemical analyses, XRD, and DTA. Results showed that the rock wools produced using granite or marble wastes have important properties, especially the melting point. This process decreases the extraction of mineral resources and provides a profitable destination for the ornamental rock wastes.IntroductionThe ornamental rocks industry is a sector with large production of wastes. During the granite and marble extraction processes and specifically during the rocks cutting (see Figure 1), approximately 35 tons of powdered rock per month can be produced. These residues should be appropriately managed, because when discharged in rivers, lakes or watersheds, they can cause siltation. Also, these wastes can cause serious human health problems, such as silicosis [1].Currently, the granite and marble wastes are mainly used in civil construction to produce materials in the form of mortar, bricks and tiles. However, due the current produced volumes and the average growth of world production estimated at 6% per year, new applications for these wastes are necessary [2]."

By the end of 2011, the total installed capacity of the ISASMELT? technology will exceed 9 000 000 metric tons per year of feed materials in copper and lead smelters around the world. Commercial plants, operating in Belgium and Germany, are also batch converting copper materials in ISASMELT? furnaces. This TSL technology is equally effective for continuous converting processes, whereupon it is called ISACONVERT?. This paper presents the recently patented ISACONVERT? process for the continuous converting of nickel and Platinum Group Metal (PGM) containing mattes using the calcium ferrite slag system. The paper focuses on the potential application of the ISACONVERT? technology to existing nickel and PGM smelting complexes.

Asoperations demand ever bigger tools, the toll on large mobile mining equipment is high, with structural life often half of that expected. Soft ground conditions predominantly lead to fatigue failure scenarios, poor stability, and inconsistent payload evaluations. These challenges are not solely a concern for Canadian oil sands mines; there are far-reaching implications for surface mining equipment in any poor ground-operating environment. This paper focuses on the basics of payload evaluation, motion response, and a simple estimate of structural life for haulers.

Alternating current electrocoagulation (AC/EC) may be an alternative to chemical coagulation in the thickening of tailings in the mineral, coal and petroleum industries. In the current study, ground silica (d50 as received, 20 µm) served as the model tailings solid with characteristically poor settling behavior. Its natural initial settling rate was 1.6 x 10-3 cm/min. This paper discusses the indirect application of AC/EC via aluminum electrodes to the enhancement of the settling behavior of the silica. ?Indirect AC/EC? means that the silica was coagulated upon dispersion in water that had been treated by AC/EC. The effect of AC/EC retention time on settling behavior is examined and the water chemistry is analyzed. Test results show that the initial settling rate of silica was enhanced by a factor of 4,000 at its maximum of 6.4 cm/min, under the conditions employed. Settling enhancement was achieved upon contact between the AC/EC-treated water and the silica, and the enhanced initial settling rate was dictated by the floc size. The aluminum dosage increased with AC/EC retention time, reaching a maximum concentration that was equivalent to 13.1% of that predicted by Faraday?s law. Complex aluminum ions are considered to have adsorbed onto the silica surface and an adsorption mass ratio of 0.3 mg Al/g silica was the most effective in enhancing settling behavior. Owing to pH change or slow kinetics, aluminum hydroxide precipitation did not lower the ion product ([Al3+][OH-]3) below the KSP of 6.3 x 10-32.

The paper presents the foundation design and construction of a landmark urban redevelopment scheme in central London, UK. The scheme comprises the new Tottenham Court Road Underground station, Crossrail interchange box and associated over-site commercial development. The paper focuses on the design, procurement and construction of large diameter bored piles, up to 68m in depth, which form the foundation support system for the over-site commercial development at Denmark Place. The congestion below ground required an intricate foundation design solution which has been a catalyst for developing innovative load transfer arrangements and has resulted in the advancement of pile construction technology in the UK. The foundation system was also designed to cater for the construction of two significant elements of proposed below ground infrastructure. Selected large diameter piles have been constructed within 1.1m of live underground railway tunnels. An innovative D-shaped pile was constructed in a zone subject to particular spatial constraints. The proposed Crossrail tunnels will be bored within 1m of selected over-site development piles. In addition, a 30m deep excavation forming a new escalator box will be constructed in direct contact with the over-site development piles. The stakeholder engagement process is described together with the foundation design development and buildability assessment. The benefits from early collaboration between the designers and specialist contractors are highlighted. From an analytical design perspective, the entire foundation construction sequence was modelled in detail in order to assess the soil structure interaction and any potential adverse effects on existing elements of underground infrastructure. The results from the three dimensional numerical modelling simulation are compared with field monitoring data.

ABSTRACT: Ultra-class haul trucks operating in oil sand face operational and maintenance issues as a result of soft underfoot conditions (Joseph, 2002). With exposure to frequent high g loading events, tire life is reduced due to sidewall belt fexure and frequent ground contact. Therefore, an improved under-standing of the interaction between tires and oil sand is needed. This paper examines the outcomes of a series of static and cyclic loading tests, performed using a scale tire on rigid, sand, and oil sand surfaces. Geometric predictions are made regarding the footprint area and vertical deformation of an ultra-classtire on similar surfaces.

"Platinum-group minerals (PGM) typically occur in such low concentrations that quantitative mineralogical evaluation is difficult or impossible. The FEI MLA system used by Vale Base Metals Technology Development has been successfully employed to produce large PGM data sets that are statistically robust. The MLA Sparse Phase Liberation mapping routine produces false colored images that accurately document mineral textures, including intergrowths between various platinum group minerals and between PGMs and other tellurides and sulfides. MLA PGM search results can be used in conjunction with mineral chemistry to calculate platinumgroup element distribution to minerals and the MLA PGM images can be used to produce model grade-recovery curves.INTRODUCTIONThe platinum-group minerals (PGM) found in Sudbury area deposits have been extensively catalogued and reviewed by many authors including, but not limited to: Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), Cabri and Laflamme (1984; 1976) and Cabri (1981). The PGM list currently used has 12 minerals summarized in Table 1. As noted by Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), platinum-group minerals in Sudbury are dominated by tellurides, bismuth-tellurides and arsenides, with an absence of platinum-group element (PGE) sulphides or ferro-platinum alloys such as tetraferroplatinum - PtFe."

The challenge in measuring some key variables is certainly an important contributing factor to this situation. Reliable online measurement of varibles, such as the froth depth, bias, gas hold-up, frother concentration, bubble surface area flux, and bubble size distribution, provides opportunities for the application of various advanced control strategies and real-time optimization based on an economic criterion. For several years, Université Laval’sLaboratoire d’observation et d’optimisation des procédés researchers have been working on these opportunities. Pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores can be conducted on ores with high carbonate content using just water or water with alkaline reagents to promote fast kinetics, and suppress the formation of elemental sulphur and CO2. In this work, a fundamental study was conducted to explore the silica-pyrite interaction in the presence of calcium and sodium carbonate. It was found that an alkaline environment increases the pyrite decomposition kinetics on one hand, but on the other dissolves silica, which encapsulates the dissolving pyrite thus hindering ultimately its complete decomposition.

Until recently, almost all of the large-scale North American tunnel projects were excavated one of two ways ? the tried and true drill-and-blast method or with the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM), the hi-tech super-excavators. TBMs enjoyed fast-growing popularity worldwide as TBM manufacturers offered greater technology to meet the demand of the civil tunnel industry in the late 20th century. Recently, though, more tunnel projects, large and small, can thank the brute force of a roadheader for getting the job done.

"Small-punch tests were conducted at 4, 77 and 293 K on three types of austenitic stainless steels JNl, JJl and JK2, which were solution treated, water-quenched and then aged at 923, 973, 1023 and 1073 K for 5 h. Small-punch test energy was employed for the evaluation of the aginginduced embrittlement behavior in these materials. Fracture surface of small punch test specimen for the solution treated steels exhibited a ductile fracture, showing the highest SP test energy values. The presence of intergranular brittle fracture was observed in aged specimens. Smallpunch test energy decreased significantly as the aging process progressed. The highest and lowest decrease in small-punch test energy with aging temperature occurred in JNl and JK2 steels, respectively. The decrease in small-punch test energy showed to examine appropriately the aging-induced embrittlement in these materials. The difference in aging-induced embrittlement behavior for these steels was explained based on the volume fraction of intergranular precipitates in aged samples.IntroductionA high level combination of strength and toughness is required for cryogenic structural materials used in the superconducting magnets of fusion nuclear reactor. This requirement is beyond the capability of conventional austenitic stainless steels [1]. The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) developed new cryogenic JNl, JJl and JK2 austenitic stainless steels. The structure of superconducting magnets is supposed to be constructed by welding thick plates of this kind of steels. Thus, most of the components are exposed to thermal cycles. The slow cooling may cause microstructure changes in both the base material and weld zone. These changes may also decrease the fracture toughness of these materials at cryogenic temperatures. Therefore, it is important to study the effect of thermal aging on fracture toughness behavior for these steels. Konosu et al. [2] carried out a study of the effect of thermal aging on the mechanical properties for JNl steel using tension and fatigue tests. Kwon et al. [3] evaluated the deterioration in fracture toughness at cryogenic temperatures for the isothermally aged JNl steel by means of the Small-Punch (SP) test. No other reports were found about the cryogenic fracture toughness behavior for this kind of steels. To evaluate the cryogenic fracture behavior, the elastic-plastic Jrc value is a good alternative [4,5]; nevertheless, the standard required specimen size makes it difficult to be used for the fracture toughness evaluation in small zones."

"A natural biofoam extracted from the buriti palm tree has shown characteristics for potential substitution of synthetic foams. In the present work, a photoacoustic thermal characterization was performed on buriti biofoam samples. An open photoacoustic cell technique and a photothermal rise method performed under continuous laser illumination were employed in order to determine the thermal diffusivity and the specific heat capacity of such material. In addition to their intrinsic values (finger print), these physical parameters represent the light-into-heat conversion efficiency and the amount of heat stored per unit volume, respectively. The results showed that the buriti biofoam presents thermal properties that permit its use as an effective insulation material.IntroductionSolid foams are very light materials with increasing engineering applications [1]. A natural biofoam obtained from the petiole of the buriti palm tree (Mauritia flexuosa) has been recently investigated [2-4]. The evaluation of the buriti biofoam properties and the characterization of its microstructural aspects have shown that this biofoam has a potential as a new engineering material with very low density. Additionally, its reduced open porosity and low absorbed humidity revealed a promising material for packing and floating applications. In fact, this buriti biofoam, extracted from the palm tree natural of the north region of Brazil, is being used by the low income population as a modest substitute for Styrofoam® [1].As a potential insulating material, the buriti foam needs to be characterized in terms of its thermal and acoustic properties. A preliminary investigation [3] on the thermal behavior of this natural biofoam by thermogravimetric analysis, TGA, and its derivative, DTG, as well as differential scanning calorimetry, DSC, revealed parametric conditions associated with water loss and structural decomposition. Both the surface humidity and the release of hydration water were determined. Different decomposition events were attributed to both, more rigid as well as to more flexible molecular segments. Table 1 depicts technical data obtained so far for the buriti biofoam. These data are compared to those corresponding to Styrofoam®."

The management of critical resource inventories is an important productivity lever and a significant risk factor?risk in the sense that poor resource availability lends itself to disempowerment of workers, unsafe work practices, wasted spending (high unit costs),and poor quality of work (including mining waste/rework). Most underground platinum mines experience lost blasts that directly lead to reduced productivity. In most surveyed shafts, 30% of lost blasts can be attributed to shortages of critical material and/or equipment. The problem is prevalent despite the existence of conventional transitory surface and underground stores. This paper discusses the introduction of buffer stores as a complementary materials storage system in order to improve health and safety in mines as well as reduce lost blasts. Both quantitative and qualitative results have shown that buffer stores result in dramatic improvements in productivity and are readily acceptable by stakeholders. The deep sea hydrothermal deposits are one of the most prospecting resources, and various works to develop these mines are now underway. There are also various methods for the pre-site survey of the mines: acoustic survey, electro-magnetic survey, and others. However, as a precise method at the final survey, drilling/coring is indispensable to confirm the three-dimensional distribution and to grasp the dignity of the ores for the final decision of industrialization. This drilling/coring at the final survey is done at many points with distance of 15~25m between each point for on-land deposits. This means that 1km by 1km square area requires (1,000m/25m)2 ~ (1,000m/15m)2 = 1,600 ~ 4,500 holes. The drilling/coring depths will be around 30m or more for the hydrothermal deposits. This depth seems very shallow, but because the stratum is very brittle and is very difficult to core, the average core recovery ratio is around 50%, and 0% core recovery happens very often. Thus, the indispensable work of coring for grasping the dignity of ores is a very difficult work although the coring depth is shallow, and also the required number of holes is enormous. Conventional drilling/coring method on the ocean is to use drillship. However, the cost is very huge. Recently a new technique has come out which is to use remotely controlled drilling machine on seafloor. This machine seems to have a very good performance. However, it is reported that the available inclination of the seafloor where the machine sits on must be less than 15 degrees. The sea floor inclinations of active hydrothermal vents area are usually very steep and slopes of 45 degrees or more are prevailing and it seems very hard to carry out drilling/coring for the machine at these steep slopes, although it is impossible to mine the ore at these areas because the temperature is too high to work there. The inclination of the sea floor at the dead or paused hydrothermal vents area where ore recovery is possible may be not so steep, and the machine may work well. However, the required number of holes is still a very heavy burden. In order to solve these problems, the author proposes a new concept of drilling/coring system operated from a conventional research ship. This concept is still a desk plan, but the author wants to realize this system at any means.

The objective of this work was to understand the mechanisms of action of additives, such as thiourea, that enhance gold leaching in thiosulfate solution. The leaching reaction and surface passivation were investigated using linear sweep voltammetry. Leaching currents were determined using analysis of current-potential curves and the mixed potential theory. The gold-electrolyte interface was further characterized with surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The results show how thiourea prevents formation of oxysulfur compounds, which passivate the gold surface. Other molecules such as 3- m ercaptopropionic acid and L-cysteine were also studied as possible additives to prevent passive layer formation.

"Leaching solution prepared from spent battery materials contains large quantities of valuable metals, such as Cu, Ni, Co, Mn and Fe. Therefore, recovery of valuable metals from acidic polymetallic aqueous solutions is of great importance for every plant. In this work, a method is introduced of recovery of Ni, Co and Mn from polymetallic solution prepared by leaching spent battery material. The basic concept includes copper was removed through replacement by iron powder followed by iron precipitation in goethite method. The experimental results show that Cu can be removed 99% at least through replacement by Fe powder, and the removal of Fe can achieve 99% by goethite method. At the same time, the loss of Ni, Co and Mn are about 2%, 3 % and 2%, respectively. The process of differential removal of metals can be selected as the treatment alternative that combines simplicity, efficiency and reliability with low capital and maintenance costs. The purified solution which only contains Ni, Co and Mn can be used to prepare NixCoyMnz ternary system precursor.1 IntroductionNickel and Cobalt are very important metals which are applied in many fields, such as energy material and support material for some new material field. The world demands for such metals is progressively increasing, while raw resources are being depleted and with the constraints raised by the Law and related legislation assigned to protect the environment from hazardous wastes in the world. Nowadays study on reutilization of waste materials has great significance for achieving secondary resources recycling and preventing environmental pollution. There are many hydrometallurgy methods applied for dealing with these wastes, while they usually contain large quantities of valuable metals, such as Cu, Co, Mn and Ni, as well as impurities, such as Fe, Zn, and etc. Therefore, proper treatment of these leaching solutions prior to their discharge is of great importance, so that the contained valuable metals can be recovered.Separation and extraction of metals from leaching solution can use some methods through solvent extraction[l,2], ion exchange[3,4], precipitation with sulfide[ 5] or alkali[ 6] and electrolytic recovery[?]. Among the appropriate treatment alternatives, replacement and differential precipitation is the most attractive treatment that combines simplicity, efficiency and reliability with low capital and maintenance costs."

The Laronde mill was commissioned in 1988 and has been treating the Laronde Perim ore since 2000. The Laronde plant, situated in the Abitibi region of Quebec, has experienced mill expansions to accommodate 7500 mtpd and to recover gold and silver as well as important amounts of base metals (Cu, Zn, Pb). Ten sequential metallurgical and environmental processes are responsible for metals recovery and process viability. Over 200,000 ounces of gold, 4,5 million ounces of silver, 7000 tonnes of copper, and 78,000 tonnes of zinc are produced annually. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking high wade (35-45 Wt Au) pyrite sulphide concentrate (TCGO) for gold extraction at a newly constructed treatment plant, increasing gold output at Laronde by 40,000 ounces. In 2009, the high gold wade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the Laronde plant increasing output by 120,000 ounces of gold. TCGO and Lapa productions are forecasted until 2018 and 2015 respectively, with known reserves of each mine. Today, up to 140 permanent employees run and optimise the Laronde plant operation. As a result, Laronde has intricacies intrinsic to a large and varied operation. The paper will outline the metallurgical highlights, challenges, and future outlook related to the treatment of each ore type (Laronde, TCGO, and Lapa)
