"In Italian building market one of the reasons that often stop building contractors from not taking into consideration the possibility to recycle rubble from building is represented by the increase of costs for rubble separation. However the recycling of C&DW can also allow a decrease in disposal costs and a reduction in raw materials requirement.In this paper the results of a testing conducted on a case study through economic and technical analyses are presented.Results highlight that a wise management of demolition and disposal processes can generate a remarkable saving and that it is possible, on the other side, to achieve environmental benefits such as reduction of raw material consumption and dump life lengthening.IntroductionTwo major factors have been found to have considerably influenced the market of recycled aggregates in Europe and Italy: the EU and national regulations and environmental awareness. The market of recycled aggregate has grown in countries with limited natural resources.Waste disposal has also been one of the top EU political and environmental priorities. In the complex interaction between human activities and the environment, waste is proved to be one of the most environment-degrading products.In 1972 the European Commission introduced measures on waste reduction, reuse and recycling. In 2006, directive 2006/12/EC (European Commission) on waste was issued. It covers the scope of minimizing the waste, prevent hazardous waste, maximize reclamation, reuse, recycling and energy-recovery.No specific directive refers to management and recycling of construction and demolition wastes. However, in 1992 the European Commission listed debris among waste management priorities because of its growing amount.Only recently, effective environmental policies have been implemented in Italy, even though relevant environmental issues started rising as early as the beginning of the 1970s. In the 1980s the Government undertook the first significant measures to handle the waste management."

The synthesis of Mn-Zn ferrite powder from spent zinc-carbon batteries was investigated using a series of physical treatment, sulfuric acid leaching and coprecipitation. Physical separation methods such as crushing, magnetic separation and sieving were applied to generate a non-magnetic material of 8- mesh undersize for subsequent leaching process. The 8-mesh undersize of the spent zinc-carbon batteries was assayed 23.9% Mn, 14.9% Zn, and 4% Fe. Metal extractions obtained in sulfuric acid leaching at the solid/liquid ratio of 1:10, 2 M H2SO4, and 60? with 6 vol.% H2O2 addition were 97.9% Mn, 98.0% Zn and 55.2% Fe. The leach liquor was finally adjusted to the Mn:Zn:Fe mole ratio of 1:1:4 suitable for producing MnZnFe4O8 ferrite powder by the addition of Mn, Zn and Fe sulfates followed by pH control. A co-precipitation test for Mn-Zn ferrite powder was performed at 80?, O2 gas flowing at 1.3 L/min. As a result of co-precipitation, Mn-Zn ferrite nanoparticles in 20 nm size with spinel structure were successfully synthesized. The saturation magnetizations of Mn-Zn ferrite powder (Mn1-xZnxFe2O4) were determined to be 39-91 emu/g with various zinc contents (X=0.2-0.8).

"Recycling of aluminum scrap and dross is significant in the economic and energy saving, as well as in the environmental protection. Recovery of metal aluminum depends on many factors. The aim of this work is to investigate experimentally the metal recovery under different conditions. The processing of aluminum dross was carried out in DC electric arc rotary furnace. The optimal technological parameters are determined. It is turned out that the presence of crushing refractory bodies during the processing of the aluminum dross in the rotary furnace increases the degree of aluminum recovery with about 10 %.IntroductionCompact and granular aluminum dross are used for the fulfillment of the experiments, which were obtained by salt free melting of aluminum scrap. The only preliminary preparation of the compact dross is crushing them into proper size, in compliance with the size of the opening for furnace charging and removing of fraction – 1 mm. The granular dross is subjected to sieving also with the purpose to remove the fraction – 1 mm. In these conditions the content of the metal phase in the compact dross is 72 %, and in the granular – 77 %. The processing of aluminum dross was carried out in DC electric arc rotary furnace (Figure 1).The purpose of this research is to investigate experimentally the metal recovery under different conditions and to establish the dominant factors, which need to be controlled."

"The Valle de Aburrá area, corresponds to the city of Medellín and neighboring municipalities, with more than 3 million people. The area generates a sizable amount of solid waste, which has been taken to landfills for the last 20 years. This paper proposes a model for public policy making which considers the cost and benefit of different alternatives to handle the wastes in the coming 20 years. Combinations of several alternatives: Recycling, waste reduction, waste separation, incineration, land filling with lixiviate treating and gas energy recovery, and organic waste composting are considered and modeled and the results presented as a contribution for a more rational approach to policy making than the one currently being employed.IntroductionThe author, working for INDISA S.A., acted as a consultant for the direction of planning of the Empresas Varias de Medellín in 2004. This entity has the responsibility for the handling of the solid wastes of the city of Medellín and some of the neighboring municipalities. At the present time more the 700.000 annual tons of waste are taken to the site of La Pradera, located in very rainy location (3.000 mm of precipitation per year), with complex in topography and very far away from the sources of the waste. During the work the author detected important problems that should be addressed, as follows:Lack of adequate technical administration and resources. The entity did not count with sufficient human resources to focus on the appropriate technical handling of the solid waste. The organization worked mostly with independent contractors, lacking enough coherence and integration. The internal workload was too large for the few people who had technical responsibility and this gave rise to attention problems. It is important to have clear technical procedures, technical know how and human resources, continuity in the activities. It is important to have a clear capacity to plan, to study, to make tests and monitoring, to pursuit and develop ideas, to optimize the processes and to introduce changes, to respond to environmental authorities, to the communities and to mass media and to handle the contractors. All this was basically lacking. In the case of the handling of the sanitary filling of La Pradera, for example, although the people in charge were very able and dedicated, the magnitude of the task was too large and the resources they had were insufficient. As a result, the site had at the time of the study, problems with thousands of vultures, lack of immediate cover up for the waste, uncontrolled leaching, the area being dirty and little attractive, despite being called a park."

Dispersed gem corundum is mined from placers, commonly from basalt fields, as occurs along eastern Australian and Asian continental margins. New laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis (LA-ICP-MS) of Australian corundum allows genetic distinctions among these suites and gives clues to their primary lithospheric sources prior to basaltic delivery. Bimodal corundum suites at Barrington Tops, Cudgegong-Gulgong-Macquarie River and Yarrowitch, New South Wales (NSW), include lower Ga, higher Mg æmetamorphicÆ and higher Ga, lower Mg æmagmaticÆ groups. The Barrington Tops æmetamorphicÆ corundum is more Fe-rich (av 4500 - 7100 ppm) than Cudgegong- Macquarie River equivalents (av Fe 1800 - 2100 ppm). Yarrowitch corundum is relatively low in Fe, Ti and Cr. Along with other eastern Australian data (north-east Tasmania; New England, NSW) and from gem fields elsewhere, the combined trace element and O isotope data, reveal considerable geographic and genetic variations within the corundum suites. A few corundum groups contain noticeable Be, Sn, Ta, Nb, a particular genetic message that also precludes easy distinction of treated corundum in the gem trade. Expanding geochemical, inclusion and geochronological data on gem corundum hold promise for characterising derivative gem corundum on both geographic and genetic features.

We learn very early that stories entertain us, but also give us the ?rules? about what is expected of us and how to make meaning of our experiences. Stories are integral to our lives, and have great power to change or influence how we think or how we react. They are an innate part of how we learn, and have obvious benefits to trainers or educators who are trying to impact what and how we learn. This paper and presentation discuss the social and cultural power of stories, and how they have been used to develop training for skilled blue-collar workers. Included will be examples as well as suggestions for trainers on where to find stories, what type of stories to pay attention to, and how to use them to improve occupational safety training.

Spray-on liners used in the mining industry for ground support and stabilisation applications are either cement based (æshotcreteÆ) or polymer based (æthin spray-on linersÆ). Some thin spray-on liners are a blend of both polymer and cement (eg Tekflex). A small number of thin spray-on liners (TSLs) have been trialled in Australia as potential replacements for steel mesh in roadways and other underground mining applications; however, they were found to cure slowly and the cured coatings became brittle after an extended time in place. The University of Wollongong in collaboration with the Australian coal mining industry has shown that a viable polymer-based alternative to steel mesh in underground roadway support applications can be developed to eliminate the use and handling of steel mesh. The work to date has: established the feasibility of developing polymeric alternatives to steel mesh in underground roadway support applications; identified the physical and material constraints to be endured by any new polymeric skin reinforcement system by measuring the mechanical properties of steel mesh; identified materials that can be spray applied; and demonstrated that polymer mechanical properties can be optimised to produce similar mechanical properties (elastic modulus, yield stress, elongation-at-break, etc) to steel mesh. The identified materials will: allow the face support cycle to be fully automated, or at least remotely operated and installed; remove personnel from the immediate face area; and substantially improve underground roadway development rates.

"During metallurgical processing of non-ferrous metals, smelting residue (inc. smelter slag, flue gas and so on) is inevitably generated as secondary product.In this research, some experimental feasibilities were investigated to recover/remove Cu and As from the residue. Primarily, the removal of As and volatilized materials from the residue was examined by pyrometallurgical treatment (dry-process). In the second stage after treating the residue with a dry-process, leaching and solvent extraction as hydrometallurgical treatments (wet-process) were also investigated by using H2SO4 solution as a two stage leaching treatment, to dissolve various metals from the leach residue. Then, solvent extraction was examined by using LIX-84I as an extractant to recover and separate Cu from impurities from the final (2nd) leached solution. For the leaching stages, the removal of 90 % As and the leaching rate of 85 % Cu could be achieved by 0.25 mol/l and 1.0 mol/l H2SO4 solution, respectively. On the other hand, the extraction of over 90 % Cu and stripping was carried out by solvent extraction. 1. The smelting residue includes some useful metals and undesired toxic materials; Cu, Pb, Ca and As, etc.In Japan there is one undisclosed place stockpiled with 10,000 ton of smelting residue from abandoned smelters about 25 years ago. Therefore it is necessary to reduce the residual amount for space and environmental protection including water treatment by separating and removing toxic materials."

"The high density sludge process (HDS) is a commercially proven acid rock drainage wastewater treatment process that is based on acid neutralization and metal precipitation. Previous studies have established that metal removal efficiencies in precipitation-based wastewater treatment applications can be improved through metal ion adsorption on ferrihydrite and/or aluminummodified ferrihydrite. This study was conducted specifically to determine whether the metals removal efficiencies at an existing industrial facility could be improved by promoting ferrihydrite and/or aluminum-modified ferrihydrite precipitation during the pH adjustment stages of the HDS process. The metal tenors of the treated wastewater samples are compared with those obtained through baseline experiments, which were designed to simulate the conventional HDS operation. The subject metals were: aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, and zinc.IntroductionThe HDS process is commercially proven ARD wastewater treatment technology that involves raising the wastewater pH by adding hydrated lime, caustic soda, or another alkaline substance. In addition to neutralizing the acidity, many dissolved metals precipitate as pH is elevated. Waste volume is minimized by capturing and immobilizing the precipitated solids.However, ARD streams characteristically contain multiple dissolved metal species. The response of various metals to pH adjustment in the HDS process is neither uniform nor quantitative, so minor to trace concentrations typically remain in the treated wastewater following solid-liquid separation. The effectiveness and applicability of the process would be improved if a means were found to further reduce the metal concentrations.Previous research and industrial applications have proven that metal ion adsorption on ferrihydrite (FH) and/or aluminum-modified ferrihydrite (AMF) increase metal removal efficiencies. Ferrihydrite and AMF are considered ideal for cation and anion adsorption from an aqueous solution at the appropriate pH [1]. Ferrihydrate adsorption of dissolved heavy metals is widely practiced throughout the world [2, 3]. It is established that FH and AMF effectively adsorb As contained in aqueous solutions [4]. Arsenic removal by adsorption on FH is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Best Demonstrated Available Technology [5]. Twidwell and Leonhard also demonstrated that heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn) are effectively removed from solution by coprecipitation/adsorption using AMF and FH [6]."

The Earth?s population is approaching 6.6 billion people. More than half live in urban areas. And, as those figures continue to grow, the need to make wise use of the world?s natural resources as well as its living space will also grow. Thus, the concept of sustainable development ? meeting the needs of the current generation while preserving resources for future generations. The use of underground space is only one part of the sustainable development concept. But it is an important one. Tunnels and underground space are environmentally friendly and contribute significantly to sustainable development. But it takes years to plan and build tunnels and other underground infrastructure. And the demand for infrastructure in the world?s mega cities has grown significantly. In December, about 100 people representing several developed and developing nations spent a day at the United Nations (UN) in New York City discussing the future of underground space development throughout the world. The meeting was put on by the UN?s Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). The conference was titled ?The Use of Underground Space as an Unexpected Solution for Promoting Sustainable Development.? Its aim was to promote practical solutions to the use of underground space and tunnels as feasible alternatives to promote sustainable development throughout the world. A panel of speakers from government, academia, the UN and the ITA stressed that development is not sustainable without infrastructure. And, as the world?s population grows, there is now an urgent requirement to efficiently plan for the use of underground space to preserve it for the future benefit of mankind. The benefits of the use of underground space are many, they said. Among them: ? Tunnels channel clean water in and waste water out. This promotes health and sustainability worldwide, particularly in developing countries. ? The use of tunnels and underground space helps conserve energy and increases its efficient use ? the use of tunnels cuts commuting time and so saves energy. ? Tunnels, microtunnels and other underground structures promote the more efficient use of space in large cities ? the bulk storage of water, fuel and other goods. ? Underground structures are subject to less stress than surface structures, making them safe havens for natural and man-made hazards, including earthquakes. And, because underground structures are more durable, lifecycle costs are less than surface structures. ? Underground structures promote the multiple use of available land. Land owner-ship at several layers increases land use and provides more usable space. Han Admiraal is director of the Center for Underground Construction in the Netherlands. He said that urban planners need a new vision concerning the use of underground space. Going underground protects historical and archaeological surface facilities, he said. Underground space use can also protect populations located in adverse climates. And sensitive environmental areas on the surface can also be protected from development. In addition to the transportation of people, freight and water, underground development can also store water, as well as provide storage for waste, hazardous materials, carbon dioxide and geothermal energy. The upshot of this new awareness and vision for under-ground space is that its use should be considered before surface development, Admiraal said. And planners and developers are placing more emphasis on underground space development as part of their overall development plans for urban areas. That was not always the case, he said. In the past, underground space was not considered until after the surface space had run out, he said.

Over the years, screen bowl centrifuges have been widely used for dewatering fine coal in coal preparation plants in the United States and elsewhere. Its popularity is attributed to its relatively low cost, its high capacity of providing low moisture content product and its relative ease of operation and maintenance. It is generally recognized in the engineering and scientific communities that screen bowl centrifuges provide some degree of particle size separation while dewatering fine coal in a common application. However, the extent of differential partitioning of coarse and fine particles achievable by a screen bowl centrifuge has not been systematically studied in the past. The present investigation was aimed at conducting a parametric study using a statistically designed experimental program to better understand and optimize the size classification performance of a screen bowl centrifuge. A continuously operating screen bowl centrifuge having a bowl diameter of 0.5 m was used for this study at the Illinois Coal Development Park. Three key operating parameters, i.e., feed flow rate, feed solid content and pool depth, were varied to conduct a total of 17 experiments using a three-level factorial test matrix. Some of the best size separation performances achieved in this study may be described as having an imperfection value of 0.13 at an effective separation size (d50c) of 38 µm and an imperfection value of 0.27 at an effective separation size (d50c) of 2.8 µm. Due to an effective separation of ultrafine high ash materials, the ash content of the screen bowl feed was reduced from 22.3% to a minimum of 8.84% with a combustible recovery of 84.1% and an ash rejection of 71.6%. A higher combustible recovery of 92.1% was achieved at a product ash content of 12.5% with a d50c of 2.8 µm and imperfection of 0.27.

It is anticipated that many future uranium mines in Australia will be using the in situ leaching mining process. It is fair to say that close to one third of uranium production will be generated by this method, whilst the other two thirds will fall on the uranium generated from hard rock mining and other mining methods, such as traditional open cut mining. For other types of deposits the in situ leaching mining method will remain the best technological, commercial and environmental alternative. It is important to identify and prevent all risks involved in uranium mining. The expertise in this subject is limited. Over the years there was only one mine using the in situ leaching process for uranium extraction in Australia. Computer simulation of propagation of leachate during and after the uranium in situ leaching is a crucial factor, not only for addressing the environmental concerns, but also for the most efficient recovery of the deposit. The decontamination can be modelled for a period of up to 100 years, with the acid neutralisation forecast for a period of up to 400 years. The results of the modelling are paramount for definition of the reserves, efficiency of the mining method and the environmental impact statement. The accuracy of the hydrogeological modelling and carefully selected environmental management program enables a mining company to quantify and minimise the impact of the mining activities on the regional aquifer and to prevent environmental disasters. In the study, the completed hydrogeological model allowed the client, the authorities and the community to make an informed decision about the environmental impact of the in situ leaching of uranium. In particular, the model proved that neither during the mining, nor during the neutralisation the toxic elements would interact with the local catchment area.

The paper describes the main drive systems of an iron ore pelletizing plant and related important design aspects. It is shown how today?s drive systems provide the desired flexibility for the process and lead to high energy efficiency and system reliability. With respect to electric drives expansion projects have many technical issues in common with green-field installations. However, there are aspects where important, distinct differences occur. It is shown which considerations for selecting and sizing drive systems for such a plant as well as for integrating them into an overall plant control concept need to be taken into account. Besides the design of the drive systems a key aspect for such an expansion project is the network interaction. Harmonics levels at different points in the plant network need to be checked carefully with simulations during the design phase to avoid problems later-on during operation. The power factor compensation and the harmonic filtering of the new production line cannot be designed independently of the already existing plant. The paper highlights areas where problems could occur and which points need to be paid attention to when a plant is expanded.

"In this study, copper adsorption by orange peel which was chemically treated with sodium hydroxide was investigated. The morphological and chemical characteristics of the adsorbent were evaluated by spectroscopy and N2-adsorption techniques. Equilibrium isotherms and kinetics were obtained and the effects of solutions pH, adsorbent concentrations and temperature were studied in batch experiments. Equilibrium was well described by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms and kinetics was found to fit pseudo-second order type adsorptions kinetics. According to the Langmuir equation, the maximum adsorption capacities (qm) for Cu(II) was 50.25 mg·g-1 at pH 5.3. With the temperature increased from 16 to 60°C, copper removal decreased. The loaded adsorbent was regenerated using HCl solution and could be used repeatedly at five cycles with little loss of adsorption capacity. The results show additional chemical treatment of the adsorbent by NaOH, is favor of improving the adsorption capacity. Introduction Increased use of metals and chemicals in manufacture industries has resulted in generation of large quantities of effluent that contains high level of toxic heavy metals and it poses environmental-disposal problems due to its non-degradable, persistence nature and accumulation throughout the food chain [1, 2]. Copper is known to be a commonly used heavy metal. This metal, which found many useful applications in our life, is very harmful if charged into natural water resources and may pose finally a serious health hazard. Many methods, such as chemical precipitation, ion exchange, reverse osmosis and adsorption, etc., have been used for heavy metal ions removal from various aqueous solutions. In recent years, there has been considerable interests in use of biological materials including algae, bacteria, fungi, agricultural by-products and residues as adsorbents to remove toxic metals from aqueous solutions by adsorption [3-8]. Adsorption process has been extensively used to remove copper from aquatic medium using low cost adsorbents such as peanut husks [9], plant materials [10] and cellulose materials [11]. Among them, agricultural by-products and biomass are relatively cheap and show very high adsorption capacities. However, to apply untreated agricultural by-products as adsorbents has the disadvantages such as low adsorption capacity, high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological chemical demand (BOD) as well as total organic carbon (TOC), due to the release of soluble organic compounds contained in the plant materials such as lignin, tannin, pectin and cellulose, into the solutions [12-14]."

In order to improve vibrations from quarry blasting, a new technique and timing pattern was established and applied to the particular geology. By shooting a single representative borehole one full second ahead of the production blast, a signature waveform can be isolated and analyzed. Multiple productionsignature blasts were performed. Encroaching residences require quarries to adjust their blasting techniques to reduce vibrations and raise frequencies. A signature hole inherently poses problems to quarries. Blasting one single hole from a production bench poses safety issues to wall stability; vibration issues to close neighbors; and budget issues to the quarry operator. Results showed that the new timing pattern reduced vibrations through timing optimization without a loss in quarry production. Therefore, this technique of vibration analysis employing a production-signature hole is successful in creating a timing pattern that meets the quarry’s goals.

Cobalt is recovered from square type of spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) containing 5~20 % Co, 5~7 % Li, 5~10 % Ni, 15% organic chemicals, and 7% plastics together with Cu, Al, Fe, and Mn. The waste LIB was prepared by physical treatment. After screening, the crushed LIBs were separated to +8 mesh, -8/+16 mesh, and -16 mesh powder. Among these, -16 mesh powder was selected for leaching. The leaching test was investigated at 2 M H2SO4, 6 vol.% H2O2, reaction temperature 60 ?, agitation speed 300 rpm, solid/liquid ratio 50 g/ 500 ml, reaction time 1 h. The leaching efficiency of cobalt was more than 99 % and its concentration was 24.9 g/L. For removing of impurities such as copper, iron, and aluminum in the leaching solution before cobalt solvent extraction, the impurities were eliminated by pH control with alkali solution. For selective extraction of cobalt, the aqueous phase removed impurities was equilibrated with different volumes of 0.4 M Cyanex 272 saponified of 50 %. Extraction efficiency of cobalt was about 80 % at first step. Separation coefficient (ßCo/Li) of cobalt and lithium extractions was 206.5. Over 9.0 % of pure cobalt sulfate solution was obtained after stripping with H2SO4 solution.

"PET bottles are separated and subsequently crushed into flakes. Except for PET, these flakes contain PE, PVC, paper, adhesives, beverages remainders and mineral impurities. PET itself usually is a glycol and terephthalic and isophthalic acid polymer.The suggested method consists in PET flakes crystallization at 255°C. In the meantime, volatile substances evaporate and PVC disintegrates. Formed crystalline PET is crushed into small particles and then is subject to the basic hydrolysis at an atmospheric pressure. In addition to lye solution, glycol is added in the hydrolysis. Water is eliminated by boiling, which gives rise to suspension of sodium salt of terephthalic acid and glycol. The suspension is skimmed and the filtered glycol is vacuum distilled. Pure glycol is then the distillation product.Crystals are dissolved in water and the solution is filtered, which eliminates PE and impurities. Electrodialysis removes pure terephthalic acid salt from the solution. Glycol solution is returned to the hydrolysis. Terephthalic acid is precipitated by a mineral acid. Subsequently, it is washed and dried. The filtrate is separated through electrodialysis to lye and acid. The lye gets back to the hydrolysis and the acid is used for precipitation. Terephthalic acid and glycol are products in a “polymer grade” quality. The waste is a part of washing waters, distillation residues after glycol regeneration and a filter cake after the terephthalate solution filtration."

The design, construction and monitoring of the deep excavation support for the basement of a large-scale commercial development in Cavan, Ireland is presented. Excavation area was adjacent to existing structures and retained height H varied between 4.0m ? 11.0m. In areas where excavation depth H < 5.0m, wall was designed as cantilevered section. However in sections where 5.0m = H = 11m, additional wall supports were required for serviceability reasons. Traditionally, designers often provide additional wall support through the use of tie-back ground anchors, raking props and braces. On the current project, the main contractor was not in support of the use of temporary props so as to maximise working space, while owners of adjacent properties disapproved the use of tie-backs. The limited set-back between the wall line and site boundary also contributed to the complexity of the project. A rare alternative solution has been adopted. This novel approach involved buttressing the wall with steeply raking bored tension piles at regular intervals along the wall. Comparison of the monitored deflections in the cantilevered sections with those recorded at sections where tension piles were used shows the novel solution to be safe and quite effective. This approach is also considered to be more economical when compared with ground anchorage and propping.

The total amount of ferrous slag generated in the U.S. is about one-third the amount of iron ore mined, thus ferrous slag can be considered a significant mineral body for processing. Steelmaking slag contains up to 30 wt.% metal of which only the >25mm fraction is commonly recovered. A grinding study was conducted of BOF, EAF, and LMF slags using the Bond Work Index method to determine grindability to 106µm. Work Index values obtained were 13.8-24.9 kWh/ST, depending upon the slag type and composition. Steel particles were magnetically recovered from the crushed and ground samples for size-by-size analysis, yielding up to 18 wt.% of the slag weight recovered as magnetic. The recovered material, as characterized by inert gas melting, was found to be 61-96 wt.% metallic.

Previous work in which rock properties and blasting parameters (geometry, charging and timing) were reported together with truck filling times, is taken as a starting point for a thorough analysis of the influence of the former on the mucking velocity. The experimental set was composed by 11 blasts made in an open pit mine. Non-parametric, distribution-free statistics is applied. The mucking rates (in bank cubic meters per unit of bucket volume and per hour) appear to be clearly dependent on the explosive energy and powder factor, both magnitudes combined as energetic powder factor (energy per unit of rock volume). The mucking rate is a non-monotonic function of such factor in the range of the blasts analyzed. The determination of the function is optimum when the fraction of the explosive below grade is not considered and when the explosive energy is qualified as that delivered at a partial detonation regime. Different types of loaders seem appropriate for different energy levels. At low levels both front loaders and rope shovels obtain small productivities without a statistically significant difference in their performance. At high energy levels, front loaders qualify higher than rope shovels. Mucking velocities can be equally small at low energy powder factors and at high ones if rope shovels are involved.
