The use of base grouting (tip grouting) to enhance the axial capacity of drilled shaft foundations can achieve improvements in economy and reliability for many types of projects and soil profiles. Recent experiences on a range of different construction projects in the Southeastern U.S. illustrate the most attractive opportunities for utilizing this technique and some limitations of the method. The quality assurance provided by measurements obtained during post grouting the pile toe is another important aspect favoring its use; the base grouting is shown to identify weaker piles and provide a means of remediating some deficiencies so that increased foundation reliability is achieved. This paper provides an overview of the methods used to evaluate and design for base grouted shafts along with lessons learned from several case histories.

The solution of set of equations for the bottom zone presented by a condition of a thermodynamic equilibrium, namely, an equilibrium constant of wustite reduction by carbon oxide, material and thermal the balances, supplemented by the equation of the heat balance for the top zone, allows to calculate the base indices of blast furnace smelting. The calculated indices are extreme accessible at the given parameters of charge and blast. Application of actual degrees of the use of gas instead of equilibrium allows the calculations of actual indices of the blast furnace smelting process.

Because of their great diversity, minerals and their derived products are necessary for almost every aspect of life. The European Technology Platform on Sustainable Mineral Resources (ETP SMR) unites hundreds stakeholders from industry, the re-search community, public authorities, the financial community, regulators, consumers and civil society around the major technological challenges to the sector, in order to jointly act towards a common vision. The Platform will contribute to strengthening one of the fundamental pillars of the European economy and society. The Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) of the ETP SMR is designed to act as a realistic and inspirational guide to defining a comprehensive research programme that will mobilise stake-holders and ensure that European competences are at the forefront of science & technology worldwide. It will help to stimulate investment in research and provide guidance for policy options. The SRA shows the way the mineral industry has to proceed in forthcoming decades if it is to serve European society in the way necessary. Without a strong European minerals industry, the future development of the EU economy risks to be curbed significantly.

Cable shovel requires continuous monitoring through excavation to achieve reliability, longevity and economic usage. The operating environment and the stress and deformation fields on the front-end assembly must continually be monitored to avoid random fatigue failure. In this paper, the authors advance frontiers of cable shovel reliability through real-time stress and deformation monitoring during excavation. Cable shovel boom stress and deformation analysis are developed using a combination of flexible and rigid body approach. A virtual prototype is developed to simulate the cable shovel excavation in oil sands and to examine the motion, stress and local deformation of the boom. A numerical example is used examine cable shovel boom durability using stress and deformation fields simulation. The results show that stress and deformation are large around the joint between the upper body and the boom. The simulation of the effect of material properties on boom deformation shows that the deformation is larger in hard formation than in soft formation. The study provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

A study was carried out to compare the environmental impacts of the two major iron ore agglomeration processes, sintering and pelletising, using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The following agglomeration processing routes, with the fuel options shown, were investigated:sintering with combined natural gas/coke breeze or charcoal as fuel, grate-kiln pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel, and straight-grate pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel. Inventory data for each process derived from the literature, and in some instances supplemented by additional simulations and calculations, were used in the study and the environmental impact categories considered were gross energy requirement (GER), global warming potential (GWP) and acidification potential (AP). The results of the study showed that the GER, GWP and AP for a sinter plant are higher than those for a pellet plant for the same amount of metallic iron in the agglomerated products. These results are partly due to higher consumption of solid fuel and flux in the sintering process. However, it should be pointed out that the study only compared substantially fluxed sinters with acid pellets that may require additional flux (and hence potentially more greenhouse gases emissions) to be a balanced blast furnace feedstock. Extending the LCA to the blast furnace process stage was beyond the scope of the current study. Within the sinter plant, the sintering stage itself is the largest contributor to the GER, GWP and AP. In the case of pellet plant, the pellet induration stage is the largest contributor to the various environmental impacts. The GER and GWP of a straight-grate pellet plant are marginally higher than those of a grate-kiln pellet plant due to the higher electrical power required by the straight grate system. The substitution of coke breeze with charcoal in the sintering process results in an increase in GER but a decrease in GWP. However, a substantial proportion of the GER is derived from renewable sources (wood), resulting in a decrease in the non-renewable components of this environmental impact. Given the source of the inventory data and the assumptions and approximations made in carrying out the LCAs, it is emphasised that the results presented in this paper should be considered as indicative rather than as definitive results for the two iron ore agglomeration processing routes considered.

Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) is obtained through calcination, hydration, and carbonation. Thus, the change in each process condition determines the particle size or morphology of PCC. To date, studies on precipitated calcium carbonate have mainly focused on process manufacturing PCC, aimed matter. Still, few studies on calcination or hydration have been conducted. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the effect of hydration condition on the synthesis characteristics of aragonite PCC. Results showed that the particle size of calcium hydroxide changed based on the variation of the initial hydration temperature. In particular, higher initial temperature resulted in the larger particle size of calcium hydroxide used in synthesis. The particle size and yield of aragonite also increased when calcium hydroxide made at high temperature was used. The water/solid ratio or total amount at the hydration time had no effect on the manufacturing process of aragonite, however.

The underground car park "Admonterhof in the historical centre of Graz is an example for the technical and economical success of a complicated structural design using a concept on the basis of the observational method. The intention to built a 20 m deep excavation beneath a protected monument was accompanied by some essential issues: the preservation of the existing state avoiding extensive displacements by means of a girder grid of reinforced concrete, its support on large bored piles and small steel-tube piles with possible active compensation of differential settlements, the excavation support in none built-up areas with secant bored piles, the underpinning of existing buildings with different structures by means of jet grouting. Furthermore the hydraulic gradient and the permeability of a rock formation in a part of the excavation had to be explored with the purpose to control the inflow of groundwater with a level difference of more than 10 m.

The lignite surface mines of Ptolemais basin operate according to special environmental terms regarding the concentrations of heavy metals and trace elements in water discharges. Based ?n the results of lab analyses and in-situ measurements conducted so far it is concluded that the concentrations of heavy - toxic metals and other trace elements are low or negligible. The deviations from the upper concentration limits specified by laws and regulations are rare and non-systematic both on their spatial or temporal distribution. The same results prove also the relation between water quality and type and nature of the sediments forming the Ptolemais basin and the carbonated and metamorphic rocks forming the surrounding mountain areas.

Silver and silver alloys tarnish readily by the formation of tarnish on the surface when exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. This tarnish is unsightly and undesirable and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Polishes are, however, not suitable for irregular and embossed surfaces such as on coins, medallions and jewellery items, because of uneven removal of the tarnish layer and excessive wear. Successful tarnish protection can be achieved by either storing the items away from the aggressive atmosphere or by coating/treating the exposed surfaces with a protective layer. Storage is feasible for collections but is not suitable for items that are handled or worn regularly, such as jewellery. A number of commercial coatings and treatments have been developed, but to date there has not been a systematic evaluation of tarnish protection. This paper details the performance of a range of generic coatings in an accelerated tarnish test. The degree of tarnish was evaluated by means of loss in reflectivity and change in colour. Four coatings/treatments improved the tarnish resistance of silver by more than tenfold. These include an organic lacquer, rhodium electroplating and an organic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) conversion coating. Research is continuing to optimise these coatings. The response of pile foundations to lateral loads is an important factor for the successful performance of several critical structures. A new numerical code for the analysis of single piles under lateral load is outlined. The code can simulate (through appropriately chosen parameter values) not only the non-linear behavior of soil, but also the inelastic structural response of the pile itself under lateral load. Emphasis is given on the calibration of model parameters and the verification of the code. For the calibration of the parameters, data is used (a) from the well documented in the literature p-y curves, and (b) from experiments conducted either in full scale or in the centrifuge. Results are compared to those of well known published codes for inelastic analysis of single piles under lateral load.

The natural resources of lead and zinc are primarily constituted by polymetallic and lead-zinc ores. Beneficiation of these types of ores to produce standard nonmetallic concentrates inevitably results in an increase in the loss of base and precious metals with tailings. An improvement in the grades of lead and zinc concentrates can be achieved by re-cleaner flotation, but it results in production of intermediate products (middlings) to which substantial amounts of lead, zinc, copper and precious metals report. Without an appropriate technology for treating such intermediate products, the recoveries of valuable constituents from lead-zinc ores would remain unsatisfactory. A process has been developed in the Gintsvetmet Institute for processing of polymetallic intermediate products produced at the ore beneficiation plants. This process is based on electrothermic smelting to produce lead bullion containing precious metals, commercial-grade copper-lead matte and high-zinc slags (up to 15-20% Zn) from which zinc can be extracted by slag-fuming or Waelz process. Tests have indicated that the recovery of lead from intermediate products into lead bullion and matte is about 83-85% and 13-14% respectively (the total recovery is 97-98%), while copper recovery into the matte and zinc recovery into the slag is 90-92% and 95-96% respectively. Precious metals (about 96-97%) report into the lead bullion.

The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO) was formed in 1994 to promote development and adoption of international standards for estimation and reporting of exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. The CRIRSCO standards have been accepted by most mining companies and professional societies worldwide. Market regulators from Australia, South Africa and Canada require that these standards be followed when releasing public information. Among these requirements is the use of specific definitions for what constitutes exploration results, mineral resources and mineral reserves. If such information is publicly disclosed in must be estimated by a Competent or Qualified Person. In the United States of America, public disclosures are regulated by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC does not recognise the CRIRSCO guidelines, and some of the SEC requirements for public release of information are materially different from those applicable in other countries. The CRIRSCO definitions and the Competent Person requirements are reviewed and compared with those of the SEC. The organisation of the SEC and its rule making process are briefly discussed. Ongoing efforts to bring the US regulatory requirements closer to those applicable in other countries are presented, as well as other activities that CRIRSCO is entertaining with the United Nations, the International Accounting Standard Board and other international organisations to reach the objective of worldwide standardisation of reporting procedures.

Selenium, which is a 6A group element of the periodic table, constitutes about 7x10-5 % of the earth?s crust. Even though selenium is a dispersed element with respect to its commercial exploitation, it is capable of forming number of minerals and nearly forty selenium minerals have been identified, out of which the copper ores are the richest sources of selenium. Electronics industries and glass industries are the major consumers of selenium, while pharma grade selenium used as micronutrient for humans and animals. Various methods have been developed to recover selenium as a by-product from copper anode slime during copper refining. Selenium being amphoteric in nature, it is soluble in both acid and alkali. While acid roast process is widely used, considerable work has been carried out in Russia for recovering selenium through alkali route. This paper enlightens the process developed at Central Research and Development Laboratory, for recovering selenium from decopperised slime through alkali pressure leaching. The decopperised slime is pressure leached with alkali under oxidizing conditions by which almost all the selenium present is converted to alkali selenate, which is easily separable from the rest of the decopperised slime. The solution so obtained is neutralized, during which, most of the impurities are precipitated out. Then selenium is precipitated in its elemental form upon purging sulphur-di-oxide under warm acidic medium. The purity of the selenium obtained by this process is higher than that of the selenium from acid roast process. Moreover selenium can be crystallized as sodium selenate and it can be marketed. The acidic content of the effluent is recovered and it is recycled back to the process. The sodium content of the effluent is converted into high purity sodium sulphate, which is marketable. The hazardous waste containing arsenic is precipitated as its sulphide and can be disposed off as landfill.

Thus far environmental groups remain unconvinced, and the public is still largely uninformed. In the authors’ opinion, a number of recent events and experiences have converged to help shape a more effective public communication on mining’s important role. This paper presents a fresh and cogent perspective on coal’s role in sustaining society by anchoring the message in a transparent material flow analysis that links coal’s impacts across a broad range of social and environmental aspects.

Wet concentrate is received from various concentrators along the Eastern Bushveld Complex, with 60% of the total concentrate received being from UG2 reef and 40% from Merensky reef. The concentrate grade differs from 35 g/t to 110 g/t, and from this a PGM-rich nickel-copper matte is produced. The furnace matte produced is sent to the ACP converter in Rustenburg. The Anglo Platinum concentrators, from which concentrate is received, are Lebowa, Potgietersrus, Amandelbult, and Union, as well as the joint venture Modikwa. The concentrate is fed to two flash dryers that utilise coal-fired, fluidized-bed hot-gas generators to produce the hot gas that will drive off the moisture, leaving a fine bone-dry concentrate to feed to the furnace. The dry concentrate is pneumatically transferred to a storage silo before being transferred to the feed bins situated above the furnace. Lime, if required as a flux, may be transferred separately to the furnace feed bin by a pneumatic system. The concentrate and lime is fed from the feed bins onto airslides and into the furnace. The feed rate is automatically controlled, and the system is set up to optimize the power to feed ratio. The electric furnace is nominally rated at 68 MW and the power is transferred into the furnace using six 1.6 m diameter Söderberg electrodes. Concentrate is melted by energy generated when electric current passes through the electrodes and resistive slag layer. On melting, two immiscible phases form: slag and matte. Furnace matte, containing the bulk of the base metal sulphides and PGMs, is denser than slag and collects naturally at the bottom of the furnace. The furnace is constructed of a combination of refractory brick and water-cooled copper coolers. The furnace sidewalls and hearth are cooled by air drawn through the area by cooling fans. The hearth and matte zone are constructed from refractory bricks. The copper coolers reside only in the slag zone of the furnace along the entire perimeter of the furnace. One staggered row of plate coolers is installed above the waffle coolers along the perimeter of the furnace. Matte is tapped periodically through one of the two matte tapholes into 35-ton refractory-lined ladles, and cast into matte ingots on a casting machine. The cooled matte is discharged onto a concrete slab for cooling and then transferred by front-end loaders to the crushing plant. The matte is first crushed in a jaw crusher and then a Rhodax cone crusher to a size of 2 mm before it is loaded into tankers and sent to the ACP. The low-grade slag is tapped from the furnace through a water-cooled copper insert into a short water-cooled copper ?hot launder? which discharges into a granulation cold launder. The granulated slag slurry flows to three rake classifiers, from which the coarse slag is discharged onto a conveyor to dewatering silos. The dewatered slag from the silos is dumped. The water overflow from the classifiers reports to two thickeners where the water is clarified, and the thickener underflow is returned to the rake classifiers. The smelter is a zero-effluent plant and all the water from the slag silos where the slag is dewatered, as well as the storm water, is pumped to the process water dam from where it is pumped back into the plant for process water use. The off-gas from the furnace is drawn through a forced draught cooler and into a high temperature baghouse. The dust collected in the baghouse is pneumatically transferred into bins above the furnace and is fed via the concentrate airslides. The cleaned off-gas is then vented through the main stack.

How much trouble can narrow vertical fissures in bedrock cause on a shallow bedrock site? Enough trouble so end-bearing H-piles range between 8 and 100 feet long in a single pile cap and tiebacks range from 40 to over 100 feet long within a 10 foot wall span. Sloped bedrock surfaces also complicated the tieback installation as the drill casing followed the sloped rock surface while drilling and caused unanticipated bending (and sometimes breaking) of the drill string. Warned via pre-construction rock probes and cores reaching over 80 feet deep at the Winooski, Vermont project site, the design and construction team expected anomalies in pile driving and tieback drilling due to fissures in the bedrock filled with soil and weathered-rock. The degree of abruptness in the variability in the rock surface, and its impact on pile driving and tieback drilling were less predictable. Close monitoring of pile and tieback installation, redesign of pile caps, and lengthened tiebacks overcame these anomalous fissures. This paper shares the lessons learned for overcoming these geologic challenges to benefit designers, contractors bidding the work, and ultimately, the owner, with lower contingencies.

The gold catalyst supported on iron oxide was prepared from gold dissolved in aqua regia by a deposition-precipitation method and applied to CO oxidation in the absence and presence of hydrogen. Some characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), temperature programmed reduction (TPR), temperature programmed oxidation (TPO), and the pulsed CO chemisorption with temperature programmed desorption (TPD) were conducted to explain different catalytic activities of Au/Fe2O3 catalyst pretreated at different conditions. The particle size of gold was about 10 nm for Au/Fe2O3 calcined in air at 373 and 573 K. For complete CO oxidation, the decreasing CO conversion with a reaction time was observed at low temperatures but its initial catalytic activity can be restored by a heat treatment at high temperatures. This catalyst was quite active for the selective CO oxidation in the presence of hydrogen especially at low temperatures. In the presence of hydrogen, the deactivation was significantly diminished.

New method for processing of copper and nickel production feed has been developed and tested at pilot unit having 10 t/hr capacity. The process allows single-stage treatment of ore feed including that with high magnesium oxide content and resulting in the production of rich matte, high-grade matte, or moralised alloy for further leaching, as well as dump slag and off-gasses suitable for production of elemental sulphur, liquid sulphur dioxide, or sulphuric acid. Tests results and principal technical and economical parameters are presented.
