Increasingly, mineral operations need to manage water as a key business asset. Managing water solely as an environmental issue leaves a business exposed to social, cultural and economic risks associated with water. Adopting a company-wide strategic approach, which takes account of the true value of water will provide businesses with opportunities and risk protection. Rio Tinto has recognised the business imperative for water stewardship and has responded by producing the Rio Tinto Water Strategy. This strategy commits the company to managing water assets in a responsible manner, taking account of environmental, social and economic values. To incorporate the true value of water in site decision making, a new set of tools is required at the operational level. A key part of the strategy focuses on developing a framework to value water based on case study examples from around the Group. This paper presents progress on the companyÆs experiences in developing and implementing the water strategy.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng) (Chemical) degree This paper details the formulation of a mathematical model for the simulation of a primary bioleach reactor, with specific reference to the leaching of pyrite. The model is based on the direct reaction mechanism, where the leaching of pyrite is said to occur via a two-step process. The process involves the formation of ferrous?iron through the chemical leaching of pyrite and subsequent bacterial oxidation of ferrous-iron back into ferric-iron. At steady state the rate of chemical leaching and bacterial oxidation are linked by the ratio of ferrous-iron to ferric-iron in solution. The extent of conversion of pyrite in the reactor system is described using the segregated flow model, with the exit age distribution of the solid phase being described by the Tanks-in-Series model. The final phase in model formulation involves the inclusion of steady state material balances on the bacteria and fluid phase components. The model is compared to pilot plant data and laboratory data for two different types of pyrite concentrates, with simulation results showing that the model is in good agreement with the data. This paper presents an application of 3-D plots and non-linear regressions to define a sitespecific form of the charge weight scaled distance. The PPV (PPA) of single hole blasts is normally considered as a function of two independent variables - the charge weight and the distance. It is of great importance to obtain the relationship of the function accurately for a concerned site in terms of blast vibration analysis and modeling. However, in pre-computer time it was difficult to plot 3-D graphs. Consequently, a charge weight scaled distance was used to plot the PPV (or PPA) against the scaled distance as 2-D graphs. Blast vibration investigators use several forms of the charge weight scaled distances to plot data. We can exemplify them with the cube root of charge weight scaled distance, the square root of charge weight scaled distance, and other forms (Hossaini and Sen, 2004). Each of these scaled distances assumes relative contributions of the charge weight and the distance to the vibration attenuation. For example, the charge weight is assumed to have a less contribution to vibration in the cube root scaled distance than it is assumed in the square-root scaled distance. In reality, for different sites the relative contribution of the charge weight and the distance may be different and site-specific. This may explain that in some cases, the blast vibration data plots using these charge weight scaled distances are scattered. This could be largely due to the fact that the definition of the form of the charge weight scaled distance is not adequate for the particular site condition.

In order to improve the efficiency of hydrometallurgical processing of pyrrhotite concentrates, an integrated set of research has been carried out to investigate the use of sulfur dioxide in individual unit operations and as a leaching agent in the autoclave process as a substitute for oxygen. Treating iron-containing raw materials for production of nonferrous metals are based on the selective reaction of SO2 with iron sulfides and oxides. Iron is dissolved as sulfate, which can be treated in a separate circuit to produce iron-containing pigments or it can be disposed of after neutralization. Nonferrous and precious metals contained in pyrrhotite concentrate do not react with sulfur dioxide and remain virtually completely in the solid phase, i.e. high-grade sulfide concentrate to be treated by hydro- or pyrometallurgical methods. Elemental sulfur formed in the process of leaching is separated from the pulp in granulated form as a result of the use of special surfactants. The process of sulfide concentrate leaching with the use of sulfur dioxide is conducted at temperatures above the sulfur melting point (119°C) with distributed feeding of surfactant and under a partial pressure of sulfur dioxide of up to 0.3 to 0.5 MPa.

Acid mine drainage waters generated in the uranium deposit Curilo, Bulgaria, were treated by means of a pilot-scale passive system consisting of an alkalizing limestone drain, a permeable multibarrier for microbial dissimilatory sulphate reduction, biosorption and chemical neutralization, and a natural wetland, connected in a series. The waters had pH in the range of about 2.5 ? 4.1 and contained radionuclides (uranium, radium), heavy metals (copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, nickel, cobalt, iron, manganese), arsenic and sulphates in concentrations usually much higher than the relevant permissible levels for waters intended for use in the agriculture and/or industry. The water flow rate through the passive system varied in the range of about 5 ? 15 m3/24 h, reflecting water residence times of about 60 to 20 hours. An efficient removal of pollutants was achieved by this system during the different climatic seasons, even during the cold winter days at external air and water temperatures close to 0°C. The removal was connected with different mechanisms but the microbial sulphate reduction played the main role during the warmer months of the year. However, during the cold winter days the removal of pollutants was due mainly to their sorption by the solid dead plant biomass (cow manure, plant compost, straw) present in the multibarrier as well as to their precipitation as a result of chemical neutralization caused by crushed limestone.

Plastics recycling has become an established national industry in Korea. However, it is still in its infant stage and experiences growing pains. In Korea, mixed plastic wastes generated from households after hand picking and/or mechanical sorting processes amount to 1,700,000 ton per year in 2005, and most of these waste are finally end up with landfill and/or incineration due to lacks of separation technologies and economical reasons. These plastic wastes can not be used as raw materials for chemical and/or thermal recycling because of their high content of PVC (upto 4.0 wt.%). In the present work, gravity separation system has been developed to remove PVC from the mixed plastic waste and recover the individual plastics. The separation system mainly consists of air classification, crushing, feeding system at fixed rate and wet-type gravity separation system. The gravity system based on centrifugal separation also consists of mixing, precleaning, separation, dewatering, recovery system, wastewater treatment system, etc. The main objective of this process to be developed is to achieve high separation efficiency of polyolefins (PE, PP, PS) with less than 0.3 wt.% PVC content and less than 10% moisture content in the final products. The system with a capacity of 0.5 ton per hour is developed and operational results are presented.

Four companies mined ball clay in four states during 2005. They included H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Franklin Minerals), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys), Old Hickory Clay and Unimin. Production was estimated to be 1.32 Mt (1.45 million st) valued at $53.3 million, based on the results of a preliminary survey of the ball clay industry. Production in 2004 was 1.22 Mt (1.34 million st) valued at $54.1 million. Tennessee was the leading ball clay producer state with 61 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky.

The Li-N-H system composed of LiH and LiNH2 catalyzed by titanium compound desorbs ~6 mass% hydrogen and a quite small amount of ammonia in temperature range from 150 to 250 °C under He flow atmosphere. In this work, hydrogen desorption (H-desorption) mechanism in the reaction from LiH+LiNH2 to Li2NH+H2 in a non-equilibrium condition was clarified by TDMS, TG and FT-IR analyses for the products replaced by LiD or LiND2 for LiH or LiNH2,respectively. The results suggested that H-desorption reaction progresses through two-step elementary reactions mediated by ammonia. As a next step, we carefully determined the amount of the ammonia containing in desorbed hydrogen for the Li-N-H system in a closed system from the practical point of view. The results indicated that a quite small of ammonia thermodynamically coexisted in the desorbed hydrogen in closed system, although ammonia could not be almost detected in emitted hydrogen gas by TDMS under some non-equilibrium conditions. Moreover, for understanding the role of titanium, the chemical bonding state of the titanium compounds doped as catalyst in the mixture was examined by XAFS measurement. The results indicate that the Ti atoms, which can induce catalytic effect, are in a particular chemical bonding state.

The velocity solid charge attains when dropping down concentrate chutes is an important boundary condition when developing mathematical models of flash furnace burners and reaction shafts. In this work an experimental rig was developed to measure the velocity attained when nickel concentrate and sand were dropped down a vertical pipe 3m long. The velocity measurements showed that the nickel concentrate did not fall as individual particles. The measured values of the velocity approached, but did not attain, those calculated for solid bodies, the disparity being attributed to friction at the pipe wall and fluid drag losses. After falling 2 m velocities between 5-6 m/s were attained. The analysis was extended and applied to understanding the intermittent problem of puffing which sometimes occurs from the top of the concentrate chute. The pressure at the bottom of the chute is the net result of two opposing pressures, namely that developed by (a)the process air entering through the velocity control device, and (b) the solids falling down the concentrate chute. Flow back up the chute occurs when the former exceeds the latter. The process air pressures in the burner were obtained from CFD simulations of a full burner. Variables considered included air speed through the velocity control device, drop height and furnace draft. The analysis was useful in highlighting the operating conditions which were conducive to puffing and in establishing procedures to minimise its occurrence.

As one of the effective usages of various wastes discharged in non-ferrous metal industry, the synthesis of hydrotalcite was carried out using aluminum dross as a raw material. Hydrotalcite is one of the inorganic anion exchangers and has layered structure of complex hydroxide. The removal of toxic metal ions such as As(III), As(V), Cr(VI) and Se(IV) with the hydrotalcite was investigated, and the removal properties were compared from the viewpoint of the anion exchange amount and exchange rate. Hydrotalcite can be obtained by a co-precipitation method from the aluminum dross and the waste MgCl2 solution discharged in an aluminum regeneration process. Slight amounts of SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and so on remain in the reaction product as an impurity component. Interlayer distance of the obtained hydrotalcite is about 0.3nm. Hydrotalcite changes to Mg-Al oxide by the calcination at 773K for 3h, and then hydrotalcite is formed again by a rehydration operation after calcination. The toxic metal ions are removed from aqueous solution by the anion exchange reaction in the pH region where toxic metal ions exist as the anionic species like AsO2-, HAsO42-,CrO42-, and SeO32-. The exchange amount is considerably concerned with the valence of anionic species and the size of anionic species. The removal of toxic metal ions were investigated from the engineering aspects such as the low concentration limit to be removed, the amount of hydrotalcite to be used for the perfect removal of toxic metal ions and so on.

Syntheses of Al-TiC-Al2O3 and Al-SiC-Al2O3 composites were obtained in situ by carbothermal reduction of mixtures of Al powder, TiO2 powder and activated carbon powders and Al powder, SiO2 powder and activated carbon powders. The reductions were carried out in a horizontal tube furnace under flow of inert gas. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The synthesized products were mixtures of aluminum reinforce with titanium carbide and alumina and aluminum reinforce with silicon carbide and alumina. The effect of the reaction temperature (1000 o C ? 1200 o C) and condition of precursors on the Al powder, TiO2 powder and activated carbon powders and Al powder, SiO2 powder and activated carbon powders were investigated using XRD and SEM method. The synthesized products showed those composites with aluminum matrix and titanium carbide and alumina as reinforced phases and aluminum matrix and silicon carbide and alumina as a reinforced phase was formed.

San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) operates an underground coal mine near Farmington, New Mexico. Continuous miners and a longwall produce 7-8 million tons per year. The coal seam at SJCC has tested to have a propensity for spontaneous combustion. As such, during feasibility for this project, it was elected to utilize a bleederless ventilation system on the longwall. Three-entry gateroads are developed, and the longwall gob is sealed as mining progresses. SJCC utilizes a nitrogen injection system to continuously inertize the gob. In 2004, the mine was nearing completion of its first longwall district. The next district would contain longer panels (up to 12,500 feet). Due to the liberation of methane, and to a lesser extent hydrogen sulfide, a typical wrap-around ventilation system would not be appropriate. Not only would gas concentrations likely be challenging, but the overall ventilating pressure in the mine would have to be increased beyond limits established to mitigate the potential for spontaneous combustion. Given the above-described operating constraints, SJCC determined a need for a small ventilation shaft in the back (longwall setup area) of the next district that would draw adequate air past the longwall seals to maintain low gas levels and permit the required regulatory inspections to occur. Extensive ventilation modeling and gas desorption testing indicated that the shaft would be required to handle a volume of air ranging from 40,000 cfm to as high as 185,000 cfm. This large range is driven by the position of the longwall face with respect to the shaft and the effectiveness of the SJCC degasification program (SJCC uses vertical gob vent boreholes and horizontal in-seam methods). Ventilation simulations determined an appropriate diameter for the 350-ft-deep shaft to be 5 feet. Having determined shaft size, the next decision related to the method of shaft construction. Conventional shaft sinking was ruled out, due to the small diameter. Raise boring was an attractive option but had two drawbacks: (1) development crews would reach the bottom of the shaft just a few weeks before longwall startup, leaving a compressed timeframe to install the shaft, and (2) raiseboring requires additional underground entries to be developed to stow the project’s cuttings. While raiseboring remained a viable option, the problems associated with it led SJCC to also investigate blind drilling.

In considering the cost of rock excavation, but little attention has been given to the economical handling and breaking up of boulders. Very few records seem to have been kept as to the cost of such work, and although it is difficult for this reason, to set a fair price for breaking up and handling boulders of various sizes, yet the cost of this detail work enters very materially into the cost of solid rock excavation. The subject is worthy of close and prolonged study.

The usefulness of the water-cooled probe technique to experimentally study slag solidification and freeze lining formation in pyrometallurgical reactors is evaluated. With this technique a layer of solidified slag is formed on a water-cooled probe that is submerged into a liquid slag bath. The influence of the submergence time and the heat input is examined. The solidified layers are analyzed with light microscopy, electron microscopy, electron probe micro-analysis and X-ray diffraction. Thermodynamic software is used to interpret the solidification microstructure. The results demonstrate that the technique is useful to understand freeze lining formation.

A numerical model has been developed to simulate the effectiveness and costs of a number of conceptual remedial measures aimed at reducing acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and its tributaries near the Stockton Coal Mine, situated on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Stockton Coal Mine has been in operation over the past 100 years. During that time, seepage from waste rock dumps has contributed to elevated acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. The yearly mean rainfall at the mine site is 6000 mm. The model, developed using GoldSim software, simulates rainfall, run-off and stream discharge for 26 tributaries. It then calculates acidity and metal concentrations in the mine impacted tributaries and the dilution downstream from the mine. The model has been calibrated to measured flow and acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. Acidity and metal loads are removed from the system in accordance with specified efficiencies and capacities of the respective conceptual remedial measures. The user can compare specific remedial measures, or a combination of conceptual remedial measures. The model predicts the acidity and metal concentrations at a number of monitoring stations for any remedial strategy selected by the user. It also calculates the capital and operational costs for that particular remedial strategy. This paper presents the development of the numerical model and describes how the end-user can use it to compare the efficiency and costs of various remedial strategies by running different æwhat ifÆ scenarios.

This paper presents the results of a comprehensive pre-production pile testing programme for the US$ 800 million 1400MW Coal-Fired Jimah Power Plant Project in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. The testing programme included high-strain dynamic testing and fully instrumented static axial and lateral load testing of driven prestressed concrete piles and bored cast-in-place piles. A highlight of the testing programme was the pioneering use of the Global Strain Extensometer (GloStrExt) Method, a deformation monitoring system that uses advanced pneumatically- or hydraulically-anchored extensometers and a novel analytical technique to monitor loads and displacements down the shaft and at the toe of driven prestressed concrete piles. The experience with the testing programme for the Jimah Project also demonstrates the possibility of achieving notable breakthroughs, not only in the monitoring, evaluation and reporting of pile foundation behaviour dynamics but also in our understanding of the mechanisms that underpin such behaviour. These significant gains are undeniably a direct result of the committed and co-operative relationship among the project owner, design/builder, specialist piling subcontractors, pile suppliers and pile instrumentation and testing specialists.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, Bindura, nickel The smelter at Bindura Nickel Corporation processes concentrates from its own mines and other external sources. Concentrates are dried, smelted, and converted to a desulphurised matte (leach alloy) for further processing at the refinery. The smelter comprises a drying plant, submerged arc electric furnace, electrostatic precipitator, and three Peirce-Smith type converters capable of treating 150 000 tonnes of concentrates per year. Concentrates are dried in a rotary coal-fired kiln, blended with fluxes, and smelted in a six-in-line submerged-arc 15MW electric furnace. Slag is tapped and granulated for disposal, and matte is tapped at regular intervals for blowing in Peirce-Smith converters. The paper details the 37-year history of the smelter, including furnace rebuilds and operating parameters as they have evolved in response to changing feed compositions. Special challenges, particularly relating to the treatment of high talc concentrates, are also described.

Land rehabilitation at Golden Cross is reviewed, 8 years after mine closure in 1997/98, from the perspectives of a Peer Reviewer (land rehabilitation) and a Regional Council Officer (Resource Consents compliance). Land rehabilitation items we discuss include: management of restored pastures, native plantings (on-site riparian and block plantings and off-site environmental riparian enhancement plantings), wetlands (on-site tailings lake and sediment ponds littoral zone plantings, and basement of the open pit; and off-site wetlands enhancement plantings), pine plantations on-site and on surrounding land, stabilization of the Tailings Lake Embankment (landslide) and Open Pit capping, capping of acid-mine-rock, stability of discharge channels, buildings and amenities, public access for recreation, educational uses, and future management of the site. Pest control has helped to conserve the rare and endangered HochstetterÆs (Leiopelma hochstetteri) and ArcheyÆs (L. archeyi) frogs, and a regionally significant stand of rare swamp maire (Syzygium maire) has been conserved and fenced.
