The use of augercast piles has been limited by the engineer's concern for the structural quality of the installed pile. The nature of the pile is such that its final structural continuity is very dependent on the skill of the personnel that do the installation. Thus, NDT methods have been used to verify integrity and when problems are indicated the available solutions are usually quite costly. If information were available during the pile installation so that immediate steps could be taken to correct perceived problems, the concerns of the engineer could be addressed and the system would gain increased reliability. Pile Dynamics, Inc. has developed a quality control system, the Pile Installation Recorder for Augered Cast-in-Place piles (PIR CFA). This system consists of the following devices as shown in Figure 1. 1) The Control Unit powers the sensors, conditions the signals from the sensors, records all measurements, takes input information from the operator, displays the results, and stores the recorded data on a flash card for later permanent storage and processing. During the use of the system all of the results obtained during a test are seen during recording and can be reviewed on the screen again after completion of the installation. The ability to review the measured information makes it unnecessary to print a copy in the field. Since printers often give difficulty in the construction site environment the ability to review the results quickly after completion of the installation is an important capability.

The world's reserve base is adequate for at least 100 years at the current consumption rate. China, India, and the U.S. are expected to remain the leading producing countries. The U.S. will continue to be the largest consumer of the production. None of the known substitutes for barium sulfate are expected to impact existing applications. World production in 1995 was 4,410Mt. This is about 50% of the projected capacity. Consumption is directly proportional to hydro-carbon well installation activity. Imports are expected to continue to supply more than half of the U.S. requirements.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest will hold its 15th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards banquet on Saturday, Dec. 6,1997 in Tucson, AZ, preceeding the Arizona Conference of SME. The Mining Foundation's Hall of Fame, located in Tucson, recognizes outstanding contributions to the mining industry by individuals and industry partners. A permanent display of honoree vitae is located at the Arizona Historical Society at 949 E. Second St. in Tucson. Each year, one living award recipient and up to two honorees from mining history are chosen by the Hall of Fame committee and the board of governors of the Mining Foundation. In 1989, the Mining Foundation also initiated a Medal of Merit to recognize outstanding individual technical and professional contributions to the mineral industry. And in 1995, an award was instituted to recognize contributions made by companies and organizations in partnership with the mining industry. This year's inductee is James R. Moffett, chairman and chief executive officer of Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc. He will be present as guest of honor and featured speaker. The Hall of Fame will induct John V. Dorr, metallurgist and chemical engineer. Also inducted will be Frederick L. Ransome, a geologist. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Hugo T. Dummett, senior vice president, Exploration BHP Minerals, and Spencer R. Titley, professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Arizona. An Industry Partnership Award will be presented to the Colorado School of Mines for its continued support to the mining industry through education and research. Problems with the cyanidation of copper-gold ores Copper-rich gold ores are becoming increasingly important both within Australia and overseas (Dayton, 1982; Deng and Muir, 1994; Muir et al, 1993; Sceresini and Staunton, 1991; Solis, Hefter and May, 1995; Wall, Hornby and Sethi, 1987). In Australasia alone over 30 copper-gold deposits have been reported (Muir et al, 1993). Table 1 lists several of the deposits that have been processed. Case Study: Dragline Swing to Dump Automation By Peter Corke, CSIRO Manufacturing Technology/CRC for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) Peter Corke presented a case study of a project to automate the dragline swing to dump operation. The project is funded by ACARP, BHP Coal, Pacific Coal and the CMTE and is being carried out on a dragline at Pacific Coal's Meandu mine near Brisbane. Corke began by highlighting that the minerals industry makes extensive use of large, mechanised machines. However, unlike other industries, mining has not adopted automation and most machines are controlled by human operators on board the machine itself. Choosing an automation target The dragline automation was chosen because: ò draglines are one of the biggest capital assets in a mine; ò performance between operators vary significantly, so improved capital utilisation is possible; ò the dragline is often the bottleneck in production; ò a large part of the operation cycle is spent swinging from dig to dump; and ò it is technically feasible. There has been a history of drag line automation projects, none with great success.

"Universal Dynamics Ltd. of Vancouver, Canada has developed, patented and commercialized the ""REMERC"" process for the treatment of mercury contaminated sludges and soils. Mercury is extracted into an acidified and oxidizing, sodium chloride brine solution. REMERC was initially developed to treat mercury contaminated EPA listed wastes (K106) generated by the chlor-alkali industry. More recent work has expanded the capability;' of REMERC to include remediation of mercury contaminated sites, equipment and building materials.In the process mercury is currently recovered from solution by cementation on iron powder in an agitated reactor. The process recovers high purity elemental mercury (99.9% purity). Cementation typically recovers about 90-95% of the mercury in 30 minutes. Higher recovery is not necessary because of the recirculation of the leach solution. When treating highly contaminated chloralkali wastes (5-13% mercury content), REMERC will reduce the mercury laden solutions from 400-1,000 mg/L mercury to 50-100 mg/L. In the treatment of less concentrated wastes «1,000 mg/kg mercury) such as those encountered in site remediation, the treated solutions will generally contain 10-20 mg/L mercury. Cementation while being simple and able to achieve the required recovery has the. undesirable properties of; requiring a solid-liquid separation and adding iron to solution which must be precipitated, ultimately increasing the weight of residue to landfill. .The potential advantages of electrolysis were recognized early in the development of REMERC. Mercury electrolysis is well known in gold and chloralkali processing. Initial testwork utilized a liquid mercury cathode and a coated titanium anode both common to chloralkali producers. The mercury cathode appeared susceptible to polarization and solution impurities significantly affected performance. Agitation of the mercury pool improved performance but it was still not possible to achieve the reduction objectives. Current efficiencies were low, near 10%, and it was apparent that a relatively large cathode pool would be required to limit the current density. A number of electrode combinations with and without a membrane were then tested in a vertical electrode' configuration but the desired performance was not obtained."

"The results being presented in this paper are those obtained during 1996 on a drilling automation project at Stobie mine. This project has successfully demonstrated that the remote operation of multiple drills (by a single driller) from surface using Tamrock Data Solo 1000 Sixty drillrigs is technically feasible and can potentially bring significant rewards in terms of productivity and work environment improvements, as well as labour and maintenance savings. BackgroundThe ObjectiveThis paper is an update of a previous report on remote drilling research at Stobie mine. Enabled by the communications system installed at the mine, the ability to remotely control underground equipment from surface has been demonstrated (Poole et al., 1996). This paper discusses the needs and process required to carry this concept to consolidate the operation of multiple machines under a single operator.The TeamThe team assembled to develop and implement the automation and the communi-cations extensions needed to allow the multiple machines’ operation from the surface by one operator included the following:INCO Mines Research supplied the project management and original project initiative. The primary purpose was to prove the advantages of savings associated with the driller not being required to travel to the underground drill location coupled with the savings associated with one-man, multiple-machine techniques.Tamrock EJC supplied the Data Solo 1000 Sixty drills and the Tamrock specific machine-based custom software. The drills were produced in Finland with no provision for remote operation of the drill from other than the umbilical attached local console.Automated Mining Systems supplied the modifications to the drill communications equipment to allow the machine communications to become broadband compatible. As well, Automated Mining Systems also supplied the hardware necessary to be able to remotely control the portable video camera, as well as the data logging equipment.Stobie Mine personnel were made available to test the function and then integrate the concept of remote control drilling into the Stobie operations."

The debate on the mechanism of adsorption of gold and silver di-cyanide onto activated carbon could be divided into two schools of thought. On the one hand, it has been proposed that the combined effects of electrostatic and chemical interaction between the activated carbon surface and adsorbing gold di-cyanide anion results in the adsorption of the latter. On the other hand the `ion-pair' adsorption reaction mechanism has been vigorously advocated as the dominant mechanism responsible for the adsorption of gold di-cyanide onto activated carbon. It is maintained that gold is adsorbed onto the carbon surface as the neutral ion-pair [M"+][Au(CN)z ]". Adsorption is viewed as the result of mainly the chemical interaction while electrostatic interactions are neglected. The validity of the `ion-pair' adsorption mechanism may be challenged on a number of counts. However, the alternative mechanism (based on aqueous surface chemistry principles) has not gained general acceptance yet, because it has not been applied widely enough to explain the different adsorption phenomena associated with gold di-cyanide on activated carbon. In the present study the case in favour of an adsorption mechanism based on general aqueous surface chemistry principles is presented. A model framework is developed for the adsorption reaction mechanism of gold di-cyanide onto activated carbon which incorporates the effects of chemical and electrostatic interactions between the dissolved species, the aqueous solution and the carbon surface. This model is then employed to explain a wide variety of reported adsorption phenomena for gold di-cyanide on activated carbon, such as the effects of pH, the adsorption of different metal cyano complexes, ionic strength, and type and concentration of cations in solution. In addition the effects of cyanide and dissolved oxygen concentration were investigated. No ready explanation, in terms of aqueous surface chemistry principles, is yet available for the switch in adsorption behaviour that agrees with ion exchange to ion-pair adsorption with increasing ionic strength.

The Esperanza deposit is located 120 kin N of Mount Isa, Queensland at approximately lat 19¦20'S, long 139¦22'E on the Camooweal (SE 54-13) 1:250 000 scale map sheet. It is one of several structurally controlled copper ¦ cobalt deposits developed along the Mount Gordon Fault zone and related faults, within the Western Fold Belt of the Mount Isa Inlier (Figure 1). Together with the nearby Mammoth orebodies it forms the basis of the Gunpowder operation of Aberfoyle Limited. Until recently ore was mined from the Mammoth orebodies by open stoping with decline haulage to surface leach pads. Leaching of in situ broken ore (in place) and surface heaps, followed by solvent extraction and electro-winning (SX-EW), produced copper metal on-site. In March 1997, mining was suspended at Mammoth and the focus of the Gunpowder operation switched to development of the Esperanza orebody, which is expected to begin open cut production in mid 1998. SX-EW methods will produce 44 000 tpa of copper from an expanded plant. The pre-mining mineral resource at Esperanza (measured, indicated and inferred) is estimated at 4.6 Mt averaging 7.7 per cent copper.

The integration of environmental and permitting strategies into development has become a routine part of doing business for the international minerals industry. Paralleling the development schedule with the environmental and permitting schedule is critical to ensuring that design recognises environmental constraints and that the environmental and permitting program has the right focus and achieves the objective of obtaining workable permits that reflect the project design. Regulatory issues including the law of and controls established by the country the project is situated in, the requirements of international financing institutions, international politics and the role of environmental groups and the particular precedents and processes established are all important issues that must be recognised and incorporated into the permitting program by the developer. Technical issues including collecting early environmental data during exploration, establishing hydro-meteorology equipment, baseline data gathering, and getting good environmental engineering information as a part of feasibility and design are also critical issues to the success of a project which are under the direct control of the developer. Finally tying all of these issues into a single integrated strategy under the direction and control of a nominated team is necessary to maintain focus and achieve results.

Full-face shield leg pressures in a longwall panel for a three-month period were collected and analyzed. The pressure data were presented in the following forms: full- panel full-face shield pressure, individual shield pressure, full-face shield pressure, full-panel time-weighted-average pressure, and relationships among setting pressure, final pressure and pressure increment. Although shield pressure varies from shield to shield and from cycle to cycle, the setting pressure and face advance rate do control the 6nal pressure and time-weighted average pressure.

INTRODUCTION It was not very many years ago that tunneling machine manufacturers spent considerable time trying to convince contractors and mine operators of the advantages of mechanical tunnel boring over conventional drill and blast methods. Today there are few doubters left. There is universal agreement that, not only are tunneling machines here to stay, but the ratio of bored rock tunnels to blasted rock tunnels is increasing at an accelerated pace, and within the next twenty years I predict almost all tunnels will be bored by machine. I believe we are today at a very important mile-post in the development of tunnel boring systems. Felix Gaye stated in his recent article (1) "It is important to disseminate between the efficiency of cutting tools and the overall efficiency of the boring operation". Mechanized tunnel boring in the past placed almost total emphasis on the rock cutting and boring ability of the tunneling machine. With advancements in technology and better solutions to the problems of rock fracture, steering control, and structural design, the emphasis today can be placed on the total-system concept. Tunneling machine design, as one of the key elements in the overall system, presents many problems that are not totally solved today. These design problems are, in the most part, not related with rock fracture, but rather with criteria associated with the over-all operation.

For some electronic applications where a dispersed electrically-conductive particulate-phase is employed, the conductivity of the surface (or near-surface region) of the particles provides for the primary mechanism which determines its electrical conductivity. Particles of a less expensive material, which may have desirable thermal-expansion properties, when coated with silver offer a means of also obtaining desirable electrical properties and at low cost. The research conducted was focused primarily on the development of silver-coated tungsten particles for thick-film polymeric conductors. The ammoniacal electrolyte was formulated from silver-nitrate, glycine inhibitor and formaldehyde reductant. The reduction, and subsequent deposition, of silver occurred selectively on the surface of the tungsten particles. Coated particles were assessed by SEM imaging. The thickness of the silver coating was estimated to be approximately 100nm on the basis of a mass account and the coating being uniform. The electrical conductivity of a silver-coated tungsten-powder pellet was found to be similar to that of a silver-powder pellet, of identical geometry.

"Automatic driving at high speed of an underground truck was tested at Brunswick mine in September 1995. Modifications to the truck included: a remote interface to control actuators, front and back video cameras to follow a roof mounted optical guide and proportional hydraulic controls on the steering.The mathematical model of the hydraulic system was adjusted using least square regression. The steering data, used in calculating the regression parameters, were acquired from the moving truck. The automatic steering control used three measured variables: lateral deviation, angular deviation and steering angle. Lateral deviations are obtained using the cameras, which are in continuous view of the guide, while steering angles are acquired from an extensiometer placed at the articulation point of the vehicle. Gain scheduling was used to compensate for vehicle speed and available hydraulic flow. Non-linear characteristics of the modeled hydraulic system were offset using open loop compensation.Speeds up to 23 km/h in forward direction and 13 km/h in reverse were achieved deviaduring continuous testing along one of the mine’s production drifts. Proportional steering was essential in achieving high speeds, as it enabled more precise positioning of the vehicle’s steering direction while reducing the abuses on cylinder and cylinder pins via diminished oscillations about the optical guide at high speeds."

In June 1996, Nord Resources Pacific (Nord) decided to work towards obtaining all necessary approvals from the government of PNG for a mine on Simberi Island in the Tabar Island Group, New Ireland Province. On the 9th of September 1996, Nord submitted a Proposal for Development and an application for a Mining Lease to mine the oxide gold deposits on Simberi Island. The Mining Lease was granted on the 3rd of December 1996 in a signing ceremony on Simberi Island. This was achieved in the extremely short time frame of less than 3 months and this paper attempts to explain the processes which made it possible.

All engineering designs are based on assumptions regarding the behavior of the structure or facility being designed. These assumptions may be based more or less heavily on theory, but are credible only if verified by observations of field performance. Dr. Peck's "State-of-the-Art" paper has described the semi -empirical process of soft ground tunnel design, emphasizing the importance of records of field performance of actual projects constructed under a variety of conditions. This paper will present the principal results obtained from measurements made during construction of the soft ground tunnels for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit System. SCOPE The BART System comprises 75 route miles, including 14 miles of soft ground tunnelled subways in San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley. All tunnels are single-track sections, approximately 18 feet in diameter. Usually there are two parallel tunnels at the same level, but under Market Street in San Francisco there are four tunnels (two over two), and there is also a three-track section (two over one) in Broadway, Oakland.

INTRODUCTION Under certain geological and mining conditions mining near the surface results in an intensive destruction of the overlying rock strata. If the system of mine openings remains filled with air after having completed all mining activities because the flooding of the mines depending on the morphology of the mining area does not exceed a certain level, this circumstance might result in dangers for the public. This is particularly true where uncontrollable air- ways occur within the destroyed rock or if former uranium mining areas are concerned. In these areas radon emanation resulting in undue radon concentration should be taken into account. This circumstance can be counteracted by suitable measures of ventilation. In the following the example of a uranium deposit in the Erzgebirge Mountains (Saxon Ore Mountains) is used to illustrate how statements about the ground flow through overlying rock can be made on the basis of systematic investigations. Finally comparisons with experience gained in coal mining yield orientation data which are used as input quantities in ventilation network calculations and in project preparation of mine fans. Last not least it is proved that endangering the population by radon can be excluded by installing an appropriate fan. INITIAL SITUATION From 1946 to 1989 the uranium deposit of Schlemal-Alberode was mined starting from superficial zones down to depths of 1,800 m. The total output amounted to 80,000 t of uranium, i.e. Schlemal Alberode is one of the largest uranium deposits in the world. The mine openings comprise a cavity of 40 million m3. Al- though thin seams (0.2 to 0.3 m) and steep to semi-steep veins (60 - 70 degrees on average) were extracted using the method of overhand cut-and-fill there were also deposit sections with larger thicknesses and poor ore zones, respectively, where especially after the war until about 1955 large openings were formed due to missing filling. Due to this uncontrolled, relatively "wild" mining considerable subsidence of the surface and fractures in the border zone of the subsidence area occurred. The town of Oberschlema was destroyed and an area of 0.14 km2 was damaged by mining involving a maximum subsidence of 6 m in the centre - called deformation area. The rehabilitation work for the deposit area of Schlemal Alberode involves the flooding of the openings up to a level of the Markus-Semmler-Sohle as long-term preventive measure. Fig. 1 shows the flooding level of October 1996. The level of the -540 m drift will probably be reached in June 1997. From that point of time a general rearrangement of the ventilation has to be made because the central return air ventilation via shaft 373 will no longer be possible. This shaft has no connection with the superficia1 system of mine openings. A new return air ventilation system based on shaft 382 as return air shaft will be designed (Fig. 1). The capacity of the future mine fan system will e.g. be determined by the flow conditions in the deformation area mentioned above. For this reason investigations were carried out in a test drift 13a on the level of the Markus-Semmler-Sohle in the stretching zone of the subsidence trough for several days (Fig. 2 and 3). INFLUENCE OF THE OPERATING CONDITIONS OF THE MAIN MINE FAN ON THE RADIATION SITUATION ON SURFACE The beginning of flooding in 1991 was also the beginning of the investigations into the options of future ventilation due to the reduction of the mining area. The first analyses of radon emanation made in May 1991 showed that only about 20 % of the total radon emanation result from systematically ventilated mine workings. This means that despite of existing dams the air streams through the majority of mine openings of the deposit. The analysis of the individual radon inflows illustrates the special problematic nature of the deposit involving all possible effects on the surface. The shutdown of the main mine fan over the long period between 2.10. and 6.10.1991 showed the essential influence of the operating conditions of the fans on the whole radiation situation on surface. Fig. 4 shows the comparison of the radon concentration level and its daughters during a 'normal" weekend with the level during long-term shutdown in the old 'Casino" of the papermill of Niederschlema. This papermill as well as the 'Casino" are situated in the outcropping zone of the deposit section of Niederschlema. The -60 m level was driven as the upper level in this area, from which the panels were driven to about 20 m below the surface. Also below the "Casino" there is such a panel in the vein 'Glirck", whose roof is directly situated below the building in a depth of 39 m. Directly next to it there is the raise 2 of the panel 'Namenlos" in a depth of 27 m. The graphics clearly shows the immediate increase in radon concentration as well as in the daughter concentration after the shutdown of the fans. The elimination of the artificially generated negative pressure results in the reversal of the convection direction due to the natural ventilating pressure. The interface structure allows the mine airto pass through aero- dynamic connections to the surface. Neglecting the meteorological parameters the concentrations of radon and its daughters in- creased by about 350 % as compared to a 'normal" weekend during longterm shutdown (i.e. in 4 days). Powerful, yet inexpensive, personal computers running Windows-95 operating systems provide powerful mine-wide monitoring capabilities when properly engineered. Long awaited conductivity over LAN, phone and Internet links provide new dimensions for sharing information throughout an operator's organization, in- deed around the world. On-line data analysis, archival data storage and historical trend viewing generate shared inputs to production, safety and maintenance personnel. Five years in development, Rel-Tek's new EZ-Trol/W-DX system was engineered around the pilfalls of a Windows environment. It now offers higher speeds, 3D animated graphics and long distance telemetry - all with better reliability than ever before possible. The ubiquitous DDS utility inherent in most Windows was discarded in favor of a lightning fast RAM format. Several ponderous interpretive programs were redesigned into a single compiled entity, thus avoiding the overhead from message conversion, handshaking and transfer. To make the system user friendly, a 'Wizard" utility helps operators set up and reconfigure their systems on site. In-mine data acquisition telemetry was also re- vamped, incorporating a unique noise avoidance scheme, dubbed the "DX" bus - enabling longer distances and higher reliability. 12- bit analog conversion provides the enhanced resolution needed for field scaling auto-cal sensors. By mid '96, eight EZ-TROLMI- DX systems were up and running, several for more than a year. Factory updating and assistance are possible over a phone or Internet link. Our factory testing of components routinely includes actual operation at 2400 BAUD over 14 miles of twisted pair wires.

Mechanical rock drilling is about 150 years old, and the fundamental principles of augering, penetration and dragging, pressure and rotation, and percussion have not appreciably changed. Surface mining blasthole drilling employs relatively shallow blastholes (to about 100 to 130 feet or 30 to 40 meters) with respect to the blasthole diameter and hole alignment while problematical is not a major universal problem. Modem underground mining methods are spacing development levels up to 400 feet (130 meters) apart, to take advantage of high powered mechanical drilling methods, requiring very long blastholes compared with surface mining. Blasthole alignment is a major problem in underground mining and this paper will address the aspects of percussion bit design which impact on hole alignment and drilling and blasting costs, i.e. bit geometry, cuttings removal, penetration-retraction.
