The effects of underground longwall coal mining on flow in perennial streams within the Pittsburgh seam basin were evaluated. Four streams above four different longwall mines were studied. Overburden depths at the study sites ranged from 500 to 600 feet. At all four locations, premining streamfow measurements were made to establish baseline flow conditions. Measurements were then repeated at each location after the longwall face passed beneath the stream. At one location, in which the longwall panel axis was roughly parallel to the stream, the streamflow was monitored as the longwall face advanced. Measurements at this location showed that temporary flow reduction occurred as the face advanced underneath; however, after the tensile portion of the traveling subsidence profile passed, this effect was lessened. At two of the sites in which the stream was roughly perpendicular to the panel axis, postmining streamfow increased across the panel and decreased over the development headings, such that the net lateral change in streamflow across the fully subsided panel and associated development headings was small compared to the measured flow.

Batterham and Algie began their paper on: `The role of technology in the minerals industry' (1995) by noting that while: it is often stated that innovation is central to the economic survival of mining and minerals processing in the face of global competition, .. . technology is often far from a core strategy in our industry. This point is correct. Throughout the world, as a broad generalisation, mining companies do not value technology development as a principal means of gaining competitive advantage. It is important to understand why this is the case. Batterham and Algie address this question by making distinctions between innovation, technology and research. They note that while: all successful (mining) companies are good at innovation . . . that innovation can proceed without any research and development and that it is innovation that generates the competitive advantage, not research and development per se. In this paper we accept these arguments. However, our focus is somewhat different. Whereas Batterham and Algie took a mining company's perspective on the technologies of mining and processing, we take a broader view of the opportunities for technology development for company Australia but, in order to focus the argument, we restrict our discussion to the area of mining (rather than processing); we focus particularly on mining systems and mining equipment. We begin by looking at the motivation of companies operating in any industrial sector to invest in research and development. Figure 1 recognises four levels of industrial maturity. For companies in the embryonic and growth stages R&D often is essential to initiating and developing the business. Mining, on the other hand, is a mature industry. In mature industries the conventional roles for R&D are to reduce costs, to extend product differentiation, or to develop new technology with the aim of rejuvenating the business. Next we ask whether these general-industry arguments apply to the mining industry. If they do then the mining industry should value R&D more highly; after all cost reductions and business rejuvenation are goals that are worth achieving. On the other hand if, for whatever reason, these general arguments do not apply to mining then this may lead the mining industry to invest only modestly, or not at all, in R&D. In this event, while this may be a rational decision for the mining industry, it may not be in the best interest of a nation like Australia where revenues from the sale of mineral products represent an important part of the country's economy.

Lead ions that originate from galena during the processing of complex sulfide ores migrate onto the surfaces of sphalerite and iron sulfide minerals. This results in poor selectivity during differential flotation. Generally, in sulfide ore processing, the lead-activated minerals float in the Cu/Pb rougher circuit. The surface lead complicates the zinc flotation circuit by lowering the concentrate grade. The effect of lead in the differential flotation of sphalerite from Cu-Pb-Zu and Pb-Zu ores is discussed. Plant and laboratory-test data are interpreted by determining the surface compositions of individual grains of sphalerite and iron sulfide particles. For the first time, surface compositions were determined by using laser-ionization mass spectrometry (LIMS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). Cationic and cationic species on the surface were analyzed to elucidate the phenomena. It was proven that these new techniques are very useful in understanding the basic mechanisms of a sulfide mineral-flotation system.

Specification of properly sized pillars to support the overburden is one of the most challenging aspects of salt mine design. Interest in salt pillar design is heightened by the recent flooding of the Retsof salt mine, water inflows to the K2 potash mine, and closing of the Belle Isle salt mine because of ground control problems. A series of numerical modeling analyses show that a simple pillar design equation for salt pillars adequately reproduces results of extensive modeling efforts. The paper describes (1) the basis for the pillar design equation, (2) equation verification by comparison with numerical modeling results, and (3) equation validation by comparison with measurements and observations of salt pillar behavior.

Maptek, an international development software company, released version 3.2 of its Vulcan three-dimensional mining and geological software package. This latest release is expected to give clients better graphics performance and improved overall solutions. In addition, the company also released the NT version of Vulcan for Unix and personal computers. More than 800 code changes have gone into the 3.2 release, the Lakewood, CO-based company said. Many of these changes were in response to requests from Maptek's customers. Others have been motivated internally by the company to achieve better performance in its Envisage graphics interface. The introduction of hot keys and user-defined menus makes Envisage a more flexible interface and a more productive working environment. A new animation option provides new ways to enhance the organization and display of data. The animated data can include point, string, grid, triangulation and photographic-draped data. The shaft-mapping facility is also included in version 3.2. It enables the cylindrical view of the shaft to be unwrapped and displayed on the screen while the data remains in its true world coordinates. Major upgrades to Vulcan include underground blast design and geotechnical modules. The new blast design module allows the user to develop a ring design in any plane defined by the stope layout. Radial and offset holes can be developed. User-friendly editing tools make adjustments to the initial design a simple task. The user defines the plotting and reporting of rings and plot style templates allow flexibility in reporting. New features in the geotechnical toolbox include options to create daylight windows and pitch lines on the stereo nets. Geotechnical databases can be directly updated from the interpretation of the stereo net. Direct annotation of the symbols on the net is now possible and the stereo net display can be customized. Improvements to the documentation and links within the text have made the on-line help easier to navigate. Maptek also released the NT version of Vulcan soft- ware. The comprehensive design of the software pack- age for Unix and personal computers provides a three-dimensional geological modeling and mine planning system within a natural graphics environment. Users who require the power to manipulate extra- large and complex data sets will still be served by the Unix platform. Users who handle small-to-large datasets can now choose between Unix and personal computer platforms. The NT version will appeal primarily to companies that already have a personal computer network. Response to industry feedback was the basis for developing the NT version. "We want to ensure that our clients receive the optimal product for their needs," said Nicolas Simon, vice president of Maptek in North America. Some advantages of the NT version include: ? Most mining professionals are familiar with the personal computer platform. ? All of the familiar personal computer tools are now available to Vulcan users. ? Resource modeling tools that previously required the powerful Unix workstations have been brought into the personal computer environment. This will help mining companies save money. "Hot forming and superplasticity in powder metallurgy aluminum alloys and composites is reviewed. The effects of alloy composition, particulate composition, size, and size distribution is summarized. The role of climb distance for recovery is described in connection with the size of strengthening phases. In materials with fine strengthening phases on the order of one micron or less, high strain rate superplastic deformation processes are likely. However, the quality of superplastic deformation depends on the prior processing history, and these effects are reviewed. Very few data describing the effects of hot forming history on post-forming properties exist, but some results emerging in the literature are compared.IntroductionHot deformation in aluminum based materials is done for several technological purposes, such as thermomechanical processing to alter mechanical properties of simple forms, and/or final shaping operations to produce a complex shaped part by means of extrusion, forging, or superplastic forming. In the interest of improving the mechanical properties of aluminum based materials, two microstructural design strategies are commonly used, dispersion strengthening, and composite strengthening. The introduction of fine, stable dispersions is commonly done for high temperature strength, and the dispersions are typically ceramic particles in the range of 10 nm to 1000 nm in volume fractions around 5 vol.% (Higashi et al., 1990; 1991a; 1991b; 1992; Bieler and Mukherjee, 1990; Otsuka et al., 1987; Bieler et al., 1991; Oliver and Nix, 1982). Alternatively, composite strengthening strategies using 10-40 v% of 3 µm to 40 µm ceramic particles provide high modulus and high strength aluminum based materials (Midling and Grong, 1995; Lloyd, 1994; Subramanian et al., 1995)."

Florida phosphates ore typically processed by reverse flotation with an intermediate acid-scrubbing step. A single-reagent flotation process, using fatty acids or amines as the collector, would eliminate the intermediate scrubbing step plus an additional flotation step. This would not only simplify the process flowsheet but would also result in reduced reagent costs. The potential of single-reagent flotation of Florida phosphates using fatty acids as the collector is examined in this study. Introduction The beneficiation scheme now used for Florida phosphates involves the following three steps (Smith, 1976: Lawyer et al.. 1978, 1984: Moudgil et al, 1976, 1979, 1986, 1987): •rougher flotation of fluorapatitc particles using a fatty acid-fuel oil mixture as the collector. •scrubbing of fatty acid, and •cleaner flotation of silica particles using amine collector. Several attempts have been made to simplify the process flowsheet by floating either apatite or silica (not both, as is the current practice). However, single-reagent flotation schemes have had limitations in meting the concentrate-grade requirements of the phosphoric acid plants. In this study, an attempt was made to use a minimal amount of the fatty acid-fuel oil collector to obtain an acceptable grade (rougher) concentrate. Invariably, the recovery in such cases is expected to be lower than in the conventional rougher-flotation step. Therefore, scavenger flotation of tailings with additional fatty-acid collector was conducted to improve the phosphate recoveries.

Two key components make up the core of a rapid excavation operation. They are: the breaking up of the rock and its removal. Owing to the complexity inherent in mechanical rock-breaking and the relative infancy of the art, for a number of years the first of these two components has received virtually undivided attention from the industry. Only recently has some concern been expressed about the technology and the economics of the much ignored second component: muck removal. As the continuous boring machine's percentage downtime continues to trend lower in the future, the need for adequate and more effective materials handling systems in rapid excavation will become increasingly more acute. (1) Recognition of the need for a broader and more far-sighted approach to our problem has been eloquently underscored in the conclusions of the Committee on Rapid Excavation sponsored by the National Research Council: "Ultimate attainment of the desired cost and speed improvements is significantly dependent on recognition of the excavation process as a system whose subsystems are critically inter-related. Substantial amounts of full-scale field testing of integrated driving, muck removal, and support subsystems are required." (2)

With the utilization of most of the "high dam" sites for hydro-electric power and the completion of most railroad routes, many tunnel contractors were extremely doubtful that tunnel driving would continue to be an important element of heavy contracting. Experience has proved otherwise. The ever-increasing need for rapid transit and for pollution control have generated, and will continue for the indefinite future to generate, a very high level of tunneling activity. At the same time, the costs of construction have traveled an upward curve in the tunnel industry, as in all other types of construction. As a result, Owners, Engineers and Contractors have sought ways and means of constructing more economically through the development and use of labor-saving devices and techniques. The development of mining machines and lasers has contributed tremendously to such economy. Before giving you a contractor's viewpoint on Owner-Engineer-Contractor relationships in tunneling, it may be well to provide some background as to matters which give rise to that viewpoint. Construction contractors in general, and tunnel contractors in particular, have always had to contend with the physical environment in which the work has to be accomplished. However, when a building contractor has constructed his foundation, and certainly after he has "closed in", he deals thereafter with known physical conditions, or at least with conditions which he could reasonably have estimated would occur. Except, perhaps, for the hazard as to earthquakes, he has cleared Nature's threats. A tunnel contractor, however, must give thought to what the physical environment may do to his job, each and every day that he is driving a tunnel. "The thermal mass flow controller, or MFC, has become an instrument of choice for the monitoring and controlling of process gas flow throughout the materials processing industry. In the semiconductor industry, these MFCs are used on over 70% of the processing tools. Reliability and accuracy are major concerns for the users of the MFCs. Calibration and characterization technologies for the development and implementation of mass flow devices are described. Sources of inaccuracy in process gas handling are described, and a model to correct for these inaccuracies is outlined. A gravimetric calibrator is described that allows flow sensors to be calibrated in corrosive, reactive gases to an accuracy of 0.3% of reading, at least an order of magnitude better than previously possible. All described capabilities are implemented in a Department of Energy User Facility which is available to industry and universities to test and develop gas flow sensors and controllers and evaluate their performance related to environmental effects, reliability, reproducibility, and accuracy.IntroductionMaterials processing is at the heart of semiconductor manufacturing. To make today's advanced integrated circuits, silicon wafers are subjected to over 200 process steps. Most of these steps involve processes such as etching, implanting, diffusion, annealing, deposition, and lithography (resist deposition and hardening). Often one or more process gases are used to complete the process step. To achieve the quality and performance required in the micro devices, accurate measurement and control of these gases is essential. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), in conjunction with the semiconductor industry, has been working to improve process gas measurement and control accuracy and reliability. Standardized test methods have been developed to characterize and benchmark the performance of mass flow controllers (MFCs), the method of choice for monitoring and controlling gas delivery. Testbeds have been designed and fabricated to produce repeatable and accurate data using these standards. Baseline testing was performed along with development of a unique mass flow instrument, the gravimetric calibrator."

Two of the major ground control safety issues confronting underground mine operations today are shaft pillar stability and the failure of rock around active mine openings. Failure of a mine shaft can lead to the entrapment of workers. Failure of rock around active underground mine openings can lead to roof falls, which in turn can result in worker injuries and fatalities. Finite-element analysis has proven to he a reliable method for predicting stresses and displacements around underground mine openings. However, this is a complex and time consuming technique and is not used as often as it could be in mine planning. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate one technique developed at the Spokane Research Center that allows the user to create a finite-element model of a two-dimensional section of an underground mine in a relatively straightforward manner. This model is then used to calculate stresses, displacements, and safety factors around mine openings. With this information, mine planners can evaluate the stability of mine openings as well as the stability of pillars and mine shafts. This analysis will help develop mining sequences and layouts that minimize stresses in that section of the mine. This, in turn, should minimize the occurrence of shaft failure, roof falls, and other hazards associated with underground mining.

The shale response to moisture changes and the major finding of the appropriate research concerning this subject are briefly reported in this paper. Also described are mine ambient atmospheric conditions which are responsible for moisture changes in mines. The need for a quantitative measure of the weathering potential of roof. rock is demonstrated in relation to its influence on safety and the potential for increasing the cost of mine operations. The weatherability test presented in this paper has been developed and used in many mines. It imitates the natural process in a mine by subjecting the rock sample to alternating wet and dry cycles. The natural changes are thus accelerated, but are similar to the natural conditions to which the surrounding excavation rock will be exposed. The measure of the weatherability index is the percentage of the initial sample mass remaining after the test as the largest fragment of the sample. Thus, the index changes, from 100% for rock affected by moisture changes which disintegrates completely, to 0% for rock totally unaffected. In this paper, the apparatus and testing procedures are described. Also presented are examples of test results. with a discussion of the design implication to he considered by mine planners.

Modular Mining's Computerized Dispatch System was selected based on reputation and superior customer support. Modular's dispatch system is a fleet management system that uses computer, data communication and global positioning sys- tem technology to produce automatic, optimized haul truck as- signments. Optimization is achieved by equally distributing trucks to shovels so that truck queuing and shovel idling times are mini- mized. The Benbrook Connection tunnel forms approximately 6,666 m (19,560 ft) of17,678 m (58,000 ft) of raw water pipeline connecting Lake Benbrook with the Rolling Hills Water Treatment Plant. This connection is designed to minimize costs to the owners, the Tarrant Regional Water District, for providing raw water to its’ various clients. The geological formations through which the tunnel passes and the design requirements resulted in some-what unique applications of initial ground support systems which were modified by the con-tractor to optimize the mining operations. The pipe sections, fabricated in 12 m (40 ft) sections, are concrete lined and coated steel pipe. Construction of the work shaft and tail tunnel was also modified to suit the contractors methods. A Lovat universal TBM was chosen to excavate through the various rock types. The pipe sections will be transported using beam carriers.

In this study the characteristic factors and formation mechanisms for the hydrothermal preparation of a -quartz crystal powders were investigated to find the optimum synthetic conditions. The degree of Q -quartz crystal face development depended on the relative growth rate of a particular form that varies considerably with the degree of supersaturation, the reaction temperature, the concentration of mineralizers, and the presence of seed crystals in the feedstock. Alkali hydroxides and alkali halides were found to be effective in the reactions as mineralizers, which added in order to increase the solubility of the feedstock. The fine Q -quartz crystal powders were obtained in the temperature range of 250-450% and pressure range of 100-300atm. As the concentration of mineralizers increased, the particle size of crystalline powders became smaller at lower reaction temperatures. The fractional size distribution of synthetic crystal powders was depended on the hydrothermal conditions. As the reaction time and the amount of seed crystals increased, the width of particle size distribution became narrower. The weight mean particle size was in the range of 1 to 10m. The characterization of the products were carried out using XRD. SEM. PSA, FT-IR, Raman spectrometer.

"IntroductionThe Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) located in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, in eastern Canada, was established in 1967. Its mandate at that time was to facilitate a phased downsizing of the coal industry and developing viable replacement industries. The oil crisis in the early 1970s changed CBDC’s mandate and focus was modified to increase coal production to support Nova Scotia Power Commission’s “off oil” policy for their power generators. In the late 1980s the mandate to develop viable replacement industries was eliminated and CBDC became primarily a coal mining company. CBDC presently operates two underground coal mines, Phalen Colliery and Prince Colliery, using a retreat longwall method of mining. Both mines operate beneath the Atlantic Ocean. CBDC also operates associated infrastructure — central workshops, a railroad, coal preparation plant, and international pier. The Need For Substantial ChangeOver the last few years, CBDC has been facing some challenging issues, including improving labour management relations and achieving financial self-sufficiency and profitability. Recent achievements with regard to human resource issues, especially in the areas of collective bargaining, absenteeism, and attendance, show noticeable improvements. All participants should be commended for successfully concluding the collective bargaining process with all four CBDC unions, CUPE; CAW; IAM&AW; and UMWA. However, although these changes are encouraging, even critical in the short term, they are not sufficient to ensure the long-term viability of the company. Market ForcesShort- and long-term financial realities are drawing the need for further substantive changes. The corporation has a mandate to achieve financial self-sufficiency by the year 1999. This goal can only be achieved through a combination of cost reductions and productivity gains, specifically, a reduction in the workforce of 658 and an increase in production of 800 000 tonnes annually. This increase in productivity requires CBDC to re-think the way it does things.In the longer term, CBDC faces even greater challenges. The energy market is becoming more competitive. The electrical utilities across Canada are anticipating deregulation and are positioning themselves for the resultant competition. As primary fuel supplier to Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI), the corporation will have to become ever more competitive to stay in business."

Structural geological modelling is a process which results in a 3D computer model that represents the essence of the geological and structural understanding of an area and is presented in a way that is directly useable, typically by internal customer groups. BHP Iron Ore operates a number of open cut iron ore mines in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The largest mine is the Mt Whaleback Mine located at Newman close to the southern margin of the Pilbara Craton. The structurally complex Mt Whaleback Mine is the largest metalliferous single pit open cut mine in Australia with over 1.6 billion tonnes of original iron ore resource. Additional to the Mt Whaleback Mine, a number of satellite open cut iron ore mines are operated by BHP Iron Ore (BHPIO) in the Newman area. BHPIO also operates the Yarrie mine approximately 400 km north of Newman at the northern edge of the Pilbara Craton Most of the BHPIO mines are located in the Archean- Proterozoic Hamersley Province that overlies the Archean granite-greenstone terrain of the Pilbara Craton. The orebodies are considered to be the result of supergene enrichment of the approximately 2.5 Ga Brockman Iron Formation and the slightly older Marra Mamba Iron Formation. Folding represents the most prevalent and penetrative structural element in the Newman area. Four folding phases have been identified regionally (Fj, F2, F3, F5), while a more local folding deformation (F4) developed mainly in the Mt Whaleback and Orebody 29 mine area. A northeast trending, southeast dipping, 45 km long, high angle, normal fault zone, the Whaleback Fault Zone, cuts through the Mt Whaleback mine resulting in an approximately 1400 in gap in stratigraphy. Additionally, two large, low angle, normal faults, the East Footwall Fault and the Central Fault, are present at the Mt Whaleback Mine. During the formation of supergene orebodies, up to 40 - 45 per cent volume loss occurred resulting in local non-tectonic deformation in the orebodies.

The Na-feldspar orebodies in Sardinia occur along structures belonging to a regional ENE-WSW system that developed during the late stages of the Hercynian orogeny, and that was reactived during the Alpine orogeny. The main petrographic facies include granitoids, albitized granitoids, albitites (more or less rich in quartz), and albitites containing Mg minerals. Field observations and petrological and geochemical data point toward a metasomatic origin for the albitite orebodies. Albitization involved depletion of K from K-feldspar and biotite, dissolution of free quartz, and a lowering of Sr/Na2O and CaO/Na2O ratios in the protolith, under conditions of a positive thermal gradient. The absence of later K-metasomatism implies that, during a subsequent decline in temperature, the composition of the albitizing fuids was modified by an influx of meteoric or other waters.
