The brown-coal opencast mines in Germany's Rhineland have to cope with several problems. Predominant are densely populated areas with highly productive farmland, many railroads, highways, and rivers, as well as towns and farm settlements which have to be removed before or during the lifetime of a mine. Also the ground- water table has to be lowered to keep the deep opencast mines dry and stable. These problems urged a development towards deep opencast mines with powerful machines; the large material movement and the high coal production are the basis for the economic success in working the Rhenish brown-coal deposits. Up to now, bucket wheel excavators with a daily capacity of 100,000 m3 (130,000 cu yd) are in operation. Machines of twice this capacity are under construction. Corresponding to the excavators development, the stackers' capacity has to be increased too. The new stackers will reach a daily capacity of 240,000 m3 (310,000 cu yd). The haulage in the mine is performed by conveyor belt systems, which are arranged in such a manner that the belt lines meet at a belt switching point. Here the incoming lines may be connected to the outgoing ones so as to direct the material flow to the desired receiving stations. At the moment there are conveyor belts in operation with a width of 2.2 m (7.2 ft); the new belts will have a layout for 37,000 t/h (40,770 stph), the width of which amounts to 3.0 m (9.8 ft). All belts and driving stations on benches are shiftable.

A suspension electrolysis method has been developed which enabled a direct anodic extraction of zinc from zinc sulfide concentrate and simultaneously oxidized sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur. The investigation was performed in a laboratory-scale electrolytic cell, where the zinc sulfide concentrate particles (chemical composition in weight percent: 61.1% Zn, 2.3% Fe, 30.6% S, 3.4% SiO2 were suspended with or without graphite powder in a dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte. The main parts of the cylindrical electrolytic cell are shown in [Fig. 1]. The cathode (1), a rod of aluminum, is set at the center of the cell. Many of the gold deposits in the Timmins• area show a close spatial association to ultramafic metavolcanics. Available analytical data suggest that ultramafic rocks contain significantly higher gold contents than other major rock types. In addition, recent analyses by Keays (1975) suggest that talc-carbonate alteration of ultramafic rocks releases significant quantities of gold. It is proposed that the ultramafic volcanics formed the principal source of gold for the deposits in Timmins, and that the gold was derived from the ultramafic flows when they were extensively carbonatized. Carbonatization of the ultramafic rocks and emplacement of the auriferous quartz-carbonate veins was probably coincident with the last major period of deformation in the gold camp. Delineation of hitherto unrecognized ultramafic volcanics could be an important guide to the discovery of further gold deposits.

I reached New York at the start of my second South American adventure on Jan. 9, 1916. In the Anaconda office I found that we were not to take the steamer for two weeks which gave me time to study reports on Potrerillos and Corocoro. Reno Sales, whom I had met in Butte only casually, was to go with us to South America. Though he was only a little older than I, he was already an unquestioned leader of our profession, and we became and remained good friends. William Braden was in New York and would return to Santiago with us. Tom Hamilton would also be returning from a vacation. Leighton Stewart, a young engineer who was to work for Braden, was going on the steamer with us, taking along his wife. And of course Dr. Ricketts would go along. He had just become engaged to John Greenway's half sister, Kate Greenway, and in order not to be away from her longer than was necessary, he did not reach New York until a day before we sailed. This made eight of us who would be in the party. We were to go to Corocoro first, as Braden had taken an option on the Chilean company there. Development was already under way. As reports came in by mail we tried to get as good an idea of the property as we could before the actual examination. Mr. Thayer "put us up" at India House, one of the best lunch clubs in New York, and Reno and I ate our lunches there almost every day. Thayer, Braden, and Cornelius Kelley, who was to succeed Mr. Ryan as president of Anaconda, joined us when they could. At the lunches they told us about the under- ground war in Butte a few years earlier. When I wrote my chapter on the Butte wars in Romantic Copper more than 15 years later I could not help being biased a bit by my friends, all of whom were on the Anaconda side. But their opponents in the Clark and Heinze camp were just as biased in their comments on my book.

In May, 1966, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced a program to encourage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national security. Upon learning of the copper production expansion program, Duval Corporation entered into negotiations with GSA for development of the Sierrita copper-molybdenum property under the program. Agreements between the GSA and Duval Sierrita Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Duval Corporation, were concluded in 1967, with the Sierrita Concentrator beginning operation in 1970 at a designed capacity of 72,000 STPD. Subsequent additions and modifications have expanded capacity to 90,000 STPD. This property, located approximately 20 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, represents an investment including working capital of about $200 million. These funds were provided from an $83 million loan from GSA, repayable in copper valued at 38 cents per pound, $48.75 million of bank loans subject to U. S. Government V- loan guarantees, and Company capital contributions. Current general operating statistics for the concentrator are listed below: Ore Grade 0.32% Cu., 0.030% Mo. Since 1970 Mount Isa fines Limited has made a significant increase in blister copper production from approximately 100,000 to 155,000 mt per annum and in fact 161,040 mt were produced in the calendar year 1974. Flowsheet developments including fluidised bed roasting and converter slag flotation are discussed, particularly their contributions to minimising major equipment changes in smelting and converting. The use of model- ling and simulation techniques for such an exercise is mentioned. The paper reports the alterations made to both equipment and operating techniques in the reverberatory furnace and converter sections to achieve the regular production of 250 mt of blister per converter day from a 41% Cu matte grade. The effects of flux composition on converting performance are highlighted. The air quality control programme is discussed in relation to its restriction of blister copper production.

"Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited is located at Joutel in North-Western Québec. The mine is about four miles north-west from the town on the left bank of the Harricana River. The present mining is 1,800 feet deep with an extensive geological development below this level.HISTORY The development of the ore body started sometimes in 1967 and then the operation ceased in 1969 and again reopened in 1973 due to higher prices of gold. During these periods of active development, a considerable metallurgical research has been done by different laboratories and research and design companies.The original capacities of the Mill differed as much as 30%. So did the concept of the ore treatment. The original design of the mill was for 200 TPD of ore with straight cyanidation. The problems with low gold extraction, high reagent consumption and poor filtration resulted in a decrease of the expected mill output to an initial 550 TPD with gold recoveries in the order of 40 to 60%.Although the studies and research work done on the ore varied, all of them had a common conclusion: a very fine grind is needed to expose gold. The mining method (sub-level blast hole mining) now provides the ore that differs from that on which the metallurgical test work was conducted and the original capacity calculations had been done.These variations in the concept consequently led to the conclusion that the size of gold is a determining factor for the process.Kilborn Engineering provided the original design with the Leslie Eng¬ineering completing the design. The metallurgical test work has been done by the Department of Energy, Mines & Resources, Lakefield Research of Canada, Kilborn Engineering and Sidam Incorporated.The new flotation section with secondary grinding has been designed and put into operation by the company in December 1975 with the results yet to be evaluated."

Due to the increased number of complaints by property owners to blasting related industries an apparent need for a clearer understanding of blasting-related damage is needed. We feel that direct structural crack monitoring during such blasts is the appropriate measurement technique. Instrumentation and interpretation of results for taking such measurements are described in this paper. Typical results from blasting and other environmental effects are also described which can eventually be related to Fracture Mechanics principles in the hope of clarifying such disputes in an equitable manner.

Investigations on the beneficiation of sedimentary Moroccan phosphate ores are reported in four separate parts. The first discusses electrochemical phenomena at the solid-aqueous solution interface for minerals of the apatite group. In the second part, the electrochemical properties of the calcareous gangue associated with the phosphate ore are investigated. The flotation of calcite and phosphate oölites, using both anionic and cationic collectors, is discussed in the third part. It is shown that selective recovery could be obtained for precise concentrations of collectors and pH ranges. Results of work aimed at optimizing depression of phosphate oölites during inverse flotation of the carbonate gangue with sodium oleate are reported in Part 4.

Flue gas desulfurization when burning western U.S. coals can be expected to be easier to achieve and less costly than when burning higher sulfur eastern and central coals. However, western coals cannot generally be burned in compliance with federal and state new source emission standards without some degree of control. Western coals and lignite represent about 20% of total U.S. recoverable reserves with 90% of that strip minable, and their production is predicted to increase from the 60 million tons mined in 1973 to 300 million tons in 1985. Most will be used for electric power generation, where low sulfur content is a paramount concern. Western coals are predominantly below 1% sulfur; low compared with typical values of 2 and 3% for eastern and central coals. Coal cleaning for removal of sulfur is not commercially practiced on Western coals, which typically contain half organic and half pyritic sulfur. This is the final report on Grant No. G0144067. The report presents the results of a number of laboratory studies carried cut in several different ways to determine the effectiveness of foam for blocking the flow of gas in coal. The effectiveness; (of foam for retarding or blocking the flow gas in various porous media has been observed by many investigators1-4 but we are not aware of similar detailed studies in coal. Because of the diversity of our experiments, the key findings and general conclusions are presented very briefly in Section II. As a convenience to the reader a complete table of cements is included to enable the reader to find those experiments and studies of greatest interest.

The concept of limit burning velocities is used to formulate a quantitative theory of flammability limits. Competing processes dissipate power from a combustion wave and quench propagation at some characteristically low limit velocity. There are four competing processes and one complication: (a) Free, buoyant convection, (b) conductive-convective wall losses, (c) radiation, (d) selective, diffusional demixing (the complication), and (e) flow gradient effects (flame stretch). These complexities are unraveled by creating an idealization that is initially freed from these competing processes. The ideal serves as a standard, and its burning velocity (Su), ideal is a unique function of the initial thermodynamic variables of state. By adding each process individually, it is possible to evaluate their significance, quantitatively, in terms of a limit velocity (Su)a , b , c , or e , and to explore the nature of their cooperative interactions. The larger the limit velocity, the more significant the process. The apparently diverse observations of flammability behavior are readily unified within this simple, conceptual framework.

General An important part of any mine power distribution system is its con¬nection to earth or ground. The grounding network serves to protect men and machinery from the hazards associated with electrical equipment which is operating improperly. Since the mine site is determined by the location of the rock or mineral to be extracted, the conditions required for the installation of an adequate grounding system are not always easily met. If annual rainfall is low or soil resistivity is high, an extensive array of buried metallic conductors may be necessary to assure a low-resistance connec¬tion to earth. Measurement of soil parameters can be made before the construction of a grounding grid is begun, and the configuration of a metallic network, which will yield the desired values of earth resistance and potential gradient, thereby ascertained. Proper design at the time the ground bed is installed will save much time and expense in later years. Ground conductors extend from the buried grid to each piece of mo¬bile and portable equipment via overhead lines or multi-conductor cables. In this fashion all machine frames are referenced to the same potential as the grounding medium. Protective circuitry must be installed to monitor\current flow in the ground conductors or the potential drop across the neutral grounding resistor, which is placed between the grounding grid and the neutral point on the distribution transformer secondary. Time and motion studies were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the hand and machine dismantling of scrapped auto starter motors, generators, and alternators for recovery of copper, aluminum, and iron. The studies showed that an individual with power handtools and convenient access to a hydraulic press, power bandsaw, acetylene torch, and power lathe could, in an 8-hour day, disassemble about 100 starters, or 150 generators, or 30 alternators. The scrap copper yield would be 280, 390, and 45 pounds, respectively, and the iron yield would be about seven times the copper weight. About 100 pounds of aluminum would be obtained from the alternators.

The purpose of this paper is to make a comparative cost analysis of domestic and foreign exploration projects which developed into mines during the 1960-1974 time period. A total of 18 mining companies, American and Canadian, were approached to solicit cost data on domestic and foreign exploration projects which developed into mines. Only 20 percent of the companies to which questionnaires were sent made data available. Several companies answered negatively, informing us that they would have difficulty in attempting to sort our costs. Some companies were usable to release cost details. It is comforting, however, to realize that some of the non-contributing companies expressed eagerness to hear the findings of this paper. Inasmuch as the data available on exploration expenditures is, in some cases, somewhat uncertain and that no two mining companies follow the same system of cost allocations, the results obtained in this analysis should he interpreted as trends of a general character.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is engaged in many diverse programs fur improving mine safety. One area of interest to the Bureau is new and improved means for minimizing the hazards of accidental gas ignition or electrical shock should the frame of an off-track machine assume potential above ground. Various means presently used to prevent such occurences are the use of ground fault detectors for phase to ground faults in ac machines, and grounding conductors and diodes in dc machines. In a three phase ac power center, a phase to ground fault may be detected by monitoring the current in the grounding resistor which is required between the power center neutral on the load side of the power center transformer and ground. Another method for detecting a ground fault is to pass the three load conductors through a toroidal core transformer. The phase currents vectorially add up to zero if none of the phases are faulted, and hence the voltage of the transformer secondary is either zero or not zero if one of the phases is unbalanced or faulted.
