Presented below is a review of how the objectives, as outlined in the statement of the problem, were achieved. 1. Methods of evaluating the performance of grounding systems must be described. These methods are the subject of Chapter III. 2. Field trips to operating mines should be undertaken, and a cri¬tique of their grounding systems made upon the basis of obser¬vation and the application of the above techniques. An analysis of field trip data, along with practical recommendations, is in¬cluded in Chapter IV, while a complete review of all field trips is given in Appendix I. 3. Because of their thoroughness, present coal mine regulations should be evaluated, and their applicability to open-pit environ¬ments appraised. This has been done in consultation with governmental agency, manufacturing, operating mine, and consult¬ing engineers. As stated in Chapter IV, insight gained through field observations has served to amplify and extend the base of knowledge from which the recommendations were made. 4. The results of these investigations should lead to suggested Federal standards. Such recommendations comprise Appendix II. In addition, several important factors, which are discussed in Chapter IV, were brought to light as a direct result of the field research. 5. In attempting to assess the contributions of Antoine Gaudin to the profession which he illuminated for almost a half-century, we will need to examine a very broad canvas. He was active in three significant areas: as a teacher; in research, both through his own endeavors and those of his students; and as a consultant to the mining industry and to the Government. Beyond these specific contributions, there was the major personal influence he had on scores of students, friends, and colleagues in the profession. If a single measure of the man's contribution is to be found, it will be the extent and direction in which he influenced the practice of his profession. To find this we should examine the state of miner- al processing when he began his activities in the 1920's, the progress which has taken place over the past half-century, and the part his activities played in this advance. However, there is a provocative and broader examination which I have chosen to make instead. This is to examine the past century in mineral processing through the lives of three men who, by common agreement, stand on the heights, both in teaching and in their contributions to industry: Robert H. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart, and the man whose memory we honor this evening, Antoine M. Gaudin. Their careers, by coincidence, cover just a century. This is also AIME's first century, and the first century of mineral industry education in the United States. In fact, mineral processing itself on any significant scale in the country encompasses only a century and a quarter. BEGINNINGS OF PRACTICE IN THE U.S. Before the 1840qs, U.S. mining, except for coal and iron ore, was on a small scale and was confined to the eastern states, with processing practically nonexistent. The 1840's saw the beginning of Michigan native copper production, including ore dressing; the 18501s, iron ore production in Minnesota; and the 18601s, lead production and processing in Missouri. But the most explosive event was the California gold rush after 1848, which not only brought tens-of-thousands of fortune hunters to the West, but also catalyzed broad mining activities and processing within the following decades. Included in the general category of clays is a large and varied assemblage of nonmetallic silicate minerals which characteristically occur as fine-grained particles having flaky, sheetlike, or rod-shaped form. Most, though not all, are hydrous aluminum silicates. Amount and kind of impurities vary greatly, and these strongly influence the uses of the various clay types. Clays occur in a wide range of geological situations: as bedded sedimentary deposits composed of the weathering products of feldspar and other minerals; as alteration products of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks weathered or hydrothermally altered in place; and, to a more limited extent, as hydrothermally introduced materials. TYPES AND MARKETS On the basis of chemical composition and crystal structure, two major groups of clay minerals recognized are the "kandites" or kaolin group, and the "smectites" or montmorillonite group. Another major type is illite, particularly important as a constituent of shales. Two additional mineral species having economic importance are attapulgite (palygorskite) and sepiolite. For present purposes, however, a classification based on utilization is more appropriate. The U.S. Bureau of Mines recognizes six types of clay: kaolin, ball clay, fire clay, bentonite, fuller's earth, and miscellaneous clay. Kaolin The kaolin group of minerals consists of the mineral species kaolinite, halloysite (metahalloysite), dickite, and nacrite, although the latter two are not being produced commercially. Kaolin, also called china clay, is a high-purity white material. Perhaps it is best known as a principal ingredient in the manufacture of chinaware, porcelain, and other high-quality ceramic products. However, by the mid-1970s very close to 50% of the kaolin produced in the United States was going to the paper industry for use as a filler and coating material. Manufacture of refractories uses about 12% of U.S. production. Kaolin is also used in plastics, in the rubber industry as a filler in footwear, electrical cable, and similar products, and as a conditioner of rubber for automobile tires to add strength and abrasion resistance. Smaller amounts are used in printing ink, paint, and adhesives; as insecticide carriers; in the production of catalysts for the petroleum refining industry; and in many other industrial and commercial applications. Production and use of kaolin in the United States doubled in the ten years from 1946 to 1956, and doubled again by 1966. Growth continues at a rate of about 7 % per annum.

This report describes the feasibility of mining the oil-shale deposits of the Piceance Creek basin in Colorado by an integrated open pit system. The study is based upon a comprehensive analysis of pertinent environmental, economic, and engineering factors. Ten mining cases are investigated, and the mine design and cost estimates for each case are presented in this report. Nine of the cases represent three cutoff grades, defining oil shale ore as equal to and above 15 gallons per ton (gpt), 20 gpt, and 25 gpt, at three ore production levels of 500,000 tons per day (TPD), 1,250,000 TPD, and 2,500,000 TPD. The tenth case is an alternate design of the 500,000 TPD production rate at the above 15 gpt cutoff grade. The report consists of Volume I, a technical and cost comparison of the ten cases; Volume II-Part I, a detailed explanation of the estimating methods used; and Volume II-Part 2, a more detailed discussion of the technical and cost features of the ten cases than is presented in Volume I.

Experimental results obtained from large-scale (7 ton), long-term (500 days) leaching of low-tenor copper sulfide ores were interpreted by a geometric model involving the movement of a reaction zone through the ore fragments. The postulated leaching mechanism involved mixed kinetics and included diffusion of the reacting species through the host rock and a chemical reaction at the surface of the mineral particles. Ore properties which were considered were Ore particle size and shape, grade of ore, and mineral content. Excellent agreement between the mixed kinetic model and the laboratory leaching results was obtained when -1/2-in. ore particles were not included in the leach. Also, a satisfactory prediction of copper recovery from +1/2-in. ore with a different particle size distribution was made; however, it was necessary to modify the shape factor in the model. Prediction of copper recovery from an ore sample which included the -1/2-in. fine fraction and leaching for 460 days was 56.5%, and the recovery from leaching was 47.0%. The presence of fines caused solution channeling and a deficiency of oxygen which inhibited the leaching rate. Also, compaction of fines around coarser particles interfered with circulation around the ore particles, and bulk solution transport probably was a rate controlling factor.

Fine cleaning, say, -28 mesh, is done by shaking tables, washing cyclones, and flotation, or, until recently, the fines were either incorporated into the clean coal or simply discarded--not infrequently, the latter. In 1972, only 13 million tons of raw coal were cleaned by flotation in the United States, and from this 8.4 million tons of clean coal were produced (1). The percentage of clean coal produced by flotation in Europe (England, West Germany, Poland, U.S.S.R., etc.) is substantially higher. However, coal flotation has grown rapidly in the United States from only a few plants in 1950 to 31 in 1960 (2) and 66 in 1970 (1). Virtually all new preparation plants incorporate flotation into their basic flowsheet. INTRODUCTION Gaudin (1), considered that "the mechanism of mineral collection is the central problem of flotation theory". From their work on adsorption phenomena in flotation for more than fifty years (2), Gaudin and his co-workers have made major contributions to the elucidation of this mechanism, a fact acknowledged by their contemporaries in the field (e.g. (3)). Their investigations in a number of areas, e.g. demonstrating that submonolayer quantities of adsorbed collector species can induce flotation, or identifying the influence of substances which can activate or depress (1), have helped to provide the basis for and the development of a theory to account for the interaction between mineral and collector. It was established in the late fifties (4) that the presence of oxygen is a prerequisite for the flotation of metal sulfides with thiol collectors. This fact rendered inadequate the concept of simple ion adsorption being responsible for rendering these minerals hydrophobic. The requirement for oxygen has been explained (1) in terms of this species being a component in chemical reactions between the sulfide surface and the collector. Gaudin has been instrumental in identifying the products of chemical reactions at sulfide minerals (1.5), a line of work which has been continued particularly by Finkelstein and co-workers in South Africa (6). The use of electrokinetic or zeta-potential phenomena in studies of the properties of mineral sulphides has increased greatly over recent years. This review aims to examine and discuss the body of literature on the subject of electrokinetic properties of sulphides in a comprehensive and critical manner. Although the review covers the period from 1925 to 1975, it is only in the past ten years that researchers have been fully aware of the implications and problems of chemical reactions, notably oxidation and precipitation reactions, on the surface properties of sulphide minerals. These papers are discussed in more detail than the earlier publications. A table containing a list of determinations of iso-electric- points and points-of-zero-charge of mineral sulphides, and the methods employed in obtaining these results, is presented.

Coal refuse slurry impoundments are dams constructed of coarse coal refuse to impound fine refuse (slurry) and water (25 to 30% solids). Both products are waste from coal preparation plants. A number of these structures in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky were investigated to determine embankment stability. During the investigation a variety of embankment designs were encountered. The investigation determined the soil and geological characteristics of the embankments and the sites. This was accomplished by a test drilling and monitor installation (observation wells and piezometers) program, geologic study, and large-scale mapping which allowed subsurface profiles of the embankments to be constructed. The laboratory testing program concentrated on textural classification of the coal refuse, permeability, and determining strength parameters to be utilized in the stability analyses. For the stability analyses, the modified Fellenius slip circle, simplified Bishop slip circle, and analysis for translational failure were utilized. In all stability analyses hydrostatic pressure and seismic acceleration probability were considered. This investigation indicated that 62% of the embankments analyzed were in a stable condition. The coal seam, the type of roof rock, and the gradation of the refuse influence the degree of compaction obtainable and the permeability of refuse. The shear strength of coal refuse appears to be controlled by its composition, moisture content, degree of compaction, amount and grain size of fines present. This investigation demonstrated these embankments should not be treated as pure state-of-the-art dams consideration must be given to the particular properties of coal refuse and the total refuse disposal system. Refuse dam slurry impoundments generally lack the site selection phase that is standard practice with siting most other types of dams.

The sign of the surface potential for complex non-reactive ionic solids cannot be predicted solely from consideration of the hydration energy of gaseous ions which constitute the ionic lattice. Accurate analysis of these systems must involve the hydration energy of surface ions, which requires knowledge of the crystal structure, the identification of cleavage planes, and the calculation of binding energies of surface ions. Surface binding energies for ionic solids can be deter- mined if the Surface Madelung Constant is known. A computational technique was developed for the calculation of Madelung Constants for infinite lattices which gives excellent agreement with the values calculated by other more complicated methods reported in the literature. Extension of this technique permits the calculation of Surface Madelung Constants and binding energies of surface ions, ?Us, for semi-infinite solids. The hydration free energy of gaseous Ions, ?Fh, together with the calculated binding energy of surface ions, ?Us, allows calculation of the hydration energy of surface ions, ?Gh, as for the case of the ionic solid, MX:

The Singhbhum Copper Belt located in the state of Bihar in Eastern India bears evidence of ancient workings and indicates the existence of a civilized habitation in this region in the past. It was in 1833. how- ever, that the first official announcement of the occurrence of copper in the district was made. Although the occurrence was confirmed in 1847, it was not until 1857 that the first company was formed to exploit the deposits. This Company was dissolved in 1859 and from then until 1920, there were many unsuccessful attempts to develop and exploit the copper deposits in the Singhbhum area. In 1920. the Cordoba Copper Co. took an option on the Mosaboni area, which is nearly 10 km away from the present works located at Moubhandar, Ghatsila and exercising the option in 1924, purchased the mining rights from the Cape Copper Company. The Cordoba Copper Co. was then converted into Indian Copper Corporation Ltd. This was subsequently taken over by the Government of India in March 1972 and is now known as Indian Copper Complex (ICC), forming one of the two smelting units of Hindustan Copper Ltd.

This paper describes research conducted under the BuMines's Advancing Metal and Nonmetal Mining Technology Program, a major element being the application of new and improved technology to shaft design in deep underground vein-type mines. Two basic design parameters considered in shaft planning are configuration (shape) and ground support. The most common shapes are circular and rectangular. Ground support systems include concrete, timber sets, steel sets, rock bolts, and steel liners. The inherent advantages and/or disadvantages of various shaft designs such as ventilation and fire resistance, flexibility and ground support characteristics are well known. Circular concrete-lined shafts have minimal resistance to air flora and are virtually fireproof, an important consideration in deep hot mines. However, concrete does not yield significantly, and failure conditions and misalignment cannot be easily repaired. Timber-supported rectangular shafts predominate in the Coons d'Alene Mining District with its highly stressed and frequently heavy ground. The sets can be relieved and reblocked when out of alignment. However, the constant maintenance and repair requirements result in exposure to an inherently dangerous working environment combined with excessive operating costs. Obviously a dilemma exists--a circular, concrete-lined opening has many desirable features, provided it is strong enough to withstand the stresses involved. Rectangular, timber supported shafts have proven adequate in the Coeur d'Alenes; however, the implication of increased maintenance and repair requirements on ever-deepening shafts in this district and other similar areas will be an important design consideration in the future. This paper, then, presents shaft-configuration and ground-support guidelines to help remove some of the uncertainty concerning the stresses to be encountered in typical deep vein mining areas.

In the deep vein mines of the Coeur d'Alene mining district, rock bursts are a potential hazard to the mine structure and underground personnel. Damage repair costs are estimated by one company to exceed $1 per ton of ore mined. The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the mining companies, has conducted research intermittently over the past 10 years to help reduce bursts. Onsite inspections of major rock bursts were conducted, and reports were submitted to mine management; these included the geology and geometry of the affected area. The paper discusses the development and improvement of microseismic and surface monitoring equipment. The underground microseismic network, when operated on a regular basis and the results plotted daily, is capable of detecting stress concentration in certain areas. The surface seismographs record rock bursts, blasts, earthquakes, etc., throughout the district and show approximate location, time, and relative intensity of the event.

"More will be expected from the mine or metallurgical plant electrical system in the late 70's and 80's in terms of energy conservation, reliability and fire prevention. Increased electrical loads 1•equired by larger arc furnaces, higher-horsepower motors for mine hoists and pollution control fans, and greater use of electrical heating will have to be supplied. Computers and sophisticated instruments will be used more extensively and have less tolerance for electrical fluctuations. More extensive control and monitoring systems will be required to increase production and minimize operating and maintenance costs. Changing energy costs will prompt design engineers to investigate in-plant generation, particularly where sites are remote from existing utilities lines or steam from turbines may be used in the process. Some utilities are requiring industries to increase their power factor to above 90% ; others are requiring stricter control of voltage flicker from arc furnaces and harmonics from rectifiers. There is a trend to AC with solid-state cont1•ols instead of DC for large cranes."

INTRODUCTION The Japanese dependency for mineral raw materials from foreign sources increased rapidly within the 20 years since the Korean war. During this 20 year period Japan has attempted to industrialize and develop her economy while depending mostly on heavy import of nearly all kinds of mineral raw materials. She has fabricated them using energy generated mostly by mineral fuel that are also imported. Fabricated goods are either used domestically to accelerate more fabrication industry or exported after adding more refinement or fabrication. In this paper iron ore as a major raw material for the Iron and Steel industry, three major base metals, copper, zinc and lead, and petroleum as a major energy source have been selected as examples to represent the general features of various kinds of mineral raw materials that are imported. Among other important mineral commodities for which Japan dependa upon foreign sources are: Aluminium, nickel and cobalt, potash and phosphorous 100 percent dependent and tin, tungusten, chromium and molybdenum over 95 percent dependent. IRON ORE Statistics for the important iron and steel raw materials, namely iron ore, coal and scrap iron are shown in Tables 1, 2 and Fig. 1. Iron ore is by far the most important and basic among these three commodities. There has been practically no steel or iron imported as a metal into Japan during this period. Iron ore, including aggregate such as pellets, and metallurgical coal are mostly transported in large ore cargo boats to the port where very efficient port facilities unload them directly at the steel mill site. One of the responsibilities of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works is to provide a sewerage system for the metropolis of Melbourne which now contains over 2.5 million people. In providing this sewerage system it was necessary for the Board to embark on a large tunnelling programme some 20 years ago. As a result of this extensive tunnel construction programme, tunnel boring machines and shaft sinking methods have been developed to cope with the soft ground and soft to medium rock found in the southern and eastern areas of Melbourne where the majority of the recent tunnelling has been carried out. While in the last few years radical changes in construction methods have not been made, development has continued and improvements have been made, which have enabled the Board to extend the limits of the ground conditions in which it can efficiently construct shafts and also tunnels with boring Machines.
