Introduction It is thirty-odd years since I first entered the mining field by working underground at Anyox, which makes 1t clear that I can qualify as one of the older generation and claim the privilege of dealing in generalities and broad impressions. In this position I find it interesting to re~ view the salient changes that have taken place during the past quarter-century and indulge in some speculations concerning the future, with the hope that my comments may be of value to others engaged in the field of mining geology. As indicated by the title, the treatment is a perspective from a single viewpoint rather than an attempt to give a complete and impartial analysis. This plan, while deficient in some respects, has the advantage of being more specific than one based on .a. compilation of opinions. An additional advantage is brevity, which would be difficult to obtain on a subject of this scope if it were viewed from all angles. In conformity with the general plan, specific references to the literature have been avoided as much as possible, although a number of publications of general nature are listed at the end of the paper. This procedure is intended to give credit to the sources used without making them in any way responsible for the interpretation. The starting point for the discussion is the situation as it existed twenty-five years ago, when, as a recent graduate, I first had a fairly complete picture of it. However there is one impression of an earlier; stage that seems worth mentioning. In one of my first courses in geology the statement was made that some of the leading authorities of the previous generation, who guided geological thought at about the beginning of the century, were inclined to question the value of an association with mining. This attitude was no doubt exceptional, and certainly it was not adopted by the students who laid the groundwork for mining geology in North America. But its existence even in a limited circle is significant m showing how far the application of geology has advanced as the result of the investigations started during the first part of this century.

To extend our knowledge of the flotation behavior of sulphide minerals, the response of the following minerals to ethyl xanthate as collector was studied by captive bubble and cylinder flotation tests: antimonite (Sb2S3), arsenopyrite (FeAsS), covellite (CuS), rnarcasite (FeS2), orpiment (As&.), pyrrhotite (FeS) and tetrahedrite (4CU2S, Sb2S3). Lollingite (FeAs2) was also exarnined to determine if its behavior could be correlated with that of pyrite or rnarcasite (FeS2. Experimental Method Mineral for Flolation and Contact Tests Mineral was prepared in the manner a1ready described1 and its behavior both freshly ground and "oxidized" was studied. Tests in which the mineral was allowed to oxidize for various periods showed that a uniform response to xanthate was reached in two days or less. Oxidation Products The soluble oxidation products from most of the above minerals were measured and their effect on the flotation of the mineral studied. The mineral samples were wet ground to minus-52 mesh and deslimed, and 20 g of this material placed in 200 ml of distilled water of a measured pH value, and CO2-free air bubbled through each suspension at a constant rate (about I bubble/sec) for 5 days. It has been shown1 that the size of the mineral is unimportant in the rate of formation , oxidation products and that probably the supply of oxygen to the mineral is the rate-determining step. At the end of 5 days the pH value of the 'supernatant liquid was measured again, the mineral filtered off and the soluble products determined. Methods for estimation of sulphur acids, ferrous and ferric iron and copper have already been described.l No satisfactory method was found for antimony. Arsenic was estimated as the arsenate.2 Flotation of "Unoxidized" Minerals with Ethyl Xanthate as Collector Fig I to 3, 4. 6, show the effect of alkali and cyanide as depressants for the minerals with 25 mg potassium ethyl xanthate per liter as collector at 35°C. Wark and Cox8 have shown that with ethyl xanthate as collector, galena, pyrite and chalcopyrite show a greater tolerance to cyanide and hydroxyl ions at room temperature than at 35°C Covellite (Fig I), marcasite (Fig 2) and pyrrhotite (Fig 3) behave similarly. The drill sampling and evaluation of the Piney River ilmenite property was carried out during the early part of 1944 by E. J. Longyear Co., using the company's standard core-drill outfits to complete 44 holes to an average depth of IIO ft., from which were collected 1100 samples. The Piney River ilmenite-apatite lode is 25 miles north of Lynchburg, in Nelson and Amherst Counties, Virginia (Fig. I). Its elevation is about 900 ft. above sea level and it lies in the old pre-Cambrian complex of crystalline rocks that make up the Piedmont physiographic province lying east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The terrain is gently rolling and well watered and is drained by the Piney and Tye Rivers, which are tributary to the James. Geology The Piney River ore body comprises the upper, weathered part of a tabular basic rock, which occurs in a large area of granite-gneiss. The section containing profitable ore is about 3000 ft. long. It is separated naturally by thinning, into northeastern and southwestern segments with widths of 300 and 100 ft. respectively. The dip averages 4.5° southeast but steepens locally (Figs. 2 and 3). The unaltered rock is an even, granular mixture of feldspar, ilmenite, and apatite, to which Watson1 gave the name Nelson-ite. The decomposed ore body, which is now being exploited by open cut, is a yellowish clay material in which black ilmenite and glassy apatite are the only conspicuous minerals. An economically important structural feature of the deposit is a banding of minerals coinciding with the dip and strike of the dike. This is more pronounced in the footwall of the northeastern part of the intrusive, where there is also a higher than average concentration of ilmenite. According to Watson,' the TiO2 content of the Nelsonites of this region ranges from 10 to 42 per cent, while P205 varies from 4 to 15 per cent. It is inexpedient at present to disclose exact metal content of the Piney River ore body; suffice it to say that the average tenor lies well within the extremes noted by Watson. Sampling Methods and Procedure During a preliminary inspection of the ore body, Longyear engineers surmised that because of its soft, clayey character, drill sampling would yield little core, therefore they made all possible preparations to procure accurate samples of the drill cuttings, or sludge. The first requisite in obtaining representative drill cuttings is to secure their full recovery. Only under certain conditions, and by employing a most careful and rigid sampling technique, is this pos sible. There must be no loss of the water circulating in the hole, and the velocity

THE mineral magnesite, formerly the source of nearly all magnesia, now shares this role with brucite, dolomite, and the world's natural and artificial brines. The mineral magnesite is the normal carbonate of magnesium, MgCO3, composed when pure of 47.6 pct MgO and 52.4 pct CO2. It is one of the calcite (CaCO3) group of rhombohedra1 car- bonates, which also includes dolomite, CaCO3.MgCO3, and siderite, FeCO3. Magnesite does not form an isomorphous series with calcite or dolomite; consequently, these lime-bearing carbonates commonly present in magnesite deposits are there only as mechanical mixtures. Magnesite and iron carbonates form a continuous isomorphous series and therefore are inseparable mechanically. The variety of magnesite known as breunnerite is an isomorphous mixture of iron and magnesium carbonates. Magnesite may be either crystalline or amorphous (cryptocrystalline). The former, which includes breunnerite, is often termed spathic magnesite. Crystalline magnesite varies from finely to coarsely crystal- line in texture and has a hardness of 3.5 to 4. The color is white, yellowish, blue-gray to drab, red, pink, black, or mottled. It is seldom found pure but usually contains variable amounts of iron, lime, silica, and sometimes manganese. The color cannot be used as an index of purity. The cryptocrystalline variety is perhaps the more common type but the crystalline variety usually occurs in larger deposits. The amorphous type is fine grained and compact, showing no cleavage. It is usually snow white but sometimes is light to pale orange yellow or buff, owing to impurities. The fracture is conchoidal to uneven and the hardness 3.5 to 5. Silica may be present as inclusions of serpentine, quartz, chalcedony, or other minerals. The lime and iron contents are usually low. In general, amorphous magnesite is somewhat purer than the crystalline variety. The specific gravity of cryptocrystalline magnesite is 2.90 to 3.00. Abstract The Allard Lake ilmenite deposits, which are currently being developed on a large scale, occur as a series of dykes or lenticular, flat-lying bodies within the northeastern part of a large, oval shaped anorthosire mass of Precarnbrian age which lies with its long axis paralleling the gulf of St. Lawrence. The Lac Tio deposit, discovered by Kennco Explorations, Limited, in 1946, is the largest body of titanium ore of its type now known in the world. It contains upwards of 112,000,000 short tons of ilmenite ore averaging 32 per cent TiO2 and 36 per cent Fe. The ore is an aggregate of ilmenite with oriented microscopic blades of hematite. The deposits appear to be high temperature, late magmatic injections containing only a small amount of volatiles, and bear a genetic relationship to the anorthosite rocks in which they occur. * * * Introduction Recent developments on the ilmenite deposits in the Allard Lake district of Quebec indicate the probability of a major industry, and one which may make Canada the world's greatest producer of titanium pigments and, ultimately, of titanium metal. The presence of ilmenite in this district was first reported by the Quebec Department of Mines following a reconnaissance shore-line geological survey in the year 1941. The ensuing report by Retty describes the occurrence of a number of small ilmenite lenses about the shore of Allard lake and' along two smaller lakes in the vicinity. These showings were later staked by Toronto and Montreal interests who carried out a certain amount of development work, and were described in more detail by Longley for the Quebec Department of Mines. The claim groups were later optioned by Kennco Explorations, Limited, Canadian subsidiary of Kennecott Copper. None of the deposits in themselves constituted a sufficiently large body of ore to warrant the major construction expenditures necessary for their exploitation on a profitable basis. The surrounding anorthosite areas, however, were considered favourable for the possible occurrence of other ilmenite deposits

A preliminary examination of the Dayton iron deposit was made in 1941 and 1942 by Paul E. Pesonen and O. H. Metzger, engineers of the Bureau of Nines. Trenching and sampling were recommended, to be followed by core drilling if favorable results were obtained. The Bureau of Mines conducted a project at the property from June to December 1942. The deposit is in sec. 6, T. 17 N., R. 23 E.; sec. 31, T. 18 N., R. 23 E.; sec. 36, T. 18 N., R. 22 E.; and sec. 1, T. 17 N., R. 22 E., M. D. B. & M., about 15 miles west of Lahontan Reservoir in Lyon and Storey Counties, Nev. It lies at an altitude of about 4,500 feet north of the Carson Plains, in the foothill section of mountains that rise to about 7,000 feet to the north of the property. The deposit may be reached by driving 12.5 miles northeast of Dayton over U. S. Highway 50, thence northerly 2.7 miles over a dirt road to the property. The climate is hot and dry in summer, with occasional thunderstorms some of cloudburst variety, and frequent high winds. Winters are usually moderate, with light snowfall and some subfreezing temperature.

The purpose of this paper is to present a method of designing safe and economical arch structures that are to be constructed of concrete or directly of original earth materials. The experimental data used to illustrate the design method are taken from Bucky and Fen tress,1,2 and the application of the ideas presented by them is extended by obtaining an additional set of curves from which arch structures may be designed. This design method is based upon the following principles of similitude: A scalar model made of the same material as that of the full sized structure will behave similarly to its prototype if the density of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear scale is decreased. Let R represent the scale or model ratio, namely, the ratio of a prototype linear dimension to the corresponding model linear dimension. The effect of increased density may be obtained by rotating the model in a centrifuge at a speed such that the centrifugal held exerts on the model an accelerative force R times the accelerative force of gravity. Under these conditions; (I) model unit stresses are equal to corresponding prototype unit stresses, (2) the ratio of the prototype deformation at a given point to the model deformation at a similar point is equal to the scale ratio, R, and (3) the model and the prototype will behave similarly within and beyond the elastic limits of strain. According to the above relations, such models can be used to solve the following problems: I. The dimensions of the most economical safe arch structure for a given load. 2. The miaximum safe roof span underground for given geologic conditions. The procedure is described briefly as follows. Tests are made by rotating in a centrifuge a number of models that repiesent a variety of prototype loads and dimensions. From the experimental data, curves are plotted to show the relations between these loads and dimensions. The curves are used to solve directly the problems stated above. Structural design is based upon the working (safe) stress of the material of construction, which is established by applying a factor of safety to the experimentally determined ultimate strength of the material. In conformity with this principle, each model is gradually loaded until failure occurs. A safety factor is then applied to the results. If a safety factor of 4 is used, a given model at failure represents a safe prototype, the linear dimensions of which are equal to one-fourth the model ratio at failure times the corresponding model dimensions. The safe model ratio is computed from the following formula: Safe R =(1/4)4p2n2r/g=p2n2r/g [I] in which: n = centrifuge revolutions per second at model failure; r = radius of rotation of the model in feet; g = 32.2 ft/sec2.

THE mineral graphite has been known for hundreds of years and was first used commercially as a coloring agent. Its true identity, however, was not recognized until the end of the eighteenth century and its commercial development did not become extensive until near the close of the nineteenth century. The common names for this mineral are graphite, plumbago, and black lead; others less frequently used are potelot, crayon noir, carbo mineralis, and kish. Graphite was named by Johann Gottlieb Werner in 1789 from the Greek word graphein, to write, and this name was applied primarily to the large crystalline, flake variety. Plumbago is a trade term used primarily for massive graphite as found in Ceylon. Black lead is also a trade term and, like plumbago, is based upon the idea that prevailed throughout the Middle Ages that graphite was a form of lead, or at least contained that metal. Graphite is a soft, black, unctuous form of carbon that crystallizes in the hexagonal system with rhombohedra1 symmetry. It occurs occasionally in six-sided tabular crystals but usually is found in foliated masses, minute disseminated scales, or earthy lumps. It has perfect basal cleavage, is gray to black, has a metallic luster and a gray streak. The specific gravity is 2.1 and hardness is 1 to 2. It is opaque even in finest particles; extremely resistant to the action of acid or heat; and a good conductor of both heat and electricity. Graphite may be separated into three classes: ( ) natural, (2) manufactured (which is sometime called artificial), and (3) colloidal. Natural graphite is divided into two classes, "crystalline" and "amorphous." Crystalline graphite may occur as flake, lump, chip or dust. Amorphous graphite is a commercial term only, as all graphite is crystalline, but grades in which the individual grains cannot be distinguished are classified by the trade as amorphous. Natural mixtures of crystalline and amorphous occur in all proportions. The term "artificial graphite" is a misnomer; "manufactured graphite" is a better term, because it actually is pure crystalline graphite,

"The Red Rose Mine is in the Rocher Deboule Range, 8 miles south of Hazelton. The mill camp (elevation 4,000 feet) is on Red Rose Creek, 11 miles by road from Skeena Crossing. The mine camp is one mile northeast and 1,600 feet above the mill camp on a spur of Red Rose Peak.The Red Rose mine was described in the Jubilee Volume, Structural Geology of Canadian Ore Deposits (Davis, pp. 129-131), but regional geology and mine development have progressed to a stage at which a more complete description is possible.The property was first located in 1912, and for the next 7 years was prospected actively for gold and copper on the southern extension of the Red Rose shear. Scheelite was first discovered in the vein in the northern part of the shear in 1923. The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited optioned the property in 1939, and after a drilling program in 1940 the present mine development was initiated in the vein in the northern part of the shear. A 75-ton-per-day mill started operating early in 1942 and continued until 1943. The property was inactive until 195 l, when Western Tungsten Copper Mines Limited leased the property from The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. A mill, which later was enlarged to 140 tons per day, started operations at the end of 1951. The mine and mill were closed in December, 1954.The mine has twelve levels and sub1evels, and most of the workings are in the plane of the vein (see Figure 2a). The level interval is not constant, but between the lower four levels is 87 feet (100 feet in the plane of the vein). Access is provided by four adits; the 800 (elevation 5,659 feet), 600 (5,920 feet), 300 (6, 133 feet) and 200 levels (6,237 feet). The 600 level is the main haulage, and from it the ore is transported to the mill by aerial tram. From this level an inclined shaft extends in the vein to the lowest level (I, 100)."

Idarado Mining Company's mill and surface plant are at the portal of the Treasury tunnel at elevation 10,625 ft, 12 miles south of Ouray, Colo. In 1943 and 1944 this tunnel was extended in a westerly direction to tap the Black Bear vein, and, together with the recently completed 1100-ft inclined Treasury raise, provides access to the Black Bear mine. In 1945 a 250-ton mill was placed in operation to process development ores containing much needed copper, lead and zinc for war requirements, and to serve as a pilot testing unit for larger scale milling operations. In the years 1902 to 1927 some 329,000 tons of ore were produced from mine workings on the Black Bear vein that extended downward from elevation I2,325 ft at the Black Bear tunnel portal to elevation 11,618 ft, the lowest level of the mine. The ores were taken to the Cascade and Smuggler-Union mills near Telluride over two aerial tramways. Gold bullion, a copper-lead concentrate, and a zinc concentrate were produced. Ores The Black Bear is a compound fissure vein that has undergone several stages of mineralization. The first important stage is represented by complex ores of copper. lead and zinc in a quartz gangue. Precious metal content in this stage is low. The galenn is argentiferous and varying amounts of tetrahedrite, freibergite and bornite tend to increase the normal copper content represented in chalcopyrite. The zinc occurs as a true sphalerite with little or no iron. Later re-openings of the fissure took place more or less co-extensively with the successive introduction of (I) abundant quartz gangue containing minor amounts of chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; (2) free gold in a fluoritic quartz gangue; and (3) barren, low-grade quartz with minor amounts of pyrite as the only important sulphide. The sulphides show practically no oxidation and little mineralogic inter-growth. Because of the common overlapping of these successive stages of mineralization within a given mining area, considerable dilution of the base-metal content takes place, thus lowering the average mill-head grade. Plant Practice Metallurgical testing was started shortly after the Black Bear vein was encountered on Treasury tunnel level in 1944. Laboratory tests showed good flotability of the minerals in the ore and indicated an economic separation could be made of the copper, lead and zinc minerals into their respective concentrates. The success of the separation is close reagent control to maintain a balance between promotion and depression of the sulphides. To maintain this balance reagent consumption for the three metal separation is considerably higher than in ordinary lead-zinc flotation.

It also causes a serious increase in the normal wear and deterioration of all equipment with which it comes in contact. It is important to the consumer if it increases his as-received moisture. No attempt will be made in this paper to cover the entire subject of water-spraying of coal for dust control. It will be confined to discussion and data on (I) percentages of dust in bituminous coals, (2) moisture increases due to spraying for dust control in mines or plants by methods which have proved satisfactory for periods of one to five or more years, and (3) a few suggestions for research. Size and Percentage or Coal Dust The U. S. Bureau of Mines1 classifies as coal dust all bituminous coal passing a 20-mesh sieve (0.0328 in. square opening). The percentage of such dust to be found in ROM coal, of course, varies widely with the characteristics of the seam, and with the methods used in the mining and in the preparation of the coal. ROM screen analyses of 12 U. S. coals selected at random from personal files given in Table I show: A few other screen analyses examined indicating 40 pct or more of 20-mesh X 0 dust in 3/8 in. X 0 sizes were not included because of uncertainty that they were representative. The number of results in Table I is not sufficient to give a reliable estimate of the average, or of the range to be expected, but it indicates that in every case the coal dust is a relatively large percentage of the total ROM coal, and, of course, a progressively larger percentage of resultants as the larger sizes are separated for marketing.

THE major use for quartz crystal is in the manufacture of radio oscillator plates and telephone resonator and filter crystals. Quartz crystal is also cut and polished as a semiprecious gem stone, particularly in the colored varieties (amethyst, Brazilian topaz, and others), and often is carved into various objects of art. Prisms, wedges, lenses and other optical parts often are made of quartz crystal, usually for special- purpose instruments. Chips and small clear crystals below 100 grams in weight, called “lascas” by the trade, are the raw material for fused quartz products. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The Greeks believed quartz to be permanently frozen water and therefore called it krustallos, which, literally translated, means clear ice; but ages before their civilization, prehistoric man had crudely cut and polished crystals for rough charms and ornaments. About 2000 B.C., the Egyptians brought the art of cutting quartz to a high level. While there are earlier examples of crystal art that have great value, working in crystal during that period became a means of artistic and religious expression that has endured through the ages. Art museums and private collections throughout the world contain many priceless pieces. They include findings from the tombs of the earliest Egyptian rulers, as well as magnificent art objects in both clear and colored crystal encrusted with silver, gold, enamel, and precious gems of oriental and European workmanship. Pierre Curie first measured the piezoelectric effect of quartz, in 188 1, by placing a weight on the surface of a quartz crystal and measuring the resulting electrical charge, which he found was proportional to the weight applied. The following year the inverse piezoelectric effect was proved by the Curies. By applying a voltage to a piece of quartz, a measurable physical displacement occurs. The first practical application of this effect was the construction of a bimorph unit to measure voltage by measuring the amount of the displacement of the end of the bimorph. "THE HARDY MINE of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited is located in Lot 9, Concession 1, Levack Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, 20 miles northwest of the city of Sudbury, and a mile west of the town of Levack. The ore deposit is one of the many nickel-copper sulphide bodies found on, or near, the lower contact of the well-known Sudbury norite-micropegmatite irruptive, and is one of a family of ore deposits which occur on the northwest rim of the irruptive.The property was acquired by purchase in 1935. In the same year a magnetometer survey along the footwall contact of the norite, which is covered by about 150 feet of glacial sands and clays, first indicated the location of the orebody. Drilling from 1935 to 1942 outlined the extent of the ore. Shaft sinking was commenced in the fall of 1951, and the mine is now approaching full production at a rate of about 300,000 tons per year.There are several major differences between the geology of the Levack area and the Falcon bridge area, which lies at the opposite extremity of the irruptive, 28 miles to the east. The purpose of this paper is to describe the essential features of the geology of the Levack area as seen in the Hardy mine, and to supplement the recent papers on other properties in the Sudbury area by Davidson (1), Lochhead (2), and Yates (3).General GeologyA recent review of the regional geology and an extensive bibliography of the Sudbury area can be found in the two papers by H.
