THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an abandoned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they penetrated the capping and encountered iron ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was discovered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint. GEOLOGY AND ORE The Sunrise district is in the Hartville uplift, an anticlinal area in which pre-Cambrian rocks similar to those of the Black Hills and the Laramie Mountains are brought to the surface. The lowest part of the pre-Cambrian series exposed is a great thickness of pink, crystalline, Huronian dolomites with thin unstratified beds of schist and quartzite. THE writer has carried on experimental work for several years with respect to the simultaneous dissolution of gold by cyanide and the adsorption of the dissolved gold on activated charcoal in ore pulps, followed by the recovery of the charcoal by flotation. The results of this experimental work have been sufficiently encouraging to suggest a new process based on the principle of simultaneous dissolution and adsorption of gold, applicable to certain ores and tailings that cannot be treated to advantage by countercurrent decantation or filtration. Applications for patents have been filed and The Dorr Company, Inc. has the exclusive right to license the use of the process. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a process, state its possible advantages and immediate field, and give some results obtained on a laboratory scale. EARLY EXPERIMENTAL WORK In the early stages of the experimental work attempts were made to precipitate soluble gold from cyanide solutions with zinc and aluminum in ore pulps followed by flotation of the precipitated gold, but since the results were not promising enough to continue with these precipitants attention was directed to carbon. The first experiments with carbon comprised the addition of cyanide and alkali to the ore pulp, the addition of carbon at or near the end of the dissolving period, and the recovery of the carbon by flotation. With this method of procedure the assumption was made that carbon functioned as a precipitant of gold from cyanide solutions and as such should be added as are other precipitants, including zinc and aluminum; namely, at the end of the dissolution period. The assumption was then made that carbon functioned as an adsorbent, and that if such assumption proved to be correct, it could be added with success to the ore pulp at the time of adding the cyanide. The first experiment along this line was successful in that the feasibility of the dissolution of gold by cyanide and the simultaneous extraction of the dissolved gold by carbon in ore pulps was demonstrated, at least with respect to such treatment on a laboratory scale.

THERE are a lot of good things about this great industry of ours. Let us stop commiserating and consider some of the things that are right in this business. Coal is number one in the basic material industries. Our civilization owes more to it than to any other basic commodity. We are literally immersed in the benefactions of coal. In cur man-made world it is indispensable and we are constantly surrounded by objects, materials, and services which owe their existence to coal. Practically all the important materials, such as iron, steel, brick, cement, lime, rubber, glass, cotton, and wood have felt its magic touch.

ITALY is by- far the poorest in mineral resources of the so-called great pou7ers of Europe. Before the World War this shortage was not so serious as the essential minerals that could not be mined domestically at a profit were bought in the world markets. In those days tourist trade and remittances from Italians abroad helped to provide Italy with foreign exchange. During the World War, when certain mineral products were scarce and when prices rose in some instances to several times normal, the Italian Government began to regulate consumption and imports. It was not until later, when the Fascist regime established the corporate state, that Italy seriously considered adopting a of self-sufficiency. Private industry was grouped under separate corporations, for the principal industries; including mining and metallurgy and the heads of the large producing companies, became members of these corporations. The major purpose of this bulletin, as indicated in the preface by Dr. John W. Finch, Director of the Bureau of Mines, is to give a critical review of the coal-mining methods used in the principal producing countries of Europe, to describe the reasons underlying the adoption of these methods, and to contrast them with coal-mining methods employed in the United States. The report includes discussions of various subjects intimately related to coal mining, such as geology of the principal coal fields; production and resources of the several countries; mine safety and health research; Government mining regulations; mine inspection and rescue procedure; safety lamps; fixed lighting methods under-ground; testing electric motors, mining machines, and mining explosives for permissibility; and special mining hazards, such as explosions of gas and coal dust, mine fires, instantaneous gas outbursts, ground movement and surface subsidence, and bumps. Commercial, economic, and labor problems of European coal mining, including miners' output, wages, and social-insurance schemes, as well as cost of mining, prices of coal, etc., are briefly described. It will be noted that data on most subjects are not given for Russia, which has become an important coal-producing country, owing to the lack of reliable published information concerning Russian coal mining.

During the initial development of Mount Isa Mines power was supplied from a temporary power plant situated near the Man & Supply Shaft. The main power plant was placed in service early in 1931 and then comprised two Babcock and Willcox boilers, fired by pulverised fuel, and two British General Electric Company's turbo-alternators of 5,000 kW. each. Both plants have been described by A. F. McAskill in the Journal of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.From 1931 power demand progressively increased due to greater production, further mine development in the harder sulphides increased pumping for mine drainage and additions to mill and smelter until, by 1935, the plant was inadequate for further output commensurate with a reasonable safety margin.Coincident with the added power demand, operating conditions involved a fuel problem which could not have been anticipated. The ash content of the fuel supplied gradually increased from 13% to 16-5%, while the melting point of the ash decreased with higher pyrite content.Temperature conditions in the furnace required careful control to cope with ash formation and slag accretions.Consequently brickwork, excessively stressed on water walls, was constantly under repair, and required suspension periods of 50% of operating time for cleaning and overhaul.Load conditions varied continually, therefore the high heat liberations in the furnace, necessary to accommodate peaks in fluctuating output, resulted in ash fusion.

UNLIKE most previous Howe lecturers, I had not the good fortune to be associated with Henry Marion Howe, nor to be directly one of his students. Yet, through his writings, he has been my teacher, as he has of all American metallurgists. Instructive as his writings are-I use the present tense because Howe thought so keenly and reasoned so surely, seeing clearly, as if by intuition, what was hazy to lesser minds, that his writings are still vital-it is not, those books and papers, nor even the minds he trained in his classes, that were his most outstanding service. It was the spirit of Howe in his: approach to the problems of metallurgy, his broad-mindedness and fair-ness, his recognition of the need for theories and hypotheses to explain metallurgical phenomena, his willingness to use them as servants, as well as his questioning attitude-his refusal to accept them as masters-that comprise his greatest service. This most thoroughly warrants the honor the Institute pays each year to his memory. These traits I so respect and honor in any man that I glory in this opportunity to do reverence to him in whom they were so notably united.

IN five years mineral wool has grown to a thirty-million-dollar industry from one whose output was valued, in 1933, at $1,700,000. Ten years ago, in 1928, there were only seven producing companies, with an annual output of but 50,000 tons. By 1936 fifty or more companies were producing half a million tons. The industry is still growing vigorously and will profit from the expected activity in building in 1339, for two-thirds of this material is used for building insulation and to assist in fire-retarding, in both new and old homes. It is as useful in the South, to protect against heat, as in the North, to keep out the cold, if one may speak nontechnically. It is a concomitant of air conditioning, that new addition to the American standard of living that began in theatres, department stores, and railroad dining cars, and is rapidly progressing down to small homes. Here, then, is an industry that is only beginning to have a present, and one with an almost certain important future; one that depends upon mining and the by-products of mining for all of its raw materials; one that every progressive mining man should know something about.

THE technical sessions at the Regional Meeting of the A.I.M.E. in San Francisco are to be de- voted LO changes, current or predictable, which may be expected to alter today's practices in mining and metallurgical engineering. Our present condition may be summarized as follows: Capacity to produce is excessive for domestic needs in molybdenum, copper, iron, and oil; sufficient in lead, zinc, and potash; deficient in aluminum, manganese, tungsten, chromium, and tin. Gold and silver are complicated by their use as money. Or, to look at it in another way, the "growth curles" of production, as C. K. Leith emphasizes, characteristically rise slowly at the beginning, show a second stage of rapid growth, and a third stage of leveling off. The third stage is already reached here in coal. copper, iron, lead, and zinc. But still in the second slage are oil, molybdenum, potash, and others.

PETROLEUM has come to be one of the most important and essential of the mineral re- sources of the nation. It is the most advantageous source of mineral fuels and of lubricants, and as such it has provided in large measure for the phenomenal development in our modern means of travel and in the facilities for transportation by land, sea, and air. Without it the remark- ably rapid industrial and social progress in our country during the past thirty years could not have occurred. In view of its important place and the fact that petroleum is irreplaceable and existent in limited quantities in nature, its conservation is essential.

AMONG the European nations Germany is the center of interest economically as well as politically, and of prime importance for Europe as a whole is Germany's capacity to produce mineral products for armament and for export in exchange for the import of the essential supplies to maintain its industries. So far as minerals are concerned, Germany is worse off than any other great power except Italy, and deficiencies are being met by attempts to increase output from local deposits and by greater use of substitutes derived from domestic raw materials to replace imported metals, petroleum products, and other minerals.

Howe's Discussion of a Creep Problem I have often wished that Howe were still with us to turn his keen insight upon the problems of the use of metals at high temperatures, a field much studied but still very hazy. Indeed, 53 years ago, in a paper1 before this Institute, Howe stated a problem closely allied to some that still perplex metallurgists and engineers dealing with the high-temperature field. Howe was intrigued by a report2 from another old master, Robert Henry Thurston, on the behavior of annealed vs. cold-drawn iron wire, and in order to broaden the foundation for metallurgical generalization, Howe made experiments of his own on copper and silver. "The agglomerating index of coal is an index based upon the nature of the coke residue left when the standard volatile-matter determination of the well-known proximate analysis is made. In this determination a small amount of coal is heated in a container to about 950° C. (1,742° F.), at which temperature the volatile matter is driven off, leaving a coke formation. The coke residues for various coals are quite different in physical structure: and, for some time past, work has been done on studies of the nature of these residues in connection with the coking of coal. In 1934 Gilmore, Connell, and Nicolls proposed use of the agglomerating index for indicating the dividing line between noncaking coals and those having weakly caking properties. 4/ Its use was adopted in the standard classification of coals by rank as a requisite physical property index to differentiate semianthracite from low-volatile bituminous coal and also high-volatile ""C"" bituminous from subbituminous ""A"" coal, as shown in table 1, the standard coal classification adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association. 5./In studying the agglomerating properties of coals based on the coke residue the Bureau of Mines has adopted the notation given in table 2. Coals that in the volatile-matter determination give a coke residue either in the form of an agglomerate button that will support a 500-gram weight without pulverizing or a button that shows swelling or cell structure are considered to be agglomerating."

"Previous investigation 4/ has demonstrated that some of the aliphatic amines are suitable absorbents for 302, This paper reports the results of physical studies of a number of such amines with the object of determining which is most favorable as an absorbent.Monoethanol amine, diethylene triamine, and triethylene tetramine appear to be the most promising of all the amines studied, and most of this report has been devoted to studies of the physical properties of their aqueous solutions, which contain varying amounts of SO2.PURITY OF MATERIALSAll of the amines used were of commercial grade, because the primary object of this research was the investigation of a proposed works process rather than the accumulation of scientific data.The aminoethyl derivitives of ethylene diamine, namely, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, and tetraethylene pentamine, only recently have been produced commercially. The chemistry of aliphatic amines is complex, and these newer derivitives have not been investigated, completely. Chemically pure material is not on the market, and since definite physical standards have not been published, one could not be assured of a pure product even if the commercial material was refined.The compilation of physical constants for the pure amines would involve much time—consuming effort without materially enhancing the value of this paper, as this work was not devoted to the development of fundamental standards."

"INTRODUCTION Early in 1936 the Interstate Oil Compact Commission and other groups interested in forecasts of demand for petroleum requested the Bureau of Mines to make a physical inventory of crude-oil stocks in the United States, Accordingly, the 74th Congress appropriated funds for conducting such a survey during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1937. In the discussions and hearing 2/ relative to the need for the survey, the opinion was expressed that crude oil held in storage for long periods had lost so much of its gasoline content that the economic significance of total stocks should be discounted materially. Therefore, a primary objective of the survey was to make a physical inventory of the crude oil held in storage above ground and to determine the quantities and characteristics of the light fractions contained in the various stocks."
