This is an attempt to bring together some of the knowledge of the coal-forming conditions obtaining during the Pennsylvanian period in the Western Interior Coal Province, to sketch briefly the present extent and character of the coals produced, and to show the beginning of correlation of beds over wide areas. Coals of later age than the Pennsylvanian are not included and, for reasons that will appear later, little attempt is made to cover the districts of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, and northern Texas is omitted entirely. Geological Conditions The conditions that made possible the formation of large coal beds in the United States were most favorable in the Pennsylvanian period, formerly known as the Upper Carboniferous. The geological conditions can be determined from the records, but not the reasons for them. Preceding the Pennsylvanian was the Mississippian, formerly known as the lower Carboniferous and still later as the sub-Carboniferous. During this time, large bodies of limestone were deposited and at the close of the Mississippian they were warped upward and for a long period were eroded. Then there began a period of subsidence, more or less interrupted at times, during which the Pennsylvanian strata were deposited (see table on next page). These consist of sandstones, limestones and shales, with occasional coal beds. At the beginning of the Pennsylvanian there was subsidence, which allowed the sea to extend over the eroded Mississippian surface to the north and east. It passed over eastern and central Texas, a large part of Oklahoma, with a projection into Arkansas, over Kansas and part of Nebraska, all the northern and western part of Missouri, a large part of Iowa except a strip in the north, most of Illinois, practically all of Kentucky, northern Tennessee, most of Indiana, all of the eastern part of Ohio, practically all of West Virginia, western Maryland, the west end of Virginia, and a large part of Pennsylvania. AS is well known, there are large and valuable deposits of coal in British Columbia, both on the mainland and on Vancouver island. These deposits are widely distributed over the Province. The chief sources of supply on the mainland are found in the Fernie and Princeton-Nicola districts and on Vancouver island in the Comox and Nanaimo districts. The coals range from a very high quality bituminous coal to lignite. On the Upper Skeena river there is said to be a very large deposit of anthracite or semi-anthracite, but this field has not been developed. Coal was first discovered in British Columbia on the north end of Vancouver island in the year 1835, but it was not until 1852 that coal mining was seriously undertaken by the Hudson's Bay Company at Nanaimo, where mining has been carried on continuously ever since that date. The production of coal in the Province continued to increase until the year 1910, when the annual output reached its peak at 3,100,000 tons and a total of 7,800 men were employed in the industry. Since 1910, the production has dropped steadily until, in 1934, only 1,347,000 tons of coal were produced and less than 3,000 men were employed. This continued decrease in production has in no way been caused by lack of coal reserves. It has been due entirely to curtailment of markets. I do not propose to discuss coal mining practice in British Columbia, where we have all sorts of mining conditions, including submarine mining. There is no lack of coal supplies for either industrial or domestic purposes, nor is there likely to be any shortage of coal in the Province for many generations. We have our mining troubles, which increase the cost of production, but there are no insuperable difficulties to prevent the extraction of a large and increasing supply of coal. Our main difficulty-in fact our only serious difficulty-is to find a market for our output, and we must consider means which can be evolved not only to conserve our existing markets but also to expand them, at any rate within the boundaries of Canada. I will therefore confine my remarks chiefly to the all-important factor of Markets for our coal.

Science attracts the attention and interest of an individual or an industry in general only in proportion to the apparent direct application to its immediate welfare or benefit. Engineering accomplishments, as aphlied science, therefore receive more recognition than the scientific discoveries on which they are based. Even self-evident truth needs endless repetition before recognition: engineering as applied science cannot advance beyond the science on which it is founded. Scientific research, and discovery, is sometimes forced by the limitations recognized by those active in its development for the use of society and industry and sometimes results from an apparently superficially illogical curiosity about natural phenomena. Research has received inadequate support except in industries born in the laboratory, the chemical and electrical industries, from which many lessons might well be drawn by their elder associates. The rapid growth of these industries has been largely due to close cooperation of scientists and engineers. Most rapid advance is made when the research worker and the engineer keep in close touch with each other's ideas and problems. Many of the developments of modern industry are based on discoveries buried for years in scientific journals because the "time was not ripe" at their discovery. The situation with regard to utilization of coal is quite the oppositre. The fundamental facts in regard to the scientific aspects of the problem of developing the energy from coal are scarcely known. The engineer, without much scientific cooperation, has accomplished much in increasing the number of kilowatt-hours per pound of coal from 0.31 in 1919 to 0.69 in 1934, in increasing the 1000 gross ton-miles of freight hauled from 12.2 to 16.4 per ton of coal in the same period, in fuel economy in production of coke, and in developing the production of motor fuel in Germany and England by hydrogenation of coal. This lack of scientific research on the utilization of our most important natural resource, coal, has been due undoubtedly in large part to the reluctance of investigators to study the interrelationships involved in the complicated processes in which coal is used. Tae purpose of this paper is to present types of charts adapted to aid in the graphic solution of fan-performance problems of selection and operation, and to urge the adoption of similar charts by the National Association of Fan Manufacturers as standard forms for presenting fan-performance data. As matters now stand, it is difficult for the average engineer to solve such problems because a laree number of variables are involved, and performance data are not presented in a manner that permits their direct application to many problems encountered in practice. The performance of any centrifugal machine is determined not only by the machine itself but also by the fluid-flow system on which it operates. Actual performance of centrifugal fans is therefore e matter of the type, size, and speed of fan, on the one hand, and of the relation of pressure to quantity of flow, as determined by the physical condition of the airway system, on the other.

THIS survey is one of the more recent tests of geophysical methods of prospecting by the Dominion Observatory and the Geological Survey of Canada, of which the purpose is to find out what application such methods may have to geological problems in Canada. The Malagash salt deposit lies on the north shore of Nova Scotia about 40 miles east of the New Brunswick boundary, and forms a part of faulted and folded Carboniferous strata. The salt beds are exposed only in the mine workings, which are about 1000 ft. deep and at one place extend for 1000 ft. along the strike. Lack of rock exposures, complicated folds, and faults make it impossible to predict the location of salt away from the mine. A survey of an area in the vicinity of the mine was therefore undertaken to find out whether the salt could be located by the torsion balance and whether its extension from the mine workings could be traced. As the gravitational effects at Malagash may be fairly typical of those at other concealed salt deposits in the Carboniferous rocks of the Maritime Provinces of Canada, the survey has a direct bearing on prospecting for other deposits. The survey was made in 1934 by A. H. Miller in collaboration with Dr. W. A. Bell, of the Geological Survey of Canada. Observations began on June 15 and were completed four months later, on Oct. 15. Definite gravitational effects including a lowering of gravity were observed over the deposit. The survey also disclosed one other area of low gravity east of the mine but whether this area is underlain by a large body of salt is not yet established.

THE spheroidal form of the temper carbon nodules in malleable cast iron and of the graphite mottles of "mottled" cast iron suggests that in both all the graphite in a given mottle or nodule grew from a single center of crystallization or nucleus. ? There is, however, a distinct metallo-graphic difference between the mottle and the nodule; the area of mother metal impoverished in combined carbon by the crystallization of graphite in a mottle is practically coextensive with the ramifications of the graphite, while the impoverished zone of metal corresponding to a given nodule is always larger, and usually much larger, than the approximately spherical mass of graphite crystals forming the nodules. Furthermore, the mottle probably is formed during freezing and the nodule almost always at a considerably lower temperature. Assuming that the nodules or mottles can be used as a measure of the existing nuclei (capable of germination) we propose to record certain observations as to the graphitizing reaction in the light of the number and habits of growth of these nuclei. The present authors, in cooperation with others1-7, have reported upon various cognate aspects of the problem. THE definite trend to stricter specifications with respect to hydraulic concrete has become increasingly manifest in the last six years or so; but it remained for the vast reclamation projects of the Bureau of Recla-mation of the Department of the Interior of the last few years to focus attention on this trend, and to demonstrate how thousands of tons of concrete-making aggregates can be produced continuously and auto-matically with a control of fineness comparable with that obtained with small samples in well equipped private and governmental laboratories. Pioneer work in this direction was done, to be sure, by private com-panies, notably the Kaiser Paving Co. of San Francisco, prior to the present vast public works program. Then in 1931 came the first great, aggregates-preparation plant of the Six Companies, Inc. to supply construction materials for Boulder Dam' in Nevada, and now, in 1936, the aggregates plant of the Mason-Walsh-Atkinson-Kier Co., general con-tractors on the Grand Coulee dam in Washington. At Boulder dam and to an even greater degree at Grand Coulee dam, sand production is recognized as probably the most important single element affecting the physical characteristics of the concrete. For in the construction of dams accurate grading of the fine aggregate has consider-able bearing on the attainment of a uniform and homogeneous concrete of a high degree of workability and placeability and, at the same time, combining high density and low cement content. Low cement content is of value not only from the standpoint of economy but also because the use of an unnecessarily rich concrete causes certain undesirable characteristics to develop. This paper will relate how at Grand Coulee dam methods that are more advanced than ever before are producing four sizes of gravel and a sand having a fineness modulus of 2.5-3.0. SINCE so many different curves have been published for the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum, it seems desirable to definitely establish the correct curve by two or more independent methods. The curve published in part I1 was based entirely upon X-ray measurements because the other methods employed at that time were not satisfactory. The present paper (the seventeenth of this series on high-purity aluminum alloys) describes the determination of the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum by the measurement of electrical resistivity at temperature and by microscopic examination. Since the publication of our part I in 1932, an investigation of the solubility relations in the aluminum-zinc system has been reported by Schmid and Wassermann2, who obtained their solubility results from lattice-parameter measurements on heat-treated and quenched speci-mens. The diagram that they published is shown in Fig. 1. In this investigation they also found by X-ray measurements that the parameter of the gamma phase changed continuously with zinc content and at such a rate that it would be identical with that of the beta phase at 60 atomic per cent zinc. It was concluded therefore that the beta and gamma phases, from the point of view of structural relationship, are one single phase. They also suggested a gap of immiscibility between 270° and 350° C. The complete boundary in this region could not be deter-mined satisfactorily by the method employed and therefore was not shown in their diagram.

THE Turner Valley gas-field, situated some thirty miles southwest of Calgary, Alberta, has been the topic of much discussion, particularly from a geological viewpoint. Several papers (1, 2, 3, 4, and 7) dealing with the structural and stratigraphical geology have already been published and are available for reference(l). In this article, the geological conditions will be treated only as they directly refer to the crude-oil prospects along the west flank of the anticline. HISTORY During the past twelve years, Turner Valley has been known mainly as a field which has produced a high-gravity naphtha from relatively large quantities of gas. For about ten years prior to the discovery of this naphtha-bearing gas, which is produced within the upper 450 feet of a dolomitic limestone of Carboniferous age, a minor production of light crude-oil was obtained from overlying sands of Cretaceous age. Up to June 1st of the present year, the field had produced 9,473,582 barrels of naphtha from approximately 829,000,000 M.c.f. of gas. For the past four years, the total daily production of 80 to 90 wells has averaged about 3,200 barrels of naphtha from 250,000 M.c.f. of gas. This is an average of 13 barrels per million cubic feet. The naphtha is extracted from the gas by ordinary gas-oil separators and absorption plants. After the naphtha has been recovered, about ten per cent of the gas is marketed for fuel to supply the cities of Calgary and lethbridge and intermediate cowns. The remaining ninety per cent is burned to the atmosphere, with the exception of some four to five million cubic feet per day which the Calgary Gas Company score in the depleted Bow Island gas-field.

During the past year considerable interest has been shown in cementing operations for shutting off bottom water, whipstocking, etc. A number of plug-back methods have been used, with various adaptations for special conditions, but those described in this paper are representative of the methods now in use. Conditioning the Well Various preliminary operations for improving the results from plug-back operations have been evolved. In one method, a nitroglycerin shot is discharged at the upper portion of the formation to be plugged off, the purpose being to make a wide place in the hole in order to give the cement a more secure anchor against thrust pressure of the water against the bottom of the cement plug after the well is again put on production. Another is intended to attain a similar result by under-reaming a wide place in the hole by means of a rotary wall scraper. In one well in which this device was used there was a water sand at the bottom of the well immediately below the cap rock above which the oil sand occurred. Before the plugging back operation, the water sand was underreamed in an attempt to get a square shoulder on the underside of the cap rock, in order to prevent the water from breaking in over the top of the cement plug after the well should be put on production, and also to get a more secure anchor for the cement plug against the thrust pressure of the water against it. As an aid in calculating the amount of cement required to fill a given amount of hole to be plugged back, a device has been developed for measuring and recording the irregularities and cavities in open holes, called an "open-hole recording caliper." If consists of a steel shell, 5 in. in diameter, which encloses a recording mechanism that receives impressions from four movable arms that make sliding contact with the wall of the hole. The arms operate a ratchet, which raises and lowers a recording stylus against a chart. Each arm registers its own radius. The device is run into a well on a steel measuring line. Many investigators have attempted to determine the true nature of the internal changes taking place during aging. Merica, Waltenberg and Scottlt were the first to propose a theory of age-hardening. They attributed the age-hardening of duralumin to the precipitation of minute particles of the compound CuA12. Later Zay Jeffries and R. S. Archer2 augmented the above theory by suggesting that the small CuAl2 particles acted as "keys" causing "slip interference." Many other investigators3 have devoted much time to the mechanism of age-hardening, some corroborating the "precipitation" and "slip interference" theory, others coming to different conclusions because of effects that to them seemed unexplainable by the early theories; e.g., the increase of electrical resistance upon aging, the fact that no change in lattice parameter could be detected during the early stages of aging even at elevated temperatures, and the fact that the density did not change as would be predicted. In 1932, Merica revised4 his earlier precipitation theory to take care of these presumably anomalous effects. This revised theory, the "knot" theory, assumes that substantial age-hardening occurs before actual precipitation of solute as discrete particles. The assumed mechanism is one of diffusion of solute atoms into groups forming distorted regions which act as "hard" spots and cause slip interference. These "knots" are assumed to have approximately the same lattice arrangement as the solvent. The anomalous behavior of lattice parameter, density, and electrical conductivity, require a modification of the simple precipitation-hardening theory, only if it is assumed that the precipitation of minute particles during aging has the same effects on these properties as the formation of large particles under equilibrium conditions. The need for a simple, very sensitive, and accurate method for the determination of benzene in blood and urine was evident throughout a recent study of chronic benzene (C6H6) poisoning conducted cooperatively by the United States Bureau of Mines, The Barrett Company, and the producers of benzene. A combustion method which will be described in a later publication, end a previously described5/ adaptation of Smyth's method were developed and used during that investigation. The adaptation of Smyth's method gave satisfactory results when dealing with exposure conditions that produced chronic poisoning in a comparatively few days, but it was time-consuming and lacked the accuracy necessary for a study of the absorption, distribution, and fate of benzene in the body during exposure to threshold concentrations of benzene vapor in air. The combustion procedure was satisfactory from the standpoint of sensitivity but was cumbersome, intricate, time-consuming, and required the use of special and somewhat expensive physical and. chemical apparatus. Following the termination of this study of chronic poisoning, possibilities for developing better methods occurred, and these have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines with the aid of Relief Works Division personnel. A microcolorimetric method for the determination of benzene in air has been described recently.6/ The present report deals with the adaptation of this new colorimetric method to the determination

Soft solders are used principally in the automotive, can-making, building construction and electrical industries, but their field of usefulness extends well beyond these principal users to a vast list of miscellaneous applications where metal joints are required. The most common soft solders and the only ones considered in this discussion are those composed of lead and tin, with or without various relatively small percentages of impurities or additions. A small amount of antimony is often purposely added. As an indication of the importance of these lead-tin solders, 8620 long tons of tin were consumed in 1934 in the United States for making new solder, and during most of 1935 from 900 to 1000 long tons often were used each month. In addition, many thousands of tons of secondary solder are recirculated annually. A great many factors influence the properties of joints made with soft solders. Fluxes and the fluxing procedure used to prepare the surfaces to be joined in order to give a true metal-to-metal contact are among the most important of these factors. The temperatures used, cleanliness of the work and general soldering technique have their effect, but when results are unsatisfactory they are usually attributed to the metallic solder itself and the raw materials from which it is made. Sometimes criticism of the solder is justified. The wrong composition may be chosen for a given job, impurities may be present that ruin certain desired qualities, or uniformity may be lacking. A solder may even be looked upon with suspicion because of its ancestry, regardless of its true composition and behavior. To clarify the effect of slight differences in composition as found in commercially refined solders, a comparison of properties of solders grouped according to their origin has been undertaken. This paper contains an account of some creep tests on electrolytic lead and some of its alloys. The stresses used in determining creep were 500, 350, and 200 lb. per sq.' in. The alloys contained silver, bismuth, tellurium, antimony and zinc respectively. All were castin vacuo, and tested "as rolled." Tests were done also on electrolytic lead which had been cast in air.The electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.The preparation and vacuum casting of this lead have been described in a previous paper in this series. The preparation of the alloys, and the air casting of the electrolytic lead, are described in the next section.EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE.Every effort was made to keep the vacuum-cast specimens from contact with the atmosphere throughout their history.The ingots were stored eIther in a vacuum desiccator or immersed in heavy oil. The creep specimens were coated with vaseline except during rolling, etching and photography, which involved exposure to the atmosphere for about 45 minutes all told.It is not claimed that vaseline is a perfect shield against the intrusion of atmospheric gases. Possibly during the months that some tests were in progress the gases diffused through the vaseline and gained a limited access to the lead.Nevertheless, the use of vaseline gave protection that brought the tests nearer the ideal at which the author aimed, *Research Fellow, Dept. of Metallurgy, University of Melbourne.
