It is well known that the oxide of beryllium was identified as a new "earth" in 17971 and the metal first isolated in 18272. The history of the many difficulties encountered by early investigators, the laboratory achievements of Lebeau3, Fichter4 and Oesterheld5, and the eventual development of methods for commercial production are well covered in the literature, particularly in the authoritative published work of Siemens and Halskes reviewing their comprehensive investigation of the element. Accordingly it has seemed desirable to restrict this paper to the properties and uses of beryllium and its alloys. PRopeRties of Beryllium A comprehensive summary of the available data on the properties of beryllium is given in " Gmelius Handbuch der Anorganischen Chemie7." The metal is steel gray in color. A fractured surface exhibits a bright luster, which does not appear to change with long exposure to air, probably because of a thin, transparent protective oxide coating. The specific gravity is approximately 1.8. Although there is no recorded actual determination of Young's modulus of elasticity, it has been estimateds, according to Fessenden's law, to be 30,000 kg. per sq. mm., or about 30 per cent higher than steel. Beryllium appears to have an electrical conductivity approximately 1/12 that of copper. The physical constants as available in the literature are given in Table 1. One of the outstanding properties of beryllium is its great affinity for oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and carbon. One gram of beryllium takes up 1.774 grams of oxygen and will liberate approximately 15.23 kilogram-calories in the combination. The metal apparently reacts with all known oxides at high temperatures; in fact, beryllium will alloy with thorium and zirconium if melted in crucibles of their oxides. The true physical properties of beryllium are still somewhat in doubt, since very small amounts of impurities appear to cause a large variation

The widespread use of toluene in industry and the importance of air analysis in industrial-hygiene surveys have created a need for a simple and accurate method for determining toluene vapor in air. Most of the methods used to determine small quantities of toluene in liquid or vapor form are based on the measurement of its physical properties. Methods based on fractional distillation, determination of specific gravity, use of the interferometer, use of the spectrograph, and sorption on solid sorbents with subsequent determination of gain in weight have been employed. Distillation and specific-gravity methods are not applicable to the small quantities of toluene found in the air, and use of the interferometer, spectrograph, and sorption methods either are not specific for toluene in the presence of other volatile substances or require expensive equipment.

There have been no major field developments during 1935. Operations have proceeded normally on the company's three producing fields, Masjid-i-Sulaiman, Haft Kel and Naft-i-Shah. The refinery at Kermanshah was commissioned in September, 1935, with a rated throughput capacity of 75,000 tons a year of topped crude to meet local requirements. Crude production from the Masjid-i-Sulaiman and Haft Kel fields is tabulated below: Masjid-i-Sulaiman Field.—The flowing lives of wells have been extended by (I) a process of acid treatment, thereby reducing the bottom-hole pressure differentials, and (2) by reducing the back-pressure. Optimum producing conditions for individual wells have been determined as a result of an experimental study of the amount of available energy in the reservoir crude and of energy losses in flowing wells. The return of surplus products to the reservoir has continued to be a satisfactory economic operation and the crude throughput capacity of the topping plant has been increased. The viscosity of residue returned to the reservoir is reduced before injection by regassing at 35 lb. per sq. in. absorption pressure with surplus gas. The pressure in the gas dome is falling at the low rate of one pound per annum. Haft Kel Field.—The delimitation of the main structure has proceeded; the oil-bearing area so far proved being about 50 square miles.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing and grinding methods, and costs at various clay-mining operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total production costs might not be advisable in some instances, yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to-this distinction between total and operating costs in order that no misunderstanding of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Dennison Sewer Pipe Co., Dennison, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

Both drilling and production of oil decreased in Rumania during 1935. The drilling totaled 1,042,041 ft. and production 61,973,938 bhl., being a decrease of 8.5 and 1.6 per cent, respectively. Wells completed during the year totaled 198, of which 168 were oil wells, compared with 238 and 215, respectively, of 1934. No important discovery was made during the year. The only new field found was Valea Calugareasca, where the Credit Minier completed a small well on the westward plunge of the anticline. Drilling higher on the structure will probably prove the field to be of greater importance than the results of the discovery well indicate. The only other developments of importance were the extension of the Bucsani field, the opening up of a new area on the northeast of the salt at Moreni by Credit Minier and a minor extension of the West Gura Ocnitei field. At Calinesti, on the cast extension of the Moreni field, exploration work continued and a gas well was completed, but oil in commercial quantities is yet to be found.

WE hear much in these days about "tailor-made" steels. Farseeing executives have sensed the demand for metals of improved and special properties, with those properties deliberately built into the steel in order to fit it for a particular use or group of uses. They have set their metal-lurgists at work to produce what the customer needs, even though the tonnage required may not, at least at first, be great. As the metal-lurgists bring out such metals, the products are advertised and the customer becomes increasingly conscious that he no longer has to take "ready-made" steel as the only thing available, whether it fits his needs or not, but that there are plenty of steelmakers ready to serve his specific needs with a tailor-made steel. Of course this is nothing new in the realm of rather highly alloyed steels to be heat-treated. The automotive industry demanded and got such steels long ago. Indeed, one could not design a modern car using only non-heat-treated carbon steel, since an engine of present horsepower would be so heavy that the gasoline required merely to lug the engine itself around would be absurd. Many different alloy steels and many different heat-treatments are required to produce the fine gradations of properties and the strength per unit weight that are needed in each particular part. Aircraft designers, of course, count a high strength-weight ratio in the materials used as Article I in their constitution, and they too, and in outstanding degree, require tailor-made alloys. Aircraft and automobiles may be considered as the tail coats and Tuxes of the metallurgical tailors. Nowadays there is also a demand for business suits, in the form of high-strength alloys to reduce dead load and so increase payload, all through the transportation industry. We hear most about weight-saving design and materials in respect to the railroads, with the spectacular new high-speed passenger trains and the prosaic freight car. The latter sounds especially sweet to steel-mill ears, because it means tonnage. While most of us think of these developments, and of the engineering acceptance of high-strength materials as "new," the fundamentals are of almost hoary antiquity. It is the widespread availability of a variety of materials and their general acceptance that are new.

[Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly in the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decease due to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the Kraft-paper industry, especially in Lie South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This demand is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorably situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and tile anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far re¬moved from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2SO4?10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to most consumer requirements. The waters of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of tae total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs. In marry instances the cost of getting even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery or production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible.]

ROCK wool, one of the most recent additions to the list of Canadian-made, insulating materials, is a soft, light, fibrous material consisting of interlaced, flexible, glassy fibres so exceedingly fine that, individually, they are almost invisible to the naked eye and will float in air. In the process of manufacture, a suitable rock, generally a self-fluxing argillaceous dolomite consisting of nearly equal proportions of acidic and basic constituents, is melted to a completely fluid state and then converted into fibres either by a blast of steam or air, or by a mechanical device. The increase within the past five years in the number of plants in the United States making rock wool and slag wool has been remarkable, especially in view of the depressed conditions prevailing 'with most industries during this period. In 1930, there were only 8 plants reporting production of .these materials, whereas at the present time there are 44 plants in the United States listed as making these products, and there are 3 plants in Canada. In 1929, the total sales of rock-wool products in the United States amounted to-$2,377,324. In 1934, according to the National Rock and Slag Wool Association, 26 member companies reported sales of $3,695,405, and in 1935 the sale's of 30 member companies had a value of $5,571,469. The establishment of the rock-wool industry in Canada followed the publication in 1931 of a report (1) by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, Ottawa, in which was set forth the results of field work and laboratory studies which indicated that large deposits of rock in the Niagara peninsula, hitherto regarded as valueless, were suitable for the making of rock wool. This report was supplemented in 1934 by another report (2), giving the results of further laboratory and commercial-scale tests on the rock from these particular deposits, which proved conclusively that rock wool of good quality could be made from the rock in question.

It is not the primary object of this paper to treat with the scheme of prospecting in detail, but it is considered that a brief description of the broad lines is necessary so that the significance of the points to be discussed later may be appreciated.The finding of payable gold reefs on the Bendigo field resolves itself into a two-fold problem, firstly the location of quartz bodies, and secondly the location of gold shoots in such bodies. The country rock of the field has been folded and faulted, and the occurrence of known reefs is associated with the fold axes and the faulting. The "lines" of the field are the anticlinal axes, and practically all known reefs are at or near centre country. Very little work has been done on the synclines, which may have some potential value.Quartz has been introduced along the fracture systems, and gives rise to the three main types of reef met with on the field, namely, the "back," which is similar to a bedded quartz reef and is formed along a bedding plane fault; the "saddle," which forms at the crest of the anticline and has the typical shape from which it takes its name; and "spurs," which are irregular masses of quartz, making off reefs of the first two types.As the fracturing throughout the field is widespread and fairly intense, the first problem, that of finqing quartz, is comparatively simple, and any regular system of blocking out the ground will be productive of quartz bodies.*Field Superintendent, Bendigo Mines Ltd. Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1935 approximated 20,000 bbl., an increase of about 5000 bbl. over 1934. The total production for the state is an estimate, since the only definite figures available are those for Scott and Morgan counties, where 12,377 bbl. were marketed during 1935, an increase of 4305 bbl. over the preceding year. The oil fields of Scott and Morgan counties are near the eastern margin of the Cumberland Plateau where Pennsylvanian sediments rest uncon-formably upon the Mississippian. Near Glenmary, in Scott County, the production is from the middle Mississippian, probably near the top of the St. Louis limestone. Accumulation is due to a low, east-west anticline which has been cut by a fault. This field is now 20 years old and only a few wells are pumped at present. Oil was Struck along Boone Camp Creek in Morgan County in 1924 and there has been small production since that time. The oil comes from the middle of the Fort Payne formation of lower Mississippian age at a depth of 1400 ft. Geologic work in the area has shown that a terrace and porosity conditions in the Fort Payne formation account for the accumulation. The production figures on a number of small producing wells in Clay and Overton counties are not available. As pointed out by Glenn1, the installation of small local skimming or topping plants in the fields has curtailed the shipment of crude oil out of the state and as a result it has been impossible to secure accurate production figures in these counties. The operators, in most cases, are reluctant to give information, and there is no state law requiring them to do so. Based upon information available to the writers, it is believed that between 7000 and 8000 bbl. is a fair estimate of the production in Clay and Overton counties during 1935. More than 500 wells have been drilled in Clay County, the majority of which were drilled east of Cumberland River. ALUMINUM alloys, in common with most other metallic alloys, exhibit slight density changes with variations in temper achieved by heat-treatment, which usually are the result of the variation with tem-perature of the solid solubility of the various alloy constituents in the solvent metal. Changes in density are, of course, most marked in conditions that exhibit the maximum variation in solid solubility of the constituents. In aluminum alloys these conditions usually prevail when alloys are quenched from just below the melting point and are subsequently reheated to some lower temperature. Since commercial heat-treatments may be of this type, the density changes, although small (of the order of 0.3 per cent which may be compared with the density change of about 1.5 per cent involved in the transformation, at ordinary temperatures, of gamma to alpha iron during the hardening of steel), may in some specific applications necessitate quantitative con-sideration. This phenomenon has been investigated extensively in the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America over a period of years. A number of investigators1-5 have observed and measured the density changes accompanying the heat-treatment of aluminum alloys. In general, these changes have not been directly translated to dimensional changes and their significance has been overlooked to some extent by the practical user of aluminum alloys. It is the purpose of this paper to consider some practical aspects of these density and dimensional changes. These density changes were given some consideration in 1917 in connection with the use of aluminum-alloy pistons for aircraft engines. It is well known that iron markedly improves the physical properties and casting characteristics of aluminum bronzes. The use of 1 to 4 per cent iron as the principal modifying addition has become common practice in many foundries melting aluminum bronzes. Although the beneficial effects of iron are unquestioned, there is some uncertainty regarding the structural changes caused by it in the basic copper-aluminum system. It is agreed that a new constituent appears in abundance when the iron content reaches 2 to 4 per cent. This constituent, which frequently occurs in shapes resembling clover leaves, is sometimes assumed to be an aluminum-iron intermetallic compound. If this were correct we might expect a change in the structural relationships of the matrix in the direction of decreased aluminum content. On the other hand, it has been reported that iron has a negligible effect in altering the fundamental relationships of copper-aluminum alloys1 Others2'3 have reported an additive coefficient. Apparently it will be necessary to know the equilibrium relationships between the phases of the copper-aluminum-iron alloy system to establish any such theory as fact. When this has been done it may very well be that a further revision in the structural relationships may be necessary to describe the changes to be expected in commercial cast alloys. It was with this latter problem before them that the authors attempted to determine the change in the copper-aluminum relations with respect to iron. [The purpose of this paper is to present type: of charts adapted to aid in the graphic solution of fan-performance problems of selection and operation, and to urge the adoption of similar charts by the National Association of Fan Manufactures as standard forms for presenting fan-performance data. As matters now stand, it is difficult for the average engineer to solve such problems because a large number of variables are involved, and performance data are not presented in a manner that permits their direct application to many problems encountered in practice. The performance of any centrifugal machine is determined not only by the machine itself but also by the fluid-flow system on which it operates. Actual performance of centrifugal fans is therefore a matter of the type, size, and speed of fan, on the one hand, anti of the relation of pressure to quantity of flow, as determined by the physical condition of the airway s: stem, on the other.]

A summary of oil and gas development in Ohio for 1935 must necessarily be brief. As attention of the state government to the oil and gas industry has never included the collection and compilation of statistics on production, either by producing sands, by counties, by fields, or for the state as a whole, such information as requested in Table 1 of this symposium is impossible to secure for this state. In the absence of production data chief attention must be directed to drilling activity for the year. Information such as can be compiled from various sources, including weekly drilling reports to operating companies and trade journals, is given in the following paragraphs with the realization that the data may not be complete in all its details. Drilling Activity by Fields Drilling activity during 1935 was similar to the preceding year in , that the major operating companies were generally content to drill lease-requirement and offset wells and in that comparatively little effort was made to discover new pools. A compilation of completions recorded in weekly reports to drilling companies and in trade journals show 1022 tests completed for the year in 53 counties of the state. Of this total number, 653 wells were commercial producers and 369 were classed as dry holes. Production was secured in 40 counties from formations ranging in depth to 5700 ft. and ranging in age from Middle Ordovician to upper Pennsyl-vanian. From the standpoint of new production for the year, the most important sands are the Clinton of Silurian age, the Berea of Mississippian age and the Shallow sands of Mississippian above the Berea and of Pennsylvanian age. Trenton Sand Field Production in the field of Trenton sand, which originally included parts of 15 counties in northwestern Ohio, is now on the decline. Seventy-three completions were reported in this field during 1935, of which 33.8 per cent were dry holes. Activity centered in Allen County with 12 completions, two of which were dry holes; in Hardin County with 11 producers; and in Wyandot County with 12 producers and 2 dry holes.

Twinned metal crystals are usually designated as either deformation twins or annealing twins. If twins are to be classified according to the treatment the metal has undergone just prior to the observation of the twins, there are two other possible groups: (1) solidification twins,† when observed in the as-solidified or as-cast condition, and (2) transformation twins,† when observed in a metal which has been cooled from above an allotropic transformation temperature. McKeehan has demonstrated that ferrite does, occasionally at least, contain twinned structures2. The twins, which he studied by optical methods, were obtained during the preparation of iron single crystals by very slow cooling through A3. He proved that the twin relation was actually that which previous investigators had predicted; namely, twinning along three planes of the form (112). Since McKeehan's discovery, little or no attention has been given to this transformation twinning of alpha iron, or to the possibility that it might occur at all speeds of cooling from above A3 instead of merely during the preparation of single crystals. McKeehan's twins were evidently regarded as interesting only in proving that a body-centered cubic metal could form twinned structures—at least under certain conditions. It is generally believed that iron seldom if ever forms annealing twins. Certainly the straight-line banding which is so abundant in annealed face-centered cubic metals is characteristically absent in iron annealed below A3. However, O'Neil13 has studied "twin-like" crystals in annealed alpha iron and concludes that the specimen he studied actually contailled a few annealing twins. Tamura4 as reported "twin-like" crystals both in wrought iron and mild steel; specimens of the latter were annealed above and below A3 and showed "twin-like" crystals after both kinds of treatments.

BRITISH Guiana, Great Britain's only South American colony, may be reached by very comfortable steamers, both from North America and Europe. The trip from North American Atlantic ports requires about 12 to 14 days; that from Europe about 18 to 20 days. A number of steamship lines, including Canadian, American, and Dutch, have regular sailings between North America and British Guiana, with calls en route at various interesting ports in the West Indies and northern South America. Moreover, several lines, including British, German, and French, have steamships operating regularly between Europe and the West Indies. Indeed, so popular have the West Indian voyages become in recent years that, during the winter months, special cruises in considerable number are organized for many vessels that ply in the trans-Atlantic service in the summer. A trip to British Guiana, therefore, has become a delightful experience. After visits at the various attractive Leeward and Windward islands and Trinidad, the approach to the low, flat, British Guiana coast, with its muddy coastal waters extending for many miles offshore, is somewhat of a contrast. Arrival in Guiana waters is signalled by the appearance of the modern high-power Demerara Light, located "on a shoal about twelve miles from the mouth of Demerara river. From this point, if the tide is right, a pilot takes the steamer across the bar, eight to ten miles offshore, and into Georgetown harbour. At high tide, the water above the bar ranges from 15 to 18 feet in depth, depending on whether it is neap tide or spring tide; at low tide, the corresponding depths are 9 to 11 feet. As the bar is of soft mud, however, it is usually possible for vessels to pass over it with a draught of about two feet in excess of that indicated by the tide tables. Upon nearing the shore, one sees first the Georgetown wireless towers, then the light-house and the tall chimneys of sugar mills and of various factories in Georgetown, and finally the palms and other tropical trees and the houses of Georgetown itself along the sea shore and the east bank of Demerara river. Extensive wharves operated by various exporting and importing companies stretch along the river bank and activity prevails in Georgetown harbour. The principal exports are sugar, rice, gold, diamonds, bauxite, balata, lumber, fruit and other tropical products. The imports are food-stuffs, wearing apparel, and manufactured materials of many kinds.

FULLY 60 per cent of the serious and fatal accidents in Maryland coal mines are due to falls of roof and side. Usually, the victim of the fall sustains a broken back, sometimes not only the vertebrae being fractured but the spinal cord also being severed. When the spinal cord has not been severed and yet the vertebrae have been broken or injured, it is often possible to rehabilitate the victim of the broken back. - Such accidents are classed as Permanent Total and the victim receives a certain compensation from the State Industrial Accident Commission; sometimes the amount is awarded in a lump sum, but usually it is paid weekly. When the amount allotted to the victim of such an accident has been expended, either in a lump sum or weekly payments, the victim of the accident is dependent on public charity. Some efforts have been made to physically rehabilitate the victims and make them at least partly self-supporting before the expiration of their compensation payments. The State Industrial Accident Com-mission has done some of this rehabilitation. The Maryland Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with R. C. Thompson, Supervisor of Vocational Rehabilitation, State Department of Education, and his assistants, has, through an informal cooperative arrangement, placed several of the victims in hospitals in Baltimore for treatment. Six years ago, through the efforts of the Maryland Bureau of Mines, a dozen or more broken-back victims were examined by an orthopedic surgeon and report was made to the Bureau regarding such cases and the possibility of their rehabilitation. This paper details the result of such examinations.

There has been no noteworthy increase in production during 1935; but, on the other hand, there have been ample manifestations of a considerable increase in interest and activity in connection with petroleum prospecting. The Lakes Entrance field, in the State of Victoria, on the coast some 120 miles east of Melbourne, remains the only actual producer; and this production, consisting of lubricating stock devoid of light fractions, is very small in amount. Arrangements have been completed under which a series of "scout bores" for structure testing in the region of Lakes Entrance will be sunk by the Government of the State of Victoria, assisted by a subsidy from the Federal Government. Prospecting In the State of New South Wales, brilliant geological research in very difficult country, carried out by geologists of Oil Search Ltd., has revealed several previously unsuspected domal structures in the Sydney-Newcastle coal basin. These have been mapped in detail, and a test well is being sunk at Kulnura, 10 miles west of Wyong and 40 miles north of Sydney. At the date of writing this well has reached a depth of 1250 ft., 10-in. casing having been set at 1248 feet. Superficial formations consist of the Hawkesbury sandstone and Narrabeen beds of the Hawkes-bury system (fresh-water Triassic). It is anticipated that the upper coal measures of the Kamilaroi (Permo-Carboniferous) will be entered almost immediately. The objectives of the drilling are the upper and lower marine beds of the Kamilaroi system, which are regarded as promising as potential source—and reservoir—beds for oil. At Mulgoa, 30 miles west of Sydney, a bore is being sunk by the same company, Oil Search Ltd., to test for natural gas on a well defined structure located by the company's geologists.
