A corrosion-testing apparatus which operates in the field and which will determine the comparative resistance of various ferrous materials to corrosion by gaseous hydrogen sulfide at ordinary temperatures is described. The principle of the uniform method of testing is to allow natural gas containing hydrogen sulfide, direct from its source in the field, to flow over the group of specimens for a given period of time, and subsequently to estimate the corrosion sustained by each specimen by determining its loss in weight. The comparative results obtained when specimens of 47 representative ferrous materials of described typical composition \\ere tested at ordinary temperatures with natural gas containing hydrogen sulfide are given in tables showing average penetration of metal, Inches per year. The primary purpose of the work Mas to determine the possible utllity to the petroleum and natural gas industries of ferrous materials that are commercially available, and no attempt is made to discuss the results of the tests from the metallurgical standpoint. The following is a summary of the results obtained: 1. Steels containing 12 to 27 per cent of chromium showed the highest resistance to corrosion. The presence of nickel In these high-chromium steels did not affect their resistance. 2. Steels containing approximately 5 per cent of chromium showed comparatively high resistance, but somewhat less than that of the high-chromium steels.

The soda-ash method for eliminating arsenic from a molten copper bath has been described previously in some detail.' Briefly, the process consists in blowing powdered sodium carbonate under the surface of the partially oxidized melt and in removing the slag formed, which will contain a certain proportion of the arsenic formerly in the bath. Sodium carbonate melts readily at the temperature of molten copper, and when molten it dissolves arsenic oxide rather rapidly. In the process, sodium arsenate is formed which is removed along with the excess of molten soda ash. In order that arsenic may be eliminated in this way, it must first be oxidized to the pentavalent condition. This, however, is easily accomplished by blowing air into the molten copper until a fair excess of cuprous oxide is present. The manner in which soda ash is introduced into the furnace has a considerable effect upon the efficiency of the process. In the earliest attempts at arsenic removal, soda ash—often in combination with slaked lime, for sodium carbonate is not the only solvent that will remove arsenic—was thrown upon the surface of the bath, was allowed to melt, and was removed after it had dissolved a sufficient amount of arsenic. At present powdered soda ash is generally blown in under the surface of the melt with the aid of compressed air. Melting immediately as it comes into contact with the molten copper, it can react with considerably more of the bath than by the former method, and thus can remove arsenic more rapidly and more completely. Since the resulting slag is removed at once, its very destructive effect upon the furnace refractories is minimized. The effectiveness of the soda-ash method may be gathered from the results of the following test. A 900-lb. charge of copper was melted in a small, oil-fired reverberatory furnace, and sufficient metallic arsenic was added to the bath to bring the concentration of that element to about 0.5 per cent. Air was blown into the melt until its oxygen content was just under 1 per cent by weight. The bath was then sampled and soda ash was blown in under the surface in 5-lb. batches. After each addition

Some form of technical library is a necessity for every metallurgical plant, but its form and scope will vary with the conditions of each case. In its simplest form, it may consist of one or two mining journals and a few text books distributed amongst the staff. Again, it may be a separate establishment controlled by a clerk, the technical staff necessarily making its own research into the literature available. A still more elaborate organisation may be established both to supply information when requested and to keep the operating staff in touch with current matters of interest, and the library service of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia is of this character.The necessity for such a service is due to several facts. The Company's interests are scattered over three States. Most of its staff members are remote from: good public library facilities and they have few opportunities for exchanging ideas verbally with other metallurgists and engineers. Then, too, the process of recovering zinc by electrolysis, is a young art of which the physical and chemical bases were far from fully known at the time the: Risdon plant was established. Most of the zinc produced is sold abroad, and this unsheltered industry can afford to miss no technical or economic development which may promote its efficiency. Add to these facts the geographical isolation of the Commonwealth and the case for an adequate library is complete.

It has long been recognized that there are considerable difficulties connected with the physical and chemical explanation of shoots of ore. The literature of Mining Geology has frequent references to this subject; but the reasons given for the actual location of primary ore-shoots have been very tentative. In practice, the geologist or miner depends to a great extent on sampling and assaying to determine the boundaries of profitable ore within the mineralized zone. An ore-shoot is a portion of a mineralized zone which has a sufficient concentration of valuable minerals to make it ore. Ore deposits have been classified according to many schemes. There are classifications based on morphology and on genesis. However, it is also possible to classify hypo-gene hydrothermal ore-bodies in terms of ore-shoots or vice versa. A.-Ore-deposits in which the whole of the mineralized zone is ore, which is the same as saying that the ore-shoot extends throughout the mineralized zone. An example of this type of deposit would be the pyritic mineralization of Rio Tinto. B.-The second type would comprise those deposits in which the ore-shoots bear some relation to the geological structure of the area: all deposits in which 'bonanzas' occur in folds in the zone, at the intersection of veins along certain fault (or joint) features and other such controls. There are a great many examples of this type: (a) The Rhodesian copper lodes, where Bancroft and Gray have pointed out the association of the shoots of ore with drag folds. (b) A similar association has been pointed out by Faribault for some of the gold veins of Nova Scotia, e.g., Mount Uniacke. (c) The great bonanza of the Comstock lode in Nevada. C.-Deposits in which the localization of ore has been effected by the chemical character of the wall-rock. Examples of this type are the Fahlbands of Scandinavia, and the 'indicator' deposits of Ballarat, Australia. D.-Lastly, deposits in which there is apparently no structural and no chemical control.

The subject of reservoir energy and its efficient utilization has been well explored in many papers. The present effort, therefore, is limited to a summary of existing information combined with an emphasis of the probability that the relative importance of controlling factors will change with advancing knowledge. Consequently the necessity for flexibility in laws and regulations, inherent in the problem, is emphasized. Definitions Many terms have been widely used in the literature without having been specifically defined. For example, confusion exists in the use of ((reservoir energy" and "gas energy." The latter is much more limited in meaning than the former. Other terms have been variously used. Consequently, I shall preface my remarks with definitions of a few of the more pertinent terms. Reservoir energy is that force or forces, active or potential, that is native to the reservoir and has the power to move oil through the reservoir rock. The energy may result from expanding gas, from hydrostatic head, from the weight of overburden, or from any other source. Gas energy is the expansive power of gas when pressure is reduced. It is one type of reservoir energy. An oil reservoir is that part of a geologic formation or formations in which oil occurs in commercial quantities wholly surrounded by nonproductive rock. The essence of this definition is effective separation rather than remoteness and under it oil reservoirs may be superimposed in the same oil pool. Conservation of reservoir energy means primarily its maximum use in the production of oil. Unit operation is a plan of development and production, which embraces an entire oil reservoir under a unity of engineering control. It is distinct from unitization, which has to do with arrangements of organization and equities to make unit operation possible in areas of divided ownership.

SOME years ago, in the manufacture of seamless tubing from an alloy steel containing 0.07 per cent maximum carbon, 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel, at the plant of The Babcock & Wilcox Tube Co., a peculiar type of piercing defect was noticed. This defect was definitely associated with certain heats of the alloy and was independent of any of the variables of mill operation and billet-heating condition. A thorough analysis of the defective material yielded but one clue to the reason for its abnormal behavior in piercing and that was its oxygen content as determined by the vacuum fusion method. The oxygen content of the defective 18-8 alloy was found to be from two to three times that of the material that had pierced satisfactorily, and this incited an active interest in the vacuum fusion method for the analysis of alloy steels. After a critical survey of the literature on this subject, and considerable experimentation, an apparatus and technique were evolved that gave a fairly rapid, simple and reliable method of analysis. Samples selected from six years of tube production of 18-8 and other corrosion-resistant alloys were analyzed by this method. This paper describes the procedure and gives a correlation of the oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen contents of a number of alloy steel samples repre-sentative of good and bad tube-piercing quality.

The work to be described is part of a comprehensive research on the influence of impurities on the properties of lead. The author had previously compared an electrolytic lead containing less than 0.002% total impurities with a commercial lead containing 0.008% impurities (excluding oxygen) and had shown that the former recrystallised more readily than the latter under the same conditions of cold work and annealing. This difference in properties was attributed to the difference in purity. Electrolytic lead containing only 0.0005% total impurities has been prepared and cast in vacuo. Some interesting effects have been obtained by working and annealing this lead, and by adding silver to it. The preparation of this lead, and the effects obtained thereon, are described in this paper. James Douglas will long be remembered as a distinguished mining engineer and metallurgist, as a scientist with broad vision, as an executive whose understanding of practical problems coupled with his knowledge of men and affairs enabled him to weld together great mining interests and to their service build railroads and bring power. More, he will be recalled as a philosopher and a writer of charm, a historian of no mean order, and one whose catholic tastes and enthusiasms led him into the fields of education, medicine and theology. His aim was to possess that which he considered made life worth while—friends and effectiveness in whatever task he undertook. In this aim he was successful to a degree exceeded by few, as thousands of his friends and associates could and can testify. Dr. Douglas was born on November 4,1837, at Quebec, Canada. His father, James Douglas, Sr., was a prominent physician and the leading surgeon of Canada. He also established the first retreat for the insane in the Dominion, the Quebec Lunatic Asylum, to which he devoted his services for years; The son followed in the footsteps of his father and studied medicine, not only in Canada but also in Scotland and in Germany. He entered the University of Edinburgh in 1855 but after two years at that institution returned to Canada and was graduated from Queens university at Kingston, Ontario, .with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Later he went to Lava1 University, Quebec, and subsequently became professor of chemistry at Morrin College, Quebec. After he was graduated—at the time he considered his formal education completed—he traveled with his father in Europe and in the Orient; visiting Egypt, being especially interested in that country, several times. They gathered together an important archaeological collection which later was donated by them to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the city of New York. James Douglas was also greatly interested in photography, a hobby in which he made use of his chemical knowledge. The writer can remember distinctly the descriptions he gave more than forty years ago in Arizona of the difficulties he encountered with the old wet photographic plates, especially while traveling in Egypt, when he prepared and used his own chemicals. DURING colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still func-tioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned pros-pects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter.

To present some idea as to how the Bureau of Mines may most effectively serve mining, it is necessary that we make some resume of its pact accomplishments in order to determine what, if any, changes will be of greatest service to the industry and to the nation. There are a great many times in life when one begins to wonder whether or not Emerson, in his famous epigram about "mousetraps" and "beaten paths" and "final recognition of intrinsic worth", took into account the item of time. The intrinsic value of any movement, of any work, of any accomplishment will ultimately be recognized, of that there is no doubt, but may a man in history has gone to his end in martyrdom because the world was slow in the acknowledgement of the true excellence of his worth, and this is likewise true of institutions.

The investigations of large-grained specimens carried out by Polanyi and Schmid,l Sykes,2 Goucher,3 Yamaguchi,4 Gough, Cox, and Sopwith,5 Carpenter and Elam,6 Aston,7 and others have shown qualitatively that grain boundaries restrain the deformation of adjacent crystals. But whether or not the influence of the grain boundary is confined to the glide planes intersected by the boundary has not been demonstrated in any of these investigations, nor has there been carried out any quantitative analysis of the influence of a boundary on the deformation of a crystal. Indeed, the specimens employed in the previous work contained so many complicating factors that it would have been difficult to observe any variation of the extent of the influence of the grain boundaries in relation to their sizc. To gain knowledge of the actual accident hazards present in Kentucky coal mines, reports of fatalities during 1931, 1932, and 1933 have been analyzed and the pertinent factors included in tables, accompanied by some discussion and recommendations for the reduction of accidents from particular causes. Despite the large amount of study which has been devoted to the subject our present knowledge of the copper-oxygen system remains incomplete and unsatisfactory .in many respects. This applies particularly to those regions in which solid metallic copper exists. The primary object of the present paper is the contribution of new information relative to the solid solubility of oxygen (or cuprous oxide) in copper at atmospheric pressure, together with certain observations in the low-pressure regions of the system. It seems appropriate also to present a brief summary of the outstanding previous work on the constitution of mixtures of copper with its lowest oxide in order. to show the relation between the new facts and the system as a whole. The earliest recorded investigations of the copper-oxygen system are those of M. S. Lucas(l) $ and of M. Chevillot(2) in 1819 and 1820. Lucas believed that liquid copper is capable of dissolving its oxide, but neither he nor Chevillot was able to furnish convincing proof of this property. It was not until 1866 that T. Graham(3) definitely established the existence of such a solubility. Nine years later W. Hampe(4) measured its extent and roughly outlined the copper-rich portion of the system. The first really precise examination of the constitutional relationship between copper and cuprous oxide, however, was that of E. Heyn(5) who in 1900 published a temperature-concentration diagram covering the range from 0 to 10 per cent of cuprous oxide at atmospheric pressure. Within these limits of composition cuprous oxide was found to dissolve in liquid copper, forming at 3.4 to 3.5 per cent a eutectic which melted at 1065" C. R. E. Slade and F. D. Farrow(6) extended these studies to mixtures of higher oxygen content. They discovered that between 20 and 95 per cent of cuprous oxide the metal and oxide form two liquid phases at a monotectic reaction of 1195" C. The span of the biliquidal region diminishes slightly

This paper is one of a series of digests of foreign mining legislation and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the right of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the mining laws of British Honduras has been prepared from the best available information in Washington and is released subject to amplification or correction, if necessary, by United States foreign-service officers. INTRODUCTION The mining law governing all mineral substances other than oil is ordinance No. 7 of 1927 (Minerals Ordinance, 1927), passed by the Legislative Council on March 25, 1927. The accompanying regulations, No. 3 of 1932 (General Minerals Regulations, 1932), made under the authority of section 66 of the minerals ordinance, were made by the Governor in Council on December 23, 1931.

From 1895 to 1932, inclusive, 1,0163/ men were killed in and about New Mexico coal mines. Of these, 473 (approximately 47 percent) were killed in the 17 explosions listed in this paper. The second largest explosion of record in the United States, in so far as fatalities are concerned, occurred in New Mexico. The data in this circular were taken from publications of the United States Bureau of Mines and published annual reports of the State inspector of coal mines of New Mexico. The tables included are complete only with regard to major disasters. The Bureau of Mines considers as a major disaster one in which 5 or more men are killed. A few minor disasters are included, however.

THE fundamental mechanism of the deformation of zinc has been thoroughly described by several prominent investigators, particularly Mark, Polanyi, and Schmid,1 Mathewson and Phillips,2 and Schmid and Wasserman.3 The deformation of zinc occurs primarily through slip along basal planes {00. 1 }, and secondarily through twinning on pyramidal planes of the form { 10.2). In addition to these basic studies on single crystals, there have been a number of determinations4,5 of preferred orientations developed in rolled, polycrystalline zinc. In no case, to our knowledge, has there been described the development of oriented struc-tures in zinc as a result of a, systematic series of rolling treatments. The work included in the present paper shows the changes in orientation produced in a zinc alloy by successively increasing degrees of cold-rolling reduction. This alloy has the same crystal form, hexagonal close-packed, as zinc, but its susceptibility to hardening for a given degree of working is much greater because of its higher recrystal-lization temperature.

The purpose of this paper is to present a scientific method for determining the proper span and shape of roof for safe and economical mining; at present, these two vital factors wherever pillars are left to support the roof are determined by local practice or general experience. To develop the method described here, experimental laboratory work was done. The arch adopted was a segment of a circle, a flat roof being considered an arch with an infinite radius. Hitherto, arches have been used underground without the background of stress analysis that generally precedes arch construction on the surface. In many cases results have not been as expected, because of the lack of knowledge of the factors affecting its strength and behavior. A theoretical and experimental study of arches should furnish information that will make it possible to design safe and economical surface structures as well as underground openings. For example, on the subject of mine drifts and tunnels, the present idea is that arching their backs increases their strength; this paper will indicate that this is not always true, and if it can be shown that under certain conditions arching becomes unnecessary an economic saving will result. In room-and-pillar work a question may arise as to whether arching the roof and gobbing the excavated material will result in timber saving, and a decrease in the dangers from falls of roof. It is to be distinctly understood that each mine must be treated as an individual problem, and that answers to these questions and many others can now be found after experimental laboratory data have been obtained. Mine-Arch Structure Fig. 1 shows the elements that affect the strength or behavior of the experimental arch. They are the span, crown thickness, radius of curvature, rise and restraint.
