This paper is devoted chiefly to the coal-fields of the western part of the province of Chili and the eastern part of the province of Shansi; but the outline of this belt will give some idea of the extension of the coal-fields over northeastern China. This part of China is topographically divided into: (1) the mountainous peninsula of eastern Shantung; (2) the coastal plains, extending W. and SW. from the gulf of Pechili; and (3) the mountains and table-lands N. and W. of the coastal plains. The plains extend N. and W. from the gulf to within from 10 to 25 miles of the Great Wall, while their SW. extension covers western Shantung and reaches W. along the Yellow river almost to the southern boundary of Shansi. A line joining the mapped coal-fields, shown in Fig. 1, almost gives the western boundary of the plains; since these areas lie on the border of the plains—except the Tsê Chou field, which is on the table-land, 20 to 25 miles from that border. The coal-fields which have been mapped and investigated by the author are shown in Fig. 1. The one at and around Tongshan is known as the K'ai-p'ing coal-field; the one W. of Peking has been called the Wang-p'ing coal-basin; the one SW. of Pao-ting and N. of Chêng-ting may be called the Lingshan coal-field; and the one at and around Tsê Chou is known as the Tsê Chou coal-field. It has seemed to the writer that one important, and indeed sufficient reason, for our slow progress in learning the relation between the chemical composition and the physical properties of cast-iron, has been that the problem has not been attacked properly. It would be well to select the most probable working hypothesis which we can find, and proceed to test that hypothesis by comparison with observed facts, and by making new observations specially designed for such a test. Our first step, then, is to select the most probable working hypothesis ; and to attempt this selection, to state the hypothesis and its immediate corollaries, and to take some first steps toward testing it, is the object of the present paper. Its chief purpose is to bring the hypothesis to the attention of those who are more familiar with the evidence than the writer can pretend to be, and in a better position both to present new evidence and to discuss it. The hypothesis here selected is, that composition governs properties in the case of cast-iron, in the same general way and for the same reasons as in the case of steel, mutatis mutandis. This hypothesis, which of course makes no claim to originality, certainly seems reasonable and probable; its exposition and discussion are made easy by our existing knowledge of the constitution of normal or " carbon " steel; it therefore seems worthy of consideration.

This mine is situated upon the western slope of the Meadow Valley mountains, about 70 miles by road from the present end of the railroad-track, which is at Uvada, on the UtahNevada boundary. This boundary-line marks fairly well a certain change in type of scenery from western Utah to eastern Nevada,—from a region in which the desert valleys predominate over the mountain ranges to one in which they are in about equal proportion. The railroad from Salt Lake City runs somewhat W. of S., for the most part along the bottom of the ancient Lake Bonneville. The latter part of its present course follows the axis of the southern arm or bay of that lake, now known as the Escalante desert. An evident connection exists between chemical and calorific phenomena: the most important, of our sources of heat, the combustion of coal, is nothing else than a chemical reaction. Not satisfied with this indefinite statement, investigators have attempted to establish a more precise correlation between these two orders of phenomena, and have questioned whether there be not a necessary connection between the possibility of a chemical reaction and the algebraic sign of the quantity of heat which it would call into play (i.e., liberate or absorb). This question possesses the highest interest for metallurgical chemists. But the study of it by experimental methods only could not completely elucidate it. To arrive at a definite solution, it was necessary to appeal to a science much more general than chemistry,—namely, that of energetics, which embraces all the physical sciences. We can place absolute confidence in its conclusions, because they rest upon a proposition which can scarcely be denied, namely, the impossibility of The main facts in the history of the development o‡ this field of Triassic coals have been already set before the Institute in the papers of Mr. Oswald J. Heinrich, a former member of the Institute and the superintendent of the mines at Midlothian. † From these and other references to the field, it appears that coal was known to exist here as early as 1701; for on the 10th of May that year Colonel Byrd reported to the Colonial Council of Virginia the discovery of coal. Coal was mined from 1770 to 1780; but the amount shipped is unknown. It was much used in Richmond at this early date for gratefires. In 1789 shipments were made to northern ports. During the first half of the century just passed, mining operations attained in this field their greatest development, the number and extent of the collieries and the tonnage of coal raised per annum being greater for that period than for any similar period since. The maximum annual output exceeded 100,000 tons, while in two years only since the Civil War has the amount of coal raised exceeded 50,000 tons. This field covers about 150 sq. in. Its outline and the position of the strata in which the coal-outcrops occur are shown on the accompanying map, reproduced from the latest survey by the U. S. Geological Survey. Certain geological indications at Glady's station, four miles south of Beaumont, on the Sabine and East Texas railway (a branch of the Southern Pacific) induced me to undertake a thorough test of that locality by means of a well. I had been making reconnoissances for nearly two years in that part of Texas, before deciding upon this supreme effort. Three previous attempts had been made in the same place: one in 1894 by Messrs. Sharp & Co.; one in 1896 by Mr. J. Looney; and one in 1898 by Messrs. Savage Bros. They had all failed to pass though the immense thickness (500 ft.) of quicksand which underlies the surface soil, clay, etc. At first, I employed the system of boring which I had previously used in the Louisiana salt-deposits.* But I soon found that this method was inadequate, without modification, to deal with the quicksand. Accordingly, I adopted the use of large and heavy castings, and pipes of 12, 10, 8, 6 and 4 in. diameter, successively telescoped one into the other. Boring was begun by Messrs. Hamill Bros., of Corsicana, contractors, about the middle of October, 1900; and on January 10,1901, after many difficulties, a layer of rock containing marine shells was reached, at the depth of 1160 ft. For 150 ft. immediately above, the drill had passed through layers of sandstone and concretions of limestone. At this time there was about 600 ft. of 4-in. pipe, weighing at least 6 tons, in the well; and this, together with the next (6-in.) casing above, was filled with water. Under the above title it is desired to bring to the attention of assayers a short-cut method which has been perfected by Mr. A. S. Warren, of Buffalo, and the writer; has been used several years at three " Lake copper " refineries in occasional alternation with the regular " combination," or a wet and fire," assay; and has proved more rapid, and rather more accurate than the latter on all refined copper—namely, the direct cupellation of the silver chloride (+gold) precipitate, without scorification. No claim of priority is made for this direct method, as it has suggested itself to many others, and was mentioned by Mr. Warren in the symposium of assayers' results brought together in 1895 by the Secretary," after the plan and suggestions of Dr. A. This paper was originally prepared as a picture of the situation presented by the mining industry referred to at the end of the year 1899; and some of the descriptions and drawings of special mines, etc., may not completely show their condition a year later. The statements made as to the cost of mining and concentration, however, still hold good. The advantages of the tri-axial diagram in representing the composition of slags and silicates are well appreciated by many metallurgists. Prof. H. M. Howe* has pointed out the application of a fourth variable, in connection with the diagram, and has called attention to the usefulness of the general systern of tri-axial representation. In the discussion of Prof. Howe's paper, Mr. Firmstone† indicated how certain distances could be measured directly by projection. Prof. R. H. Thurston,‡ as early as 1877, had made use of a typtic model and of triangular diagrams, with contour-lines, rekrresenting varying physical properties corresponding to varying chemical composition. Still earlier, Prof. J. Willard Gibbs§ had used the diagram in similar work; and other scientists were thought by him to have preceded him in its use. During the period of nearly a quarter-century, following these early publications, there has been an ever-increasing use of graphic methods in numerous branches of scientific work, stimulated, in part, by the possibility of representation by three co-ordinates upon plane-surfaces. Yet the number of possible co-ordinates for graphic representation has always been, and always must be, insufficient to express many facts which are shown mathematically; while, without graphic representation, the involved nature of mathematical expression often fails to facilitate and promote research. The coming into use, therefore, of the fourth co-ordinate, permitting representation by four variables, marks but the beginning of some lines of research which could not well advance without this aid.

Rio Algom Mines Ltd. owns eight uranium mines and mills in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario, seven of which were producing before 1960. At present only one mine is operating and meeting current contract requirements. Under present economic conditions, it is not feasible to mine ore of less than 2.0 lb per ton U3O8, although there are very large reserves below this grade, Rio Algom is interested in preconcentration for three possible applications: to extend ore reserves by permitting use of lower grade ore, to reduce costs on processing of present grade ore, and to reduce capital investment in expanding production to meet future production goals. Rio Algom has been investigating various applicable preconcentration processes since the early 1950s to date, on laboratory and pilot-plant scale. Methods investigated include gravity concentration by sink-float, high intensity wet magnetic separation, flotation of uranium, flotation of acid consumers, and a number of electronic sorting methods including radiometric, photometric, and conductimetric. No method tested has yet been satisfactory under Rio Algom's criteria of uranium recovery and cost, principally because uranium loss has been too high for a useful weight rejection. Metallurgical results of the preconcentration test work and the economic assessment therefrom are reviewed.

Hunkered up against the spine of the Andes in a tight valley where natural refuge from avalanche hardly exists is the daring Rio Blanco project of Cerro Corp. The deposit here was found in 1904, but nature has foiled all previous attempts to open it. To an experienced mountaineer or a highway engineer with mountain experience, the avalanche hazard in the valley of the Blanco river would be immediately apparent. The collar shaft is at the head of the valley at an elevation of 3600 m and for 12 km down the valley there is no space on the floor for building very much; the dissected rock walls are roadways for avalanches and even a highway could not be maintained sufficiently passable. This is the proposition taken on by the Cerro Corp. Chilean National Decree #1699, passed on December 9, 1966, signified "Go" to the Compania Minera Andina, a company whose shares are held 70% by the Cerro Corp. and 30% by the government of Chile. The orebody, although only partially delineated, contains proven reserves of 120 million tons of ore averaging 1.58% Cu. When the operation comes on stream in the last quarter of 1970, it will be at the rate of 11,000 tpd. Annual production will be 65,000 tpy of recoverable copper in concentrates.

The Rio Tinto - Cerro Colorado operation was the first major cyanide plant built out of South Africa since the Carlin and Corte mills came on-stream in 1965 and 1969. Its flowsheet was presented in the original monograph, "Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice, " published in 1975, with a brief description of the plant but without the operating costs. The authors have recently received these data and it was believed worthwhile to present them in this volume along with the aforementioned flowsheet. The Cerro Colorado ore deposit is located at Minas de Rio Tinto in the province of Huelva, Spain, approximately 88 km (55 miles) north- west of Seville. The previously mined copper ore bodies lie on either side of the deposit which is mainly copper ore. The crest of the deposit is a capping of "gossan" containing hematite, limonite, gold, and silver. Separate facilities for primary crushing, concentration of copper ores and cyanidation of gold-silver ores are provided. Fine crushing is common to both ores. The run-of-mine open-pit ore is fed from a stockpile via a surge bin and apron feeder to a jaw crusher. After crushing to minus 150 mm (6 in. ), the ore is washed in a rotary scrubber to remove the clay material ahead of fine crushing. Minus 6 mm (1/4 in. ) screen undersize is pumped directly to the grinding circuit with the screen oversize being crushed to minus 19 mm (3/4 in. ) for feed to the primary ball mill; this is followed by two subsequent stages of ball mill grinding to 80% minus 43 microns (325 mesh). Grinding is with water only; no cyanide is used. After thickening, lime is added to the first two of seven Pachuca tanks for conditioning ahead of cyanide addition in each of the five remaining Pachuca tanks. This flowsheet indicates rapid cyanide consumption and the need to maintain a high strength cyanide solution for silver extraction. Agitation for dissolution of the gold and silver is followed by standard CCD practice employing four 67 m (220 ft) washing thickeners in series, with repulping between each thickener. A departure from American and Canadian practice is the use of Stellar filters developed in South Africa for pregnant solution clarification and recovery of zinc-gold-silver precipitates. The precipitate is treated with acid for zinc removal, the sludge filtered in presses, dried, calcined and smelted to produce dore bullion of 900 fineness containing 12% gold and 78% silver.

The ripper is not a new tool. In fact, it dates back as far as the Roman Empire. The Roman's ripper-mounted on wheels and shaped something like a plow-was pulled by oxen and was used to loosen the earth for the shovelers and basket carriers building the Appian Way. There are records of rippers being used in this country in railroad construction between 1860 and 1880. The tractor-mounted ripper, introduced a little over ten years ago, extended the capability of the ripper because of greatly improved maneuverability and the additional weight which could be brought to bear upon the ripper tooth. Increases through the last ten years in tractor weight and horsepower further increased ripper capability until now, in some geographic areas, hardly any rock is unchallenged by them.

Prior to World War I, zinc was universally made by the distillation process. Small plants were operated at Cockle Creek, N.S.W., and Port Pirie, S.A. Then the electrolytic process was developed at Great Falls, Mont., in 1915 and at Trail. B.C. encouraging the Broken Hill companies to investigate the process. England's war-time need for zinc gave impetus to the development, and the site at Risdon, Tasmania, coincided with the developing hydro-electric power there. Experimental work was begun in 1917 by a proprietary company formed and owned by Broken Hill interests. Then in 1920, the principal features of the process having been established, a public company. Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd. was formed, now known as E.Z. Industries Ltd.

THE EXISTENCE of petroleum in the rocks of Ohio and Indiana seems to have been first shown by wells dug for salt. The fuel, however, was objectionable owing to its odor and inflammability. Not until the brake well was drilled in 1859 did the people appreciate the value of rock oil, and then they at once began plans to secure the coveted fuel.. The first successful well in these two states was near . Macksburg, in southeast .Ohio, where at a depth of 59 ft. (17 m.) :oil was found in commercial quantity (1860). A year later this fuel was secured on Cow Run, in the same county, and at about the same time in Noble, Morgan and perhaps other counties in that part of Ohio. The second great step in the production of oil in Ohio and Indiana was taken in 1884 when the reservoir of natural gas in the Trenton limestone of northwest Ohio was tapped, and where a year later oil was secured in the same formation. Petroleum in this limestone was obtained in Indiana in 1889.1 The third step in the production of oil' in Ohio and Indiana is associated with the Clinton sand of Ohio. Natural gas in large volume was discovered in that rock at Lancaster, in 1887, and the area has been extended until it has become the largest individual producer in the world. The presence of natural gas in such great volume all but demonstrated to the driller that-oil lay hidden near by. Soon the search for it was started but not until 1899 was petroleum in commercial quantity found in the Clinton sand, and a large pool was not located in it until 1907. The fourth step in the development of the industry was taken in 1913, when the pool in Sullivan County, in western Indiana, was opened. The producing rock is the Huron sandstone, which is the topmost member of the Mississippian system.2

All available data concerning risk as it applies to scaling up pyrometallurgical plants, processes, and equipment are determined to estimate the statistical chance of success. Random numbers are assigned to all data in order to avoid any chance of bias. The data bank is organized in such a way that an estimate can be made of the degrees of risk involved over a wide range of circumstances. Included are duplicating existing designs and large commercial installations based on smaller commercial installations, pilot models, or bench models.
