MINE power systems are quite different in many respects from those usually found in industrial plants. Wide areas are served, usually by a circuit which is connected continuously throughout the mine. In some mines one circuit may run for several miles. There are usually a small number of branch circuits involved considering the areas covered. In all mines circuits are sectionalized at approximately 2500 ft by means of switches. All, or at least most branch circuits, are sectionalized by manual switches. In some mines automatic sectionalizing gear is used to give automatic overload protection at various strategic points in the system. However at the present time this practice is by no means general. Circuit hazards in mine electric systems are much greater than those encountered in industrial installation. Falls of roof or coal form a prominent hazard which may break the wire and may cause ground faults or partial ground faults. Ordinarily electric cables in mines cannot be insulated, there- fore n fall can easily cause a short circuit. The humidity in most mines is greater than 95 pct and at many points the floor is wet and water may be dripping from the roof over insulators, increasing the difficulties at that point. All electrical circuits must be contained in the mine entries and space must also be provided for moving equipment and men. Consequently, because of the proximity of the power circuit to the locomotives and other moving equipment a considerable hazard is introduced. Mine haulage track is not always good so that wrecks are not unusual. A wreck frequently does consider- able damage to the power circuit. A ground fault frequently results in heavy arcing which may be sustained. If the damage to the circuit is mechanical it may mean that a trip of coal has wrecked and a great deal of coal dust could be thrown into the air as a result of the wreck. The arc resulting from the ground fault could ignite the coal dust and a mine explosion would result. A continued ground fault, even if high in resistance, also may ignite the coal which may be on the bottom of the entry and a mine fire may result. The fire hazard is one of the most serious hazards in any coal mine. Since the mine circuit is completely interconnected, any power interruption resulting from a fault seriously affects the whole operation. Unless the mine is completely sectionalized the whole mine will be shut down until the fault is located and the proper switches are opened to isolate the fault; even then large areas may still be without power if they are supplied by a single power circuit which may be opened in isolating the fault. Further, mine power is usually supplied from a relatively small number of substations and the fault may be on a stub feed circuit, in which case power cannot be restored until the fault has been cleared. Practice varies widely with respect to placement of substations. Usually they will be spaced from I to 2 miles in 500V operations, and at 1 mile intervals or less, in 250 V operation. Actual mining operations govern substation placements and no general rules can be followed.

HAVE been asked many times by financial men in New York as to the best way of securing an interest or control of a gold mine in Canada. It must be understood at the start that prospectors and early owners will not sell a 100 per cent interest. They not only retain from 10 to 25 per cent interest, depending upon the work done, but usually demand more or less cash to reimburse them for expenses. These conditions are accepted by Canadian capital and operating mines looking for new properties. The winter is not a hindrance to work but may be of great advantage. The overburden of soil and gravel is generally wet and most difficult to trench in the summer time especially if at all deep. The snow also permits easy transportation of freight. Properties distant from rail transport all of their machinery and supplies during the winter months.

In February of this year at the Washington, D.C., hearings of the Interior Department on the Alaska pipeline, the author was amazed to hear speaker after speaker oppose not only pipline construction but any development whatsoever in the State of Alaska. In one case, a man objected to development in Alaska because his neighbor in Maryland had cut down some shade trees. Another man recited at length from the poems of Robert W. Service. While it seemed inconceivable that such thoughtless opposition should have any effect, a check with the offices of some congressmen showed that mail was largely against any development of Alaska. In the barrage of words and redundant phrases directed against Alaska, it is difficult to find a thought worthy of study. Fortunately, there is a statutory guide towards resolution of the problem of development versus non- development. This law, the Environ- mental Protection Act of 1969, has indeed given much of industry the jitters; copper smelters see no way to comply with the new sulfur- emission standards, the Alaska Department of Highways estimates that the Act has nearly doubled the cost of planning and engineering for highway construction. In spite of these and many other troubles and costs, the Act provides a sound legal basis for defeating nihilistic emotions and, since Alaska is relatively undeveloped, adoption of environmental safeguards will be simpler than correcting longstanding abuses.

INTRODUCTION PLACER is a Spanish word, the definitions of which include "an extensive bank of sand or gravel" and "a place where currents of water deposit particles of gold."l The term, probably first used in the western hemisphere by Spanish or Mexican gold miners, is now generally applied to all detrital deposits that yield valuable minerals by washing. In the Western States placer products other than gold, including the silver alloyed with it, are chiefly sapphires, produced in Montana, and platinum alloys recovered in California and Oregon. During the war tungsten ore (scheelite) was obtained from placers in the Atolia district, California, and a number of diamonds have been found in the Sierra Nevada gold belt. Small amounts of stream tin have been produced in the Black Hills of South Dakota and a little monazite sand in the Boise Basin. Idaho. Magnetite, chromite, ilmenite, zircon, and other useful minerals are more or less abundant in the beach placers of the Pacific coast and in the heavy residues of placer mining elsewhere, but the problems of profitably separating and marketing them remain to be solved. Minerals of lead, quicksilver and other metals occur in many of the placers and although not plentiful enough as a rule to be worth recover-ng, their presence has, in several instances, led to the discovery of valuable lodes, notably at Leadville, Colorado. Historical summary.-In New Mesico, Arizona, and Southern California, placer gold was mined by Mexicans and Spanish priests in the first half of the 19th century or earlier. With these exceptions history of placer mining in the Western States begins with Marshall's discovery of gold in northern California in 1848. During the next twenty years placers were found in all of the principal mining districts that are known today. The richer deposits were soon mined out but a relatively large production was maintained from the leaner deposits chiefly by hydraulic

IN AUGUST, 1927, the writer examined certain copper deposits in New Mexico, which occur in beds of sandstones and shale, and in connection therewith reviewed the literature upon deposits of this type. Such deposits are known and have been reported upon at various points in Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming and Utah, but in New Mexico they have been given more development than elsewhere and apparently occur there more conspicuously than in the other states. Some 25 years ago the writer examined deposits of similar origin in northern Arizona and more recently other deposits in western and southwestern Colorado, and these examinations have led him to realize how widely scattered are the deposits and how generally non-commercial they are. On superficial development, to one without a comprehension of their geologic nature, they are alluring on account of occasional small amounts of high-grade ore and much misplaced capital has been expended upon them. This paper, therefore, aims to present briefly certain theories of genesis, some details of which may possibly be new, and to lead up to practical conclusions which may be useful to other geologists and engineers. A bibliography of the more important literature upon such deposits is given below.2 Coffin's Bulletin upon the Radium, Uranium and Vanadium Deposits of Colorado, published in 1921, is a particularly clear discussion. The most comprehensive recent statement is Butler's. He describes a large number of occurrences in Utah and connects them up genetically with deposits in other states.

CANANEA has long been recognized as a remarkable field for geologic study. The copper deposits and rocks of the district have been described by many geologists and engineers, but only the most general correlations have been made between Cananea sedimentary rocks and other known sedimentary sections in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The present paper describes the Cananea sediments in greater detail than has been done before and attempts to fit the Cananea sedimentary section more closely into the geologic time table. The lack of well-preserved fossils has made it difficult to date the sediments accurately in geo- logic time, but it is possible to make tentative correlations between the Cananea sediments and the southeastern Arizona sections, based largely upon lithology and general position in the geologic column. It appears that sedimentation at Cananea and Bisbee may have been closely similar during Paleozoic time. Even such generalized correlations, however, may be subject to considerable modification in the future. The present study has led to the recognition of other problems of age and mineralization relationships in the Cananea district. Cananea is located in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, at an elevation of 5270 ft. It is about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and 25 miles south of the international boundary. By road Cananea is 40 miles from the twin towns of Naco, Ariz., and Naco, Sonora, and about 50 miles from Bisbee, Ariz. It is served by the Nogales-Naco branch of the railroad, F.C. Pacifico, and is connected with Chihuahua and Mexico City by the Aeronaves airline.

The distribution and properties of interseam and overburden rocks in coal mines is largely controlled by conditions at the time of their original deposition. Within the developed areas of the Bowen Basin, depositional environments range from fluvial through upper and lower detaic, to marginal marine and intertidal facies. Each environment has a characteristic association of lithologies with specific range of properties, and each lithology has a characteristic geometry. Fragmentation problems are associated with ancient sand channel systems, where the difficulties encountered depend on the dimension and shape of channels, their continuity, orientation to mining face and associated sediment bodies formed as levees or interdistributary muds. Stability problems in spoil, pit floor and highwalls are usually associated with mudstones which contain swelling clays derived from the original Permian volcanic source. This clay problem is aggravated by deep Tertiary weathering. Case studies are presented of detailed analyses and prediction of geomechanical properties on a mine site scale. These are used in investigating or forecasting fragmentation and stability hazards. The studies incorporate detailed field mapping, bore log data and computer data processing. They allow the development of detailed depositional models for specific interseam intervals within mines. As areas of depositional environment are identified they allow the construction of maps of similar mining conditions and the determination of the most suitable mining techniques.

Conventional analyses of seepage through saturated media do not apply when tailings impoundments are located above a partially saturated zone. Three stages of seepage are identified and methods for estimating the seepage rates and duration of each stage, based upon flow in partially saturated and saturated porous media, are demonstrated. The effectiveness of earthen liners is discussed and procedures for estimating the required properties of the porous media are provided.

IN connection with an investigation in this laboratory on the high-zinc side of the copper-zinc system, it was observed that well developed segre-gate structures of the Widmanstätten type were formed when a secondary phase precipitated from the solid solution of copper in zinc. This paper presents an analysis of the crystallographic relationship between the segregate and the solid solution matrix. The data to be presented are an interesting addition to the literature on segregate structures in that the plane of segregation is one of the less densely populated planes. In agreement with the generalization of C. H. Mathewson and D. W. Smith1 the plane of segregation in the matrix con-tains the direction of closest atomic packing of the lattice. Furthermore, the matrix and the segregate are both hexagonal close-packed, which has not been reported hitherto in the literature.2 The increasing com-mercial importance of zinc alloys containing copper makes this funda-mental study of value to the metallography of zinc alloys.

THE object of this investigation was to determine the distribution of chemical elements within a large, killed alloy-steel ingot, by sulphur printing and quantitative chemical analysis. With regard to segregation in steel ingots, the factors of melting practice, pouring temperatures, mold design, etc., and the mechanics of solidification and its attendant functions, have been the subject of intensive study over a period of years by many investigators. Notable among these is the Sub-Committee of the No. 5 Committee of the British Iron and Steel Institute. For an exposition 0f the many problems awaiting the researcher on the heterogeneity of steel ingots, the methods of attacking these problems, together with some of the answers, the reader is referred to the nine reports and numerous papers of that committee and its membership. STEELMAKING DATA Melt.-The heat was made in a 70-ton direct arc-type basic electric furnace. Furnace charge consisted of nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel, most of it in the form of heavy mill scrap. All of the scrap was charged cold. The standard double-slag method was employed, the heat being finished under a strong carbide slag. Aluminum was used as the deoxidizing agent. Tapping temperature, as observed with an optical pyrometer, was 3000°F. Detail of Mold and Ingot Size.-Details of the ingot mold and the ingot itself are given in Fig. I. Teeming.-Teeming temperature of the subject ingot as observed with an optical pyrometer was 2830°F. The ingot was top-poured directly through a 1 ½ in. nozzle and required 7 min., 44 sec. to fill up to the hot top. An additional 2 min., 30 sec. were required to fill the hot top. The ingot was stripped hot and charged with the remainder of the heat into an annealing furnace. There it was given the standard annealing cycle used for these ingots. Subsequent heat-treatments are described elsewhere in this paper. SECTIONING AND PREPARATION FOR SULPHUR PRINTING Because of previous favorable experience in sectioning ingots up to 21 ½ in. square with an oxyacetylene torch, it was decided to use this method to section the subject ingot. The ingot was preheated to 900°F. for 12 hr. It was then placed on a steel bed in a horizontal position so that the longitudinal axis was level and parallel to the track of the motor-driven torch carrier. Two cuts were made, one 2 in. above the longitudinal axis and the other 2 in. below. The time required to make each cut was approximately 75 min. The cutting operation is shown in Figs. z and 3. The 4-in. thick slab was mmediately charged into a furnace standing at 1200°F.

IN dealing with segregation in babbitt, and its effect on the final cast structure, which is a bearing, it is obviously impossible to cover all of the compositions manufactured. Each composition, of course, will exhibit certain specific types of segregation. However, as examples,, two compositions of babbitt are presented: one a tin-base of well-known analysis and the other a lead-base, which in the past few years has found wide usage. Bearings usually are cast either statically or centrifugally; therefore the effect of these two methods on segregation is presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A slab of babbitt 1/2 in. thick by 5 in. wide and 17 in. long was cast, using a book mold with the long edge vertical. An A.S.T.M. grade 2 babbitt was used (3.5 per cent copper, 7.5 per cent antimony, remainder tin), to which 0.10 per cent tellurium had been added. Unfortunately, no metal without tellurium was available. The mold to hold the babbitt was heated to approximately 300°F., the temperature being judged by the babbitter. The pouring temperature of the babbitt was 875°F. (470°C.). One slab was made by allowing the babbitt to cool without stirring. The other slab was stirred during the entire cooling cycle. This stirring consisted of a vigorous churning or puddling into the mold until complete solidification had taken place. Three samples were removed from these slabs. One was taken at the extreme bottom, another half way to the top, and another at the extreme top, all at the center of the width. Chemical, macroscopic and microscopic examination was made of all samples. Table I shows the chemical analyses obtained at the described positions [ ] in the slab. The analyses show no serious amount of gravity segregation. Microscopic examination from edge to edge of the slab showed little change in structure. From top to bottom there was a progressive coarsening of the grain size in the stirred slab but little change in the slab that was not stirred (Fig. I). No definite exhibit of segregation could be detected. In line with our experimental study on the tin-base babbitts, we cast an almost duplicate slab using A.S.T.M. Alloy No. 15, containing 0.9 to 1.25 per cent tin, 14.75 to 15.5. per cent antimony, 0.80 to 1.25 per cent arsenic and 0.4 per cent copper. The slab was 16 in. long and 3/8 in. thick, cast with the long side vertical. One slab was allowed to cool normally and the other was stirred continually during cooling. INTRODUCTION SEVERAL years ago the writer was connected with the Mint and Assay Service of the Federal Government as Assistant Assayer at the-Salt Lake Assay Office. At that time cyanide bars formed approximately half of the bullion purchased by that office. Disagreement in valuation between the producer and the office was not infrequent and to a lesser extent between the Assay Office and the Mint, this latter issue being soon obviated, however, by adopting uniform methods of sampling the bars. A nice problem seemed to offer itself for research and the writer began a series of experiments which were soon terminated, however, by his going into other work, and which he regrets have not since been completed. The results attained may suggest lines of approach to this problem and are, therefore, offered in this article. Frederick P. Dewey, Assayer of the Mint Service, U. S. Treasury, has had abundant opportunity to study this phase of metallurgy, and has published several articles relative thereto.1 In the last article cited Dewey quotes analyses of cyanide bullion similar in content to that with which the writer worked, and which show some of the variations met with. In the discussion of these papers,2 comparison has been made in terms of copper bullion, but to the writer this seems of questionable value. Copper bullion may resemble silver bullion, but its similarity to, gold bullion with little or no silver content is another thing. The freezing-point diagram of Roozeboom, reproduced on page 881 of the discussion cited, is for the gold-silver series as stated. Discussion of the paper of JAMES H. HANCE, presented at the New York meeting, .February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 299 to 326. FREDERIC P. DEWEY, Washington, D. C. (communication to the Secretary*).-I wish to congratulate Professor Hance and to thank him for his extremely valuable addition to the fund of data upon this subject. It presents clearly conclusive and incontrovertible proof of the unreliability of drill samples of this class of metal for determining the value of such bullion. I am afraid, however, that his hope that some one in the mint service might continue such an investigation upon a more elaborate and exhaustive scale is, for the present at least, doomed to disappointment. As a practical matter, the mint service is not now particularly interested in segregation in crude bullion. So much trouble and friction arose, -both in the original purchase and in the transfer from one institution to another, in handling segregated bullion, that it became necessary to adopt drastic measures and now it is seldom attempted to determine the value of such bullion in the service. When bullion known or even suspected of being segregated is presented for purchase, it is at once strongly refined in the pot and the disturbing elements so far removed that concordant assays may certainly be obtained from the dip samples and a reasonably fair agreement obtained from drill samples. The mint service prefers that the owner should refine his bullion himself, but if he does not we will do it at his expense and return the slag to him when desired. Much work has been done in the mint service trying to arrive at the value of deposits of segregated bullion without strong refining. It was no unusual thing for such deposits to be melted three times at the purchasing office and to have 30 to 40 assays on the metal made before buying it. Yet when shipped to a mint it was found necessary to melt two or three times more and to make 15 to 25 assays before the mint would accept the bar, and there were considerable differences between the valuations of the two offices. In what was undoubtedly the worst case ever investigated, the purchasing office melted the deposit, 953 oz., three times, with a loss of 105.5 oz., and made 46 assays; the mint melted three times, with a loss of 6.6 oz., and made 28 assays. The mint allowed the purchasing office 1.178 oz. of fine gold more than the purchasing office claimed, while an extensive investigation of the mint samples by the Bureau, in which over 100 independent assays were made in various service laboratories, indicated that the metal carried 0.7 to 0.9 oz. more of fine gold than the mint allowed. THE normal method of preparing metallic alloys for commercial use involves the preparation of a melt containing the given components in the chosen proportions and allowing the homogeneous liquid mass to solidify in a mold of the desired form. The solidification is frequently accompanied by a segregation of the alloying elements in different parts of the casting. When the segregation is occasioned primarily by marked differences in density of the solid and liquid phases, it is termed "gravity" segregation. When the segregation conforms to a. selective freezing in harmony with the teachings of the equilibrium diagram of the alloy system-i.e., the lower melting phases are concentrated in the regions of the casting last to freeze-it is often referred to as " normal" segrega-tion. However, in many cases the lower-melting part of the system is concentrated in the parts of the casting first to freeze and the result in this case is termed "inverse" segregation. To complete the. terminology of the subject, normal segregation in a single phase is usually called "coring" and the word will be used in that sense in this paper. Inverse segregation, particularly when the liquid phase is exuded or sweated out on the surface of the casting, is sometimes called "location." Unfortunately, some ambiguity has arisen from the use of this term and it is perhaps advisable to confine its use to the dictionary definition; namely, "The separation of two phases by heat sufficient to melt one but not the other." The gravity and normal types of segregation are both well understood and to some extent are controllable by taking advantage of the most favorable cooling rate for a given casting condition. Inverse segregation has received considerable attention from several investigators- but none of the theories offered seem to account in a convincing way for the many examples of this type. The observations made in the present work on segregation in single crystals, and in some other castings, tend to support one theory of the mechanism of inverse segregation and definitely to

THE CHAIRMAN.-Mr. Earle Smith- has kindly offered to make some remarks in connection with segregation in the product, Mr. Smith: E. C. SMITH,* Cleveland, Ohio-I will start this off by a story of the code days of the American Iron and Steel Institute. In those days, Republic did not have a big strip mill, and the question came up of the check analysis of rimmed steel. I suggested that they let me be the chairman of the Committee on Accumulating the Information on the Variation of the Composition of the Ingots of Rimmed Steel. Somebody wanted to know why I wanted to be the chairman. I said, "We don't make any of the big ingots of rimmed steel, and no matter who makes them they are so bad that you don't dare publish the information. So if I collect it and hide it you can't charge me with having done anything that really disrupted the commercial situation. So, everybody furnished me with a rather complete story as to the horrible variations in big rimmed ingots. I took it out to my house and put it away, and it is still there. Now, segregation in the big ingot is no longer an "-academic-matter-as far as II am concerned. ¬I am in a situation like that of the German who was told in 1936 about the coming war. He said: "Until it is your throat that is going to be cut, you don't pay any attention to what is happening to the other man." That is the way with the problem that we have in front of us. Recently I have been told that the comptroller was questioning the payment for certain articles of stamped steel that had been made from rimmed steel, because upon check analysis of the rimmed steel it had been determined that these stamped articles were not within the compositions that were included in the specification, and therefore he as the comptroller had no alternative. It was not meeting the specification; therefore, no payment. So I would say to all of you: You can very seriously consider this matter of segregation now and on into the future on the basis of the fact that it is actually going to cost your companies, which are making these products, money unless there is some new idea about the infallibility of quantitative chemists who analyze some of these products or lawyers who read specifications. I don't know which man is going to be the major factor in the future. If the National Bureau of Standards could in some way show the specification writers the variation between good chemists analyzing for what they expect to be umpire results, the writers would certainly realize that some of the specifications to which we have calmly signed our names as being O.K. are well, as one man said to me, they might be filled by the devil, and they, certainly could be filled by the Lord, but they could not be filled by mankind. I would like to inject two or three things into a segregation study which I want you to think about, because I would be a little surprised if there is very much discussion of them. In the first place, we generally make steel in the United States in the basic open hearth, and I do not think there has been nearly enough consideration given to segregation within the bath before it moves into the ladle. I am sure that any of the people who handled the 9400 series of the NE series when it contained the 0.60 per cent silicon have more respect than they had previously for the segregation that is within the ladle; that is, before the metal reaches the ingot mold, the frozen ingots and the segregation in them. Another point to which I think we ought to give serious consideration is the segregation of iron oxide in the ingot-iron type of material, where the distinction between that and the steel segregation is that it is actually segregating iron oxide. Normally we are segregating some form of carbon or sulphur, or something like. that, with the stamping steel industry now coming down into the ranges of chemistry, where the segregation of iron oxide will be just

MANY of the difficult operating problems of the preparation of coal for market, of sampling coal shipments and in the utilization of coal are caused by segregation in the coal mass. Segregation may be of two kinds: i.e., "size segregation," in which parti- cles of the same size in a mass of coal containing a range of sizes collect to-gether and "density segregation," in which particles of the same density or specific gravity in a mass of particles of varying density gather together. MECHANICS OF SEGREGATION Size segregation cannot take place with closely sized coal. As the size range increases, the tendency for size segregation increases. Similarly, cleaned coal with particles of approxi- mately the same specific gravity have very little tendency for density segrega- tion. The wider the density range of particles and the more particles of different density, the greater the chances are for density segregation. A fast, easy, and inexpensive method of determining the consolidation of overburden in surface mining operations through seismic analysis has been developed. The method involves use of a refraction seismograph which measures overall consolidation of subsurface materials, including such factors as rock hardness, stratification or lamination, fracturing or jointing, and the degree of weathering or decomposition. It also is possible to determine the thickness of various layers of subsurface materials to depths exceeding 100 ft.

The series of earthquakes in the vicinity of Koyna Dam in south- western India, which included a very damaging magnitude 6.5 shock on Dec. 11, 1967 (Dec. 10 GMT), is of much interest. The events are exceptionally well documented, which is a tribute to Indian geologists, seismologists, and engineers. To help in disseminating the information in the United States, this chapter presents a brief summary of the pertinent data and lists references. Koynanagar (Koynatown), which began as the construction camp for the dam, is located about 140 miles southeast of Bombay and 70 miles south of Poona at 17.4ºN and 73.7ºE, about 40 miles inland from the Arabian Sea. Koyna River flows almost due south from its source a distance of about 38 miles and then makes an abrupt turn to the east and travels some 480 miles to empty into the Bay of Bengal. Koyna Dam is located about 3 miles north of this turn. The approximately north-south trending continental divide is a few miles west of Koyna and the terrain drops steeply about 1700 ft to where the hydroelectric generating station is located. The reservoir behind Koyna Dam forms a long, narrow lake (Shiva- jisagar Lake) with mean water level (MWL) at 2160-ft elevation. The 345-sq-mile watershed receives an annual rainfall of about 200 in., most of which falls between mid-June and mid-October. The peak storage is 99 x l09 cu ft. A controlled flow passes under the continental divide in a tunnel and then down to the electric generating station about 5 miles WNW of the dam. The inflow not used for power generation is released to Koyna River. The Koyna project is a major source of electric power for Bombay and produces 540 MW at peak load.
