USUALLY we forget about the things which move along smoothly. There are no causes for worry when there are no troubles. But when troubles arise we must put forth some thought and effort to alleviate them. No one "worries about his automobile until it begins to knock, develop flat tires, or refuses to start. However, when these ailments become apparent we get wide awake on the spot, and do our best to repair the car. So we find ourselves now. The old bus seems to hit all the ditches. There is rough ground on all sides and none of us is able to do anything toward improvement. A state of pessimism stares us in the face, and there is sufficient cause for it. With lead at 3.75 cents, copper about 8 cents, zinc under 4 cents, -and silver about 26 cents, one has a reason for grief. When we think of the 5000 or less men employed in Utah mines and smelters in 1931, as compared with about 12,000 in 1929, the calamity seems even worse. In view of the present economic crisis we cannot even think of new men getting a job.

IN a single-crystal cube of iron the arrangement of the atoms is that characteristic of iron at room temperature: the body-centered cubic lattice. X-ray investigation has shown this structure to be characteristic of iron, as it has shown the atomic arrangement of other metals to be characteristic of those metals also. Rarely do substances have more than one characteristic atomic arrangement. Many physical properties of metals are directly connected with their atomic arrangements, so that changes of arrangements produce changes of properties. Only chemical change influences atomic arrangement. If a difference in the physical properties of a metal is caused by a process which involves no chemical change, the cause of the difference in properties must be sought elsewhere than in the atomic arrangement. Frequently this cause can be traced to alteration of crystal orientation. The orientation of a crystal may be defined as the relationship which the crystallographic axes bear to some quantity of reference. A cube of iron appears cubic whether it is regarded from a face, an edge, or a corner. Yet these three positions represent three different orientations of the cube with respect to the observer. It is evident that the orientation of this cube of iron, unlike the atomic arrangement, is not characteristic of iron but is entirely dependent on the previous history of the cube. Most of the processes of metal working, such as wire-drawing, rolling, and bending, change the orientation of the crystals present in the worked metals. These processes usually tend to produce rotation of the crystals into positions approaching a mean. Specimens of metals show-ing this characteristic are said to possess a preferred, orientation. Tensile strength, ductility, and many other properties are influenced by orientation changes; therefore two specimens of the same metal may show different values of these quantities. In metal specimens possessing a narrowly limited preferred orientation, these quantities will vary in magnitude in different directions throughout the specimens. THE investigation discussed in this paper concerns phase equilibria in the alumina-silica-water system. Studies in this system are part of a re¬search project sponsored by the Geophysics Branch of the Office of Naval Research2 directed toward increasing knowledge of the stability relations of metamorphic mineral assemblages. Inasmuch as metamorphic rocks consist largely of aluminosilicate struc¬tures, many of them hydrated, the system alumina-silica-water is a logical starting point for the systematic laboratory study of metamorphic mineral systems. Although logical, this is not, however, an easy approach to the problem because of the very great difficulty of obtaining transformations among structures in response to changes in temperature, pressure, and con¬centration. Commonly equilibrium among the phases in this system is exceed¬ingly difficult to attain. New laboratory techniques are required to produce certain structural rearrangements, such as inversion of diaspore to boehmite or the transformation of alumina-silica mixtures to andalusite or kyanite. Phase equilibrium data for the alumina-silica-water system are consequently only partly complete, and only a summary progress report is presented here. Crystalline phases in the alumina-silica-water system are numerous and many are common minerals. The oxide components exist as: quartz, tridymite, cristobalite, corundum, water, and ice. Binary compounds occurring naturally are: sillimanite, andalusite, kyanite, and mullite in the alumina-silica system and gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore in the alumina-water system. The most abundant among the ternary compounds is the composition A12O3.2SiO2.¬2H2O, existing in the four structural modifications, kaolinite, nacrite, dickite, and halloysite. The hydrated form of halloysite, A12O3.2SiO2.4H2O, is here called endellite. Pyrophyllite, A12O3.4SiO2.H2O, is the third ternary compound of natural occurrence. In addition to these minerals, two other ternary crystalline phases have been encountered in this study. The first is a structure resembling montmorillonite and corresponding perhaps to the pure aluminian end member of the beidellite series. The other has a composition approximating A12O3.2SiO2.H2O but its composition and structure are still in doubt. This article discusses methods of improving airborne capture by conventional dust suppression systems. The work was performed in a full-scale plywood model of a mine entry with a wooden mockup of a Joy 12 CM continuous miner. Dust was introduced at the front of the entry, and water sprays knocked down part of the dust cloud. Sampling in the return air determined the percentage dust reduction. Based on the results, guidelines are offered for continuous miner spray systems to control dust. Empirical relations have been developed to determine the effect of changes in water spray pressure on air movement, dust knockdown, and pollutant concentrations in the face return. Nozzle selection and arrangement are discussed for high dust knockdown efficiencies.

Prior to 1950 most fertilizer manufactured in the United States was produced in a nongranular form. In such form, the material caked when stored and was extremely dusty when applied in the field. About this time a wide interest developed in the fertilizer industry for the manufacture of a granular, high-analysis fertilizer of improved physical properties. Thus, TVA began work on fertilizer granulation about 1950 using both a pugmill (double-shaft paddle mixer) for a thick slurry of nitric phosphate and a continuous ammoniator-granulator drum for superphosphate-base mixed fertilizer. Granulation in these units was mainly by agglomeration. The liquid phase generated by the moisture and by the heat of reaction of ammonia with acidic materials, such as superphosphate and sulfuric or phosphoric acids, resulted in agglomeration of the solid ingredients. About 1956, TVA began studies of the use of a pan or disk granulator for production of ammonium nitrate or other fertilizers containing a large proportion of ammonium nitrate, such as 30-10-0 ammonium phosphate nitrate. This is the layering method of granulation. More recently, TVA has demonstrated pan granulation of urea from a highly concentrated solution and granulation of ammonium polyphosphate melts in a pugmill. The bulk of TVA studies throughout the years has related to use of the drum granulator. About 200 granulation plants in the United States have been licensed and built to use the TVA continuous ammoniator-granulator; it is estimated that more than half of the 20 million tons of mixed fertilizer used in the United States in 1974/1975 was produced in these plants. Some other granulation processes developed for use in the drum granulator include diammonium phosphate, monoammonium phosphate, urea- ammonium phosphate, ammoniated superphosphate, and most recently, NPK fertilizers by melt granulation using a pipe reactor.

FOSTER BAIN.+ THE recently aroused public interest in the conservation of our natural resources has peculiar importance to mining-men, since they deal with resources which are stored products. Within certain limits, the fertility of a worn-out soil may be restored, deforested areas can be replanted, one year's wasted water-supply is followed by another; but coal and ores, once taken out, cannot be mined again, and should therefore be conserved with especial care. This means, however, not that mining should be restricted, but that it should be done most economically and with the minimum of waste.

Stability investigations have been carried out in a number of major coal mining tunnels in the U.K. using various instrumentatcon techniques. The paper describes these instrumentation methods and presents results from studies in several tunnels. Both long and short term stability aspects are discussed. Prediction of tunnel stability is examined in relation to tunnel support requirements. Computer simulation techniques are used along with actual underground measurements to identify tunnel design parameters for influencing choice of support and prediction of long term stability.
