Yunnan, a mountainous province in southwestern China, began to assume its place as an important producer of copper toward the end of the Ming dynasty (latter part of the 16th century), and since then has continued, with minor interruptions, to occupy a leading position as one of the few areas in China where relatively significant amounts of this metal can be produced. Among the copper deposits of this province, those of the following three localities have stood out as being the most significant. 1. Tung-ch'uan, in northeastern Yunnan. Here the ores are primarily bornite and chalcocite, with copper content ranging from 2% to 15% the most noteworthy T'ang-tan mine producing ores averaging 12% copper. Estimated total reserve of pure copper in this area is approximately 1,000,000 metric tons.

One of the great copper-producing areas of the world is comprised of five U. S. western states and northern Sonora, Mexico. The Southwest province of this area, covering southern Arizona, south- western New Mexico, and northern Sonora, produces some 55 pct of U. S. copper output and the equivalent of 15 pct of world production. In 1956 the area produced about 550,000 tons. Tucson is approximately the center of the oval- shaped province, which measures only 300 miles on its east-west axis and about 200 miles on its short axis. Northwest of the oval, and forming a tenuous connection with the Utah and Nevada copper fields, is an important operating mine, Bagdad, and also the now inactive United Verde. Along its north- south axis, running from Globe, through Tucson, to Nogales, ten moderate to major copper properties have been discovered or revived during the past 15 years, and five of these in only the past seven years. The latter five properties lie in an area 25 miles in diameter, centering 20 miles south of Tucson. In order of discovery, or revival, they are: Banner's Mineral Hill and Daisy; Cyprus et al's Pima; Duval's Esperanza; Asarco's East Pima (now called Mission mine) ; and Lewisohn's Peach. Total tonnage is estimated at about 250 million tons averaging some 0.90 pct Cu, but ultimate production may exceed this amount since some of the reserve is open ended.

THE study of copper alloys of the age-hardening type has received considerable attention, and, among the alloys which the authors have considered, those containing small amounts of nickel and phosphorus as essential constituents seem especially interesting. Such alloys have attractively great capacity for being hardened and also have relatively high electrical and thermal conductivity in the hardened state. In addition, it has been found that the increase in hardness and strength imparted by aging can be greatly augmented by cold-working, so that axcellent combinations of conductivity and strength are obtainable. In view of the possible importance of the alloys, it was considered desirable to investigate the solubility relationships in the copper-rich portion of the copper-nickel-phosphorus system. This paper presents some of the results obtained in this investigation to date and also gives properties of typical alloys that appear to be of commercial interest.

DURING recent years nickel has had an increasingly important role as an alloying element in the copper-tin bronzes. Nickel additions not only produce better casting alloys but also make alloys whose properties can be varied by precipitation hardening; thus leading to increased commercial application of copper-nickel-tin alloys. Recent investigations have indicated a decrease in the solubility of tin in the alpha phase as the annealing temperature is lowered and as the nickel content is increased within certain limits. A further change caused by the nickel additions is produced in the excess phase of the copper-tin bronzes. The alpha plus delta eutectoid is replaced by a clear precipitated constituent in the alloys containing up to 15 per cent tin and not less than 1 per cent nickel. This paper has a dual purpose. The first is to present a new determination of the alpha-phase boundary in alloys containing from 0 to 20 per cent nickel, together with the liquidus and solidus temperatures above that field. The second purpose is to give the equilibrium conditions existing in alloys exceeding the alpha phase containing up to 31 per cent tin and 5 per cent nickel, so that the disappearance of the alpha plus delta eutectoid constituent may be explained. After considering the earlier investigations of the related alloy systems and the experimental procedure used in this investigation, the alloys will be discussed in groups as separate quasibinary systems containing constant amounts of nickel. The systems considered contain 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 20 per cent nickel. The straight copper-tin system was reinvestigated in order to establish a foundation on which to build the remaining material. The 1 per cent nickel alloys studied give the relations existing in the region of the eutectoid transformation between the copper-tin system and the 2 per cent nickel copper-tin system which has been investigated in detail. COPPER base alloys containing various amounts of aluminum and silicon are of considerable commercial interest. In particular the alloy containing 7 pct aluminum and 2 pct silicon shows an attractive combination of high strength with excellent machinability. Since there is no evidence in the literature that this ternary system has been studied since the recognition by Smith1 and Anderson2 in 1939 of the kappa phase of the binary copper-silicon system, the determination of the equilibrium phase relationships in the copper corner of the ternary diagram has been undertaken to provide a fundamental basis for understanding the behavior of these alloys. Phase boundaries have been determined by the micrographic examination of quenched samples while points on the liquidus surface have been obtained by thermal analysis. The results, of sufficient precision to serve their major purpose of providing a guide for the control of the manufacture of alloys in the region covered, are presented in a series of both isothermal and vertical sections of the diagram. ALLOYS STUDIED For a rough survey of the copper corner of this ternary system the compositions listed in Table I (Series A) were employed. The results of examinations of these alloys indicated that the compositions listed in Table 2 (Series B) would further clarify regions of greater complexity. All alloys were prepared as 1200 g heats, the copper being melted under charcoal, and then first silicon and then aluminum were added. An [ ] excess of 0.05 pct silicon was allowed to cover deoxidation losses. Two small bars 5/8 by 1 ¼ by 1 ¼ in. were cast using Durville type casting equipment. Analyses were made on all alloys using material which was hot-rolled at 800 or 850°C and annealed 17 hr at 650°C. All analyses were found to be within 0.05 pct of the nominal composition. Since the precision of analysis is not much better than this, the points of both isothermal sections and vertical sections at fixed aluminum and silicon contents have been plotted at the compositions indicated by the nominal composition.

Copper from Central Africa was well known to the Arab slave traders who depredated the country in the nineteenth century. By the 1870's slave raiding was so intense that the habits of the tribes were disrupted, and they no longer worked the copper deposits or made the crosses and bars of copper which had been their custom. In fact, the country had been greatly depopulated by the slave raiders. News of this horror was spread to the civilized world by missionaries and, in particular, by David Livingstone's writings. Whether to extend geographic knowledge, to suppress slavery or for national aggrandizement, the rush for African territory was on at the end of the nineteenth century. Cecil Rhodes at this time was established by his successes in diamonds and gold. He obtained the blessing of Lord Salisbury in 1889 to form the British South Africa Company under crown charter. His objectives were to occupy the lands north of the Zambezi for England and pay for development out of the country's mineral deposits. He planned to occupy the territory and close the gap to form an all-British route from the Cape to Cairo, one of his great dreams. With this master plan in mind he sent his agents into the field to make treaties with the tribes.

WE must begin by defining what we mean by the Copperbelt. This term is generally used to denote that region of Northern Rhodesia in which the copper mines of that territory are situated. The first published use of the term Copperbelt we have been able to trace dates back to 1905. The African World of December of that year contained an article entitled "The Great Northern Copper Belts of Rhodesia." The next reference we have traced is in 1909 in an article in the Transactions of the Geo- logical Society of South Africa. It began to be used generally in the late twenties and by 1929 was in common use to denote the region which today contains the existing large copper mines of Northern Rhodesia. The first of three accompanying maps is a very simple outline map of Africa showing where Rhodesia is within Africa, and where the Copperbelt is within Rhodesia. The second is a larger scale map of the Copperbelt itself. It will be seen that within the present Copperbelt there are six producing mines. Two of these are new and four are relatively established, having started operations between the two world wars. The Copperbelt also includes a town- ship called Ndola, which is not a mining town, but a railhead on the main line. This town has developed primarily as a result of the mining industry in the neighborhood. It describes itself as the Gateway to the Copperbelt and is shortly to become a refining center.

The corejacking test is a field test designed to measure the response of salt to known boundary conditions. A 1.0-m-diameter salt core is externally pressurized using curved flatjacks placed in the annulus surrounding the core. Time-dependent deformation of the salt is measured by monitoring the diametrical closure of an inner borehole. A finite element elastic analysis of the jack loading system has been performed. The purpose of this analysis was to determine if the original assumption of axisymmetric loading is correct. Six loading cases were investigated, each representing either hypothetical or previously encountered jack configurations.

I HAVE in a previous communication called the attention of the Institute to the geognostical relations of the crystalline iron ores belonging to the Eozoic rocks of North America, at which time I noticed (1) those associated with the gneisses of the Laurentian series, (2) those of the crystalline schists of the Huronian, as seen in Northern Michigan and in many localities along the Appalachians ; (3) those of Southeastern Missouri associated with petrosilex porphyries and schistose rocks, and presumed to be nearly of the same age with those of the Huronian schists; and (4) the highly titaniferous ores of the Norian or Labradorian series from Essex County, N. Y., and from various parts of Canada. It may here be remarked that, although the presence of titanium is most marked in the Norian ores, this objectionable element is sometimes found in the schistose ores of the Huronian, and to a lesser extent in certain Laurentian magnetites. The ores of each of these geological divisions have their individual peculiarities, which serve to distinguish them to such a degree that the magnetites and specular ores of the Laurentian are as dissimilar to those of the Huronian as are the crystalline silicated rocks of the two series. As it happens that these mineralogical dissimilarities correspond to differences in composition and in adaptability to different processes of manufacture, which, in the present condition of the iron industry, are objects of special consideration to metallurgists, it will be seen that these geognostical distinctions become of great practical importance. During the past year I was desired by the Geological Commissioners of Pennsylvania to devote a few weeks to certain geological studies in the eastern part of the State, in the course of which I was enabled to make, with regard to its crystalline iron ores, some observations to which I desire to call the attention of the Institute. I may mention, in passing, that the great South Mountain belt, from the Schuylkill to the Delaware, is composed of Laurentian rocks, in which are found the characteristic ores of the series like those of the Highlands of New Jersey and New York, and of the Adiron-

FOR nearly a century, the Corocoro deposit has been renowned among geologists from the fact that it shares with the Lake Superior deposits of the United States the distinction of being the only important copper districts where native copper is worked commercially. The Corocoro district, named after the city of Corocoro, the capital of the Province of Pacajes (Department of La Paz, Bolivia) is situated towards the western edge of the Bolivian high plateau, at an altitude of a little over 13,000 ft. The most interesting part of the district is that immediately surrounding the city of Corocoro, at a distance, by railway, of 65 miles from La Paz and 210 miles to the Chilean port of Arica on the Pacific Coast. The climate of the region is that of the semi-desert, dry and relatively cold, with big differences of temperature between day and night. The rainy season begins in December and ends in March. The cupriferous lodes of Corocoro have not attracted as much interest as the silver mines of Potosi but they have been known for a long time. In the precolonial period the Indians were using the charquis, or natural native copper sheets, to make small brass objects, and the beautiful pale green brochantite of the outcrops as a source of green pigments. During the colonial period, the oxidized ores of the outcrops were worked for copper, which was used by the mint at Potosi for making currency. The native copper ores were neglected because the Spanish miners were at a loss how to concentrate and smelt them. About 1830, work by rudimentary processes, which were improved little by little, was begun on the native copper ores. The total production of native copper in the following hundred years amounted to 100,000 tons. This native copper, which was remarkably pure, was much appreciated on the European markets before the introduction of electrolytic copper. It was useful for making special ornamental brass or bronze and the granular concentrates of native copper, called barrilla, containing 80 to 85 per cent copper were suitable for making copper sulfate by direct oxidation and subsequent leaching with sulfuric acid.

Deep, Is Also Used In The Steam-Boilers, And Its Composition, As Shown By The Following Analysis, Does Not Indicate The Presence Of Any Ingredient Which Would Explain The Corrosion Grains Per U. S. Gal. Silica, 0.861 Iron Oxide And Alumina, 0.223 Calcium Carbonate, 0.2111 Calcium Sulphate, Magnesium Carbonate, Sodium And Potassium Sulphates, . 14.850 Sodium And Potassium Chlorides, 9.732 Sodium And Potassium Carbonate, 6.452 32.409 The Jackets Are Made Of Inner Plates 0.5 In. Thick And An Outer Plate I In. Thick, With 3-In. Stiffeners Between The Inner And Outer Plates. In From 10 To 12 Months The Inner Plates Have Been Reduced By Corrosion To A Thickness Of From 1/8 To 1/16 In., While The Outer Plate In The Same Time Is Reduced By Less Than 1/16 In., And The Stiffeners Show Very Little Corrosion. The Plates Are Pitted And Eaten Away In Some Places More Than In Others. There Is Practically No Scale Found On The Jackets, But When Cleaned Considerable Iron Oxide Is Found In The Bottoms. WE are here to honor again the memory of Henry Marion Howe, one of the foremost metallurgists of his time, and it is indeed a great privilege to be called upon by the Board of Directors of .this Institute to give the memorial address this year. Professor Howe started active investigation of corrosion of iron from a metallurgical standpoint in 1887, and made several important contribu-tions to the subject from 1895 to 1908.(1) ? The papers named in the bibliography are only a few of his valuable papers, but in all his works he sets a high standard of scientific accuracy, together with a clearness and power of expression rarely equaled in engineering literature. There-fore it seems appropriate on this occasion to review the work on corrosion of this distinguished gentleman and then endeavor to make a brief inventory of what has been accomplished since his time. Howe saw the beginning of the steel industry in America and before he died (May 14, 1922) witnessed it develop to a production of 45,000,000 tons per year. He was naturally very much interested in the infant industry and was quick to see the importance of the question of corrosion. It was my privilege to discuss the subject of corrosion frequently with Professor Howe at various times from 1905 to 1908; in this, as in other metallurgical problems, he sought the truth without bias and always insisted on proving an opinion or conclusion before accepting it. We should remember that when Howe started his investigation of corrosion, in 1887, steel was rapidly supplanting wrought iron. Certain papers in the early eighties (now forgotten) claiming much greater durability for wrought iron than for steel aroused Howe's interest. He could not reconcile the statement that steel was intrinsically and incurably less durable than wrought iron with the continued and widening use of steel,

THE cost of maintaining the production of an operating oil company is one of the most important, as well as one of the most difficult to estimate, of the various items which go to make up the total cost of producing oil. In the opinion of many operators the cost of drilling and developing new wells, whose production takes the place of the loss in production through decreased yield of the old wells, is considered an operating expense, for the reason that the total income-producing power of the property is not increased. The cost of these new wells may be added directly to production expense, or it may he charged to capital account, and this account depreciated to the same extent. In either case, after an oil company is on a satisfactory income-producing basis, the money for drilling new wells to maintain production must be taken from the income of the company. Three factors determine the cost of maintaining production: First, the rate of decline in yield of the wells; second, the cost of drilling and equipping new wells in terms of their production; third, the decrease in initial production of new wells as the property is drilled and gas pressure taken off the sands, etc. In order to check theoretical figures for the cost of maintaining production the writer, with the assistance of Reed Bush and Fred Tough, has compiled the following figures. It is necessary first of all to choose a period of time during which production for the field or territory studied remains fairly constant. The longer the period of time over which this condition prevails, the better. It is also necessary to eliminate or allow for any extraneous condition which may have affected the production returns, such as the shutting clown of a large number of wells, the bringing in of a well of exceptionally large yield, the opening up of virgin territory where the flush yield is greater than will he had from new wells in after years, etc.

THE milling of silver ores has arrived at a great degree of perfection in the mining districts of our Western States and Territories, and I have thought the record of the practical results obtained at the present time, in a few of the principal districts, would prove of value and interest to many of our members, both at home and abroad. An American silver mill is composed, in descending order from where the ore is dumped, of: 1st. A rock-breaker, usually of the Blake or Alden pattern ; 2d. The battery of stamps, the number of which varies from 5 to 120, generally in batteries of 5 or 10 heads, so arranged that a single battery may stand while the others are running; 3d. The tanks where the crushed ore settles (if it is a wet stamping-mill), or of a drying-floor if the crushing is done dry; 4th. Amalgamating pans ; 5th. Settling pans ; 6th. Agitators or pans in which mercury escaping in the tailings is caught; 7th. Blanket sluices, over which the tailings run, and where mercury and unamalgamated sulphides are saved. A reference to the engravings (see plate), which show one of the latest forms of an 80-stamp silver-mill run by a turbine water-wheel, will show clearly the arrangement of the several parts. THE ONTARIO, UTAH, SILVER MILL. One of the best examples of a silver-mill, and at the same time one of the most successful concerns in the West, is the mill of the Ontario Silver Mining Company, near Salt Lake, in Utah. This mill treats the ore from the Ontario mine, ore which at present is very base, being composed of zinc, lead, and silver sulphides and silver chloride in a quartz gangue. This ore has become baser as the mine attained greater depth, though the vein holds its own, or rather increases, both in thickness and richness. The quite diverse backgrounds of the authors and their mutual interest in reducing transportation costs has produced some interesting innovations. A few words about their background will tell the reason for this joint paper. . . One is a shipping executive with a background of shipowning, ship management, ship and cargo brokerage and chartering, and most facets of the steamship industry, both American and International. The other is a chemical engineer, thoroughly brought up in the American chemical and mineral industries, with several top managerial positions behind him. They began cooperating when U.S. Borax was contemplating a change in its export shipping program and studying the freight cost for shipping borax from The mines in the Californian desert to Europe, and eastern U. S. markets. In the 20 Mule Team days, borax was exported in 50 pound bags. In 1960 it was still shipped in 50 pound hags. Three main products were shipped: two were anhydrous, and all three were sensitive to impurities. The products were bagged at the plant in the Mohave Desert, and shipped about 150 miles by rail to the port in Los Angeles. From Los Angeles, shipment was made by Conference steamship lines at Conference rates. Anyone who has shipped bagged material to Europe by steamer knows that the tab is anywhere from $20 to $30 or more per ton.

Fox most of their practical applications metals are required to with-stand stresses of appreciable magnitude: indeed, it is because they possess the quality of resisting stress without becoming permanently deformed that they find such extensive use in the service of man. Metals and alloys must, in service, usually behave as elastic substances-or nearly so. It is not difficult to satisfy this condition at ordinary temperatures. Iron and its alloys, especially the steels, are at normal temperatures excellent elastic bodies, capable of satisfying most of the mechanical requirements of the engineer: where electrical, chemical or other properties are impor-tant, which cannot be met by steels, it is usually possible to find a non-ferrous alloy such as nickel, copper or aluminum, which will prove satisfactory. When the metals or alloys are not inherently sufficiently elastic, cold-working or heat-treatment may develop elastic properties to a sufficient extent for practical needs. By means of relatively simple, rapid tests we can measure such properties as elastic modulus, limit of proportionality and proof stress, upon which design can be based with confidence. The case of the soft metals, such as lead and tin, is well known to be exceptional. They possess no definite limit of elasticity, and the value of proof stress or tensile strength depends to a great extent on the speed with which the test is carried out. Design here must be based on other considerations than a well-established theory of the proportionality of stress and strain. It is now generally recognized that steels and non-ferrous alloys possess at temperatures not greatly exceeding that of the atmosphere, characteristics quite different from those existing at ordinary temperatures, and that they assume qualities similar to those of the soft metals. Not only have they no limit of elasticity, but the proof stress and the ultimate stress depend on the time of application of the load. Flow under load may persist for long periods of time, possibly indefinitely, and the determination of a true maximum stress becomes a matter of great difficulty.

THE problem, of the crippled soldier in industry is not a problem of war work only; it is a problem of industrial development. As individuals, each one of you is seeking to provide our maimed heroes with such teaching as will render them, in the shortest possible amount of time, productive and satisfied members of the community. As individuals you are interested in the organizations that are preparing to receive these men, to train them and to place them at that work for which they are best fitted. As an organization, it is now your duty to take up the industrial end of the problem, to investigate existing conditions in the industries, to discover where the opportunities for employment lie, and so readjust industrial practice that the cripples may be utilized to their own and the community's good with the least shock to themselves or to the industries, and with the greatest amount of permanent benefit to all concerned. We have divided industrial opportunities suitable for cripples roughly, into three classes. First, such as already exist in the industries, which can be set aside for cripples only, present occupants being transferred to other work for which they can be fitted but which is not suitable for cripple work; second, opportunities in the industrial world that, through changes in the working equipment or tools, or through appliances attached to the cripple himself, can make the cripple a competitor of the sound worker; third, opportunities not existing at present in the industries, but which could be introduced for the good of the community, without placing the cripples into competition with any existing class of workers.
