Tuns truly remarkable machine was built on a preliminary scale in May, 1895. The first full-sized table was built by Mr. A. R. Wilfley, and was used in his own mill in Kokomo in May, 1896. The first table sold for installation was placed' in the Puzzle mill, Breckinridge county, in August, 1896. The mill enthusiasts at first hailed it as the cure for all the ills that flesh is heir to in the milling line. A little later it was found to make losses which were serious, and on this account the table succeeded only to a limited extent in displacing the vanners of the gold-mills. Still later, mill-men in a number of districts throughout the country made special studies of the faults of the machine, and devised a number of ways of grouping supplementary machines to overcome as far as possible the losses, and at the same time retain the benefit of the extraordinarily large capacity accompanied by the production of clean concentrates for which the machine has become so justly famous. I hope to make an exhibit of some of these methods in an appendix to my book on ore-dressing which is now in preparation. These experimenters have not written up the subject, and if they possess all the facts they have not given them out for the benefit of the mining profession at large. The object of this paper is to obtain the facts and to pre¬sent them so clearly that their bearing can be seen by all. To this end two complete series-'of tests have been planned. One (the present paper), to study concentration of galena in presence of quartz; the other (to follow shortly), to study concentration of chalcopyrite in presence of quartz. My. first paper, read at the Cobalt Meeting of the Institute,1 July, 1907, dealt with the behavior of a small Wilfley table when concentrating galena from quartz, the table being fed with natural products, with sized products; and with classified products. Since galena, having a specific gravity of 7.5, is among the heaviest minerals ordinarily concentrated by Wilfley table, it was desirable that a similar set of tests upon a mineral of, lighter weight should be made. Chalcopyrite, of a specific gravity of 4, would have been the best mineral for this purpose, on account of its great importance as an economic mineral, but in carrying out the test, however, I was obliged to content myself with a cupriferous pyrite, the specific gravity of which was 4.68 and the contents in copper 8.80 per cent. Through the kindness of Mr. H. 0. Cummins, this material was obtained from Shasta, Cal.,in very pure, clean, homogeneous condition. It was broken by rolls to 2 mm. in size, taking care to make a minimum of slimes. The quartz used to mix with it was pure, white, New England quartz, broken in the same way to the same size. In studying the accompanying tables, it should be borne in mind that the material concentrated was of low copper-content, and in many cases the quantity fed to the machine was 1 kg: or less.. As a consequence of the smallness of the 'quantity treated it was very difficult to adjust the table and get it in condition to do its best work before the feed became exhausted, and for this reason many results were obtained which appear irregular.

TAKEN in all its bearings there is, perhaps, no more interesting coal-field than that locally known and designated as " Wilmington," both on account of the superior qualities of its product as a house- hold and steam fuel, when compared with other Illinois coal, and its geological position. The territory underlaid with coal, to which this name was originally given, embraced a very small area, including only the south half of sections 31 and 32 (township 33 north, range 9 east) in Wilmington township, and sections 5, 6, 7, 8, 17, 18, 19, 30, and 31, with occasional outliers in sections 3, 4, and 9, and, possibly, in sections 20, 28, 29,30, and 32 (township 32 north, range 9 east) of Reed township, in Will County, comprising eleven square miles of workable coal within the known basin. WHEN a new type of equipment revolutionizes methods of quarrying one kind of stone, producers of other kinds focus their attention on its potentialities in their particular fields. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the accomplishments of the wire saw in slate, to show its more limited attainments in other kinds of stone, and to point out the possibili-ties of much wider application. A wire saw consists of a 3/16-in. or 1/4-in. three-strand wire cable that runs as a belt and cuts the rock by abrasion. (Fig. 1.) The teeth of the saw are sand grains carried in the grooves between the strands.

THE wire saw is a tool not less than 60 years old, probably nearer 100 years old. It was developed in Europe and is reputed to have originated in Belgium. Frombold is said to be the original patentee. [ ] Wire sawing equipment, as indicated in Fig. I, is very simple. It consists of a three-strand wire cable, usually 3/16 or 1/4 in. in diameter, or a single flat ribbon of medium hard, tough, alloy steel twisted into a helix of those diameters, made to form an endless belt of any length up to several thousand feet. The wire is guided into the cut by sheaves mounted in slides on steel columns situated close to either end of the cut. The feed motion usually is controlled either by gravity or by hand-operated feed screws. The steel columns or "standards" range from 15 to 30 ft. in length. At the top is a swiveled arm supporting a sheave similar to the traveling sheave below. Immediately under the swivel-mounted sheave is a guy plate or collar with shackles attaching four chain or wire-rope guys with suitable tightening devices, or with two guys and two jack legs for supporting the standard vertically or at any desired angle. The usual drive is by a 10-hp. motor through a gear reducer, on which are mounted two grooved sheaves, one of which is keyed and the other free running on the shaft. THE Wisconsin. Zinc District, or the Upper Mississippi Lead and Zinc District as it is often called, lies in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, in, Grant, Iowa and Lafayette Counties, and it includes adjoining parts of Illinois and Iowa. The district is about 70 miles long, north and south, and about 40 miles wide, east and west. It lies wholly within what is geologically known as the non-glaciated area of the Upper Mississippi Valley. HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT The district was first opened up as a lead producer in 1822. From this time until 1860, about 205,000 tons of cog lead (galena) and washed lead (galena) was produced from shallow crevices and openings. From 1860 to 1900, about 74,500 tons was produced, and since that time, from 5000 to 7000 tons has been produced annually. Since-1900, most of the lead concentrate produced has been as a byproduct of the zinc mines. The first zinc ores were mined about 1862. These were the carbonate ores, locally known as " drybone." Very little zinc blende was mined in the district, previous to 1875. The zinc blende ores mined from 1875 to 1900 were mostly of the high-grade, hand-cobbed, sheet-ore class, which usually contained from 45 to 60 per cent. metallic zinc. Such nines as the "Sallie Waters," ? Quinlin," "Lead Mine," "Benton Blende" and "Ida Blende," located near Benton, Wis., were mines which produced ores of this type, during this period. The mines located at Highland, the "Coker Mine" located at Livingston, Wis., and the "Opencut Mine" located at Shullsburg, Wis., were mines that were heavy zinc carbonate producers, previous to 1900.

W: 0. HOTCHKISS, Madison, Wis. (written discussion*).-Mr. George's paper on. "The Wisconsin Zinc District" is a very complete and clear description, which it is a pleasure to read. His discussion of the origin of the ores is the least satisfactory part, and Mr. George correctly states present knowledge when he begins his paragraph on a origin with the words "the general supposition is, etc." There is still much to be learned regarding the details of the processes by which the ores have reached their present situation. In this the Wisconsin district differs not at all from other mining districts. It is my hope that Mr. George and others, equally clear-thinking, who are in close touch with these operations will be able at an early date to give us more information on this subject.

INTRODUCTION THE Wisconsin zinc district, or the Upper Mississippi lead. and zinc district as it is also termed, lies in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin, and embraces adjacent portions of Illinois and Iowa. It includes Iowa, Grant, and Lafayette counties in Wisconsin, and Jo Davies county in Illinois. In Iowa, Dubuque formerly produced considerable lead, but there has been little mining there in recent years. The map, Fig. 1, shows the entire district, with roads, railways, streams, and the various towns, or "camps," around Which the mines. are clustered. The hatchwork indicates the areas iii which lead and zinc have been mined. The district is about 60 mi. (96 km.) north and south and about 40 mi. (64 km.) east and west. Not all of the territory is mineral bearing, and there are considerable areas that are believed to be barren. The grouping of the mines is patchy and irregular, though certain broad zones of mineralization extend almost the full width of the district, as from Mineral Point west through Mifflin and Livingston, and from Shullsburg west through New Diggings and Hazel Green. It is worth noting that the best mines of the district have, to date, been found within 10 mi. east or west of the fourth principal meridian line, thus lying within a long, narrow, north-and-south belt extending the length of the district. In a field as large as the Wisconsin, which has only within com-paratively recent time been worked intensively for zinc, the. chances are good for, opening new and important orebodies in parts of the district not yet, or insufficiently, prospected. However, the prospecting has been most successful around, or adjacent to, the old lead diggings of nearly a century ago, and the camps that were well known then are still centers of activity. In their order of importance they are: New Diggings, Benton, Mifflin-Livingston, Galena, Linden, Hazel Green, Shullsburg, and Highland.

J: H. POLHEMUS, New York, N. Y. (written discussion*).-The Joplin .mining and milling practice has largely influenced operating methods in the Wisconsin district. Milling equipment is essentially of the same type with the notable exception that no tables are used. The treatment of the flue 'sands has been attempted several times but without commercial success. Table material coming from any one mill is low both in tonnage and zinc content. The iron is comparatively high as the pyrite-line "chat" is much more prevalent than the zinc-lime attached particle. In the finer sizes the zinc occurs mainly as free mineral. These condi-tions make the production of good-grade table concentrates very diffi-cult. The accompanying tabulated results from several mill tests indi-cate the character of the mill tails. I think the average mill tails in the district assay nearer 1.5 per cent. zinc than under 1 per cent., as stated by Messrs. Boericke and Garnett.

(written discussion *) .-As it is impossible to spare the time for a lengthy discusson of this excellent paper, I am dwelling only on points where either the information is not clear or opinion differs radically from that of the authors. On page 1218, relative to oil rock, the authors state that the presence of oil rock is always taken as a favorable indication of proximity to ore. As thick, highly carbonaceous, oil rock has been found quite often in isolated patches outside of the district proper, the mere presence of oil rock is not always an indication of the propinquity to ore deposits. Regarding glass rock, I agree with the authors, that, generally speak-ing, sphalerite in the glass rock is spotty; however, they fail to mention that nearly all mines contain more or less ore in the glass rock, the usual location being near the toe of the pitch. On page 1220, they say that disseminated deposits are only found in, or close to, the oil rock. To refute this statement, I refer them to a typical disseminated deposit situated at the Adam and Eve shaft of the Frontier Mining Co. This deposit is located in the central horizon of the Galena dolomite, that is, in those sedimentaries containing flint nodules. Perfect crystals of sphalerite are found disseminated through-out the rock, and are commonly known by the miners as strawberry jack. I believe all top runs, or upper deposits as described above, should be classed as disseminated; physically the ore makes its occurrence in just such a manner.

Since the annual meeting held in February, 1917, when the Woman's Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E., was formed, the work of organization, which of necessity must be slow, has steadily gone forward. Under the Chairmanship of Mrs. C. C. Burger of the Welfare Committee, three active sub-committees have been formed: that of Americanization; under Mrs. Levi Holbrook, who is eminently fitted for such a position, by her active and valuable work in a number of the fine patriotic societies of our country; the Belgian Relief Committee, under Mrs. Henry H. Knox, which has clone phenomenal work in the three months of its existence, and whose report is later given in detail; and the Emergency Committee under Mrs. Herman A. Prosser, which has a fund already established, and is. in close touch with Major Arthur S. Dwight, ready to act when necessity arises. The officers of the Auxiliary feel more than gratified at the response so far received, and in a later issue will print extracts from letters, if permission can be gotten from the writers, showing the interest and enthusiasm that have beer aroused by the formation of a Woman's Auxiliary. Answers have even come from far Korea "the hermit nation," from Australia, from South America, showing what a bond of sympathy and, helpfulness is in process of growth. It is our sad duty to announce the death of our Treasurer, Mrs. George D. Baryon, who, from the very inception of our plan to organize, was an inspiring and valuable co-worker. Her place will be difficult to fill. Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight is Acting Treasurer at present. The Auxiliary wishes to express its heartiest thanks to Mr. Stoughton, the genial and efficient Secretary of the A. I. M. The Belgian Relief Committee has sent out the following letter to the ten local sub-committees, which were formed to raise money to feed the Belgian children: "The Commission for Relief in Belgium announced in a letter from Mr. Hoover that after the first of June the United States Government would take over the relief of Belgium and Northern France and called attention to the following paragraph: ?Naturally, having built up such an effective organization you will desire to keep it alive as far as possible, and we venture to suggest that, although the general relief of the countries involved will now be met by the Government appropriations, emer-gencies and special conditions may arise which could only be met by private donations. The meeting of the Institute at St. Louis brought together many members of the Women's Auxiliary, and Mrs. Philip N. Moore, who was nominated as the Director for the St. Louis Section, took the occasion formally to inaugurate the organization in that district. A meeting was held at the Planters Hotel, anti after discussion as to, the aims and objects of the. Auxiliary, officers were nominated for the' Section; the meeting then adjourned for two days, to he resumed in Joplin.. Here a very successful meeting was held, at which the Vice-Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer were elected. A great deal of interest was arouse under the able directorship of Mrs. Moore the St. Louis Section is likely to become a large and active organization. The president of the Women's Auxiliary, in opening the meetings, told the ladies present of the inauguration of-the-Society in February, 1917, and of the work which had been accomplished up to date. She told how the Society devotes itself to patriotic and humanitarian work along lines acceptable and interesting to the Mining Engineer, standing always alongside and behind the men of the profession. The Central Welfare Committee of the organization has three Sub-Committees: Foreign Relief, Emergency, and Americanization, and under one or other of those heads most of the work of the' Society has been done. Mr. Hoover was responsible for the inception of the Foreign Relief Committee, as its first work was the collection of funds for the supplementary meals for the Belgian Children. Under the energetic administration of Mrs. H. Knox, this sub-committee raised $12,100 in the period between the February meeting and the Declaration of war by the United States, when our government took over the entire duty of feeding starving Belgium. The organization of the Belgian Relief Committee, as it was styled, still remains, but the members are now asked to take up the question of relief in France. The President, Mrs. S. J. Jennings suggested at the St. Louis meetings that one way of working for the foreign relief alight be that all the members of the Auxiliary should, during the period of the war, forego all giving' and receiving of Christmas presents, except those they have been accustomed to give to the poor or in charity, and those they would give to the men in the services of the United States; that the money usually spent on the Christmas gifts should be put into a fund to be sent abroad for the fatherless children of France, as a gift from the families of the Institute. A good deal of discussion followed this proposal, as some of the ladies felt that children should have their Christmas gifts as usual. The Director of the Section emphasized the truth that the Christmas spirit was the .spirit of giving and sacrifice, and that no sacri-

IN my opinion, the concentration of minerals by flotation is the most interesting problem in ore-dressing, and will command eventually far more consideration than it has at present. For many ores it furnishes a complete method of concentration absolutely independent of specific gravity, and thus simplifies the milling of many difficult combinations. Not having to recognize the influence of specific gravity, we are also able to dispense with some of the complications resulting from classifying-conditions. Where flotation cannot be used for a complete separation of the minerals from the gangue, it will be found, in nearly all cases, to save those portions which are generally lost by reason of their fine state of division. For this reason, it should be looked upon mainly as an aid to general concentration, although there are many ores so well adapted to flotation that more than 90 per cent. of the valuable metals can be recovered from them in one operation by this process. In presenting the results of my investigations in. flotation, I have endeavored to theorize as little as possible. That side of the subject has been extensively discussed by others. My earliest work with flotation was done in 1895, when I used various oils, grease, soap, etc., with results that were remarkable. I did not realize then that with water alone equally good separations could be made. Up to 1906, my endeavors were confined to attempts to keep the concentrates on the tables well wetted and away from exposure to the air. In common with others, I observed that when there was any obstruction in. the wash-water on the table of sufficient size to divert the water to either side, the concentrates collected, and, on exposure to the air, would promptly float away. This convinced me that the sulphides were all good " swimmers," and that if,

A GENERAL awakening of interest among mill men concerning the mechanical efficiencies of their crushing machines is evident from a perusal of the recent files of mining publications. Considering the large part of the power bill which must be debited to the crushing department, such. interest is natural. When, however, the articles on the subject are read, the only statement upon which the writers agree is that fine grinding consumes a large amount of power, and that the machine which, from a concentration standpoint, offends as a slime producer is, for that reason, a serious offender in wasting power. When the mill man attempts to find a method for measuring the power wasted, or to compare the efficiency of one machine with that of another for the same work, he is confronted with a choice of methods which lead to conflicting results. There are two reasons why the work of crushing is not more generally understood. In the first place, experimental data are difficult to obtain; and in the second place, before these data can be put in general form certain assumptions must be made. A difference in these assumptions by different investigators has led to conflicting conclusions. This conflict has resulted in the proposal of two laws. The first of these is the so-called Rittinger's law, which is variously stated as follows: . "The work of crushing is proportional to the reduction in diameter."-R. H. Richards: Ore Dressing, p. 304 (1903). "The Work required to crush rock is very nearly proportional to the reciprocals of .the diameters crushed to."-A. AT the request of the Council of the Institute, I have the honor to submit the following remarks upon the Program of Tests under which the current work of the Watertown Arsenal Testing Laboratory is carried on, which comprises, among other items, the tests of steel ingot metal and derivative shapes. The intended scope of the tests may be illustrated by extracts from the descriptive part of the program as submitted by the Laboratory under date of April 17, 1907, and subsequently approved by the Chief of Ordnance, U. S. A. Under Item 1, Ingot Metal-Open hearth, acid and basic; Bessemer, acid and basic; crucible; fluid compressed and uncompressed-descriptive remarks were made as follows ; " A thorough, fundamental inquiry into the physical properties of steel necessarily begins with the ingot metal. Investigations, having for their object the improvement of steels, should also begin with the ingot. A knowledge of the ingot structure is essential for judging of the subsequent behavior or appearance of the metal. Under ordinary conditions, so little information is obtained from the ingot in individual cases that practically none of importance is acquired. These remarks have particular reference to the state of physical and structural soundness of the steel. Questions of chemical composition, segregation, piping and the grosser cavities have frequently been given attention. Defects of continuity of structure, which manifest themselves in the working; of the metal, and at the final stages cause distrust in the finished forging, have generally been neglected. ? IN the sections, Figures 1, 2, and 3, are shown three crucibles that have been applied to substantially the same furnace, all the conditions having been the same except a variation of one foot of bosh, and a slight variation in the angle of the same. The bosh of No. 3 was originally the same as No. 2, the additional foot in diameter being the result of three months' cutting. Beginning with No. 1, which was 5 feet 6 inches diameter, with tuyeres 5 feet 4 inches high, and cinder-tap four feet from bottom, great trouble was found in holding iron a proper length of time, four hours being the outside limit when working well, and two hours or less if working badly. The mineral industry of today is faced with a number of dilemmas, not the least of which grows out of the series of related facts-world mineral consumption is growing, and is expected to continue to grow; maintaining adequate capacity to meet needs will require very great capital investment over the next decades, investment which must be measured in billions of dollars; much of the new production must come from remote and relatively underdeveloped countries; many of the areas in which such development must take place are not areas in which private capital enters without some trepidation. There are real problems in financing new mineral development-problems which have occupied the thoughts of many in the industry. One group which is currently providing part of the answer, and perhaps pointing the way to further progress in the future, is the World Bank. Loans from the World Bank are arranged usually for countries which are attempting to develop their economies through expanded industrial production. More often than not they are for the development of electric power projects or transportation facilities. Although we consider the mineral industries to be basic factors in industrial development and very important factors in the early stages of development of a country, few of these loans are for mineral development-no more than a half dozen out of a total of well over 300 loans which have been granted to date. Yet the World Bank has played a far more important part in world mineral development than these figures would indicate. The few loans for mineral development which it has made are important, but of considerably greater importance are the secondary effects of many of the non-mineral development loans and some of the special services which the Bank also offers.

MANGANESE is one of the minerals which is principally consumed in countries other than those of origin. Nearly 85 per cent of the pro-duction is used by the United States, England, Germany and France, and roughly a third of the total is used by the United States alone. On the other hand, over 85 per cent of the world production comes from Brazil, Russia, India, the Gold Coast of Africa, and the Sinai Peninsula. It follows from this fact that practically all manganese moves across international boundaries in raw or alloy form, and much the larger part of this movement is for considerable distances and is ocean borne. There is no indication that any one of the principal consuming countries can develop even approximately adequate supplies of its own. Under abnormal war conditions, with high prices and changes in metal-lurgical methods, only 35 per cent of the needs of the United States was met from local sources, and under our recent tariff only 11 per cent. There are thousands of manganese deposits scattered about the world, but only a very few which can figure largely in supplying requirements on a modern scale. The known reserves, together with highly probable extensions and explora-tions now under way, indicate no shortage from a world standpoint for many decades to come. The production and marketing of manganese is going steadily into fewer and stronger hands. The steel in-dustry uses over 90 per cent of all the manganese mined, and is acquiring control of a considerable part of the production in all of the principal fields-the Germans in Nikopol, the English in India and Gold Coast, the Americans in Georgia, India, Gold Coast and Brazil.
