At the conclusion of my paper on the same subject read at the Boston meeting of the Institute, I offered to send some of sample No. 2 to any chemist who wished to analyze it. Eight chemists wrote to me for samples; so far I have received results from five. I give these results in a table (on the following page), together with the results previously obtained: As to the chemists and their methods : K is an iron-works chemist whom I only know by correspondence; lie writes: "No. 27(13.64) was obtained by the method I generally use, as follows : Dissolve 0.8 grams spiegel in hydrochloric acid and a little potassium chlorate, in a half-liter flask. Boil off most of the acid, add ammonia in slight excess, redissolve in acetic acid, using rather more than is really necessary, and then add 8 or 10 grams of sodium acetate and make up to the mark with warm water. Boil hard for fifteen minutes, then allow to settle (cool?), until the liquid reaches the mark, and withdraw 300 C.C. of the nearly clear liquid. Add to this an excess of hydrochloric acid, evaporate to dryness, take up with hydrochloric acid and water, and separate the iron by two precipitations with ammonia (I have often tested the ferric hydrate for manganese, but have never found any, if the separation by ammonia was properly made). Finally, precipitate the manganese as phosphate." Nos. 28, 29 (13.35, 13.07) were by Ford's method." No. 30 (13.50) was by Troilus's method He writes, " I may add the results are quite as good as I expected, although for any element except manganese, they are not close enough for anything like accurate work." This name is applied to the present mining law, as enacted in 1872 and since, to indicate its leading characteristic—in which it differs from all previous mining laws of this or any other country. The earlier act, passed in 1866, was practically the first attempt of Congress to deal with the question of mining titles upon the public domain. It was framed after nearly twenty years of acquiescence on the part of the Government in the self-constituted tribunals, officials, rules, and customs of the mining districts. In its recognition of these, and in several other particulars, the act of 1866 was open to serious criticisms. It is the purpose of this paper, not to trace the history of legislation on this subject, or show in detail what were the faults of the earlier law, but rather, by a discussion of certain aspects of the present law, to point out how great a revoluition it has effected in the rights of mining locators, and to indicate some of the difficulties attending its application. In the attempt to correct the vagueness of the act of 1866 an entirely new elernent was introduced into the law, bringing with it a new set of difficulties. Under the act of 1866 and the miners' customs which it followed, the lode was the thing claimed and subsequently acquired by patent. And the claim to a given number of feet on the longitudinal course of the lode was rooted in 'a discovery of any part of the lode in any part of the claim. ("Extensions" could in many districts—perhaps universally—be located and claimed on the strength of the discovery in the principal claim to which they referred; but this is a point not essential to the present discussion.) It was not necessary to find the outcrop or the upper edge of a lode in order to lay a valid location upon it. An explorer, sinking a shaft and intersecting a lode not already discovered and claimed by another, could claim by that discovery the number of feet along that lode which the local laws might permit (not exceeding the maximum set by the United States statute) whether his sur-

MR. Theodore D. Rand has made some interesting observations on the serpentines of Chester and Delaware counties, Penna., in which he suggests that the outcrops of this rock are detached from each other, and that while a comparatively narrow belt, running nearly east and west, mill include them all, the strike of each outcrop differs considerably from the direction of this narrow belt; and that it results that these isolated exposures exist on the map, as it were, in echelon, the easternmost end of each lying northwest of the western extremity of its neighbor. As he elsewhere remarks, this is important, if established, and the writer spent a day or two recently on the ground in the study of this phenomenon. One thing would seem to follow from such a state of facts, viz., that this serpentine at least must have been of secondary origin, for it is difficult to conceive of a rock which occurs intercalated in numerous horizons of a different formation, and agreeing with the latter in bedding, unless the former were an altered product of the latter. It is true that one might account for it by the supposition of an original unconformable deposit, which had been broken by a number of faults and distorted by throws to the northwest; but this hypothesis would do violence to the observed facts relating to the measures along with which the serpentine occurs, and in which no such distortion has been observed. * Thus for determining, by evaporative test, the calorific power of a coal, the ultimate constitution of which is known, it is requisite, that, besides the quantity of coal consumed and the weight of the water evaporated, the temperature and chemical composition of the escaping gases, or gaseous residue, shall be quantitatively determined, the same as solid residues of ash and unconsumed fuel. In observance of such requirements, the Heizversuchstation of Munich has been in operation since 1879. This consists of a permanent boiler plant, constructed on the principle of the calorimeter, with special provision for avoiding errors from loss of heat—snch, namely, as arise from radiation and conduction, and from the varying proportions of water in steam.—Muck. The section along the left bank of the Susquehanna, in Lancaster County, from Falmouth to the Maryland line, which the writer made in 1877 to accompany his report on that county, was redrawn by Professor Lesley, as stated in the prefatory'letter to Vol. CCC. (p. x.).* As then stated, neither the numerous data, nor the general features of the structure obtained by the writer, were changed ; but enough was done to make a discrepancy between the text and the section as given; and some important points were made less clear in the published section than they were in the MS. map. Amongst other portions of the section, that between the railroad stations, 1190 to 1224, gives the impression on the published maps of a much too definite superposition. A few words will be devoted to this region in the following communication. There is absolutely no room to doubt the structure for about four miles on .each side of the Tocquan axis. The dips are gentle, and in opposite directions, and the lithological characters constant within ordinary limits of variation, nor do these characters resemble those of the rocks which flank these gneisses and mica schists to the northwest and the southeast. For the same reasons it is evident that the rocks which occur within these eight miles or so, represent an horizon below the basement of the fossiliferous or palaezoic series. Early in the year 1875, some difficulty was experienced in the " Old blast-furnaces " of the Cambria Iron Company, at Johnstown, Pennsylvania, arising from the increased use of native coke, prepared in Belgian ovens near the furnaces, in mixture with Connellsville coke, in the production of Bessemer pig-iron. This was the more surprising at that time, because a very caulplete coal-crushing and washing apparatus, after the Bradford plan, had just been put into successful operation, affording a pure coal for coke-making. It was confidently expected that this thorough cleansing of the coal would improve the quality of the coke and fit it for the increasing manufacture of Bessemer pig-iron. But the trouble with the native coke continued. Experiments in fuel charges-increasing and reducing them—failed to correct the irregular working of these furnaces. Increasing the charge of native coke produced abnormal heat at the top of the furnace, reducing it cooled the furnace below. At this stage of affairs, the Hon. Daniel J. Morrell, general manager of the Cambria Iron Company, requested the writer to make the requisite investigation to determine the nature of this coke-difficulty, and to ascertain why the Johnstown coke could not be used in blastfurnace work as well as Connellsville. This task at first did not appear to present any special difficulties, but subsequently it expanded into proportions that caused no little anxiety. The first effort was directed to procuring average samples of Johnstown and Connellsville coke. At this period of the investigation, it was assumed that the whole matter could be intelligently solved by comparing the chemical analyses of the two cokes: Johnstown Coke. Connellsville Coke. TO recover the remaining ore tonnages along the south side of the Inspiration orebody, the company began open-pit operations in early 1948 in addition to underground mining. Due to the differences in elevation between the orebody and the existing ore handling and treating plants, the truck haulage operation is up hill. Road grades were established at 7 pct maximum.

From the start of production in 1915 until 1948, underground block caving operations accounted for all of the ore production of Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. Open pit development work began in 1947, and ore production from the open pit commenced in March 1948. Thus began the transition from underground to open pit mining which continued until August 1954. Since then, open pit mining has accounted for all ore production which presently averages 105,000 tons of ore and 75,000 tons of waste rock each week. Open pit mining operations at Inspiration is carried on in two separate pits-the Live Oak Pit and the Thornton Pit. The Live Oak Pit covers an area of approximately 1500x3000 ft and the Thornton Pit, 2500x2000 ft. The geographic centers of the two pits are 4000 ft apart and, at their nearest point, the surface slopes are 500 ft apart.

Tim history and efficiency of 40-ton capacity dump trucks for surface waste removal at the New Cornelia opencut copper mine, at Ajo, Ariz., are summed up in this paper. Tabulations of truck performance, together with detailed cost figures, prove the value of truck transportation for certain special operations at a large mine. Emphasis is given to the fact that truck transportation not only reduces the haulage costs but also reduces the breaking ground and shovel-loading costs per ton. The New Cornelia opencut copper mine is in the desert. The climate is ideal for seven months of the year, but the five summer months are uncomfortably hot. The elevation is 1820 ft. above sea level and the annual rainfall is approximately 6 inches. The ore body is a monzonite-porphyry deposit. The waste-rock capping consists of hard rhyolite, conglomerate and porphyry. All the material is hard and cannot be excavated without blasting. The rhyolite and conglomerate waste is very blocky. The weight of the rock in place is 2.16 tons per cubic yard. The average mine production per day is 22,000 tons of ore and 18,000 tons of waste rock, the latter consisting of surface rock and material within the ore body too low in grade to send to the concentrator. The rock is loaded by electric shovels with 4 1/2-cu. yd. dippers. The primary transportation of ore to the concentrator and waste to the dumps is by 30-yd. dump cars and oil-burning steam locomotives; therefore truck haulage of waste is a minor factor of the New Cornelia operation. However, as New Cornelia was one of the first mines to use large-capacity dump trucks for haulage, the results obtained are of interest. EQUIPMENT On the south side of the New Cornelia is a hill rising about 500 ft. above the normal surface elevation, roughly 1000 ft. in diameter at its base, called locally Arkansas Mountain peak. Exploratory drilling in this area developed additional ore that could be made accessible for open pit operation only by moving the mountain face a maximum distance of 400 ft. to the south. The slope of the mountain adjacent to the pit averaged 35°, and the small area involved precluded the use of train haulage for the removal of the 4,000,000 tons of waste estimated above the normal pit elevation. A study of dump-truck haulage at Boulder Dam and San Gabriel Dam led to the decision to use large-capacity end-dump trucks rather than smaller trucks, for the following reasons: I. The truck would have to withstand the impact of hard, heavy chunks, some of them weighing as much as 10 tons, which would be dumped from the 4 ½ -cu, yd. dipper. 2. The coarse, rocky, abrasive material would soon damage a light truck body. 3. The body of a small truck could not be efficiently loaded with coarse rock.

From time to time the mining engineer will be faced with the necessity of having to make a haulage study to determine not only the most suitable method of hauling material but also the most effective and economical type of equipment to use for his particular operation. Specifically, this chapter outlines a general description of various types of haulage units and their components, guidelines on the selection of equipment, material both operational and cost wise to be accumulated, discussions on the various factors involved in the development of the estimated production and cost analysis, examples of the above, and the necessary reference material. This material and examples are given in such a form as to permit the engineer to proceed on almost a step-by-step basis in the determination of the applicable haul speeds and other related portions of the haul cycle and resulting number of trips per hour. In recent years, the analytical methods used for the application of the various haulage units have undergone a considerable change. Several vehicle manufacturers and a few of the mining companies employ electronic digital computers to speed up the calculations and improve the accuracy of production estimating. The haulage computer program simulates the travel of the vehicle over the described haul roads by calculating incremental velocities, travel times, and travel distances from the known torque vs. speed characteristics of the vehicle. This is, in a sense, a numerical integration of the vehicle's performance and, of course, varies for each and every application. These travel times are then combined with easily estimated fixed times such as loading, turning and dumping, spotting, and any indicated delay times, resulting in a total cycle time for the vehicle. Usually, the travel times comprise the major portion of the time cycle; therefore, the concise computerized calculations eliminate much of the guess work in estimating vehicle productivity. THE past 20 years has seen a revolutionary change in the testing of materials at elevated temperatures. This has largely been brought about by the practical importance of the creep problem in the design of equipment for operation at high temperatures. The short-time tension test carried out at elevated temperatures has consequently assumed in many cases only a secondary role compared to the long-time creep test. In many problems, however, a knowledge of the short-time high-temperature properties of a metal is essential. To mention a few cases in which this is so, we might include all hot-forming operations such as rolling, forging, etc., the welding problem if residual stresses are to be computed, the development of new alloys for high-temperature service where, in the initial stages, time does not permit of long duration creep tests, and others. Usually a knowledge of the short-time properties is desired, if only to serve as a background against which to compare creep behavior. In conducting short-time high-temperature tests, it has been almost the universal practice to determine stresses based on the original area and strains referred to the original gauge length which is usually chosen as 2 in. It has been pointed out 1,2 that one of the reasons that the true significance of certain tensile properties is not understood, which perhaps curtails their usefulness, especially when the material is applied [ ] under conditions differing considerably from the test conditions, is that true physical stresses and strains are not determined. It is essential to have a knowledge of true stresses and strains in order to correlate the values present in the tension test with those existing, for example, in hot metal-forming operations and in the general problem of the yielding and failure of metals under combined stress conditions. Stress and strain values based on the original dimensions of the test piece do not exist physically except in the early stages of the test. Since at the present time there is very little information in the literature on true stress-strain relations in the short-time high-temperature tension test it is proposed in the following pages to describe a

Tsumeb has added a chapter to its absorbing history with the beginning of copper smelting operations this month. This development will be followed shortly by another one when lead smelting and refining plants go on the line next year. In our own milieu these events would be common- place enough (although a new lead smelter certainly would be cause for wonder), but in the sparsely settled remote regions of northern South West Africa they are a dramatic industrial expansion. They are also, however, a sound businesslike extension of policies which have marked the tenure of Tsumeb Corp. Ltd. The historical data given in Table I are a drab listing of factual bones without the corporeal splendor which should surround the denouement of the Tsumeb bonanza. When Sir Francis Galton traversed the country, his was an expedition which was in keeping with the then blooming era of heroic explorations. The Otavi highlands in the interior were unexplored and the reception of the natives uncertain. While the exploratory work was in progress during the turn of the century the Hottentots and Hereros were successively in open bloody rebellion. The suppression of these uprisings, particularly the Hereros, by German soldiers so decimated the tribes that a labor shortage ensued for many years, hampering the development of the colony. To these troubles may be added difficulties In obtaining mining supplies. However, there should have been no shortage of meat from wild game judging by conditions prevailing even today.

The Tucker Hill perlite deposit is located in the northwestern portion of the Devils Garden lava field in Lake County, south-central Oregon. The perlite occurs in the chill margin of a late Miocene composite rhyolite lava dome that exhibits distinct cooling zonation. The chill margin is composed of an outer glass envelope, which contains commercial-grade granular and vesicular perlite, and an inner glass envelope, which contains onionskin perlite of local commercial quality. Glassy rhyolite and rhyolite compose the lava dome core. The entire dome complex encompasses at least 5 km2 (2 sq miles). Expansion tests in commercial-scale furnaces indicate that the perlites are suitable for a wide range of applications and compare favorably with commercial perlite ores. The large tonnage deposit appears competitive for markets in the midwestern and upper northeastern states, and the Pacific Northwest of the US.

THE Seventh International Petroleum Exposition and Congress to be held in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 4 to 11, inclusive, in true western spirit promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Exposition has become an established institution. It gives opportunity to petroleum engineers, technologists, and operators to see each year at one place what the tool makers and machinery manufacturers have to offer which is new or better. It has truly become a place "where men, methods and machinery meet." It is also a convenient focus for technical meetings of various kinds devoted to petroleum and natural gas problems. 'The Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. has for several years held its chief fall meeting at Tulsa just preceding the opening of the Es- position. This year our meeting will be on Oct. 2 and 3 and it will be held as usual at Hotel Mayo. The Mid- Continent Oil and Gas Association will, as usual, hold a meeting during the Exposition and this year the Petroleum Division of the A. S. M. E. will hold a three- day session, Oct. 6-8, in the auditorium on the Esposition grounds. In all, six technical sessions are planned by this Society, and aside from reports of committees some 20 technical papers are to be presented. Members of the Institute should attend its own meeting and stay over for as many days as possible for the other meeting at which they will hear and see much of helpful interest.

THE ninth International Petroleum Exposition held at Tulsa, May 16-23, broke all size, sales, and attendance records of previous shows. More than $12,500,000 worth of equipment was on the grounds. There were 546 companies exhibiting and every available inch of the fifteen acres allotted to exhibit was taken. Drake Drive, the main street of the exposition, was literally "supply row" with National Supply, Frick-Reid, Continental Supply, Oil Well, Bridgeport, International Derrick and Equipment, and Parkersburg Rig and Reel companies occupying the entire space. The exhibitors were a cross section of American industry, with such firms, besides the strictly oil equipment firms, as the United States Steel Corp. and others allied to the oil industry, exhibiting. Between $10,000,000 and $15,000,000 of equipment is estimated to have been sold on the grounds during the exposition. Valuable contacts were made by the exhibitors with key oil men. Attendance passed the 175,000 mark for paid admissions in contrast with 154,000 for the eighth exposition in 1934. Visitors registered from Venezuela, Soviet Russia, India, Germany, Spain, Mexico, England, Canada, France, Colombia, Greece, West Indies, and Rumania. Hotels were overflowed and a housing bureau found rooms in private homes for thousands. Oil companies set up a schedule of shifts in order that as many of their field men might attend as possible. It is said that the companies want a two-weeks' show in 1938 so that more time will be avail-

The use of the centrifuge for dewaxing lubricating oils grew out of the effort to secure better results than had been attained by the common "cold settling" process. This process was the only known method for dewaxing steam refined cylinder stock (600" F. fire test), the product known as "bright stock" being commonlyused for building up "pressed," i.e., dewaxed neutrals of, say, 200-sec. viscosity [to a higher value. The process consisted of mixing the cylinder stock with approximately one and one-half times its volume of naphtha, heating, to dissolve completely all the oil and wax and then slowly chilling to about 15" F. in large insulated tanks. This caused the wax to precipitate. It was allowed to settle out by gravity. The supernatant liquid was then drawn off and the naphtha distilled off, leaving a still residue of bright stock. The sediment from the settling, of a slushy nature, was withdrawn. After removing the naphtha by distillation the residue was petrolatum. At some point in the process, preferably after the dilution but before chilling, the mixture was decolored by percolation through fuller's earth. The finished bright stock produced by this process had a cold test of about 50" F. Efforts to improve this by chilling to a lower temperature resulted in a considerable reduction in yield, and increased uncertainty of settling. Even when chilling to 15" F. it was not uncommon to find that after a week's waiting a tank had not settled. It was then necessary to heat and rechill. This uncertainty was a serious problem; in one case a refinery superintendent had men riveters hold pneumatic hammers against the tank for hours, hoping thus to cause agglomeration and settling of the wax. Yields of bright stock above 70 per cent, were uncommon. The centrifuge has come into general use in the oil fields and in the establishments where lubricating and fuel oils are used. Probably centrifugal machinery will be found more useful in the refinery when the operators are more familiar with'the principles of modern centrifuga-tion and when centrifugal engineers better understand the refinery emulsion problems. It is not generally realized that centrifugal force and gravity have two distinct functions: First, subsidence wherein the suspended globules are brought into contact; second, coalescence (when this is possible) by rupturing the films around the globules. In the case of a water-in-oil emulsion, an exercise of the former function alone would yield: (1) oil, free, or as free as desired, from water; and (2) a concentrated water-in-oil emulsion—concentrated in the sense that it contains a relatively large percentage of the internal phase. An exercise of both functions will yield: (1) water-free oil and (2) oil-free water. Centrifugal force is much better than gravity for subsidence because, in the case of industrial emulsions where the suspended globules are visible under a microscope, subsidence is directly proportional to the force applied. Centrifugal force is only slightly better than gravity for coalescence. A minute trace of a proper reagent will immediately do more to nullify the interfacial surface tension opposing coalescence than an indefinite application of the highest attainable centrifugal force. No mathematical analysis has been made to explain the failure of high centrifugal force to induce a decidedly more rapid and more complete coalescence than is obtained by gravity. The adjustment of the centrifuge rotor depends more on the extent of coalescence that is desired or is possible than on any other factor. One reason for this dependence is to be found in the curious relation between the specific gravity and the hydrostatic pressure of emulsions.
