The options of enhanced oil recovery, coal syncrude, and shale syncrude are compared by approximately equivalent economics. The physical constraints for the major enhanced oil recovery processes are described, followed by new estimates of cost. The range for all three options in terms of light syncrude equivalent are $22 to $40 per barrel in 1980 dollars.

Geophysical exploration for engineering purposes is conducted to decrease the risk in encountering site uncertainties. Such studies are needed in construction of underground facilities. Current responsibilities, opportunities and challenges for those with geophysical expertise are defined. These include: replacing the squiggly line format, developing verification sites for method evaluations, applying knowledge engineering and assuming responsibility for crucial national problems involving rock mechanics expertise.

INTRODUCTION The committee on Rock Mechanics, Japanese Society for Civil Engineers, has been discussing 'soft rock engineering in Japan' and presented several papers concerning dam, tunnel, bridge and slope constructions to International Symposium on Weak Rock, Tokyo 1981. This is the summarized paper based on References of Okamoto et a1 (1981), Iida et a1 (1981), Working Group on Tunneling-JSCE (1981), Working Group on Bridge Foundations-JSCE (1951) and Kikuchi et a1 (1981), which can convey general view on engineering experiences with weak rocks in Japan. From the point of view to the origin and/or distinctive physical properties, weak rocks in Japan may be classified into (1) sedimentary, (2) weathered, (3) low welded-pyroclastic and (4) fractured ones. Their typical characteristics are summarized in the following section. Concerning dam foundations on soft rock, several hundreds have already been constructed and, at present, nearly one hundred are under construction or at planning stage. These dams, almost without exception, have some problems such as site selection, material selection for fill-type and concrete dams, design of dam and its foundation, and construction procedures, requiring special ingeneous and cautious measures to cope with the local geotechnical difficult situations. In tunneling, for the decade of 1970s, the number of tunnels in soft rock either completed or under construction was at least 160, including Seikan Tunnel of 53.9 km long, Nakayama Tunnel of 14.8 km long and so on. SUMMARY. The supports account for over 501 of the total expenditure for a longwall face. The success and economics of a face depend upon the optimum selection of type and density of the supports. Empirical solutions involving uncertain safety factor are replaced by a geo-mining approach developed at OMRS in which the support resistance is defined by the stability index of the roof rock mass and the failure pattern of the immediate roof. The paper gives the methodology adopted to define the support resistance for Alkusha colliery longwall face of Jharia coalfield (India). The stability index of the roof mass varied from 218 to 520 for the individual beds and 1100 to 1374 for the immediate roof mass. The exact support resistance for the condition was found to be 42 t/m2.

This paper describes the production of a specific iron oxide pellet that has given very good and consistent results as feedstock for HYC-Process Direct Reduction Plants. The sponge iron originated from these pellets has been used for the economic production of almost 15 Mt of low carbon steel via electric arc furnace meltshops. An overview of mining, beneficiation, pelletizing, direct reduction and steelmaking for this case is given with emphasis on the charactertitics of the self-fluxing oxide pellets.

Mechanical properties of the nether roof rocks play a substantial role in maintenance of mine openings. On longwall faces too low strength is a cause of rock- falls which bring about delays in face advance, and hazard to the miners, while too high strength may result in over hanging of roof rocks in gobs, sometimes over a large area, initiating dynamic periodical pressures. Hence, efforts have been undertaken to develop methods of caveability evaluation for proper selection of roof control system and of longwall-face supports. DESCRIPTIVE CLASSIFICATIONS One of the basic qualitative criteria for classification of roof types with different caveability is the criterion of geological structure. The 26-stages scale worked out for conditions of Donetz Coalfield. USSR, by E.T. Proyavkin et al.(l) may be an example of that type of classification. This scale is presented graphically in Fig. 1. The first types of roofs according to this scale are easily caving immediately after exposure of a small surface, while the last be- long to the strongest roofs which over-hang in waste and require artificial fracturing. Observations and measurements carried out also in Donetz mines lead W.T. Davidyanc (2) to following classification: Class I - weak and densely bedded rocks very easily caving after each advance of supports. The roof subsidence over a waste edge is: [ ] where: h is roof subsidence, m M is thickness of the seam being mined, m S is width of an opening, m Class II - medium caveability and small main roof movements [ ] Class III - hardly breakable rocks, thicker beds with higher strength: caving by large blocks. After exposure of larger roof surfaces the movements of the main roof strata may affect an opening. [ ] Class IV - very hardly breakable rocks - thick, monolithic sandstones: they cause considerable difficulties in working with caving. [ ] Class V - thin-bedded rocks featured by the capacity of a smooth subsidence without disintegration into loose blocks with keeping contact between the particular blocks in a bed. In this classification mining with full roof caving is recommended for class I-III and only exceptionally for class IV. In many coal fields, qualitative and quantitative observations of roof rocks behavior have been carried out: as a result relations and characteristics found in certain mines are given. As an example, Kizielov Coalfield data in the USSR given by B.S. Vinokur (3) may be mentioned. In working thin pitching seams man- less system of undercutting the seam by means of rope saw is used there. The author separated four classes of roofs and gave, for every class, the empirical relation between the extracted area and the time of roof stability. The size of the stable area of exposed roof for particular classes is as follows: 120 to 150 m2 (1291 to 1614 ft2 ), 170 to 200 m2 (1829 to 2152 ft2), 250 to 280 m2 (2690 to 3013 ft2 ) and 350 to 400 m2 (3766 to 4300 ft ). For Kuznetz coalfield in the USSR the following classification of roofs was developed at the WIMI Institute in Leningrad: Class I - completely unstable: impact strength in- dex of rock f = up to 1.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 it) wide, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable during the time not longer than 5 min. Class II - low stability: f = 1.5 to 2.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 ft) wide and up to 4.0 m (13 it) long, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable during 5 to 20 min. Class III - medium stability: f = 2.51 to 3.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 it) wide and 4.0 to 25 m (13 to 82 ft) long, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable from 20 min. to 2 hours. Class IV - stable: f = 3.51 to 4.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 ft) wide and 25 m (82 it) long exposed after shearer's cut is stable during the time longer than 2 hours. In 1970, the federal Clean Air Act was passed, promulgating limits on the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from large stationary sources that would affect local air quality. The brunt of this regulation was felt by the electric utility industry, especially those units generating electricity with coal-fired boilers. The law hastened development of a new industry, flue gas desulfurization (FGD), which is composed of three major segments: the electric utility, the FGD equipment suppliers (the scrubbing modules), and the scrubbing chemical suppliers. Dravo's experience suggested the equipment end of the business, but market analysis recommended investigating the chemical processes involved in the removal of the SO2 gas. This resulted in the formation of Dravo Lime Co. to manufacture and market reagents to the FGD industry. This paper will briefly describe the Thiosorbic lime scrubbing process and review Dravo's innovative mine and calcining facility.

Modern vibrating screening dates from about 1910 at which time the forerunner of the present day two bearing and four bearing circular motion inclined vibrating screens were first introduced. These simple machines consisted of a screen box holding some kind of a screening surface to which was attached an off-center shaft or a shaft with an off-center weight which was rotated. The rotation of these shafts caused a shivering motion to the screen box and produced the first vibrating screen. In the 1920's and early 30's, the box designs were improved and the mechanisms designs were also improved and by 1940, vibrating screens were an important part of most process plants. In the early days when the screen sizes were dictated by how much could be shoveled onto the screen box and by the force that a particular mechanism could produce, not much thought was given to the proper sizing of the particular units. As mechanism and body design improved the ability to predict vibrating screen capacity at various openings became more important. In the late 1930's, a set of empirical capacities came to be used. with few modifications, these capacities are still in use today, both by those companies that use a formula involving only the amount of fine material in a feed, and by those companies using a formula in which the total feed to a particular screen is used. In either method of calculation, the empirical values are based on these ideal conditions: (1) The material being fed to the screen contains 25% oversize. (2) The feed to the screen contains 40% half size material. (3) The material has a bulk density of 1.6 T/Cu.M. (100 lbs/cu.ft.). (4) The screening surface has an open area of 50%. (5) The material is dry, free flowing and relatively cubical. (6) The maximum screening efficiency required is between 90 and 95%. It is obvious that these conditions do not occur in natural or crushed size distributions. Therefore, modifications must be made to these empirical values to allow for the calculation of a vibrating screen for a particular set of conditions. Current scale-up procedures are discussed critically, including: constant specific energy criterion; determination of mill size and power for a given ore, throughput and mesh of grind; specification of operating speed and loading. A major dynamic and kinetic factor now recognized is that the ratio of media rotational flow to ore axial flow, and the number of mill revolutions that ore is subjected to during residence, both diminish as mill diameter increases. These factors can lead to capacity limitations when mill diameters reach a critical range, especially regarding coarse sizes. Experience at the Bougainville and Pinto Valley operations is contrasted. Corrective measures suggested are to reduce loading and increase speed towards the Davis best operating speed.

This paper describes the results of an underground coal mine trial installation of a shielded trailing cable. The cable was a three conductor, round, type SHC-GC and was installed on a shuttle car in a conventional room-and-pillar mining section. The purpose of the study was to evaluate proposed legislation that would require shielding on low-voltage trailing cables. Such legislation would require machine modifications to cable reels, packing glands, and couplers; increase cable splicing complexity; and necessitate additional splicing materials and training. Furthermore, fault location might be more difficult. Even though shielding will cause some problems for the mine operator, it can reduce electrical shock hazard to mine workers. This paper presents information that mine operators can use to solve most of the problems encountered if they are required to install shielded cables. The in-mine evaluation was funded by the US Bureau of Mines; however, the views and conclusions in this paper are those of the author and should not be interpreted as necessarily representing official policies of the US government.

This paper is intended to provide an improved understanding of natural draft (natural ventilating pressure) and the effect of natural draft on underground mine ventilation circuits. Attention is focused on measurement of natural draft pressures during ventilation surveys in mechanically ventilated mines and on different methods for modeling natural draft using the measured data. A number of examples are presented which utilize data collected during absolute air pressure surveys made by personnel of the Ventilation Division of the Mine Safety and Health Administration's Safety and Health Technology Center, Denver, Colorado. Examples are used to illustrate how the data from absolute air pressure surveys may be interpreted to determine whether natural draft pressure is present and what its magnitude is. In addition, two different methods are described for mathematically estimating the magnitude of the natural draft pressure. Comparisons are made of results obtained using the different methods. Different procedures are described for modeling natural draft using the MSHA-modified Penn State computer program. Use of the routines is described and illustrated relative to drafts that aid or oppose the mechanical ventilation system. Tabulations of results facilitate comparison of outcomes obtained using the different modeling procedures.

The value of industrial rocks and minerals produced in New Mexico in 1978 exceeded $227 million. The state ranked first in the nation in production of potash and perlite and was a leader in pumice production. Other commodities with sizable production in New Mexico include barite, caliche, clay, dimension stone, fuorspar, gypsum, humate, limestone, mica, salt, sand and gravel, scoria, and silica sand. Non-metallic resources are distributed throughout the state, but development and exploitation is concentrated in western and southeastern New Mexico. The value of industrial rocks and minerals within the state grew about 9% to more than $227 million in 1978. Continued growth, however, depends on continued demand, exploration, and development.

INTRODUCTION As the world's population expands and nations struggle to better their relative position and standard of living, increased emphasis is being directed to the exploration and production of mineral resources, to the mitigation of natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and to geotechnical engineering projects such as high-level nuclear waste disposal, underground military facilities, and transportation tunnels. Several topics are common to all of these endeavors. One is the characterization of the rock mass in situ, including the definition of the initial environment (e.g., temperature, stress, etc.). A second is, depending upon the use of the underground or the desired result, the manner in which the boundary conditions or the environment are to be changed by man. Next, the physicochemical behavior of the rock mass must be measured, or inferred with uncertainty limits placed on this behavior, over the appropriate range of environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, chemistry, etc.) for the application proposed. And last, an appropriate, validated predictive model must be applied to estimate the rock mass response to the perturbation. In the period preceding about 1955, only relatively simple testing of soils and rocks was commonplace, partly because the environment (depth) to which these data were applied was not so extreme as it is at present and partly because less precise predictions of material response were acceptable. Only limited and relatively simple test data seemed to be needed to guide the engineering. At the present time and certainly in the future, as we extend our interaction with the earth's crust to greater depths and impose more extreme perturbations on it, we need a larger body of data, deter- mined under much more complex conditions, in order to make the required predictions. INTRODUCTION Grinding control is currently the most publicized control subject in the minerals industry. Flotation control and crushing control have not as yet received the widespread attention that grinding control has. The primary reasons for this center around the high capital costs of grinding equipment and the fact that grinding mills are extremely energy inefficient. In a typical copper concentrator the energy requirements to produce refined copper are: (1) [Total Energy Distribution (Kw-hr/yr)% Mining4.93 x 10817.3 Mineral Processing9.63 x 10833.8 Smelting and Refining13.9 x 10848.9] One-third of the total energy used for copper production is for mineral processing. Unfortunately, size reduction operations are extremely inefficient. Efficiency calculations for grinding range from less than 0.1% to about 5% depending on the evaluation criteria. Because of these facts, grinding control has been and will continue to be the focus of major process control efforts. OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS All benefits achieved as the result of grinding control are derived from modifying physical parameters which improve the efficiency of the grinding mill. INTRODUCTION As part of a general project to simulate a concentrator, the Brenda Mines Limited secondary crushing plant, located near Peachland, B. C., was sampled during the summer/winter of 1975 and during the summer of 1978 to develop a digital crushing plant simulator specific to the Brenda operation. The purpose of this simulator was to study the influence of manipulable process variables on important responses, to permit study of alternative circuit configurations if desired and to perform off-line optimization. This chapter describes the methodology employed to develop the simulator (1,2) along with typical applications thereof. SECONDARY CRUSHING PLANT FLOWSHEET Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the Brenda Mines Ltd. secondary crushing plant circuit. The 41,000 tonne coarse ore stockpile(a) is -17.8 cm oversize (3B belt) from two 2.4 m x 6.1 m double deck vibrating screens (not shown). The screens are fed by 2 conveyor belts operated in series with two 198 cm apron feeders that handle discharge from a 152 cm x 226 cm primary gyratory crusher(520 KW). The primary crusher (not shown) treats up to 2725 tonne/hr of run of mine ore. Minus 1.9 cm undersize from the primary screens (#19 belt), referred to as the primary fines, joins secondary screen undersize (#18 belt) for conveyance to fine ore bins (not shown). Feed from the coarse ore stockpile is transferred by means of vibrating feeders and two 120 cm conveyors (#6 and #7) to transfer belts #8 and #9 (Figure 1). The belts feed two secondary 2.1 m standard heavy duty cone crushers (bl and b2). Each crusher is equipped with a modified coarse mantle liner and a standard coarse bowl liner. Mantle throw is 9.2 cm; nominal close side set is 3.2 cm. Crusher .countershafts (443 rpm) are driven by single 260 KW synchronous motors (710 rpm). Discharge from the secondary cone crushers joins discharge from four 2.1 m tertiary heavy duty shorthead cone crushers (fl, f2, f3 and f4). With the exception of the cavity (modified medium mantle liner and standard coarse bowl liner; close side set is nominal .84 cm) and motor (224 KW), these machines are similar to the secondary crushers. The combined discharge is transferred from a 183 cm conveyor to #14 belt which empties into a 1452 tonne secondary screen surge bin (c). Vibrating feeders beneath the bins feed five 2.4 m x 6.1 m double deck vibrating screens (dl, d2, d3, d4 and d5) sloped at 200 from the horizontal. The development of microcracking with progressive strain through failure in an orthoquartzite has been studied by means of optical and electron microscopy of specimens deformed experimentally at 200 MPa confining pressure, 20°C. Microcrack maps and statistics have been prepared. The rock fails through the development of arrays of microcracks which form around grain boundaries and are initiated at notches on pore spaces. No special microstructural characteristic appears to be associated with the peak strength, and axially oriented cracks do not begin to develop until well past the strength peak. Axial microcracking is a precursor to shear fault localization. Because most cracks form in highly shear stressed orientations, it is inferred that most of the work done in rupturing the rock is against the frictional forces on crack surfaces. An attempt is made to integrate the work done in this way, to compare it with the work done by the external forces.

The response of feldspar flotation to tallow diamine dioleate collector in the presence of sulfuric acid is studied using batch flotation experiments. Application of this nonhydrofluoric acid (non-HF) reagent system in the flotation of mineralogically and chemically different feldspar ores is compared with that of the conventional hydrofluoric acid system. The dependence of flotation recovery and concentrate grade on feed particle size distribution, conditioning time, pulp density, and pH, combined variation of collector and acid addition rates, sodium hydroxide concentration in the collector solution, and initial pulp pH Prior to conditioning is studied. The results have been discussed in relation to applicability of the non-HF system to plant trials, and the nature of the collector adsorption in the selective flotation of feldspar.

Plate loading tests which use surficial loading of a rock mass are employed quite extensively for the determination of in situ deformability characteristics of rock masses. The cable jacking method is essentially a surficial plate load test in which the test load is provided by reaction against a cable anchored at some depth below the rock surface. The results of the test are usually evaluated within the framework of the classical theory of elasticity to generate estimates for the bulk deformability properties of the rock mass. In the conventional evaluation of this test it is assumed that the test plate is rigid and that the embedded anchor load has no influence on the test plate settlement. The purpose of this paper is to examine the possible influences of the plate flexibility and the anchor load location on the effective settlement of the test plate. The variational estimates presented in the paper are valid for moderately flexible test plates which are characterized by a relative rigidity parameter Numerical results are developed in the form of correction factors that should be applied to the cable jacking results to arrive at the deformability characteristics of the tested rock mass.

INTRODUCTION Published laboratory procedures used by the major crusher manufacturers for estimating crusher size are based upon techniques developed in the mid 1940's. Specifically, the two largest U.S. crusher manufacturers are using the Bond impact procedure. Although the procedure is still in use, there is little confidence in the results. Unless the laboratory results fall within a preconceived range, personal experience is used for selecting the number of crushers and connected horsepower (Coleman, 1978). There have been numerous theoretical studies of the communition of particles. However, no procedure has been widely acclaimed for predicting crusher power requirements. Experimental studies have included breakage by slow compression, slow speed impact and high speed impact. Theoretical results have increased our knowledge of the comminution process, but the procedures have not been capable of analyzing the complex mechanism of industrial crushing machines. The purpose of this chapter is to review the empirical crushing procedures that have been used, including advantages and disadvantages. A new procedure which has been in development at Allis-Chalmers Corp. from 1977 to 1982 is detailed. Actual results of the new procedure on a concentrator feasibility study are included. EXPERIMENTAL GOALS The goals of a laboratory crushability procedure are accurate predictions of: (1) Rock crushability, measured as energy per unit mass. (2) Crusher product size analysis. A procedure capable of predicting these parameters should be inexpensive and require a minimum amount of sample. CRUSHABILITY TESTS Bond Impact Procedure F. C. Bond (1946) detailed the development of the pendulum impact device that is still used by the leading crusher manufacturers (Bond; Rexnord, 1976).
