The Institute maintains a dual relationship with students: (1) an individual relationship with a Student Associate; and (2) a relationship with local organizations of students, known as Affiliated Student Societies or Student Chapters. 1. The conditions of Student Associateship are set forth in Section 9, Article I, of the Bylaws of the Institute (see page 64 and following pages). During 1934, sundry amendments were made for the purpose of improving the student relationship. Postgraduate students are now eligible; and associateship can be maintained, with the payment of the regular dues of $2 per year, for 18 months following graduation in June. Safety records in the mineral industry for 1954 will do well to hold their own as compared with 1953, because of the poorer rate in the coalmining branches, even without the recent mine explosion at the No. 9 mine of the Jamison Coal & Coke Co., Farmington, W. Va., that killed 16 persons. .The cause of that disaster has not yet been ascertained. The metal-mining branch appears to have improved its record over the last year, however. Health Diesel equipment continues to be favored in non-coal mines. Equipment includes locomotives, trucks, tractors, and muckers. Of major concern and interest is the establishment of a new threshold limit for oxides of nitrogen-5 ppm as compared with 25 ppm. This gas is the most harmful component of diesel-engine exhaust gas

COPPER ore from Kennecott Copper's Ray mine, about 60 miles southeast of Phoenix, Ariz., is concentrated at the company's mill at Hayden, some 18 miles south of the mine. The Hayden mill is currently treating 16,000 tons of ore per day by flotation, using raconite, a crude butyl xanthate, as a collector for the sulfide copper minerals and lime as a pyrite depressant.1 The ore contains significant amounts of nonsulfide copper minerals, but recovery of these values has been low. The Hayden mill is now being modified to provide for treatment of future ores by leach- precipitation-flotation (L-P-F). This modification, costing about $5 million, is expected to reduce the loss of nonsulfide copper values and improve overall copper recovery by an additional 2 lb per ton of ore.

The effect of increasing ionic strength, via monovalent and divalent ions, on alkyl sulfate flotation of hematite and quartz war investigated. The effects of collector chain length and pretreatment on this flotation were also studied. Sodium hexadecyl sulfate was shown to be a superior flotation collector to sodium dodecyl sulfate for recovery of hematite when there was no salt addition. Similar observation were made when sodium sulfate or sodium chloride was used to control ionic strength. Sodium dodecyl sulfate floated hematite better than its longer chutited counterpart under conditions of low pretreatment temperature and increasing calcium chloride concentration. The flotation recovery for all salt containing pulps was almost always improved after preboiling. Most of the results obtained when the pretreatment temperature was raised were attributed to increased solubility of the collector.

The object of this paper is to offer a few suggestions for improving the mining and mineral statistics presented by the governments of various nations on both sides of the Atlantic. At the present time one may fairly complain of' two evils—lack of uniformity in some cases and want of completeness in others. The consequence is that the statistics are either less plain than they might be, or are useless for comparisons, or fail to present a faithful picture of the state of the mining industries of a country. Since World War II we have all been treated to repeated public and private evaluation of the population explosion. Improvements in medicine and agriculture have brought greater life expectancy and a decreasing infant mortality rate. This has brought boom conditions to some areas-and pressures everywhere for the amenities of life: a little elbow room, a tree or a pot of flowers, space to hike or swim with some freedom have all become premium commodities. With this wish for privacy and attractive surroundings, people are being forced to move to once sparsely populated areas. Suburbs expand or sprawl, depending on the point of view. New country is touched by a freeway and houses and stores spring up overnight. Entire new cities are born to meet the increasing mobility of industry and its work force.

The authors are to be complimented on using a novel and potentially helpful technique to analyze the effects of mine roof trusses. However, some criticisms of their application and analysis seem appropriate to further its acceptance. This discussion will deal with the normal structural analysis format covering: 1) material. 2) load, 3) structure, and 4) analysis. It will then briefly review the testing procedures and finally cover miscellaneous items. That the analytical and testing results admittedly disagreed by several orders of magnitude, indicates a need for improved understanding. The introduction of data determined previously was not assisted by references to "Interim" or "Preliminary" reports. This material should have been concisely reformulated for the open discussions that Transactions encourage. In addition, many important simplifying assumptions are tacitly made without recognition, and much less, an attempted justification.

FOR many years gravitational classification has been employed as a basic tool in beneficiation of minerals and coal. While improvements have been made to increase efficiency and fields of application, the basic flow pattern has remained relatively unchanged in most gravitational classifiers. Feed slurry is introduced into a settling pool wherein the coarser solids settle against either an upward or horizontal fluid current, or a combination of both, and are withdrawn in a concentrated underflow stream. The finer solids below the classification point possess too low a settling velocity and thus are primarily swept out through a weir overflow by the bulk of the fluid. Because of its simplicity, efficiency, and low power and maintenance costs, gravitational classification finds a wide acceptance for separations in the range of 20 to 325 mesh.

The success of European experiments in melting iron and steel with gases resulting from the decomposition of steam by incandescent coal, has encouraged me to design, with the valuable assistance of Mr. George S. Dwight, a plan for producing and burning these gases in a manner economical and efficient for metallurgical purposes. That this direction is the right one, is demonstrated by the repeated efforts made in practice, to introduce as much steam as possible with the blast in ordinary producers, thus displacing a certain amount of nitrogen. Such attempts, however, must always be limited by the cooling influence of the steam. As soon as the likelihood of American participation in the war was established, and in spite of the fact that we can produce almost as much as all other countries combined, the demand for prompt deliveries of iron and steel products from American factories began to exceed their utmost capacity, and, after fifteen months of practically full operation, has continued to do so. Therefore, it would seem worth while to review some of the aspects of the supply and demand for steel as well as the efforts that are being made to bring them into balance. It is still being debated as to whether the situation should be defined as a real shortage that will persist through the emergency period or as a temporary one than can be relieved by less drastic measures than a Government-sponsored program of expanding existing plants and building new ones.

Examples are presented which show that the velocity~ amplitude, attenuation and apparent frequency of several acoustic waves can be recorded in the borehole. Examination of such recordings, termed "character" logs, indicates that the wave types observed include a refracted compressional wave and a wave which travels with formation shear velocity. Laboratory data are used to show that compressional and shear wave velocities are dependent on porosity, effective stress and lithology; but that the change in reciprocal velocity per unit change in porosity is larger for shear waves than for compressional waves. We, therefore, conclude that. the accuracy of porosity determinations can sometimes be improved by use of shear wave velocities, provided that the shear wave amplitudes are large enough to delineate the shear arrival from the preceding compressional arrival on the character log. Borehole data are presented which show that the difference between shear wave and compressional wave reciprocal velocities can be used to predict porosities. This is a refinement which may allow the prediction of porosities from single-receiver acoustic logs without introduction of errors from borehole fluid traveltimes. Laboratory and field data are presented to show that the relationship between compressional and shear wave velocities can be used to indicate lithology. An example is presented to show that fractures usually cause a greater reduction in borehole shear wave amplitudes than in compressional wave amplitudes, an effect which may offer a more reliable means of detecting fractures. The complexity of the borehole acoustic wave train can rake presently available cement bond logs highly sensitive to the gate and bias settings used. The character log offers a means to circumvent possible misinterpretations by recording all amplitudes, from which the interpreter can select the appropriate data for evaluating the cement bond. Character logs may also be used as a quality control for open-hole transit-time logs when existence of small compressional wave amplitudes interferes with the proper functioning of bias-controlled timing devices. Evaluation of the potential uses of character log data is not complete; but a character log presented in a form convenient for routine use would be a desirable addition to currently available logs. To summarize, possible applications for such a log in formation evaluation include the following (1) quality control of transit-time logs, (2) refinement of porosity predictions, (3) determination of lithology, (4) improvement of fracture detection and (5) improvement of cement bond evaluation. Suggestions are made regarding the requirements for a suficient but practical character log for routine use. INTRODUCTION Acoustic logs have become a widely used porosity tool in formation evaluation. In addition, there is a growing application of acoustic logs in cement bond evaluation and fracture detection. These applications have mainly involved the use of logs of first-arrival transit times and amplitudes and have not included detailed studies of the complete signal. The purpose of this paper is to show that significant benefits in formation evaluation can be gained by a more complete use of the acoustic wave train generated in the borehole by an acoustic logging tool. We hope that this discussion will also stimulate further development of logs suitable for routine use so that these benefits may be realized. Examples of acoustic wave train logs, termed "character" logs, are presented to show that several identifiable acoustic waves are present in the borehole. The measurable characteristics of these acoustic waves and some of their relations to formation properties of interest are also discussed. The more obvious potential uses of character logs are listed, and some suggestions are made regarding the requirements for a sufficient but practical character log for routine use. CHARACTER LOGS Some 10 years ago, Vogel' and Summers and Broding' noted that the signals received uphole from an acoustic logging tool located in a borehole had a number of interesting characteristics. The logging tool consisted of two or more pressure transducers spaced on an acoustically insulated body (Fig. la). One of the pressure transducers was used as a transmitter to generate pressure waves in the borehole fluid. The other transducer served as a receiver to detect any pressure waves reaching it in the borehole. The receiver then converted these pressure waves to electrical signals which were transmitted to the surface and displayed on an oscilloscope as a record of time vs receiver-signal amplitude. Composite structure of hafnium, zirconium, and titanium diboride with additions of metals and/or compound phases were prepared by reactive high-pressure hot pvessing and evaluated in air and in mixtures of oxygen and helium at temperatures up to 2400°K and at linear flow rates of 0.1 to 0.2 ft per sec stp. Oxidation characteristics, principally depth of conversion of diboride to dioxide, were determined by a gas analysis method and by postoxidation metallo-graphic analyses. The best oxidation resistance was observed for hafnium diboride-silicon carbide composite which exhibited a 6-mil conversion to dioxide for a 1-hv oxidation in air at 2200°K compared to a 20-mil recession for hafnium diboride with no additive. Analogous improvements in oxidation resistance were observed for the addition of silicon carbide to zirconium. EARLIER investigationof the oxidation behavior of the diborides of the transition elements of Groups IVA and VA in flowing gas mixtures have produced a ranking of these compounds according to which HfB2 is the most oxidation-resistant followed in turn by ZrB2 > TiB2 > TaBz > NbB2. Other ~tudies~-~ have examined the physical, thermal, and thermodynamic properties of these diborides to provide a sound basis for the more detailed and specialized investigations which are required to generate the information needed to assess the usefulness of such materials in high-temperature oxidizing environments. Recent oxidation studies7 have examined the effect of variations of metal and boron content on the oxidation characteristics of zirconium and hafnium diboride in flowing gas mixtures including air and helium plus oxygen. Results obtained in the latter investigation confirmed the superior oxidation resistance of HfB2 over ZrB2. Moreover, metal-rich compositions of hafnium diboride showed improved oxidation resistance over boron-rich compositions at temperatures up to 2000°K; at higher temperatures the differences are not distinguishable. In particular HfBI.7 exhibited a diboride to dioxide conversion depth of 4 mils in 1 hr at 2000°K; HfB2. 2 exhibited a conversion depth of 16 mils for the same exposure.~ Specimens for the study of metal and boron stoichiometry on the oxidation characteristics of HfB2 and ZrB2 were prepared by high-pressure hot pressing, a specialized type of fabrication which produced dense crack-free bodies of the desired compositions with no significant impurity introductions. The purpose of the present investigation was to explore the possibility of further improving the oxidation resistance of the metal-rich ZrB, and HfB2. The plan to accomplish this objective was based in the formulation of several diboride compositions containing other compounds and phases which are generally known to have good oxidation resistance in one or more types of test environment. Ideally, such additives would also enhance or at least not diminish other boride property values principally mechanical strength and those parameters related to thermal stress resistance. The additions selected for HfBz included zirconium, aluminum, and (Ta + TaB2) designed to produce ternary metal diborides, hafnium to form a discrete HfB phase, chromium to provide a metal skeletal phase, (Hf + Si) to form a discrete hafnium silicide phase, and Sic to provide a discrete second phase. Additions to ZrB2 included A1 + B designed to produce a ternary metal diboride, Zr + Si to form a discrete zirconium silicide phase, and Sic to provide a discrete second phase. All the specimens were prepared by high-pressure hot pressing which was used to advantage to fabricate billets of the variety of compositions desired and suitable for oxidation testing. The present investigation also included the evaluation of high-pressure hot-pressed TiB2and TiB2-20 vol pct Sic, conventionally hot-pressed Boride 2,' and KT silicon carbide. Boride

ALTHOUGH Kennecott's orebody has long been outlined, it is still necessary to define further its limits. This mine, long an advocate of churn drill methods, recently supplemented its practice by using a diamond drill. So far, the diamond drill holes have been along the main canyon floor which traverses the mine area. This zone, highly fractured, is cut by numerous friable quartz veinlets encountered within the porphyry. These veinlets, formed by filling contracted porphyry fractures with hot, siliceous, mineral-bearing solutions, are often more highly mineralized than adjacent porphyry. They pulverize on contact, yielding only slight amounts of core. For this reason neither analysis of core recovered (amounting to 37.5 pct of approximately 10,000 ft of hole drilled) nor sludge analysis considered separately would give correct assays. The following equation has been adopted: actual weight theoretical actual weight core — theoretical weight sludge Drilling is done un.der contract. Collection of core and sludge samples together with double-checked assaying is done by the company. Microscopic, specto-graphic, and X-ray examination of rock specimen saved is carried on at the University of Utah. A fund, set up by Kennecott Copper Corp. at the University, has encouraged cooperation in solution of mining research problems. The drill used is a Longyear hydraulic powered by a Waukesha 26-hp gasoline motor. A pump, Bean Royal type, is powered by a 7-hp Briggs-Stratton gasoline motor. Weight of unit is 4000 lb and is placed under tripod of 35-ft wood poles within a 25-ft sq area. The following results have been attained: Avg depth of hole drilled, ft 1215 Avg drilling depth per 8-hr shift, ft 10.11 Core Size, In. Avg depth of NC casing, ft 21 2 11/16 Avg depth of NX casing and size core, ft 178 2Ye Avg depth of BX casing and size core. ft 427 1% Avg depth of AX casing and size core, ft 585 1 5/32 Through the use of metal sludge collection boxes, 12 ft long, 18 in. wide, and varying from 12 to 24 in. in depth, sludge recovery has been maintained above 95 pct. Samples, both core and sludge, are assembled for each sample interval and averaged in 50-ft bench increments. Determinations for mineral values are made at both the mine and mill. Assay results varying in excess of 0.05 of copper assay values are rerun to determine correct assay. The organization chart for the Kennecott Utah copper mine is shown in Fig. 1. The Utah mine requires approximately four men per shovel shift to drill solid rock, properly slope banks, and trim loose material from the top of bench sections in making them safe for men and equipment working below. During recent years, while the mine has been worked day and night, powder crews have worked day shift only. Series of toe holes drilled back of advancing electric shovels comprise approximately 70 pct of all mine drilling. These holes, spaced about 21 ft apart, have a depth of 24 ft. Of the footage drilled, 25 pct is for vertical holes either 24 or 28 ft deep, spaced about 28 ft centers along the top rim of banks. This combination of toe holes, using an Ingersol-Rand DA 35 drifter mounted on a tripod and the vertical holes using an Ingersol-Rand Type X71 wagon drill is standard practice above the pit elevation. These benches are 68 ft high, with a few exceptions, while benches below the pit elevation are 50 ft high and require very little drilling other than toe holes. Five benches, varying in height from 80 to 100 ft, require a combination of toe holes plus vertical holes and bank holes or electric churn drill holes. Bank holes using the DA 35 drifter and electric churn drill using Bucyrus-Erie Model 29T, account for 5 pct of feet drilled. Until the past year, drilling of fill material on upper levels was accomplished by churn drill method. Wagon drills are now used for fills because they can be set up and drill a hole an hour. It is necessary to run an air drill 7 hr for each 8-hr shovel shift. Average drilling rates during the past year were as follows: DA 35 drifter using 2 and 3-man crews — 4.36 ft per man hr X 71 wagon drill using 2-man crews — 6.45 ft per man hr DA 35 drifter bank holes, 3-man crews — 2.53 ft per man hr Bucyrus-Erie churn drill, 2-man crews —1.9 ft per man hr Total mine avg — 4.57 ft per man hr Mine practice assigns powdermen to job locations where they perform all drilling and blasting work within the area. Almost as much labor is consumed in springing and loading holes as in drilling them. Average powder consumption is approximately as follows: Per Electric Shovel Shift, Lb To spring and chamber holes — 50 Blasting — 500 Trim banks — 50 One fifth of all powder used is Hercules hercomite bag powder while four fifths is Hercules gelamite 65 pct strength in 1 Vi in. x 8 in. sticks. Frozen material, overhanging from top banks, creates a winter hazard to shovel operators and equipment. Experiments are being conducted with a high-speed Hercules powder in an effort to eliminate this condition. Banks are trimmed by powdermen who lodge 8 or 10 bundles of powder, containing 15 or 20 sticks each, across the upper surfaces of each working face. To each bundle of powder is attached a primer with 6-ft fuse which is lighted as the powdermen, who have lowered themselves down the bank on ropes, ascend to safety. Three angle dozers, D8 caterpillars, make grades and move supplies for the average 31 drilling machines working daily. Compressed air is furnished by three Ingersol-Rand compressors, each with rated capacity of 3750 cu ft of air per min at 100 lb reservoir pressure.

Slovenliness is as reprehensible in words as in clothes. Much writing that we recognize as poor in style is merely sloppy. Just as some students postpone the necessary shave or forget to change their collars, so young engineers in writing drop their articles, definite and indefinite, or omit prepositions where they are required, possibly to compensate for these they use unnecessarily The work will begin [on] Saturday. Construction of the mill started [on] August 12, 1915, at which time 75% of the excavation was completed. When a unit of mapping is furnished, be the unit a claim or [a] group of claims, it is necessary .. . A fully stocked store was started in Park City and all employees [were] sold merchandise on a strictly cost basis. The word "merchandise" is left without government or agreement. I suggest: ". . . and merchandise] was sold to all the employees on a strictly cash basis.". The verb `be' is serving concurrently both as a principal and as an auxiliary in the following: At first the work was interesting and [was] liked by most of the men. The sulphide ore was more complex or [was] milled at an increased cost. The failure to repeat tie auxiliary verb in successive clauses is a common error, as in The filter is filled with liquid allowed to empty, and then ignited.

WHEN I was asked to speak on the subject of leaching, I did not realize that a complete summary of recent progress in leaching had been given by Stuart Croasdale. I shall try to give some other phases of the subject that were not touched by Mr. Croasdale. Not all metallurgists are in harmony as to their methods of treating metals. If they were it would probably mean lack of progress. They can be divided into two classes-the pyrometallurgists, using fire means, and the hydrometallurgists, or those using leaching methods. Conflict is always good for progress; we have it in politics, and in religion there are fundamentalists, and those who are not fundamentalists. As representing pyrometallurgy, may I hope not to be classed among the fundamentalists. The leaching of ores is not new. The leaching of ores for the recovery of metals, however, is quite new. The older leaching was simply to recover the salts. Agricola, back in 1555, I think it was, outlined a great many methods of leaching for the recovery of salts. Creep activation energies for single aluminum crystals favorably oriented for shear by (010) [101] glide were detemined over the temperature range from 78" to 900°K. Observations of slip bands on the specimen surface were made in conjunction with the investigation. From 78" to 780°K, the activation energies obtained in this imestigation agreed closely with those previously found for creep by (111) [101] slip. Between 78" and 140°K, the activation energy was identified with the Peierls process, while between 260°and 780°K the activation energy was close to that for cross-slip. The coarse wavy slip bands nominally parallel to the (010) plane observed above 260°K were attributed to fine cross-slip. From 800" to 900°K, unusually high apparent activation energies ranging from 28,000 to 54,000 cal per mole were obtained. These apparent activation energies were attributed to re crystallization. AS illustrated in Fig. 1, a recent investigation1 has shown that creep of aluminum single crystals by the (111) [i01] mechanism is controlled by three unique processes, each of which is characterized by a single activation energy which is independent of the applied stress and the creep strain. A comparison of the observed activation energies with theoretically calculated values permits a fairly clear identification of the three operative creep processes. Below 450°K, where the activation energy for creep is 3,400 cal per mole, the deformation is controlled by the Peierls process, the activation energy for creep agreeing well with that calculated by seeger2 for the energy required to nucleate the motion of a dislocation loop against the atomic forces of the lattice. Between 590° and 750°K, the observed activation energy for creep of about 28,000 cal per mole agrees well with the energy necessary to induce cross-slip. Seeger and schoeck3 estimate that the activation energy is about 24,000 cal per mole whereas Friedel4 recently calculated this activation energy to be 28,000 cal per mole. Above 800°K the activation energy of 35,500 cal per mole that was observed for creep agrees well with that estimated for self-diffusion in aluminum.= In this range the operative rate-controlling slip process has been clearly identified as that arising from the climb of edge dislocations. The objective of this investigation is to ascertain whether a single crystal of aluminum favorably oriented for simple shear in the [loll direction on the (010) plane might exhibit uniquely different activation energies for creep from those obtained previously for (111) [101] slip. Whereas the exis- tence of such unique activation energies would constitute incontrover table evidence for new mechanisms of slip, the absence of any new activation energies might suggest that slip of aluminum is confined to the (111) [loll mechanism. Several factors prompted the selection of the (010) [101] orientation for study. First, there are more reported observations of (010) [loll slip than of any other nonoctahe-dral mechanism.8-10Secondly, Chalmers and Martius1l have concluded from considerations of the energies of dislocations that (010) slip is the second most favored mechanism in face-centered-cubic metals. Finally, favorable orientations for simple shear by the (010) [loll mechanism provide the least favored orientation for slip by the (111) [101] mechanism. EXPE-RIMENTAL PRO-CEDURE The high-purity aluminum stock, specimen preparation, shear fixture, extensometry, and experimental technique used in this investigation were the same as those previously reported.' The finished specimen had a central reduced section 0.190 in. wide and 0.590 in. in diam and 1/4-in. grip sections at both sides, 0.690 in. in diameter. The specimen was oriented in the stainless steel grips of the shear fixture with the (010) plane perpendicular to the dumbbell axis and the [loll direction parallel to the stress axis within 2 deg. Creep activation energies were calculated in the previously described manner1 from determinations of the instantaneous change in shear strain rate produced by an abrupt 15 to 20 deg increase or decrease in test temperature. The Committee on Evaluation of Coal for Blast-furnace Coke reports progress in the working out of the problem of evaluation. There has been no full meeting of the Committee but there have been several conferences with two or more of the members present, and the different members have expressed themselves freely on the five points that have been under consideration since the meeting of the Committee in New York on Feb. 16, 1932. The need of a method of coal evaluation, not only of coking coals but all other kinds, is obvious. Under NRA it becomes imperative that coals of the same size from the same seam be priced according to their variations in quality, especially in reference to cleanliness in respect to freedom from extraneous ash-forming materials. In looking over the correspondence that has passed between members of our Committee, it is evident that much of the confusion and misunderstanding would disappear if we could realize that practically all of the variations in value of coal from the same seam of coal are due to variations in the amounts of extraneous materials that are contained in the coal as it passes over the scales for shipment. It is not now a question with our committee as to the differentials in value, or in prices, between different kinds of coking coals or between noncoking and coking coals; our present problem is to arrive at the method for determining the scale of values of the coal from a certain coal seam according to the increase or decrease of extraneous ash and moisture from a predetermined base line adopted for that particular coal. The five points mentioned above are the same as discussed at the meeting in February, 1932, except that the temperature for determining the moisture content has been changed from 212" F. to 221" F., at the suggestion of Dr. A. C. Fieldner. The points are: 1. It is proposed that the coal industry adopt as a base line for evaluating all coals the analysis of the coal as it passes over the neighing device that determines the tonnage of coal bought and sold. 2. It is proposed that the Committee on Evaluation of Coal for Blast-furnace Coke approve the adoption of the base line for Pittsburgh seam coal presented by F. A. Jordan at the annual meeting of A.I.M.E.

The coal industry had another prosperous year in 1966. Since the turn of the decade, production has been climbing at an average rate of 6% per annum. Although the fast pace slackened somewhat, 1966 production showed a gain of almost 3 % over that of 1965. An impressive record can be drawn from the fact that output per man-day in 1966 was more than twice that of the early 1950's, and more than three times that of the early 1940's. And even though man-power requirements lessened, those men retained by the industry worked longer hours and benefited through higher hourly pay rates. However, cost to the customer increased a little. Such statements can only be made for a healthy industry -one that is constantly improving its efficiency. Coal currently provides more than 25% of the total U.S. energy output. About 50% of all U.S.- mined bituminous coal goes directly to the electric utility market. It should be noted that, now, well over one trillion kwh of electricity is generated annually. Dependence of the giant electric utility industry on coal is based on economy and an abundant, dependable supply of this fuel.

IN the development of iron mines and production of iron ore from the Marquette range, drilling blast-holes is an important phase of the mining cycle. The ground drilled in ore production can be classified into two main categories, soft hematite and hard hematite or magnetite. Within these categories the material exhibits a wide range of penetrability by percussion drills. Development work encounters various types of rock. Slate and altered basic intrusives constitute the softer types commonly encountered. Harder materials are represented mainly by greywacke, quartzite, iron formation, and diorite. Prior to the first tungsten carbide trials in late 1947 and early 1948, hard-rock and ore drilling was done with steel jackbits starting at 21/4-in. diam. These were reconditioned by hot milling. Automatic or handcrank 31/2-in. drifters were employed, mounted on Jumbos, posts and arms, or tripods, depending upon the working place. With the exception of shaft sinking jobs where 55-lb sinker machines were and still are used with 1-in. quarter octagon steel, the other production and development mining utilized 11/4-in. round and Leyner-lugged steel. The following properties have been selected as typical examples wherein carbide bit applications have proved economical. The Mather mine "A" and "B" shafts and Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. mines are soft ore mines where insert bits are used in rock development only. The Greenwood mine, Inland Steel Co., Champion mine, North Range Mining Co., and Cliffs shaft mine, Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., are hard ore mines where all drilling is done with tungsten carbide bits. Mother Mine "A" Shaft In the Mather mine "A" shaft and other soft ore properties where only rock development work is done with the tungsten carbide bits, several types and makes of bits have been tried since early 1948. The greatest proportion of failures have been at the connection end, although the early trials with the 13 Series Carset 11/2-in. bit used in conjunction with 31/2 -in. automatic-feed drifters, showed an equal amount of shattered inserts. To combat this shattering, the 31/2 -in. drifters were replaced by 3-in. drifters, thus eliminating, for the most part, insert failures. However, the attachment end of the rod continued to be the main source of trouble. The greatest amount of failure was in the stud or at the upset section approximately 2 in. behind the drive shoulder of the rod. Heat treatment was changed several times as well as the composition of the alloy studs. Since this failed to correct the trouble, a decision was made to change to a heavier attachment section. Timken 11/2-in., type M, bits were then employed and showed an exceptional improvement. The rods are discarded when the thread contour shows sharpening or wear on the shoulder. It was also learned that the Timken insert did not show as rapid gage and cutting edge wear as did competitive makes, and footage per use increased by approximately 50 pct. Prior to the Timken trials the average life per bit at the Mather mine "A" shaft on 6-ft change chain-feed drifters was 500 ft, and the rod life at the connection end was 50 ft. The Timken bit with chrome-plated thread averaged 1200 ft, and rod life increased to as much as 500 ft. However, the life of the connection end was much better on shorter length drill rods or in places where machines with 34-in. change were used. The bit thread continued to be the point of ultimate failure with thread strippage, constituting the cause for discard of bits. In one of the new development headings, harder rock was encountered for approximately 800 ft, dropping the life per bit to a low of 90 ft with shank and thread life of rods dropping to approximately 125 ft average. The stripped bits were then welded to the rods, increasing the life per bit by 75 to 100 pct. The rod transportation for main level development was not a problem so intraset rods were tried. Intraset rods have tungsten carbide inserts set into the rods proper by the manufacturer and can be obtained with chisel or four point bits. This type of rod eliminates the need for any connection and the steel being a special alloy will show more feet drilled per rod. The first trial was made with eight rods, and final results averaged 350 ft per rod, six of the rods worked the life of the bit end, and two broke shanks at less than 50 ft. The preceding example showed a considerable improvement, so additional steel of the same type was purchased, but its use has been limited to main level drifting only, because of the handling problem involved in transportation of the complete rod to mine shops for resharpening. Further trials are being made on improving the life per detachable bit by chrome plating. To date, the chrome plating shows an improvement of approximately 100 pct. However, final results will not be known until the present long term trials have been completed. Mother Mine "B" Shaft In November 1947, tungsten carbide bits were first tried at the Mather mine "B" shaft. The use of 1%-in. Carset 13 Series bits, for drilling the 72-hole, 7-ft shaft round, decreased the drilling time from an average of 41/2 hr per round required with steel bits, to 2 hr with insert bits.
