Developments in oil refining were so varied during 1938 that a refiner had to be alert or be left behind. The long-talked-of conversion of oil refining into a true chemical industry using petroleum as a raw material was hastened, particularly in the realm of motor-fuel manufacture, by the increased understanding and use of catalytic processes. The petroleum refiner's vocabulary has been extended to include alkylation, cyclization, aromatization, and isomerization. There are other devel: opments of a similar nature, but these are now considered commercially feasible under proper conditions. New Equipment Less expensive equipment and processes encouraged new construction and replacement. Estimates of money spent in the United States on building new plants and remodeling existing installations during 1938 place the sum at not less than $200,000,000, a noteworthy amount in a year marked by a business recession. The commercial application of small-scale catalytic polymerization of refinery gases made one of the latest advances available to the smaller operators, who usually are faced with unit installation and production costs higher than the large refinery enjoys. Competition was thereby fostered. Outstanding in this respect was the construction of two or more polymerization plants in small refineries at extremely low installation costs, with amortization measured in months instead of years. Houdry Processes Bursting like a bombshell late in the year was the disclosure of the extent of the development of the Houdry processes of catalytic cracking, viscosity breaking, gasoline treatment, desulphurization, and polymerization, said to be applicable to almost any raw petroleum stock and yielding gasoline of exceptionally high octane number. BY far the most conspicuous of the Pennsylvania slate districts is that extending from the New Jersey line at the Delaware Water Gap westward almost to the Schuylkill River. This covers parts of three counties in east-central Pennsylvania: Northampton, Lehigh, and Berks. The most important development, both in geographic size and product importance, is in Lehigh and Northampton counties. The greater part of the region is underlain by only one formation-the Martinsburg, consisting of slates, clay slates, and sandy shales, all of the Ordovician period. The slate-bearing Martinsburg formation is underlain by Cambro-Ordovician limestones. Immediately overlying the Martinsburg formation is the Tuscarora quartzite of the Silurian period. The Martinsburg formation itself is divided into three distinct divisions, termed simply: the upper, the middle, and the lower members. Commercial slate has been extracted from all of these members, but the formation of greatest importance is the upper member, representing 2600 ft of the total formation thickness of nearly 11,000 ft. The upper member is commonly referred to as the "soft slate" and consists of three facies: 1) beds of blue-gray, very sandy, almost quartzitic slate, in many places, approximately a medium-coarse sand- stone with calcareous cement; 2) blue-gray sericitic slat-the dominant rock type of this member-with occasional chloritic beds; and 3) dark gray or virtually black, highly carbonaceous beds, referred to locally as "ribbons."

SHEET-ASPHALT paving mixtures are composed of three constituents: sand, mineral filler and asphalt. An average composition of such a mixture is sand 75 per cent, filler 15 per cent, and asphalt 10 per cent, figured on a weight basis. The structural strength of the mixture at normal or high temperatures depends mainly on the mineral aggregate (sand and filler), which consti-tutes the entire framework. The filler is the finely divided mineral matter largely passing a 200-mesh sieve, added to carry the sand grading down into infinitely fine particles and so reduce voidage and increase density. The asphalt imparts cohesiveness and tensile strength, gives a certain degree of plasticity, and waterproofs the mixture.

It is a grave objection to the present system (or rather lack of system) of mineralogical nomenclature that, in the very great majority of cases, the name of a mineral gives no hint of its chemical composition, one might almost say no suggestion, however faint, of anything connected with it or characteristic of it, chemical, physical, historical, geographical, geological, or lithological. In becoming acquainted with a mineral, in addition to learning its composition and important characteristics, one must also learn a name wholly unconnected with any of them. It has occurred to me that a system might be devised in which the name of each mineral should express at least an approximation to its ultimate composition. It is far easier to learn the names of most minerals than their compositions. Most of us are familiar with the names and appearance of many minerals, especially among the silicates, of whose compositions we have but a rough notion. It would be the aim of such a system to enable us, in making the one slight effort of learning the name of a mineral, by that same effort and involuntarily to learn its composition, which now requires an additional and a much greater effort. I have worked out a system designed to meet this requirement, and its description occupies the remainder of this article. Doubtless there are many devices on which could be based other systems fulfilling the requirement above set forth better than that about to be described does, and at the same time furnishing names

THE electric arc welding of cast iron has been studied by Braune, Lamberton, Schimpke, Kenyon, Gale Manufacturing Co., Wedemeyer, Candy, Neese, Miller, Carter, American Welding Society, Namack, Lebrun, Achenbach, Jansson, Kochendörffer and others.1 The writer of this paper has been able to obtain a series of cast irons, from gray to white, without using cast-iron electrodes but by coating on wrought-iron bars mixtures of carborundum (SiC) and graphite (C). In this work, he has found the curious phenomenon of barium- carbonate.

In 1972, coal mine productivity was in steady decline and labor and maintenance costs were spiralling upward. Yet, despite this sad state of affairs, nowhere in the US at that time was there a comprehensive and coordinated coal research and development plan in the offing. The Bureau of Mines had not yet been charged with such a responsibility, and industry was content to rely on machinery manufacturers for innovations. It was during this period that Bethlehem Steel Corp. determined that a new approach to coal mining research was needed for the industry as well as for the company itself. After studying Bethlehem's own mining practices, the state-of-the-art of mining research elsewhere, and development work by manufacturers, a comprehensive research package was presented to company management in late 1972. The ideas and experience of many operating and management personnel in the company contributed to the formulation of the final plan as approved.

HOSTILITIES in Europe, Asia, and northern Africa were responsible for dislocations in rare-metal supplies during 1940. Although the consumption of some of the rare metals is small the dislocations may be relatively large. In some cases these are advantageous to North America and in others they are disadvantageous. Specific instances will be cited later. Barium T HIN films of barium metal on special steel balls greatly improve the life and reduce the friction of rotating anodes in highly evacuated small X-ray tubes and make possible the operation of these anodes at relatively high temperatures. These remarkable results are described in an article by Atlee, Wilson, and Filmer in the Journal of Applied Physics for September, 1940. Oil could not be used because of the high temperatures on the one hand and its volatility on the other. Fig. 3 shows diagramatically the rotating anode and the method of coating the steel balls with barium. The letters K.I.C. refer to "Kemet Iron Clad." Conditions in the gasoline market undoubtedly influence the oil industry's general economic situation to a greater degree than perhaps any other single factor. No matter how efficiently the oil industry manages to conduct its producing operations, a drop in the price of gasoline exerts definite pressure upon the posted price of crude oil in the field. Efforts of the recent past have shown that profits from the producing division of the industry are closely tied in with the course of the gasoline market. When refinery gasoline prices are depressed, as they have been during recent months, it is utterly impossible for purchasers to maintain a crude market that is commensurate with the cost of production, regardless of how well balanced the producing situation may be. In fact, the producer can no longer regard his operations in the light of an independent unit of the oil industry, since his financial well-being is directly dependent upon the well-being of the refiner. Because gasoline is the principal constituent of crude oil, it is obvious that profitable refining operations can only be maintained through profitable gasoline markets. Likewise, when the price of gasoline influences a profit for the refinery it also influences the prosperity of the producer, through the advent of higher and more profitable posted prices for crude oil in the field. Financial results for 1932 showed material improvement over the preceding year, primarily because the price of gasoline was maintained at levels somewhat above those of 1931. Consequently, the producer was able to record improvement in the crude market, through a somewhat higher level of posted prices. While effective methods of prora-t,ion of crude production are given credit for the advance recorded in the crude market last year, it is also a fact that the advent of higher prices for gasoline had a direct influence upon the posted prices of crude oil. For example, when gasoline was sold in Group 3 at 2 3/4 a gallon in June and July, 1931, the price of 36-gravity Mid-Continent crude was down to its lowest point of only 18c a barrel. As refinery prices advanced, however, there was a corresponding advance in posted prices of crude oil. Thus, when Group 3 gasoline commanded a price of 5c a gallon

In wertability alteration flooding, a chemical agent is rnoved through a reservoir by the flood water to increase oil recovery by decreasing the degree of wetting of the rock by the oil. Substantial amounts of the chemical may be lost during movement through the reservoir. The extent of the loss, and therefore the economics of the process, depends in some cases on factors which are difficult to reproduce in the laboratory. Therefore, a short-duration, low-cost field test method is needed to permit evaluation of chemical requirements under actual field conditions. This paper describes a small scale rest conducted at a single well for measuring chemical requirements, thereby giving a more reliable evaluation of this important factor in the applicability and economics of the process. In the rest a small wafer slug containing the chemical agent and a nonadsorbed tracer is displaced into the reservoir by a known volume of wafer. The well is then placed on producrion. Chemical loss per barrel of pore volume contacted is calculated from [he fractional recoveries of the agent tested and the nonadsorbed tracer. The method has been used to determine within the actual reservoirs the chemical requirements for both a sandstone and a dolomite reservoir. Several chemical agents are potentially available for wettability alteration flooding, although none is universally applicable. For some applications of the method, chemical costs per barrel of additional oil recovered can be substantially less than one dollar. INTRODUCTION Wettability alteration flooding provides a means of increasing oil recovery from reservoirs by decreasing the degree of wetting of the rock by the oil and increasing the displacement efficiency of the flood water. Earlier studies demonstrated a relationship between oil recovery during waterflooding and the degree of wetting of a rock surface by an oil. The application of wettability alteration flooding to the Harrisburg field of Nebraska provided a field test' of this recovery process. Subsequently, additional laboratory and field tests have developed additional procedures for evaluating wettability alteration flooding, and have indicated where the process may be applicable. Applicability of this process to specific reservoirs is determined by a progression of tests to determine sus- ceptibility of the reservoir to alteration of its wettability, to indicate the degree of recovery improvement and to estimate the amount of chemical required to process the reservoir. The economics of applying improved oil recovery processes depends not only upon the degree of improvement in oil recovery achievable by the process but also upon the process costs and the timing of the income and the investment. Emphasis in this paper is on the expenditure aspects of the process. The work reported in this paper indicates that the chemical investments required for wettability alteration flooding are substantial. For evaluating the economics of a potential flooding application it is imperative that a sound estimate of the chemical requirements be made for the reservoir. Generally, true reservoir conditions are not adequately simulated in laboratory chemical propagation tests. Because of wide well spacings, many years might be required to obtain chemical propagation data from conventional pilots or inter-well tests. Consequently, n short-duration, low-cost method is needed to determine chemical requirements in the field. The potential applicability of wettability alteration flooding is discussed, as well as the economics of wettability alteration with respect to the inherent and imposed restrictions on the timing of income and investments. DETERMINATION OF CHEMICAL REQUIREMENTS In the process of moving a chemical bank through reservoir rock, some of the chemical agent lags too far behind the flood front to be effective or is otherwise lost to the reservoir system. The extent to which these losses occur overshadows the reductions in chemical concentration due to diffusion and to mixing with the reservoir fluids. Experience indicates that almost without exception, chemicals which induce a wetting change undergo either sorption reactions or chemical reactions with mineral constituents of the pore surfaces. Other reactions may occur between the added chemical and the reservoir oil and water. Even in limiting consideration to reactions of the relatively inexpensive inorganic salts, bases and acids, the reactions may be exceedingly complex. Reservoir pore surfaces consist of more than silica in sandstone reservoirs, and more than calcite or dolomite in carbonate reservoirs. Many mineral species are present, each exhibiting specific tendencies to react with an injected chemical. The reactions which occur can consume enough of the agent to have an important effect on economics. These reactions can cause a change in pH of the chemical bank, or may remove some of the active chemical by precipitation, adsorption or reaction to form a new chemical which may or may not be effective in

IN this paper are presented the results of a complete statistical survey of the enrolment, courses and degrees, and the employment situation of recent graduates in all of the 46 institutions in the United States, including Alaska, and four of the six schools in Canada that grant degrees in mineral technology. The data were collected by the writer by means of a questionnaire in December, 1933, to which all the institutions, except one, replied. Included also are data of a similar study made by the writer in May, 1933, for the S. P. E. E. summer session of mining and metallurgical teachers at the University of Wisconsin and published in the Journal of Engineering Education for December. 1933. Some of the data of a paper of the writer's entitled, "The Trend of Mineral Engineering Student Enrolment in the United States," read at the A. I. M. E. meeting on Feb. 16. 1931, are given for comparison. Acknowledgment is made to all the administrative officers of the institutions who took the time from their busy lives to supply the in- formation asked for. There are two basic forms of the LPG-slug process: the gas driven and the water driven. The pressure required for miscibility between gas and LPG prohibits the use of the gas-driven LPG process in shallow reservoirs. The water-driven LPG slug process normally exhibits good sweep efficiency. However, displacement of the LPG by water is poor. An improvement in this process appears possible by injecting a slug of carbon dioxide between the LPG slug and the water drive. Laboratory experiments were conducted in homogeneous linear systems to determine the effect of pressure on the various displacement zones. In the carbon dioxide-LPG displacement zone, the effect of pressure on the displacement efficiency is negligible above the miscibility pressure. However, the displacement efficiency decreases linearly with decreasing pressure below the miscibility pressure. With water displacing carbon dioxide, it was found that the recovery of carbon dioxide after water breakthrough can be predicted from its solubility in water. A displacement test was conducted with LPG and carbon dioxide slugs large enough to avoid interference between the oil-LPG, LPG - carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide - water displacement zones. Under these conditions, essentially complete oil and LPG recovery was obtained. However, a substantial amount of carbon dioxide was left in the core at water breakthrough. INTRODUCTION It has been shown in homogeneous linear systems that essentially complete oil recovery can be obtained by displacement with a miscible fluid such as LPG. Economic considerations dictate that the valuable LPG also be recovered. Methods proposed for recovering the LPG include (1) displacement with natural gas at a pressure high enough to make the two fluids miscible1 (the disadvantage of this method is that the required pressure of about 1,500 psi is too high for shallow reservoirs) and (2) displacement of the LPG with water2 (principal disadvantage is that a large amount of LPG remains in the formation because of poor displacement efficiency). This paper treats an improvement in the water-driven LPG slug process3,4 where carbon dioxide is injected between the LPG and water. Carbon dioxide is completely or at least partially miscible with propane and soluble in water; thus, displacement efficiency is improved at both ends of the carbon dioxide slug. To minimize effects of other variables, all experiments were conducted in linear core systems. GENERAL PROCESS DESCRIPTION The displacements of propane by carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide by water are considered separately, assuming enough of each is injected to prevent mutual interference. Displacement descriptions are confined only to the part of the pore volume containing mobile fluids unless otherwise specified. The schematic representation is given in Fig. 1. Starting at the producing well, a zone containing only oil is followed by a zone containing a single-phase mixture of propane and oil. The concentration of propane increases in the direction of the injection well and ultimately grades to pure propane. Then follows a zone containing a mixture of propane and carbon dioxide in continuously varying proportions until 100 percent carbon dioxide is reached. In this zone, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the immobile water phase also varies from zero to full saturation. Whether the displacement of propane by carbon dioxide is of complete or partial miscibility depends on pressure and temperature (Fig. 2). MAGNETITE mining and milling in the Eastern States in 1939 showed considerable improvement over 1938. For the first eight months of the year production of magnetite proceeded at a normal rate but operations were stepped up in the last four months owing to increased domestic demand. In New York, the Republic Steel Corp. operated the Witherbee-Sherman mines at Mineville throughout the year. Chateaugay Ore and Iron Co. operated their low-phosphorus mine at Lyon Mountain for the first seven months, but on Aug. 1, Republic Steel took over this mine -and have since operated it. In Pennsylvania, the Bethlehem Steel Co, operated the Cornwall mine continuously. In New Jersey, Mt. Hops and Scrub Oak were in operation all year. The Washington mine went into production on Nov. 1 and the Richard mine on Dec. 1.

IN 1920 the Minnesota Tax Commission estimated a reserve of 1,341,674,538 long tons of iron ore in Minnesota, the Michigan State Tax Commission report showed 199,092,855 long tons in reserve in that state, and the Wisconsin Geological Survey set the Wisconsin reserves at 21,500,000 long tons. The total reserve that year for the Lake Superior District amounted to 1,562,267,393 long tons. Ten years later the reserves of iron ore in these same districts were Minnesota 1,235,227,510, Michigan 168,349,823, and Wisconsin 23,000,000, or a total of 1,426,577,333 long tons. The decrease in ore reserves in this ten-year period was 135,690,060 long tons, but the shipments were 520,746,975 long tons. In other words, the ten-year depletion in reserves was only 8.68 per cent. If similar conditions carry into the future this calculation would indicate a life for the ore reserves of the Lake Superior region of over 100 years.

As an important mechanism for increasing production of the suction-draft-sinter process, it has been shown that gas permeability through the sinter layer plays an important role. Methods to increase production rates have been indicated and suggestions for carrying out the process have been made to improve the rate of production, reduce the fuel consumption, and at the same time obtain a uniform sinter. Laboratory experiments were conducted at the Institute for Ferrous Metallurgy of the Technical University at Aachen to illustrate these methods. Methods of Increasing Gas Penetration Through Sinter Layers The following are of fundamental importance in determining the process cycle during the sintering of iron ores: 1) Generation of maximum temperature, since its form and range determine sinter quality. 2) Propagation velocity of the temperature maximum which controls the attainable output. 3) The convective heat transfer which influences the velocity of travel of the temperature maximum.

In the year 1948, more than ever before, the coal industry established itself on the threshold of a new and exciting future expansion. While production did not equal the wartime and peacetime peaks of 1944 and 1947, it was, in review, a good coal year. During the latter part of the year a combination of mild weather, record stock piling, and general business slackening reduced coal demand to the extent that marginal mines suspended operations, while mines remaining active found it necessary to renew their attention to producing better products at lower operating costs.

Improvements in the X-ray method of measuring liquid saturation and saturation distribution are presented. Two identical direct current amplifiers have been added to measure continuously the intensities of the X-ray tube output and the beam which has passed through the core under test. The ratio of these intensities is automatically recorded on a modified Brown Electronik Recorder. Arrangements have been made to drive the core automatically and in synchronism with the recorder chart so as to give a continuous curve showing the variation of liquid saturation along the length of the core. By determining the ratio of the two X-ray beam intensities simultaneously the measurements are made essentially independent of small fluctuation in voltage and current supplied to the tube. This improved technique has been used for investigating the fluid distribution along the length of cores and core assemblies when one fluid is displaced by another. Typical results of these studies are shown. INTRODUCTION In a previous publication' a method was described for measuring the oil saturation in cores which was based on the absorption of X-rays by the fluid content of the core. While that technique is capable of yielding accurate results, the original apparatus was not especially convenient for determining the fluid distribution along the length of a core. This was primarily due to the slow response of the amplifier and galvanometer and the necessity of making a point by point survey of the material under investigation. It was, therefore, not only possible for sections of the core having a variable or unusual saturation distribution to escape observation entirely, but changes in output of the X-ray generator between readings on the unknown and the monitor introduced errors in the measurements that could be avoided only by further stabilization of the source or by taking a large number of readings. This paper describes a method and apparatus for recording continuously and automatically the intensity of the X-ray beam that is transmitted by a core. The variation of saturation with time at a given section of the core may thus be found, or by scanning the core by driving it in synchronism with the recorder the saturation distribution may readily be determined. As indicated in the previous paper, the X-ray method possesses an advantage over the weighing technique in relative permeability experimentation in that the core need not be removed from the holder for the purpose of making a saturation measurement. Furthermore, the actual distribution of fluid and the effects upon that distribution of inflow and outflow heads may be investigated. And errors due to gas bubbles or loss of liquid that are frequently sources of error in volumetric methods of saturation determination are avoided. PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD The energy in an X-ray beam that has passed through an absorbing material is expressed by the well known formula: E = E0, e-cd (1) where E, is the energy in the incident beam, µ the mass absorption coefficient, c the density or concentration of absorbing material, and d is the length of path of the beam in the absorber. The coefficient µ varies with the wavelength of the radiation as well as with the absorbing material. The output of an X-ray tube varies in an approximately linear manner with the tube current, but to the second or higher power of the anode voltage. Moreover, the quality or wavelength distribution of the radiation varies with the voltage.

For a nation whose mining industry has generally been floating through history in the shadows of major mining developments elsewhere in the world, Australia has in the decade of the Sixties made a convincing bid to be one of the world's great "store- houses" of minerals. In fact, at the rate things are developing Down Under and Out Back, what with professional prospecting teams crisscrossing the continent under the direction of professional exploration management, Australia may one day find itself as the world's greatest storehouse. Whereas Necessity may be the Mother of Invention, Consumption is surely the Mother of Exploration. At least this is true in Australia of today. First, the forecasted shortage of iron ore in the world led to the fabulous discoveries in the Pilbara district of Western Australia. Now, the demand for nickel has generated even more interest among mining companies in the vast, untapped potential of Australia.

AT the present time the Climax Molybdenum Co. is the largest molybdenum producer in the world and the operator of the largest underground mine in North America. It has grown steadily and rapidly since its beginning in 1917. Only 250,000 lb of MoS2 were produced during the first year from 1917 to 1918 when the company was formed. Operations were suspended shortly thereafter because of the lack of a market and knowledge of the uses of molybdenum. During World War I it was used as a substitute for some rare metals and for minor chemical purposes. After 5 years of intensive research and sales promotion, Climax metallurgists succeeded in finding proper applications for the newly discovered metal and the mine was reopened in 1924. Demand for molybdenum increased gradually and in 1930, 3.5 million lb of MoS2 were produced. In the meantime, research work for additional uses of molybdenum continued until it had established itself as one of the most important alloying elements in producing high quality steels. After the start of World War 11, from January 1942 to October 1953, 43 million tons of molybdenum ore were mined and 484 million lb of MoS2 were produced. Climax mine is located in Colorado, 100 miles southwest of Denver and 12 miles northeast of Leadville on the Continental Divide of the Rocky Mountains. The principal mine workings range from 11,170 to 12,000 ft in elevation. Topographically, it lies in the base of a large cirque that is surrounded by Mt. Bartlett to the north, Clinton Peak and McNamee Peak to the east and Ceresco Ridge to the south. This cirque opens to the west and to the Ten Mile Valley.
