An apparatus has been developed which permits selective acidizing of producing formations and determination of the relative permeability of a formation by fluid injection. This apparatus, known as the "Electric Pilot," is an electrical fluid-interface locator, the electrical circuit of which is completed when the elec-tcodes in the well are in contact with a conductive fluid, but is not completed when immersed in a nonconductive fluid. Results are given for a number of typical acidizing applications in which the interface locator was used to control the acid. Description of the method used in making a permeability survey and the data obtained are also included. Introduction Early in the development of the acidizing industry it was recognized that one of the most important problems to be solved in the chemical treatment of any well was the determination of what part of the exposed section in the well should be treated and the selection of the technique that would insure treatment of the desired section. One of the first techniques adopted for assisting in proper placement of the acid, which is still widely used, is the method of confining the acid to the producing section by means of a column of oil, which is known as the Carr1 method of treatment, named for its inventor. In the Carr method it is not possible to selectively acidize a specific horizon in a multiple pay zone, so many improvements and modifications of the basic Carr technique were devised to accomplish this result. In order to overcome the possibility of the acid entering an undesirable section at the bottom of the well, organic gel plugs2 were introduced into the bottom of the well, which served to halt the entrance of the treating solution into these zones.3 These chemical gels later liquefied because of bacterial action and were removed from the well with the produced fluid. In fields where a gas cap existed, as in the Goldsmith field of Ector County, Texas) it was imperative that a treating technique be evolved that would confine the acid to the oil-producing zone below the gas cap. By so doing the oil-productive capacity of the wells could be improved without greatly increasing the gas production and this would lower the gas-oil ratio of the well. ~h, technique employed4 to achieve this effect utilized two pumps, one for pumping the chemicals down the tubing, the other to simultaneously force oil down the annular space to confine the acid to the oil pay, thus preventing the chemicals from entering the upper gas-bearing zones. Experience has indicated that gas wells and certain types of oil wells respond better to ''stage treating.'' This technique utilizes the introduction of a certain volume of acid and then allows the well to ''clean up99 before introduction of the next and usually successively larger stages. A SURVEY of rare metals and minerals for the past year places uranium as one of two partners, the other being the neutron, in what historians will probably say is the greatest discovery in physics at least during the year and probably for a consider- ably longer period. The uranium atom has been made to divide into parts somewhat after the style of reproduction of the amoeba. When an amoeba divides into two parts, however, it produces two amoebae substantially alike and each substantially like the parent: furthermore, there is no considerable change of energy when this happens. When the uranium atom divides it yields other atoms such as barium and krypton with the complete destruction of the original uranium atom but with the liberation of a tremendous amount of energy. This will be discussed more at length later.

That the domestic consumption of gasoline displays a marked seasonal variation, with a low in the winter and a high in the summer, is well known. It is logical to expect that the nature of the variation has itself been undergoing a change as a result of improvement in roads, general employment of closed cars, and growth of mass haulage; but so far as I am aware the change in seasonal variation has never been investigated and measured. It is the purpose of this paper to present the method and results of such an investigation, undertaken as a contribution to the technique of planning operating schedules now so prominent in connection with the functioning of the industry under a Federal quota system. E. Schumacher.*—Mr. Smith has shown us once again how variable lead alloys can be. I have studied lead alloys for a good many years and know from experience that their behavior cannot be predicted by analogy with other alloys. I have always been interested in observing how the creep resistance of lead may be improved by the addition of as little as 0.03 per cent Ca. Without the presence of calcium the grains of extruded lead pipe are fairly equiaxed and motion can take place easily at the boundaries. The calcium addition of 0.03 per cent causes the grain boundaries to become very irregular and jagged, and results in creep resistance many times greater than that of pure lead. Mr. Smith showed that in the one per cent antimony-lead alloy creep is occasionally excessive even where low stresses are involved. We have observed this phenomenon many

ONE of the most common technical terms in the U. S. today is automation-a word not listed in the 1946 dictionary. The influence of automation on the national economy has been tremendous. It has even been the subject of congressional investigations. Automation, writes Aronson, substitutes mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electric, and electronic devices for human effort and decision? Automatic devices and instruments are used extensively in some industries, but many others have yet to take full advantage of these great discoveries. The petroleum industry has been a leader in using automatic controls-some refineries are almost completely controlled by automatic devices. The field of geophysics is entirely dependent on instruments and has progressed at almost exactly the same rate as improvements in instrumentation. In metallurgy and mineral dressing use of instrumentation is increasing very rapidly. Mining engineers throughout the country are beginning to think in terms of instruments and controls.

Direct Reduced Iron is a product obtained during solid state reduction of iron oxides into metallic iron. General chemical and physical characteristics of all direct reduced iron materials result in a noticeable reoxidation tendency and a relatively low ignition temperature. As most of the chemical reactions are exothermic, normally heating occurs and if water is present hydrogen evolves. Dry direct reduced iron deactivates quickly in air but is still reactive if it comes into contact with moisture. Because of these characteristics, special requirements are necessary for safe storage, shipment, and handling. In an effort to improve this situation passivation techniques were and still are being developed. The paper discusses the properties of direct reduced iron, presents past experience with storage, shipment, and handling of MIDREX® Iron, a direct reduced iron material produced in the MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process, and evaluates benefits derived from different passivation techniques.

GENERALLY speaking, the production of other metals in Mexico fluctuates with that of silver. The first commercial discovery of mineral was in Taxco, Guerrero, in 1552. Five years later, the patio process was introduced at Pachuca, by Bartolome de Medina. In 1884, the main line of the Mexican Central R. R. was completed and a few years later, the National railway. In 1907, the patio process, after 350 years of successful operation, was replaced by cyanidation. Soon after the completion of the railroads, smelters were built at various points and provided means of treating ores that could not be treated by any of the processes existing at that time, such as patio, lixiviation, or pan amalgamation. As a result, a number of mines were developed along the railroads and even far \ out in the mountains. In order to facilitate the shipment of this ore to the smelters, purchasing agencies were established, which for a time were very profitable; most of these agencies are now permanently closed.

Similarities are noted in the practices and problems of constructing dams to impound mine tailings, fly ash, and chemical wastes. The comparison of a typical tailings dam with a conventional water-retaining earth dam shows that the former is inherently less stable and can be susceptible to cracking, liquefaction, erosion, and frost action, as illustrated by examples. Several methods are presented for building safe tailings dams using either the coarse fraction of the tailings or local soils, the important factor in each method being proper compaction of the material. The safety of existing tailings dams can be improved by flattening the overall slope, preferably by adding berms, or by decreasing the height. Where neither remedy is possible, the installation of electro-osmotic tie-backs is suggested. Dumps of mine spoil can be stabilized economically by compacting the material in layers along the toe to form a dam.

The design of slurry launders has usually been based on strictly empirical concepts. An examination of the most common procedures reveals that they do not account for many of the variables that are recognized as significant for slurry transport. These may include flow rate, volume concentration of solids, solids specific gravity, solids size distribution, particle shape, launder geometry, and roughness of the wetted surface. It was decided to develop a design procedure, which would accomplish two things: First: Take into consideration most of the known significant variables and systematize the procedure to assure consistent results. Second: Provide a rational basis for examining and utilizing operating data to refine and improve the system. To accomplish this, it was necessary to develop a basic design concept. This concept has been developed through a complex development history, and yet still appears workable and technically sound. That concept may be outlined as follows: First: The solids transport velocity is the fundamental basis for slurry launder design. Second: The stream configuration, hence the launder size, is integrated with the solids transport velocity so that the actual stream velocity exceeds the solids transport velocity. Use of electrical power in the bituminous mining industry has increased many fold during the last few decades. Rapid changes have also occurred in mine electrical power systems in order to meet the demands from highly mechanized mines. Fires, explosions, and deaths due to electrocutions are the primary hazards due to the underground use of electricity, although there has been a marked decrease in the fatality rate from electrical accidents. However, efforts to eliminate electrical hazards and to insure trained manpower for better distribution, utilization, and protection of the electrical systems cannot be relaxed. In this article, 200 fatal accidents that occurred during the period from 1955 to 1970 have been analyzed. Accident frequency has been correlated with the size of the mine and of the work force, and with age and work and task experience. A strong negative correlation has been established between task experience and accident frequency. Though the available data permitted only a limited analysis, need for improvements in electrical power technology and for better education and training has been identified and discussed. Missing information in accident statistics is outlined and suggestions for better hazard analysis are presented.

IN spite of the uncertainty in the bituminous coal industry during 1933, progress worth recording has been made. Along with other industries, coal has felt the effects of business stagnation, but even in the worst weeks of the past four years, .the total production of bituminous coal in the United States was seldom less than half the production in some of the best weeks of the more prosperous years, a record better than that of many industries. However, the competition of other fuels and sources of power, together with the increased efficiency in the use of coal, has brought anxiety to producers. This has resulted in pressure for reduction of costs, not always by the wisest means. On the other hand, the effort to survive has directed increasing interest toward research, a wholesome development in a difficult situation. Wages, limitation of hours of labor, and the NRA have occupied much time and thought. Following a period .of wage cutting paralleling price cutting, the industry found itself rather suddenly faced by the President's Agreement, followed in due course by the Code, and then in many places by the agreement with the United Mine Workers. Although there is still some uncertainty in regard to the detailed working out of the new arrangements, there seems to be an honest endeavor by the signatories to the Code and Agreement to work them out in a straightforward manner.

Quantification of size, shape and composition has been one of the more difficult areas for those concerned with fine particle processing of coal.' Image analysers fed by optical microscopes and by scanning electron microscopes possessing backscatter detectors and energy dispersive facilities now offer techniques to improve the speed and precision of previous methods. This paper discusses the methodology and procedural difficulties associated with the microanalysis of coal. Photographs show display quality on the image analyser monitor and the equipment mentioned. Data illustrating several of the procedures are included. The major portion of data for design and operation of plant for fine particle processing depends on information regarding size, shape and composition of granular material. The lower limits of particle sizes become more important as lower grade deposits are mined. Because of the trends towards treatment of finer materials, the use of image analysis offers advantages in time, effort and accuracy. As energy becomes more critical, the above applies especially to coal processing. The Zeiss Microvideomat 2, a leading member of the second generation instruments, is now available for image analysis. There is a precision television scanning system with monochrome camera, display, control panel and central processor (see Figure 1).

The iron ores of Canada have attracted more or less attention in this country for a number of years ; and having had an opportunity this past summer to examine some of them, especially the magnetic ores, I have thought it might be of sufficient interest to the members of the Institute to put on record some of my observations. The region examined contains, for the most part, only the rocks of the Laurentian system. Much of it was originally covered with a dense growth of pine, which interfered with successful prospecting for ores. However, after the best of the timber had been cut off, fire generally got into the bush and cleared it up pretty well. This, besides making travelling about easier, exposed large surfaces of rock, and rendered the work of the prospector far more liable to be rewarded with success, while removing many of its hardships. The general appearance and productiveness of the land have, however, been far from improved by this process. It would be difficult to find a more desolate-appearing country than some of these pine woods after fire has been through them. The country examined may be, for convenience, divided into two

DOUBT in anyone's mind that this is the age of metals, industrially speaking, could easily have been dispelled by attending the National Metal Congress in Chicago, Sept. 22 to 26. Iron, copper and aluminum; zinc, lead and nickel, often alloyed with each other or with some of a dozen minor metals, make the materials without which the modern world could not run. Science, pure and applied, is doing marvels in finding new mixtures, new alloys to meet new needs; in developing new means of rolling, fabricating, casting and welding metals cheaply-and effectively. These and related matters were the subject of 100 papers presented at 33 seperate sessions of the organizations that participated in the congress.

IT is popular today to dramatize in a journalistic spirit, some particular factor among the causes of unemployment. Naturally the time chosen for such emphasis is usually when the factor in question is temporarily a particularly active one. A few months ago, in the unemployment then current, we saw largely the results of a healthy acceleration in changes in processes, greater efficiency, a more intensified use of labor-saving devices, perhaps also a change in products. So we have been hearing a great deal about the influence of mechanization on unemployment, the so-called technological unemployment. Many talk as if this kind of unemployment were a wholly new phenomenon, for- getting that it is a constant process in a growing industrialism, though it sometimes becomes more pronounced. At other times one would think that seasonal unemployment is the only type of unemployment, and then again the fashion changes and we hear .about nothing except cyclical unemployment. Every few years there seems to be a different fashion in labelling the germ supposed to be the cause of unemployment.

PLAIN mining engineers usually avoid any gathering of geo¬physicists because of the incomprehensibility of their discussion to the uninitiated. This being so, gradients, gravity and gammas will be deferred to the end of this review, the first part of which will be devoted to what has been done in applying geophysics to the solution of real field problems. From the West, J. J. Jakosky reports that International Geophysics has had its activities fairly well 'divided between mining (both placer and lode), oil structural work, and clans-site and reservoir investigations. In oil exploration, electrical methods are used for depths down to 2500 ft., beyond which they utilize seismic methods. They find in their placer work that the many 'magnetic anomalies encountered in the bedrock of the Southwest render the electrical techniques more satisfactory, and with them they are obtaining thickness and tonnage of gravels, depth to and contour of the underlying bedrock as well as important structural features therein, and water-table elevations.

M Y DUTIES, as a member of the Department of Franco-American War Cooperation of the French High Commission were to study the copper and brass industries of America from the mining of the various non-ferrous metals to the semi-finished, or finished materials. In the pursuit of these studies, it was my privilege to visit a number of industries and organizations in different parts of the country. I first visited most of the Eastern copper refineries that were supplying the Allies with vast amounts of metal. These works are producing their material by the multiple or the series process, although the first method predominates. But, regardless of the process employed all the plants attain an exceptionally high standard of quality in their production. One of the points that particularly attracted attention was the manner in which improvements could be traced from the older worlds to the more recent ones. The impression was that, thanks to a spirit of broad-minded cooperation between the principals of the companies and frequent exchanges of views between members of the staffs, all persons interested benefitted by the experience thus gained, to the advantage of the community at large.

THE benefits derived from stabilization of industry that might possibly be attained through some scheme of centralized economic planning have been much discussed of recent months, and opinions on the subject range from those who believe that some agency like the War Industries Board would be practicable to create and wholly beneficial in effects, to those who are equally convinced that none of the suggestions so far advanced are at all practicable, or likely to be productive of more of good than of evil. The discussion has been on the general topic, but-many of those who have written or spoken on it have introduced economic problems of the pinera1 industry; for example, Newton D. Baker, who referred to the coal industry in his address on economic planning at the Williamstown Institute of Politics on July 31, and then went on to say, "Industrial progress is made by the development of new things, but new things upset the equilibrium of any plan. Who could have planned the industrial effects of the development of the railroads, or the economic changes which you have seen attend the development of the internal combustion engine. Obviously, unless we are prepared to put world economics in a strait-jacket and, like the encyclopedists, write its full history on the theory that further progress is impossible, no such plan could be made for nations which are forging ahead as is entirely rational for nations which are still catching up."

MECHANIZATION is being developed to some extent in every coal field in the United States and it is rather difficult to say which State or section of the country has made the greatest advancement. Statistics now being compiled for 1928 will show the tonnage mined, the amount of equipment used in each of the coal-producing States, and the comparative tonnages and percentages of total tonnage mined in each of these States, and will reveal which field is making the greatest advancement as far as quantity of production is concerned. However, while the tonnage figures are of great importance there-are other phases of coal-mine mechanization, such as the types of equipment, the mining methods and coal bed conditions, which are of equal interest. The change from hand-mining practices in all of the various operations from the face to the railroad cars is, perhaps, more indicative than any other one thing of the real progress being made.
