Many years ago the late Sir Frederick Bramwell, a distinguished engineer, formerly in charge of the metallurgical and gun-making department of the Woolwich Arsenal, England, determined to break up a large number of cast-iron mortars of an obsolete type that had been in stock for years. It was then reported to biro that it was found to be much more difficult to break these old gun castings under the "drop" than it was to break similar gun-castings recently made, under his own supervision; he changed the.. composition of the iron and still found that whenever castings made recently were broken up (on account perhaps of superficial defects) great disparity was observed in apparent strength between the old and new castings. As shafts and tunnels move deeper levels in underground mining, development planning becomes more complex. The most serious problem is the aggravation of environmental conditions due to the imposition of higher-than-natural temperatures upon exposed strata. Since such a problem is a potential hazard to health, safety, and production, the authors have developed a system of computer-derived ambient-air temperature data for every major point of an underground mine under a given set of conditions. This system is comprised of two subsystems: 1) Ventilation network analysis, 2) Estimation of air - current temperature. The former is based on the Hiramatsu-Oka method, an improvement of the Scott-Hinsley method. The Hiramatsu-Oka method allows fast convergence and consideration of various fan characteristics. The latter subsystem considers heat radiation from strata, and the humidity. In several tests conducted at Besshi and Sazare Mines of Japan, the computer-derived data correlated with actual conditions.

Among the technical problems in AEC's Project Plowshare is the necessity of determining the precise effects of nuclear blasts in all kinds of ground formations. This calls for extensive in-situ sampling with full core recovery. In the exploration drilling that often precedes a new test detonation, the AEC and its contractors have applied both novel and established sampling techniques in many new ways, giving improved core recovery and reduced costs in all subsurface sampling and testing. Unique among these new techniques is one that achieved full recovery and virtually undisturbed samples from near-surface layers of unconsolidated boulder-strewn alluvium. This approach involves a combination of oilfield and mining core drilling equipment. Oilfield heavy drill collars, rotary stabilizers and thick, vibration-reducing oil emulsion drilling mud were used in combination with the precise hydraulic feed control, fast (over 300 rpm) bit rotation, light drilling weight, hard rock core barrels and multi-step diamond bits that are common in mining industry diamond drilling.

THE high standards of living and improved national security that industrialization can bring are so evident that no country can be named that does not cherish the hope of industrializing. With such a universal aim, why do many countries unable to develop their own industries accomplish so little toward attracting the foreign private investor, who alone can provide them with the necessary capital and skill? Obviously, because they fail to under- stand what constitutes a favorable climate for investment, because they have false notions about being exploited or dominated by the foreign investor, or because they are so nationalistic they refuse to permit outside assistance. The purpose of this paper is to aid the citizens and policy makers of developing countries in achieving their aims, by defining the conditions which en- courage investment and portraying the results of a policy of encouragement. "It appears to me that the chief progress in milling operations in America have been made in the steady improvement of existing practice through both higher extractions and increased efficiencies of operations rather than by the development of new processes. The recent rapid development of sink-float, or heavy-medium separation, however, is an exception, and is becoming increasingly used to permit the economic treatment of certain low-grade ores that otherwise could not profitably be mined. The use of spirals and of small cyclones, both of which employ the principle of centrifugal force, show promise of increasing adoption through their application and efficiency in special cases." So did our distinguished colleague, O. A. E. Jackson, consulting metallurgist for the Union Corporation and president of the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa, summarize his impressions of a recent tour which he made of various metallurgical and milling plants in North America. I believe that all mineral dressers will agree with Dr. Jackson's concise conclusions.

At the recent SME Fall Meeting in Salt Lake City, Robert M. Jimeson, Physical Science Administrator of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, cited the research programs underway in the Bureau's Division of Coal Research, and outlined their current status. These research programs have been selected by the Division because of their relative value and high probability of success in contributing to the conservation of the Nation's coal and to the expanded use of coal in current or new markets. Since about 50% of coal consumption in the United States is in the production of electric power, 20% in production of metallurgical coke, and over 20 % by industry in producing process steam and power, the Bureau has placed much emphasis on research that will maintain coal's leadership in these established areas. This emphasis is reflected in the projects discussed on these pages. Bear in mind that this survey is not all-inclusive. Other projects underway include studies on furnace performance factors, improved burner design, and other critical boiler work which can be used immediately by industry to improve efficiency of current practices in power generation; other investigations are aimed at reducing fireside deposits and corrosion of boiler and super- heater tubes, fly ash utilization, and control of SO, from flue gases (a major step in preventing air pollution). These plus many other projects during the past years have served to focus attention on the fact that the U. S. Bureau of Mines is presently making the largest single contribution to this Nation's coal research effort.

INTRODUCTION What is automation? Why automate? Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines automation as "the automatically controlled operation of an apparatus, process, or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human organs of observation, effort, and decision." This definition gives an implied answer to the second question, "Why automate?" Automation, automatic control devices, and process control equipment receive their justification in supplementing or replacing manpower, which results in decreased operating costs. In the past, processes were operated with the minimum amount of instruments needed merely to guide operators. Processes were manually con- trolled by the operator on the basis of simple temperature, pressure, flow, and level indications on a panel. Today the tendency is to design a new plant to operate in a fully automatic manner according to a preset pro- gram utilizing a minimum of manpower. In addition to this direct cost reduction in manual labor, increased equipment capacity results from uniformity of flow and uniform control of process variables. This control eliminates or minimizes surges and permits equipment to be operated at or near its ultimate capacity and, for a given material throughput, permits the use of smaller process equipment. Automatic control, therefore, be it in the field of coal processing or in any industrial field, is simply a problem of economics. Control equipment is justified in terms of its contribution toward increasing productivity, increasing profit margins, or producing a new and salable product at a profit. Instruments and control devices can be divided into two general groups: (1) units which measure and (2) units which both measure and control a process variable.

The rise of drain holes drilled from a well to improve productivity is becoming increasingly common. This paper presents data on the productivity increase that may he expected. The data were obtained by use of an electrolytic tank mode1 of a reservoir. Parameter varied in the study to show their effect on productivity include the length, number, and arrangement of drain holes, formation thickness, and damage near the well-hore. The most important results are that very large increases in productivity can be expected only ill damaged wells. The distance, to which drain holes penetrate is of primary importance. Additional length is more effective than increasing the number of drain holes. INTRODUCTI O N In planning the use of drain holes to improve productivity, it is important to he able to estimate the increase in production that can be obtained for a given expenditure. It is also important to know what combination of parameters related to the use of drain holes can he chosen to give the largest production increase. This paper presents data on the productivity increase that may be expected, as obtained by use of an electrolytic tank model of the reservoir. In this study, :! number of parameters were varied to show their effect on productivity. These included the length, number, and arrangement of the drain holes. The presence or absence of a damaged zone of low permeability around the well-bore and the thickness of the producing formation were also considered. The productivity increase that might be expected due to drain holes is presented as the ratio: productivity of a well after drain holes are drilled and completed to the productivity of the same well in an undamaged state without drain holes. The symbol Q/Qo is used to represent this productivity ratio. Thus, the comparison in each case is with a formation of uniform and undamaged permeability. Additional notation includes I;, for the radial extent of the damaged zone, which is assumed to be cylindrical and concentric with the wellbore. Thus the effect of an actual block is approximated by a discontinuous varia-tion in permeability. For purposes of this paper, the permeability within the damaged zone, denoted by kb, is assumed to be 1/25 that in the remainder of the formation, or k. A necessary assumption in making comparative tests using an electrolytic model is that reservoir flow behavior can be approximated by single-phase, steady-\tate flow according to Darey's Law. In addition, the formation must be assumed to be homogeneous with equal horizontal and vertical permeability. The well-hore diameter in this study is assumed to be 11¾ in. and the drainage radius of the well equal to 500 ft. The drain holes are considered to have been completed without damage. BACKGROUND Homestake Mining Company began milling operations at the Bulldog Mountain Mine near Creede, Colorado in 1969. The Bulldog Mill, rated at 350 tpd, produces a bulk flotation condentrate assaying about 180 oz/T Ag and 20% Pb, from heads of about 16 oz/T Ag and 2% Pb. The circuit is straightforward with two-stage grinding to 1-5% plus 65 mesh, followed by rougher and cleaner flotation. Reagents used are Z-6, Z-11, Aerofloat 242 and Aero Promoter 404, with an Aerofroth 65-MIBC mixture for a frother. Additional information on the geology, mine and mill are available in references (1) and (2). A flow sheet for the mill and CIP plant together is attached as Figure 1. Final flotation tailings normally vary from 1.5 - 2.0 oz/T Ag. These tailings are cycloned to produce sand for underground backfill. After cycloning, the sands are repulped and given a final scavenger float. This sand scavenger recovers a small additional amount of silver which recycles back to the main flotation circuit. The tailings are recycloned and pumped to the mine or, if the mine cannot accept sand, to tailings. The majority of the silver in the flotation tailings exists in the fine fractions; cycloning upgrades the slimes and lowers the assay of the sand. The sand, after scavenging, typically assays 0.5 oz/T Ag, and the slimes assay about 3.0-3.5 oz/T Ag. John D. Price (Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp., Pueblo, Colo)—The paper on the coal fields of the Oaxaca district as prepared by engineers Toron and Cortes-Obregon of the staff of the Bank of Mexico bears witness to the thorough and careful way in which the men associated with this organization perform their work. There is little to be added to their paper in way of discussion other than to confirm and amplify some of their statements. Since the only extensive and well-developed field of coking coal lies in the northeastern section of the country adjacent to Sabinas in the state of Coahuila, it follows that blast furnace plants would be located in that same region. Two such plants are now operating at Monterrey and Monclova, using coke produced at the Sabinas district mines. But the nearer of these two plants is 600 miles from Mexico City and even farther from the center of population. Transportation of products from these mills to the market area is therefore expensive, both because of the distance and the difficulty of the terrain over which it must be carried. The development of an integrated steel industry closer to the center of population has therefore long been a goal toward which the Mexican technicians have been striving. While the presence of coal of some grade has been reported in many of the states, and many ideas have been advanced regarding its possible uses in iron and steel production, deposits of anthracite in Sonora and the various coals of the Oaxaca district as reported on in this paper are the only ones that have been explored in a serious manner. The coking coal from the Mix-tepec zone appears to offer promise of producing a coke which could be used in a standard blast furnace. Several problems are indicated, however: 1—The ash in the coal is high as mined, but indications are that it can be washed to an ash content of 15 pct with a recovery of 70 pct of washed coal. 2—Such washing would increase the volatile content from 17.4 pct to about 20 pct, and in a byproduct oven this should give a coke yield of close to 80 pct with an ash content of coke under 20 pct. 3—A free swelling index of 5 appears low for a good coking coal, and below that of the coals from the Sabinas district, which show between 6 and 9. But washing of the coal should result in an improvement in this regard; in the United States coals from Utah with an index even lower than 5 have made a usable coke. 4—A coal with volatile as low as 17.4 in raw coal and 20 in washed coal would come close to being classed as a low-volatile rather than medium-volatile coal, and low-volatile coals are notorious for their high expansion properties. Several plants in the United States are making coke from straight medium-volatile coal of 26 to 28 volatile content, and one at Rosita,, Mexico, from coal of 25 volatile. But no plants to my knowledge are using coal as low as 20 volatile. Since the Rosita coal appears to be a borderline coal from the angle of its expansion properties the coking of one of the straight lower volatile must be approached with caution. 5—There are few coals possessing any degree of coking properties which cannot be used in coke production by careful attention to its preparation and blending. The fact that coals of other types are available in this same region make improvement through blending very possible. 6—There are other workable methods of reducing iron ore other than the conventional coke-blast-furnace method. These will not be discussed here but it is known that their use has been considered. The technicians of not only Mexico but also of the other Latin American countries are keenly aware of their natural resources and their national needs. This paper emphasizes the fact that the Mexican technicians are working on their problem and attempting to speed the day of self-sufficiency for their country. Salvatore Cortes-Obregon (author's reply)—I wish to thank Mr. Price for his kind remarks. The Mixtepec coal as shown in Table II has 30 pct ash and a free swelling index of 5, but when the same coal is washed to 15 pct ash it has a free swelling index of 8 to 9 and the volatiles increased from 17.4 to 20.7 pct. A satisfactory coke has been produced from blends made in the Mexican laboratory using at least 40 pct of the Mixtepec coking coals with the other Oaxaca non-coking coals. Koppers in Germany report good coke obtained from the Oaxaca coal with a blend of 80 pct Mixtepec coal. Consideration is being given the possibility of using methods other than the conventional blast furnace for the reduction of iron ore near the Oaxaca area; electric furnaces appear promising. The non-coking coals could be used to produce cheap electric energy and the coking coals to make metallurgical coke.

The development of new processes and methods by The Pennsylvania State University to improve slate quarrying technology has centered in recent years on cutting and sawing stone in the quarry to eliminate a second cutting process in the mill. Two machines exhibit promise for this work: 1) a circular saw mounting diamonds or hard inserts to produce smaller sizes of stone and 2) a chain saw with insert cutting teeth to produce stone in the larger dimensions. Prototype machines have been constructed and tested in several Pennsylvania slate quarries, and one commercial installation has been operated for several months with a circular diamond saw. Other kinds of dimension stones may be cut by these saws. Research at Penn State has begun to study the fundamental cutting action of rotary tools or saws in slate and other dimension stones. A laboratory drill press is being instrumented to permit thrust-torque-rotational speed us penetration rate studies of single tooth cutting surfaces on stone. Machinability studies of slate conducted with tungsten-carbide inserts have been performed. The dimension stone industry generally accepts the rather basic premise that the larger the block removed from the quarry, the more practical and economical the operation. Thus, the concept of cutting to size any dimension stone while it remains in place in the parent bed would receive little consideration from the majority of members of the industry. However, the slate industry, which is usually considered a separate member of the dimension stone family, is pioneering in the development of an in-place sawing method. Before any final decision can be reached concerning a proposed new system, it is essential to take a long, hard look at the present method of operation in order to determine if the new system is indeed an improvement or even desirable. In the following section is a brief description of present quarry practice in the slate quarries of eastern Pennsylvania. PRESENT METHOD OF QUARRYING SLATE In the numerous slate quarries of Lehigh and Northampton Counties of Pennsylvania, the grain and cleavage of the slate are most often at right angles to each other; if a third surface is broken at right angles to these two natural planes of weakness, blocks of more or less rectangular shape can be separated.' In conventional quarrying a large calyx core drill prepares holes of 36-in. diam in which wire-saw standards are positioned. By wire sawing between strategically located core-drill holes, large sinks or benches of virgin slate are opened up. The sides freed by wire sawing will vary from quarry to quarry but generally are rectangular in shape with dimensions averaging 20 ft in length and about 15 ft in depth. Some quarries are fortunate in having a joint or natural parting to work to, which of course diminishes the amount of core drilling and wire sawing required. Once the various benches have been developed either through wire sawing alone or through a combination of wire sawing and natural jointing planes, the block removal proceeds in the following manner. A plug hole is drilled in the block with a compressed-air hammer and a feathering chisel is inserted in the hole to cause a fracture of the rock either with or against the grain as indicated by the positioning of the so-called feathers. This operation is referred to as sculping. After a block has been freed with and against the grain by means of wedging from the cross fracture with long bars or levers, the block is further freed along the cleavage plane by shimming it up with small wooden pieces in an operation known as styling. A large steel loading chain is wrapped around a block thus freed and the chain is attached to the wheel of an overhead cable. The block is then hoisted vertically to the cableway and moved along this cableway laterally to the lip or edge of the quarry. THE education of adolescents to perform the duties and assume the responsibilities of maturity has been a characteristic of human society since the dawn of history. In the beginning the members of the immediate family performed this function, and in modern life they still have an important part in it. Possibly religion was the first field in which education began to be functional; young people were sent for instruction to a teacher who had a broader and deeper knowledge of the subject than was possessed by the family. It does not seem necessary for our purpose to attempt to determine how, when, or where instruction in the practical arts first' began to become functional, and the brief outline which follows must suffice. The discovery and utilization of mineral substances to improve and maintain the conditions of human living is a practical art, which must have had an almost accidental origin and have been developed by empirical experiments. We do not know, nor would it be useful to try to fancy, how men first learned that they could make use .of mineral substances to their benefit, but how- ever that knowledge was initially gained it was certainly trans mitted through instruction in the family. At first such activities must have been merely a .minor part of the making of a-living, but in time those who excelled found it better to devote them-

IN presenting the medalist, Scott Turner, director of 'the Bureau of Mines, said in part: "Mr. Blaylock is a Canadian by birth, training, ex-perience and preference. He was born in the Province of Quebec, graduated from McGill University in 1899, and immediately thereafter became an employee of the company for which he is now general manager. His outstanding achievements have been the acquisition for his company of the Sullivan mine, and the organization of a metallurgical staff, which, under his leadership and personal direction, solved the difficult problems pre-sented by the extraordinarily complex lead-zinc-silver ores of the Sullivan mine. "By title only, I will suggest to you the high lights of his career: (1) Development, of the great mine at Kimberley, and a huge plant at Trail. (2) Discovery and application of a successful differential flotation process for Sullivan ore which had previously not re-sponded to any process. (3) Improvements in lead-blast-furnace and refinery practice. (4) Development of an electrolytic process for treatment of zinc concen-trates. (5) Development of an electric-furnace-smelt-ing-method for zinc-plant residues. Besides this, we recognize his great organizing ability, his gift of leader-ship, and the cooperative spirit he always displayed.

The steel industry is facing an unprecedented challenge. I would like to point out the role that flotation technology could play in meeting this challenge by providing high quality raw materials to the steel industry. Of all the technology available to a blast furnace operator, raw material preparation is by far the most important. Raw material preparation has been a key to the success of the Japanese steel industry. The foremost proponent of better raw material preparation was Professor Joseph at Minnesota. He gave a Howe memorial lecture to the AIME audience in the early 1950s, prepared from the lecture notes that he gave in his classes. At about that time he was invited to Japan. It is ironic that the Japanese steel industry listened and made it a success. In order for our steel industry to be competitive, first we must supply high quality and uniform quality raw materials to improve the efficiencies of our blast furnaces. Where does flotation fit in to the iron ore industry then? First, as a primary means for concentrating for oxidized iron ores. Second, to touch up magnetite concentrates for the removal of the last few percent of silica. And third, in the preparation of super-concentrates for direct reduction.

Most ingots complete solidification vertically rather than transversely. This conclusion is based on complete solidification patterns of big-end-up and big-end-down ingots developed from dumped and split ingots. New mechanisms for segregation in ingots are proposed. Internal soundness in ingots is found to depend upon adequate width of vertical core. A LTHOUGH it has long been recognized that the A internal soundness of ingots is principally been recognizedthatthedependent on the process of solidification, knowledge of this process is still only fragmentary. The mechanisms causing the several types of segregation in ingots, which mechanisms are necessarily related to the solidification process, are not well understood. In absence of a better conception of the solidification process, it seems hardly surprising that mold design varies widely. Guiding principles for mold design are needed. At stake in the improvement of ingot quality are not only improved properties of steel but also appreciably higher yields of sound steel, which would considerably decrease manufacturing costs. In the present study, following a general description of the several types of segregation in ingots, Fig. 1, complete solidification patterns of a big-endup and a big-end-down ingot, including the zones of accelerated solidification, have been reconstructed. In both ingots, a core of vertical solidification extends from the base cone to the hot-top junction. Based on the finding that ingots complete solidification vertically rather than transversely, as has been previously assumed, new mechanisms for segregation in ingots are proposed. Internal soundness in ingots is found to depend upon the width of the vertical core, which in turn depends principally upon the width to height (w/h) ratio of the ingot. Solidification patterns of ingots are of three general types: 1—those in which vertical solidification does not reach the top, 2—those in which vertical solidification just reaches the top of the ingot, and 3—those in which vertical solidification reaches the top some time before transverse solidification would reach the middle of the ingot, so that a vertical core of definite width at the top of the ingot is developed. Axial defects vary characteristically with the solidification pattern. Examples of ingots of each type are presented. Dumped ingot data reported by Nelson' have been used in developing families of curves of transverse and vertical solidification, and in deriving the effect of the w/h ratio upon the solidification pattern. Photographs of many ingots split at Homestead and at Duquesne Works, United States Steel CO., as well as those published by the British Iron and Steel Institute,' have been studied and analyzed. In the interest of brevity, only typical ingots of each type or classification from the above sources have been reproduced. Segregation in Ingots Segregation in ingots falls into three principal classifications: 1—lamellar segregation, as revealed in sulphur prints (Figs. 2 and 3); 2—zone segregation, or broad variations in composition; and 3— interdendritic, or microsegregation. The last class, of minor importance, is not considered here. When liquid metal cools, according to the theory of differential or selective solidification,2 metal of relatively high purity selectively solidifies first. THOUGH the largest volume use of natural gas has been, is. and in all probability will continue to be as a fuel for domestic and industrial heating, it has various market outlets, both as a fuel and as a raw material for the chemical industry. Natural gas is a preferred type of fuel where ease of control, fuel uniformity, and freedom from ash are of primary importance. Other industrially important uses are as a source of carbon black and as a fuel in various low-cost heating operations. Many other uses are of varying importance and new potential uses are continually being uncovered, some being of economic importance to the gas indus¬try as a whole, but most of them involve such small volumes of gas that they are only of passing interest. Since various products extracted from natural gas and recovered as by-products from petroleum refining, such as liquefied petroleum gas and fuel oil, are being utilized in many industrial and domestic heating applications, some consideration will have to be given such materials in order to present a reasonably complete story of the importance of natural gas. Some of these materials may prove to be transient competitors and will not be available when more profitable uses are found for them. Meanwhile, however, the potential volumes of such materials available, the current volumes being marketed, and the nature of the utilization are considered as constituting an essential part of the over-all fuel picture.

THE hydrometallurgy of special high-grade zinc as practiced by the Sullivan Mining Co. at its electrolytic zinc plant, Kellogg, Idaho, involves an important filtration step immediately following the leaching process. By means of the filtration the heavy zinc sulphate solution is separated from the residual products which remain after the zinc calcine has been dissolved in the sulphuric acid electrolyte. Because this plant uses the so-called high-acid, high-density process' for the production of First, the strength of the electrolyte (270g H,SO, per liter) results in a saturated zinc sulphate solution, having a specific gravity of 1.510 to 1.540, which must be kept warm during filtration because of its property of "seeding out" small crystals if allowed to drop much below 60°C. Second, the action of the "high" acid on zinc calcine under the temperature conditions of the leach (80" to 102 "C), although favorable to good zinc extraction, causes a considerable quantity of iron to be dissolved (8 to 18. g per liter) along with variable quantities of alumina and silica, depending on the grade and type of original zinc concentrates roasted. These three, iron, alumina, and silica, are almost completely precipitated during the neutralization of the leach (only a few. milligrams per liter of each remain in solution), so that the resulting pulp, instead of being a granular, sand-like product having a particle-size distribution dependent on the fineness of the zinc calcines leached, is in reality a slimy, chemical precipitate whose filtration characteristics constantly change depending on the amounts of iron silica, and other impurities, which are dissolved and reprecipi-tated. Third, the combination of supersaturated solution of high specific gravity plus a dense, semi-gelatinous residue creates a difficult washing problem requiring a positive displacement wash to liberate the zinc sulphate entrapped in the pulp. In a closed-cycle hydrometallurgical operation, such as practiced in this plant, the extent of washing is determined by the volum,e limitations imposed on the intermediate wash waters by the amount of "fresh" (or process) water which may be added. The volume of fresh water used for makeup purposes is limited to the amount which is lost during the closed cycle by evaporation in the leach, sulphate content of the calcines leached, moisture content of the residue, and spillage. The Burt filter as modified and improved by the Sullivan Mining Co. has successfully met and overcome these difficulties under a variety of zinc plant operating conditions since 1928. It might have many interesting applications to metallurgical fields other than that of electrolytic zinc, and its possible usefulness to hydrometallurgists in general warrants its description and discussion. The Burt filter is so named from its inventor who originated it in Mexico for pulp filtration in the cyanide process for gold and silver ores. While retaining the basic principle of Burt's earlier revolving pressure-type filter with internal filtration media, a number of modifications and improvements have been made in Sullivan Mining Co.'s installation. The Burt filter may be classified as a batch-type pressure filter in contradistinction to either the conventional vacuum-type filter, which depends on atmospheric pressure to force solution through a cloth medium, or to the filter-press, which employs whatever pressure is imparted by the pump delivering the liquid being filtered. The Burt consists essentially of a hollow steel cylinder about 40 ft long, 5 ft in diameter, resting horizontally, and capable of rotation about its long axis. It is supported on one end by a hollow trunnion and near the other end by a riding-ring and roller combination. The cylinder is lined with filter units each fastened against the inside of the shell and parallel to the long axis so as to form a hollow cavity into which pulp may be charged. A specific amount of pulp is admitted to the filter and a unique valving arrangement prevents the loss of pulp while air pressure forces the solution through a canvas medium to the discharge port of each filter unit. The residue is left on the surface of the canvas inside the cavity. The remainder of the filter cycle is concerned with washing the residue free of zinc sulphate, discharging it from the Burt, and preparing the filter for the next charge. A more detailed description of Burt filter construction, a typical filter cycle, and its operating characteristics when employed on material encountered in this plant will be given in that order. Description of the Filter: Fig. 1 shows a side elevation view of a filter with riveted shell construction. Since this drawing was made shells have been fabricated by welding, instead of riveting, with complete success. Shells are lagged on the outside to retain heat. THE hydrometallurgy of special high-grade zinc as practiced by the Sullivan Mining Co. at its electrolytic zinc plant, Kellogg, Idaho, involves an important filtration step immediately following the leaching process. By means of the filtration the heavy zinc sulphate solution is separated from the residual products which remain after the zinc calcine has been dissolved in the sulphuric acid electrolyte. Because this plant uses the so-called high-acid, high-density process' for the production of First, the strength of the electrolyte (270g H,SO, per liter) results in a saturated zinc sulphate solution, having a specific gravity of 1.510 to 1.540, which must be kept warm during filtration because of its property of "seeding out" small crystals if allowed to drop much below 60°C. Second, the action of the "high" acid on zinc calcine under the temperature conditions of the leach (80" to 102 "C), although favorable to good zinc extraction, causes a considerable quantity of iron to be dissolved (8 to 18. g per liter) along with variable quantities of alumina and silica, depending on the grade and type of original zinc concentrates roasted. The broad picture of petroleum refining engineering during 1934 continued to show a tendency in the direction of highly specialized processing improvements, particularly in manufacture of lubricating oil. The slowing up of the trend toward higher octane products in non-premium gasoline noticed in 1933 was definitely established as a fact by 1934 development, with just a slight indication of recession. No outstanding engineering achievements can be credited to 1934 in refinery cracking, unless the completion and successful operation of the 30,000-bbl. crude capacity combination cracking and skimming unit at Texas City, Texas, and a 20,000-bbl. similar unit in the East can be listed as such. Development and improvement was largely a continuation of previous lines of endeavor. Such trend as there is shows a continnation in the direction of very large integrated skimming and cracking units. A lessening of the cost of ethyl lead, coupled with the reaching of the octane number "ceiling," kept the subject of "reforming" low-octane gasoline into high-octane products pretty well in the background. Considerable interest, however, was shown during the year in cracking and polymerizing of refinery gases into high-octane motor fuel. The commercial development and application of this activity was greater in 1934 than during any previous year. Fair yields of gasoline of satisfactory stability and high antiknock value were reported, ranging from 2 to 8 gal. per 1000 cu. ft. of fixed refinery gas, yields varying with both the nature of refinery gas treated and processing methods. Assuming economic feasibility, regarding which there is still difference of opinion, gas polymerization offers the industry a possible outlet for its gases more in keeping with its basic chemical composition and value. The increased interest of railroads and heavy-duty truck and tractor manufacturers served to focus more attention on diesel fuels. The publicity given the Union Pacific diesel train, the Burlington "Zephyr" and others operated on special diesel fuels served to revive the intimations and fears of several years ago as to the ultimate replacement of the gasoline motor by diesel engines in even the passenger car field. UNEMPLOYMENT no longer finds its cure in pros-perity. Not only is there surplus labor in over-developed industries -like coal -mining, but more and more man, power is being released by technical im-provements in production. A new problem in industry has arisen: What is to be done with the labor dis-pensed with by better methods and more highly de-veloped equipment? Are luxury industries the logical outlet for our new unemployed? There has been a marked decline in employment in the manufacturing industries during 1927. Its extent is shown by the Bureau of Labor Statistics index, which receded from a high of 91.4 in March to 87.3 in October, with an estimated figure of approximately 85 in De-cember. This was a drop between the high and low points in the year of about 7 per cent, which means roughly that at the close of 1927 there were approxi-mately 600,000 fewer persons employed in manufac-turing industries than in March -of 1927, and upward of 400,000 less than in December, 1926. Does this de-cline reflect a swing toward industrial depression? Paradoxically it does not; the cause of unemployment at this time does not lie in a lack of prosperity, but rather is largely traceable to prosperity. Capital has been abundant and has gone back into production in the form of great increases in mechanization and new processing. Management is more than ever on the alert to improve methods, as well as to cut costs through reduction of personnel. Properly applied incentives and employee cooperation also have increased produc-tion per man. A new phenomenon in the industrial world-technological unemployment-is the result. Of course, there are added to those unemployed be-cause of the reasons just considered those affected by the coal strike, the period of shutdown at the Ford plants, and the reduction in expenditures by railroads and public utilities. This whole situation suggests that the problem of unemployment is not entirely solved by ironing out seasonal variations or by achieving business prosperity.
