The reduction of a metal in an aqueous solution may be defined in terms of its source of electrons. In electrolytic reduction electrons flow as a result of applied voltages. In other systems electron sources are reducing gases or metals of lower electron affinity. In the latter two cases it is increasingly evident that reduction is electro-chemical in nature in that electrons flow through one or more conducting phases even though the discharge reactions may not be rate controlling. Electrode processes impmtant in reduction and metal deposition are reviewed and extended to contact reduction by precipitation (cementation) on mme electropositive metals. Contact reduc- tion Processes are ancient in origin and represent techniques which have had successful application for hundreds of years. In spite of this, little has been understood in terms of the dynamic properties of such systems or of important side reactions. In recent years an increasing amount of laboratory work has been carried out on contact reduction and an attempt is made here to summarize the important findings. Undoubtedly the interest aroused recently may be attributed to improved reactor design which has demonstrated on a commercial basis accelerated metal recovery by taking advantage of important kinetic and chemical parameters. of gold cyanide (Au(CN)-), respectively. The most common method for the reduction of ions in solution is by electrolysis. The impure metal is made the anode and the ions are reduced at the cathode. Leach liquors containing reducible ions may similarly be reduced electrolytically using an inert anode. The latter process is referred to as electrowinning. In recent years hydrogen has been used successfully as a gaseous re-Metallurgical Society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). He was also a member of the Executive Board of the Metallurgical Society (AIME). In 1957 Dr. WADSWORTH was given the AlME Best Paper Award as coauthor of a paper on the roasting of sphalerite. On July 1, 1968 Dr. WADS-WORTH started an 24 month assignment in the Philippine Islands to assist in the development of graduate metallurgical engineering at the University of the Philippines. In addition to graduate teaching and curriculum development he will establish research programs to develop extraction processes for metals production in the islands. A general survey of the mechanical properties of commercially pure beryllium fabricated from powder by vacuum hot pressing and other consolidation methods is presented. The effect of fabrication method, grain size, strain rate, and directionality upon both room and elevated temperature tensile properties is reported. BERYLLIUM metal, in spite of its rather restricted use, has been the object of attention for many researchers in the past half century. However, such work was performed on special experimental lots of metal made in small quantities by a variety of reduction methods. Not until 1946 was there a substantial production of beryllium metal, and not until 1950 was there a steady production of a commercially standard beryllium in the United States. This output was both the result of a requirement of the Atomic Energy Commission for a high grade beryllium of consistent quality and the development of a powder metallurgy process, by the Brush Beryllium Co., known originally as Process Q, which yielded a fine grained beryllium suitable for fabrication. Because this powder metallurgy product, known as QMV, superceded other types of metal made previously and represents the great majority of beryllium in use today, it seems worthwhile to present the results of studies on the mechanical properties of this metal as currently made. To the design engineer and the metallurgist, beryllium has extremely interesting properties. It is as light as magnesium alloys while having a stiffness modulus 40 pct greater than steel and a strength-weight ratio superior to titanium and aluminum alloys and aircraft steels. The melting point is high, 1287°C (2348°F), and it has good corrosion resistance both in air and water. Also, it is highly transparent to X-rays and has good heat and electrical conductivity (electric conductivity is greater than 40 pct of Cu). To the atomic energy program beryllium is considered a valuable material because of its low neutron-capture cross section and high neutron-scattering cross section which make it a good moderator and reflector for the lower velocity neutrons. A major technical difficulty limiting the use of beryllium, especially in structural applications, has been its notch sensitivity and consequent room temperature brittleness. Kaufmann, Gordon, and Lillie1 have reported their work on the mechanical properties of beryllium performed from 1946 to 1950. They studied the room and elevated temperature properties of cast and extruded beryllium and extruded electrolytic flake, Table I. Cast and extruded alloys of 85 to 99 pct Be were tested also. They found that extruded metal developed good strength and appreciable ductility in the extrusion direction and that thermal treatment and alloying provided little improvement in mechanical properties. They concluded that preferred orientation and fine grain size were the means of obtaining optimum tensile properties in beryllium. Other investigators have measured and commented on one of the most striking mechanical properties of beryllium, namely, its abnormally low Poisson's ratio.2 Udy, Shaw, and Boulger3 presented the latest published survey on properties of beryllium but their information is based only on published data available before April 1949 and cites little information on metal fabricated by powder metallurgy

OUR present-day geological surveys show that 36 of our States are underlain with bituminous coal, covering a total area of 496,709 square miles. The North American continent possesses 69 per cent of the world's coal reserves, with the United States alone having an estimated 55 per cent. The American coal reserves, in tons, are calculated to he about 3,500,000,000,000 tons, of which we have exhausted about 1 to 1 1/2 per cent. If this coal were mined at the rate of the 1918 production-a record output of 579;000,000 tons-it would not be depleted for 4,000 years. The more easily accessible and high-grade coals would obviously be consumed much before this; some estimates are 100 years. The natural progress of the nation's industries up to 1910 encouraged on every hand the development of new mines, especially where cheap and easy access to coal measures was coupled with short hauls to the consumer. Over-development resulted, which is perhaps today one of the fundamental causes for the many difficulties faced by the coal industry, which is highly competitive; about 70 per cent of the production cost is labor. Flotation kinetics is the study of the variation in amount of froth overflow product with flotation time, and the quantitative identification of all rate con- trolling variables. With such variables maintained constant, the algebraic relationship between the proportion of mineral floated and flotation time is a flotation rate equation. This contains the constant values of all the rate determining variables implicit in one or more rate constants which must be evaluated from experimental data. The form or forms of the rate equation can either be deduced from assumptions or facts established about the mechanism of the process, or, more commonly, determined empirically or by analogy with similar rate process. (See pages 215 to 226 and 221 to 227.) The earliest contributions on flotation kinetics came in the mid- ~hirties,3,27,31 with interest increasing in recent years. The broad goal of these studies is the reduction of the total variability of a flotation system to equations among the individual variables, or among a lesser number of dimensionless groups.43 Although the goal is at present far from realization, its attainment will yield many practical advantages. The quantitative under- standing of the process should lead to improvements both in metallurgical results and flotation cell design. It should lead also to reliable methods for scaling-up* of laboratory and pilot plant results to full size operation without the need for expensive and time-consuming mill tests on commercial machines. Finally, this type of quantitative information will assist the automation of flotation cells and circuits as well as control by computers. Replacing present methods of control based on post-mortem assays and trial and error manipulation of reagents and cell variables by control through exact process analysis should yield higher levels of grade and recovery through reduction of the large variability of present-day results. CHEMICAL ENGINEERING ANALOGIES: Industrial flotation always involves flow of pulp through a series of stirred tanks. It thus bears formal analogy to many chemical engineering processes, the kinetics of which in flow systems has been studied for many de- cades.38,39,73,83 It will be useful to review these studies before considering flotation kinetics. INTRODUCTION I retired in 1977 and have been enjoying myself ever since doing odd jobs for various people - on occasions, politicians. I commend it to you as post retirement - get involved in situations that nobody else will take on. It produces all sorts of excitement, it is a lot of fun and, courtesy of the media, you provide great raw material for their current Punch and Judy shows. The example of the adventures in the Escondida financing made me think about the history of the minerals industry in the United States. In order to see more clearly what is going to happen in the future, we have to look at the past and what we have learned, and try to extrapolate from that a scenario for the future. This paper is about global material cycles and the financial needs of the extractive industries. Since about 2,000 years B.C. we have been living in the Iron Age. Since about 4,000 B.C. we have been living in the Copper Age. These have been the two foundations of modern industrial society. Understanding the use of metals and materials helps us understand the civilization in which we live today. Let me focus more closely on the United States, particularly in this century. In the first two-thirds of this century the United States was growing and expanding and developing. It was providing for its inhabitants a society which was enjoying the benefits of a rising standard of living, improved opportunities and the ability to support a population growing at quite a dramatic rate. It is still growing. In the Department of Commerce, there is a clock that shows how many people there are in the United States. It turns all the time; the numbers are going up. On January 21,1980, when Ronald Reagan was sworn in as President, the number on that clock was a little over 220 million, and in the last week before he left, it was travelling towards 245 million. During his period in Washington, we have added , the equivalent of one total state such as California. That gives the dimensions of the U.S. appetite for raw material inputs. The inputs are of critical importance. COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE During the first two-thirds of this century, the minerals sector enjoyed comparative advantages. There was a clear understanding of the importance of minerals enshrined in the tax legislation of the country from the early decades of this century - the depletion allowance. No other country identified as clearly that the supplies of minerals were finite. As they are used up, just as with a wearing-out machine, one must get capital back to replace the resource when the time comes. Within the last decade, that idea has been questioned and criticised. It is now seen as giving money away to a preferred part of the economy, instead of recognizing what depletion is all about. In previous times it insured that the U.S. always was able to regenerate the capital in its minerals industry, so that it could remain competitive. The U.S. had plenty of everything, including energy. We had a growing population. Equally important, we had an agriculture that led the world in productivity, even as far back as the turn of the century. It continues to do so. We still retain that comparative advantage, an ability to produce our foodstuffs in quantity and quality at excellent cost. Look at another ingredient of our comparative advantage, the energy position. We ran through the first two-thirds of the century with ever- decreasing energy costs. In the 1940s and 1950s the coal industry went into a decline. Why? Because the $3.00 - $5.00 a ton cost of mining coal in the U.S. represented relatively expensive energy. A ton of good grade bituminous coal contains 25 million BTU's. $0.20 a million BTU's represents $5.00 a ton at the pithead. That price was undermined by the increasing ability to find petroleum at even lower costs. At the apex of the growth of development of the American dominated

Miner-bolters, which combine mining and bolting functions into a single machine, are being developed by the US Department of Energy to improve production and productivity in coal mining operations. The authors have been studying possible production gains from the use of the Joy automated miner-bolter (AMB) in mine development using the computer simulation model "UGMHS" developed by the Pennsylvania State University. In a recent paper (Chugh, Campbell, and Parkinson, 1979) the authors discussed justification for the development of miner- bolter machines, assumptions and analytical procedures used in computer simulation, cutting, and bolting cycle times for an AMB, and production potential of AMB in four and five entry mine development sections. The effects of available operating time, haulage capacity, bolt installation time, and flush and staggered entry layouts on production potential of AMB were also discussed. In all cases, the production potential of AMB was compared to a full face continuous miner and an independent dual-boom roof bolter operating in a similar mine layout. Present Study In this study, the production potential of the Joy AMB in three and six entry layouts is presented. A three entry mine layout represents development entries in a longwall panel. A six entry layout represents development of main and submain entries in longwall mine development. Flush and staggered entries were considered in both layouts. The assumptions and analytical procedures used in this study were similar to those in the earlier study and are not presented in this paper. Only the results of the studies are presented here.

THE present study is intended as a preliminary statistical survey of the world's production of petroleum substitutes. The information presented is admittedly deficient. It is believed, however, that the increasing importance of these substitutes, particularly with Europe at war, justifies its presentation at this time, if for no other [ ] reason than to encourage enlightened pertinent discussion. The world's production in 1939 of petroleum substitutes-of which approximately 97 per cent are direct substitutes for motor fuels-is tentatively estimated at 108,000,000 bbl., or equivalent to the combined output of crude oil in 1939 of Rumania, Mexico and Colombia. With few exceptions, these figures of production represent also actual figures of consumption. The United States, owing mainly to its output of natural gasoline, leads all countries in the production of these products, with about 53 per cent of the total. In European countries, particularly Germany, the imminence of war in 1939 forced an increase in production and improvement of methods of manufacturing motor fuels, largely from coal, with the result that this country produced in that year over 20,000,000 bbl. of substitutes. Since the beginning of hostilities, substitutes have offered more and more the means of meeting the unfavorable balance between supply and demand in European [ ] countries; the increase in production of these products being at least in part offset by the systematic bombing of synthetic plants and oil storage. The source materials and the resulting substitutes are listed in Table I. The following are the approximate gross heat equivalents of some substitutes to barrels of gasoline:

In 1936 the Institute established the Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal, which will be awarded from time to time "for distinguished achievement in improving the technique and practice of finding and producing petroleum." These awards will be sponsored by the Petroleum Division. Captain Lucas was a pioneer in the oil industry, one of the early wildcatters and a leading mining and petroleum engineer. He was famous as the discoverer of Spindletop. He became a member of the Institute in 1895 and in 1913 was the first Chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the Institute, the forerunner of the present Petroleum Division. He also headed the Committee in 1914, 1917 and 1918. The first medal was presented at the annual dinner in 1937, Feb. 17, to J. Edgar Pew. That the chemical industries are alive to the situation that they now occupy in the sum of affairs is evident in the preparations being made by many firms for the Second National Exposition of Chemical Industries To be-held at the Grand Central Palace, New York City, during the week of September 25-30, 191 The list of exhibitors indicates that the Exposition is already twice the size of its successful predecessor. The American Chemical Society will hold its annual meeting during the whole week, the American Electrochemical Society has arranged to - hold its meetings on September 28, 29 and 30, and the Technical Association of the American Pulp and Paper Industry is also planning to meet during the week. The Bureau of Commercial Economics at Washington is again co- operating with the Exposition by arranging an elaborate program of motion pictures covering subjects dealing with the industries depending on chemistry. Many of these films will have their first showing at the Exposition. They will take the visitor through industrial plants, shops, manufactories, mines, etc., where visitors are never admitted; they will show operations that in ordinary light would never be seen; they will demonstrate more than any other kind of motion picture the great strides and improvement in the art of photography.

What do you think are the major problems that the mining industry is facing? While I don't have any intensive knowledge of the various problems that plague our industry, I know that they are all part and parcel of a more complex and fundamental question: What must we do to make mineral extraction successful, safe, and profitable? Obviously, as mining people, we must continue to expand our technical know-how and to make better use of it. In today's context, however, that is not enough. We must also improve the "public image" of the mining industry. Why? Because the key word in the term "public image" is: the public. Many people in our country and in Congress, for instance, are against strip mining-and some are even against underground mining. Pressures from the public, from voters, have affected past, present, and new legislation. And government controls can be a major problem in any industry, let alone mining. At first, people ask government to intervene, act, or resolve problems, even in management and labor contract negotiations. But later, after Washington gets involved, there are clashes between departments and personalities, and eventually there is resentment against the interference with mining operations or our daily lives.

THE heat treatment of the bronze composed of 88 per cent. copper, 10 per cent. tin, and 2 per cent. zinc, has been investigated by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose,1 and also by the U. S. Bureau of Standards.2 The results obtained by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose on dry-sand castings subjected to reheating followed by air cooling, or by quenching in water, are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Figs. 3and 4, have been plotted from values obtained by the Bureau of Standards on material of the same composition and treatment. Both investigations show that the ductility of the cast bronze is improved by heating to 700° C. and cooling in air, the strength not being impaired by this treatment. They are not in agreement, however, as to the effect of quenching, Messrs. Primrose reporting a decrease, and the Bureau of Standards an increase, in both strength and ductility when the cast bronze is heated to 600° or 700° C. and quenched.

THE following series of analyses, which may, be of interest to Bessemer-steel makers, is submitted as a contribution to the much-vexed discussion of manganese in Bessemer steel. They were made by the writer in the spring of 1881, at the works of the Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Company Limited, during a period of about eight days, part of, which time the rail-steel showed great variation in rolling qualities. During the first part of the time in question, it rolled well; later on it began to roll worse until, finally, it cracked very badly, reaching its worst stage. After this it rapidly improved until it again rolled smoothly. During this .time of transition 'from. good rolling to bad, and back to good again, the course of the manganese was followed' quite closely. It is the striking correspondence between these varying manganese contents and the differences in rolling which is here presented as worthy of notice. The other ordinary elements were determined occasionally, but showed no unusual variation Tim steel, in question, was ordinary rail-steel of about "the following composition : C=.35.P=.08.Mn=.98. To help management keep key machines or processes at peak efficiency, draglines, shovels and blast hole drills have been equipped with micro- processor based monitors. The dragline and shovel monitors log operating data such as energy consumption, bucket position, cab rotation and the clock time of key elements within each cycle as well as maintenance information. The output consists of maintenance and management data such as the number of cycles, average cycle times, swing angles, depths and downtimes. Extensive experimentation has shown that a blast hole monitor can provide a log of each blast hole in which the hard to fragment zones are indicated. The logs are printed on board the drill and serve as the design basis for decked loading of the holes. As a result, the fragmentation of the overburden has improved markedly with the same or less powder consumption. Mining is both exciting and rewarding-although at times somewhat frustrating-and we all can have real pride in our industry, in its people, and in its accomplishments. It is, however, with concern that I have noted a deterioration in this Country in what might be called mining's stature and in the growth of a belief in many quarters that our mineral reserves are rapidly approaching exhaustion. In other words, there is a popular image that we are fast becoming a "have not" nation in many respects and that the domestic mining industry can no longer be considered, in the vernacular of Wall Street, to offer much in the way of "growth potential." I do not subscribe to this hypothesis, nor do I believe that the record of the mining industry bears this out. However, let me add that we can, in time, talk ourselves into this frame of mind and we can hasten the day when this very well might come about by unnecessary and unwise legislation or regulation. My remarks today are basically designed to give my reasons for refuting this negative philosophy and to review our record. With your help, I know we can improve our image, and the public's recognition of our industry's peculiar problems.

One of the major improvements in ore grinding economics in North America has been the introduction of autogenous grinding. Pickands Mather & Co. has been active in the development of autogenous grinding since 1957. This early work led to the application of autogenous grinding to the Wabush mines ore in 1965, with the installation of six 24 ft diam by 8 ft long, 1750-hp mills. Development work recently completed in 1971 on another ore has led to the decision to install five 36 x 15-ft, 12,000-hp mills when this project goes ahead. Between these two decisions lies a tremendous amount of research, development and application of autogenous grinding to a variety of ores. The Pickands Mather Metallurgical and Research Laboratory in Hibbing, Minn., has tested ores from 9 different deposits in its pi- lot plant facility. Some of these deposits have as much difference within their own ore types as there is between the various deposits. Therefore, it is safe to say that over twenty different ore types have been tested and flowsheets developed for commercial applications. Of the nine projects, three are in operation. These are Wabush mines in Labrador, Canada,' Savage River mines in Tasmania,' and The Griffith mine in Red Lake, Ont., Canada.'

Standard free energies of formation of WO,, W O W20058 and WO3from oxygen and the lower oxide or tungsten have been determined in the tempel-ature range of 700° to 1220°C. A tentative W-O phase diagmm is presented based on the evidence that the oxide phases, "W18O49" and "W20058", are unstable at l~atm total pressure, below 585° and 485°C:, respectively. A HE need for a complete quantitative treatment of the phase equilibria of the W-O system has been establishedby metallurgists during the past few years. In an attempt to improve the endurance of tungsten exposed to oxidizing atmospheres at high temperatures, many research groups have studied the kinetics of tungsten oxidation. The reverse process, the reduction of the tungsten oxides to metal, has also been investigated to some extent. Regardless of the particular interest, metal to oxide or oxide to metal, a knowledge of the phase equilibria of the W-O system is required to properly interpret all of the kinetic observations. It should be possible to state the stable phases of the W-O system at any given values of the chemical potential of oxygen and the temperature.

Every one having practical experience in making heating-gas knows how much room there is for improvement,, in order to avoid not only the production of poor gas, when good gas is most wanted, but also the waste due to burning gas on top of the fuel-bed, and the loss of both time and fuel in cleaning.* The producer which I have recently designed, and with which I am now experimenting with every prospect of success, at the oreroasting kilns at Chester furnace, is intended to remove these difficulties as far as possible, and at the same time to be continuous in operation. I have not had it at work long enough to get beyond the stage of experiment; hence, I will only at this time explain it in a general way, and illustrate it with a drawing, promising a more elaborate paper if it becomes the practical success I anticipate. The features of the producer are : 1st. The round dome-shaped revolving bottom; and 2d. Metallic water-cooled walls in place of the usual brick lining. SUMMARY In the German hard coal industry, relevant parameters influencing strata control have been identified in many years of intensive research work. The research results allow the formulation of the technical requirements on the design of shield supports as a function of the geological and operational conditions the face machinery is subject to. Keys to strata control are support resistance adjusted to the individual conditions of application and the tip-to-face interval. The technology to implement these requirements in actual operation is available. The automation of the shield-advance work cycle, currently setting in, can further contribute to improve strata control. In doing so, however, we must not forget the demand for an unsophisticated and low-cost design of shield supports with high operational safety. INTRODUCTION The German hard coal mining Industry produces coal from flat and inclined seams in depths between 400 and 1,300 m. The coal is exclusively won by longwall working involving face lengths up to 280 m. The thickness of the seams being worked is between 0.7 m and 4.5 m. Coal winning is fully mechanized with drum shearers or coal ploughs; two, three, or four leg shields are predominantly used as supports.

Bureau of Standards.2 The results obtained by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose on dry-sand castings subjected to reheating followed by air cooling, or by quenching in water, are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The values for tensile strength have been converted from tons per square inch to pounds per square inch. Figs. 3 and 4, have been plotted from values obtained by the Bureau of Standards on material of the same composition and treatment. Both investigations show that the ductility of the cast bronze is improved by heating to 700' C. and cooling in air, the strength not being impaired by this treatment. They are not in agreement, howevcr, as to the effect of quenching, Messrs. Primrose reporting a decrease, and the Bureau of Standards an increase, in both strength and ductility when the cast bronze is heated to 600' or 700' C. and quenched.
