This machine is an improvement on the well-known endless travelling belt used for dressing slimes in many mills; the chief point of difference, and constituting the essential advantage of the present over the old form, is the application to the machine of a secondary agitating or shaking motion, in addition to the ordinary progressive motion of- the belt. In the machine as heretofore made, the inclined belt or apron moved slowly up against a thin stream of water and ore, depositing the concentrations carried over in a tank placed below, through which the belt travelled, of course, in a reversed position. By reference to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that in this main principle the new modification does not differ materially; but the means by which it is carried out are essentially different. WHEN the need for war work was ended, the late Mrs. Sidney J. Jennings felt that the members of the Woman's Auxiliary, who had worked together so successfully, would profit by having a common permanent aim through scholarship work, financed by annual contributions from the Sections. Under her leadership the Sections responded generously and the educational fund was started. Mrs. Jennings became the first chairman of the executive committee and so remained until her death. It was planned to begin with an award of $500 each year, and to pot aside 25 per cent of all moneys re¬ceived from the Sections to establish an endowed fund. In 1921 the first scholarship of a value of $500 per annum was granted, and an award of the same value has been made regularly every year since. It is called the Subscription Scholarship. The 25 per cent, which is set aside each year and carefully invested, is called the Engineering Education Endowment Fund. Three years ago this fund began to yield around $300 annually and this income has been used each year since to finance a scholarship under that name.

THE CHAIRMAN.-Thank you. Since the papers are rather closely related, I think rather than taking them one at a time we will entertain discussion on any of these problems at this time. W. A. REICH.*-We, of course, quite a while ago got the yellow light that Mr. Cole spoke of, and like everyone else immediately started to study silicon bronzes and brasses. We were interested in the silicon bronzes and brasses because we felt that in order to replace gun metal which makes up a large part of our use we needed something with an elastic limit at least equal to that of gun metal. That means at least 12,000 lb. per sq. in. This study was aimed only at tin conservation. Then we dropped the study of silicon bronzes because high purity copper which is needed in their manufacture became a scarce item. To make a long story short we have recommended to our designing engineers that they use 85-5-5-5 wherever possible because 85-5-5-5 we understand can be made entirely from scrap with little or no tin addition. 85-5-5-5 has a lower elastic limit than 88-8-4, so we felt that we would need another substitute material, a structural alloy with an elastic limit equal to that of 88-8-4, and we immediately turned to the manganese bronze type of alloy. The poor foundry properties of standard manganese bronzes were mentioned by Mr. Thieme and since we feel that high zinc content is largely responsible for this difficulty, our development is directed along the lines of uncovering a material with a lower zinc content and which gains its elastic strength from the addition of other alloying elements, such as, aluminum, manganese and iron. It must be possible to make this alloy entirely from scrap with no additions of scarce high purity material. I would appreciate an expression of opinion on how low we can go in zinc content with this type of alloy without seriously impairing the availability, and how high we can go in aluminum content without making use of aluminum restricted for that use. We assume that the maximum lead content must be placed at 1 ½ per cent to insure good availability and we feel that about I per cent of tin in the alloy would improve salt water corrosion resistance similar to the effect of tin in Admiralty Metal. Has anyone here had experience with the effect of tin and lead on the weldability of such an alloy? C. S. COLE.-What percentage of lead and tin? W. A. REICH.-About 1 per cent of lead and 1 per cent of tin. We are studying the weldability of the alloy but perhaps someone already has the answer. (Pause, no answer) The claim has been made that 1 per cent of lead can be added to certain silicon bronzes without impairing their properties. A silicon bronze with a low zinc content requires high purity copper in its manufacture but if say the 15 per cent zinc, 44 silicon balance copper alloy could be made, with a I per cent lead content, some quantity could be made from scrap. THERE are many who know The Lucky Tiger and will remember the 35-mile road from Esqueda, a station on The Nacozari Railroad in northern Sonora, Mexico. They will remember the box canyons of the Agua Caliente Mountains which are scarcely wide enough for two cars to pass; the Bavispe River which one hour may be a lazy trickle and the next a sweeping torrent, and the tortuous road up Tigre and Espuela canyons, now following the wash, now hugging some gigantic red cliff. It is still the same. From camp the view of the distant blue-gray mountains is the same. But one thing a visitor of a former day might miss: The hundreds of pack mules and burros, loaded with concentrates from the mill, which used to take most of the road and show up at the most inopportune places, have almost disappeared, replaced of course by the auto truck.

(Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) AT a number of mines in eastern Nicaragua, 3.5- and 5-ft. Huntington mills are used for grinding gold-ore after a preliminary breaking in jaw-crushers. The smaller mills are made sectional to facilitate transportation to the more difficultly accessible mines. The capacity of the smaller mills is about 20 or 25 per cent. that of the larger, but in proportion to the quantity of ore ground they require more power and are subject to greater wear. The notes herein given are from records of the performance of the larger mills, but, in general, apply to the smaller also. THE NATURE OF THE ORE. The ore occurred as a series of flat veins in a highly-decomposed rock, probably alaskite. The primary mineralization comprised pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and quartz; the oxidation-products of which were chiefly hydrated iron oxide or limonite, chrysocolla, azurite, and malachite. The kaolinization of the feldspar of the country resulted in the admixture of a great quantity of clay with the oxidized ore. The quartz was sandy, imbedded in the clay; and probably the greater part represented the residue from the crushed rock in the fissures after leaching, and kaolinization of the feldspar. There was little vein-quartz in the unaltered primary sulphide ore. Only the oxidized ore was mined for the gold that it contained in amounts that averaged $4 per ton. No specks of gold were ever seen in the ore, and the gold obtained by panning was always exceedingly fine. The amalgamation-bullion was about 800 fine in gold and 60 to 80 in silver. The ore delivered at the mill contained from 5 to 15 per cent. of moisture; during the rainy season the quantity was much greater. ONE of the methods for preparing a fiber-reinforced composite is that of directional solidification of a eutectic melt. Its major drawback lies in the fact that the matrix in this case is a pure constituent (or a terminal solid solution of fixed concentration) and the ratio of fiber to matrix volume is fixed. Only very few, if any, pure metal matrices possess technically useful properties, and the necessity for alloying is the inevitable consequence of this fact. Nevertheless, structures similar to binary eutectic ones can be obtained in higher-order systems by pseudoeutectic reactions of a type where crystallites and a solid-solution matrix are simultaneously precipitated from a liquid.1"3 Trials to solidify such alloys directionally—the matrix consisting of a solid solution of chromium, nickel, and silicon and the reinforcing phase being Cr3C2— will be reported elsewhere.4 This note describes constitutional studies carried out primarily to determine -the position of the pseudoeutectic and further to insure that no undesirable reactions between the reinforcing phase and components of the matrix occur in the solid state at elevated temperatures. In the investigation it was specifically desired to reinforce a matrix which is as close as possible to the 80/20 Nichrome composition with Cr3C2 to insure good oxidation resistance and improve the strength at high temperatures. No konstitutional information on the quaternary C-Cr-Ni-Si svstem in the range of interest was found in the literature. Nevertheless, the two most important ternaries c-cr-Ni5 and have been completely investigated. On C-Cr-Si some investigations have been conducted,7"9 and C-Ni-Si was studied with a few alloys in the course of the present investination 9 Eight alloys were prepared to investigate the changes in the constitution of the ternary C-Cr3Ce-yNi eutectic5 with silicon contents up to 10 wt pct. Five alloys were made with varying chromium and carbon contents around compositions containing -60 to 70 wt pct Ni and 5 to 6 wt pct Si. The latter alloys were designed to locate the y(Ni-Cr-Si-C)-Cr3C2 pseudoeutectic reaction and to determine the maximum chromium content in solid solution compatible with a two-phase equilibrium between y and Cr3C2 only. The alloys were prepared from electrolyte nickel, semiconductor-grade silicon, high-purity chromium (99.999 pct pellets), and semiconductor-grade graphite. They were melted inductively in high-purity alumina crucibles under flowing argon. Twenty-gram charges were prepared and investigated by optical microscopy (including hot-stage investigations), X-ray powder methods, and electronmicroprobe analysis. The alloys were studied in the as-cast condition and also after a homogenization annealing treatment of 48 days at 900°C in evacuated quartz ampoules. The structures of all alloys based on the ternary eutectic plus silicon in the as-cast state consisted generally of an inhomogeneous solid solution and at least two other phases. Annealing of the alloys showed that the solid solution was homogenized but that an incomplete solid-state reaction had taken place in all alloys with silicon contents over 5 wt pct. This reaction is clearly visible in Fig. 1 around the large Cr3C2 crystals (gray areas). Below this concentration, the alloys consisted of a homogeneous matrix and precipitates of Cr3C2 plus graphite, Fig. 2. The Cr3C2 was entirely unreacted here. INTRODUCTION The Department of Energy is cooperating with Snowmass Coal Company near Carbondale, Colorado to introduce the longwall mining method in moderate to steeply pitching coal seams in the United States. This venture is part of a coal mining research program directed toward development, trial, and analysis of mining technique8 to improve production and recovery in the more difficult mining conditions such as thick, multiple, and steeply pitchly seams found in the Western U.S. The project at Snowmass is the first attempt in the United States to operate a longwall in a steep coal seam. Plans are to mine three adjacent, successively downslope panels in the eight foot thick seam which varies in pitch from 27 to 33 degrees. During this work, researchers and mine engineers are expected to obtain answers to many engineering questions relative to panel design and development, selection of face equipment and beet operating techniques and procedures. They are also committed to obtaining hard data on costs, recovery, production, safety, and behavior of underground mine structure as the three panels are mined. This information is essential to future mine engineering and profitable mining of pitching Western coal reserves. Development of the first trial panel was begun in 1979 and completed in June 1981. The longwall mining equipment was then installed in the starting room and retreat mining begun on August 11, 1981. Project duration is expected to be about five years during which over tm million tons of coal will be produced. TRAINING The longwall mining method is new to Snowmass. For years the mine produced coal by room and pillar methods using conventional techniques to mine upslope rooms and Alpine F6A miners to cut entries and rooms on strike. Miners were experienced in room and - pillar mining from other mines. News of the longwall demonstration was received enthusiastically by Snowmass miners. Employee interest in the project was 100%. However, there was minimal longwall experience on site. In fact, most of the work force had not even seen a longwall. Mine and company management were well aware of the immediate need to develop trained longwall face mining crews and maintenance people qualified to work on longwall equipment and also expertise in longwall planning, equipment selection, power distribution design, ventilation requirements and panel development. The first approach to answer this huge deficiency in longwall mining experience was obviously training. Hence a training program directed toward those mining specifics most urgent to the beginning mining phases was initiated in mid-1980. Classroom lectures and hands on training, using instructors from equipment suppliers and available company longwall expertise, was conducted in longwall subjects to include face mining procedures, panel development, operation of equipment, equipment assembly and maintenance, electrical circuitry and controls, ventilation, move of longwall equipment, and safety procedures. At the same time, responsible engineers and foremen were sent on a tour of European pitching longwalls to see first hand how other mines working under similar seam conditions conducted their operations. Development techniques, types of equipment, methods for transport of men and materials, and ground control techniques were discussed with engineers, foremen and officials at each mine. This look at European longwall mining operations gave Snowmass good insight into the unique problems associated with longwall mining on 30' pitch. Mining considerations such as face conveyor/ support system slippage downslope, panel development, maintenance, safety considerations, manpower requirements, and haulage methods were covered with European experts

The new potash refinery of Duval Sulphur & Potash Co. produced its first tonnage of muriate of potash in November 1951. Full capacity was attained in early 1952. Excellent extraction efficiency is being obtained by the process, which is basically froth flotation. System temperature control is practiced and has proved to be of great metallurgical value through high potassium recovery and. low reagent cost. WHEN Duval Sulphur and Potash Co. recently entered the established potash industry, the vast amount of pioneer work essential in an entirely new endeavor was unnecessary. Thus it was possible to screen and assemble proved techniques into a highly efficient process based on the combined knowledge of the industry. It is hoped that the refinements Duval has added to these cumulative achievements will contribute to the rapid advance of the potash industry and related enterprises. The process selected utilizes as raw material syl-vinite ore typical of the Permian Basin. This ore is principally comprised of interlocked crystals of potassium chloride, about 40 pct, and sodium chloride. Also there is as much as 1 1/2 pct of dispersed clay slime which, because of its nature, highly complicates beneficiation of these ores. The refining method is basically flotation in which the mineral sylvite is floated away from the halite-clay gangue to produce a 60 pct K,O muriate of potash product for the plant-food trade. INTRODUCTION Activated charcoal has been used for several centuries in many capacities including the recovery, isolation and purification of various materials (1). The first use of charcoal in a gold metallurgical system was in the extraction of gold after chlorination (2, 3,4). The gold was dissolved in a chlorine system and subsequently filtered through charcoal. The application of charcoal with cyanide extraction was patented by Johnston (5) in 1894 and adopted commercially in Australia in 1897. The process consisted of dissolving the gold and silver in a potassium cyanide solution and passing it through a series of charcoal filters. The charcoal was subsequently smelted to recover the gold and silver. The interest in the use of charcoal diminished in the first part of the twentieth century as the practice of the use of zinc as a precipitating agent increased. However, in 1916, the Yuanmi Mine in Australia replaced their zinc precipitation plant with a charcoal adsorption plant. In 1926, Scott and Gross (7) of the U. S. Bureau of Mines con- ducted extensive research on the adsorption of gold and silver from cyanide leach solutions. Among their findings was the result that the most important factor in improving the adsorptive power of charcoal was heat treatment with oxidation by air or steam. The work of Zadra (8) in 1952 stimulated renewed interest in the use of activated charcoal in gold and silver recovery with the development of a method of recovery of the gold and silver from the charcoal other than its destruction by burning. An improved replica technique is developed for a nondestructive study of the nucleation and growth of fatigue cracks. Three different growth stages of a fatigue crack were observed. An initial stage of high growth rate is followed by a long period of very slow growth, until finally a third period of high growth rate leads to fracture. THE metal-fatigue process is of a very complex nature. The experimental approach towards fatigue is susceptible to many minor influences which, together with the unavoidable scatter in testing results, makes the interpretation a matter of extreme care. The generally accepted fact that, in a homogeneous material, the fatigue cracks start at a free surface indicates that surface studies may contri-but in an essential way to a better understanding of the fatigue mechanisms. Indeed metallographic observations of the fatigue phenomena have been very fruitful in the last decade. The study of extrusions, intrusions, and persistent slip bands has contributed much to the present knowledge of the early processes in fatigue.' The drawback of the current metallographic techniques lies in the fact, however, that either observations of fatigue phenomena had to be made in a destructive way after an only partly executed test or a sequence of observations on the same test bar was only possible on notched specimens.2 4 In both cases an uncertainty exists as to the nucleation and growth of the fatigue crack in an unnotched test bar, where the crack can start at any place of a large area and develops in a test bar, which is macroscopically

Since March. 1945, the Magnolia Petroleum CO. has drilled 39 wells in Southwest Coastal Louisiana. All wells were drilled within a comparatively small radius, but the area provides a large variety of problems. The deepest well drilled was 13,518 ft, and the total depth averaged 10,977 ft. Throughout this period drilling mud control and types of mud handled were: (I) phosphate, (2) red lime (late conversion), (3) red lime starch (early conversion), (4) red lime starch oil emulsion, (5) precision controlled low alkalinity-low lime content. and (6) gel muds for completion purposes. Improvement has been obtained in effecting some or all of the following: (I) more rapid penetration, (2) reduction in drilling hazards, (3) better evaluation of cores and logs, and (4) better completions. The geological sequence of zones penetrated range from recent sediments at the grass roots through the Frio section. Anticipation of high-pressure zones and incompetent formations entails precision control of drilling mud weights, and the unconsolidated nature of the various zones requires constant attention to the filtrate, viscosity, and gel strength values. In the Chalkley field, particularly, this combination of problems exists, where the formation pressures and overburden weight density values are in very close proximity. Design of casing and drilling mud programs must be modified to fit each well. INTRODUCTION Field and research work on drilling fluids has made constant progress, enabling operators to prospect progressively deeper horizons. Numerous papers have been written on the theoretical aspects of drilling fluid devel- opment, but in the field engineers have found it difficult to evaluate the role of specific mud constitutents when dealing in terms of thousand barrel mud systems. For that reason field data is somewhat lagging in technical report writing. However, applications of new techniques in the field have usually paralleled, and in numerous instances preceded, research work. The information obtained by Magnolia Petroleum Co. in the course of drilling 39 wells within a comparatively small area in Southwest Coastal Louisiana provides an excellent opportunity of reviewing a specific example of drilling mud evolution. A large variety of problems has been coped with, the most important result being that every well was successfully drilled to its projected total depth. The discussion begins with the advent of deep drilling in this area in March, 1945, and is concluded with a resume of recent drilling operations in the Chalkley field. The primary purpose of this paper is to describe the evolution in types of drilling fluids as it occurred and its application in the solution of various drilling problems. All of this information and experience resulted in the successful drilling of the three wells in the Chalkley field, where a combination of the most sound techniques was necessary in carrying drilling operations to the projected total depths. Other operators along with service company engineers have contributed considerably through the interchange of ideas and information to this paper, but the data and conclusions which are contained are based on first-hand observation of Magnolia Petroleum Company's drilling operations. The 39 wells drilled by Magnolia Petroleum Co. average in depth 10,977 ft per well, while the maximum depth penetrated was 13,518 ft. The cost of drilling fluids have varied from $8,700 to $165,000, with the over-all drilling costs ranging from $74,000 to $543,000 per well. In the mining operations of The Canyon Corp., Deadwood. S. D., the use of mucking machines has been of definite advantage. The type used is that which depends upon the traction of the motor-driven wheels to crowd the dipper into the muck pile, while the car in which the muck is received is coupled to the mucker and moves forward or back with it. This general arrangement is entirely satisfactory on a substantially level track. The ores which occur in this district are a replacement of dolomite and the beds are now tilted to an inclination of about 7-1/20. In our operations it is necessary to drive inclines down-hill on this slope, which makes a difficult hand-mucking job even if water were not present. With these facts in mind, an attempt was made to use the mucking machine for driving down the in- cline, but as expected, the traction was insufficient to handle the machine and the necessary car. The means used to correct this condition will perhaps impress most readers as too complicated and cumbersome to effect any economy, but the idea may be of service to some who have a similar condition. I HAVE chosen for my subject a mining district which in an article published four years ago I referred to in the following words: "One of the un- usual anomalies of mining development and history is that a district having added thirty or more millions of wealth to a principal mining state, situated within four to six miles of two transcontinental railways and two auto highways, and within 150 miles of the most widely advertised part of the United States, should have been so completely lost sight of that probably not one mining man in ten can tell offhand where it is situated." But this district never was a dead one: it was only slumbering. During the past four months, day by day, it has been emerging from that state of slumber.

As the first loads of Noamundi iron ore rumbled into the new 54-in. Gyratory Crusher on March 30, 1968, one of India's largest and most modern iron ore processing complexes began operations. The completion of the $13 million mining and processing complex brought to a successful conclusion the second chapter of a phased expansion program initiated in 1958 by India's gigantic Tata Iron and Steel Co. The completed complex will yield annually 2.5 million tons of washed, sized ore and sinter fines destined for Tata's furnaces at Jamshedpur. Hewitt-Robins Div. of Litton Industries was awarded the turnkey project on the basis of world- wide competitive bids. Eighty miles southwest of the city of Jamshedpur, Noamundi lies on an approximate geographic grid of 22º-5' latitude north and 85º-30' longitude east. The mine is approximately 600 ft above sea level.

SHARP CONTRAST exists in the reports so helpfully contributed by the individual members of the Milling Committee for this review. Those engaged in the milling of gold and silver ores report great activity, of which some details will be given later. Those engaged in milling ores of base metals report continued depression and little progress. Copper production in the United States is running at about fifteen per cent of capacity. Some Arizona copper mills are closed. Anaconda is milling about 45.000 tons of copper ore per month, and the Utah Copper Co. 35,000 monthly. However, in Canada the International and Falconhridge copper-nickel mills and the Noranda copper-gold mill have increased production. Also the Climax molybdenum mill in Colorado is milling 4000 tons per day. Water shortage from the drought has caused curtailment or complete shutdown of mills in some parts of the West.

Ruby crystals of exceptional optical quality have been grown from fluxes composed of Bi2O3 + PbF2 or Bi2O3 + BiF3. Careful control of growth conditions was required to minimize the number of growth defects consisting primarily of dislocations, occluded flux, and growth twins. Slow growth rates coupled with the addition of small amounts of La2O3 as a flux dopant were helpful in producing nearly perfect crystals. Chromium concentrations up to 1 pet were incorporated into these crystals without adversely affecting their perfection. Crystals up to 10 mm in diameter having as few as one to ten dislocations per crystal were typical of those produced under optimum growth conditions. Under these same conditions the occlusions were eliminated, and growth twins were either eliminated or reduced to one to three twin boundaries per crystal. INTEREST in the nature of lattice imperfections produced during the growth of ruby crystals (Al2O3-corundum structure) has been stimulated recently by the need for ruby lasers of good optical uniformity. As a result, ruby crystals grown by the flame-fusion (Verneuil) process have been studied in detail and have been found to contain high densities of dislocations (106 to 107 dislocations per sq cm) and mosaic structures that impair their optical quality.'-3 Attempts to improve the quality of Verneuil-grown crystals by controlling the growth variables have not been entirely successful. On the other hand, rubies grown by the flux process have received little attention even though their more nearly equilibrium growth conditions suggest that they would have fewer growth defects. Nelson and Remeika have shown recently that small flux-grown rubies can indeed be made into very low-loss lasers. However, they did not report information on crystalline imperfections in these crystals.4 Stephens and Alford have reported briefly on defects found in a flux-grown corundum crystal but they neither described these defects in detail nor related them to the method of growth.5 The present investigation was undertaken to establish the relationship between growth conditions and crystalline perfection of flux-grown rubies, sapphires, and other crystals of the corundum family. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The corundum crystals used in this study were grown by slowly cooling solutions of A12O3 in molten-salt solvents of PbO + PbF2, Bi2O3 + PbF2 or Bi2O3 + BiF3. The materials employed were Linde A (a Al2O3 powder) with reagent-grade chemicals as solvents. Some of the solutions also contained small additions (1 pet or less) of one or more of the transition metal elements chromium, manganese, iron, and titanium as crystal dopants. La2O3 was added to some of the solutions to alter the growth habit of the crystals. The La2O3 promoted the occurrence of growth facets parallel to (0112) and {1011} planes, where the indexing system is the morphological system described in detail by Kron-berg6 and used throughout this paper. The melts from which the crystals were grown were prepared by mechanically mixing the various constituents and placing them in platinum crucibles. The covered 50- and 100-ml platinum crucibles were heated in muffle furnaces at 1250°C for short periods of time (1 to 4 hr) and then program-cooled at either 2° or 4°C per hr to 1000°C. COMMERCIAL strip mining of coal was first begun in the state of Illinois in 1911.1 The annual tonnage of coal produced from coal strip mines in the state was very small until 1924, when the strip mines shipped 1.68 pet of the total state shipping mine tonnage. Since then, strip mines have gradually come into their own by producing a sizable percentage of the coal produced in the state. Table 1 shows the coal tonnage shipped from both underground and strip coal mines in the state of Illinois for selected years. The table illustrates the major role that strip mines play in the state's coal industry. Today, strip mining is generally conducted in areas where the coal seams lie so close to the surface of earth that a stripping method of mining the coal seam is cheaper than an underground method. Strip mining not only recovers 100 pct of the coal deposit, but may also be used as a method of mining large acreages of coal abandoned by the closing of underground mines.

IN the last year, much information had become available as to the extent that zinc participated in the war effort. The importance of foreign zinc in this program had been indicated by Bateman (M&M April 1945) as of the order of 400,000 tons annually in zinc or contained zinc. Pehrson (M&M April 1945) reviewed the domestic ore-reserve situation with respect to most minerals and metals and showed the extent to which commercial zinc ores had become depleted in this country. This picture was further darkened by O.P.A. figures appearing in E.&M.J. July 1945 in which figures for total production during the three previous years were broken down into percentages produced under ceiling and various quota price categories. True, factors other than depleted ore reserves contributed to this picture. Among the more important of these, were shortage and high cost of labor, both skilled and unskilled, and the general difficulty and cost of maintaining adequate equipment and supplies. The cost of production in the Tri-State district was most affected.

President Howe : It is not so clear to me that the facts which Dr. Waldo brings forward really argue that the nature of the combination between copper and aluminum differs from that of the combination between copper and zinc or copper and tin. As regards electric conductivity, I suppose that the fact, which he thinks points to a special intimate kind of union between aluminum and copper, is that the line in his Fig. 1 is neither straight nor uniformly curved, but that its curvature varies rapidly, not to say abruptly. But we find just such variation in like curves for the copper-zinc and copper-tin alloys. Thus, a slight addition of zinc or tin to copper causes a change in color wholly out of proportion to the quantity added; and, as we add zinc or tin to copper, the tenacity rises very greatly, only to fall off abruptly with further additions of either of these metals.
