During the last twenty years or so the chemical investigation of rocks has made great advances, and it is now generally recognized that a knowledge of the chemical composition is as essential as that of the texture or mineral composition—if not more so—for the proper classification of rocks and study of their origin and relationships. Rock-analyses have vastly increased in number and, what is of greater importance, in quality. New and improved methods permit of greater accuracy than was possible in the early days, and the list of chemical constituents frequently determined has risen from the seven or eight of the greater part of the nineteenth century, to twenty or more. Indeed, rock-analyses with determinations of so many constituents are now commonly made by the chemists of the United States and Australia, while in Germany, Great Britain, France, and Italy the rarer constituents are determined more frequently than formerly. As a consequence of this modern, accurate work, it has been discovered that some elements which were formerly supposed to be rare are of wide-spread occurrence and are often present in considerable amount. The fact is further being developed that the elements tend to show certain relations of occurrence or abundance in connection with each other. This is a fact which is applicable to the rarer elements, and which also finds a broad geological and petrological expression in the recognition of petrographic provinces. We are beginning to obtain some definite, though as yet rudimentary, knowledge of the distribution of the elements among igneous rocks. Some of the results along these lines obtained by study of the vast accumulation of analytical data now available are well known to petrologists, while others do not seem to be so gener-

THE EL TIGRE MINE is a highgrade silver and gold producer located in the northern part of Sonora, Mexico. It has been worked continuously since 1903, producing 50,000.000 oz. of silver and returning handsome dividends. During 1930 and 1931 falling silver prices compelled the Tigre company to make representations before the Department of Labor in Mexico City showing the necessity for drastic reductions in wages and personnel. The delays in obtaining permission from the Federal Labor Board to make these readjustments caused the company to suffer considerable financial loss during those years. After the reduction in operations was finally effected, the Sonora state government headed by Señor Francisco Elias (former Governor, now Secretary of Agriculture) and Señor Rodolfo Elias Calles (present Governor and eldest son of Señor Plutarco Elias Calles, recently Secretary of War and former President of Mexico) have cooperated with the company to make continued operation possible by revising downward certain state taxes that would have been a factor in forcing the closing of this mine. Also, permission to change our workmen over to another system of mining was essential to continued operation.

MINING revival during the last few years has brought about a considerable increase in the number of gold and silver determinations made, noticeable in all branches of the industry but especially so in the business of a custom smelter. At East Helena, solely a custom smelter the assay department found that the four assay furnaces available were inadequate to handle the increased amount of work. These furnaces were of a standard design, having duplex muffles, one superimposed on the other; each muffle was 12 1/2 in. wide, 18 1/4 in. long and 6 in. high, and could handle 72 cupels or 20 fusions. Since the heat varied considerably between the upper and lower muffles, cupellations were not ruin in both at the same time. To speed up assaying, E. A. Meale, chief chemist, had the happy idea of enlarging a muffle furnace, originally designed by the Montana Power Co., so that one muffle would acconmmodate at least as many determinations as the duplex muffles. An order was given to the Denver Fire Clay Co. for a Carbofrax muffle of the size required and the local engineering department enlarged the furnace to accommodate the muffle. Details of the

Proper use of automatic controls in the process industries is a combination of art and science. Although many phases of automatic control theory can be expressed by precise mathematical relationships, the final control arrangement usually requires considerable effort by trial and error before the optimum control circuit is found. The failure of flotation operators to recognize that control circuits require study and plant experimentation before satisfactory operation occurs has led to a popular misconception that flotation plants simply do not lend themselves to automation. This widespread belief has been overcome to some degree in recent years by the numerous installations of automatic controls that have paid their way by increasing profits in terms of increased recoveries, lowered costs, or higher grade concentrates. WHY CONTROL ? Any form of automation must be justified in terms of ultimate return on in- vestment by improving quality, by increasing plant throughput, or by reducing the total operating costs. Generally speaking, automatic controls rarely re- place a mill operator. They assist the operator in holding important variables within predetermined limits. Large tonnage operations usually can justify a great deal of automation because an increase in one or two units of recovery results in enormous savings compared to the capital and operating costs of controls. DETERMINATION OF CONTROL The first questions in considering plant automation are: 1) What variables must be controlled? 2) What are the optimum levels of the variables? The optimum operating conditions for any process are those which maximize profits. Many of the variables active in flotation processing can be determined by experimentation in the laboratory or pilot plant 10. Although laboratory experiments can pinpoint variables, the true optimum conditions existing at plant level usually must be determined by plant scale experiments. AT the Tooele custom lead-zinc ore concentrator,' two sections, each having a daily capacity of 500 to 600 tons, are operated on slightly different types of ores with but little difference in flow sheet and reagents. The ores comprising the two general classes are the coarsely crystalline type, with low pyrite and sphalerite low in iron content, from the Park City district, and the more finely disseminated higher pyrite ores from Bingham, which are more difficult to treat by flotation. Laboratory testing determines with which general class a new ore will work better. The ores are crushed to minus 1 1/4-in. size at either the Utah Ore Sampling Company's plant at Murray, Utah, the Tooele smelter sampling plant, or the crushing plant at the concentrator. The ores for each section are mixed to maintain as nearly as possible uniform lead and zinc contents.

MAGNETITE mining and milling in the Eastern States was at capacity during 1940, owing to the heavy industrial, defense, and war demand, coupled temporarily with the almost total stoppage of imports of foreign ores other than those under American ownership. In New York State the active mines were those operated by the Republic Steel Corp. at Mineville and Lyon Mountain. Republic's new concentrating mill at Port Henry, handling the Mineville ores, went into production about the first of April. MOST mining engineers and geologists realize the value of photographs in their professional work. Members of each group use photographs to illustrate their reports, and articles and photographs, when available, will often save many words of written text in explaining some point or in proving some pet theory. No one hesitates to take aboveground pictures but many rarely take their cameras underground. However, underground photography, too, is really simple. I do not believe that anything new is offered here and the procedures given are merely a compilation of various methods I have tried and used, with some success, over the past six or seven years. The article will deal with photographs to be taken in metal mines, but only in those where no gas hazard exists, with resultant danger of explosions and fire. Some mining company geologists consider the camera a necessary part of their equipment and carry one on their daily trips to the various parts of the mine under their observation. The Ni-Ni,Ti lamellar eutectic alloy responds to unidirectional solidification by alig-nment of the platelets of the two phases roilghly perpendicular to the moving solid-liquid interface. X-ray diffraction and zetallographic experimenls show that the following cryslallographic relationships exist in the directionally solidified ingots: lamellar interface w [0001] Ni3Ti 11 (111 }Ni local growth direction (1120) Ni3Ti n (110) Ni These relationships are rationalized on the basis of the crystallography of the constituent phases. In recent years researchers in several laboratories have shown that an aligned or "controlled" micro-structure can be produced in many binary eutectic alloys by forcing the alloy to solidify unidirectionally in an elongated crucible.'-3 It also has been found that a unique crystallographic relationship often develops between the two phases in such a structure.4, 5 Since a parallel arrangement of phase particles in an alloy should, and, in many cases, does, produce unique and highly anisotropic properties, the alloys so produced are of potential interest in a variety of applications. Studies of these alloys are also of interest at the academic level because they help to improve our basic understanding of the way in which metals solidify. This paper reports the metallographic and crystallographic structure of another of these alloys—that between nickel and Ni3Ti. In a separate paper, hot tensile and stress rupture properties as well as deformation and fracture behavior of the same alloy are discussed.19 EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS AND RESULTS General Characteristics of the Eutectic Reaction. Several small exploratory Ni-Ti melts were made to resolve a conflict in Hansen6 over the eutectic composition. The alloy containing 16.4 at. pct Ti, Fig. 1, appeared metallographically to be closest to the eutectic composition, although small dendritic patches of proeutectic nickel are present. The eutectic morphology is lamellar and appears quite sharp and angular, indicating a strong influence of crystallographic factors upon the microstructure. Some of the eutectic nickel platelets are continuous with the primary phase, whereas in hyper eutectic melts a "halo" of nickel generally surrounded the proeutectic inter-metallic platelets, indicating that nickel is the nucleating phase in this eutectic reaction. Extensive precipitation of Ni3Ti has occurred in the primary nickel phase in a Widmanstatten pattern which makes the dendrites difficult to differentiate from the eutectic mixture. This phenomenon may account for discrepancies among the eutectic compositions reported in the literature. The sloping solvus line bounding the nickel primary solid solution explains the presence of the intermetallic precipitate. Poole and Hume-Rothery7 report that the solubility of titanium in nickel drops from 13.8 at. pct at the eutectic temperature (1304°C) to approximately 9 at. pct at 700°C (Ni3Ti, on the other hand, melts con-gruently and exhibits essentially no solubility for nickel or titanium). Lever rule calculations based upon Poole and Hume-Rothery's phase diagram indicate an increase from 21 vol pct Ni3Ti in the eutectic mixture at the eutectic temperature to 61 pct at room temperature. Selective point count measurements of the volume fraction of eutectic Ni3Ti platelets in the eutectic microstructure yielded a value of 46 i 2 vol pct, which required extensive precipitation of Ni3Ti from the nickel solid solution onto the eutectic intermetallic platelets during cooling from the solidification temperature. Influence of Directional Solidification. Nickel bar and titanium sponge of 99.9 pct purity were induction-melted in zirconia crucibles under argon in the proportion of 13.8 wt pct (16.4 at. pct) Ti to produce 14-lb master heats which were cast into investment molds yielding 5/8-in.-diam pins approximately 10 in. long. These pins were remelted under argon in horizontal zirconia boats and unidirectionally solidified to produce 1/2-in.-sq ingots approximately 44 in. long. THE published work of Lacombe and Beaujard' has demonstrated the interesting application of etch figures to the determination of crystal orientations in aluminum by a purely micrographic method. The geometry of these figures leaves no ambiguity and the method has the added advantage of being applicable to very small crystal units. Lead concentrates from Kuroko (black ore) mines, which contain 4-7% Cu, 55% Pb, 3-777, Zn, and 0.5-0.9% As, are pretreated by a hydrometallurgical process before electric furnace smelting with other lead resources from Kuroko. The hydrometallurgical pretreatment involves sulfuric acid leaching in the first stage and ferric leaching in the second stage. This paper describes the short history of lead recovery from Kuroko and the performance of laboratory tests and pilot plant and commercial operations.

The amplitudes and frequencies of vibratiolls of a four-story stucco building were measured by specially developed electrocapacitive seismometers. Records were made on three floor levels with as many as 10 seismometers recording simultancously. Sources of vibration were: (1) an electric motor with unbalanced pulley, maximum speed 1800 r.p.m., maximum centrifugal force 90 lb., (2) truck traffic (both solid and pneumatic tires) moving over inequalities in the street in front of the house, (3) falling weights dropped on the street pavement from different heights, (4) miscellaneous sources, including a man jumping on the floor of the house and slamming doors. Tests were made to determine the natural frequencies of floor and wall panels by varying the speed of the unbalanced motor and by exciting the panels with a single impulse. The vibrations recorded were compared to records of vibrations from quarry blasts and it was observed that the vibrations from truck traffic were comparable to those recorded from quarry blasts and in no instance was there any damage to the building. As the tests were all of a negative character as far as damage was concerned, no index of destruction is formulated. Instead, the records are presented simply as vibration measurements obtained in an ordinary house under typical conditions.

In the previous paper, the writer indicated that the arc welding of cast iron is practicable only when barium carbonate is used to retard the fusion of electrodes. Later, he tested the effects of 48 other elements, to discover the cause of their retarding action. Wrought-iron bars 33 cm. long and 0.53 cm. dia. were used as electrodes. Trace Phosphorus.............................................. 0.047 Sulfur................................................... 0.008 Each of the bars was wound with a twine of asbestos (1 mm. dia., weighing 0.5 g.) and then was coated with a mixture of equal quantities of graphite and carborundum and one of the compounds listed in the second column of Table 2. The method used in coating was as follows: The mixtures were reduced to paste by adding to them a solution of water glass (1:3); they were next put in a glass tube of 8 mm. inner diameter, with funnel-shaped mouth (the same tube shown in the previous paper); then the bars were passed through the tube so that the mixtures were coated on them. The glass tube was used only as a means of making the diameters of all coated bars exactly 8 millimeters. The cast iron was deposited on the steel plates by connecting the electrodes first to the positive and then to the negative pole of the generator. The figures representing the time, voltage, amperes and energy required to melt each electrode are given in Table 2. They are arranged in the order of the atomic weights of the elements contained in the coatings. The process to be described, whatever other merits (or demerits) it may have possessed, certainly proved a financial success under the conditions of the locality where it was introduced and where a refining process had been sought previously in vain. I have ventured to bring it to the notice of the Institute in the hope that it may prove of some interest as a solution of a practical problem, such as is often presented to the metallurgist in the remote mining regions of the West. The method was used first at the Lyon Mill at Dayton, Nevada, and has been adopted at other tailings-mills on the Cornstock. There are two methods of determining the fusibility or refractoriness of fire-clays, the theoretical and the experimental. In the former, conclusions are drawn from the chemical composition; in the latter, from the changes which the clay undergoes when subjeoted to intense heat. It is well to use both methods, beginning with the actual heat-test and explaining the results obtained from this by the help of the chemical analysis. In discussing the subject, however, it is better to reverse this order. I. The Theoretical Method.* Leaving out the hygroscopic and combined waters and any organic matter, as not directly affecting the fire-resisting property, the refractory constituents of fire-clay are alumina and silica, and the fluxing constituents magnesia, lime, soda, potash and ferric oxide. According to Bischof,† alumina is the least fusible component, and silica follows close upon it. If, however, a mixture of the two be heated, it will be found that its melting-point is much lower than that of alumina, as a silicate will then have been formed. This paper presents comparisons of data obtained from a laboratory reservoir study and from a calculated behavior prediction with the actual production history of a condensate reservoir. A small non-commercial discovery was depleted under closely controlled conditions and the well fluids were sampled at frequent intervals. Data on the reservoir and production variables were accumulated on a fixed schedule. A laboratory reservoir study war made using the initial well fluid samples as charging stock. The production procedures and operating conditions were held constant throughout the study wherever possible and in general paralleled the field work. The well fluid compositions and the cumulative recoveries ar a function of the reservoir pressure were also calculated using conventional flash vaporization procedures and equilibrium constants. Comparisons based on the composition of the well fluid show good agreement, the laboratory study agreeing within experimental accuracy with the field work and the calculated data comparing equally well. The gas-oil ratios are also in good agreement, but with somewhat greater deviations at the higher pressures. In the overall picture, it is believed that a model st,~tiy can predict within experimental accuracy the production history of a condensate reservoir. Better equilibrium constants for the heavier hydrocarbons are needed in order to attain improved composition accuracy by calculation. INTRODUCTION In Aug., 1955, a gas condensate well was completed in San Juan County, Utah, that was initially thought capable of good commercial production. These conclusions were derived principally from core data and electric logs, which indicated good permeability, porosity and gas content. However, after the usual series of potential tests it was found that the reservoir pressure had declined some 22 per cent, and it was obvious that the zone tapped was but a small pocket or trap. It became apparent that, with a controlled depletion of a small reservoir, a unique opportunity was available to compare laboratory and calculated studies with an actual field depletion and to further the present knowledge of condensate reservoirs. FIELD WORK The Coalbed Canyon Well No. 1 was conventionally completed in the Paradox limestone formation to a total depth of 5,912 ft. The producing zone from 5,762 to 5,806 ft was perforated with four jet shots per ft. The wellhead and field equipment were also conventional, the major items consisting of a two-pass indirect fired line heater, a high- and a low-pressure separator with the necessary controls and accessories, gas meters, back-pressure regulators, flare stacks and condensate stock tanks. The initial testing of this well con-sisted of a series of flow potential and pressure build-up tests during which some 30 MMcf of gas was produced. The reservoir pressure declined from an estimated 2,300 to 1,782 psig during this period, from which it was concluded that the reservoir was very small. In order to approach steady-state conditions in the reservoir and so provide optimum conditions for making comparisons, the field depletion was programmed to approach, if possible, constant production conditions. Bi-hourly readings were taken of the tubing pressure, the pressure and temperature of the separators, oil and gas rates, and other pertinent operating data. The gas rate, as indicated by the orifice meter, was held constant by the adjustment of the choke in the line heater. The temperature of the first stage separator was held constant by adjustment of the line heater jacket temperature. Practical considerations of production made the maintenance oi a constant gas rate impossible. The test started with a gas rate of 4 MMcf/D and a separator pressure of 250 psig. This rate was maintained until the choke was fully opened. The gas rate then declined with the falling tubing pressure and production was continued until the rate was about 2
