Experience with the ASC multipoint gas lift system was obtained in Colonia zone of the West Montalvo field near Oxnard, Calif. The wells in this pool produce from depths varying from 10,500 to 12,000 ft. Oil gravity is generally 14 to 15' API with a few extremes of 12 and 20" API. Some salt water is produced which causes some very viscous emulsions. Viscosities at 150F (which is the approximate wellhead temperature) vary from 5,000 to 100,000 SSU. Most of the production is by gas lift, although a few wells are produced by rod and hydraulic pump. About half of the gas-lift wells are on continuous flow and the remainder are on intermittent lift using large, ported, pilot-operated valves for single-point transfer of gas from casing to tubing. Gas-liquid ratios vary from about 6 to 10 Mcf/bbl of gross fluid lifted. Wells are produced to a 450-psi trap system. The following remarks will be confined to intermittent lift only, since this is the type of lift which has been achieved with the ASC valve system. The maximum gross fluid which has been produced by single-point intermittent lift is about 350 B/D in 3-in. tubing and 200 B/D in 21/2-in. tubing with gas-liquid ratios of approximately 7 to 9 Mcf/bbl. Some design changes could reduce this ratio. The ASC multipoint system has provided production as high as 480 BOPD in 21/2-in. tubing with gas-liquid ratios just under 4 Mcf/bbl. To be able to apply the multipoint system, it is recommended that a detailed explanation be obtained concerning transition-point pressure and stabilizer setting—what its significance is to the string design, how it may work for or against the operation of the well, how it is related to tubing sensitivity and how it affects the unloading operation. The unloading operation may only be of academic interest in a technical paper, but to the production foreman, unloading and setting the valves in operation is a very real problem and should be understood in detail. One item touched lightly in the paper was the unloading valve. This valve controls the maximum pressure at which the well can be operated. When lifting heavy viscous fluids, it is most important to set this valve for the maximum possible realistic operating pressure at the surface. If the well lifts easily, it is simple to set the ASC valves at a lower operating pressure and the unloading valve will remain closed; but if the well happens to be heavier to lift than anticipated, it may be desirable to operate on the unloading valve itself and use all the energy obtainable at the bottom of the hole. In the Colonia pool very heavy wet-gas gradients are experienced due to the viscosity of the liquid and the dense mist which is left behind a slug of fluid. There are many combination strings of 3- and 21/2-in. tubing. This aggravates the wet-gas gradient problem and provides wet-gas gradients of about 50 to 70 psi/1,000. An advantage which multipoint lift has provided is increased slug efficiency through better maintenance of pressure under the slug and decreased fall back as the slug passes up the tubing. By using multipoint injection, wet-gas gradients have been reduced to about 30 psi/1,000. This has reduced bottom-hole operating pressure and given a production increase. The ASC valve is not a simple device. It's operation is difficult to understand, and it must be understood to be used efficiently in gas-lift design. Operating problems are difficult to diagnose—whether they be caused by the fluid lifted, valve malfunction, lift gas rate, or operating pressure. Calculations and reasoning are required to find out what is causing the problem. Inherent in the ASC valve is the inability to create large pressure differentials across a slug. Large differentials may be required to overcome the inertia of very viscous fluid as it is being accelerated in the bottom of the hole. This is tied back to the design of the unloading valve and is one reason for the importance of setting the unloading valve for the highest possible operating pressure. ~u; to the narrow spread the ASC valves provide, it is impossible to cycle slower than about 24 cycles/day on choke control. If small production of 150 BOPD and less is expected, a surface time-cycle controller will be required if the most economical operation is to be achieved. To achieve a satisfactory operation, the operator must keep a record of any changes made in the operating pressure of the ASC valves. Anything which may cause changes in casing pressure in excess of the stabilizer setting will change the valve operating pressure, and if this is not noted from daily inspection of the well casing-tubing pressure recorder charts, the operator will lose control of the well. Significant results can be achieved using ASC valves; however, considerable knowledge is required to design with them, and attention to detail is required for satisfactory field operation.

In the South Island of New Zealand an unusually favorable opportunity is offered for the analysis of the older crystalline rocks, underlying the sedimentary rocks which form the "country" of the gold-deposits. The Manipori formation of this island, comprising the greater part of the mountainous district west of lakes Manipori and Te Anau, in Otago, consists of an enormous thickness (estimated by Professor Hutton1 at 160,000 ft.) of crystalline schists, gneiss, syenite, and syenitic gneiss, with associated masses of granite; the whole forming the most picturesque fart of New Zealand. The famous West Coast sounds occur in this formation. No paying auriferous lodes have been discovered in it; and for this reason an examination of the rocks is specially interesting here. Stelzner, Posepny, and others, who have criticised the conclusions of Sandberger, have laid great stress on the fact that all the silicates analyzed by him were taken from the vicinity of orebodies containing those heavy metals which he notes as occurring in the silicates of the country-rock; their contention being that these metals, supposed to occur as silicates in gneiss and other crystalline rocks, were really contained as sulphides, and were therefore impregnations from the neighboring orebodies. The same objection, whatever be its weight, might be urged with equal justice against Mr. Becker's derivation of the mercury and gold of the lodes of the Pacific Coast from' the granite underlying their country-rock. BEAN1 has discussed the magnetic behavior of mixtures of small ferromagnetic particles on the order of 20 to l000A in diam. As he points out, there are three size categories with characteristic properties: 1) Particles large enough to contain many ferromagnetic domains magnetize initially by the motion of domain walls. The initial susceptibility of such particles, if domain-wall motion is assumed to be perfectly easy, depends only on their shape. It is equal to the reciprocal of the demagnetizing factor (and is thus 3/4 tt for a sphere) and is independent of temperature. 2) Smaller particles find it energetically undesirable to contain domain boundaries. They are always spontaneously saturated, and reverse their magnetization only by rotation of their entire magnetic moment. As assemblage of such particles has a remanence which is a large fraction of the saturation of the assemblage; its coercive force is on the order of 2K/1,, where K indicates magnetic aniso-tropy from any source, and I, is the saturation magnetization of the substance of which the particles are made. 3) Particles which are still smaller continue to be single-domain, but the direction of their magnetization fluctuates thermally, as first pointed out by Neel.' They have no remanence and no coercive force and possess the temperature-dependent magnetization curve of a paramagnetic substance with a very large moment. Bean calls this superpara-magnetism. All of these kinds of behavior are observable in alloys consisting of a precipitate of ferromagnetic phase in a nonferromagnetic matrix. The requirements of coals for the manufacture of coal gas, water gas and producer gas will be considered sparately and a short description of each gasmaking process will be given. In this report the term "gas coal" is confined to coals suitable for the manufacture of city gas in horizontal, inclined or vertical retorts. The report does not refer to coke-oven practice.' Briefly, the process of manufacture consists of distilling the coal at high temperature in an externally heated retort out of contact with the air. The products of distillation, consisting of gas, tar, ammonia, etc. are collected and purified. The residue consists of coke, which is removed from the retort at the end of the carbonizing period. To supply the heat required in the process, a portion of the coke produced is converted into producer gas, which is burned under the retort settings. Qualities of Gas Coals The chief qualities that coal must possess in order to be classified as a gas coal are as follows: 1. Gas Yield.—The coal must be capable of yielding gas in sufficient volume and of a satisfactory quality. The yield depends considerably upon the temperature of distillation; a higher temperature will give a larger yield of gas, but the qualit,y of gas (now measured by the British thermal units per cubic foot) will be lower, while a lower carbonizing temperature will give less gas of higher heating value. The true measure of the yield is the number of British thermal units produced in the gas from a given quantity of coal. This number is obtained by multiplying the cubic feet of gas from 1 lb. of coal by the British thermal units per cubic foot of gas; it is called B.t.u. feet per pound. It is found that the

A high degree of cuhe-on-edge grain orientation and good magnetic properties were obtained in Si-Fe strip processed from laboratory heats containing vanadium nitride inclusions. The higher the nitrogen content the greater was the restraint on normal grain growth and the greater was the ability to undergo secondary recrystal-lization. The degree of restraint in a heat containing magnanese sulfide inclusions was slightly greater than that in the lowest nitrogen vanadium nitride heat. The high rate of diffusion of nitrogen in the temperature range in which the texture is developed makes it necessary to retard the loss of the inclusions until the texture has been developed. MAY and Turnbulll have shown that to develop the cube-on-edge secondary recrystallization texture in Si-Fe it is necessary that inclusions, such as manganese sulfide, be present to prevent normal grain growth. They showed that the driving force for the growth of the secondary grains is inversely proportional to the diameter of the matrix grains, and that the function of the inclusions is to maintain a small matrix grain size. Fast3has developed cube-on- edge texture in Si-Fe by nitriding the hot rolled band. The silicon nitride thereby formed promotes secondary recrystallization during the anneal of the final gage strip. To obtain the best magnetic properties, the inclusions must be removed from the strip after the grain orientation has been developed. Nitride inclusions have an inherent advantage over sulfide inclusions in that the greater diffusivity of nitrogen as comared to sulfur permits the use of shorter times and or lower temperatures for the purification heat treatment. The purpose of the work to be described was to examine the usefulness of vanadium nitride inclusions in developing the cube-on-edge texture and to determine the magnetic properties of oriented strip made from heats containing these inclusions. The first step in a quantitative analysis ot the mechanism of oil displacement by water in a fractured reservoir is usually conceded to be the solution of the differential equation describing the saturation distribution of two immiscible fluids flowing in a porous medium, where the capillary pressure is taken into account. In such a system the production mechanism may consist of displacement of oil both by the flow of water due to natural or artificially imposed pressure gradients and by imbibition, which implies a flow of water not due to external pressure gradients. Owing to the presence of the two oil displacement mechanisms, the mathematical model given by the differential equation intended to describe the system may not properly represent the behavior of the physical system. In fact, in the reservoir the rate of water advance may be very slow, and in the case of a fractured reservoir with a great number of large fractures, the pressure difference determining the flow of water through the matrix may be much less than 1 lb/'psi over lengths of a few feet. In such a case, imbi-bition (the exchange between oil in the matrix and water in the fractures resulting from capillary forces) may become, with time. a significant element of the production mechanism. It occurred Lo the authors, however, that without going into a physical analysis of the process of production, it might be possible by means of simple abstract reasoning to throw some light on the variation of recovery with time under conditions occurring in a highly fractured oil reservoir with rising water table. The object of this paper is to present both the reasoning and its application to a reservoir of the highly fractured type. Specifically, the analysis given here was undertaken to try to explain the increase of recovery (as defined later) with time as observed in this reservoir, without having to assume unlikely variations in the reservoir parameters with depth. This attempt has been successful as will become clear upon comparison of the computed recoveries with the actual field data. ABSTRACT MODEL Let us consider a small volume. of porous matrix saturated with oil at time, t = 0. Let the process of oil displacement by water start at time, t = t,,. At some time, t, the process will have terminated. Then a volume of oil equal to or smaller than the original oil contained in the matrix will have been produced. The first basic assumption that describes the model and guides the forthcoming reasoning is that the oil production from the small volume. dv, is a continuous monotonic function of time and that it converges to a finite limit. Such an assumption is not inconsistent with the results of laboratory waterflood tests as well as with results of imbibition tests where this is, in fact, observed. The second basic assumption is that none of the properties which determine the rate of convergence change sufficiently during the process to affect this rate or the limit. Discussion of the paper of M. B. YUNG, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting; October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2451 to 2458. T. T. READ, New York, N. Y.-I might .point out that this paper of Mr. Yung's is on a field that is comparatively little known. It is not as well known as the Kochiu tin field, of Yunnan, which is probably the third . in tin output of the world. This field under discussion is considerably further west and the tin which is produced here is, according to Mr. Yung, of somewhat higher grade than the Yunnan tin, and is used by the refiners at Hong Kong to improve the grade of the Yunnan tin. Most of you know that the tin from the Yunnan is shipped to Hong Kong, where it is refined and shipped to Europe. Mr. Yung points out that the Fu Chuan deposits are entirely alluvial and not found in any veins. They .differ in that from the Kochiu deposits, which Leclere says are "nullement alluvionels; leur origéne filonienne est de plus evidentes." Granite is the country rock here; doubtless the tin occurred in veins in the granite, and the deposits have resulted from the disintegration of the granite. This is a country of strong erosive agencies. The country is semi-tropical, and the rainfall is heavy, so that one would naturally expect deep surface erosion of this kind.

The equilibrium of gaseolis H2O-H2 mixtures with liquid iron-phosphorus alloys in the range 0 to 3 pct P is used to establish the increuse of the activity coefficient of oxygen, in the presence of phosphorus. Two different sampling techniques are used. THE importance of oxygen as a refining agent in steelmaking operations makes it desirable to improve our understanding of its behavior. Phosphorus which is always present in the ores has adverse effects on steel properties and its removal is necessary. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the interaction of oxygen and phosphorus in molten iron. Bookey, Richardson, and welch1 have studied the phosphorus-oxygen equilibria in liquid iron in the presence of lime. They used a mixture of hydrogen and water vapor to control the oxygen potential and worked with crucibles made of tetracalcium phosphate and lime. At low phosphorus concentration, i.e., at high oxygen, they observed a marked deviation in their results. They tentatively ascribed this to a large negative effect of oxygen on the activity of phosphorus. This was then included by chipman2 in his review of interactions in liquid iron. Pearson and Turkdogan 3 have later reported an interaction parameter They equilibrated a mixture of hydrogen and water vapor with an iron-phosphorus alloy contained in an alumina crucible and sampled the melt by suction in a silica tube. INTRODUCTION Rock slope stability typically is governed by the geological discontinuities. This stability can be improved by drainage, unloading, adjustment in slope orientation, adjustment in slope angle, and also by reinforcement such as bolts or tendons. This paper addresses the modeling of bolt reinforcement in rock slopes. Most geological discontinuities such as joints have rough surfaces; they dilate during shear displacement. Their shear strength is characterized by two envelopes (Fig. 1); the peak envelope is distinct from the residual envelope when the joints can dilate. If the dilation is restrained transversely, such as with bolts, the normal stress will increase and the joint strength also will increase. It has been demonstrated that this increase may be considerable (Obert et al., 1976). The new normal stress at peak strength is a com- posite function of the properties of the rock mass and of the steel (Heuze, 1979). Hence, the dilation and its resultant effects on joint shear strength must be included in the analysis and design of the reinforcement. We present a model which can be used to perform such an analysis. Early studies of rock reinforcement in mining and civil applications (Lang, 1957 - Panek, 1962 - Osen and Parsons, 1966 - Lang, 19721, did not consider the specific effects of bolts on joint shear strength. In 1973, Heuze and Goodman reported direct shear tests on rough sandstone joints with bolts perpendicular to the joint plane (Fig. 2). Rock bolts are commonly used to support and stabilize the rock around excavated openings. The assumption is made that the less competent rock near the surface can be supported by bolting it to more competent rock away from the surface. Naturally, a rock bolt can be no more effective than its anchoring mechanism which induces a stress field into the surrounding rock. Details of various types of bolts have been described e1sewhere.l The purpose of the present investigation is to study the stress distribution around an expansion-type rock bolt anchor, using the theory of elasticity. The elastic stress distribution provides some insight into the behavior of rock bolt anchors which may eventually lead to improved designs. Very little information is available on the induced stress field which is rather complex; consequently, photoelastic techniques have been used to obtain a qualitative picture of the stress ditribution.2 The present work provides quantitative information on the stress field induced by an idealized distribution of surface tractions, provided that the assumptions of the linear theory of elasticity are approximately satisfied. FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM Consider an elastic region which extends to infinity and contains a circular cylindrical hole as shown in Fig. 1. So far as I am aware the references to the " kerosene blow-pipe" in the Transactions comprise only a skeptical opinion from Mr. Witherow (ix., 70), and accounts of the use of the blow-pipe by Mr. Witherbee (xiii., 675) and Mr. Gayley (xiv., 779), together with brief remarks by Mr. Weeks and Mr. Kennedy on Mr. Witherbee's paper. The subject can scarcely be considered novel, in view of these references, yet it is not so far exhausted that an additional account of the successful application of the blow-pipe would be out of place, especially if accompanied with some new details and a drawing of the apparatus itself, showing its simplicity and safety. Some time ago, owing to a variety of causes, my furnace was working very badly, the troubles culminating suddenly one morning in a chilled hearth, solid from the bottom to the tuyeres, with the exception of a narrow passage-way from above to the cindernotch, which remained open. Through this we continued to flush and cast, with the prospect of a long and troublesome siege, in working down to the iron-notch. At the end of two days matters had not greatly improved, and we seemed no nearer the desired result than on the morning of the chill, when, at the suggestion of Mr. Farrell, of Glamorgan, I decided to use the coal-oil blow-pipe; the intention being to cut a hole from the iron-notch up to the tuyeres, and then let the furnace melt out the chilled mass. IN most branches of the mining industry it is a well-recognized fact that care must be taken to protect the mineral deposit from undue physical injury. It is comparatively easy to grasp this idea when the mineral is a solid and the lives of workmen depend directly upon the care with which it is removed from its natural position, but when the product is a liquid. drawn up from pools several thousand feet beneath the surface of the ground through openings only a few inches in diameter, it requires some imagination to picture underground conditions and the changes which must often occur. The development of the petroleum deposits of California has been attended by numerous accidents, the results of which are readily noticed at the top of the wells and in the profit and loss accounts of the operators. Determination of the cause of these accidents has been the subject of considerable study, which naturally has fallen upon men familiar with technical methods. The greatest damage to the oil deposits of California has resulted from water finding its way into the oil-bearing sands, and it is the purpose of this paper to set forth briefly this phase of the oil industry. Much of the material here presented has previously appeared inn publications issued by the California State Mining Bureau, which, under the direction of State. Mineralogist Fletcher McN. Hamilton, has investigated the subject and taken steps toward improvement of conditions. The writer, having been in charge of this branch of the Bureau work, has gained considerable knowledge of existing conditions.

Probably no one has had occasion to examine an undeveloped coal property without hearing some hopeful or interested party insist that the bed will improve when opened some distance under cover. When the bed is already in good condition, the opinion is usually advanced that the same character may be expected, at least to the bounds of the hopeful individual's holdings. My attention has been called in this way to the extent to which a bed is affected by its outcrop at the surface ; and having had opportunity to examine a number of openings immediately at the surface, and also a short distance under cover, I submit some observations bearing on this question. Whatever may have been the original variations, we may assume that coal-basins presented in comparatively modern times approximately parallel beds interstratified with fire-clay, slate, sandstone, etc., as represented by Fig. 1. Under the effect of erosion, Fig. 2 would be formed. It is obvious that along the line A, B, C, in Fig. 1, the beds exist under conditions differing from those at A', B', C', or again at A", B", C", in Fig. 2, in their exposures to atmospheric agencies, pressure and erosion. The effect of the first is to decompose and soften many of the strata; of the second, when presented unequally, to cause the movement of such material as was at all plastic towards the point of least pressure ; and of the third, to remove the strata in whole or in part. Y.-The results stated by Rey and Brevers are so startling that they are of great interest, as the concentration of a low percentage of cinnabar by differential flotation yields a high-grade concentrate in the presence of either arsenical or iron pyrite. The authors say: "Cyanide can thus be used to depress arsenopyrite and make a good cinnabar-arsenopyrite separation. A cinnabar-pyrite separation could probably be effected in the same way." Corrosive sublimate at the present price of mercury would be a very expensive reagent but the expense would be justifiable if a high rate of concentration could be obtained with a high extraction. On my request, special tests were made in the Punitaqui mill in Chile along the line suggested by the authors, without any improvement of either grade or extraction. As the recovery of the cinnabar in a complex sulphide of chalcopyrite and pyrite gave unsatisfactory results, I had tests made at the testing laboratory of the American Cyanamid Co. at Stamford, Conn. As these tests turned out to be highly satisfactory, not only at Stamford but later at the mine, they are presented here. [ ] The pulp had a density of 22 and a pH of 7.8. Total time of conditioning was one minute. The reagent added was Texas fuel oil, 0.116lb. of 33.7 Bé. gravity containing 0.9 per cent sulphur. Frother, 0.062 lb. of No. 5 pine oil. Rate of concentration of mercury was 25.7: 11. [ ]

The entire War Minerals Relief Commission heard the case of the Chas. T. Pyrites & Chemical Company of Georgia on April 15 and 16. The Commission insisted on great detail with regard to the entire enterprise, although the main questions seemed to be of the amount involved. It is considered by the Commission that this claim comes unquestionably under the Act, it is one of the best examples that has been brought to the attention of the Government thus far. Testimony showed that operations were done on the property late in 1916 without request from the Government. Preparations were made to work the pyrites deposit on a comparatively small scale but , following a visit from a representative of the Secretary of Interior and a personal interview of the principal owner of the property and Secretary Lane, operations on a much larger scale were begun. The amounts expended prior to this interview were carefully separated from the expenditures thereafter. Testimony showed that it was the intention of the owners to transport their product by motor truck to the railroad-13 mi. away. This limited shipments to about 50 tons daily. Under the enlarged plan taken against the better business judgment of the owners, a railroad spur at a cost f nearly $200,000 was built to the mine. The operation included a concentrating mill with a capacity f 600 tons daily and an expensive dam to make possible the use of waterpower. With these improvements, the company was just beginning, operation under its enlarged program when the armistice was signed. This resulted in a greatly decreased demand and consequently lower prices, with all prospects indicating that the property could not operate profitably when Spanish pyrites begin to move.
