Diffusion coefficients and marker movements have been determined in brass using welded couples. Three different concentration ranges were employed at 750°C, while a fourth concentration range was measured at 500°, 600°, 700°, and 800°C. Marker displacements toward and porosity development in the high zinc side of the couple were observed in all cases. The results were interpreted as favoring a vacancy diffusion mechanism. IN the large amount of diffusion literature which has accumulated during the past half century, very few experimental data have been presented on body-centered-cubic metallic phases. The impressive combination of experimental and theoretical studies which has given the vacancy mechanism a fairly secure position as the preferred mechanism for most face-centered-cubic metals has no counterpart for body-centered-cubic phases, although the theoretical picture seems to be in a better state than the experimental work. The attempts to select diffusion mechanisms by the theoretical calculation of the activation energy for the various conceivable unit diffusion processes and the energy of formation of the type of lattice defect required have been based on models of two kinds. The first kind utilizes potential functions fitted for certain properties of pure crystalline copper; the second kind is fitted for sodium. The latter is an example of an open metal in which the metallic ion is small compared with interatomic distance,&apos; while the former is characteristic of the larger class of metals in which the ions have diameters about as large as the interatomic distance. brass should resemble copper in this fundamental property. It should be evident that results on the mechanism of diffusion obtained for one of these classes need not necessarily apply to the other. Huntington and Seitz, using a model of the copper type, showed that the activation energies to be expected for interstitial migration or a two-atom direct interchange were much higher than that for vacancy diffusion. Zener pointed out that a four-atom ring rotation would involve an activation energy considerably lower than the two unlikely mechanisms although still higher than the vacancy mechanism in the face-centered-cubic structure. Furthermore, he argued, the four-atom rotation would be relatively easier in a body-centered-cubic lattice and might be competitive with the vacancy mechanism. Paneth showed that a body-centered-cubic crystal-like sodium could form interstitial defects of special type, called a crowdion, by crowding an extra atom into < 111 > directions where the defects would affect a line of about eight atoms. The defect was constrained to move along the defining line. Unlike the face-centered-cubic case, therefore, the theoretical calculations for the body-centered-cubic mechanism do not provide a very clear-cut answer, and the absence of adequate experimental studies is the more serious. This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of obtaining useful information on diffusion in body-centered-cubic phases. brass was chosen for several reasons: 1—the phase field is sufficiently wide at high temperatures to permit the use of diffusion couples with adequate concentration ranges for satisfactory chemical analysis, 2-—thermodynamic activity data are available for the calculation of mobilities from diffusion coefficients, 3—the phase is as close to the theoretical model of the copper -type on which the calculations have been done as any body-centered-cubic metallic phase is likely to be. Measurements of the movements (if found) of inert markers during the diffusion process would indicate that a vacancy or Or mechanism played a major role in diffusion in brass. If no marker movement should be found, a ring mechanism would be indicated but not assured. Experimental Procedure The alloys used in these experiments, listed in Table I with analyses, were supplied by the Naval Research Laboratory. The effects of increasing hydrogen content, introducing a notch, and changing the strain rate on properties of titanium and one of its alloys were investigated over a range of testing temperatures from —196° to 200°C. Both high purity and commercial purity A-55 titanium were used as representative a materials, while a commercial Ti-8 pct Mn alloy was used for an a-P alloy. It was found possible to analyze the data, using the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature concept. Increasing hydrogen, the presence of a notch, and increasing the testing speed raised the transition temperature for the a materials. The presence of hydrogen and notches raised the transition temperature of the a-B alloy also. However, increasing the testing speed generally decreased the transition temperature of the a-p alloy. IN previous papers, the authors have shown that hydrogen is most detrimental to the notch-bend impact toughness of a-titanium&apos; and to the tensile ductility of a-B titanium alloys.&apos; These general effects have been confirmed by Kessler and co-workers," and by Kotfila and Erbin." Kessler showed that the slower strain rate in notch-rupture tests was a more sensitive measure of hydrogen embrittle-ment of a-B alloys than the tensile test. In the present paper the authors cover, with tensile and notch-bend tests, the effect of testing speed, notches, and testing temperature on hydrogen em-brittlement. High purity and commercial purity titanium, examples of u materials, and a commercial a-,f3 Ti-8 pct Mn alloy were investigated. The purpose of the investigation was to correlate the factors producing embrittlement. Materials The high purity titanium for this investigation was obtained by arc-melting crystal bar from Foote Mineral Co. into 1 Ib ingots. As-cast hardnesses for these ingots ranged from 60 to 90 Brinell. The arc-melted ingots were forged to % in. diam rods at 1470°F. These rods were swaged to & in. diam at room temperature prior to machining of the specimens for hydrogenation and testing. The commercial A-55 titanium and the Ti-8 pct Mn alloy were obtained from Rem-Cru Titanium Inc., as % in. diam rod. The A-55 titanium was hot swaged to 1/4 in. diam at 1300°F prior to machining of the specimens for hydrogenation and testing. The a-p C-11OM alloy was hydrogenated prior to hot swaging to 1/4 in. roc1 at 1300°F. Hydrogenation prior to fabrication permitted testing of the a-P alloy in the equilibrated and stabilized condition. The equilibration and stabilization treatment used was an air anneal for 1 hr at 1300°F, followed by furnace cooling to 1100°F and then air cooling. Hydrogenation was done in a Sieverts apparatus described previously.&apos; The hydrogenation treatment consisted of heating for 1/4 to 1/2 hr at 820 °C in purified hydrogen, slow cooling to 680"C, holding 1 hr for homogenization, and rapid cooling to room temperature. Intended hydrogen levels for the a-tita-nium materials were 0.05, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 atomic pct—about 15 to 430 ppm. For the Ti-8 pct Mn alloy, the intended hydrogen levels were 0.05, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 atomic pct—about 15 to 1100 ppm. The material for the 0.5 atomic pct level of hydrogen was vacuum annealed prior to hydrogenation to increase the accuracy of the addition. Vacuum annealing to remove hydrogen consisted of heating for 6 hr at 820°C, and resulted in a hydrogen content of about 10 to 15 ppm. When hydrogen contents were above 0.5 atomic pct—100 ppm—the hydrogen was added without prior vacuum annealing.

Methods of predicting the influence of pattern geometry and mobility ratio on water flooding recovery predictions are discussed. Two methods of calculation are used separately or concurrently. The analytical method yields exact solutions in a convenient form for a unit mobility ratio piston-like displacement. A few typical pressure distributions, sweep efficiencies and oil recoveries are presented for various patterns. For non-unit mobility ratio, one may resort to a numerical method, such as that of Sheldon and Douherty. 1,2 Because the domains of applicability of the analytical and numerical techniques overlap, the exact solutions provide estimates of the errors in the numerical procedures. The advantages of the analytical and numerical methods can be combined. To develop a numerical technique as independent of geometry as possible, the physical space is transformed into a standard rectangle. The entire effect of geometry is rendered through one term, the "scale-factor", derived from mapping relations. The scale factor can be calcu-lated from the exact unit-mobility ratio solution for the particular pattern of interest. By this means recovery performances for arbitrary mobility ratio con be obtained for many patterns. A sample of tesults obtained in this manner is presented. INTRODUCTION Pattern geometry and mobility ratio are two major factors in making a waterflood recovery prediction. Because assisted recovery has become increasingly important to the oil industry, pattern configuration and mobility ratio also assume a greater significance in the assessment of the economic value of recovery projects. The influence of pattern geometry and mobility ratio in shaping a recovery curve and on the other quantities of interest to the reservoir engineer is the main subject of this paper. Much effort has already been spent on estimating quantitatively the influence of either pattern or mobility ratio or both on oil recovery. The literature reports many investigations of this nature. 3-9 However, many results or methods of recovery prediction presented in the literature cannot be considered fully satisfactory. Even for unit mobility ratio and piston-like displacement, where analytical solutions are available, the literature shows discrepancies. For non-unit mobility ratio, the divergence in the results is extreme. For infinite mobility ratio in a repeated five-spot, depending on the investigator, the sweep efficiency ranges from 0 per cent to 60 per cent. With respect to the influence of pattern on recovery, only the repeated five-spot has received much attention. Other confined patterns and pilot configurations have received very little attention. Two calculation methods are presented in this paper, either separately or concurrently: the analytical method of potential theory and the numerical method of finite-difference approximation. The analytical method is more restricted in scope than the finite-difference method, but it has the definite advantage of providing exact solutions within its range of applicability. If a unit-mobility ratio piston-like displacement is assumed, the analytical approach is possible. A few typical results are reported in this paper; the detailed description of the general method and of a great variety of results will be the subject of other articles. Fornon-unity mobility ratio, we must resort to a numerical scheme. The numerical technique is that which was described by Sheldon and Dougherty.l,2 It is not limited to piston-like displacement. However, mainly single interface results will be presented here. Because the respective domains of applicability of the analytical and the numerical method overlap, useful comparisons of exact and numerical solutions can be made for a variety of patterns. The advantages of the analytical and numerical approaches can be combined. The reason for the success of this analytical-numerical approach can be summarized in the following two points: 1. The numerical solution for arbitrary mobility ratio can be programmed most efficiently when the physical space in which the displacement actually takes place is transformed into a standard shape; and 2. This can be done with remarkable simplicity whenever an analytical expression for the pressure

ECONOMIC utilization of all by-products has long been the goal of American industry. One of the first groups that was popularly supposed to have achieved its aim was the meat-packing industry, which reputedly found a use for everything except the squeal of the hog. To the metallurgist, slag has always been the principal wasted by-product, representing a loss not only of material, but of heat. Slag does not possess many qualities that appeal to man&apos;s imagination or suggest a romantic influence on the daily life and progress of a community or nation. It is a bulky product, and space for its disposal within reasonable hauling distance of a smelter is not always available; the iron-ore smelter especially has been wont to find space for slag disposal at a premium. Therefore, the success that has been attained in recent years in finding a use for iron blast-furnace slag is notable. It has become a vital economic factor in the construction industry in areas where it is available. Its use may suggest further possibilities of an economic outlet for the slags from nonferrous smelting as well.

The effect of the specimen diameter, d, on the flow stress, cra of polycrystalline aluminunz (99.997) was studied. The increase in the flow stress could be accountedfor by the increase in the surface layer stress, with decreasing specimen diameter. Both , and a, were found to be proportional to For the smaller-dianzeter specimen (< 0.033 in.) at strains less than aboul 0.1, the work hardening of the surface layer was greater than that associated with the bulk of the specimen. At higher strains the work hardening due to the bulk appears to be independent of the specimen diameter. THE increase in the strength of metals with decreasing diameter is well-known; however, an adequate explanation for the cause of the size effect is still lacking. The earliest systematic investigation of size effect appears to be that of Onol who reported that for aluminum monocrystals the resistance to slip at low strains increased as the specimen diameter decreased. A change in the stress-strain curve beyond 0.001 strain was not found. However, Suzuki et a1 .&apos; reported for monocrystals of a brass and copper having diameters in the range of 2 to 0.12 mm that the entire stress-strain curve was raised as the specimen diameter was decreased. The effect of size was most apparent when the diameter of the specimen was less than 0.5 mm. In the discussion of this paper Honey-combe reported a size effect in copper crystals as large as % in. diam. These results are in agreement with those of paterson3 and Garstone et al.4 While the majority of the investigations on size effects was conducted in terms of the variation in the diameter of the specimen, several investigators studied the influence of the specimen geometry. For example, Wu and smoluchowski 5 reported that in aluminum monocrystals the slip system was a function of the specimen dimension in the slip direction. King-man and Green 6 studied the influence of size on the compressive stress-strain relationship of aluminum monocrystals when the ratio of length to diameter was constant. Their specimen diameters ranged from to & in. For specimens oriented for single slip the critical resolved shear stress for the smaller-size specimens increased with decreasing diameter. No effect was observed in the large-size specimens. Specimens having an orientation near the corners of the stereographic triangle did not exhibit a size effect. Apparently, the increase in strength with decrease in the diameter of the specimen is a general phenomenon and has been observed in a brass |T and cadmium as well as in aluminum and copper.&apos; In a series of investigations (for example Ref. lo), it was shown that during deformation a surface layer was formed which imposes a back stress, a,, on the moving dislocations. It is reasonable to predict that this surface layer stress, as, should be a function of the specimen diameter and could possibly account for the flow stress size effect. In fact, experimental evidence will be presented to show that this is the case; i.e., the increase in flow stress with decreasing size is equal to the increase in the surface layer stress, as, with size. In addition, data will be presented on the variation with size of and a* where is the back stress associated with the generation of dislocation obstacles in the bulk of the specimen and a* is the net effective stress acting on the mobile dislocations. A limited investigation was carried out on gold specimens to determine the influence of an oxide film. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The aluminum specimens were prepared from -in. bar stock (99.997 pct purity). The 0.350- and 0.150-in.-diam specimens were machined directly from the bars while the specimens having a diameter of 0.033, 0.020, and 0.015 in. were prepared by swaging and drawing to 0.04 in. and electropolishing almost to final size. The specimens were prepared with a 2-in. gage length. The specimens were annealed in vacuum (-10-4 Torr) at 350°C for 8 hr. The grain diameter of the specimens in the various specimen diameter groups was 0.08 ± 0.02 mm. Gold specimens of two diameters, 0.14 and 0.03 in., were prepared in a similar way and annealed at 650°C for 8 hr. The grain diameter of the gold specimens was 0.2 mm. After annealing the specimens were electrochemically polished to the final size and tested in an Instron tensile machine at a strain rate, E&apos;, of 10- 3 per min. While it was possible to determine the surface layer stress, a,, in the larger-size specimens by measuring the difference, Aa, between the stress before unloading the specimens and the initial flow stress after removal of the surface layer as outlined in detail in Ref. 10, this method is not applicable for small wires because of the difficulty in obtaining a sufficiently accurate measure of the diameter. The values at the various strains were therefore determined by measuring after the specimen had been annealed at 35°C for 4 hr. It has previously been shown" that the two methods give the same results for a provided that the annealing temperature is low enough to affect only the surface layer and not the dislocation barriers in the bulk of the specimen. For the gold specimens a treatment at 150°C for 16 hr was found to be satisfactory for the determination of by the low-temperature annealing method. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Determination of a,, and a,. The stress-strain curves for the various diameter aluminum specimens, plotted in terms of the logarithms of the true stress, and true strain, are given in Fig. 1. These curves represent the average data taken from at least ten specimens at each size. Over the range of strains investigated the curves follow the empirical equation

JOINT convention week has become a feature of the year with western mining men. The first was held at Denver in 1926, the second at Salt Lake City in 1927, and the third is about to take place at Los Angeles. Holding in the same city in one week the meetings of a number of related organizations has been .found to permit the development of a well-rounded program at the same time that it economizes time and money for the members, many of whom belong to several of the participating organizations. For the third time, the American Mining Congress, represented by its Western Division, of which Philip Wiseman is chairman, is taking the lead and assuming the main responsibility. The A.I.M.E. is furnishing the papers for two sessions and the California Development Association for one. The Southern California Section, Robert R. Boyd, chairman, is host for the Institute, but the Northern California, Nevada and Arizona sections have each contributed papers to the program, and will be represented at the meeting. It will be a real reunion of the mining men of the Southwest.

IF it had not been for the testimony of former Secretary of the Interior, Harold L. Ickes, before the Senatorial investigating committee the public would have heard little about the Federal Government&apos;s suit against California for the ownership of the tidelands. The Ickes-Pauley dispute brought to public attention that the California tideland oil deposits are the last remaining large Federal oil reserves. Ickes contends that these tideland oil deposits belong to the nation for the benefit of all the people of all the states and not solely to the State of California. Ickes also accused California oil man Ed Pauley of offering to give $330; 000 to the Democratic party fund if Ickes would drop the Federal Government&apos;s suit against the State of California for the ownership of said tidelands. The tidelands may be considered as the land bordering the coast line between mean high tide and outward under the ocean for a distance of a marine league, or about three statute miles. This strip of land along the coast of southern California contains large oil deposits which have a present and future prospective value of several billion dollars.

LET us return and follow our first intention of discussing the art of melting. Since I have demonstrated to you how large works are made, you may have thought that the way to the small ones was also open to you, and you would not have been mistaken. But in order to avoid work and expense there are shorter and easier ways to be used, both because the things can be handled more easily and because it is not necessary to have so much regard for the forces of small materials. Therefore, wishing to make a distinction for you, I shall call this the small art of casting. Before speaking of this, I shall tell you of several methods of making powders for moulding. Then I shall also tell you of the methods of moulding in boxes and in frames, and how the said powders are to be prepared for casting either dry or green. Then I shall tell you some methods that are held as secret by the masters for handling the metals in melting and making them flow readily, so that you may easily fill the cavities of your moulds.

Why should I pay $8.50 an hour for dealer repairs when my own mechanics work for $3.50?" The numbers vary, but that&apos;s the argument most contractors use to justify doing their own repairs. They don&apos;t realize it, but they&apos;re probably losing big money. For instance, it takes nearly a quarter of a million dollars in tools alone to equip a shop comparable to an average equipment dealer&apos;s facilities. A contractor must buy a lot of expensive, specialized tools he seldom uses, or else settle for the inefficiency of having repairs done by his mechanics with relatively unsophisticated tools. His building soaks up money in rent, maintenance insurance, taxes. His mechanics demand good wages. It even costs money when mechanics aren&apos;t repairing equipment. Mechanics get full wages for slack periods and cleanup time, too. This doesn&apos;t count as service manhours, but it&apos;s still part of the total repair cost. To help contractors uncover these hidden expenses and find out the true cost of owning a shop, some equipment dealers have devised a do-it-yourself "shop cost analysis form."

An appropriation of $4000 was made to the United Engineering Society for the support of the work of the Engineering Council. It was resolved that the proposed amendments to the Constitution, regarding requirements for membership, be sent to the membership without comment thereon by the Board of Directors. Forty-one members, and three associates were elected. The status of two junior members was changed to member. The resignation of one member was accepted. The dues of nineteen members who are engaged in active duty with the Allied armies were remitted. B. B. Thayer was elected a member of the Board of Trustees of the United Engineering Society for a period of three years, to succeed himself. John H. Janeway was elected a member of the Library Board for a period of four years, to succeed himself. George C. Stone was elected a member of the Library Board in place of E. F. Roeber, deceased. E. Gybbon Spilsbury was elected representative of this Institute on the John Fritz Medal Board of Award, to succeed himself. J. Parke Channing was elected a member of the Engineering Council for a period of three years, to succeed himself.

The Wheeler Condenser & Engineering Co., of Carteret, N. J., is now building a line of horizontal and vertical shaft centrifugal pumps for general services, as well as for condenser work.. This company has been building centrifugal pumps for over 20 years, most of them being used, however, in connection with condensers. The new line of pumps is suited for all services. A small motor-driven unit for tank or stand pipe operation is shown in Fig. 1. Referring to the sectional illustration (Fig. 2), it will be seen that this pump conforms to the most recent advances in centrifugal pump construction, having a two-part divided casing, with the suction and discharge nozzles in the lower half. The impeller is of the closed double-suction type, protected by labyrinth wearing rings. The shaft is protected from the water by bronze sleeves, which screw on to the shaft and extend clear through into the bearing bracket boxes. Bearings are of the ring-oiled type, and in the outboard bracket, is a ring-oiled thrust bearing, which is a refinement not usually found in double-suction

It is the purpose of this note to report the crystal-lographic data for nine new B5A compounds* having the Cu5Ca structure, with A a rare earth and B a transition element, Co, Ni or Cu. In previous papers, some magnetic data1 and preparation and crystallo-graphic data2 for other B5A compounds having the same structure have been reported. Crystallographic data for these compounds are shown in Tables I and 11. These results are in agreement with others of this series reported previously by Wernick and ~eller.&apos; The abnormally large atomic volume of Yb metal3 is not manifested in Ni,Yb, when one compares it with the compounds reported here and the data of reference 2. This is not true for the compound YbAl,, having the cubic Laves structure (MgCuz), to be discussed in other papers.4&apos;5 Thus, it appears that Yb has a valence of 3; i.e., the 2 s and Id electrons are lost to the conduction band.4&apos;5 Lattice constants for four of these compounds prepared by levitation melting have been reported by Nassau, Cherry, and wallace.&apos; The lattice constants

TRACKLESS equipment is being used by the Coplay Cement Manufacturing Co. to develop a folded limestone deposit economically and safely with inexperienced men. Cost and quality of development stone results in a saving when it is used in- stead of outside sources of limestone. This favorable cost has been attained by following a methods development and training program described in this paper. It is expected that further savings in favor of the mined stone will be made when stopes now being prepared are in production. The present equipment will be used for loading from stope draw points. The limestone is blended with quarried cement rock to serve as raw material for Portland cement, first produced in this country by Coplay Cement Manufacturing Co. from a process developed by its president, David 0. Saylor, in 1873. For many years the cement rock alone or with a small amount of added limestone was used for raw materials. Later as specifications were raised and the richer portions of quarries were depleted, limestone from outside sources was required in increasing amounts. In 1925 D. J. Uhle, the general manager, began to prospect company property for limestone.

In the summer of 1898, a demand suddenly arose for commercial quantities of the element osmium. At least half a ton was wanted for the manufacture of a new incandescent light. This led the writer to examine localities where platinum had been reported, in order to determine whether osmiridium mas contained in the crude platinum. With the co-operation of the concern most interested, the Welsbach Light Company, and in company with its President, Col. William E. Barrows, I visited most of the leading American localities where platinum has been obtained. I also wrote to every available placer-mine in the West for samples of the heaviest sands, in order to test them for platinum. The results of this inquiry are given in the present paper. Distribution. The notices of the occurrence of platinum in this country given in scientific journals include two interesting observa tions in the East. One concerns a nugget described by Peter Collier of Washington, D. C.,* and said to have been found on land adjacent to the village of Plattsburgh, N. Y., which weighed 104.4 grammes, and contained sufficient chromite to reduce the specific gravity from 17.35 for the heaviest portion to

In the past two decades, of the successive steps leading from iron ore to finished steel, the production of liquid steel and its preparation for the casting operation has probably undergone the most drastic evolution. The reason for this is the development of oxygen converters (top blown and later on bottom blown) and UHP arc furnaces which are replacing the conventional processes such as the open hearth and basic Bessemer processes. These new processes have been great advances, but it would certainly be quite hazardous to assert that the situation will remain the same for the coming decades. In fact, with the advent of continuous steelmaking a new generation of processes has now arrived. The research and development programme at IRSID on continuous an a steelmaking began ten years ago has progressed systematically in the following stages : First a comparison was made on a small pilot scale of various techniques : for example, refining in a runner by top or bottom blowing, pulverizing the metal stream by oxygen, using the mixing effect of a vortex, etc. but for various reasons these processes proved unsatisfactory and were abandoned in favour of a method using the so -called "emulsion refining".

Sintering is a process in which the pore structure of an agglomerated powder is modified. For many applications, it is desirable to be able to control the pore structure in order to optimize such properties as mechanical strength and reactivity (availability and accessibility of solid surfaces to reactant gases, for example). In general, these properties will be determined by the total porosity and the pore size distribution of the agglomerate. In the work described in this paper, a physically realistic mathematical model for the sintering process has been developed. The model is based on the usual assumption that the pore system in an agglomerate can be treated as a network of interconnecting, cylindrical pores of continuously varying size. It is further assumed that the total pore length is conserved during the course of the sintering process. Using standard expressions for the rate of shrinkage of an individual pore, the model can be used to predict the changes in total porosity and pore size distribution as sintering proceeds. Experimental pore size distributions, obtained by mercury intrusion porosimetry, for the sintering of oxides appear to be in general agreement with the predictions of the model.

Up to now we have spoken optimistically of the many potential savings in capital and operating costs to be obtained from the selection of larger diameter and horsepower grinding mills. Such mills may well be the correct choice for one grinding plant but could be absolutely wrong for another plant. It is emphasized here that many significant factors other than the capital cost, labor, grinding media and power savings are involved in the sizing and selection of the optimum grinding circuit. The following discussion covers some of these factors and their relationship to larger mill design. The first consideration is: What is the grinding circuit supposed to do? In most instances it is one or both of the following: 1. Grind the feed material fine enough to liberate the desired minerals but with a minimum of over- grinding. Examples are preparation of ore for flotation, gravity separation, etc. 2. Grind to some pre-specified particle size or particle surface area. Examples of this are cement manufacture or the preparation of feed material for pelletizing; other examples are preparation for chemical reactions or ceramic manufacture.

This paper reviews the chemistry of selenium and its compounds as it applies to the recovery of selenium from electrolytic copper refinery slimes. Based on this chemistry various processes for the extraction and recovery of selenium from refinery slimes are explained and developed. The optimum selenium technology processes is dependent upon many factors including copper refinery location, environmental and regulatory conditions, local markets for selenium or selenium chemicals, and other plant processes. For this reason there is no one best process but rather a variety of useful processes for winning selenium. Those which have demonstrated consistent utility in both ease of recovery and reliability are discussed in more detail. Recovery of selenium by Doré furnacing of slimes is the topic of a separate paper. The companies that have developed selenium extraction technology are not being cited in this paper for the following reasons: o Their current technology may be different o The actual inventor of a process is difficult to credit since many different organizations have pursued parallel inquiries in developing better processes. Finally, some selenium extraction processes have been omitted; not because they are unworthy of consideration but rather due to limitations of space.

Of the seventeen western states, five-Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Montana, and Nevada-produce about 90 pct of this country&apos;s primary copper. All seventeen of these states occupy 60 pct of the nation&apos;s land area but receive only 25 pct of the country&apos;s total precipitation. Seventy percent of this precipitation returns directly to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration, leaving very little for ground reservoir recharge or immediate domestic, agricultural, or industrial use. With so limited a supply available for all, competition for water rights among users is severe. The result does not always permit using the limited supply to produce the most valuable end product. Most of industry and much of agriculture can shop around for suitable operating locations. Where water is critical to their purposes, they can and do locate in areas where the needed amounts are available. Such is not the ordinary lot of the mining industry, which must locate in the area of the deposit it is planning to mine and concentrate. In the case of copper this happens to be, for the most part, right in the heart of the semi-arid regions of the West.
