Measurements of the electromotive force of the cell at 995°C have shown that the cell may be used to detennine the zinc content of molten Cu-Zn alloys to the nearest 0.05 wt pct. The cell is used for brass melts to which no ZnO is added intentionally, because essentially all oxygen in the Cu-Zn-O system is present in the form of ZnO. The cell is also used to detev,nine the thernodynamic activity of zinc for Cu-Zn al1oys of the brass composition range, from which the equilibrium partial pressure of zinc for such alloy may also be calculated. The electrochemical measurement of the concentration of the most active metal in other engneering- alloy systems by a similar technique is also considered. IN recent years there have been many studies concerning the direct electrochemical measurement of oxygen content in molten engineering metals.' These investigations employ galvanic cells in which the electrolytes are various solid mixed-oxides which conduct current by movement of oxide ion vacancies under the influence of an oxygen potential gradient. Similar cells have also been used to measure the thermodynamic properties of mixing of solid alloys,' one component of which has a much greater affinity for oxygen than the other component(s). One alloy system of obvious engineering importance comprised of two metals of greatly differing affinity for oxygen is copper-zinc. At the casting temperature of molten brasses, the zinc concentration is very difficult to control not only because its vapor pressure is very high, but also because of its high affinity for oxygen to form ZnO. Inasmuch as brass castings may be required to have a zinc concentration within very narrow limits, it would be advantageous for the brass industry to have a means for quickly measuring the zinc content in the molten alloy just prior to pouring. A calculation based on earlier thermodynamic studies of oxygen and zinc in dilute solution in binary Cu-O and CU-Z' alloys indicates that the oxygen concentration of molten 70 wt pct Cu-30 wt pct Zn brass must be much less than 1 ppm for the separate phase ZnO not to exist in the ternary Cu-Zn-O system. Thus it can be assumed that all molten brasses, both in the laboratory and in the foundry, are sufficiently saturated with oxygen for the separate phase ZnO to be present. In view of the foregoing reasons, the cell investigated at 995°C for the purpose of measuring the zinc concentration in molten copper-zinc alloys, particularly those of brass compositions. In this cell the left hand electrode is a reference electrode comprised of a mixture of the pure powders of nickel and nickel oxide, to which a platinum contact is made. The electrode of interest is a molten Cu-Zn alloy of unknown zinc concentration with a tantalum wire contact. The electrolyte is the commercially available (Zircoa) calcia stabilized zirconia. The ZnO in the Cu-Zn electrode compartment is not intentionally added, but is naturally present as a result of the infinitesimal amount of oxygen required for its formation in this alloy system. In cell [A] nickel oxide is reduced at the cathode where O= represents the electrolyte. At the anode dissolved zinc of the Cu-Zn alloy is oxidized to form ZnO(s) in its standard state Thus the overall reaction is for which the molar free energy change is where 5 is the Faraday equivalent (23,063 cal per v equivalent), is the electromotive force of the cell in volts after correction for the Pt-Ta thermocouple, FOf (ZO) and AFF (NO) are the standard molar free energies of formation of the respective oxides, and a2n is the thermodynamic activity of zinc in the molten Cu-Zn alloy. The reference state of zinc in this case is taken to be the pure liquid. At constant temperature all the terms of Eq. [I] are constant except and azn Thus since all other participants in the electrochemical reaction are in their standard states, the change in the electromotive force of Cell [A] is represented only by a change of the thermodynamic activity of zinc at constant temperature. The zinc concentration is related to the activity by sampling the alloy for chemical analysis after cell measurements are taken. EXPERIMENTAL A typical cell construction is shown in Fig. 1. This and other experimental details were similar to that described earlier with the exception of some minor modifications which are detailed below.

Experimental results are presented for the rate of solution of nitrogen in a iron in the temperature range 750° to 873°C and in 6 iron in the temperature range 1410° to 1470°C. It is shown that the rate controlling process is diffusion of nitrogen into the iron. The diffusiting of nitrogen in a and 6 iron is derived from the results, and the temperature dependence of the diffusivity is represented by the equation D = 7.8 x e- 18,900/RT sq cm per sec. The solubility of nitrogen in a and 6 iron, in equilibrium with 1 atm pressure of nitrogen, has been measured. Using these results and other available data, it is found that the variation of the logarithm of nitrogen solubility with the reciprocal of absolute temperature is nonlinear. In an Appendix, some results of Darken and Smith are presented for the rate of solution of nitrogen in iron using ammonia + hyidrogen mixtures. These data also support the view that diffudsion of nitrogen in iron is the rate-controlling process when ammonia + hydrogen mixtures are used. A considerable effort has been made to obtain data on the solubility1-5 and diffusivity of nitrogen in a iron6-l2 because an understanding of the effect of nitrogen on the properties of steel must be based on an accurate knowledge of the properties of nitrogen in pure iron. However, no information is available concerning the kinetics of solution of nitrogen in a and 6 iron. Recently the authors13 have investigated the rate-controlling mechanism operating in the kinetics of solution of nitrogen in y iron. This study was directed to determine the rate-controlling processes for similar reactions with a and 6 iron as well as to establish values for the solubility of nitrogen in equilibrium with nitrogen gas in a and a iron. EXPERIMENTAL The procedure used in experiments to determine the rate of solution in cylindrical iron rods was the same as that described in a previous communication.13 Ferrovac E grade iron used in all experiments contained the following impurities in weight percent: C, 0.005; Mn, 0.001; P, 0.002; S, 0.006; Si, 0.006; Ni, 0.025; Cr, 0.002; V, 0.004; W, 0.02; Mo, 0.01; Cu, 0.001; Co, 0.01; 0, 0.007. After cleaning the surface, the iron rods were treated in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen for 17 hr before the reacting gas was introduced for known experimental times. After quenching, the samples were sectioned radially and analyzed for nitrogen. In addition to experiments using rods, iron foils were used in the measurements of solution rates of nitrogen in a iron. The foils of two different thicknesses were prepared by cold rolling Ferrovac E grade iron cylindrical rod to 0.051 and 0.152 cm. Foil samples were used in a rectangular form 5 cm long and 1.25 cm wide. The specimens were thoroughly cleaned of surface oxide with fine emery cloth and degreased with carbon tetrachloride immediately before entry into the furnace. The experimental procedure was the same as that used in the study with rods. At the completion of an experiment, the foil samples of the nitrogenized iron were analyzed for nitrogen after discarding 0.3 cm from the perimeter of the specimen. Iron foils were nitrogenized and denitrogenized in the a and 6 range with a gas mixture of 95 pct N and 5 pct H for times varying from 5 min to 2 hr. Results obtained for the average composition of nitrogen in iron for these experiments are presented in Fig. 1. Prior to the denitrogenization experiments, the samples were saturated with nitrogen at 1000°C and 0.67 atm N, giving a uniform nitrogen concentration of 0.0204 pct. According to the known a-y phase boundary in the Fe-N system,14 this composition lies within the ferrite region at temperatures 750" to 850°C. Use of this initial nitrogen content insured that reaction occurred between the gas and a single solid phase, a iron. Examples of the results for the mean concentrations of nitrogen in cylindrical iron rods, 0.356 cm radius for both the a and 6 ranges are given in Fig. 2. Typical examples of the results obtained for the radial distributions of nitrogen in rods are presented in Fig. 3. In Comodoro Rivadavia, well 8. 132, drilled in zone No. 2, has discovered between 5205 and 5297 ft., the dcepest pool yct found in this field. The oil production in Bahrein for the year 1939 totaled 7,588,554 bbl., a decline of 709,444 bbl. from the 1939 production of 8,297,998 bbl. The production for the first seven months of 1939 remained fairly constant, the daily average by months during this period ranging between 20,000 and 22,000 bbl. per day. The daily average rose in August to the year's high of 23,800 bbl. per day, then dropped gradually to the year's low of 18,787 bbl. per day for November. The daily average for the year was 20,791 bbl. At the end of 1939 there were 59 wells producing and 8 wells drilling.

THE SALT LAKE CITY MEETING This meeting will be under the auspices of the Milling Committee and the Utah Section. It will be one of the features of the joint convention held the week of August 22 to 26 with the Western Division of the American Mining Congress. A large amount of time has been devoted to the microscopical study of the copper-zinc alloys, emphasis naturally being placed upon the commercially important alloys of the system. Suitable methods are available for microscopically recognizing the two phases richest in copper, Per cent,by weight FIG. 1.-COPPER-ZINC EQUILIBRIUM DIAGRAM. (Frond National Metals Handbook, 1933.) but none appear to have been developed for the positive identification of the other phases. This is, however, accomplished, for the phases normally encountered, by an electrolytic method described in the following pages. Five phases of the copper-zinc diagram (Fig. 1) are considered for the purpose of this paper: the solid solution of zinc in copper, alpha (a); the intermediate phases, beta (ß), gamma (y), and epsilon (e); and the solid solution of copper in zinc, eta (n). The information which is required for' a preliminary feasibility study and the additional information which is required for the final feasibility study on a new mineral deposit are discussed. The preliminary feasibility study is made from very little information and at a minimum cost to the owner. However, the outline for the preliminary report is similar to the one used in the final report. In this manuscript, it is assumed that the results from the preliminary study are favorable and the owner authorizes a final feasibility study by an outside engineering company. The type of organization for completing this final feasibility study is described. The final reports includes all information and data relative to this new mineral deposit. This information is presented so that it may be understood by financial people as well as by technical people.

The paper presents a generalized history of the growth and utilization of electronic data processing in a medium- size, mining-oriented company. A brief narrative outlines a corporate wide data gathering system, its hardware and application. Responsibility areas for corporate accounting, operations control, engineering, and research program development are defined. A Synopsis of programs within responsibility areas is presented along with a review of program language requirements for each of these areas. Anticipated additional uses of computers and the programs being developed for these uses are outlined. The scope and growth of an Information Systems Department within Duval Corporation is briefly discussed. Suggestions are presented which should help minimize the problems and avoid some of the pitfalls of program development for those contemplating the initiation or revision of an electronic data processing system. The importance of lucid and comprehensive program documentation is stressed.

Within the past nine years a means for measuring the distance between mine roof and floor was developed at the White Pine mine which yields relevant information utilized in the mining operation. The technique known as "convergence" is an efficient, low cost way for obtaining large quantities of data for predicting roof falls, caving activity and overall mine stability. Since 1964 the activity of convergence measurements has expanded to become a production tool found in all sections of the mine. The program involves four types of activity: 1) monthly measurements in areas known to be active and in sample blocks scattered throughout the mine for a long-term stability study; 2) semi- monthly measurements along vital travel roads, belt drifts and compressor sites; 3) weekly measurements in areas where men are working; 4) daily measurements in pillar-recovery and caving operations.

AN elaborate series of experiments has been conducted during the past three years at Irvington, N. J., which has resulted in the perfection of a process for the manufacture of smokeless fuel from high-volatile coals, and for the recovery and refinement of the coal-tar products derived therefrom. These experiments have been financed by Messrs. Blair Co., of New York, and were conducted under the direction of Charles H. Smith, a member of this Institute, and the inventor of the process. The low-temperature distillation of coal has interested investigators for many years. Sporadic attempts have been made to solve the mechanical problems, but until the Smith process. was developed, they were not carried to conclusions of economic value. The present coal shortage and the increasing demand for smokeless fuels make this subject one of timely interest.

For the third consecutive year, predicted increases in coal production and consumption failed to materialize. Production of bituminous, sub-bituminous and lignite coal for 1961 was estimated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at 400 million tons, a drop of 15,- 512,000 tons from the 1960 figure. Anthracite production for the year was 17.8 million tons compared to 18.8 million tons produced in 1960. Consumption figures are expected to show a proportionate decline. Of coal's major markets, only electric utilities showed an increase-and even here the increase of approximately 2% was smaller than had been expected. Major cause of relatively low consumption was a decrease of more than 20% in the use of metallurgical coal for making coke. Reductions of lesser importance were registered in general industrial, retail, and export markets.

Procedures are given for calculating stresses in underground tunnel supports which accounts both for the structural behavior of the support and that of the adjacent rock mass. Stresses in the support are caused by service loads and rock reactions. Service loads are due to rock pressures, hydrostatic and hydraulic pressures, selfweight of the support, or other utilitarian-type loads. Rock reactions, equal and opposite those in the support, are due to the deformational interaction that results as service loads deform the tunnel support against the adjacent rock mass. The procedures developed for solving this problem are an application of matrix structural analysis. The principles involved in this method allow for the consideration of the deformable characteristics of most tunnel support systems and an iterative solution procedure is applied to determine the areas of support-rock interaction. Numerical results of example problems are given.

This paper discusses recent technology dealing with the use of computer graphics in the mining industry. It presents a newly developed computer software package specifically designed for use in underground mining operations. This software package, developed under a US Bureau of Mines contract, 1) displays mine ventilation schematics and other representative illustrations for a real time data acquisition system and 2) uses the Bureau-owned Minefire and Ventilation Code for display of ventilation and contamination predictions on the microprocessor system. The package uses a unique system of display indexing that provides a simple yet efficient method of recalling a series of mine schematics detailing an underground operation and an alarm acknowledgment scheme that provides an effective method of identifying problem areas that may exist in the mine network. The package was written in Fortran for a 64-kilobyte, Z80-based microprocessor computer.

Kansas produced 38,150,878 bbl. of oil in 1928 and 40,658,170 bbl. in 1929, thereby retaining its rank as fourth among the oil-producing states of this country. Production for 1928 was less than that for 1927 (Fig. 1) because of a decrease in the number of completions, but the average initial production per well (Table 1) shows an increase due to the completion of wells of comparatively large capacity in the new Valley Center pool of Sedgwick County. This increase in average initial production per well was further augmented during 1929 by completion of additional wells of comparatively large capacity in the Valley Center pool and the new Greenwich pool of Sedgwick County. Production for 1929 exceeded that for 1928 and threatened to exceed all records except that of 1918, however, production was prorated in
