THE problem of increasing blast-furnace efficiency through diminution of flue-dust production while operating with burdens consisting largely of fine ores has of recent years attracted the attention of metallurgists, whether directly or indirectly interested in the economies of iron smelting, and the various methods evolved from theory or practice have been. submitted to wide discussion. After the very thorough and, at that time, exhaustive view of the whole subject, which was afforded to the industry by the meeting of this Institute in February, 1912, the subject was again taken up at the meeting of the Verein deutscher Eisenhüttenleute at Düsseldorf in December, 1912. While American and German conditions are not entirely identical, it may be of interest to give here the words of the gentleman summing up the discussion at the Düsseldorf meeting : ?The chief advantage offered by the use of briquettes lies in the fact that disturbances in the furnace, caused mostly by the presence of fine ores in the burden, are avoided, and that blast pressure can be considerably reduced. The resulting economies cannot be overrated, as, with lower blast consumption per ton of product, the installation will be able to take care of increased production. In consequence of lower pressure and speed of blast, heat is more efficiently utilized,, flue gas temperature is lowered, and coke particles are less liable to be carried along with the flue dust, of which considerably less is produced. Finally, by increased regularity of operation and higher temperature in the lower parts of the furnace, the quality of the product is improved. The question of briquetting iron ores has grown to be one of the most important in the iron industry, and it is not any more a question of what is the cost 'of briquetting a ton of ore, but what, in. using ore briquettes, is the cost, of: production of a ton of iron."

THIS paper discusses what mining reports should contain when presented to the California State Corporation Department, to accompany applications for the sale of stock to the general public, but the principles involved apply to mine financing everywhere. Such reports should 'be as clear and concise as possible, endeavoring to tell the truth in as few words as necessary. Should the engineer be aware that his report is to be used in connection with the sale of stock to the general public, he should consider the public as his client as well as the person who actually employs him. It is always required that the engineer be favorably known and of recognized standing. The following points should be given careful attention : 1. A legal description and location of the property. 2. Transportation conditions, and how they may be expected to affect the operating costs. 3. A brief history of the property, its production record as to tonnage, grade, and character of the ore should be given. Should the property have suspended operations for any reason, this should be given. Any details of former operating costs should be given, especially as to how any improvement could be made, due to better methods which might be employed.' 4. The main geological features and whether they are such as to lead the engineer to believe that the mine may possibly 'be exhausted or the ore of such grade as to be no longer profitable. If he considers them favorable, he should give his reasons for the belief that further development work may produce profitable results. A map showing these features should be submitted, and it is not necessary that such map be highly colored or contain any more than the essential matters. 5. PRESENT-DAY processing in many industries, calcining, sintering, briquetting, beneficiation and nodulizing, increasingly calls for the handling of large volumes of hot bulk materials. Various types of conveyors have been employed. This discussion will cover the factors governing their selection. For temperature ranges up to 400°F, or approximately 200 °C, a wide range of conveyors is available. Special constructions of rubber conveyor belts, steel conveyor belts, vibrating and shaker conveyors, apron conveyors, and drag chain conveyors, all are used successfully. As temperatures go well above 400 2F, however, choice of conveyors is narrowly limited. This paper will consider the problem of handling bulk materials only where the temperatures exceed 400°F. The arbitrary selection of 400 °F as a dividing point undoubtedly can be challenged, as special conveyor belting constructions are available which are suitable for temperatures in excess of 400°F. However, when the relatively short life of such belts and the cost of their replacement, with the attendant down time, are balanced against the reliability and long service life of the properly designed steel constructed units to be discussed, there is little question in any operator's mind that the special belts are more expensive to use. Because the conveyors under study are for the handling of bulk materials, inevitably including a high proportion of fines, obviously wire mesh belts cannot be included for consideration. Even though this type of conveyor is widely used at high temperatures, i.e., for carrying glassware through a lehr, it is unsuited for the conveying of bulk materials, and therefore will be excluded from further discussion in this paper. Preliminary to the study of the conveyor itself is the determination as to whether the material is to be cooled while it is being handled, or whether the processing requires retention of all heat and the maintenance of a given temperature range. In the majority of cases cooling is incidental to or part of the handling process, when the handling, for example, follows completion of sintering, roasting, calcining, refining, or some other process. To meet such operating conditions successfully, the conveying medium used must have: 1—a construction capable of withstanding maximum initial temperatures of the material being handled. 2—a construction providing efficient heat transfer for cooling. 3—a construction providing dependable operation and long life with minimum service requirements, and 4—a construction providing controlled and efficient conveying. Under the usual conditions of cooling during the handling, the construction selected to withstand the initial maximum temperatures does not necessarily involve using alloys, as excellent results can be achieved with normal carbon steels and cast irons, when they are properly applied and proportioned. The earliest and simplest type of conveyor for handling very hot materials is the cast steel drag chain conveyor, still widely used for handling hot cement clinker, as illustrated by Figs. I and 2. Because of the rugged and generous proportions of the chain link design, low carbon steels are entirely suitable for the links. The pins, however, must be alloy steel. The simple, rugged construction of this type of conveyor makes it readily capable of withstanding high initial temperatures, even though the chain is operating buried in the material. The drag-chain type of conveyor has advantages and limitations. Although the efficiency of the heat transfer is relatively poor, the life of the conveyor is reasonably long, and because of its crude simplicity it does not require much servicing. However, as a conveyor, it is limited in capacity, and largely limited to horizontal runs. Furthermore, because of the crude design, heavy weight, and the chain operating at the temperature of the material, greatly reducing permissible operating chain pulls, this type of conveyor is limited to relatively short centers. Another type of conveyor that has been used for very hot materials is the cast pan conveyor. Because of its very generous proportions the cast pan, which is made of either cast iron or malleable iron, can withstand initial maximum temperatures. It also provides efficient heat transfer for cooling. Further, it is on efficient conveyor construction, which can be used for inclines. Because the chain employs rolling friction instead of sliding friction, and is not in the maximum temperature zone, much longer centers are possible. It is this type of conveyor that is frequently used in the casting of various metal pigs, pig iron, and aluminum; it is obvious, therefore, that very high initial temperatures are being handled. With this kind of conveyor the return run is frequently sprayed with water to accelerate heat transfer. The build-up of residual heat in the very heavy cast pans is thus overcome. The outboard roller steel pan conveyor is an improved pan conveyor' which provides high rates of heat transfer and substitutes formed steel pans for the heavy cast pans. It is a very efficient conveying medium. The details of this particular construction are clearly shown in Fig. 3. An early application of this type of conveyor is shown in Fig. 4. In this case the conveyor units are handling roasted phosphate rock at average temperatures of 1000" to 1500°F, and frequent maximum temperatures as high as 1900°F. Several widths are used. The capacity of the unit at a speed of 50 fpm is approximately 30 tph per inch of width at peak loadings, average capacity being about 1/3 of peak loading. The assembled conveyor is shown in Fig. 5, with views of both the top and the underside to show all the construction details. In particular, the following general design principles were carried out in this construction:

This article is a critical review of the influence of surface preparation on crack formation at Vickers indentations in the test used by Palmqvist3-7 to evaluate the toughness of cemented carbides. Experimental results are presented which clearly show that grinding introduces compressive surface stresses into the cobalt phase and thus reduces the crack length. The deformed surface layer is removed by polishing and a stress pattern is approached corresponding to that in the bulk material. Cracks of maximum length are characteristic of this stress state. Deformation stresses can be removed by annealing above 800°C. On the basis of these results , sample preparation for the crack length test can be simplified, the accuracy of measurement is improved, and a simple and significani parameter is found to describe crack resistance of cemented carbides. FOLLOWING suggestions by Ammann and Hinniiber,1'2 Palmqvist3-7 developed a method for testing the toughness of cemented carbides using as a measure the sum of crack lengths at the four corners of a Vickers hardness indentation. This method has several advantages over the bend test commonly used in carbide technology: a) specially formed samples are unnecessary; b) sufficient information can be obtained from one sample; c) the scatter is relatively small; d) the range of actual values for commercial cutting alloys is wide. Thus, this test is both cheaper and more precise than the bend test. Nevertheless, Palmqvist's method is not widely used, mainly for two reasons: a) The relationship between crack length and the technological properties of the material (wear and shock resistance) is not clear. b) The crack length is strongly dependent on surface treatment. It is necessary, therefore, that surface preparation be very precise and reproducible, conditions usually hard to obtain. While any other simple mechanical test has this first drawback, the second became crucial in the application of the crack length method as a practical test. The reasons that this drawback could not be eliminated are, in our opinion, misleading and inconsistent interpretations of the influence of surface preparation on the crack length given in literature. In the following, after a short review of previous experimental results the interpretations given by different authors,4?'-11 cf. Table I, are discussed critically and a consistent explanation is presented on the basis of which improvements of the method of crack length testing are proposed. 1) PREVIOUS EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS In his first attempt to use the cracks at Vickers impressions as a quantitative measure of the toughness of cemented carbides, palmqvist3 calculated the work necessary to initiate cracks by the formula: Sk =k.Pk. [I] where k = numerical constant = 6.49, Sk = critical work to initiate cracks (gf cm), Pk = critical load (load necessary to initiate cracks) HV = Vickers hardness (kp per sq mm). The difficulties involved in experimental determination of the critical load were overcome by the observation that a linear relation holds between the applied load and the sum of the crack lengths at the four corners of the indentation. This linear function, given by Eq. [2] below, was confirmed by Dawihl and Alt-meyer9and by our experiments, see Fig. 1: I = a1.P +a2 [2] where 1 = sum of the crack lengths at a Vickers indentation, P = applied load, al, a2 = parameters dependent on the toughness of the alloy and the surface preparation. The critical load, Pk, is now given by a2, which can be obtained by extrapolating the load vs crack length line to zero crack length, see Fig. 1. This simple relationship, Eq. [2], led Palmqvist1,7 to a parameter which was more reproducible and easier to obtain experimentally than the critical work: the work, S300, put into the sample to produce an average crack length of 300 µm per indentation. This parameter is calculated using the formula: where the load, P3oo, giving a crack length of 300 µm, can be taken from the load-crack length plot, Fig. 1,

The first use of electric punched card accounting machines as an aid in calculating reserves at the Sullivan mine in Kimberly, B.C., was made in January, 1948. At that time their use was limited to totalling individual reserve blocks for the various reserve classes and for calculating total metal content. The immediate objective was to increase speed, improve accuracy, and to effect some savings in labor that could be employed more usefully elsewhere. It was recognized also that the potential for achieving even greater advantages was excellent. The initial experiment proved so successful that it was inevitable that the use of the method would expand. Thus, for the past nine years assay data from core hole and development headings have been processed by these machines and the results integrated with the program of calculating reserves. It was also learned that the machines could store and classify a large amount of other information concerning the mining characteristics of each reserve block in addition to tonnage and metal content. This has proven very useful for the preparation of monthly production reports as well as in long term planning, in forecasting production schedules, and in analysing the results achieved.

Much criticism has been directed at the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 from many sources, but few specific charges have been leveled, at least publicly. Yet, if the criticism is truly valid and can ever hope to become constructive, the issues must be approached head on. Therefore, the authors consider this an initial article and invite responses from others for contributions in subsequent issues. Dialogue is today's popular term and perhaps many of the problems associated with the implementation of the Act are the lack of communication between interested parties. There are two criticisms generally made concerning the philosophical approaches taken in the Act. The first is that there is an over-kill in some of the legislation, some provisions are not justified based on past accident history and economic considerations. Generally speaking in this category, no order of priority was considered consistent with safety and economy. The second category includes those situations where new provisions were imposed to improve safety in one area without adequately considering the consequences in another area, let alone the economics of the situation. While the authors do not always agree with the placement of items in these two categories by some industrial representatives, they will give specific examples that they believe may have a certain degree of validity.

The writer's first experience with flotation was during World War I, in the bene-ficiation of Alabama graphite schist ores. One plant used a cone with a peripheral overflow; dried ore was distributed by a rotating disk onto the surface of the water. No reagents were added' The flake-graphite film floated along with some fine silica. Dewatering screens separated the flake. Naturally unit capacities were low but results were satisfactory. Minerals separation mechanical flotation machines were used in another graphite mill. pine oil was added directly to the head cells, with very good results. All the graphite concentrates from both types of flotation were carefully refined after drying by passing through burr mills, followed by very close sizing on sifters. In March 1927, the writer ran a very successful flotation test on minus 28-mesh, deslimed, Tennessee brown phosphate "sand,"† using a mechanical laboratory machine built in the shops of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., through the courtesy of Ernest Klepetko. The machine was soon converted to a subaeration type, with improved results. This phosphate research program was greatly enlarged and led to the formation of the phosphate Recovery corporation. The development of nonmetallic flotation followed rapidly. The first flotation machine for bene- ficiation of phosphate was installed in January 1928, in a pilot mill, by International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, at Mulberry, Florida. These machines were Minerals Separation, 24-in., sub-,,,tion types, with weir control of pulp between cells. The sand bleeders were very small—about 1¼-in. diameter. As the feed flake. Is to 25 per cent plus 28-mesh material, the cells choked up frequently. This was corrected by cutting a 2 by 6-in. bleeder opening above the impellers, at grid level, which short-circuited the coarse fractions directly into the feed of the next cell. The matter of size classification and grinding was a considerable problem, which does not come within the scope of this article. Because of the troubles noted above, cascade-type roughers were installed in the second flotation plant, built about 1930. Experimental cells had been tried in 1928. General plant layout is shown in Fig. 1 and details of the cascade construction in Fig. 2. The cascade installation in plant NO. 2 gave good results and eliminated troubles due to choke-ups and coarse feed. The capacities and metallurgical results equaled those of the modified 24-in. Minerals Separation flotation machines in plant No. I The objections to the cascade installation are the floor space and mill height required. In 1939 an improved Minerals Separation machine was tested in parallel with the cascades. Extensive tests indicated

A complete rational analysis for design of excavation slopes and loaded rock masses is a desirable but perhaps unattainable goal. Irregular external and internal boundary conditions, poor understanding of failure criteria for large masses of rock, capricious material properties, and the importance of indeterminate forces and inaccessible and virtually un- sampleable rock defects emphasize the importance of experience in this aspect of rock engineering. The experience must be correlated with geological factors. In certain regions the accumulation of such experience through the observation of existing rock slopes in various formations constitutes an important aspect of studies for design of rock excavations.

As part of a program of investigation of the properties of electric arc welds carried out in the laboratories of the A. 0. Smith Corporation, considerable work has been done on the determination of the oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen content of different types of weld metal, employing for this purpose the so-called "vacuum fusion method." It is the purpose of this paper to describe certain improvements that have been introduced in this method of determining the gas content of metals, with particular references to the steel specimens examined in this investigation. The method and apparatus used at the beginning of the investigation were essentially those of the Bureau of Standards as described by Vacher and Jordan.' Later a number of changes were introduced which resulted in more rapid evacuation of the graphite crucibles employed and which enabled larger volumes of gas to be dealt with than could be handled conveniently in the Bureau of Standards equipment. In addition, the analyzing of the gases evolved from a melt in the same apparatus as collected was abandoned in favor of analysis outside the equipment using standard methods of gas analysis. The time required for gas analysis in the apparatus itself, as described by the Bureau of Standards, was found to be considerable, and during this time the rest of the equipment was tied up, preventing its use for the analysis of further steel samples. As a result of the modifications introduced, the time required for the analysis of a steel sample for gas content was reduced from about 8 hours to less than 3 hours. Subsequently, the whole procedure of melting the sample and collecting the gases evolved was modified so as to enable a distinction to be drawn between the easily reducible oxides such as iron oxide and the more stable oxides such as silica and alumina. At the same time evidence was obtained indicating the probable existence in the steels of other nitrides than those of iron alone and making possible their quantitative etermination.

MANY producers of by-product coke have spent considerable time and given considerable thought to the use of a substitute for low-volatile coal as an admixture with high-volatile coking coal for charging high-temperature by-product coke ovens. Generally speaking, there are two principal reasons for this, one being occasioned by the lack, in certain localities, of low-volatile coal delivered at a cost sufficiently low to permit its use, and another being the desirability of finding a substitute product with a delivered cost lower than the cost of the low-volatile coal. It was for the first of these reasons that the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation was particularly interested in this subject. This paper deals with the experimental work and the results obtained by that company in producing and using low-temperature char. OVERCOMING DEFECTS IN COKE FROM COLORADO COALS Colorado coking coals are all of the high-volatile type and were all laid down during he Cretaceous period, which makes them something like 80 million or so years younger, geologically, than eastern coals. They behave, when coked alone, something like the Pittsburgh-seam coals. They make a very brittle, highly cross-fractured, fingery coke of fair shatter value but quite low in resistance to abrasion. Mixed with a low-volatile coking coal such as Pocahontas or certain Oklahoma coals, they make a coke that is equal to virtually any of the eastern cokes. The inferior quality of Colorado coke has long been recognized, and a considerable amount of time, effort and money has been spent upon investigations of means for improving its physical properties. While it has been found that some improvement in quality of coke can be secured by the adjustment and control of such variables as pulverization, moisture content, oven temperature and bulk density of charge, and through the addition of certain inert materials such as pulverized coke breeze, pitch, high-volatile noncoking or semicoking coal, the benefits so gained have been comparatively small. There are no low or medium-volatile coking coals available within a reasonable freight-cost distance. Therefore a substitute for low-volatile coal was developed through low-temperature carbonization-or, more correctly speaking, through the partial devolatilization-of high-volatile coals. The blending of this lower volatile char with the high-volatile coking coal distinctly improves the quality of coke made from Colorado coal. There is nothing especially new about this idea. In 1908 a Japanese patent was taken out by Kotaro Shimomura, whose claim was: The method of making a nonfingery coke out of bituminous coals, without using natural coals of low-volatile matter; according to which a certain coal is heated at a temperature between about 300°C. and about 600°C. so as to leave about 15 to 25 per cent volatile matter in the coal; this coal is mixed with the

Now that a determined public effort is being made on this side of the Atlantic to create a steel ship-building industry, the materials that are demanded for this purpose assume a new interest to the American metallurgist. In the past, the uses of metals in this country have been almost exclusively connected with the land, while in England their application to marine purposes has been equal in importance to that on shore. In the future the same should be the case here. This is the reason for bringing a somewhat nautical or rather naval topic before a body the chief interests of which are supposed to lie in the mines and mountains of the interior of the country. A modern war-ship or " ocean-grayhound" (like the City of Paris) is an epitome of philosophy and human skill. In her graceful lines we have, as Ruskin might quaintly say, a " builded geometry ;" while in her wonderful machinery for motion, offensive and defensive, we have the summation of the ideas of a host of students who have, at one time or another, during the course of a hundred years of her evolution, contributed their intellectual mites to render her a thing of beauty and of power. Notwithstanding her present perfection, the modern ship contains room for further improvement. One of the most important things about her is the propeller. This active member is of more impor-

A BRIEF history of the growth of the anthracite-coal preparation will give a better view-point from which to judge the present problem of separating slate from coal. At the beginning of the commercial value of anthracite, 70 years ago, only the pure portions, or " splits," of the veins were mined and shipped to market, and without any preparation or screening other than the selection, while loading, of the glassy lumps, and the rejection of the fine material and the slate that had strayed accidentally into the coal. The next step was the crushing or breaking of the coal (hence the name Lt breaker" as applied to the preparation-building), and the sizing of it by means of bars or revolving screens. This stage of its development marked the advent of the "breaker-boy " as a slate-¬picker, with his ever-increasing capriciousness. As the richer veins or ? splits " became exhausted and the market demanded a still greater output, the less-pure " splits " and the thinner veins were utilized to produce the coal. While our coal-mining practice, in regard to hauling on main roads, has advanced very rapidly in recent years by means of compressed air, electricity and ropes, that of gathering from rooms or working-places has remained almost stationary. Few large mines are without some method of mechanical haulage on main roads, but the gathering from working-places is still done almost entirely by means of animals or men. An effort to improve this has been made recently by the Consolidation Coal Company, under the direction of the writer, at its mines in the Georges Creek region. The seam worked is the Pittsburg bed, known locally as the " Big Vein." It is from 8 to 12 feet thick. Immediately overlying the coal there is from 5 to 6 feet of " rashings," consisting of thin alternating beds of shale and coal, which disintegrate rapidly on exposure to the air, and making a very treacherous roof. Rooms are driven from 12 to 15 ft. wide, with a single track close to one side. A line of posts is placed just far enough from this side to leave a clear space for the mine-car with a driver at the brake. This brings the post not far from the middle of the cross-bar, and provides more effectual support than if placed at the end. The tracks in these rooms are usually of 4 in. x 4 in. oak scantling, though of late years, owing to the advance in the price of lumber and the reduction in steel rails, more of the latter are being used. This track is laid by the miner. His pay for the work is included in the price per ton for mining. It is therefore, as a rule, unskillfully and often carelessly laid, and cannot be relied upon to carry safely any weight materially greater than the loaded mine-car. The market for Pennsylvania grade showed a drop both in demand and in prices, which reacted unfavorably on New York oil production, all of which comes under that classification. The output for the year in New York amounted to 5,045,200 bbl. The production in 1937 was 5,478,000 bbl., the largest in any year for the last half century or more. Falling prices, of course, affected new drilling. They declined from $2.20 a barrel, which was posted at the start, to $1.68 in the final months of 1938. With this came a reduction in the amount of oil that would be accepted by the refineries operating in the New York fields. Conditions therefore have combined to halt, at least temporarily, the growth of oil production in the state, which had experienced a steady gain for the last 15 years or more, the yield having risen from less than 1,000,000 bbl. to the round total of 5,500,000 bbl. in 1937. Practically all the oil now obtained is from old, developed fields. No new pools have been found in the last quarter of a century or more. The larger share comes from flooding the sands. Although there are many wells that still produce without the aid of the water drive, they are small and for the most part are pumped periodically. Of late, new drilling has been restricted mainly to that required to maintain existing flood projects. Because of the high initial cost and time required to put a flood into production, the depressed condition of the market has been a serious handicap financially, and, further, has been an unfavorable influence on the planning of operations to secure the maximum recovery of the oil. Unless market conditions improve, it is certain that the effects will be shown in the yield for some time to come. Gas Developments Drilling was active in the southwestern area, chiefly in Allegany and Steuben Counties, and some notable wells were brought in that tapped the Oriskany sandstone. Altogether 42 holes were put down in the two counties, of which 31 were listed as producers and 11 were dry. The new wells gave an initial daily flow of 239,000 M cu. ft. At the close of

This article proposes a physical model for an idealized binary mineral system and for the process of liberation by size reduction. Based on this model, equations are derived relating the amount of each component liberated as a function of the ratio of the volumetric abundance of the two mineral components and the ratio of the mineral grain size to particle size. A definite relationship is shown to exist between the mineral concentration within a locked particle and the frequency of occurrence of such a particle. These relationships are used to obtain theoretical expressions for the concentration-recovery diagram. Physical mineral beneficiation processes are based on breaking a mineral aggregate to liberate the dissimilar mineral grains and then making use of their physical properties to separate the mixture into its components. The effectiveness of the process is therefore dependent on how well the minerals are liberated and how efficiently they are separated. Although a substantial amount of work is being done to improve our understanding of mineral separation processes, the study of mineral liberation itself has been almost completely neglected. The purpose of this theoretical study is to shed some light on the liberation phenomenon by: 1) proposing a physical model for an ideal binary mineral system, 2) treating mathematically the fracture of this system into liberated and locked particles, and 3) deriving an expression for the liberation characteristics of this system. The results of this study are useful in understanding the effect and importance of various parameters in liberation, and provide a basis for comparison with real mineral systems. 'RANDOM' MODEL It is recognized that liberation can be caused by detachment which results from fractures occurring at the mineral grain boundaries, or by size reduction which restricts the occurrence of dissimilar mineral locking to a portion of the resulting particles. The detachment effect is dependent on the relative strengths of the mineral grains and the bonds between them, and must be treated empirically for each mineral system. The size reduction effect, however, can be treated analytically if certain assumptions are made concerning the shape and geometrical arrangement of the mineral grains.
