A mineral systems approach was used to interpret precompetitive airborne mineral mapping geoscience data for iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) exploration in the Starra area, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. Selected minerals were chosen to map possible source rocks/fluids as well as intersecting structural/fluid pathways that could have transported mineralising fluids into domains of contrasting rocks/fluids where there was potential for physicochemical gradients to precipitate metals. Ferric and ferrous iron contents and white mica abundance were useful mineral criteria to identify theMount Dore Granite of theWilliams-Naraku Batholith as a potential source of æoxidisedÆ fluids rich in Fe, K and potentially Cu-Au. The Mount Dore Shear Zone (MDSZ) intersects the western margin of this granite with the highest contents and changes in composition of the white mica are peripheral to this contact within the granite. This together, with the fact that the entire N-S length of the MDSZ in the study area (~16 km) is abundant in white mica are evidence of K-rich fluids had preferentially moved along this pathway. To the south, the MDSZ intersects a domain comprising massive ironstone bodies as well as numerous graphitic horizons. This interpreted æreducedÆ domain is well mapped using the æopaqueÆ mineral products, as well as by white mica, which is pervasively developed and extends 2 km either side of the MDSZ fault into the meta-sedimentary sequences. The chemistry of this white mica also changes progressively away from the MDSZ, becoming more Si-rich (longer wavelength) towards the contact with massive ironstone bodies in the west and the graphitic units in the east, both of which represent sites of known Cu-Au mineralisation. Beyond these contact zones of interpreted æoxidised fluidsÆ with reduced rocks/fluids, there is either a rapid change to Si-poor white mica and/or no white mica developed, ie major æchemicalÆ gradient change. These mineral mapping results provide evidence for a direct link between possible source rocks and sites of IOCG metal deposition as well as extending the associated alteration zonation which had previously been mapped/published at the metre-scale to the kilometre-scale. The Tugun Bypass Tunnel in Gold Coast, Australia was constructed using diaphragm walls with the top-down cut-and-cover method to allow simultaneous construction of an airport runway extension above the tunnel, whilst excavation of the tunnel continued underneath. The tunnel was built in an environment of high groundwater table and deep deposits of alluvial and estuarine soils with the toes of the walls founded in soil deposits. There was a potential risk for differential settlements to occur between the diaphragm wall panels, caused by the runway fill placed over the tunnel roof during excavation. Dewatering within the diaphragm walls was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnel. The tunnel was also built in an area where environmental considerations were of great importance. Three-dimensional numerical modelling was undertaken to predict the differential settlements of the tunnel with considerations of varying subsurface profile, staged excavation and dewatering, non- uniform surface loading and complex soil-structure interaction. Field instrumentation and monitoring was implemented to confirm numerical predictions.

Eutrophication of water bodies is one of the most severe environmental problems worldwide. It is well known that the availability of phosphate, as the limiting nutrient, is crucial for increased primary production and eutrophication. Calcite exhibits positive surface charge in most natural waters and can therefore be used for phosphate immobilisation. In this study, sorption experiments were performed in order to test different calcite materials regarding their suitability for use in restoration of eutrophic lakes. These short-term experiments were performed under different hydrochemical conditions (pH, SICC, initial dissolved P concentration) and with varying calcite properties (specific surface area and amount) in order to predict the long-term stability of the Ca-P-bonds. Peculiar shapes of isotherms that could not be explained only by adsorption processes were detected in the individual experiments. Depending on the residual P-concentration in solution, the isotherms can be divided into three sections indicating different processes responsible for the P-fixation on calcite surfaces. Adsorption prevails in equilibrium with lowest residual P-concentrations. The inflection of the isotherm at moderate residual P-concentrations suggests that precipitation and transformation of a Ca-P compound becomes dominant. This is supported by characteristic Ca/P-ratios for different Ca-P-compounds (b-tri- calcium-phosphate, octa-calcium-phosphate). On the new surface, phosphate ions again are fixed by adsorption. The observed transformation of P-bonding is crucial for sustainable phosphate immobilisation on calcite surfaces. While pure adsorption processes are reversible, the development of a thermodynamically stable Ca-P-phase, like hydroxylapatite, will lead to a lasting immobilisation of phosphate.

Over the last 20 years the mining industry has played a key role in the further development of many Central Queensland and New South Wales communities. The number of people who are employed by the coal mining industry, the number of transient residents, shift work and the town facilities have all contributed to how the community views the coal mining industry. As the coal mining boom continues and the mining communities continue to grow more emphasis is needed to address the community concerns, specifically the socio-economic and environmental impacts that the coal mining companies may have on these communities. Central Queensland coal mining operations are situated in the Bowen Basin. Many of the towns in the region have been developed specifically for the coal mining industry with 13 - 50 per cent (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) of people living in the communities being directly employed by the mines. The introduction of shift work, differing rosters and the mining boom have resulted in considerable changes to these communities with more transient contractors and permanent employees taking up residence outside of these communities. This change, however, has not been as noticeable in the Hunter Valley region. The Hunter Valley, situated in the Sydney Basin has two main mining towns, Singleton and Muswellbrook. Of the 37 173 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) people that reside in the communities 13.8 to 16.5 per cent (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) are employed directly by the mines. The Hunter Valley is a large tourist destination due to its many vineyards; this results in a diverse community where mining is not the sole means of employment. Similar to Central Queensland the mining boom has brought more people to the Hunter Valley region, although greater percentages have taken up residence in the communities. The views vary between the two regions on the coal mining industry, specifically on the socio-economic and environmental impacts that the industry may have on the surrounding communities.

Downstream value-adding is a strategic issue for a country like Australia, which has a resources-driven sector of a scale that has significant impact on the national economy. The question of why producers are not doing more to ævalue-addÆ is often asked. In Australia this debate takes place within the context of: an era of unprecedented growth in demand for resources driven by the rapid urbanisation of China, India and others;impending legislation and uncertainty around carbon pricing;rapidly rising energy costs;significant supply-side shortages including infrastructure, skills and manufacturing capacity; andsignificant industry consolidation of primary resource producers with commensurate improvements in market power.There are several examples of resource-based industries which have developed their business along the complete value-chain; for example large oil and gas producers successfully span upstream and downstream operations including refining and petro-chemicals as well as retail distribution of fuel and other products. Relevant frameworks that provide insight and understanding into the strategic issues around value-adding are reviewed and examples of the application of these frameworks to companies and industries which have successfully adopted a strategy of integrating along the value-chain, as well as those players who have focused on parts of the value-chain are presented. The issues around value-adding in Australia are then reviewed with reference to these frameworks and it is concluded that the issue is a conflict between the objective companies who wish to maximise financial value versus the desire of governments to increase economic benefits. An approach to aligning these objectives is proposed.

Several styles of copper (Cu) mineralisation are present at Sepon. Large tonnage, low grade skarn and carbonate replacement massive sulfide mineralisation occur within the metamorphic aureole of Permian-aged rhyodacite porphyry intrusions (RDPs). During exhumation and supergene weathering, this primary mineralisation has been upgraded to form high-grade chalcocite enriched zones up to 50 m thick, which comprises the bulk of Cu resources currently being mined at Sepon. Groundwaters remobilise Cu to form exotic accumulations of malachite that are locally hosted in irregular karsts in carbonate rocks, found up to 1000 m from source mineralisation. Khanong is the largest Cu deposit and recent discoveries have been made at Thengkham South, Thengkham North and Phabing. All deposits have formed by similar processes of mineralisation. However, all differ due to local variations in host rock lithology, structural setting, and hydrological conditions. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Zeolites are potential carriers of slow release fertilisers due to their unique phenomenon for salt occlusion. A comparative study was performed on the capacities of potassium nitrate (KNO3) occlusion in molten KNO3 treated synthetic 4A and 13X zeolite molecular sieves with main channel sizes of 0.41 x 0.41 nm and 0.74 x 0.74 nm respectively. The results show that in a laboratory setting, the treated zeolite 4A contained 13.57 per cent of occluded KNO3 and the treated zeolite 13X did not contain any. This was confirmed by the regular release of K+ and NO3- during washing both treated mixed samples with water and by their IR spectra and TG analysis. There are also changes of the relative intensities of peaks in X-ray diffractograms of both treated zeolite samples. K+ release from molten-KNO3 treated zeolites in deionised water and simulated soil solution shows that release of K+ from KNO3 occluded in zeolite 4A are slow and steady. Proper size fit between the channel size of zeolites pore and the size of K+-NO3- ion pair of KNO3 is the decisive factor for zeolites to occlude KNO3.

As part of a prefeasibility study being undertaken by Newcrest Mining Limited, the Cadia East Implementation Team has developed an access decline to the proposed underground operation. This paper describes new technologies that have been employed in this development, which include: high frequency drifters that have penetration rates one and a half times that of competitors, ensuring minimal increase in drill time, despite rounds greater than 5.5 m;automated drilling used in conjunction with laser navigation and face pattern design software, which facilitates exact positioning of hole collars, lengths and lookouts for accuracy and repeatability; andemulsion charging that reduces manual handling; has variable string loading capabilities, via its hose retraction system, for perimeter control and reduced fume characteristics. A Six Sigma improvement process was used to support the system change undertaken and demonstrated that development rates improved 60 per cent above the comparable single heading benchmark.

One of the main tools used by mining operations to mitigate the risk of rock burst is the installation of a so-called ædynamic resistantÆ support system. Such systems are designed to absorb the impact of shockwaves created by mine-induced seismic events. Dynamic support must be strong and capable of sustaining high loads and, at the same time, they have to be flexible and accommodate large deformation. A dynamic support system is therefore a system capable of absorbing a high quantity of energy. Ground support systems are composed of rock reinforcement (rock bolts or cable bolts) and surface support (mesh or shotcrete). In terms of surface support, fibre-reinforced shotcrete is increasingly seen as the industry preferred solution when difficult ground conditions are experienced, including areas of high seismic hazard. A thick layer of shotcrete is certainly strong but it is by no means flexible. Normal weld-mesh has some flexibility, but it is not very strong. The Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG), in collaboration with Onesteel Reinforcing Pty Ltd, is currently working on a new high-energy absorption mesh that combines strength and flexibility. The new mesh can be installed with a jumbo, in a similar way as the widely used sheet of weld-mesh. This paper describes the development of this new mesh system.

During the later part of 2007 I was lucky enough to visit the Atlas Copco facilities in Sweden, and to see first hand what a large and diverse company Atlas Copco is. The reason this paper calls the Atlas Copco experience a bonanza is that it means a source of great and sudden wealth or luck; a spectacular windfall or a rich mass of ore, as found in mining. I think this aptly describes the scholarship as it has greatly increased my wealth of knowledge of the mining industry. This paper intends to encourage all those eligible to apply for this fantastic scholarship opportunity, and seeks to thank all those involved who made this scholarship the amazing experience that it was. Atlas Copco produces most of its Swedish products in the town of +rebro, and it was here that I spent most of my time, visiting the Underground Rock Excavation group, the Surface Mining Equipment group and Rocktec. I also travelled around Sweden and was able to visit one of OricaÆs manufacturing plants, the Secoroc groupÆs manufacturing plant, the Geotechnical Drilling and Exploration group as well as being fortunate enough to visit the LKAB mine in the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The trip was not all information on Atlas Copco products and services however; I was able to go to the Ice Hotel in JukkasjSrvi and drink Absolut Vodka out of ice glasses, go on a reindeer safari (as well as eat them!), sample the fine meat from a moose, drink local schnapps, attend the Atlas Copco Christmas party, wander around the wonderful city of Stockholm and generally immerse myself in the great Swedish culture.

Porphyry Cu-Mo (Au) deposits of southern and western China are localised in ancient arc environments and continental-collision orogenic belts. Despite the contrasting tectonic setting, the known deposit geology and geochemistry appears identical in both. As such, the application of existing ore deposit models to atypical collisional settings suggests that significant potential exists for future discovery of significant porphyry deposits throughout the accreted cratonic blocks of Asia. In June 2008, a joint airborne collection using hyperpspectral systems was tested on a single Twin Otter aircraft. This experiment was designed to incorporate two airborne hyperspectral sensors for geological and environmental projects. Mineral exploration and environmental impact statements are two areas where full spectrum hyperspectral data can document the mineralogy at the surface prior to mining operations. Many previous hyperspectral remote sensing collections were collected on a single aircraft with a single sensor. Mineral mapping using hyperspectral sensors that measure in complimentary regions of the electromagnetic spectrum is cost effective as it allows for the mapping of clays, sulfates, carbonates, feldspars, quartz, garnets and many other minerals. This report describes the experiment using the following two hyperspectral sensors: ProspecTIR, a visible near and shortwave infrared (VNIR-SWIR) sensor with 356 channels and spectral range of 0.4 to 2.5 ¦m, along with a spatially enhanced broadband array spectrograph system (SEBASS), a midwave and longwave infrared (MWIR-LWIR) sensor with 128 channels from 2.5 to 5.3 ¦m and 128 channels from 7.6 to 13.5 ¦m. SpecTIRÆs ProspecTIR system and The Aerospace CorporationÆs Spatially Enhanced Broadband Array Spectrograph System (SEBASS) are pushbroom sensors, have high signal to noise ratios, have similar swath widths and instantaneous fields of view. Examples of data collection experiment will be shown with a focus on mineral/lithologic identification and mapping along with environmental assessment in the western United States. Investigation of an abandoned quarry near Rowland Flat in South Australia identified asbestiform antigorite as the fibrous serpentine mineral mined during the 1940s to 1978 for filler applications, not amphibole asbestos or chrysotile as reported in earlier investigations. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) of individual fibres were used to confirm the identification. Chrysotile is widely regarded as the only asbestos mineral in the serpentine group. Further work was done therefore, on the geology and mineralogy of the occurrence, and the health implications were reviewed. A zone of antigorite alteration, with associated talc, is traceable for 750 m along strike of recrystallised dolomitic siltstone within Woolshed Flat Shale of Neoproterozoic age. The antigorite formed, in part, by replacement of prismatic crystals of probable tremolitic amphibole. The deposit is proximal to the Williamstown Fault and the serpentine-talc alteration is possibly due to fluids expelled along the fault during late-stage deformation in the Early Palaeozoic Delamerian Orogeny. The antigorite comprises white to pale green bundles of lath-shaped fibres that occur either as randomly- arranged equant patches after amphibole or as cross-fibre veins, both intimately mixed with calcite. Highly fibrous product was mined from the weathered zone where calcite was leached during weathering. Gentle grinding releases fibres with a high aspect ratio (>10:1) that show a wide range of fibre thickness, including a significant proportion of fibres <0.25 ¦m width. Toxicological studies on fibrous antigorite from Poland and Italy indicate that the carcinogenic potential of this form of serpentine is similar to amphibole asbestos. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) techniques readily distinguish antigorite from chrysotile. Determination of asbestiform habit and confirmation of antigorite mineralogy is most reliably done using electron microscopy, preferably with SAED capability.

EnergyAustralia is a state-owned corporation in the state of New South Wales, whose responsibility includes ownership and management of an electricity distribution network. Expansion of the high voltage distribution network in the Sydney central business district (CBD) includes the requirement to run an additional five 132 kV feeders over 1.7 km from south of the CBD to a new 132 kV substation in the northern section of the CBD. A driven tunnel is currently being excavated in Sydney sandstone beneath Darling Harbour to contain the new 132 kV feeders. Tunnel construction methods involve both roadheader and tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation. This paper describes the design development of the cable tunnel, discusses the use of a geotechnical baseline report as an integral part of the contract documentation and provides an update of the current construction works.

In heavy mineral sands ilmenite, rutile and zircon are present in economic concentrations. These minerals are important sources of Fe, Ti and Zr for various industrial uses. The beach sands of northern KwaZulu-Natal, along the Zululand Indian Ocean coastline in South Africa, have been mined for 30 years. The various processes involved in mining and processing these minerals have been controlled by time-consuming and labour-intensive analysis methods which, in some cases, can be replaced by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD)-Rietveld analysis. Heavy minerals are concentrated in the plant to produce a heavy mineral concentrate (HMC). The heavy mineral extraction plant is controlled and informed of the proportions of minerals in the HMC according to their magnetic susceptibility. The different fractions are called magnetic, paramagnetic and non-magnetic fractions and quality control is based on their magnetic fraction weights combined with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis. This current quality control process is very time consuming and labour intensive. We have aimed to show that we can, by XRD, identify and quantify all the minerals in the HMC and also in the magnetic separations. These results are then compared with results obtained by Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) as well as with the results from the physical separation. It was possible to detect all minerals present in the material by XRD and use the Rietveld method for a full bulk mineral quantification. A maximum of 15 minerals can be included in the Rietveld refinement due to computational restraints. Major minerals detected are rutile, ilmenite and zircon and minor minerals are quartz, epidote, anatase, amphibole, monazite, magnetite, titanite and augite. The XRD and MLA results correlate relatively well and detailed results will be presented for HMC and magnetic fraction samples. Small differences were observed for some minerals due to the different ways in which minerals are detected or due to preparation methods within each method. Rutile seems to be more abundant in the XRD analysis and the detection of Anatase is possible by XRD, but not MLA. Leucoxene (consisting of mainly microcrystalline anatase, rutile and titanite is not detectable by XRD since it is not a mineral, but ilmenite alteration phases are observed instead. There is, however, a correlation between anatase, titanite and rutile detected by XRD and leucoxene analysed by MLA.

These have resulted in new legislation which will have an impact on mining economic costs as well safety and health of miners. This paper discusses the changes that new legislation and regulations are making to the industry and current research that is producing technologies to make mining safer and will likely impact the future of mining.

QEMSCAN« technology is a widely accepted automated e-beam technique providing quantitative and statistically robust mineralogical data to the mining industry. It uses X-ray mapping combined with backscattered electron (BSE) brightness to identify minerals in almost any type of geological material (Gottlieb et al, 2000). Besides the modal mineralogy also the liberation, associations, average grain size and other textural information can be obtained. The aim of this study is to test reproducibility of this technique by setting up and running standard tests on different QEMSCAN« systems. Multiple sample blocks were prepared by our standard operating procedure as epoxy-mounted, carbon-coated, polished blocks. The replicates were measured under the same conditions and measurement parameter settings on different QEMSCAN« instruments. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for the set of measurements was calculated. Generally the reproducibility of the systems themselves was found to be excellent, ranging between 0.4 and 1.5 per cent RSD. The more significant change in the reproducibility was found to be caused potentially by the sample preparation and variation in the mineralogy of the replicates. The measurement parameter settings together with these variations can account for almost 15 per cent RSD for minerals of low abundance. For analysed samples good results for the main phases present in quantities higher than 2 - 5 wt per cent of the total mass of the sample were confirmed with RSD generally below six per cent. Following the experiments, the parameters having the biggest influence on the performance of the QEMSCAN« and its precision are discussed in detail. The importance of sample preparation procedures and measurement parameter settings is emphasised. It is shown that experience and excellence is necessary for getting the most from the automatic mineralogical methods like QEMSCAN«.

Magnesium-rich olivine is used as an additive in LKABÆs iron ore pellets in order to improve the high-temperature properties of the finished products. Olivine is only added to the pellets that are manufactured for ironmaking in the blast furnace process. The olivine comes from Minelco/LKABÆs mine at Seqi in Greenland. This dunite complex of Archean age contains about 95 - 98 per cent olivine. The grain size is typically 1 - 3 mm but much larger euhedral olivine crystals are common in the porphyritic type. The serpentinisation is absent or weak. The most common minor minerals are chromite, chlorite, talc, phlogopite, amphibole and pyroxene. The crushed olivine is transported to LKABÆs pelletising plants in Northern Sweden. After grinding, small amounts of olivine are mixed with the magnetite concentrate. The concentrate is rolled into green balls, about 10 - 14 mm in diameter. The moist green balls are transferred into the pelletising machine where the maximum temperature is about 1250¦C. The residence time in the pelletising machine is about one hour. Olivine is used in order to get pellets with better high-temperature properties. This paper deals with the olivine alteration during the pelletising process and the behaviour of magnesium following the decomposition of magnetite. The reactions are quite complex in the pellets because the physico-chemical conditions vary considerably in the process from one process step to another, and in the pellet bed from the top to the bottom. Some olivine particles in the finished product show very slight alteration, some particles are completely decomposed. The formation of the iron-rich coronas around the olivine particles is the most typical alteration. In the finished pellets the magnesium is mainly distributed between the following phases: unaltered olivine, coronas, Mg/Fe-ferrite and silicate slag.

The JK Drop Weight test was developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) in the early 1990s as a means of characterising ore for the purposes of AG/SAG mill and crusher modelling. It has since been used extensively worldwide in the minerals industry as a key ore characterisation test which produces parameters which are used in comminution circuit design and optimisation. The test generates three parameters which are used in the AG/SAG mill model of the JKSimMet software. The resistance of the ore to high energy (impact) breakage is quantified with the A and b parameters. The oreÆs resistance to low energy (abrasion) breakage is measured using the ta parameter. The accuracy and precision of the results of the JK drop weight test are of great importance given that the parameters are key inputs in the design of such capital intensive items as SAG mills. Plant optimisation exercises also rely on the accuracy of the parameters to assist with improving the performance of an existing circuit. A thorough analysis of the accuracy and precision of the parameters generated by the JK drop weight test has now been undertaken by JKTech Pty Ltd (JKTech). An experimental program was designed using statistical methods to plan a hierarchical set of 24 drop weight tests on homogeneous material. Each stage of the test was identified and incorporated into the experimental design so that the contribution to the overall error of each stage could be quantified, including the effect of operator. The data were analysed by nested analysis of variance. An overall analysis of the A, b and ta parameters generated from the test program has now quantified the variance of these parameters more thoroughly than ever before. Using the results for the impact parameters, an analysis has been carried out to investigate the effect of these variances on final SAG mill comminution circuit design. The results will also be used to refine the comparative testing procedures currently in use by licensees worldwide.

The Quesnell-Stikine arcs, in the Canadian Cordillera, are host to Triassic and Early Jurassic alkalic porphyry Cu-Au and calc-alkalic porphyry Cu-(Mo-Au) deposits formed outboard of ancestralNorth America in island-arc tectonic settings (McMillan, 1991). The majority of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au deposits are products of a discrete magmatic event at the end of the Triassic, with a second and smaller event in the Early Jurassic (Mortensen, Ghosh and Ferri, 1995). Of the Triassic complexes, the Galore Creek alkalic intrusive suite is one of the largest and most silica-undersaturated intrusive complexes, and host to the most significant undeveloped alkalic porphyry Cu-Au resource in North America (Lang, Stanley and Thompson, 1995). Because of the common presence of feldspathoidal-bearing rocks in the complex (Enns et al, 1995), Galore Creek likely represents an end member example of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au class. The Galore Creek alkalic Cu-Au-Ag porphyry district, located in NW British Columbia (Canada), contains 12 mineralised prospects (Enns et al, 1995; Micko et al, 2007; Schwab et al, in press) with a total measured and indicated resources of 785.7 Mt at 0.52 per cent Cu, 0.29 g/t Au and 4.87 g/t Ag (NovaGold Resources Inc, February, 2008). The Central Zone is the largest and best delineated. Other economically important mineralised centres include the South-West, Bountiful, West Fork and Junction deposits. The South-West Zone, the focus of this contribution, is a Cu-Au-Ag breccia-centred deposit with a measured and indicated resource of 69 Mt grading 0.42 per cent Cu, 0.69 g/t Au, 2.67 g/t Ag. Hosted in brecciated intrusive rocks, the South-West Zone is distinctly younger than the Central Zone and most of the other mineralised centres (Enns et al, 1995; Schwab et al, in press). The South-West Zone therefore preserves the late stages of hydrothermal evolution at Galore Creek. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download.
