A discussion on simulation tools to aid the development of robotics platforms is presented. The focus of the work is towards mining robotics platforms where operations are typically in unstructured, unpredictable environments and a high degree of dependability in their operations is required. It is argued that a test-based development approach leads to more robust solutions and faster development cycles than traditional single-track field-only development and that the key enabling technology for this development paradigm is the judicious use of simulation tools. The future direction of simulation for use in online applications such as active planning and as a means to assist tele-operation in high latency communication applications is also brief y considered together with the requirements for a useful simulation environment in terms of the simulator architecture. Finally, a case study is presented on the application of the discussed methodologies to an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) for earth-moving tasks, which is being developed in an accelerated time frame with a transient development team.

The application of single liquid cement for fracture grouting in base rock may have history more than 120 years. The disadvantage of it is difficult to increase the grouting efficiency, because the jelling time of it is very long and hard to control. The double liquid grout, such as chemical grouts and cement water glass grout was developed at the end of 1960.'s Although the jelling time of this kind of grout can be controlled, it mast adopt double liquid grouting technology, use complicated equipment and is not easy to control component's ratio of the grout. Another disadvantage for chemical grout is high price, and have pollution to environment. OCE series single liquid grout is the effective grout material developed recently by making large efforts in Ohina. Main feature of it is that the jelling time is easy to control, materials from cement and clay are very cheap and without pollution to environment, and the grout can be injected by single liquid technology. The effect of QCE series grout has been proven by its application in China. It can be believed that QCE grout has great economic efficiency and will give a push to develop grout material.

A belt press filter (BPF) handbook containing practical information for the reference of plant designers and operators has been created as part of Australian Coal Association Research Program project C23040. The handbook combines research and experience with newer generations of equipment and circuitry. BPFs are increasingly finding application in the dewatering of thickener underflow tailings slurries due to changing environmental regulations, difficulty obtaining tailings storage facility approvals and limited water availability. Sources of BPF inefficiency and low availability stem from a lack of understanding of the key operational parameters that affect their performance. This lack of understanding typically leads to increased operational expenditure due to suboptimal reagent dose rates and increased maintenance costs, or decreases in plant availability due to excessively high filter product water contents and equipment failure. It is essential for the continued economically competitive operation of Australian coal handling and preparation plants that complex factors affecting BPF operational performance are clearly defined and understood. Installation and operation handbooks are often provided to sites with new installations, but these manuals are manufacturer- or even model-specific and are often focused on mechanical maintenance. The handbook identifies industry ‘best practice’ and improvements developed by other sites, such as extra spray bars, air system bleed valves, guarding designs, feed and filtrate protection screens and roller tensioning systems. Equations to predict optimum operating conditions – such as free moisture, belt tension and reagent dose rates, with simple feed-specific variable inputs – have been developed from site-specific test work. The correlations developed provide a benchmark for plants to attempt to achieve. This provides operators and process engineers with a tool to explain BPFs and assist them in optimising the performance of BPF dewatering plants of both contemporary and less modern design.CITATION:Mathewson, D and Eschebach, D, 2015. Projects to be undertaken in remote locations require special attention with regard to constructability from the very first stages of design. This is to ensure not only that the project is compatible with the environment in which it' is proposed to be built, but that it does not require facilities or special construction equipment and expertise that is not available in the proposed location. This paper draws on experiences gained on projects in Alaska, Northern Canada, South East Asia, outback Australia, and more recently Bougainville, in Papua New Guinea, where over the past 5 years Minenco has undertaken in excess of A$120 million of work on a number of different projects for Bougainville Copper Limited Although many of these projects have been close to large populous cities, which have been served by regular shipping and airline services, the locations have not had the availability of construction facilities which exist in major cities of Australia and thus can only be considered as remote locations by current day standards. How much have things changed in nearly 2,000 years? What then does it take besides the fundamentals and good organisation to build a successful career in a successful organisation? I'm prepared to venture a list of what I'll'call Tips for Young Professionals. If you've got what it takes, and apply these, I think that you'll gain a great deal of satisfaction from your career, even if you don't reach the distant target each of you should have in mind now. Tyres account for 25-30 per cent of the operating costs of large capacity haul units as used in open-cut mines.Tyre operating costs can be substantially reduced and often contained in real terms by applying knowledge that is now available.This paper describes certain specific advances in tyre management, namely batching, bias adjustment, cumulative plotting and the so-called "pressure-temperature" system of tyre pressure control, originated on the Mt Newman Mining Company's Newman minesite, and discusses the contribution that each has made to improving tyre management and reducing costs.

A paper presenting an overview of legislative and best practice approaches to the management of OHS&E and business risk for Australian tunnelling operations. Best practice can be achieved in Australian tunnelling through ærisk awarenessÆ by decision-makers and line personnel. This will identify problems before they occur and lead to implementing controls appropriate to avoiding loss throughout the life cycle of the underground opening. The author draws on legislative approaches from all Australian states together with practical experience from risk management and risk engineering work from six recent tunnelling projects. This describes a process that:commences with concept risk assessment,involves quantification of major hazards,conducts assessments of operating risks, andleads to implementation of an integrated management system that keeps construction activities connected with the controls identified in the design and planning phases and minimises the losses sustained as a result. Social licence to operate is becoming part of a mining company’s DNA in the same way as health and safety. Consequently, mining companies are receiving increasing pressure from their shareholders to ensure that they add enduring value to the local communities in which they operate. Apart from the shareholders, a company has responsibility to suppliers, customers, employees, the government and the community, which means under the social responsibility model they must be accountable to the other stakeholders. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of mines to operate. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving matters such as the focus on safety, responsible mining and resource management, sustainability issues, profitability and productivity. Considering this, it is expected that the widespread implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related practices across the mining industry in the next ten years will increase, not just for the big players but for juniors as well. Companies, investors, governments and insurers who fail to act on ESG matters are to likely face greater risks. Demonstrating leadership in ESG will ultimately become a differentiating factor and market participants have much to gain from embracing ESG stewardship as part of their competitive advantage. Stock Exchanges have an important role to play in advancing sustainability in the capital markets. It is for this reason that the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was founded to serve as a global platform for exploring how exchanges can enhance performance on ESG issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE initiative provides an effective platform for dialogue between the United Nations, stock exchanges, investors, companies and regulators in the mining industry. The paper will explain why ESG reporting is crucial for the survival of a mining company and how the lack of transparency could be detrimental to its public image and shareholder relations. The paper will also identify bodies that regulate ESG reporting, as well as the available tools that provide guidelines on reporting ESG matters. Key ESG reporting parameters (at a global scale) will also be highlighted.

While international coal trading operations often involve relatively small contract quantities, delivered over short periods or even in single shipments, most coal is supplied under long term arrangements. In entering into these arrangements the customer needs to be assured that coal of suitable and consistent quality can be supplied for their duration in the volume required. A detailed knowledge of the mine and transport system is required and must be presented from the customer's perspective.

Discovery 2000 is basically about data, its collection, management, assessment and dissemination. A major focus of Discovery 2000 is the collection of new geoscientific data. However, the Department is already a major source of data on the geology and mineral resources of New South Wales. These existing data when combined with the new data, will greatly enhance the knowledge of and information on the geology and the mineral development potential of New South Wales. This paper discusses some of the existing datasets and outlines how they can be accessed. It also gives an insight into the Department's strategy for data and information technology management.

The paper explains the genesis of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education to its unique position in mining engineering education. A description follows of the development of the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hazard Management which commenced in 1979 in the cooperative mode of four groups of three weeks full- time study followed by twenty-three weeks in industry. In particular an analysis will be given of the state of origin of students, ages and employing industries. Given the experience from the evolution of this course a similar process is described for the Graduate Diploma in Mining which has been accredited to commence early in 1987.

This paper presents the results from research undertaken in the CSIRO-funded Mineral Futures Collaboration Cluster on developing a future vision for the mining and minerals industry – Vision 2040 – in which the industry proactively contributes to long-term benefit for communities and the nation. Our research finds that Australia is currently experiencing mining-led prosperity due to high commodity prices, yet underlying this are challenges for maintaining market share due to lower productivity from extracting lower grade, more remote and complex ores. Whilst much focus has been on developing new technologies for finding and processing such ores, this paper assesses these activities, together with policy and market innovations in the context of needing to strengthen social, environmental and financial capital for long-term benefit. Vision 2010 sees mining activities linked to systems that are net providers of clean water, energy and ecosystem services, rather than minimising negative impacts alone; sovereign wealth funds are used to harness current prosperity for future innovation. Using a case study in lithium and comparisons to iron/steel, coal and copper – we illustrate the opportunities for new technology, policy and market innovations to link the mining and minerals sector in Australia to more sustainable patterns of production, consumption and prosperity.

Efficient project planning during the detailed feasibility to final engineering stages of a project requires not only the accurate prediction of the grade, tonnes and recovery, but their degree of variability as well. An understanding of the major parameters involved in the grade and tonnage estimates is essential, and the communication to those receiving the results is most important. The personnel involved in the project require more than just a global reserves classification. Quality parameters other than grade should be evaluated as carefully as the estimate itself. This paper does not present any novel ideas to overcome or enhance any of this. Rather, it takes a step back and tries to look at the global picture of requirements for proper project planning.

The role played by lawyers in business has, in the course of the last 15 to 20 years, changed perceptively. This development has coincided with, and indeed has been a reflection of, the changing nature of Australian business, especially as the mining industry established its predominance in the Australian economy. The nature and extent of governmental regulation of business, too, has changed markedly. As a consequence, there has been a qualitative'change in the nature of commercial law practice. For the needs of business to be met, lawyers have had to develop specialist skills in new areas. Furthermore, there has been the emergence of the "in-house" lawyer, who increasingly plays a primary rather than a subordinate role in corporate law practice. There is no evidence to suggest that this trend, which is by now so well established, will prove to be ephemeral. Instead, with all indications pointing towards even greater governmental regulation of business activities, the intimate role of the lawyer in business seems entrenched.

Western Europe is a dynamic region, with an emerging co-operation between the individual nations both politically, economically, technically and scientifically. The European Union, today with 15 member States and with a range of central European States applying for membership, is a catalyst for this Cupertino, using a combination of EU funds, for financing research initiatives, and legislation to enhance development of technology and environmental performance. Europe is a major net importer of metals but with a large potential for own production, in particular in the accession countries. The metals and mining sector is furthermore identified as having a large potential to generate wealth both in todayÆs EU and in the future, widened Union. This paper provides a chart of examples on the many research initiatives presently underway in Europe, addressing environmental issues related to mining. The list of programmes and projects does not claim to be complete; it is rather an illustration on the wideness of the approach, describing various ways for transboundary Cupertino. The approach taken by many of the programmes goes beyond the strict ARD scientific area and therefore only a limited number of the many programmes can be identified as ARD research programmes. Also national programmes, without EU funding, are operating, eg in Sweden, Germany, and UK. The picture is continuously changing with new programmes being commissioned and old ones being completed.

An on-stream iron ore analyser has been developed in collaboration with Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited for determining the iron content of both lump (- 30 + 6 mm particle size) and fines (- 6 mm particle size) on conveyor belts. The analyser, which is called IRONSCAN, is based on pair production, and is now commercially available from Mineral Con- trol Instrumentation Limited (MCI) in Adelaide. It can be mounted under existing conveyor belts with minimal modifications to the conveyor struc- ture, and the presence of steel cables in the belt does not interfere once the analyser has been correctly calibrated. The analyser has been exten- sively tested on both lump and fines on the shiploading conveyor at Damp- ier, and typically the root mean square (r.m.s.) deviation between single IRONSCAN measurements and conventional chemical analyses is better than 0.5% Fe. It is currently being evaluated on - 150 mm ore from the primary crusher at Mount Tom Price, and initial results are encourag- ing. The principal advantage of IRONSCAN is that it provides rapid infor- mation on ore grades. But perhaps its greatest potential is at the primary crusher where conventional sampling and analysis is very expensive to Implement. at the University of Melbourne, and those of us who were his students had learnt of the application of physical chemistry to pyrometallurgical processing, pioneered by Chipman in the USA, Wagner in Germany, and Richardson in the UK. It was possible, by applying this theoretical insight to the equilibria between metal, speiss or Legierung, matte and slag phases, to find a practical and effective way to recover metal values in some residues which had been accumulating for many years at the NA, but which had defied all attempts to treat them to that date. There was also an opportunity to study the batch lead refining methods still in use at all lead refineries apart from Port Pirie, and to devise optimis- ing techniques which greatly improved the operations and effected considerable savings. Next the writer spent some six years alternating between the BHAS, Port Pirie, and Imperial Smelting at Avonmouth in the UK, concerned with lead or lead-zinc smelting, and the develop- ment of several further continuous lead refining processes, before returning to Australia as Section Leader, Process Development in the CSIRO Division of Chemical Engineering, Fisherman's Bend, Victoria. Metallurgical opportunities which arose during this last period included the problem of tin smelting which had developed over about a decade: the world's tin smelters had been accustomed to treating fairly high grade tin concentrates, con- sisting of almost pure cassiterite, with very little impurity-mostly quartz, limestone, iron oxides, and sundry other silicates. Most such concentrates had been produced from alluvial deposits, where nature had already done some of difficult part of the mineral processor's work-at who knows what recovery-so that he could now produce high grade concentrates at high recovery. The smelters were not really set up for the treatment of lower grade concentrates, such as could be made with reasonably high recoveries from rock mining. Thus they imposed such penalties on impurities and lower than desired tin grades, that whenever a mineral processor improved tin recovery at the expense of lower- ing grade, such an improvement entailed a lower financial return to the miner. There was clearly a need for improved understand- ing of tin smelting, (at that time shrouded in secrecy) and develop- ment of techniques better suited to the treatment of lower grade concentrates. As well as the practical development, a start was made with the computer modelling of the smelting process, with the obiect of optimising the process parameters.

The title of my address today 'An Environment for Mineral Development' is a play on words, but I wish to use the meaning of the word environment in the broadest possible context to comment on those factors that control mineral development in New Zealand today. Of prime importance, let us consider the current economic environment in which New Zealanders live and work, as individuals and communities, and as a trading nation. It is the expanding growth requirements of the emerging nations and the interactive economic forces of our international trading partners and competitors, that dictates New Zealand's economic environment and thus the priority to develop its natural resources. As an itinerant New Zealander who has kept a watching brief over the economic environment in New Zealand over the last 30 years, I say, without prejudice, that I am concerned to have seen New Zealand's external and internal trading position deteriorate so rapidly in the last decade. I am concerned that a significant proportion of the population has been extremely slow to realize that with the creation of the European Economic Community, in the late 1950s, and following the first OPEC oil crisis in 1973, New Zealand in a corporate sense came close to technical bankruptcy.

It is proposed to deal with those raw materials which are produced in South Australia to meet the needs of the country's steel industry. They are chiefly, iron ore, limestone and quartz.Iron ore and limestone are fed to the blast furnaces of Newcastle and Port Kembla together with coke to produce the hot metal charge for the open hearth steel furnaces.They are also qsed in the raw state in the steel furnaces to assist in the conversion of the hot metal to steel. The iron ore is quarried from' Iron Knob and shipped from Whyalla to Newcastle and Port Kembla, whilst the limestone is supplied from the deposits at Rapid Bay and shipped in the same manner.Quartz is used in the manufacture of ferro-silicon, an alloy which is added to the ladles of molten metal tapped from the open hearth furnace in the case of almost every grade of steel. It is obtained from a quarry situated between Iron Knob and Whyalla, and shipped to Newcastle.IRON OREWith the exception of several small quarries situated at Breadalbane, Cadia, Cowra, Crookwell, Michelago, Jerrawa and lerraama in New South Wales, the iron ore requirements of Australia's steel industry to date have been met from Iron Knob and the Middleback Range in South Australia.Several of the small deposits in New South Wales were worked during the war years of 1941-44 during the shipping emergency and produced 1,355,417 tons, compared with an output of approximately 43,000,000 tons from Iron Knob between 1901 and 1949.
