Geometallurgical characterisation of ore deposits is accepted practice in some parts of the mining industry today. Its primary aim is to provide constrained inputs that reflect inherent geological variability and its impact on metallurgical performance for the deposit. Geometallurgy improves project value because it suggests more valuable alternatives for scheduling and processing through an increased knowledge and understanding of the interactions of rock properties and extractive technologies. Lower project cost (both capital and processing) and improved recoveries are the result from closer tailoring of the mining and mineral processing strategies to the characteristics of the resource (Dunham, Vann and Coward, 2011). Tailings storage facilities (TSFs) can be seen as potential resources and it is argued that fundamental geometallurgical characterisation as applied in ore deposit characterisation should also be applied to planning the retreatment of TSFs. This paper will describe a research project at Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Resource Centre assessing if geometallurgical principles and methodologies can successfully be applied to TSFs as they have been to primary deposits. The project is establishing a new standard method of tailings evaluation which will include a 3D spatial model of the tailings resource. Initial domaining of the TSFs was done using principal component analysis followed by k-means cluster analysis based on chemical assays from drill core samples. The subsequent characterisation of the drill core samples has involved chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical profiling, with a range of metallurgical tests being conducted on the samples. This characterisation step is followed by class-based analysis, predictive modelling and process performance domaining with the ultimate objective of establishing a 3D spatial model incorporating geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical performance data. This approach, which takes into account processing performance permits a more realistic (as compared to doing limited chemical assays and metallurgical testing) economic evaluation of the potential of reprocessing the tailings material. It is believed that the approach is generic and can be applied to other TSFs being considered for reprocessing. This paper presents the findings and analysis of the investigation of effectiveness of thin spray-on liners (TSLs) as a gas management tool in underground coalmines. The project involves spraying TSL on the area surrounding gas drainage holes whereby the TSL acts as a thin membrane decreasing the permeability of the coal. This restricts air migrating through the coal seam and diluting gas from the drainage holes. There are a number of potential benefits from this technique but key points are that gas drainage holes produce gas with higher concentrations of methane. The design and execution of a field trial to investigate the effectiveness of a TSL on purity of in situ methane from gas drainage holes is presented in this report. For eight drainage holes, the results show an average increase in methane purity by 9.14 per cent and a reduction in air contamination by an average 7.93 per cent. Overall methane flow rate decreased by 27.6 L/s; however, flow rates were unreliable due to poor measuring equipment. For most holes, methane purity was not changed significantly; however, certain boreholes were responsible for most of the variation in methane purity. The boreholes showing a dramatic improvement in methane purity were likely those with intersecting cleats covered by the TSL. If the TSL was sprayed over more area, specifically in areas where the cleats are intersecting with holes, it is likely that purity of methane in the drainage holes will increase.CITATION:Tenney, J M, Chalmers, D and Li, Z, 2015. Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. This paper reviews hydrometallurgical processing technology for refractory gold ores, which form an increasing resource stock for gold. The reasons fQr ore refractoriness and pressure, chemical and biooxidation process options are briefly listed. Electrochemical technology, suitable for processing refractory ore is reviewed and some preliminary results for the electrochemical oxidation of slurried arsenopyrite are given.

The Dittmer process for the debismuthising of lead by electrolysis beneath molten caustic soda has been scaled up to 100 kg lots for batchwise operation and to 20 kg per hour for a continuous flow of lead. Bismuth was decreas- ed from 0.03 to less than 0.005 wt. per cent for an electricity consumption of 220 kWh per ton of lead. Lower bismuth levels may be readily achieved if required.

The current emphasis within the mining industry to reduce the cost of production has stimulated interest in the field of maintenance and operational reliability of capital intensive mining equipuent. The failure consequences of these machines have major safety and economic implications for a mine operator. The reliability centered maintenance (RCM) approach has been found cost effective for equipment maintenance and for achieving high level system perform- ance by many organizations such as airline, military, chemical, process and manufac- turing industries. In this paper an attempt has been made to describe in brief the basic concepts of a RCM approach, the methods of RCM analysis and its cost effectiveness for maintenance of equipment. Since this approach is comparatively new for the mining industry, suitable examples are given to illustrate the case.

The selection of the ore haulage system is one of the most crucial decisions made in the development of an underground mining project. The haulage system is, once selected, one of the components of a mine that defines its ability to respond to changes in mining inventory and the market conditions for its products. Over the last decade, in Australia at least, this selection process has largely centred on the debate over the merits of shaft and decline truck haulage. Little attention, if any, was given to the application of inclined conveyor haulage as a real alternative to the shaft and truck haulage. This is despite well established precedents for its application in the underground coal industry and some limited applications in underground metalliferous mines. This paper seeks to explore the case for the application of inclined conveyors as a legitimate ore haulage system for underground mines. The case for conveyor haulage is illustrated by an overview of the application of conveyors at some existing operations, and discussion of what conveyors have to offer as a mine haulage system and the issues that are associated with them. Material drawn from the feasibility studies for NewcrestÆs Ridgeway mine and Telfer Deeps Project is presented as case studies that considered selection of inclined conveyor haulage. The purpose of these case studies is to highlight the value of impartially approaching tasks of this type with a robust plan. This plan should be able to respond to issues identified as the task progresses towards the objective of finding the right solution for an ore haulage system.

BATMINÖ, BATMINEÖ, BATMINDÖ are an abbreviation for Business Analysis Tools for Mining, Mine Evaluation and Mine Design respectively. BATMINP are proprietary tools customised to suit individual client requirements. The first suite of tools provides for analysis and evaluation of open pit mining equipment alternatives and includes fleet selection, fleet sizing and production, productivity and economic outcomes. The models address all mine process activities including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and auxiliary services. All models are built to provide for simultaneous evaluation of multiple alternatives that are time and condition related. Provision is made for modelling from first principles and/or default or shortcut inputs. Sensitivities to key input parameters are easily performed and consistent logic is applied throughout the process. The models are built to provide key outputs in a format suitable for presentation and documentation. Provision is also made in the models for validation of both inputs and outputs through benchmarking, back analysis and budget comparison. The same models can be used for short interval (12 month) planning and control, medium-term (three to five years) and long-term life-of-mine (LOM) planning. Millions of dollars are spent each year on mining plant and equipment. Decisions that impact on the medium and long-term are made. BATMINP tools have been used to perform studies with good results and in most cases the studies have been validated through back analysis and comparing model outcomes to real data.

During the past three years there have been several parties prospecting for oil in the Stat6 of Queensland, and It was: gratifying to read the newspaper headlines last Christmasabout the discovery of oil in the Moohie Nol Well. This discovery was not only a welcome Christmas present for Australia but marked up another success for the seismicmethod in exploration for oil.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the operationaI aspects of seismic work in Queensland with-emphasis on shot-haledrilling. The paper is based upon the experience of one particular seismic survey which began in December of - 1959 and is still inoperation. This survey is being conducted by the Petty Geophysical Engineering - Company of San Antonios, Texas, and the Queensland area involved is in the general vicinity of Quilpie, Dlackall and Charleville.

The results of calibration trials conducted on parachute stoppings under a recently completed NERD&DC grant are presented. Applications of parachute stoppings, for rapid regulation and control of ventilation networks are described including use in mine recoveries, sealing sections and rescue work. Parachute stoppings are one of a series of non-rigid ventilation control structures specifically designed for quick installation in emergency situations, for use in high production/rapid advance areas and areas suffering roof-floor convergence.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (Cliffs) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three separate hubs and trucked to Koolyanobbing. There it is crushed and screened to lump and fines finished products and railed to Esperance port for export to Asian customers. Cliffs is renowned in the marketplace for its consistent product quality. In 2010, 9 Mt of ore was exported to Asia.Over the last three years, Cliffs has systematically refurbished its product quality system (PQS), to improve efficiency of production while maintaining its high standard of product quality. Particular attention has been given to reducing inventory, which has required significant modifications to the production process design.In redesigning the production process, emphasis was placed on maximising the application of the inherent blending in each of the production process steps and dedicated blending was only introduced where essential. Simulation modelling and statistical analysis of process capabilities were utilised to develop a system that optimises inventory, minimises rehandle, eliminates several decision-making steps and maintains a pull focus throughout the value chain.The new planning functions are now fully integrated and effectively control long-term grade variability rather than relying on long-term stockpiling. The production process design and the daily crusher blend plan are used to control short-term grade variability. With the upgrading of the planning processes the accuracy and consistency of algorithms for lump per cent and lump and fi nes grades became more important and an increased geometallurgical function has been added to the company.The continuous stockpile management system was upgraded to increase the effectiveness of the daily crusher blend planning process and is now the sole intervention point in the production process for grade-based decisions. Grade control systems were modified to utilise advances in software and geostatistics to deliver accurate short range planning models. The reconciliation and sampling systems have also been refurbished with an emphasis on practical application and feedback loops.Accountability and transparency are provided by management reports that are generated from a centralised data warehouse and the introduction of a corrective action system. Standardised reports are available to all stakeholders and a quarterly KPI scorecard assists the management review process.The successful rejuvenation of the PQS has culminated in operational efficiency through the implementation of an integrated end-to-end process flow. Shareholder value is maximised through maximising recovery of the resource and minimising costs. Customer focus is maintained by reliably delivering product with acceptable and low grade variability.

The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County involves TBM tunnelling twin light rail tunnels through cohesive soils and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow city street. Along the tunnel alignment are a listed historic building on shallow foundations as well as modern buildings on deep foundations; one major office block was actually constructed directly over the alignment during the latter phases of design process. This paper provides an overview of the general site conditions, tunnel design and the technical basis for excavation support and tunnelling decisions. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans are also discussed. Project construction has now commenced and a brief summary of progress to date is included in this paper; this will be updated for the presentation to be made in Melbourne.

As mobile equipment electrification in underground mining continues to gain popularity, control ofheat and humidity in the workplace is becoming a key driver in sizing of ventilation and mine aircooling systems. For design and sizing of ventilation and cooling systems to be accurate, and for themine mobile equipment fleet to be sized appropriately to meet production goals, vehicle productivitymetrics, heat modelling, and energy balances for electrified fleets need to consider operation througha realistic duty cycle that is reflective of various tasks performed during a shift.The authors conducted a real-world comparison of two 8 cubic yard (14 metric tonne) class Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) machines – one diesel and one battery-electric vehicle (BEV) – performingidentical muck-haul-dump operations on consecutive days at an underground nickel/copper hardrock mine in Ontario, Canada.The battery-electric LHD averaged 8.9 per cent faster cycle time than the diesel vehicle (gross,without accounting for charging time), and was able to transport 25 per cent more material per cycledue to a larger bucket capacity. When including the charging time, average net cycle times wereequivalent for the two vehicles over the 200 cycles. The BEV carried more payload over the eighthour period due to the increased capacity per cycle.The testing identified an approximately five-fold reduction in heat output from the BEV in comparisonto the diesel LHD on a basis of heat output per tonne of rated bucket capacity. Heat output from thefast charger was found to be approximately 4 per cent of the charging rate, with negligibletemperature change observed in the main drift. External noise levels in the mine were found to be14 dB lower for the BEV during transit and 11 dB lower during bucket loading. Fuel/energy costs forBEV electricity input were approximately four times lower per operating hour than diesel fuel costbased on typical 2021 electrical and diesel unit rates for a grid-connected mine in Ontario, Canada.

Both safety and productivity in underground gassy coal mines can be improved substantially if an appropriate gas management system is introduced. A strong direct relationship exists between the gas emission rate, roof and floor strata relaxation zones characteristic, mining activities and gas drainage practices. Detailed knowledge of geological factors, gas and coal-rock properties, as well as mining systems are necessary for the methodology used in predicting overall underground gassiness, and planning gas capture and ventilation systems. Early gas emission calculations for various mining activities, particularly for the longwall mining system are essential. A reasonably accurate prediction of gas make as well as the design of ventilation, gas recovery (drainage holes) techniques can be made using 'Floorgas' and 'Roofgas' computer simulations, provided sufficient geological, mining, and gas data are made available.

If the record of maj or proj ects in Australia is taken into account, it is apparent, the proper planning of an industrial relations strategy for many such projects has been ill considered by project developers. The recognition of the need to develop a plan from the initial feasibility study has been forced on those promoting new projects by the publicity given to the Australian industrial relations record. The delays in delivery caused by factors supposedly out of the project's control are often given for non-performance of contract and used as an excuse for limiting further development. Many of the problems experienced in project development can be overcome with sound industrial relations planning. The promises given in the euphoria of the early stages of a project relating to price and delivery often become a burden for the future because the complexities of the Australian Industrial Relations Systems are not understood or considered. The recognition by senior executives of their responsibilities in this area will contribute greatly to a new era of project development.

After a short theoretical comparison of various typical large bell tops with the bell-less top for segregation and other ,ffects on the material flowing through the equipment proper, a comparative analysis between classical and the new burdening in the furnace is given, showing the theoretical effects of distribution and segregation on the horizontal pressure variations, temperature values and gas composition in the stack. Then some typical theoretical charging patterns of the bell-less top for wall and centre temperature adjusting, pressure drop corrections, dissymmetric local action for blow-in and scaffolding are described. Finally the available practical results on furnaces equipped with the bell-less top are compared with the theoretical statements made before and conclusions indicate that the new approach to burdening blast furnaces is a real improvement.

An enormous capital outlay is required to bring a new deep level (¦ 4 000 m deep) Witwatersrand gold mine into production. In addition, future mining methods must cater for rapidly rising working costs of which labour costs make up the largest portion. South African mining engineers are therefore being forced to challenge accepted design and valuation principles when planning these high risk ventures. New mining methods must be sought to satisfy the ever increasing need for productivity improvement. The technological problems posed by such changes cover a wide range of disciplines. Aspects of shaft design and configuration, besides being examined in the light of productivity, must also consider the rock mechanics implications at depth. Mining methods must anticipate and prepare for extremely hostile conditions due to seis- micity and virgin rock temperatures.

This opportunity to present a few thoughts on the question of professional education and training comes at a most appropriate time. In Britain, a great deal of energy is being expended in this, so-called, post-Finniston era, to create a new look for the status of engineers and engineering by the Engineering Council. Naturally, the tune and the tempo are being called by the big institutions which essentially serve the manufacturing industries. However, the Engineering Council in Great Britain also includes the mining and processing institutions such as the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (IMM) and so there is a chance - if it is taken - for us to contribute to the debate and the determinations that emanate from it. The IMM, of course, caters for the professional status of those engaged in the mining and minerals industries and includes many who do not see themselves as engineers. Nevertheless, the debate is important to these other groups whose livelihood is inextricably bound up with those who are engineers and there are many facets of the engineering policies being shaped that will, I am sure, eventually be enshrined in the requirements for professional status across all the various disciplines in our industry.

About 17% of the world's present day oil supplies comes from wells drilled in the continental shelf of some 28 countries. The demand for oil is increasing each year and is expected to quintuple in the next decade. In the same period, the demand for gas will climb to at least 20 times its present rate. In the next decade, the percentage of oil and gas obtained from offshore is expected to rise to nearly half the world's consumption. The offshore oil industry is currently striving to achieve new technological advances in the field of deep ocean operations, especially in face of adverse seas. While the emphasis was put on drilling vessels for exploration, the industry was slow in developing effective offshore construction vessels. Until a year ago, construction vessels were but large barges with construction equipment mounted on their decks. These vessels all shared the same severe limitation: When the sea exceeds a five-foot wave height (and in some cases as little as three feet) the conventional construction barge is forced to suspend operations. In face of an oncoming storm they must run for shelter. Their utilization, therefore, is limited and in rough weather areas, such as the North Sea or the Bass Strait is lower than 50%.

Water is a defining feature of the Pilbara. Its management was and remains vital for the pastoral industry which European settlers established when they first came to the Pilbara, and for the mining industry which now dominates economic activity in the Pilbara. Water availability in the Pilbara is, however, problematic. Severe droughts and major floods can occur at close intervals. In response to this uncertainty, the Department of Water undertook a Prefeasibility Study to determine, at a high level, the water requirements and opportunities in the Pilbara region. This paper reports on the outcomes of this study and the water integration opportunities in the region, identifying the sources of water supply and offers possible options for managing this water sustainably for the present and future demand. A range of supply opportunities is reviewed including: dewatering from mining operations, surface water, and desalination. All opportunities were subject to order of magnitude costing, including capital, whole of life and retail unit pricing with preferred options receiving further interrogation through triple bottom line (TBL) analysis to prioritise solutions. Options were also subject to intangible quantification (IQ) including benefits from the reduction of carbon emissions to ensure that the preferred option is based on factors other than just the least cost. Demand analysis was undertaken to identify current and future requirements and were assessed through review and integration of regional and sub regional master plans and consultation with mining, agriculture, industry and the community. The paper concludes that the viability of a Pilbara integrated water supply scheme depends on the development of a financial mechanism involving both government and industry participation models. The agreed scheme formed the basis of a submission to Infrastructure Australia for funding assistance.
